The Cambridge University Law Society (CULS) is one of the oldest and largest student run societies in the University, the country and indeed the world. With a membership base of over a 1000, its aims are manifold and its enterprises diverse. Each year, the Law Society invites eminent speakers to address its members. The events are an exciting chance to hear from leaders in their respective fields about issues crucial to the modern legal world. Lord Clarke of the UK Supreme Court spoke about "Duties of an Expert Witness – before and after the Ikarian Reefer" on Thursday 28 January 2016 at the Faculty of Law, as a guest on the regular CULS speaker programme. Lord Clarke read economics and law at King's College, Cambridge, before being called, in 1965, to the Bar at Middle Temple where he spent 27 years. He became a QC in 1979, and was a Recorder sitting in both criminal and civil courts from 1985 to 1992. Lord Clarke was promoted to the Court of Appeal of England and Wales in 1998 and sworn of the Privy Council. Thereafter, he conducted the Marchioness and Bowbelle Inquiries. Between 2005 and 2009, Lord Clarke served as Master of the Rolls, and was appointed to the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom in October 2009. CULS and CUSU LGBT+ are delighted to have welcomed Herman Duarte, Founding Partner at the first and only law firm in Latin America that has the express purpose of eradicating LGBT+ discrimination to the Faculty of Law on 29 January 2018. Herman also founded the Latin American Foundation for the promotion and protection of LGBT rights: Fundación Igualitos. He was named one of OUTstanding's Top 50 LGBT+ Future Leaders. Herman and his team were involved in the landmark decision of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights in favour of equal marriage and transgender rights, binding on Costa Rica and over 12 states in the Inter-American jurisdiction. Herman is a vocal advocate for Equal Marriage in El Salvador, and organised the first Equal Marriage congress for the continent, in Costa Rica. He works to denounce hate crimes against LGBT+ people in the region, raising public opinion and support on the topic of marriage equality and gender recognition. Paul Bowen QC spoke about "The Last Human Right, or its Antithesis? Assisted Suicide, Euthanasia, the Right to Life and the Right to Choose the Timing and Manner of Death" on Friday 25th January 2013 at the Faculty of Law, as a guest on the regular CULS speaker programme, Law Society Advocate of the Year 2009 and counsel for Tony Nicklinson in the widely publicised euthanasia case in August 2012, Paul Bowen QC is a barrister at Doughty Street Chambers specialising in public law and human rights, with a particular interest in cases involving serious medical treatment, the right of autonomy and the right to life. In the Divisional Court, he argued that the law "encourages those with the means to Switzerland. For those without the means it offers 'Hobson's Choice' of amateur DIY death or continued suffering. Those who cannot end their own life are left to suffer". Mr Bowen acted for Debbie Purdy in her successful challenge to the DPP's policy on assisted suicide prosecutions in 2008 and also represented Peter Sutcliffe in his tariff-setting appeal in December 2010. A discussion held with Judge James Crawford on 9 October 2015. CULS was delighted to partner with Clifford Chance for the first speaker event of Michaelmas term. On the 9th of October, His Excellency Judge James Crawford spoke to the society. The format of the event was an interview followed by a Q & A. James Crawford was elected a judge of the International Court of Justice for a full term of 9 years in November 2014 and took his seat on the court on the 6th February 2015. From 1992-2014 he was the Whewell Professor of International Law at the University of Cambridge. He is widely considered to be one of the foremost commentators on public international law in the world. This was the first time Judge Crawford addressed the society since taking up his role at the ICJ.
