I’ve seen tons of videos and courses that promise to teach you how to speak English just like a native speaker. They usually focus on slang, idioms, and pronunciation patterns that only natives use. The idea is, if you just say the same things that natives say, you’ll sound like one too — but here’s the problem: most learners are copying the results, not the process.

Trying to sound like a native is pointless if you’re still learning like a non-native. Most people study English the way they’d study math or science — by memorizing rules, formulas, and vocabulary lists. But native speakers don’t study their language… they live it. They’re immersed in it from birth, constantly soaking up and imitating what they see and hear. And long before they ever study grammar formally, they can already speak fluently.

The Valley Girl accent is a style of speaking associated with young women from California's San Fernando Valley (Northern suburbs of Los Angeles) in the 1970s and 1980s. It became famous through movies, TV shows, and pop culture, and many people now use "Valley Girl" to describe both an accent and a speaking style.

As you know, it can be extremely useful to focus on one dialect/accent of a foreign language when trying to learn how to sound like a native speaker. In fact, this is something I highly encourage. — All I ask, however, is that when you’re learning to speak English, you don’t chose this one.

Being a parent is one of the many things in life that doesn’t come with an instruction manual. So naturally anyone who decides to become a parent is bound to make mistakes with the kids at some point. I don't have kids, but I have to imagine that as a parent, you're making mistakes all the time. — I mean, as a human, we're making mistakes all the time so I'm sure there's no difference.

One of the most detrimental mistakes that I've seen countless times and also experienced myself is what some people might call over-functioning for one’s children.

Over-functioning is basically doing things for your children that they can do for themselves. Some people say they do it out of love, others do it out of fear, but at the end of the day, constantly doing things for people that they can do for themselves isn't always a simple act of kindness. Sometimes you can train those people to be so dependent on you that they can't do anything for themselves. And that's not good for anyone.

So in today's episode, we're going to listen to a short clip from a conversation about this topic and I'll be here to explain all the nouns, verbs, and adjectives and then I’ll leave you with something to think about.

There are many great English teachers out there, but the sad truth is that some are just looking to profit off your ignorance and insecurity.
