- 332 - One-Hit Wonders
The whole gang is back this week. When you think of one-hit wonders, which artists do you think of? What makes the songs you think of a "hit?" Where does the "one-hit" part of "one-hit wonder" come from? The Kousins discuss those very questions. Okay, let's face it, Kousin Tim tries to school people because that's what he does. He's a know-it-all. But maybe he thinks he's a know-it-mostly kind of guy? Who knows? It's really just a fun topic and suggestion.
All four Kousins give their "Now Listenings."
There are calls from Jem From Alabama, Bruno from Sunny South Africa, Jim From Irwin, and an old-school call from "Roadie Ray."
What constitutes a hit to you? Who are your favorite one-hit wonders?

Kousin Ray was on assignment this week. But, the original "OG" Kousins, Tim, Gary, and Marvin held a listening party for Great White's 1987 album, Once Bitten. It was an important time for the band. While they had been around for a bit, they didn't have much breakout success until this album. The album is known for "Lady Red Light," "Rock Me," and "Save Your Love." The latter is NOT the same as the KISS song of the same name from Dynasty. Which Kousins liked it? Did any not like it?
The three Kousins gave their "Now Listenings."
Calls from Jem From Alabama, Jim From Irwin, Bruno From South Africa, and Nick Provenzano of the West Coast Provenzanos. And a text from Carlos.
What are your thoughts on Once Bitten? Do you have a favorite song or memory about the album?

This podcast was recorded in the Omniverus Studios at Liberty Plaza and recorded via Zoom, sponsored by Top Leaf Cigar Lounge.Fri, 03 May 2024 - 1h 43min - 330 - The Warrant List
The Kousins run through the Top 10 (or 13, actually) Warrant songs as compiled by each Kousin making their own Top 10 list. This means that Kousin Tim has his top 10 Warrant songs list. Kousin Marvin does, and so do Kousin Gary and Kousin Ray. Then each position is given a score based on where (if) it shows up on a Kousin's list. Plug that into a little program, and it spits out the collective. Then we play them. Easy peasy, George and Weezy!
Each Kousin gave their "Now Listenings."
Calls from Jem From Alabama and Jim From Irwin.

Another topic was coming up for this episode until Kousin Tim talked about this event on Camel City Radio, and Kousin Marvin brought it up to the Kousin Kollective. Today (as of the recording) is April 18, 2024. On April 18, 1987, the very first episode of MTV's breakthrough program, Headbangers Ball, made its debut. The show was without a dedicated host; instead, it used established hard rock and "metal" artists as guest VJs. For that first episode, it was Lemmy and Philthy Animal from Motörhead. The Kousins ran down the tracklisting for that night with just a couple of detours (either because the songs were hard to find or fighting with licensing).
All four Kousins gave their "Now Listenings."
Calls from Jem From Alabama, Bruno From Sunny South Africa, and Eugene B Sims of Wheeler's Dog Podcast.

Back in November, before the big switch from a KISS-focused podcast to a hard rock-focused podcast, the Kousins rated all the KISS albums like marks in school. The four Kousins graded from A+ through F-. You can hear those episodes here and here. Fast-forward to February, when the Kousins did a retrospective of music from 1983, which focused on the hard rock genre (which can be found here). It was mentioned that the Kousins would be visiting other years. But before we all move on, it was time to grade the top albums of 1983.
The albums that were graded were (in no particular order):
Quiet Riot - Metal Health
Iron Maiden - Piece of Mind
Metallica - Kill ‘Em All
Def Leppard - Pyromania
Dio - Holy Diver
Kiss - Lick It Up
Motley Crue - Shout at the Devil
Ozzy Osbourne - Bark at the Moon
Y&T - Mean Streak
Twisted Sister - You Can’t Stop Rock n Roll
Accept - Balls to the Wall
Some harsh words were thrown around about some of the albums, some about the other Kousins. But, in the end, the grades were final.
All four Kousins gave their "Now Listenings."

After a week off, the Kousins come back with three-ish songs, each of the things they had been listening to on their time off due to two Kousins unable to record. That just gave the Kousins more time to catch up on their pleasure listening. Kousin Tim makes good on a promise, Kousin Ray stands on convention, Kousin Gary makes a big deal about one of his new favorite places, and Kousin Marvin pushes all boundaries of logic (but that's every week).
A call from Jim From Irwin.

This podcast was recorded in the Omniverus Studios at Liberty Plaza and recorded via Zoom, sponsored by Top Leaf Cigar Lounge.Fri, 05 Apr 2024 - 1h 31min - 326 - Album Gladiator Showdown – Appetite for Delusion Part 2
It's part two, five songs each, for the GnR Album Gladiator Showdown between Kousin Gary and Kousin Ray, with Kousin Tim and Kousin Marvin judging. This one should decide who is the ultimate winner.
To catch you up: A few weeks back, Kousin Ray said that Guns 'N' Roses' Use Your Illusion I & II would be one great album if you trimmed the fat. He also said this album could rival the greatness of GnR's debut, Appetite for Destruction. Kousin Gary took exception to that and said, "No way!" So, here we are today. Kousin Ray took twelve songs from the two UYI albums to pit against the twelve songs of Appetite with Kousin Gary. Last week was part one!
To reiterate the rules: After a coin flip, the winner can either go first or defer their pick. The first picker chooses their "gladiator" or song for battle. After a short listen, the opposing picker chooses the song (or gladiator) to battle the round's opening song. The other two Kousins then vote for the winner. The two pickers can change their vote if they choose to, as well. Whichever song has the most votes... wins. If there's a tie, well, we'll see. If that doesn't make sense, just give it a listen, and it will become as clear as mud.
Calls from Jem From Alabama and Nick Provenzano!
All four Kousins gave their "Now Listening."

If that doesn't make sense, just give it a listen, and it will become as clear as mud.
Luckily (or perhaps unluckily) for Kousin Tim and Kousin Marvin, they just have to be the judges. But this is a hard job and a hard battle to judge. The Showdown only got through about half of the battle this week. Next week is part two!!!

Fri, 15 Mar 2024 - 2h 11min - 324 - The Listening Party: Mick Mars’ ‘The Other Side of Mars’
Kousin Marvin was away on business, but the other three Kousins took in the new solo project from former Motley Crue guitarist Mick Mars. The name of the album is The Other Side of Mars, and if you haven't heard it, you can listen along with us (with commentary, of course).
Pulling back the curtain a smidge, we recorded on an off night, and it was before any calls could come in, so we didn't have those, and since KM was out, we didn't do the "Let Me Know" because it was last minute.
Kousin Tim, Kousin Gary, and Kousin Ray gave their "Now Listenings."

This podcast was recorded in the Omniverus Studios at Liberty Plaza and recorded via Zoom, sponsored by Top Leaf Cigar Lounge.Fri, 08 Mar 2024 - 1h 23min - 323 - Our Tony Levin Story
Kousin Tim and Kousin Gary have jokingly called the amazing bass and Chapman Stick virtuoso Tony Levin our "Lord and Savior." Well, those two got to go, along with their lovely brides, to see Tony, Pat Mastelotto, and Markus Reuter as The Stick Men. You can safely say their minds were blown. They don't expect everyone to understand their love. But, they hope people will at least respect the man for what and who he is.
Now, Tony Levin isn't just Peter Gabriel's bassist. He's not just King Crimson's bassist (Pat Mastelotto is KC's drummer). Tony Levin has been a session player since the early 70s. Kousin Tim and Kousing Gary take Kousin Marvin and Kousin Ray on a musical journey to not only explain Stick Men or King Crimson songs but also the plethora of songs that they know and love that they didn't know Tony was the bass player on. Allow us to take YOU on that journey as well.
We each now have our own "Tony Levin Story."
All four Kousins gave their "Now Listenings."

This podcast was recorded in the Omniverus Studios at Liberty Plaza and recorded via Zoom, sponsored by Top Leaf Cigar Lounge.Fri, 01 Mar 2024 - 1h 56min - 322 - A Live Album Perspective
The Kousins have varying degrees of love or indifference with live albums. Kousin Gary and Kousin Ray love them. Kousin Marvin is a self-professed "fairweather fan," and Kousin Tim doesn't really like many of them. So, let's dive into four live albums and give highlights of each. This way, those who love them can say why, and those who are mostly indifferent can possibly learn something. Did it happen? Who knows...
The albums chosen for this episode were Iron Maiden's Live After Death (1985), Dokken's Beast From The East (1988), Rush's Exit... Stage Left (1981), and Guns 'N' Roses' Live Era: '87-'93 (1999).
We had FIVE phone calls! Jem From Alabama, Jim From Irwin, Bruno From South Africa, Steve Wright from the I Remember Now: The Queensryche Podcast and Nick Provenzano!

This podcast was recorded in the Omniverus Studios at Liberty Plaza and recorded via Zoom, sponsored by Top Leaf Cigar Lounge.Fri, 23 Feb 2024 - 2h 29min - 321 - An Asylum Podcast Pop-Culture Retrospective: 1983
Collectively, the Kousins consider 1983 as their "jumping-in" point for hard rock. Not because there was nothing to listen to prior but because three of the four had no real access to it (they are from West Virginia, after all). All that changed around 1983. There were so many good pop culture things that were happening in 1983, and the Kousins take on a snippet in time and run down what was the root of their hard rock fandom. They talk about movies, television, sports, food/snacks, games, and, of course, music.

In a first for the Kousins, two completely KISS-free albums are being thrown into the ring for an "Album Gladiator Showdown."
This time, it is Judas Priest vs. Judas Priest. Screaming for Vengeance (1982) vs. Defenders of the Faith (1984).
Kousin Marvin defends Vengeance, while Kousin Ray defends Defenders.
To reiterate the rules: After a coin flip, the winner can either go first or defer their pick. The first picker chooses their "gladiator" or song for battle. Kousin Ray was out this week but the other three Kousins were around. Earlier this month, it was Van Halen's 1984's FORTIETH anniversary. Yes FORTY! And, on January 26, it would have been Edward Van Halen's 69th birthday. So, we threw a listening party to celebrate the album and Eddie. It was "old school" since Kousin Ray wasn't on.

So, we are NOW into the new era for the Asylum Podcast.
There's a new segment we debuted tonight on the show, "I Don't Get It." The premise is one of the Kousins doesn't understand why an album or band or artist or whatever is so loved by many and yet misunderstood, despised, or hated by them.
Kousin Tim starts this one off. He cannot understand why people are so gushy over Mötley Crüe's Too Fast For Love album. So, he asked Kousin Gary, Kousin Marvin, and Kousin Ray to explain it to him. Did it help? Does he like it any better than before the episode started? Well, for that, you'll have to listen.

Yeah, we know. We said we were done with the KISS things, at least for a little bit. But, the opportunity to do one last KISS Album Gladiator Showdown came up, and we couldn't go without doing it. But, this time, there is a twist!
The Kousins were not the combatants. This time, it was long-time listeners Nick Provenzano and Jem From Alabama sending their gladiators out to battle.
Jem From Alabama defends his fave of the live albums, 1975's Alive! while Nick defends his fave, 1977's Alive II. The Kousins, for the first time, are the judges of the showdown. And here's a spoiler... this was only PART ONE! We will be back with Part Two in the second week of 2024. Who will come out on top?

Fri, 22 Dec 2023 - 2h 15min - 314 - A New Era-ish…
Last week we announced the end of the road for the KISS podcast. It's time. We need to move on. BUT... we're not going anywhere. We are our own Avatars in this scenario. We are rising like a phoenix from the ashes as a "hard rock" podcast. We will not abandon KISS, of course not, but we are opening the floodgates to all the other hard-rocking things out there.
This week, to get things started, we did an extended "Now Listening" since it's a favorite part for us, and we've heard the same from listeners, as well. Each "Kousin," and yes, we're still going by that, submitted three songs for the segment.
We had calls from Bruno from Sunny South Africa, and Jem from Alabama. Then, things kind of went sideways. Nick Provenzano called and made an open challenge and said that there was unfinished business on the KISS side of things. You'll have to listen to find out what happened next... (that's what we call in the business, a "cliffhanger")
What do you think of the end of the road for the KISS podcast and moving into a more general rock discussion podcast?

The Kousins took a different approach to the albums in the last two weeks. In the past, we have ranked them, given them listening parties, "reduxed" the hell out of them, "gladiatored" them, and just about everything else you can think of. But we've never graded them. Part One included 14 albums picked by a randomizer, and for Part Two, there were 15. We left out the compilations but included the solo albums and live albums. It was a fun exercise. We're off for the next two weeks, so enjoy your Thanksgiving!

The whole gang is back together for a "family reunion." This week, the Kousins talk about the producers of our favorite band's albums. Because of time restraints, the Kousins got through the 1970s and into the 1980s. The conversation will pick back up next week. But, for this week, discussed was Kenny Kerner & Richie Wise, Neil Bogart, Bob Ezrin, Eddie Kramer, Jeff Glixman, Sean Delaney, and Vini Poncia. All the way through Music From 'The Elder.'
All four Kousins gave their "Now Listenings."
Calls from Jem From Alabama and Nick Provenzano.
What are your thoughts on those producers from the early days?

Kousin Marvin is out returning videotapes this week.
The remaining Kousins gave a listen, along with a critique, of Paul's 2008 live album, One Live KISS, recorded at the House of Blues in Chicago. There was a mixture of songs from KISS, Paul's 1978 solo album, and the Live to Win (2006) album. The backing band was the house band for CBS's Rockstar: INXS and Rockstar: Supernova, and most members are currently the house band for NBC's The Voice.
There is a call from Jem From Alabama.
Kousin Gary and Roadie Ray had "Now Listenings."

The Kousins welcome Steve from Podder Than Hell Podcast, who also is co-host with Roadie Ray on the I Remember Now - The Queensryche Podcast, to talk about Ray, Kousin Marvin, and Kousin Gary seeing Geoff Tate live in late September. Steve talks Queensryche with the best of them, so it was great to have him with the Kousins. It was fun having Steve on!
All five gave their "Now Listenings," and all, except for Kousin Tim, talked about the show, the setlist, the highlights, things they'd change, and more.

The Kousins, and even Roadie Ray, are trying something new. An idea that Eugene B. Sims brought up from Wheeler's Dog Podcast, the Kousins tweaked and modified it. Instead of the KISS Album Gladiator Battle, the Kousins picked a KISS album, and using a randomizer, one Kousin gets to pick if they want to defend the KISS album or an album that came out the same year as the KISS album. Then another randomizer picks who will defend the other. The "other" is withheld until all the players are chosen.
This week, it is Rock and Roll Over vs. Alice Cooper Goes to Hell, both from 1976.
Which Kousins were pitted? You'll have to listen for that info!
Jem From Alabama and Eugene B Sims called in.
All four Kousins gave their "Now Listenings."

Roadie Ray is out again with a business thing. But the Kousins would have loved to have heard his thoughts on this week's album... Psycho Circus. It was reviewed by the Kousins in December 2020. How have their thoughts changed? Have they changed at all? It's "Listening Party" style from the "return of the Original KISS." That's completely a misnomer, by the way.
The Kousins gave their "now listenings."
A call from Jem From Alabama and a discussion starter call from Nick Provenzano.

After an unexpected week off where we thought we'd be without Roadie Ray for an episode, the whole gang was together to finish out the "Lust" songs, this time the creepiest, cringiest, most questionable, beautifully written songs in the KISS Katalog.
And it happens to be our favorite Demon's birthday tomorrow. So, the list is fitting, we think.
Jim From Alabama and Nick Provenzano both call in.

Kousin Marvin is out this episode, it was the annual washing of the backside for him. Yeah, it only happens once a year.
But, as a companion to the Top 10 Love Songs two episodes ago, we decided to get more naughty and focus on the "lust" songs.
Both Jim From Alabama and Steve from I Remember Now: The Queensrÿche Podcast (and Podder Than Hell Podcast) called into give their takes on our BOC episode last episode.

This podcast was recorded in the Omniverus Studios at Liberty Plaza and recorded via Zoom, sponsored by Top Leaf Cigar Lounge.Fri, 11 Aug 2023 - 1h 56min - 301 - The Opening Act: BÖC – A Beginner’s Guide
None of the Kousins are deep Blue Öyster Cult fans. None of the Kousins dislike the band, either.
We are all pedestrian fans of varying degrees. Kousin Tim is probably the one at the bottom, whereas Roadie Ray or Kousin Marvin may be at the top. Kousin Gary is probably in the middle.
That being said, from our conversations about "albums that changed our lives," Jim From Alabama had listed BÖC on his top albums list during a call. So, the Kousins decided to create a "beginner's guide" to BÖC like we were creating a mixtape of 10 songs from the band. There aren't many deep cuts. There aren't many surprises. But, there is a lot of fun in this episode.
Jim From Alabama called in.
The Kousins shared their "Now Listening" and in some cases "Now Watching" and even got into the weeds about films and television shows.

A lot of hard rock music, and especially KISS, featured the "s**k me, f**k me" mindset when it comes to lyrical content. But, when challenged, the Kousins found out their favorite band could actually write love songs. Not songs about hooking up, but songs about love. Yeah, we said it.

There was an article in Goldmine magazine where Bruce Kulick talks about the 10 albums that "changed his life."
So, the Kousins decided to do a Top 10 of their own. But, because they're all long-winded, they got through numbers 10-6 last week. So, this is part TWO of the topic. It is another long one. This is numbers 5-1.
The Kousins did a sort of "Now Listening" as a tribute to the late, great Eric Carr in celebration of his birthday.
Jim From Alabama and Nick Provenzano each called and gave THEIR top 10 albums from 10-5. Hopefully, we get their 5-1 next week!

Kousin Marvin and Roadie Ray had engagements for this recording, so Kousin Tim and Kousin Gary recruited Eugene B. Sims from the Wheeler's Dog Podcast to come and sit in.
He devised a plan to be the judge of an Album Gladiator Battle but, since it's so close to the first of the month, have it be opening acts. KT and KG didn't know which albums they'd be duking it out with. You have to listen to find out who defended what, but it turns out that both Kousins chose Cheap Trick albums.
Eug had a hard time judging, and there will be a couple of Twitter votes to happen.

Roadie Ray is back on the podcast after a two-week assignment!
The Kousins have done album showdowns before. But, in some instances, that just doesn't seem fair to some of the songs on the two albums.
The time period between 1987-1989 in KISStory was a bit polarizing for many fans. Perhaps we use that term way too often, but this is KISS we're talking about, and we fans are VERY opinionated about "eras."
Kousin Tim picks Crazy Nights (because he hates the other album) while Roadie Ray takes hold of the reins for Hot In The Shade. It is a pivotal battle because KT is 2-0 while Ray is 2-1 overall. Kousins Marvin and Gary are the judges.
How is this different from most album battles the Kousins have done? After a coin flip, the winner can either go first or defer their pick. The first picker chooses their "gladiator" or song for battle. After a short listen, the opposing picker chooses the song (or gladiator) to battle the round's opening song. The other two Kousins then vote for the winner. The two pickers can change their vote if they choose to, as well. Whichever song has the most votes... wins. If there's a tie, it goes to Twitter for tiebreaker votes. If that doesn't make sense, just give a listen and it will become as clear as mud.
The Kousins gave their now listenings. And a return call from Jim From Alabama!

This podcast was recorded in The Such-N-Such Media Studios at Liberty Plaza and recorded via Zoom, sponsored by Top Leaf Cigar Lounge.Fri, 09 Jun 2023 - 2h 35min - 294 - Remembering Bob Kulick
May 28 was the third anniversary of the passing of Bob Kulick. Yes, Bob was Bruce's older brother. Yes, Bob came through in a pinch on some KISS tracks. Yes, Bob was the guitarist on Paul's 1978 solo record.
But Bob was much more than that. Bob played with the likes of Lou Reed, Michael Bolton, Doro, WASP, in the touring band and some album work with Meat Loaf and more. He did the guitars for the song "Sweet Victory" from the Spongebob Squarepants episode "Band Geeks." And he was the guitarist in the early '90s band, Skull.
The Kousins, minus Roadie Ray who is still on assignment somewhere that what happens stays there, give a little retrospective tribute to the elder Kulick brother.
The Kousins gave their "Now Listenings."

In 1985, the "Satanic Panic" and other over-the-top, ridiculous, and unhelpful movements were in heavy force. One of the worst ideas that anyone could do was create a "Senator's Wives" committee to police the music industry to keep sex, drugs, violence, and Satan out of other people's kids' lives.
That's when the Parents Music Resource "Center" (or PMRC) began.
It was a crusade to sanitize the sinful messages that rock and pop music brought to the youth, and if they didn't jump in, we were all doomed.
They pushed to have lyrics sheets, warning stickers about potentially harmful lyrics, and published a list of the fifteen most offensive songs. This is that list. From Prince to Motley Crue, Venom and Def Leppard, to Madonna and Sheena Easton. SHEENA-frickin'-EASTON!!! You can see the whole list here, but we got you and played parts of each one of them.

The first week of the month means "Opening Act" shows. Many are surprised to find out that Judas Priest opened for KISS in 1979 on the Dynasty tour. They would have been supporting the Killing Machine (or Hell Bent for Leather in the States due to the Cleveland Elementary School Massacre). But we didn't do that one this week. Instead, we are doing Roadie Ray's favorite Priest album, 1984's Defenders of the Faith. We give it a "listening party" treatment.

The Kousins walk you through this hidden gem of a record, the Off the Soundboard - Poughkeepsie 1984.
April is the month of fools. Right?
Okay. Let's just say this and get it out of the way. We are sorry. We are so very sorry that you have to hear us talk about this record. If that gives something away, then so be it.
But it's worth it to hear Roadie Ray talk about Paul and Gene the way he does. This record is one of only two (and a half) shows that Mark St. John plays guitar. There are many reasons he didn't make it in KISS. You'll hear just one of them in this episode. Well, more than one example but one reason.
Jim from Alabama called in again. Here's hoping he does that often!

Three of the four Kousins saw KISS on their Hot in the Shade tour. Each of those got two openers. Band "X" and Slaughter.
For Kousin Tim, it was his first concert. July 27, 1990. And, yes, he was almost 20 before he got to see his first concert. The openers for KT were Danger Danger and Slaughter.
The Kousins did an average of each band's setlists on their legs of the HITS tour. With that, they did a semi-listening party.
Were the songs or bands as good as they may have remembered? You'll have to tune in for that.

The Kousins have done album showdowns before. But, in some instances, that just doesn't seem fair to some of the songs on the two albums.
This week, Roadie Ray commands 1979's Dynasty while Kousin Gary defends that album's sibling, 1980's Unmasked. Two albums, both some of the most polarizing in the Katalog, that fans either love or hate. Most people aren't on the fence about them. Kousin Tim and Kousin Marvin both like each album, so they have the unenviable task of judging. There were some ties, so look for those on Twitter and cast your vote.
How is this different from most album battles the Kousins have done? After a coin flip, the winner can either go first or defer their pick. The first picker chooses their "gladiator" or song for battle. After a short listen, the opposing picker chooses the song (or gladiator) to battle the round's opening song. Roadie Ray had to put out some fires in his day job, so the Kousins had to go on without him this week.
This week is the anniversary of 1975's Dressed To Kill. Three of the four Kousins think that album is mostly "filler," or songs put in to fill in the cracks and extend the length of the album.
For this episode, Kousin Tim, Kousin Gary, and Kousin Marvin go from KISS (self-titled) through Unmasked (not counting live, solo, or greatest hits albums) and debate and sometimes argue over which songs could have been left off. There were some "rules" that were never really followed, but they gave it a good college try (not really). There were some drop-jaw moments for sure as one of the Kousins is a total "contrarian."
The Kousins gave their "Now Listening" and covered the "Let Me Know" section.

Not technically the opening week of the month (okay, not at all...) we decided to do an "opener" topic. Iron Maiden opened for KISS on the Unmasked tour in 1980 which was odd because that was KISS's poppiest album and IM was like a hard rock punk band. A strange pairing indeed.
So each Kousin picked their own Top 5. There were some diverse choices, but the end came down to two heavy hitters. In the end, a collective Top 5 was determined via weighted scoring.
Kousin Tim gloated a bit on a recent victory, and each Kousin gave their "Now Listenings."
What would be your Top 5 IM songs?

The Kousins have done album showdowns before. But, in some instances, that just doesn't seem fair to some of the songs on the two albums.
Kousin Tim and Kousin Marvin battle with two albums chosen by our Twitter fans. This time around, for the battle of first place in the tourney, KT takes Lick It Up and KM takes Revenge.
How would your vote go on the songs on the LIU or Revenge?

This podcast was recorded in The Such-N-Such Media Studios at Liberty Plaza and recorded via Zoom, sponsored by Top Leaf Cigar Lounge.Fri, 10 Mar 2023 - 2h 08min - 282 - Top KISS Riffs
For the first time in our podcast's history, we were a duo. Kousin Marvin had a family issue and Roadie Ray had a work thing. So, Kousins Tim and Gary went on with the show. Barstools and caffeine drinks and all. That part isn't true.
But, the conversation was the top riffs from KISS. Specifically, the top from Paul, Gene, and Ace. We know that Peter didn't write anything musical. Heck, he barely even wrote lyrics.
We had a discussion last week about the difference between a riff and a lick. KT had it all wrong, exactly the opposite, really. Here's the definition of each.
Essentially a riff is a full musical phrase with a structure and repetition to ensure the ear catches and understands its wholeness. That is why it is an entity of its own. On the other hand, a lick is an incomplete musical idea that, if put together with other licks, can amount to a riff. (Rock Guitar Universe)
These were all from the early makeup era. KT and KG went through a collective Top 15 with some honorable mentions and a "bonus."
KT/G gave their riff-influence "Now Listenings."
What are your favorite KISS riffs?

The Kousins plus Euge
Eugene B. Sims from Wheeler's Dog Podcast joins the Kousins to discuss the first Van Halen album, Van Halen (1978).
Euge tells the story of the first time he heard the album, and the Kousins tell their stories, too.
More Van Halen albums were discussed. Why is this a relevant topic for a KISS podcast? The album was in direct correlation to the demo that Gene Simmons produced.
The Kousins and Euge give their now listenings.
Do you remember your first experience with Van Halen, first album or otherwise?Fri, 03 Feb 2023 - 1h 59min - 279 - Live to Win
The Kousins continue the celebration of Paul Stanley's birthday from last week and do a "listening party" of the 2006 release Live to Win.
All the Kousins could pretty much agree they didn't really want to listen to the album, but some turned out to more than just like it. You'll have to guess which one.

The Kousins have done album showdowns before. But, in some instances, that just doesn't seem fair to some of the songs on the two albums.
This week, Kousin Marvin put his #1 (on his ranking list), Hotter Than Hell, against Roadie Ray's #1, Love Gun. What makes this cool is that these two albums are powerhouses in the KISS Katalog.
How is this different from most album battles the Kousins have done? After a coin flip, the winner can either go first or defer their pick. The first picker chooses their "gladiator" or song for battle. After a short listen, the opposing picker chooses the song (or gladiator) to battle the round's opening song. The first podcast of 2023!!
With the new year comes a new name. We had to close down the Devereaux Diaries asylum due to budget cuts, and the inmates kept peeing on the walls and stuff. So now, we are Asylum: The KISS Podcast.
Also, it was time for a new feature. The Kousins have done album showdowns before. But, in some instances, that just doesn't seem fair to some of the songs on the two albums.
So, Kousin Gary put his #1 (on his ranking list), Carnival of Souls, against Kousin Tim's #1, Music from 'The Elder.' What makes this cool is that these two albums are the biggest outliers in the whole KISS Katalog. They both come with asterisks (*) as they have no companions. And for the newbies, as Roadie Ray said, yes, Kousins Gary and Tim are serious; these are really their #1s.
The difference here is: after a coin flip, the winner gets to either go first or defer their pick. The first picker chooses their "gladiator" or song for battle. After a short listen, the opposing picker chooses the song (or gladiator) to battle the round's opening song. The other two Kousins then vote for the winner. The two pickers can change their vote if they choose to, as well. Whichever song has the most votes wins. If there's a tie, it goes to Twitter for tiebreaker votes. If that doesn't make sense, just give a listen, and it will become as clear as mud.

The Internet held up for the Kousins this week. Yay tech!
There was a return recap of the two WASP concerts the Kousins paired off to see last month.
Kousin Marvin and Roadie Ray saw them in a town called Glenside, PA, whilst Kousin Tim and Kousin Gary saw them in Charlotte, NC.
There was then a "Listening Party" of the 1992 concept album Crimson Idol.

The "Let Me Know" section, the entertaining calls from Uncle Stevie and "Dave," and "Now Listening" were all there.
But, as we started talking about WASP, the internet at the Such-N-Such Media Studios at Liberty Plaza had a hiccup, and the show couldn't go on.

The Creatures of the Night Box Set is coming out this week.
The Kousins decided to talk about what kind of box set they'd each like to see come out. Or at least what they'd spend money on.
They also talked about what they were listening to, as well as calls from Eugene from Wheeler's Dog Podcast and good pal Nick!

Kousin Gary has made no bones about COS being one of his favorite KISS albums. He calls it his album! from his band!
Who can argue with that? Well, what would have happened if the band hadn't embarked on the reunion tour in 1996/1997? Or, if they had still done the reunion tour, what would have happened after?
What would the COS tour setlist look like? Remember, this is 1997, 25 years ago. What songs would have made it, and how many would be from COS?
Each Kousin were tasked with coming up with their own setlist for the COS tour they envisioned.
The Kousins also talked about their "now listenings" and why a certain band from the late 80s/early 90s gets such a bad rap.

Finally, the Kousins talk about the delightful piece of cinematic magic that is our namesake. Part of that statement is true, and part of it isn't. It is our namesake.
The movie is truly bad, and there are probably no KISS fans that think of it any differently.
Now, that doesn't mean that it doesn't hold a dear place in our hearts. But to what degree?
That, you'll have to listen to the episode for.
Each Kousin talks about what they were listening to this week.

The Kousins and Roadie Ray decided to dedicate the show to her memory and to "give the drummer some," if you will.
Songs that had to do with her, RR, Queensryche, Iron Maiden, and so on. Not a lot of KISS this time around but it was all about the Pharaohs (Farrows).

The Kousins and Roadie Ray (he kept the position just reverted the name) do an Opening Act show, being the first podcast of the month (yes it's still March but the last day): Whitesnake ('87).
It gets the "Listening Party" treatment and Kousin Gary gives you more info about John Sykes (the guitarist on the album) than you'd ever want to know.
He crushed so hard we think John Corabi is getting jealous.
Also, the Kousins+1 give what they've been listening to this week for your consideration.
What do you think of the Whitesnake album? Does it still hold up?

The Kousins and Road Manager Ray talk about KISS' third studio album, the one that possibly set the band up to continue as it was the tour that led to Alive! which is the one that gave the world Rock and Roll All Nite.
The album gets the "Listening Party" treatment.
Kousin Tim has never been shy about his disdain for the album in general but loves a few songs. Have his tastes changed? Does he feel different about it?

Then there's the Destroyer album given the "Listening Party" treatment.

The Kousins (well two of the three - Kousin Marvin is absent) welcome listener Nick Provenzano on to talk about KISS' second "live" album, Alive II.
We give it the "Listening Party" treatment that it didn't get the first time we listened through.
We go through the album (all 20 songs) and give our opinions, facts, and figures on it. Whether we make up any of that or not!
Nick gives his "now listening" tunes and why, as do Kousin Tim and Kousin Gary.

The Kousins bring a new monthly series to the Asylum: The Opening Act.
KISS has had a lot of big-name acts open for them on their own road to stardom. We want to highlight some of those.
The inaugural chapter of this is one of the first bands to open for KISS, on and off, 1974-1976. We dive into Rush's 1981 album, Moving Pictures, which celebrated its 41st anniversary in February. We give it the "listening party" treatment and the only regret that we had was that Roadie Ray wasn't with us. Listen in for our critique.
How does Rush's "Moving Pictures" rate with you?

The Kousins and Road Manager Ray welcome the first non-"family" (blood or otherwise) guest to the show.
Jay Jadofsky, one of the organizers for Creatures Fest, joins to discuss the event.
What is Creatures Fest? It is the only KISS-themed event outside KISS Kruise that will happen this year, with the "holy trinity" of KISS guitarists, Ace Frehley, Vinnie Vincent, and Bruce Kulick at one festival, plus Peter Criss.
There are a plethora of other bands going to be there, to help celebrate the KISS family.
Jay talks about the festival, his KISStory, and KISS in general.

The Kousins listen to the album that is the namesake of the podcast, 1985's Klassic, "Asylum."
Of course, it features the Kousins' favorite KISS lineup (collectively) with Bruce Kulick and Eric Carr, has what Kousin Tim calls two of KISS' best songs, makeup era or non-makeup era, and we dive a little deeper checking out things we may not have known the first time we listened to it.
What do you think of this album?
Is it King of the Mountain or Secretly Cruel?

The Kousins are joined by Road Manager Ray (catchy new name, there) and revisit the 1989 Klassic(?) "Hot in the Shade" in the "listening party format."
Kousin Tim ranked it pretty low on his list, Kousin Marvin and Kousin Gary rank it respectably and Road Manager Ray really liked it.
How did their feelings change after the initial rankings and how do they feel about the songs?
Kousin Tim has a Kissfession.

The Kousins listen to their own curated compilation of songs they think should have been released as singles but were not.
Some would have been cool to have been singles but some are just plain shameful that they weren't.
The rule is the song couldn't have been released as a single, but B-Sides are okay.
Also, Roadie Ray news...
Which "deep-cut" KISS songs would you like to see released?

Roadie Ray sits in as an "honorary Kousin" for the night, too.
Spoiler alert! We loved the show! Come along & show it some love with us.
