- 27 - Episode 26 - 'Dancing With Our Demons'
We’re baaaack! Last episode I mentioned that I would be taking a little break as I moved to a new apartment and got my studio set back up. I was imagining that it would be maybe the months of June and July of 2022. But life found a way to keep us apart. But in July 2023, I recorded this episode and it took me until today to release it. So I’ve been sitting with this episode’s song for months and I’ve been SO READY to get back on the BS Train. In this episode, I was inspired by the work of Artist/Author Yumi Sakugawa. Specifically a particular passage from the book "Your Illustrated Guide to Becoming One with the Universe", in the section titled, "We are not just Light, We are not just Darkness, We are Everything": 'So let us get to know our darkness, our demons that exist in the dark shadows of our minds, the aspects of ourselves we feel most ashamed of. Invite your demon for a slice of cake and a cup of tea. It might feel awkward and uncomfortable at first. Allow the demon to say what it feels like saying, feel what it feels like feeling, think what it feels like thinking. Simply observe and listen with a gentle intention to understand where your demon is coming from. Let the demon say what it wants to say…and then ask your demon to come back another time for more cake and tea. Schedule regular tea and cake dates with your demons Sometimes your demon will give you something in return for your understanding and kindness, something you can only receive for having the courage to face your darkness. A jewel, a beautiful idea, a key to a secret place… And after a while you may realize that for this whole time your demon was afraid of you and was waiting for you this entire time For your love, compassion, and time. Your assignment from the Universe: Prepare different cake and tea combinations for your different demons. Once you have gotten to know a good majority of your demons, organize a Dance Party.' @yumisakugawa @50badsongs @timrosko www.patreon.com/50badsongs www.50badsongs.bandcamp.com
Sat, 09 Mar 2024 - 44min - 26 - Episode 25 - 'Wings'
We've made it to the halfway point! This is the 25th episode and the 25th song. It's hard to believe we’ve written so many songs! Thank you for listening to our songs and for sticking with us up to this point. This project has been a huge part of my life these last several years and I am so grateful for the opportunity to get to make music and share it with all of you! In this episode we talk about writing a song like a story about a character instead of like a diary entry or therapy session. We also touch on the topic of the delicate timeline of writing and releasing songs. In the end we write a lovely little jazzy waltz about a girl who is decides to turn her fears into wings. Using a songwriting prompt from Sarah Spencer's Five-In-Five Challenge at SongFancy, this song came together from this prompt: "She Had to Turn Her Fears Into Wings" To learn more about SongFancy and the Five-In-Five Challenge, go to http://songfancy.com/5-in-5-songwriting-challenge/ @50badsongs @timrosko www.patreon.com/50badsongs www.50badsongs.bandcamp.com
Tue, 24 May 2022 - 46min - 25 - Episode 24 - 'Rest'
We’ve made it to April which means I’m coming up on the 1 year anniversary of moving to LA! A lot has happened in the last year–-a lot of good, a lot of not so good…Either way, something that I have come to appreciate more this year is Rest and that is the theme for today’s episode. We spend some time talking about the importance of Rest in today's hyper-productive, hustle-culture society and write a deliciously pop-inspired song about going to bed! Using a songwriting prompt from Sarah Spencer's Five-In-Five Challenge at SongFancy, this song came together from this prompt: "Write about a sacred place you know well" To learn more about SongFancy and the Five-In-Five Challenge, go to http://songfancy.com/5-in-5-songwriting-challenge/ @50badsongs @timrosko www.patreon.com/50badsongs www.50badsongs.bandcamp.com
Thu, 07 Apr 2022 - 54min - 24 - Episode 23 - 'Next To You'
It is March and we are marching our way towards Spring. The weather here in LA has been ALL over the place – from the 80s to the 30s. I was originally going to do another wintry song this episode, but I changed course because it was already so warm and it didn’t feel right to do 3 wintry songs in a row! SO I chose the song you are going to hear today which is a totally different vibe. It still has a cozy feel, for those of you in parts of the country that are still chilly, but it’s a different inspiration and a very different direction. We discuss the beauty of a quiet morning and write a little song romanticizing the peace and magic in the mundane. Using a songwriting prompt from Sarah Spencer's Five-In-Five Challenge at SongFancy, this song came together from this list of words: "Early, Crinkle, Sip, Elaborate, Crease, Paper, Can’t, Gold, Thoughtful, Tear" To learn more about SongFancy and the Five-In-Five Challenge, go to http://songfancy.com/5-in-5-songwriting-challenge/ @50badsongs @timrosko www.patreon.com/50badsongs www.50badsongs.bandcamp.com
Mon, 07 Mar 2022 - 54min - 23 - Episode 22 - 'Stay In'
We are starting this year off STRONG!-- Episode two, in month two of 2022!~~ AND this is song #22 out of 50. The schedule moving forward for this year will be new episodes on the first Monday of the month, unlike last season which was on the 1st of the month. In this episode, Tim writes a golden-era instant classic that is also the introvert’s anthem about NOT going out and instead, staying in with you. Using a songwriting prompt from Sarah Spencer's Five-In-Five Challenge at SongFancy, this song came together from this concept: ”She started peeling back the layers and wished she could put them right back.” To learn more about SongFancy and the Five-In-Five Challenge, go to http://songfancy.com/5-in-5-songwriting-challenge/ @50badsongs @timrosko www.patreon.com/50badsongs www.50badsongs.bandcamp.com
Mon, 07 Feb 2022 - 44min - 22 - Episode 21 - 'Green, Red, & Gold'
Welcome back to 50 Bad Songs! This is the Season 3 premiere, episode 21, "Green, Red, and Gold". With Season 3, we are moving forward with a new format to the episodes. Instead of recording the full songwriting process and editing it down to be listenable, we will take a retrospective look at the details of how the music, lyrics, and production all came together. You will hear the song at the top of the episode and again at the end. In this episode, Tim writes a Christmas song that is not actually a Christmas song. Using a songwriting prompt from Sarah Spencer's Five-In-Five Challenge at SongFancy, this song came together from this list of ten words: Cedar, Approach, Minute, Turn, Waiting, Twilight, Clear, Wool, Hands, and Warm. Mon, 03 Jan 2022 - 55min - 21 - Episode 20 - 'Step Aside' with Greg Breal
Truly, this year has gone by so slow and somehow so fast. I cannot believe we are here in November, like what even is time. This episode is going to be the Season Finale for Season 2. In this month’s episode, I spend some time talking and writing with singer, songwriter and vocal coach, Greg Breal. Greg is a dear friend of mine with a tender heart and a voice like butter. Greg and I have a delightful conversation about singing and the voice and the self-doubt that can get in the way. We stretch ourselves to write a really cool song that’s unlike most of the songs I’ve written so far. Greg also helped me produce this demo, much like our guest in episode 13 Colby Lapolla. I hope you enjoy this episode! @keepinitbreal @50badsongs @timrosko www.patreon.com/50badsongs
Mon, 02 Nov 2020 - 1h 40min - 20 - Episode 19 - 'Halted State'
Unbelievably, it is October and we have officially reached autumn in 2020. The weather in Nashville has been gracious enough to actually reflect the season and that is something worth celebrating. Tim approaches this episode a little differently than previous episodes. He is writing alone and is exclusively using his ukulele! Unheard of! Tim talks about how he is feeling stalled out and like everything has come to a halt in his life and the world, but he writes a nice little tune anyways. I think you'll enjoy it. As always, reach out to us and let us know what you think! @50badsongs @timrosko www.patreon.com/50badsongs
Thu, 01 Oct 2020 - 59min - 19 - Episode 18 - 'Doing the Best I Can' with Natalie Royal
And in the blink of an eye, it’s September. As we’ve established, time is an illusion this year and somehow we are nearing Autumn. BUT your favorite podcast carries on anyways! As things are still uncertain in the world, things are still complicated with recording with guests. But as you will hear in this episode, we are starting to figure out new and different ways of recording with guests. We may even get to record in person again soon, but in the meantime, we press forward. This month’s guest is another friend of mine and local singer and songwriter, Natalie Royal. Natalie is a wonderful person with a lovely voice and a beautiful heart, as you will soon hear. We recorded this episode back in May, you know, back when we thought we'd be out of quarantine in the Summer. But in spite of that, Natalie and I had several truly wonderful conversations about life, quarantine, and creativity. I know I say this every month, but the song we write together is my favorite song that we've written so far on this podcast! I think you'll enjoy it too. But of course, let me know what you think! @natalieroyalmusic @50badsongs @timrosko www.patreon.com/50badsongs
Tue, 01 Sep 2020 - 1h 53min - 18 - Episode 17 - 'Keep the Fire Alive'
Hii here we are in August, how the heck? When did? 2020?? What’s happening. As you may have noticed, we took last month off. In truth, I had another episode recorded but was having technical issues and I recorded this episode at the last minute. I didn’t give myself enough time to record this song to the quality level I wanted, so instead I didn’t release it and took this last month to record it right! I think we all were hoping that we’d be out of quarantine at this point, but alas, things are still complicated with recording with guests. I am still working on recording a guest remotely, but no matter what there will continue to be episodes! This month’s episode is me by my lonesome again. BUT I talk about a subject that I think a lot of people are experiencing right now given the state of the world at large. We are all experiencing difficulties right now and the frustrations can become overwhelming--to the point of losing all motivation to connect and live. We’ll get into it more in the episode and eventually, write a song about it! @50badsongs @timrosko www.patreon.com/50badsongs
Sun, 02 Aug 2020 - 1h 26min - 17 - Episode 16 - 'Prayer of Protest'
Another month has gone by and another episode is here. This episode is slightly different from how we usually do things. I had a different episode lined up, but given the events of the past week and the protests and rebellions that followed,I felt compelled to release something different. It didn’t feel right to release just another episode without addressing things. I decided that I would let the music pour out of me and not worry about lyrics, so this episode is shorter than usual. But I think the resulting song truly expresses what's in my heart. This is my prayer of protest. @50badsongs @timrosko www.patreon.com/50badsongs
Mon, 01 Jun 2020 - 18min - 16 - Episode 15 - 'North Star'
Hello hello! Somehow it is the end of April? Anyone else feel like March was eternal and April came and went in the blink of an eye?? We’re still in the throes of the coronavirus pandemic, so there’s not too much to report. This month’s episode is just me by my lonesome. I was unable to find a guest who could record remotely, so it’s just me and my musings. BUT I hope you don’t change that dial (???) because I dive deep into my thoughts and explore my experience of spending so much time alone and end up writing one of my favorite songs yet! @50badsongs @timrosko www.patreon.com/50badsongs
Fri, 01 May 2020 - 1h 20min - 15 - Episode 14 - 'Lil Bug' with Rochelle Riser
Hi everybody, March is finally over and hoo boy, it’s been a doozy of a month for Nashville, for our country, and the world at large. This month’s guest is another friend of mine from college, Rochelle Riser. Rochelle is a singer and songwriter here in Nashville, TN. She is a lovely human with a beautiful voice and a delightful personality, as you will soon hear. Rochelle plays the guitar (very well I might add), which means this is the first episode on this show that you will hear with a guitar! We end up writing a delightful little folk/americana song that sounds fit for a Pixar movie. Call us Pixar! @RochelleRiser @50badsongs @timrosko www.patreon.com/50badsongs
Wed, 01 Apr 2020 - 1h 17min - 14 - Episode 13 - 'Lion' with Colby Lapolla
It’s Leap Day today which means we have a whole extra day to play with! I did NOT spend all day inside, editing this episode, that’s for sure! Artist, Songwriter, and Vocal Producer Colby Lapolla joins Tim in the Bad Songs Studio (aka Tim’s house) and they dive deep into Colby’s journey with music and facing your fears. We approached writing the song a little differently than usual opting to start developing the track as we were writing the lyrics, so you will hear it go through MANY iterations before we land on the final song. BUT the final song is very cool and VERY different from anything we’ve ever written on this show. It sounds like something you might hear on the WB before your favorite prime-time drama. ANYways, I hope you enjoy it and as always, let us know what you think! New episodes on the 1st of every month! Stay tuned! @ColbyLapolla @50badsongs @timrosko www.patreon.com/50badsongs
Sun, 01 Mar 2020 - 1h 24min - 13 - Episode 12 - 'Doing This For Me' with Francesca Scalici
Episode 12 of your favorite podcast is here! In this episode, I meet up with my older sister Francesca Scalici while I am home in Birmingham, AL for Thanksgiving. We talk about the holidays and our shared childhood experiences while sitting around the piano that we both took lessons on in our youth. The song we write is rightly centered around that old Kohler & Campbell upright. In the end, we came up with a down-home sounding song that I think you will certainly enjoy. But of course, let us know what YOU think! New episodes will come out every month on the 1st of the month. So stay tuned! www.patreon.com/50badsongs @50badsongs @timrosko
Sat, 01 Feb 2020 - 1h 18min - 12 - Episode 11 - 'Everything Will Be'
Here we are in the FUTURE! Welcome to 2020 and welcome to Season 2 of your favorite songwriting podcast, 50 Bad Songs! In this episode we ring in the new year by talking about the creative process and being able to let go of something you have created and move on. SPOILER ALERT: it’s not easy. Neither is working alone. BUT we struggle through and make it out the other side with a new song in tow. The song actually turns out real nice and I think you will enjoy it too! As always, let us know what YOU think! Thank you to everyone who has stuck with us through the great 2019 hiatus. As you will hear, we encountered some difficulties and the podcast has undergone some changes in the last year, BUT we are not letting challenges and difficult times hold us back and we are moving forward anyways! New episodes will come out every month on the 1st of the month. So stay tuned! www.patreon.com/50badsongs @50badsongs @timrosko

Tim and Anna are back at it again! In this episode, they start the conversation off by talking about time capsules. They talk further about television shows and tamagotchi, but they just can't seem to get away from them idea of time capsules... Let's just say, things get real schmaltzy real quick.

In this episode, Anna and Tim are joined by musical friends and musical married couple Nick and Emily Tiberi. They tell us a bit about themselves and their history with music and songwriting and singing, Anna tells us about a one-time theater experience, and surprise, our SD card was full! But before we realized that, we did end up writing a beautifully sad song about leaving and moving on to something new. The song we wrote in this episode is one of my favorites so far and I hope you will enjoy it as well. Let us know what you think! --- @50badsongs @timrosko @thecstandsfor
Tue, 05 Jun 2018 - 50min - 6 - Episode 6 - 'Slap Happy' w/ Anna C
Tim and Anna are back at it again! This week they discuss #FOMO, missing movies debuts, and the reasons why they don't go out to concerts, among other things. The song they write is sassy, punchy, and spunky. And honestly, it's #relatable, amiright?!? Let us know what you think! @50badsongs @timrosko @thecstandsfor
Tue, 01 May 2018 - 1h 07min - 5 - Episode 5 - 'Still Growing' w/ Anna-Marie Settine
Tim's on the road and chats with his best friend Anna-Marie Settine in Nashville, TN. They discuss growing up, keeping living things alive, and being a #DogMom. Sadly, the song does not end up being Celine Dion's next big hit, but it does end up sounding pretty cool, if I do say so myself! Hope you enjoy!
Mon, 09 Apr 2018 - 1h 09min - 4 - Episode 4 - 'Home'
Disclaimer! The first half of this episode was recovered from a formerly lost file and it suffered some quality loss as a result! Tim and Anna decided to try to keep things tight and concise this episode! Despite struggling with the batteries of a portable recording device, they managed to chat some about Home, Daylight Savings Time, and Mister Rogers. The end result is a beautifully sweet and sincere song about home. Hope you enjoy!
Fri, 23 Mar 2018 - 1h 01min - 3 - Episode 3 - 'Reflections' w/ Anna C Reilly
Episode 3 is here! In this episode, Anna and I talk about Valentine's Day (because yes, that was when we recorded this...) as well as the various sports and activities we participated in during childhood. Somehow that conversation led to what can only be described as "1998's Top Dance Hall Hit". Get your ears, hearts, and dancing shoes ready.
Mon, 05 Mar 2018 - 1h 40min - 2 - Episode 2 - 'One Hundred Percent' w/ Anna C Reilly
We did it! We made a second episode! Or maybe we made the the first 'real' episode? Who can say for sure. But either way, do y'all know what this means? It means that this is a real podcast now and you can't stop it! And now we have to keep making new episodes... O_O On today's episode, we welcome my friend Anna C Reilly. She is a web content creator and improviser and my new co-host! Surprise. This was the plan all along. Anyways, she and I talk about the work week, our perfect weekend day, and how to balance our creative lives with our working lives. Eventually we write a song (with a surprising and inspiring twist towards the end) and I think you're gonna love the end result! Hope you enjoy!
