8:05 — LAFD says a hose left running to fill a swimming pool sent roughly 7,000 gallons into the slope above the 1900 block of North Wilcox Avenue, pressurizing a retaining wall until it failed Friday afternoon. Cinder's blocks hit a vacant building below; eight apartment units on Grace Avenue were evacuated and later cleared, and crews siphoned the water out in about 90 minutes. Also: Sushiya, the sushi room at 8650 Sunset in Sunset Plaza, closes September 29 after 28 years.

9:05 — A new study in Scientific Data puts Greenland and Antarctica's ice loss at 12.5 trillion tons since the 1970s, and the surprise is where it's going: roughly five-sixths of that loss comes from warm ocean water eating the glaciers from underneath, not sunshine melting the top. Meanwhile, the ocean took its own bite out of Nicolas Cage's Malibu house — a 30-by-30-foot sinkhole swallowed the driveway and got five oceanfront homes red-tagged.

Hour 1 (9.16) It was a brutal night in the San Fernando Valley: A fatal bus crash in Chatsworth killed two passengers after a speeding SUV T-boned a bus that had the right of way, and then NBC’s News Chopper 4 went down while covering the scene, killing journalist Eliana Moreno and pilot George Marciniw. Tim plays Mark Brown’s ABC report as details pile up — the SUV driver has a long rap sheet, is booked on suspicion of murder, and is being held on more than $4 million bail. 

Burbank native Ross Benson of myburbank.com, who knew Marciniw for some 50 years, calls in to talk about his friend. NBC has spent the last 24 hours covering its own people; early on, some in the business thought it was a Channel 7 bird, and Tim worried it was his friend Chris Christi. The loss hits even harder because Moreno was so young, and engaged to be married. 

6:05 — It was a truly horrible night last night in the San Fernando Valley. A fatal bus crash in Chatsworth, in which two people were killed, and the NBC's News Chopper 4 that was covering the crash going down, resulting in two media veterans, journalist Eliana Moreno and pilot George Marciniw, dying in the tragedy. 

6:20 — To more on last night's tragedy in Chatsworth. Tim plays the news report from Mark Brown of ABC (who Tim happens to share a one-sided friendship with). All of this kicked off when a woman speeding in an SUV T-boned the bus, which had the right of way, resulting in the death of two passengers. News Chopper 4 was covering the crash when it went down. That woman had quite the long rap sheet and is now booked on suspicion of murder. She's being held on $4 million-plus bail.

6:50 — It's been tough for NBC over the past 24 hours, who have been reporting on the death of their colleagues since News Chopper 4 went down last night around 7 p.m. Initially, many people in news thought it was a Channel 7 helicopter that went down, and Tim was concerned for his friend Chris Christi. What makes this especially sad is that Eliana Moreno was so young and engaged to be married.

The Dodgers’ magic number is 1, California’s changing license-plate sequences because the state ran out of combos (Tim doesn’t care; his daughter does), and he wonders if inmates still stamp the plates. Burbank Airport’s new terminal opens October 13 — Timmy’s birthday — so naturally it should be Conway Airport. 

After a brutal week in the Valley, Universal debuts the Fast & Furious Hollywood Drift, billed as the fastest coaster at any Universal park. The crew can’t wait; Toluca Lake neighbors are putting up a sound wall. Wear the belt. Timmy still loves the wooden one at Knott’s. 

7:05— The E-bike buyback down in Orange County has been very successful, with around 1,000 of those bikes taken off the road. OC District Attorney Todd Spitzer is on the phone to talk about the success of the program, where parents traded their kids' bikes for gift cards to ensure they don't crack their skulls or break any bones on the road. 

7:20— Did you know? Leslie David Baker, who played Stanley on "The Office," is now the co-owner of Honey Baked Ham on Ventura Blvd! Atta boy! In other news, Conway really enjoys going to the mall with his daughter, who'll be turning 21 in a few weeks. Atta girl! It's because there are so many cars on the road that the state has run out of numbers and has to change variations: three numbers, three letters, then one number. Timmy doesn't really care, but his daughter sure does. And that's why we're talking about it now. Timmy wonders if prisoners still make license plates. Burbank Airport's new terminal is opening for business on October 13. And Timmy is its No. 1 fan. Should it be renamed "The Conway Airport"? It is opening on his birthday, after all! 

7:50— After a rough week in the Valley and Greater Los Angeles, now for a little relief: Universal Studios has debuted its Fast & Furious Hollywood Drift roller coaster, said to be the fastest roller coaster at any Universal park in the world. The crew cannot wait to ride this thing, and the only people who hate it are the neighbors who live in Toluca Lake, who are erecting a sound barrier. Kids: Remember to use your seatbelts, so your brain doesn't scramble! Timmy loves the wooden one at Knotts Berry Farm.

8:05 — Comedian Gary Gulman did that funny bit on abbreviating state names, and Timmy agrees with Gary that it's a terrible idea for small businesses to go on "Shark Tank," because they will surely get rinsed by the Sharks. Who wants to dance like jesters for their life's work? It's called "Leno's Law" and benefits people who drive vintage cars built between 1976 and 1985 when it comes to smog testing. The exemptions begin in 2028.

And in Irvine, there was a horrible crash, in which a McLaren crashed into a tree, killing the two people in the vehicle, including 27-years-old James Wehr, co-founder South OC Cars & Coffee car show. Hour 3 (9.14)At the Emmys, Martin Short didn’t win — but the cutaway of him ripping up his speech and tossing it on the ground only proved he’s still the funniest, cutest, most gracious guy in Hollywood. Back in the real LA, the $500 million Sixth Street Viaduct has turned into an e-bike and dirt-bike playground, so cops finally shut down a weekend street takeover: nearly 80 citations, bikes and scooters impounded, traffic unblocked. Cue the “CHiPs” flashback.  

Timmy then hits Burger King nuggets, drive-thru line-jumpers, and cheap-eats hacks — use the apps for loyalty and birthday deals, assemble deconstructed sandwiches in the parking lot, and don’t sleep on gas-station chicken, the city’s best dirty bird.  

The hour closes on fashion royalty: Bob Mackie, the “Sultan of Sequins,” has died at 87. Tim knew him from “The Carol Burnett Show”; Mackie also dressed Cher, Tina Turner, Diana Ross, and Miley Cyrus. Hour 1 (9.04) Wheel of Fortune fired the announcer it's had since 2011. Six people in a small hatchback on Angeles Crest, four of them dead, and Marie's swell reaching the beaches tonight. 

6:05 — Sony Pictures Television terminated Wheel of Fortune announcer Jim Thornton, days after suspending him, following what the studio called a thorough investigation. It stems from a complaint another passenger made about what she saw on his laptop during a May 14 American Airlines flight from Charlotte to LAX. Officers met the plane. Thornton was questioned briefly, was not arrested, and has not been charged. His attorney says he did nothing wrong and that he was in a support forum connected to suicide-prevention work he took up after losing a family member. Cro brings up Pete Townshend, arrested in 2003 in Britain's Operation Ore, who said he'd accessed a site as research tied to his own childhood — police cautioned him and put him on the sex offenders register for five years anyway. And the obvious question: is Conway the guy to take over the announcing job? 

6:20 — The swell from Marie reaches Southern California late tonight. Six to ten feet on south-facing beaches, strong rip currents through the holiday weekend, and the worst of it at the south-facing spots. 

6:35 — Zoox started running its driverless robotaxis to and from Harry Reid International in Las Vegas this week, the first fully driverless service at a US airport, with pickups at both terminals closer to baggage claim than the Uber and Lyft zones. Drivers waiting in the lot had mixed feelings — one full-timer said it'll take a lot of business; another said there's nothing they can do about it. Hellraiser makes its Hollywood debut, and Stranger Things, Killer Klowns and Ozzy Osbourne all have houses. The element of surprise is the whole game. 

7:50 — Back in June, during the federal and LAPD operation at MacArthur Park, District Attorney Nathan Hochman made a specific public pledge: Labor Day 2026, middle of the day, he'd be there with his family having a picnic. Hour 3 (9.04) Courts across California are warning people about a jury duty scam that now comes with a fake arrest warrant attached. Plus, two men pulled alive from a Nepal tunnel nine days after the floods. 

8:05 — USC hosts Fresno State tonight. Then the jury duty scam that's cleaning people out: a caller says you missed jury service and there's a warrant out, then texts or emails an official-looking arrest warrant with a dollar figure on it. They may claim to be a US Marshal or a local officer; they may have your name and address, and caller's ID can be spoofed to show a real courthouse number. The FTC put out an alert on it in June. Riverside Superior Court issued its own warning last month. The rule to remember courts never demand payment over the phone, and no government agency asks for a payment app, crypto, gift cards, or a wire. A real summon comes in the mail. Plus, do you track anyone on your phone — and is the phone listening? 

8:20 — Labor Day weekend travel and the state of the Inland Empire on a getaway Friday. The Rams and 49ers play the NFL's first-ever regular season game in Australia next Thursday at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, with the Rams as the designated home team. 8:35 — What's the Conway gang doing this weekend? Plus, a new analysis of federal data puts the average California emergency room visit at three hours and twenty-seven minutes — tenth longest in the country. For someone in a mental health crisis it's five hours and fourteen minutes. About two percent of patients in California leave before anyone sees them, and Loma Linda University Medical Center has the longest typical visit in the state at over seven and a half hours. And Miley drops the Cyrus. 

8:50 — Rescuers in Nepal pulled two men alive out of a hydropower tunnel Friday, nine days after floods killed more than 1,200 people. Search teams heard voices that morning and dug them out of the Trishuli 3A site in Rasuwa district — a mechanical foreman and a mechanical supervisor, one in critical condition. One of them told rescuers there are more people living down there. Roughly 115 are believed to be trapped in that tunnel alone, and about 900 workers are missing across a dozen hydropower projects. Plus, the Chino man fined for growing food in his front yard — in a city whose motto is "Where Everything Grows." Conway is built for Cornhole.

7:05 — Brentwood neighbors say a woman has been defecating on sidewalks near Goshen and Barrington for years, and that she recently threatened a mother out walking with her daughter. Residents say every agency they call gives them the same answer: hands are tied. Councilmember Traci Park's office has asked the county Department of Mental Health to step in, and the mayor's office requested an outreach team. 

7:20 — The Inglewood Transit Connector is a $287.5 million shuttle bus network linking the Metro K Line to SoFi Stadium and the Intuit Dome, targeted to open in April 2028 before the Olympics. To build the main hub, the city is taking a shopping center at Market and Florence through eminent domain — more than 20 businesses, some already handed 90-day notices, with $125 million budgeted for acquisition and relocation. 7:35 — Tony Romo pleaded no contest to OWI in Milwaukee and lost his license for six months, plus a $784 fine, an ignition interlock, and an alcohol assessment. He traced it publicly to back surgeries, pain medication, and what he called an over-reliance on alcohol. Meanwhile Tiger Woods pleaded no contest to reckless driving after a March rollover on Jupiter Island and surrendered his license for five years, with the judge telling him he'd go back to jail if he drives at all. 6:05 — Her reps confirmed to PEOPLE that Parton died Tuesday after a brief battle with cancer; the type was not disclosed. President Trump ordered the American flag lowered across the country for one week, beginning at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Hour 1 (8.21) The City Council voted 10-3 to lift camping bans at a dozen sites in Echo Park, Silver Lake and Hollywood. Conway went to City Hall and then to the encampments to find out what actually changed. 

6:05 PM — Extreme heat warning through Saturday, with the Valley running near 109. We say goodbye to one of our best I.T. guys, Dave Shuttera. Then the camping ban: Councilman Hugo Soto-Martínez got 12 anti-camping zones in his district rescinded — the first time the city has ever pulled a 41.18 designation back. Conway went looking for the real reason, and it isn't the one on the council floor. 

6:20 PM — Somebody backed a car up to Paramount City Hall at 2:15 in the morning and walked off with the kneeling soldier and the bronze rifle from the Armed Forces Memorial. LASD Major Crimes puts the pair at about $100,000. The same memorial got sawed up in May of last year. Los Angeles is now the wire-and-metal theft capital of the country, and this is what that looks like when it comes to a war memorial. 

6:35 PM — We love our listeners, but some of them listen too closely. A green object landed on the floor at Crypto.com Arena during the third quarter of Atlanta's 124-88 win over the Sparks. Angel Reese spotted the guy from the bench, pointed him out, and security had him before he got to the exit. He was wearing a Lakers jersey. 

6:50 PM — NOAA's Climate Prediction Center now puts a very strong El Niño above 90% for this fall and winter and gives October through December a 69% chance of an event bigger than anything on the books since 1950. Hour 3 (8.21) L.A. County's own report puts the Paramount-Warner Bros. deal at 4,500 film and TV jobs lost over three years — on top of the 52,000 the region has already shed since 2022. And that's if the studios stay. 

8:05 PM — Attention, Angelenos. A report to the Board of Supervisors this week from the county's Department of Economic Opportunity and CVL Economics says the Paramount Skydance–Warner Bros. Discovery merger would cost roughly 4,500 direct film and TV jobs in the county, with more than 10,000 total job-years and billions in economic activity at risk. That's the version where the merged company stays here. David Ellison is threatening to move operations to Texas or Tennessee if Rob Bonta won't come to the table by October 1. Bonta and eleven other attorneys general are suing to block the deal, and trial isn't until March. Then a burglary suspect in a Honda Accord led LAPD for over an hour through the Valley — through a CSUN parking structure, through a gas station, T-boned by an innocent driver in Granada Hills — before pulling a U-turn on the 405 and going head-on into a CHP SUV in North Hills. He ran. He didn't get far. 

8:20 PM — Leveling Out: come meet Stu Mundel at Dave & Buster's in Orange. Plus the Los Feliz water main that let go at 11 o'clock last night at Commonwealth and Avocado — a six-inch cast iron line that buckled the sidewalk and flooded a restaurant patio. Crews had it back in service by 8 a.m. LADWP says the city averages two to four of these a day, which is either reassuring or the opposite.

The hour opens on the theft of a very expensive, very old violin, which turns into a detour through the instrument's history and everyone who's held it. Then Tim and Mark on the Doomsday Glacier — Thwaites is nicknamed that because a total collapse would push global sea levels up 26 inches and flood coastal communities. The eastern ice shelf that acts as a natural brake on the glacier is expected to start breaking apart, though scientists put the full collapse on a timescale of centuries, not years. Mark takes it from there with stories from the voiceover audition circuit and what actually happens in those rooms. Hour 1 (8.17) A dirt bike rider runs from police across South LA and into Compton, tears a gas pump off the island mid-pursuit, gets fuel staged for him in a park by other riders — then hides in a trash can and takes one more hit off his vape before the cuffs go on.+ 

We follow it live from the top: the rider weaving through traffic with units behind him, then the stop at the gas station where he pulls away with the pump still attached. The chase picks right back up once he's fueled. Then the part that turns it from a pursuit into something else — he meets up with other riders, and there's a jug of gas waiting in the park so he can top off and keep going. It runs through Compton from there, until he ditches the bike, climbs into a trash can, gets one last puff in, and gives himself up.

Hour 1 (8.17) Newlywed Mark Thompson is in the house and spilling the details on his wedding last week at the Beverly Hills Courthouse — so romantic! He joked the celebrant was so great he’s already planning to use her for his next wedding, and he fully expected the whole thing to feel like signing paperwork at a drive-thru window. (And no, the blushing groom did not take the bride’s last name.)  

The mood turns more serious as Timmy touches on the tragic news of Hayden Panettiere’s shocking passing at just 36 — a former child actress who endured a lot in Hollywood, had given up parental rights to her only child years earlier, and was found unresponsive in a South Carolina apartment from an apparent drug-related cardiac arrest.
