Thu, 11 Jun 2026 - 1h 15min - 1080 - F1's shock Red Bull/Mercedes engine ruling explained
In the latest episode of The Race F1 Podcast, we discuss the news that Red Bull has been declared Formula 1's best engine under the Additional Development and Upgrade Opportunities (ADUO) system, meaning that rivals Mercedes and Ferrari will both get engine upgrades during the 2026 season. Given the Mercedes power unit is considered the standard-setter and the Mercedes team has won every grand prix this year, the decision has understandably baffled a lot of people - so what exactly is going on? Edd Straw is joined by Mark Hughes and Scott Mitchell-Malm to unpick everything we know.
Edd, Mark and Scott also discuss the driving style problems George Russell referenced in Monaco, and ask whether he could see an upturn in his fortunes in Barcelona this weekend. There's also a host of listener questions to answer, with topics ranging from whether McLaren have a power unit issue brewing to whether Alex Albon should leave Williams for pastures new.

Wed, 10 Jun 2026 - 1h 00min - 1079 - Monaco GP Driver Rankings: Did we rank Verstappen correctly?
In the second instalment of our Driver Rankings podcast, Ben Anderson grills Edd Straw on how he ranked the drivers after the Monaco Grand Prix.
One driver's ranking proved particularly controversial to many people in The Race Members' Club - but does Edd agree that it's one of the boldest calls he's ever made?
Ben also challenges Edd on the rankings of Charles Leclerc and George Russell, gets Edd to explain how much penalties and driver luck feed into his decision making, and spotlights two drivers who he thinks could have been ranked very differently.
There's also a look at the updated driver rankings championship, with one driver in particular jumping several places up the order after Monaco.

Tue, 09 Jun 2026 - 41min - 1078 - Monaco GP: Antonelli dominates amid penalty mayhem and track chaos
From Monte Carlo, Jon Noble and Scott Mitchell-Malm join Edd Straw to discuss an intriguing Monaco Grand Prix that saw a runaway race winner, disappointment for the home fans, a slew of costly penalties, and concerns about the track surface - amongst other things...
Kimi Antonelli became the youngest-ever winner of the Monaco Grand Prix as pre-event favourite Ferrari floundered and title rival George Russell came away with nothing. But was there ever any chance of stopping the Italian? Edd, Jon and Scott tackle that question as well as discussing Lewis Hamilton's strong showing, miserable outings for Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen, podium heartbreak for Pierre Gasly and much more.

Sun, 07 Jun 2026 - 51min - 1077 - In-Car Insights: Jon and Scott debrief the first day of action in Monaco
As a special bonus, we're making the Thursday edition of our In-Car Insights podcast - usually only available to The Race Members' Club - free for everyone to listen to.
Full disclosure, this episode wasn't actually recorded in a car because in Monaco, Jon Noble and Scott Mitchell-Malm stay down the coast, and commute to the track via public transport. So instead, Jon and Scott recorded Friday's episode outside a kebab shop, as they waited for dinner (with Josh Suttill dutifully collecting food in the background).
Listen in as the guys debrief an extremely busy Friday in Monaco and look ahead to the all-important qualifying session and what's to come for the rest of the weekend...

Fri, 05 Jun 2026 - 22min - 1076 - Tech Show: Is the FIA right to ban active aero for Monaco?
The Monaco Grand Prix provides F1 drivers with a unique challenge, but they'll have one less thing to think about this year after the FIA decided that there will be no straight mode zones in the Principality, and hence no opportunity to use the active front and rear wings that are a feature of the 2026 regulations. Is that the right call? One man who doesn't think so is former F1 technical director Gary Anderson, who explains why to Edd Straw in the latest edition of The Race F1 Tech Show.
Edd and Gary also discuss the implementation of the 'Rev 1' engine map for this weekend, explaining what it is and why it's being used, plus there's a wider look at the unique engineering challenge that Monaco provides compared to other circuits.
And, as ever, we round off the episode with our listener questions section, in which Gary tackles questions on Ferrari's curious engine smoke, car ballast, the purpose of ADUO and limiting outwash.

Thu, 04 Jun 2026 - 1h 00min - 1075 - Why F1 teams are so convinced of an upset in Monaco
On the latest episode of The Race F1 Podcast, we discuss whether F1 2026 could be set for its first upset, with Ferrari hotly-tipped to set the pace in Monaco. But why are the Scuderia so fancied at this race, and if they are to set the pace, will it be track specialist and home favourite Charles Leclerc that leads the way or his resurgent team mate Lewis Hamilton?
Edd Straw is joined by Josh Suttill and Ben Anderson to discuss Ferrari's chances and who else might be in the fight for victory. They also discuss the rule changes that have been implemented for the Monaco weekend, explaining why the FIA has banned the use of active aero and how the energy deployment restrictions that have been imposed will impact racing.
Note: This podcast was recorded before news broke of Leclerc extending his Ferrari contract.

We ask what Toto Wolff’s version of ‘papaya rules’ should look like as he bids to keep battling Mercedes team-mates George Russel and Kimi Antonelli in line in the latest episode of The Race F1 Podcast.
Nelson Valkenburg and Scott Mitchell-Malm join Edd Straw to discuss the way the battle could and should be managed on track, and the risks of trying to keep too tight a leash on Antonelli and Russell.
We also take listener questions on Ferrari communications, Valtteri Bottas’s struggles, the driving style flexibility of the 2026 car and the chances of the field closing up at the front.

Mon, 01 Jun 2026 - 1h 06min - 1073 - Bring Back V10s: Why Benetton's post-Schumacher era was so rough
Bring Back V10s tackles one of F1's roughest title wins hangovers in episode 6 of season 13, with a look back at the sudden downturn in fortunes for one of the 1990s' elite teams.
Benetton was on top of the world at the end of 1995, having clinched the constructors’ crown and back-to-back drivers’ world titles with Michael Schumacher. But with Schumacher departing for Ferrari in 1996, the team had a new challenge to prove its success wasn’t just about the driver - and it didn't go very well...
Joining Glenn Freeman for a look back at Benetton’s turbulent post-Schumacher period are Matt Beer and Ben Anderson.
They discuss the logic behind choosing Jean Alesi and Gerhard Berger to lead Benetton's new era, how quickly things got fractious behind the scenes and whether this decline was always inevitable no matter who Benetton picked for its life after Schumacher.

Thu, 28 May 2026 - 1h 14min - 1072 - What major new deal says about Alpine’s chances of becoming an F1 force again
Alpine announced a major new sponsorship deal on Wednesday, with Italian fashion house Gucci to enter Formula 1 for the first time next year as the team's title sponsor. Jon Noble, who was at the launch event in Paris, joins Edd Straw to explain why this deal is so significant for Alpine (and parent company Renault) outside of the obvious money it will bring.
Edd and Jon also discuss Alpine's wider progress this season, as the former world championship winning team - under the leadership of Flavio Briatore - continues its steady rise back up the grid after its rock bottom finish in the constructors' standings in 2025. And finally, Jon explains what impact the new deal might have on the team's driver line-up of Pierre Gasly and Franco Colapinto going forward, as Briatore looks to make another fashion brand a serial F1 winner, after his previous success with Benetton.

On the latest episode of The Undercut, Damon Hill and Mark Hughes explore the complex relationship that F1 has with automotive manufacturers - a relationship that many would argue is to blame for the knot that the sport has put itself in with the 2026 regulations. With another big manufacturer - Chinese car giant BYD - exploring joining the grid, is it time for F1 to de-couple itself from the 'myth' that road relevancy was every really an important aspect of the sport? With Max Verstappen’s future still up in the air, can Red Bull Racing 2.0 really can convince him it’s the place to be in the short and long-term? And what might the team do should it be necessary to replace the Dutchman in 2027 or the years that follow? Edd Straw is joined by Jon Noble and special guest Matt Majendie - author of the new book Inside Red Bull Racing - to debate those questions, and ask whether the new-look Red Bull (devoid of championship-winning stalwarts like Christian Horner, Helmut Marko, Adrian Newey and more) still has what it takes to be F1’s standard-setter.

Edd and Gary also discuss some of the latest tech developments seen in F1, including a clever exploitation at the rear of the Red Bull's sidepod - or technically the floor - that has gone straight onto Gary's 'dubious list'.

Sat, 16 May 2026 - 57min - 1063 - Bring Back V10s: Turkey 2010 - The dramatic fallout from big Vettel/Webber clash
Bring Back V10s drops a couple of cylinders to look back at a famous race from the V8 era: the 2010 Turkish Grand Prix. Glenn Freeman is joined by Edd Straw and Jon Noble, who were both at Istanbul Park that weekend, to look back on a race most famous for Red Bull team-mates Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber wiping each other out while battling for the lead!
As well as analysing the incident we look back on how everyone involved handled it, and why Red Bull couldn't get the situation under control after the race.
McLaren also had a misunderstanding of its own that almost resulted in Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button repeating the Red Bull trick on their way to a 1-2 finish, featuring some pretty animated radio traffic from Hamilton.
Off-track we look back on how Robert Kubica was settling in at Renault, the struggles for the new teams on the grid in 2010, Michelin's late bid to derail Pirelli's 2011 F1 deal, Mercedes' underwhelming start to life as a team owner, and why things looked so bleak for Ferrari at this stage of the season.

Thu, 14 May 2026 - 1h 28min - 1062 - How Toyota is helping transform F1’s smallest team
Haas is Formula 1’s smallest team, but its Toyota partnership is playing a big part in helping it to continue to overachieve.
Scott Mitchell-Malm, who paid a visit to its Banbury facility between the Japanese and Miami Grands Prix, and Edd Straw, who recently attended a Haas TPC (testing of previous cars) test at Silverstone, get together to tell the story of this unique team.
We look at the Toyota deal and how it has led to the creation of the TPC programme, the ongoing driver-in-loop simulator build project and also production enhancements for the team. We also hear from Toyota project manager Pierre Genon, who is tasked with overseeing the way the two companies work together and reveals what’s happened, and what is to come, for this partnership.
There’s also a look at the future, asking whether one day this could be a Toyota works team, if a sale is possible and also how far owner Gene Haas might be willing to go with it.

It's a fascinating discussion where you'll hear Zak discuss his journey before and during his time in F1 in great detail, and it will give you an insight into the way he operates at McLaren, and how he has helped turn around a team that even he admits was "a mess" when he got there.

Thu, 16 Apr 2026 - 1h 10min - 1046 - Bring Back V10s: Spain 1994 - F1 in crisis, Schumacher's heroics and Hill's emotional win
Bring Back V10s dives into the chaos of May and June 1994 as we look back on that year's Spanish Grand Prix, which came just a month after the tragedies of Imola.
With the world still reeling from the loss of Ayrton Senna and Roland Ratzenberger, F1 found itself under fire following further heavy accidents for Pedro Lamy in testing and Karl Wendlinger in Monaco.
Glenn Freeman, Edd Straw and Ben Anderson look at how F1's political landscape exploded during this period, with FIA president Max Mosley seeing an opportunity to force through change, which caused a backlash in some parts of the paddock.
We explore how that spread into the Barcelona weekend, with several teams boycotting first practice, and drivers forcing a terrible chicane made of tyres to be installed on the track.
The weekend also marked David Coulthard's F1 debut as talk of Nigel Mansell returning to Williams dominated the headlines, while Michael Schumacher put in one of his most famous drives to finish second while stuck in fifth gear.
Ahead of Schumacher, Damon Hill claimed a much-needed first win of the season for Williams, which prompted a huge outpouring of emotion within the team after what had been a horrible few weeks for everyone who worked there.

Jaguar's terrible first F1 season in 2000 is the subject of episode two of season 13 of Bring Back V10s. The impressive start made by the Red Bull Powertrains engine, and how Racing Bulls appears to be struggling to make the most of it is also tackled, along with the form of fellow newcomer Audi. Mon, 16 Feb 2026 - 46min - 1016 - When does clever thinking become cheating? - The Undercut with Damon Hill and Mark Hughes
People in F1 have long talked about finding ‘the unfair advantage’, but sometimes the line between clever thinking and outright cheating is not easy to see - as Damon Hill and Mark Hughes discuss on the latest episode of The Undercut.
The engine compression saga that’s engulfed F1 ahead of the 2026 season is the latest scenario where a team looks to have found a loophole in the F1 regulations - but should Mercedes be congratulated for what is undoubtedly clever engineering or should the FIA always look to curb any advantage that could be said to go against the spirit of the regulations?
Mark and Damon discuss this and other 'grey area' scenarios in what is a typically wide-ranging and free-flowing conversation.

The Mercedes pair of Kimi Antonelli and George Russell ended up with a one-two on the timesheets at the end of the Bahrain test. But with the top teams falling over themselves to declare each other the frontrunner, who is really on top at the conclusion of three days of running? And how seriously should F1 take Andrea Stella’s safety warnings? Edd Straw is joined by Scott Mitchell-Malm and Jon Noble to discuss both of those questions, and reflect on three days of running that left us with as many questions as answers.

Day 2 of F1 testing in Bahrain was dominated by Max Verstappen’s comments about the 2026 regulations - but what’s prompted him to call them “not very Formula 1-like", "anti-racing" and more like "Formula E on steroids”? Dutch F1 commentator Nelson Valkenburg, of Viaplay Netherlands, joins Edd Straw to give his verdict on Max’s comments, and talk through all the rest of the big stories from the day, including Ferrari’s pace and Mercedes’ struggles.
Also in this episode, Scott Mitchell-Malm reports back on Aston Martin’s progress after Lance Stroll claimed the team’s new car was up to four and a half seconds off the leading teams, and Jon Noble checks in to discuss the story he broke on Thursday about a potential change to the F1 start procedure that was blocked by Ferrari.

Jon Noble was in Saudi Arabia for the Aston launch, and he tells Edd Straw what he learned and why some of the language coming from the likes of Adrian Newey and Fernando Alonso suggests the team won't be at the sharp end of the grid in 2026 - at least to begin with.

They share some weird and wacky stories from their own careers, including the time Damon was almost sacked during a car launch and the time Johnny inadvertently found himself part of a space opera! Sat, 07 Feb 2026 - 54min - 1009 - What testing tells us about how F1 racing will change in 2026
F1 has all-new cars in 2026, but how will they change the racing we see on track? That's the big question tackled in this episode of The Race F1 Podcast, as Edd Straw, Scott-Mitchell-Malm and Dutch F1 commentator Nelson Valkenburg, of Viaplay Netherlands, attempt to unpick what we've learned from the limited driver and team feedback we've heard so far.
How big is the driving challenge, and has it gone too far in the direction of energy management over pure driving? And will one type of driver excel compared to another?
Those are some of the topics tackled, before talk turns to the latest on Williams' delayed start to 2026, what to make of the latest comments from Adrian Newey about Aston Martin starting four months behind the curve, and why Jack Doohan has landed a role as Haas reserve driver.

Thu, 05 Feb 2026 - 59min - 1008 - The key tech trends of F1's 2026 cars
Now that almost all of the 2026 cars have broken cover, we take an in-depth look at the technical and design trends that have stood out so far in the latest edition of The Race F1 Podcast. Ex-F1 technical director Gary Anderson and Mark Hughes join Edd Straw to work through the key areas and explain the various design choices taken by teams.
We take a close look at the approach to active aero, in particular the choices made by teams like Mercedes only to adjust one element of the front wing. The sidepod designs and bargeboard details at the front of the floor are also delved into, as a well as a look at the bold suspension geometries chosen by teams - particularly Aston Martin. We also ask why the Racing Bulls airbox intake is so massive, and what the reason is for the slots in at the back of the floor leading into the diffuser on some cars.
Finally, we pick out the best and worst performers from testing, and nominate the most interesting, and most concerning, of the 2026 cars.

F1’s first group test of 2026 got underway in Barcelona on Monday in a strange locked down environment, completely free of media and fans. The Race’s Edd Straw and Jon Noble were amongst a handful of hardy journalists who spent the day trying to observe from a distance while evading over zealous security guards, and on this episode of The Race F1 Podcast they report back on what they found.
They discuss which teams ran (and which didn’t), who lapped the most, and who set the benchmark time, and also share their initial thoughts on what the new cars look and sound like on track. On Thursday it was the turn of Mercedes to release the first images of its 2026 F1 car, the W17. From an airport bar, Edd Straw is joined by Jon Noble to discuss that topic, before talk turns to McLaren. The world champion team has announced that it will miss day 1 of the private test in Barcelona as part of a wider plan on upgrades that seem to run counter to what its rivals are doing. Sat, 17 Jan 2026 - 1h 24min - 997 - Red Bull and Verstappen kick-off F1 launch season - but what did we learn?
Red Bull kicked off F1’s launch season with a flashy event in Detroit, revealing a glossy revised livery and giving us some hints about expectations for 2026. But what did we learn about the hopes for its new power unit and how big Ford’s involvement really is? And did Max Verstappen give anything away about how he's feeling heading into what's likely to be a crucial year for his future?
Edd Straw is joined by Jon Noble to discuss all of this and more, plus reflect on the much more low-key launch of Racing Bulls' 2026 season. With the junior team given less than 15 minutes in the spotlight during the launch event, is it a case of 'Scuderia Afterthought', or will the Italian-based outfit kick-on and become more than a 'talent incubator' for the main squad?

Wed, 14 Jan 2026 - 1h 04min - 995 - BONUS: Indycar at war! Ep. 2 - The nightmare attempt to rival the Indy 500
While the F1 world is a little quieter, we’re dropping a special three-part series into the feed as a winter bonus, all about the barely believable story of how Indycar racing was torn apart in the mid-90s.
Episode 2 deals with CART's US 500 nightmare as it attempted to go head-to-head with the first 'IRL' Indy 500 in 1996. Glenn Freeman, Edd Straw and John Oreovicz then look back on CART's strength in the late-1990s, and the IRL's struggles to become established. Then at the turn of the century, Chip Ganassi Racing became the first big hitter from CART to go back to Indianapolis, starting a gradual shift of more teams crossing the divide each May, which eventually led to the first big full-time defection to the IRL.
We hope you enjoy this little sideways step into another area of motorsport, but if it’s not for you, fear not we’ll be back with more F1 coverage very soon.

While the F1 world is a little quieter, we’re dropping a special three-part series into the feed as a winter bonus. As you might have guessed from the title, it's not about Formula 1, but we think it’s such an incredible tale that many of you will enjoy it, and possibly even be amazed by it. It features our very own Edd Straw, alongside host Glenn Freeman and US racing expert John Oreovicz, and it tells the barely believable story of how Indycar racing was torn apart in the mid-90s, shortly after Nigel Mansell had helped make the North American series so popular that Bernie Ecclestone saw it as a threat to F1.
Episode 1 deals with the immediate aftermath of Indianapolis Motor Speedway boss Tony George announcing, in early 1994, that he would be forming his own competitor to the hugely popular CART Indycar series. Mon, 22 Dec 2025 - 56min - 988 - And Colossally That's History: The tragic coronations of America's only F1 champions
For the season finale of And Colossally That's History, Matt and Richard tell the twin stories of Phil Hill and Mario Andretti; two American drivers who couldn't have been more different, but who'll be forever linked by the eerily similar, eerily tragic similarities between their crowning moments.
There were 17 years between Phil Hill becoming America’s first F1 world champion at Monza in 1961 and Mario Andretti being crowned the second - also at Monza - in 1978. But rather than being able to celebrate their triumphs unconditionally, both men's title success was overshadowed by their team-mate being involved in a fatal crash in the very same race.
Matt and Richard trace the very different paths that Hill and Andretti took to the top of world motorsport, before identifying the similarities in their stories, including how both found themselves in the most dominant car in their respective title winning seasons, and how both were paired alongside fast and flamboyant team-mates, Wolfgang von Trips (in Hill's case) and Ronnie Peterson (in Andretti's).
The events of the climactic Monza weekends are also discussed at length, as well as how America's pair of F1 champions dealt with the aftermath of such tragedies.

We explain why the world champion isn’t the obvious choice as number one, why it was so tight in terms of picking between the leading midfielders and how we went about factoring in experience levels. There’s also a look at the leading drivers who missed out on our list, including Ferrari disappointment Lewis Hamilton.
To add another perspective, we also look at how our ranking differs from that voted for by The Race Members’ Club.

Mon, 15 Dec 2025 - 1h 29min - 985 - Tech Show: What can teams learn by running 2026 tyres on mule cars?
On the latest episode of The Race F1 Tech Show, Edd Straw and Gary Anderson discuss the unusual taste of 2026 we got with the tyre-test running in Abu Dhabi after the grand prix. That was done using the definitive 2026 Pirelli tyres, but with 'mule cars' adapted to replicate downforce levels, so how useful - or not - will that running have been? Edd and Gary discuss.
Gary also answers questions from listeners about whether teams should be able to develop their own tyres, whether a return to simplified aero would solve F1's dirty air issue, and on the fine margins used to control plank wear. Plus, Edd and Gary discuss Williams' progress this season, with Atlassian's customer CTO Andrew Boyagi joining to explain the company's role in Williams' step forward.

Fri, 12 Dec 2025 - 50min - 984 - And Colossally That's History: 20+ hours at the wheel - 6 crazy Le Mans drives
As we near the end of another marathon year of motor racing, our history podcast And Colossally That's History thought it was the perfect time to reminisce about marathon performances at motor racing’s most celebrated test of endurance, the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
Over the course of the episode, Matt and Richard tell the tales of six drivers who spent at least 20 hours (and in one case all 24 hours!) at the wheel during a single 24-hour race.
As you might expect, there are some astonishing stories to be told about how they did it, including the driver who fixed his car with chewing gum, the driver who did nearly the whole race on a diet of oranges, the driver who almost single-handedly put the new Ferrari marque on the map, and the driver who found a novel way to take his, ahem, ‘bathroom breaks’ without anyone noticing…

Fri, 12 Dec 2025 - 58min - 983 - Why Marko’s out of Red Bull + What happened in the Abu Dhabi test
Edd Straw and Scott Mitchell-Malm reconvene in a much quieter Abu Dhabi to discuss the news that Helmut Marko will leave Red Bull at the end of 2025, ending a run of more than 20 years as the Formula 1 team’s motorsport advisor. But why is Marko out now, and what does this mean for Red Bull Racing - and Max Verstappen - going forward?
Edd and Scott also unpick everything that happened in the post-race Abu Dhabi test, which effectively saw two tests running in tandem, with each team having one 2025-spec car for young driver testing and one so-called 'mule' car for 2026 tyre testing.
