How do you begin to rebuild your life and yourself?
In Part 2 of this For Mannerless Women conversation, Adelle sits down with psychologist and trauma therapist Perpetua Chomba to explore healing after narcissistic abuse. They talk about making sense of what happened without blaming yourself, grieving the relationship and future you imagined, rebuilding self-trust and rediscovering the parts of yourself you may have stopped expressing along the way.
Perpetua also shares why leaving a harmful relationship can require practical planning from finances and where you’ll stay to seeking legal advice and identifying people you can safely lean on. The conversation also explores harmful family relationships, boundaries, choosing what safety looks like for you, and questions sent in by the For Mannerless Women community. And ultimately, it’s a conversation about returning to yourself and building a life that doesn’t require you to abandon who you are.

When was the last time you spent time alone without reaching for your phone, filling the silence, or asking someone else what they think?
Why being alone can feel uncomfortable when we've spent years prioritizing other people's needs.
This week on The Mid Week Tease, Adelle Onyango explores how solitude and silence can help women reconnect with themselves, rediscover what they actually want, and rebuild trust in their own intuition. From the expectations placed on women to constantly be available to others, to the discomfort that can arise when everything finally goes quiet, this episode is an invitation to get curious about the relationship you have with yourself. In this episode, Adelle unpacks:
How silence can help us recognize our own preferences, desires, and boundaries.
The difference between intuition, fear, and anxiety.
Why solitude and loneliness aren't the same thing, and why needing connection is human.
Five practical ways to create more intentional moments of solitude in your everyday life.
Because learning to enjoy your own company isn't about becoming a woman who needs nobody. It's about becoming a woman who knows herself.

Have you ever disliked a woman who hadn't actually done anything to you? Maybe her confidence irritated you, her success made you uncomfortable, or you found yourself picking apart her life without really understanding why. What if the problem isn't her, but what her life brings up in you?
The psychological difference between jealousy and envy.
In this week's episode of The Mid Week Tease, Adelle Onyango unpacks jealousy, envy, and the uncomfortable ways comparison can turn into shame, insecurity, and sometimes hostility toward other women. We explore the difference between jealousy and envy, why another woman's success can make us question our own worth, and how the expectations placed on women can make us see one another as competition. Most importantly, Adelle shares seven practical ways to navigate jealousy without projecting it onto other women. Because feeling jealous doesn't make you a bad person. But what you do with that feeling matters.
In this episode, we explore:
How comparison can trigger shame, fear, and insecurity.
Why we sometimes criticise women whose lives reflect something we desire.
How to celebrate a friend while navigating your own disappointment.
Seven practical ways to understand and manage jealousy.
How to turn comparison into a better understanding of what you want for yourself.

In Part 1 of Lisa Gaitho’s story, she takes us from a playful childhood growing up in Nairobi West to a high school experience she desperately wanted to escape and into years of trying to figure out where she belonged. Lisa tried journalism. She tried hotel and restaurant management. She eventually found culinary school, which took her from Nairobi to South Africa. But when she returned home ready to begin her career, the reality she encountered made her question whether this was the life she wanted after all. Suddenly, she was back home watching the people around her move forward while she wrestled with one overwhelming question: What am I actually doing with my life?
Lisa speaks candidly about the pressure she put on herself to have everything figured out, feeling like she was wasting time, and how dark that period of uncertainty became. And just when she has no idea what comes next, she meets someone who will take her life in a completely unexpected direction. This is Part 1 of Lisa’s three-part story.

What if the life you really want begins after the age you were told you should have everything figured out?
In this episode of For Mannerless Women, Adelle sits down with Sally Sawe, Co-Founder and COO of The Partnership Agency, for a beautiful conversation about ageing, starting again and giving yourself permission to build a life that is entirely your own. Approaching 40, Sally walked away from a long-term relationship and began questioning the definition of a “full life” she had inherited. Did it have to include marriage? Children? Could she define it differently for herself?
Then at 53, after 20 years at WPP Scangroup, Sally made another huge pivot: she co-founded her own advertising agency. What began with five people working from a garden has since grown to a team of more than 100.
In this conversation, we talk about:
• Starting again at any age
• Why ageing can bring more confidence, not less
• Being happily single and child-free
• Defining a full life outside marriage and motherhood
• Leaving relationships that no longer serve you
• Learning to enjoy your own company
• Building self-trust and listening to your inner voice
• Starting a business in your 50s
• Beginning again after 20 years in one career
• Letting go of ego when you have to start small
• Why experience becomes an advantage as you age
• Giving yourself permission instead of waiting for it from others
Sally’s Mannerless Message is simple: “Be as ungovernable as you can be.”Give yourself permission to change your mind, begin again and live your life fully.

So Why Do You Still Want to Go Back? | Mid Week Tease
Leaving a harmful relationship is one thing. Staying gone can be another battle entirely.
Inspired by Ann’s story on the Legally Clueless podcast, this week Adelle explores what it actually means to choose yourself while trying to leave an emotionally abusive or harmful relationship and in the days, weeks and months after you’ve walked away. Because going back doesn’t make you weak.In this episode, we unpack why you can know someone is hurting you and still miss them, the role attachment and intermittent reinforcement can play in keeping us connected to harmful relationships, and why shame isn’t a useful tool for helping women leave.
Adelle also shares 8 practical ways to keep choosing yourself, including therapist Atsede Scarseth’s advice to create a “reality list,” use a 24-hour rule before making contact, remove easy access to an ex, ask yourself what you actually miss, and allow grief to exist without interpreting it as a sign that you should go back.
Plus: why you need a “don’t go back alone” system, how replacing the routines of a relationship can help you rebuild your life, and why returning to someone who hurt you can be treated as information rather than evidence that you’ve failed.
In this episode:
• Why leaving a harmful relationship can be so difficult
• Why going back does not make you weak
• Trauma bonds and intermittent reinforcement
• Making a reality list for moments of nostalgia
• The 24-hour rule when you want to reach out
• Removing easy access and creating boundaries
• Asking yourself what you actually miss
• Why missing someone doesn't mean leaving was a mistake
• Building a support system that doesn't shame you
• Replacing the routines your relationship once occupied
• What to ask yourself if you do go back
• Rebuilding self-trust after a harmful relationship

If you are experiencing abuse, coercive control, stalking or threats, please consider creating a safety plan and reaching out to a trusted person or domestic violence support service. Leaving an abusive relationship can sometimes increase risk, and you do not have to navigate that process alone.

After eight years of loving someone, what happens when you finally find the answers to the questions you’ve been asking all along?
In the final part of Ann Wachera’s story, we pick up after another painful breakup with the man Ann once believed she would marry.Ann tries to move forward. She blocks him. Unblocks him. Goes to therapy. And eventually, the two find themselves back in each other’s lives. Then one day, he comes to Ann’s apartment. When he steps away to move his car, he leaves his phone behind.Ann knows the password. She opens WhatsApp.And what she finds forces her to confront the truth about the relationship she had spent eight years trying to understand. There are multiple women, including women Ann had questioned him about while they were together. There are conversations, photographs and eventually admissions that make Ann question not only who this man was, but who she had become inside this relationship.
In this final chapter, Ann reflects on betrayal, waiting until marriage, the difficulty of letting go, the questions she still has, and what healing looks like when part of you still loves the person who hurt you. Ann’s story also leaves us with a bigger question: what does it mean to choose yourself when you have spent years choosing someone who repeatedly did not choose you? This is the final part of Ann Wachera’s three-part story.

In this episode of For Mannerless Women, Adelle sits down with Connie Tipis, clinical psychologist and Co-Founder & CEO of Double Dee’s Lingerie Kenya & Uganda for a conversation about body shame, body confidence and learning to come home to ourselves. Connie shares how growing up fuller-busted changed the way she moved through the world. She stopped swimming, covered her body and learnt very early that having breasts could attract judgement, assumptions and shame.
That experience would eventually lead her to co-found Double Dee’s and spend the next decade having intimate conversations with women about our bodies from inside fitting rooms across East Africa. Adelle and Connie talk about the ways girls learn to hide their bodies, the striking differences Connie has observed between Kenyan and Ugandan women, wearing beautiful underwear for yourself, mirror work, taking pictures of the body you have today, and why caring for your body can look very different when the goal becomes health and longevity rather than making yourself acceptable to other people.
IN THIS EPISODE:
– How body shame begins for African girls
– Growing up fuller-busted and being sexualised early
– Why body shame can stop girls from participating in sports
– How our upbringing shapes our relationship with our bodies
– What Connie has observed about women in Kenya vs Uganda
– African traditions around women’s bodies, sexuality and pleasure
– Wearing lingerie for yourself, not somebody else
– Mirror work and learning to actually look at your body
– Why you should take pictures of yourself now
– Choosing strength, health and longevity over appearance
– Connie’s reminder to become a “selfless, selfish woman”

This week on The Mid Week Tease, Adelle is looking at 10 of the worst pieces of advice women are given, in her opinion.
Why women are still encouraged to make themselves smaller so men don’t feel intimidated. The difference between respect and submission in relationships. Why “keep your marriage private” can sometimes become dangerous advice. How “men are just like that” shifts responsibility from men onto women. The invisible labour hidden inside the idea that women are “the heart of the home.”Why female endurance is so often romanticised as strength. Why a man's fidelity is not a woman's responsibility to manage. The expectation that a woman’s career should be the flexible one once family enters the picture. Why motherhood should be a choice not an inevitable destination for every woman. And the bigger question underneath all of it: what choices would women make if having a man wasn’t treated as one of the greatest validations of our lives?Adelle also reflects on some of the advice she received while married and asks whether some of what previous generations passed down as wisdom may actually have been survival strategies for navigating systems women did not design. Because we can honour the women who survived using those strategies without deciding that we have to inherit them.
From being told to reduce your financial ambitions so you don’t intimidate a man, to submitting for the sake of peace, enduring because “marriage is hard,” putting your career second, maintaining your appearance so a man doesn’t cheat, and being told that ultimately, every woman needs a man. Some of this advice is so familiar that we rarely stop to ask where it came from or who it actually benefits.
In this episode, Adelle explores how much of the advice women inherit about love, marriage, motherhood, money and ambition can quietly ask us to shrink, serve, endure and perform in order to fit comfortably into patriarchal expectations. We get into:

What happens when you see the red flags, ask the questions and even find some of the answers but you’re still not ready to let go of the future you imagined with someone?
In Part 2 of Ann’s story, we pick up after Ann discovers the first lie in a relationship she believes is leading to marriage. As the relationship continues, Ann and her partner move in together and begin imagining a future. But alongside those plans come more questions. Other women. Stories that don’t quite add up. Moments that leave Ann searching for answers and wondering whether she can trust what she’s being told.
Ann takes us through moving in together, investigating one of the women she suspects is connected to her partner, walking away from the relationship, finding her footing in her career, and eventually finding her way back to him. Years into their relationship, they begin seriously talking about marriage and the life they want to build together. And then, seemingly out of nowhere, he tells Ann he has lost interest in her.
In this episode, Adelle also shares some of your responses to the question: What’s one lesson your 30s have given you so far? and teases the conversations we’ll be having at For Mannerless Women Live about identity, love, friendship, career, boundaries, starting over and learning to choose yourself.
This is Part 2 of Ann’s three-part story. The final part continues next Monday.

They unpack the ways women can be conditioned to confuse love with endless sacrifice, why chaos can feel familiar when you haven't experienced calm love, and how low self-esteem can shape the relationships we choose, even when we appear confident on the outside.

Kaz opens up about navigating separation and the grief of losing not only a relationship, but the future she thought she would have. She shares why being lonely on her own feels different from being lonely inside a relationship, how she's learning to sit with difficult emotions instead of numbing them, and what it means to come home to yourself even when that journey can feel lonely.
They also reflect on losing their mothers, carrying grief through different chapters of adulthood, finding connection with their ancestors, and learning to recognise beauty and magic even while life is difficult. Kaz shares the story behind reopening her pole and movement studio and why she's intentionally creating a shame-free, judgement-free space where women, queer people, Kenyans and Africans can move their bodies, find community and simply be.
The conversation also explores the relationships we're taught to prioritise. What happens when we stop placing romantic relationships at the centre of our lives? What could our friendships become if we poured the same intentionality into them? And how do we create community when the structures around us were largely designed for people who followed the conventional path?
Kaz's Mannerless Message: "The hardest thing you're ever going to have to do is learn to forgive yourself. Your biggest relationship with any human being is going to be the relationship that you have with yourself.”

In this week's episode, Tanya Nyambura takes us back to her childhood, where academic performance wasn't just about school, it determined how you were seen, how you felt about yourself, and what you believed your future would become.

What if the life you've been told to want isn't the only beautiful life available to you?
This week on For Mannerless Women, Adelle sits down with Zimbabwean musician, mbira player, published poet and artist Hope Masike for a conversation about reclaiming freedom, questioning the timelines women inherit, and creating a life that feels deeply aligned. Together they explore what colonization took from African women beyond land, why knowing your body is an act of reclamation, the joy of choosing yourself instead of waiting to be chosen, and how creativity can become both healing and resistance.
In this episode, we unpack:
Why women are taught to wait to be chosen instead of learning how to choose. The pressure to marry, have children and "keep up" with society's timeline. How to stop feeling like you're behind in life.Reclaiming our bodies after generations of silence and shame. What colonization stole from African women beyond land. Why creativity can become one of our greatest healing tools. The freedom that comes from building a life on your own terms. Why every woman deserves to know that her life has purpose beyond societal expectations.Connect with Hope Masike

Women account for nearly 80% of people diagnosed with autoimmune diseases. While biology, hormones, genetics and environmental factors are all important pieces of the puzzle, another question deserves our attention:What does decades of emotional suppression, chronic caregiving and relentless stress do to a woman's body?
In this week's Mid Week Tease, Adelle explores the socio-cultural expectations placed on women, the physiological effects of chronic stress, and the thought-provoking work of physician Gabor Maté, who invites us to consider the connection between emotional health and physical wellbeing. This episode is not about blaming women for illness. Instead, it's an invitation to think more deeply about what happens when women spend a lifetime putting themselves last.In this episode:

And who benefits when women spend their lives trying to fit into that role?

This week on Mid Week Tease, we're talking about generational cycles! Not just the obvious ones, but the invisible family rules, coping mechanisms, beliefs and survival strategies that quietly shape our lives. But what happens when we begin to realize some of what we've called personality is actually inherited pain?

This week on The Mid Week Tease, Adelle explores one of the most confusing relationship dynamics: loving someone who is deeply attached to being the victim. Not everyone who has experienced pain is stuck in victimhood. Many people carry trauma, grief and heartbreak while still taking accountability for their actions. But what happens when someone's wounds become their identity? When every ex was toxic, every friendship ended in betrayal, every boss was unfair, and every conflict somehow ends with them being the injured party? In this episode, Adelle unpacks:

By Form Two, the pressure had become so overwhelming that she began questioning whether life was worth living. But through the unwavering support of her parents, a growing belief in herself, and a purpose bigger than her grades, Jeanette slowly began to rewrite the story she had been told about who she was. This is a powerful story about resilience, self-worth, and why a child's potential can never be measured by exam results.

As women, we're often praised for how much we can endure. We celebrate resilience, sacrifice, and survival. But what happens when pain becomes the primary way we understand ourselves? In this episode, Adelle unpacks why so many women build identities around struggle, why suffering is often mistaken for strength, and how pain can quietly become the centre of our lives.
She also explores the radical possibility that joy, delight, pleasure, beauty, and aliveness are not rewards we earn after healing, they are part of what it means to be human. If you've ever found yourself defining yourself by what you've survived, this episode is an invitation to imagine who you might be beyond your pain.

In this deeply relatable episode, Jeanette shares memories of being publicly shamed for her grades, experiencing favoritism from teachers, and carrying the painful belief that her academic performance determined her future.
As teachers and classmates repeatedly reinforced the idea that she wasn't smart enough, she began to internalize those messages and doubt herself. But behind her was a family that never stopped believing in her. This is part one of Jeanette's story.

That instability followed her into adulthood, shaping how she approached friendships, career choices, and her sense of identity. Despite performing well in school and receiving opportunities for further education, Blessing found herself unable to choose a path because stability itself felt unfamiliar. Some days we forget. We forget how loved we are. We forget the moments that made us proud.
We forget the days we laughed until our stomach hurt. And it’s not because those moments didn’t happen. Psychology shows that our brains have a negativity bias, meaning painful experiences stick longer than joyful ones. Over time, our minds can begin to tell us a story that life has mostly been difficult, even when joy has been present all along.
In this week’s episode of The Mid Week Tease, Adelle shares a practice she calls The Life Box. It’s exactly what it sounds like: a physical box filled with small objects that hold memories of love, joy, pride, and meaningful moments. Inside her life box are things like:
• Letters from friends
• A birthday card from her mum from when she turned 10
• Receipts from favorite solo trips
• Bicycle tour receipts from one of her favorite activities
• A memory card filled with career highlights she’s proud of
• And even memes that made her laugh during different seasons of life It’s a small box, but it holds powerful reminders of a life that has contained joy.
In this episode, Adelle explores the psychology behind why practices like this matter, including:
• Negativity bias, why our brains remember pain more strongly than joy
• Savoring, a positive psychology practice that helps us re-experience joyful memories
• Attachment theory, how reminders of love help regulate our nervous system
• Why creating a personal archive of joyful moments can support emotional resilience
She also shares simple ways you can create your own version of a life box, including:
• A joy folder on your phone
• A memory jar
• A gratitude or joy journal
• A voice note archive for your future self
• A digital highlight reel of moments that made you proud Because sometimes what we need most is evidence. Evidence that we have been loved. Evidence that joy has visited our lives before. Evidence that beautiful moments have already happened, and will happen again.

In this week’s episode of The Midweek Tease, Adelle reflects on a powerful idea from the final episode of Difference She Makes with South African human rights lawyer Sibongile Ndashe. While Sibongile spends her career challenging institutions and pushing legal systems to protect women, one line from the conversation stayed with Adelle long after the interview ended: “We must be gentle with each other. But first let us be gentle with ourselves.” So many women are disciplined, ambitious, and unwavering in what they build and fight for. But when it comes to themselves, that same compassion often disappears. In this episode, Adelle explores:
Why high-achieving women are often their own harshest criticsThe psychology of self-compassion and why it strengthens resilienceThe difference between accountability and shameHow gentleness toward yourself can coexist with unwavering standardsIf you’ve ever replayed a mistake over and over, questioned your worth after one setback, or pushed yourself harder than you would ever push a friend, this episode is for you. Because softness toward yourself is not weakness.
It may be the very thing that sustains your strength.

In Episode 367 of the Legally Clueless Podcast, we share Part 1 of Nkirote’s powerful story. Born fully sighted in Meru County, Nkirote’s childhood was marked by instability, moving from one household to another, losing her primary caregiver, and navigating neglect and emotional hardship at a young age. At just 12–13 years old, her eyesight began deteriorating. What started as subtle vision problems would later be diagnosed as glaucoma, by the time teachers intervened, one eye had already lost sight. In this deeply moving episode, Nkirote shares:

In this week’s Midweek Tease, we unpack a powerful idea inspired by my recent conversation with Odunoluwa Longe on Difference She Makes: Your purpose should be your life, not your job. For many high-achieving women, identity and productivity have become intertwined. We are praised for being exceptional, indispensable, reliable. But what happens when performance becomes the only place we feel worthy? In this reflective episode, we explore:

In this week’s Mid Week Tease, I unpack something that stopped me in my tracks during my conversation with Natasha Ali on Difference She Makes. She said, almost laughing, “I think I’m a little delusional.” But what if that “delusion” is actually optimism bias?
What if it’s self-efficacy?
What if it’s the power of possible selves?
In this episode, we explore:
Maybe your belief is data.

In this episode of Difference She Makes, we explore how professional excellence becomes a quiet but powerful form of resistance inside deeply gendered institutions. Our guest, Ruth Tanui, is an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya and the Founder and Managing Partner of Tanui & Company Advocates.
Through her journey, from navigating hostile work environments to building her own law firm, Ruth shows us how competence, credibility, and consistency can reshape institutional culture from the inside. This conversation goes beyond representation. It asks harder questions about pay inequity, toxic leadership, confidence gaps, and the invisible rules women are expected to follow at work and what it takes to unlearn them.
In this episode, we explore:
• Why excellence, not just access, determines who is trusted and promoted
• How toxic law firm cultures push women to shrink, self-doubt, or exit
• The unspoken ways gender bias shows up in hiring, pay, and client trust
• What it looks like to build a fair, human-centered law firm culture
• Why culture often shifts faster in corridors than in courtrooms
Ruth also reflects on the traditions she had to unlearn, the confidence she had to reclaim, and how mentorship and community sustain women navigating male-dominated professions.
Before you watch, we want to hear from you: Where do you think culture shifts faster in the courtroom, in the corridors of institutions, or in everyday conversations? Share your thoughts in the comments.

What if “treating yourself” isn’t indulgence but a psychological necessity? In this week’s Mid Week Tease, Adelle reflects on how she’s learned to intentionally place joy into her life, especially around birthdays. From solo stays by the pool with poetry and silence, to beach days and bicycle tours, this episode explores why joy deserves to be planned, not postponed. Drawing from personal ritual and psychology-backed research, Adelle unpacks why joy plays a critical role in emotional regulation, resilience, and healing, particularly for women who have been conditioned to survive instead of savor.
Why treating yourself isn’t about luxury, but nervous system regulationHow intentional joy builds emotional resilience over timeThe difference between escapism and self-attunementWhy small, repeated pleasures matter more than big, rare onesHow to identify what actually brings you joy (not what looks good online)Simple, accessible ways to begin treating yourself without guiltGentle reflection questions from the episode:
You’ll also hear insights inspired by the work of Barbara Fredrickson, whose research shows that positive emotions don’t just feel good they broaden our thinking and build long-term emotional strength. This episode is an invitation to stop waiting for permission to enjoy your life, and to start treating joy as maintenance not a reward. In this episode, we explore:
When was the last time I did something purely because it brought me joy? What environments help my body soften and expand? What small joy have I been postponing and why?Listen if you’re:

In this episode of Difference She Makes, we turn our focus to policies, the internal rules that determine whether institutions protect people in practice or only on paper. Adelle Onyango is joined by Zikhona Ndlebe, a South Africa–based judicial governance expert who has worked at the heart of policy reform within the legal system. Zikhona helps us understand why policies are not just administrative tools, but powerful mechanisms that shape culture, accountability, and safety, especially for women. This conversation unpacks how sexual misconduct has long existed in legal institutions even when it was never formally named, why denial protects systems more than people, and how policy gaps leave survivors without recourse. Zikhona also explains why timing matters: when harm occurs before a policy exists, justice becomes far more difficult to achieve. We explore:
Why internal workplace policies matter as much as laws and constitutionsHow power, silence, and denial operate inside legal institutionsThe real-world consequences of policy gaps for women in lawWhy implementation matters more than intentionWhat other African countries can learn from South Africa’s experienceThis episode is a reminder that justice is not only written in legislation, it is lived through policy, practice, and accountability.
Listener question:
What’s one workplace policy you wish existed and was actually enforced?

Kenya’s 2010 Constitution is often praised as one of the most progressive in the world, but a constitution alone does not create justice. People do.
In this opening episode of Difference She Makes, host Adelle Onyango sits down with Anne Ireri, Executive Director of FIDA Kenya, to explore how women helped shape Kenya’s constitutional journey and the everyday work required to protect those gains.
Anne reflects on her full-circle journey from intern to leader, the behind-the-scenes resistance women faced during constitutional reform, and why vigilance is essential to prevent gender equality from being watered down by culture, politics, or complacency.
This conversation goes beyond legal theory to ask a deeper question:
What does it really take to turn “We the People” into lived reality especially for women and girls?
In this episode, we explore:
• What a constitution actually is and why ownership matters
• How Kenyan women influenced the 2010 Constitution from the inside
• Why constitutions are not self-executing, people breathe life into them
• The tension between culture, tradition, and constitutional equality
• Women’s rights as family rights and societal rights
• What African countries can learn from Kenya’s constitutional journey
