It’s an EmMajority Report Thursday! She speaks with Max Felker-Kantor, associate professor of history at Ball State University, to discuss his recent book DARE to Say No: Policing and the War on Drugs in Schools. Then, she speaks with journalist Erin Reed, author of the Erin In The Morning newsletter on SubStack, to discuss the recent gender identity review by the National Health Services (NHS) in the United Kingdom. First, Emma runs through updates on Israel’s ongoing assault on Rafah, ongoing institutional support for Israel’s genocide among the US government and major corporations, US sanctions against Iran, the White House’s climate stance, Boeing hearings, Disneyland unionization, Biden’s polling numbers, Mike Johnson’s failing speakership, and the Senate’s rejection of the Mayorkas impeachment sham, before parsing a little deeper through the recent report on the horrendous abuse and torture of Palestinian hostages in Israel and the ongoing showdown between Columbia University’s anti-zionist student body, and hyper-zionist institutional leadership. Professor Max Felker-Kantor then joins, diving right into the evolution of DARE’s prevalence in US schools and society, and how it got its start with the LAPD. First, Professor Felker-Kantor walks Emma through the precursor to DARE, with LA Chief of Police Darrel Gates’ strategy throughout the 1970s to send undercover officers into schools to bust drug dealers – a project that had been failing as the War on Drugs kicked into full swing by the end of the decade – and his subsequent attempt to shift from cracking down on the supply end of the War on Drugs, to cracking down on the demand. Expanding on this, Felker-Kantor explores the creation of DARE as a joint venture between the LAPD and local schools, with officers essentially becoming ingrained the education environment and classrooms, even going as far as to pitch themselves as friends and mentors to the students, and quickly taking off across the US over the 1980s, before walking through the slow collapse of the program as more and more evidence came out about the strategy’s failure in preventing drug addiction or exposure. Wrapping up, Max walks Emma through the extensive funding network of the DARE program, beginning with internal LAPD funding before quickly expanding to state and federal grants over the 1980s and start of the ‘90s, and why its particular ability to cling to its non-profit status has allowed it to remain, in some capacity, as a global organization today. Erin Reed and Emma then jump right into the background for the UK’s recent Cass Report on transgender care, stepping back to briefly cover the rise of transphobic activism in the UK at the end of the 2010s, and the major policy impacts it had despite fringe following, including the NHS-sponsored ‘independent’ and ‘unbiased’ review by Hillary Cass. After giving some background on the evidently not-so-unbiased Cass herself, Reed parses through the clear failure of the report itself to live up to these supposed standards, actively excluding both trans voices and experts on trans care from the report, relying on outdated and fraudulent statistics (compiled by notorious homophobes nonetheless), and repeatedly requiring absurdly high standards for trans care – standards not met by the vast majority of both adult and pediatric care – while rarely substantiating any of the claims about the supposed dangers.

And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder as they talk with Colin from Missouri about sports team owners extorting taxpayers, address the absurdity of “woke” segregation, and watch Professor Ruha Benjamin absolutely nail her acceptance speech for a Spelman College honorary degree by calling out institutional support for genocide and white supremacy. They also dive into the ongoing suppression of student activist voices on college campuses right now, with a particular focus on Columbia University’s ongoing campus activism and the administrative backlash, before talking with Genevieve from Tucson about Operation Olive Branch’s work helping Palestinians in Gaza. After touching on the mass manufacturing errors facing Tesla’s Cybertrucks, they talk with Erin from Atlanta about Cobb County State candidate Gabriel Sanchez, and watch Matt Walsh pretend like nobody cares about women’s sports, after months of obsessing about women’s sports, plus, your calls and IMs!

It’s Hump Day! Sam speaks with Daniel Poppen, member of the union organizing committee at the Trader Joe’s location in the North Center neighborhood of Chicago, to discuss the staff’s decision to file for a union election. Then, he speaks with Matt Bruenig, founder of the People’s Policy Project, author of the NLRB Edge newsletter, and co-host of “The Bruenigs” podcast, to discuss his recent NLRB filing against Steven Crowder. First, Sam reacts to State Dept. spokesperson Matthew Miller refusing to answer the Associated Press's Matt Lee's question about why they've been unable to verify whether Israel struck an Iranian diplomatic target in Syria. Then, Sam's joined by Dan Poppen as they take us through the steps that led the Trader Joe's North Center location in Chicago to vote for a union election. Dan discusses some of the issues that have been facing Trader Joe's workers, the inspiration they've received from other unionizing Trader Joe's locations around the country, and what they can anticipate going forward after the vote totals are finalized. Then, Sam is joined by Matt Bruenig to discuss his representation of Jared Monroe, AKA "Not Gay Jared", the former "Louder With Crowder" employee, who has filed a complaint with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) against Steven Crowder and the company. Bruenig outlines the main pillars that constitute the NLRB complaint, and provides some context to Jared's experience while working for Steven Crowder, what that entailed, and what they're hoping to achieve as the complaint is arbitrated and decided upon.

And in the Fun Half, Sam reacts to Google employees demonstrating and conducting sit-ins against Google's work with Israel in their New York and California offices. He and Matt then check in on Speaker Johnson's tightrope walk, attempting to pass a supplemental foreign aid bill, which his far-right faction doesn't want. Johnson, who's now referring to him as a "wartime Speaker", is losing soldiers as an outline has been revealed, with Pennsylvania Rep. Scott Perry complaining that there's no border funding in the legislation (it was in another bill that Perry and his cohort didn't support). On the other end, former Kevin McCarthy confidant Rep. Garret Graves asks the all-important question: "What are Republicans getting" from this supplemental? And now, Speaker Johnson is only being offered tepid support from former President Trump, who is now willing to wait and see what happens to him with the motion to vacate looming over his head. Sam and Matt then turn to Trump's hush money trial, with Trump attorney and spokesperson Alina Habba telling Fox's Martha McCallum that Trump will be regarded like *wait for it* Nelson Mandela if he were to be put in jail for violating his gag order. Sam covers the recent Politico scoop of comedian Rob Schneider tanking a performance in front of Senate Republicans and their staffers, before diving into Trump's recent rally this weekend where he heard chants of "Genocide Joe!", to which he responded in part by saying: "You're not wrong". And, finally, Sam and Matt step into Dave Rubin's corner, where Rubin discusses his concerns about his inability to "arbitrage" the divide between the left and the right. Then, they check in on Dave's conversation with Will Cain from last week, where Dave tries his absolute hardest to take shots at Tucker Carlson and Candace Owens while *trying his absolute hardest* not to actually take shots at Tucker Carlson or Candace Owens. It's News Day Tuesday! But first, Sam and Emma speak with Matt Duss, executive vice president at the Center for International Policy, to discuss the events of the past weekend involving Iran & Israel. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Trump’s legal woes, Israel’s ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, the New York Times’ anti-Palestinian bias, the House GOP’s conflicted agenda, DOJ anti-trust, and SCOTUS’ recent attack on protest, before exploring reports on how Trump’s hush money case is devastatingly interfering in his personal life. Matt Duss then joins, first parsing through the context for Iran’s retaliation against Israel, including the consistent communication between Iran and the US, and clear intent from Iran to deescalate in the wake of their attack on Israeli military facilities, before touching on the conflict between the genuine threat of rising tensions in the region and the understanding that this response could have been much worse. After briefly touching on the role that this Iran-Israel affair plays in Bibi Netanyahu’s attempt to cling to power (and Israel’s attempt to maintain international legitimacy), they shift to the US perspective, exploring the complete failure of Biden’s approach to Israel’s genocidal and offensive campaign, and what it has done to undermine his ability to reestablish (or even maintain) an international rules-based order. Happy Monday! Sam and Emma speak with Dylan Penningroth, professor of Law and History at the University of California, Berkeley, to discuss his recent book Before The Movement: The Hidden History of Black Civil Rights. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Iran’s military-specific retaliation to Israel’s bombing of their consulate, Trump’s ongoing hush money trial, FISA renewal, Mike Johnson’s Ukraine package, dropping violent crime and burglary rates, Haiti’s “ruling council,” Tesla’s mass firing, and Biden’s polling, before diving a little deeper into the rationality behind Iran’s approach to Israeli violence. Professor Dylan Penningroth then joins, diving right into the personal story behind his decades-long research into the major evolution of Black civil rights as a concept. Stepping back, Professor Penningroth, looks to the 19th-century conceptualization of Black civil rights, with a particular distinction from any political or social rights, carving out a minuscule space in civil society where Black people were given very particular privileges, first contextualizing what these “civil” privileges entailed (largely relating to low-level contract and property law), before walking through the evolution of these rights in both the reconstruction era and during the subsequent White Supremacist backlash at the turn of the 20th Century. Expanding on this, Penningroth walks through Lincoln’s role in enumerating the ideology of separate political, social, and civil rights in the US (with only the latter needed for true equality), and the consistent pushback from Black activists from the 1830s through the 1960s, insisting that both social and political rights were needed to guarantee the civil. Wrapping up, Dylan walks Sam and Emma through how the mainstream conceptualization of civil rights evolved from the Party of Lincoln to the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s.

And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma discuss the Biden Administration’s careful approach to ongoing developments between Iran and Israel, dive into coverage of Trump’s hush money trial (and MR’s potential coverage), and discuss AOC’s growing role in the Democratic Party. Then, they’re joined by Mark Bankston, partner at the law firm Farrar & Ball, to discuss a new case that he is taking up. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Iran’s impending retaliation against Israel, Israel’s ongoing prevention of certain aid amidst famine in Gaza, Biden’s student loan cancellation, the Senate’s new NLRB legislation, Biden’s closing of the gun show loophole, climate change numbers, and the SCOTUS corruption scandal(s), before diving into Pelosi’s ongoing condescension to Palestine supporters and anti-genocide activists despite her call to halt arms sales to Israel. Digby then joins, diving right into Arizona’s recent State Supreme Court decision that reverted the state to an 1860s law criminalizing abortion, the GOP responding to the ongoing abortion pressure by attempting to make the 15-week appear like a moderate position, and the lies behind the right-wing’s “exceptions” and “states rights” arguments. Next, they look to Donald Trump’s legal woes, as Heather walks Sam and Emma through the genuine threat Trump feels from his hush money trial, first exploring the tabloid fears before tackling the political consequences of a campaign finance violation that has already put Michael Cohen in jail (admittedly on federal charges), before wrapping up with what to expect from this case’s development now that it’s in Alvin Bragg’s court. Mark Bankston then joins, first updating Sam and Emma on the developments in his case representing Ben Brody, who was publicly accused by Elon Musk of being a Neo Nazi involved in a Neo Nazi brawl despite being a 22-year-old Jewish college student in a different state, including the case’s development into discovery and hearings. Next, Bankston breaks down his newest case representing Mauricio Garcia, who was wrongfully identified as the Alan, Texas Neo Nazi shooter by myriad right-wing media outlets from Fox and Newsmax to TimCast and Louder with Crowder, with no retraction or apology despite the obvious journalistic malpractice involved, cementing their lies and attacks on Garcia. Expanding on this, Mark, Sam, and Emma tackle the complete resistance to accountability from the defendants in this case so far, with some even going as far as to downplay the media corrections, from refusing to show the correct photo after showing the wrong one (*cough* Tim Pool *cough*) to fully dubbing the corrections a psyop, before wrapping up with a brief preview of the future of this case.

It’s Hump Day! Sam and Emma speak with Jeremy Kimbrell, a measurement machine operator at the  Mercedes-Benz plant in Vance, Alabama and member of the volunteer organizing committee at the plant, to discuss the plant’s recent decision to file for a union election with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), to join the United Auto Workers (UAW). Then, they speak with Terri Gerstein, director of the Wagner Labor Initiative at New York University, to discuss the recent efforts in different states to weaken or strengthen child labor laws. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Arizona’s major State Supreme Court decision, Biden’s rhetorical and policy developments on Israel, inflation, immigration policy, EPA, ESDA, and FAA operations, and the candidacies of RFK and Cornel West, before diving a little deeper into Arizona’s Supreme Court decision reverting the state’s reproductive policy to an 1864 law. Jeremy Kimbrell then joins, diving right into his history working at Mercedes’ Alabama plant of around 5,000, and the progressive attempts to organize one of two (the other being in South Carolina) Mercedes plans not represented by a collective bargaining agreement, with the major revelations at the UAW in the wake of COVID coming about at the perfect time, and allowing the plant to begin their unionization efforts with the backing of a major union. After tackling the major emphasis on a democratic organizing process, Kimbrell steps back to parse through the recent unfair labor practice filings the plant has filed against Mercedes both domestically, and in German courts, and how they could play into the ongoing unionization process. Terri Gerstein then walks Sam and Emma through the role of child labor law in the US, largely setting stronger safety and work regulations for child labor on both the federal and state levels, and what ongoing attacks from the right are doing to undermine these regulations, including gutting permit requirements and redefining work to allow kids to work in previously-considered-hazardous workplaces. After looking at the particular roles of “fissured workplaces,” and right-wing state legislatures in worsening this issue, wrapping up the interview by tackling the additional issue of the US’ incredibly weak mechanisms of labor enforcement and accountability, and how we can start to change that.

And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma dive deep into the theocratic GOP’s ongoing attack on abortion, from Arizona legislators praying on the state seal to debates and defenses of Trump’s pivot to the “moderate” position of “let the states outlaw it,” before touching on the months late Democratic backlash to Israel’s ongoing genocide. Happy Monday! Sam and Emma speak with David Masciotra, author, lecturer and journalist based in Indiana, to discuss his recent book Exurbia Now: The Battleground of American Democracy. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Israel’s continuing operations in the ethnic cleansing of Gaza, mounting pressure on Biden to halt weapons transfers to Israel, Sec. Mayorkas’ impeachment, student debt relief, unionization, and Mike Johnson’s Ukraine aid package, before diving into Donald Trump’s new middle-ground stance on abortion legislation, and the subtle backlash from his evangelical base. David Masciotra then joins, first outlining the definition of the “exurbs” – distinct from suburbia due to its lower density and greater distance from urban centers, yet much wealthier and with much more robust infrastructure than rural areas – and exploring the particular role they play in bolstering far-right politics electorally. After contextualizing the rise of exurbs as a late-stage development of white flight beginning in the mid-‘90s, with real estate firms building up isolated communities in previously rural towns and using exclusionary politics and property tax gimmicks to recruit those still escaping the growing diversity of urban centers and even some suburban areas, Masciotra walks Sam and Emma through the infrastructure of exurbia’s isolation, with residents largely working outside of their towns while all civic, media, and commercial roles are taken over by mega-churches, casinos, and massive corporations, resulting in little-to-no connection with their community, much less the outside world. Wrapping up, David explores the major issue that comes with addressing these severely isolated communities, particularly when their “problems” largely arise from reactionary cultural issues grounded in racial resentment and Christian nationalism, and why our hope in conquering this issue lies in on-the-ground and bottom-up organizing.

And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma dive into the increasing pressure on Biden to halt weapons transfers to Israel after the IDF’s slaughter of the employees of DC’s favorite Chef José Andrés, Bernie Sanders’ staunch rejection of Biden’s rhetorical posturing of anger with Netanyahu, and Jonathan Guyer’s recent reporting on the role of one Brett McGurk in Biden’s Israel policy (particularly when it comes to the risk of expanding the conflict into a regional war). Jon Stewart discusses Apple’s massive fear of the FTC and Lina Khan, Dawn Staley has no time for transphobic fear-mongers, and far-right weirdos Rudy Giuliani and Brian Glenn posit interesting scientific theories. Bill Maher struggles to find common ground with Billy Dee Williams despite their shared appreciation for blackface.

She speaks with Arvin Alaigh, writer & political activist from New Jersey, currently a Ph.D student at the University of Cambridge, to discuss his recent piece in The Nation entitled "Abolishing the “Ballot Line” Will Reshape Progressive Politics." Then, she speaks with Mya Frazier, journalist based in Columbus, Ohio, to discuss her recent piece in Harper’s entitled “The Eviction Experts.” First, Emma runs through updates on +972’s recent report on Israel’s use of AI technology to bomb the families of Palestinian targets, Biden’s supposed “anger” over Israel’s slaughter of World Central Kitchen workers, Israeli elections, Donald Trump’s legal woes, Ukraine’s war efforts, labor action in Alabama and Chicago, fascism in Texas and Alabama, and emissions reporting, before watching Richard Haass’ call for sanctions against Israel. Arvin Alaigh then joins, first walking through what New Jersey’s “ballot line” voting entailed, and how it drastically reduces the chances of outsider and non-county-endorsed candidates in state primaries. Stepping back, Alaigh walks Emma through the corrupt politics that the ballot line policy has enabled, with two major culprits, Governor Phil Murphy and Senator Bob Menendez, also inspiring the most recent scandal, with Gov. Murphy using his power to push his wife onto the preferred ballot spot to replace recently-indicted Sen. Menendez’s seat, seeing opposition Andy Kim file suit with no pushback from even Murphy’s allies. Wrapping up, Arvin tackles the current state of the suit, and the ongoing injunction against New Jersey’s ballot line policy. Mya Frazier then brings Emma through a brief history of her reporting on eviction and tenant-landlord power dynamics, and how reporting on the wave of evictions in the wake of the end of the COVID-19 eviction moratorium brought her to a corporate landlord conference of the Columbus Apartment Association. Expanding on this, Frazier walks through the major role that tech companies and startups played at the conference, advertising their ability to automate and streamline much of the landlord process, and how the automation trend plays with the increasing private consolidation of housing to severely undermines the power of tenants, bringing mass and constant eviction crisis to places like Columbus (Ohio). Next, Frazier parses through the severe necessity (and near impossibility) of federal housing regulation for tenants’ rights, before wrapping up with a who’s who of the consolidation of the housing market.

It’s Hump Day! And Sam is coming to us LIVE from the Mass Torts Conference in Las Vegas!  Sam and Emma run through updates on Israel’s excuses for the slaughter of World Central Kitchen workers, Biden’s newest military support package for Israel, Biden’s poor swing state polling, yesterday’s primaries, Ukraine aid, Wisconsin politics, and the major earthquake that hit Taiwan, also watching Dr. Thaer Ahmad’s appearance on CNN after his walking out of a meeting where Biden was attempting to reach out to the Arab American community over Gaza. After briefly touching on the specific nature of mass tort law, Sam is joined by Tommy James of Tommy James Law in Birmingham, Alabama, first touching on his history as a trial lawyer and how he began representing institutionalized young people. Diving deeper into his work with kids in the “troubled teen” industry, James walks through how these for-profit institutions take unregulated money from both the state and families in a scam that claims to help the most troubled of kids, despite employing untrained, uncertified, underpaid, and overworked employees, and often leaving children with worse scars than they arrived with. Next, James walks through his recent and ongoing cases in the industry, before expanding on his ongoing cases suing the state DOE and DHR over approving the institutionalizing of children in sub-standard educational settings, and what the success of those cases could mean moving forward. Mike Papantonio of Levin Papantonio Rafferty then talks with Sam about the importance of holding corporations accountable for their crimes against the public, looking into his case against HSBC over their laundering of money for international criminal enterprises and terrorist organizations, why legal structures make it that even the worst of corporate associations can only be punished through civil means, and why, without actual criminal consequences, corporate accountability will continue to be a fantasy. Andy Childers, also from Levin Papantonio Rafferty, then joins to update us on his ongoing case regarding Abbott Labs and Johnson and Johnson’s continued marketing of cow’s milk formulas to preterm infants despite repeated and clear evidence that it has severe health effects in premature babies, including necrotizing enterocolitis, and the arguments this case hinges on. She speaks with Annelle Sheline, a former staffer with President Biden's State Department, to discuss the reasoning behind why she left her post, namely the Biden administration's efforts to continue to supply military assistance to the Israeli military's offensive in Gaza. First, Emma runs through updates on Israel’s murder of World Central Kitchen and expanding fascist effort, major headlines for today’s primaries, Florida’s abortion ban, RFK’s ballot access, Mike Johnson’s Ukraine Aid, and far-right legal battles, before expanding on the details of Israel’s slaughter of WCK workers. Anelle Sheline then joins, diving right into the context for her resignation in protest from Biden’s State Department, exploring her work on Yemen that preceded joining the government, and the continuing human rights work she participated in over the first year of her contract with the government. After parsing through the major factor – Biden’s continuing support for Israel’s genocide of Palestinians in Gaza – for her resignation, Sheline parses through some of the greater (albeit immaterial) dissent within the Biden government, including a State Department that is well-prepared to begin enforcing the human rights and arm-sales policies that the US is currently circumventing to support Israel’s war, also touching on why the electoral pressure of the “uncommitted” vote is having the biggest sway on Biden in terms of dissent. Next, Anelle walks Emma through the greater implications of Biden’s support for apartheid on a global scale, including how it plays into the US’ already degrading status on the international stage following the Iraq War and Donald Trump, and Israel’s continuing insistence on expanding the conflict throughout the Middle East, before wrapping up by touching on the role of the Abraham Accords in pushing this conflict, and the overwhelming domestic dissent facing Israel’s occupation (despite warming relations with some regimes). Emma also parses through the various “uncommitted” movements in today’s democratic primaries, and Wisconsin’s ballot initiatives.

Expanding on this, Professor Varoufakis explores the role of these platforms’ ownership of the means of behavioral modification (via the extraction of data, once again, not produced by them) as an example of what he calls “cloud capital,” which takes up massive proportions of the global GDP and siphons it off from the labor market, before stepping back to analyze the role of the 2008 financial crisis and the commitment to the neoliberal dynamic of austerity for the people, socialism for the banks, in allowing the private world to funnel massive amounts of investment into cloud capital and allow existing companies (Meta, Google, Amazon, etc) to establish these digital fiefdoms. Wrapping up, Professor Yanis Varoufakis tackles the role that various fiscal and anti-trust policies, the idea of a bill of digital rights, and workplace democratization could play in helping to reclaim and reshape these technofeudalist fiefdoms.

Casey Michel then joins, diving right into Orbán’s role as Hungary’s authoritarian Prime Minister, serving his 14th year, and far-right icon in the war against “wokeness” and democracy. Expanding on this, Michel parses through Orbán’s recent low-key visit to the US to meet with the Heritage Foundation, walking through the nationalist parallels between Trump and Orbán (particularly with their evangelical bases), the influence that modern autocrats like Putin and original fascists like Mussolini have provided to Orbán regime, and how the US far-right think tanks are attempting to pick up on his blueprint. Professor Joel Thornton then walks Emma through the context for IQAir’s recent report on the severe standing of air quality globally in 2023, including the for-profit incentives of the company, and the wide breadth of standards for the research, before stepping back to explore what we can glean from the report, and the genuine state of air pollution. Expanding on this, Professor Thornton explores the major role climate change has played in offsetting the progress various countries have made in containing the proliferation of particulates, with 2023’s myriad forest fires playing a major role in the year’s problem of air quality, and assesses the major effects these particulates can have on human health, impacting everything from the respiratory tract to cognitive function.

It’s Hump Day! Sam speaks with Lisa Heinzerling, law professor at Georgetown University, to discuss the impact of the Supreme Court’s upcoming rulings on Loper Bright Enterprises  v. Raimondo & Relentless v. Department of Commerce, as well as the court hearing arguments yesterday regarding mifepristone and medication abortion. Then, Sam speaks with Heather Herbert, a hospice registered nurse at PeaceHealth Medical Center in Springfield, Oregon and member of the Oregon Nurses Association (ONA),  to discuss the recent strike action at the hospital and the new labor complaints they’ve filed with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB). First, Sam runs through updates on the US public’s disapproval of Israel’s genocide, the US State Department, Texas’ fascist border power grab, labor action across the US, legal woes for Trump and Co., and Ronna McDaniel’s brief NBC tenure, before diving into details of the collision that collapsed Francis Scott Key in Baltimore, and the profiteering that drives disasters like this one. Professor Lisa Heinzerling then joins, diving right into the context of the Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine’s suit against the FDA, including their objections to the FDA’s relaxation of requirements for Mifepristone, the most common abortion medication in the US, and the overwhelming scientific evidence for the efficacy and safety of the drug. Expanding on this, Professor Heinzerling looks at this case within the broader context of the Supreme Court’s attack on the administrative state, fitting neatly into a pattern of cases with very vague and obscure claims of injury resulting in massive shakeups to the legal and political structure in the US, something also reflected in Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo, before walking through the greater idea of the Chevron Doctrine and administrative deference. After assessing where this current iteration of the Roberts Court stands among the most extreme activist courts, Lisa and Sam wrap up the interview with a brief conversation on the reaction of legal institutions and law schools to the myriad ongoing Supreme Court scandals. Nurse Heather Herbert and Sam then dive into the context of ONA’s ongoing labor action, with contract negotiations stalling for over a year as PeaceHealth attempted to force lower pay on some 125 hospice and home care workers, despite the same qualifications as hospital nurses with additionally extensive and expensive training required. After expanding on the serious hit this process took on these Nurses, Herbert dives into the hospice Nurses' difficult decision to strike, tackling the clear unfair labor practices exercised by PeaceHealth in response, and wrapping up with a conversation on the strike’s support from and impact on patients and community members.

Sam and Emma speak with Ingrid Robeyns, humanities professor at the Utrech University in The Netherlands, to discuss her recent book Limitarianism: The Case Against Extreme Wealth. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on the passage of a UNSC ceasefire resolution, Congress averting a government shutdown, the terror attack in Moscow, Mike Johnson’s speakership, Congress’ killing of an important internet subsidy, Donald Trump’s legal woes, Mifepristone, New Jersey’s senate race, and Ronna McDaniel’s NBC gig, before parsing through the details of the first UNSC ceasefire resolution not vetoed by the US. Professor Ingrid Robeyns then joins, diving right into the concept of “limitarianism” as a political belief that emphasizes the central importance of limiting wealth inequality and concentration in a functioning society, with the extreme stratification seen in the West (and particularly in the US) pushing severe social and political ills with little to no moral grounding. Expanding on the former, Professor Robeyns dives into the problems that arise in the relationship between money and politics under extreme inequality, with various factors, from campaign finance to political lobbying, giving a very wealthy few immense political power, before she, Sam, and Emma explore how extreme wealth concentration can give these same individuals the freedom to dictate social programs and overtake the public sphere to the detriment of everyone else, and the environment. After briefly touching on the particular role capitalism’s ills play within these issues, Ingrid walks Sam and Emma through the moral philosophical grounding of “limitarianism” as a refutation of modern society’s supposed meritocracy, bringing into question the role of the individual in coming out the victor of countless natural and social lotteries. Next, Professor Robeyns tackles the role of wealth inequality in creating an inequality division between capital and labor, allowing the former to dictate the rules of the latter, and parses through what solutions are needed – particularly in terms of welfare, social and housing programs, and unionization – to rebalance that dichotomy, before wrapping up the interview looking at the importance of taking fiscal action against tax havens and unregulated free trade, and why changing the public perception on wealth is so necessary in this battle.

It's another EmMajority Report Thursday! Emma speaks with John Washington, staff writer at Arizona Luminaria and contributor for The Intercept, to discuss his recent book The Case For Open Borders. Then, she's joined by Christoph N. Vogel, research director of the Insecure Livelihoods Project at Ghent University and author of the book Conflict Minerals, Inc.: War, Profit and White Saviourism in Eastern Congo, to discuss recent developments in the conflict involving the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Rwanda. First, Emma runs through updates on the US recent tiptoe toward calling for a ceasefire, Israel’s ongoing siege on Gaza, the major wins for the right in the upcoming government funding bill, Bernie and AOC’s new Green New Deal for housing, Trump’s financial woes, Julian Assange, the GOP’s Biden inquiry, the DOJ v. Apple, Bolsonaro’s falsified documents, and AMLO’s response to Texas, before parsing a little deeper through the makeup of Congress’ recent funding bill. John Washington then joins, parsing through the Democrats’ recent complete capitulation to Donald Trump’s far-right border militancy agenda, the common thread of this tactic by Democrats, and the absurdity of their rhetorical posturing alongside policy acquiescence, with a clear parallel in the politics of Mexico’s AMLO. Expanding on this, Washington and Emma tackle the political class’ commitment to the status quo on immigration, despite the relative recency (and ineffectiveness) of the shift toward closed, militarized borders, and how an argument for more humane and responsive immigration policy is still grounded in modern-day examples and is much more aligned with the rhetoric that much of the “progressive” west employs. John then dives into the economics of border militancy, with the increased precarity for migrants pushing them into more and more exploitative conditions and driving down wage and condition standards for citizens as well, with the globalization of exploitation alongside the restriction of the movement of people becoming cemented with the Free Trade Agreements of the neoliberal era. Wrapping up, Washington and Emma walk through the brutal ineffectiveness of border militancy, and what alternative visions to immigration could look like. Christoph Vogel then dives into the major problems with Western coverage of conflict in the Congo, largely employing a depoliticized, resource– and narrative-driven form of storytelling about issues with deeply political roots. After briefly touching on the role of Mobutu Sese Seko in Congolese relations to the West, Vogel walks through the three major periods of conflict in the recent history of the DRC, beginning with the rule and eventual overthrow of Mobutu in the ‘90s, the return of the DRC name under Laurent and then Joseph Kabila in the early 2000s (including the first democratic elections in 2006) during the Second Congo War, and finally the ongoing period of unstable and fracturing political and security environment, with countless militia and belligerent groups revolting and driving record displacement in the country. Expanding on the ongoing period of crisis, Vogel walks through the constant speculation and polemics around the data of the displacement and devastation by the main parties involved, and the relatively minor role resource extraction, particularly mining, has played in generating and maintaining these conflicts. Lastly, Chris Albright joins to discuss the devastating impact of last year’s environmental disaster in East Palestine, walking through the major impacts on the health of him and his community, and the lackluster response from Joe Biden and Ohio representatives, also touching on their ongoing attempt to hold the President and representatives accountable, and what those of us outside of East Palestine can do to support their cause.

And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Matt Binder and Brandon Sutton as they watch Karine Jean-Pierre’s callous response to a question about whether Biden will reach out to the Arab-American community, go full Freudo-Marxist on the right’s insane reaction to Kristen Stewart’s recent Rolling Stone cover, and talk with Spencer from Minnesota about the shows coverage of tort law and Johnson and Johnson’s crimes. They also parse through the abuse and exploitation of reality stars, with some help from Love is Blind’s Nick Thompson, plus, your calls and IMs!

It's Hump Day! Sam and Emma speak with Mark Joseph Stern, senior writer at Slate, to discuss the recent developments at the Supreme Court after new oral argument were read earlier this week. Then, they speak with Rebecca Burns, author and journalist based in Georgia, to discuss her recent piece in The American Prospect entitled "Against The Wind." First, they run through updates on yesterday’s primaries, Trump’s strong polling out of Georgia and North Carolina, Blinken’s most recent visit to the Middle East, Biden’s Israel policy, Congress’ budget, housing, and crime, before diving deep into Jared Kushner’s recent comments on the “valuable” “waterfront property” of Gaza that he recommends Israel capitalize on. Mark Joseph Stern then joins, diving right into the recent insane judicial debacle that has been the handling of Texas’ SB-4 – essentially declaring full control over immigration services – by the notoriously right-wing Fifth Circuit and the Supreme Court of the US, walking through the Fifth Circuit’s administrative stay on the decision in an attempt to prohibit SCOTUS from overturning it, and SCOTUS’ eventual decision to legally uphold the lower courts’ stay while also denouncing the further use of it, resulting in the Fifth Circuit reversing itself, with no real culmination to the issue. Next, they look at Murthy v. Missouri, an attempt by Missouri’s and Louisiana’s Attorneys General to abuse Missouri’s single-judge division by submitting a suit with major federal implications on the Government’s ability to converse with social media companies, before wrapping up with SCOTUS’ blanket disapproval of the case, and what it will mean for the future of single judge divisions. Rebecca Burns then walks Sam and Emma through the emergence of the anti-wind movement as a product of the climate-denial movement’s shift towards tactics of delay, successfully capitalizing on misinformation and the NIMBY movement to mobilize even progressive communities against wind-based renewable energy projects. Wrapping up, Burns parses through the evolution of this movement, coming to fruition in opposition to Biden’s climate agenda, the major misinformation that it has capitalized on, and how it has successfully worked to delay his major policy victories.

And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma walk through the major results from yesterday’s elections, including the Florida Democratic Party losing multiple mayorships in Democratic strongholds and the setup for Ohio’s senate race, before parsing through GOP candidate Bernardo Moreno’s recent statements dancing around his anti-reproductive rights platform, and what could be in store for the Senate if the GOP wins a majority in November. Donald Trump’s major financial penalties cause right-wing nutsos to panic, Lynn from California dives into the story of Nex Benedict and the state of trans wellbeing in the US, Randy from Virginia grapples with alienation and electoral politics, and Kowalski from Nebraska gives updates on agriculture and more. They also parse through the insane story of a GOP state senator’s sexual harassment on the floor of Nebraska’s unicameral legislature, plus, your calls and IMs!
