Fri, 13 Mar 2026 - 1h 02min - 269 - Quick update: new episodes return in April
A quick update and some thanks!
Over the past 12 months...Canadian True Crime has had the opportunity to take on several meaningful projects alongside the usual podcast production. These included the CBC documentary Breaking Idol, the co-founding of Beyond The Verdict survivor-led advocacy group, and in-depth coverage of the 2025 Hockey Canada trial. While incredibly rewarding, the extra activities made for a very intense year behind the scenes. After the recent Robert Pickton series ended, it became clear we needed to pause, step back and reset things.
Your support by listening to the podcast is what makes all of this work possible, so this year we're focusing on getting the podcast back into balance for sustainability.
New episodes will return in April.Until then, we'll be replaying a few carefully selected episodes from our archive with new personal introductions from Kristi.
Thank you again for listening and supporting the show! Your patience and understanding is appreciated.
Mentioned in this episode:
Breaking Idol - new CBC TV documentary
Beyond The Verdict - new survivor-led advocacy group
Mysterious letter - Beverley Rowbotham's family believes it could shed light on the case (25th anniversary)
Guest appearances:
CTV – The Social - with co-hosts Melissa Grelo and Jess Allan about survivor-centered storytelling, deep research, and the Jacob Hoggard case
The Soundoff Podcast - with host Matt Cundill about the business side of podcasting and more
Broadcast Dialogue - Kristi shares the ups and downs of her podcasting journey with host Connie Thiessen, including managing burnout and perfectionism...

Sun, 15 Jan 2023 - 34min - 267 - Cold Season 3: The Search for Sheree
Sheree Warren left her job in Salt Lake City on a mild October evening in 1985. She told a coworker she was headed to meet her estranged husband, Charles Warren, at a car dealership. But she never made it, Sheree vanished. When her car mysteriously surfaced weeks later, hundreds of miles away in Las Vegas, no one could say how it got there.
When a young mother disappears under unexplained circumstances, police always turn suspicious eyes towards the husband. And although there was distrust around Charles Warren, he wasn’t the only suspect when Sheree went missing. She also had a boyfriend, a former cop named Cary Hartmann, who lived a sinister double life.
Season three follows two suspects– men who both raised suspicion for investigators. But with two strong persons of interest with competing facts and evidence, it muddied the murder investigation. This season, host Dave Cawley, digs into the lives of these two men, the details of the case and examines the intersections between domestic abuse and sexual violence. The COLD team seeks to answer the question: what really happened to Sheree Warren?

Mon, 26 Jan 2026 - 1h 13min - 262 - Robert Pickton: The Final Chapter [1]
A brand new four-part series.
In 2024, Canada’s most prolific serial killer was murdered in prison in an act of vigilante justice. The final chapter of Robert Pickton may now be closed, but the story is far from over.
Pickton confessed to murdering 49 women on his pig farm near Vancouver, many of them sex workers and Indigenous women.
The evidence suggests he did not act alone.
-----
Part 1 begins by tracing a disturbing childhood on the Pickton farm where cruelty was normalized, morality was optional and vulnerable people were exploited and intimidated. It also tracks how that culture escalated after Robert and his brother took over the farm, and the many police failures that followed.
This series revisits the entire case to date, moving past the grotesque caricature of a lone monster in buddy boots, and restores the humanity of the women targeted through personal stories of those who loved them. It examines the culture and systems that failed them for so long, leaving their loved ones with many unanswered questions — and a prevailing sense of injustice.
This miniseries draws primarily from court records, historical news archives, investigative journalism, personal interviews and the Missing Women Inquiry final report.
CONTENT WARNING: this series includes graphic details that will be distressing for many listeners to hear, including mention of sexual assault, residential schools, Indigenous issues, child abuse and suicide.

Sat, 25 Oct 2025 - 51min - 253 - Analyzing the Hockey Canada trial [5]
[Part 5 of 5] This final instalment wraps up our coverage and analysis of the Hockey Canada scandal and trial. At the end, Kristi shares her personal opinion about what likely happened in Room 209 that night — and why the verdicts would have remained the same anyway. The difference is in how the judge got there.
Please note: this series does not dispute the judge’s not guilty verdicts.
Our position is that the framing of the evidence in the written decision was unnecessary and damaging, with impact that extends far beyond the trial.

[Part 3 of 5] In Part 3, we unpack the confusing timeline of Room 209 and the contradictions at the heart of the case. A clear pattern emerges: the five accused players were repeatedly given the benefit of the doubt, while E.M. was scrutinized and cast as unreliable.
Thanks for your patience with this deep-dive series and for allowing us the time to give it the attention it deserves. Part 4 will wrap this series up, and then we’ll be back to our usual schedule.

Fri, 19 Sep 2025 - 1h 30min - 250 - Analyzing the Hockey Canada trial [2]
[Part 2 of 5] The Hockey Canada verdicts are final, but the story isn’t. Kristi Lee looks closely at the most talked-about evidence, how it was reflected in the written decision, and how that shaped public opinion. Thanks for your patience!
In this episode:
The flaws in the first police investigation - and why it didn't result in chargesMichael McLeod's instagram exchange with EM the day after the hotel room incidentThe "group chat" six days later that appears to show the hockey players trying to get their stories straightThe series of debacles that resulted in this jury trial switching to judge-aloneSurvivors JB and Kelly Favro return to share their perspectives about watching this case unfold not only as survivors — but also as massive hockey fans.*Additional content warning: Details of sexual acts.
PLEASE NOTE: This series does not dispute the judge’s verdicts. Instead, it highlights a deeper truth: contradictions and inconsistencies existed on bothsides, yet the accused players’ accounts were overwhelmingly accepted while the victim-complainant's was dismissed as “not credible or reliable.” Regardless of verdicts, our position is that this framing was both unnecessary and harmful — and its impact reaches far beyond the trial itself.

A four-part special new presentation to commemorate the 15th anniversary of the controversial death of Toronto bike messenger Darcy Allan Sheppard.
Sheppard v Bryant
On August 31, 2009, there was a catastrophic collision between a cyclist and a motorist on a busy downtown Toronto street — a collision so unfathomable that it shocked bystanders and the city at large.
Darcy Allan Sheppard died on the street that night. The motorist, former Ontario Attorney General Michael Bryant was arrested, charged, and released the next morning. The way the case unfolded in the media – and the justice system – would be hotly debated for years to come.

Tue, 23 Jul 2024 - 1h 17min - 210 - Susan Klassen
36-year-old Susan Klassen had only lived in Whitehorse for a few years, but she made a considerable impact on the local community as a renowned modern storyteller with the Yukon International Storytelling Festival. Susan’s death—and the public outrage that followed—was named the #1 story in the Yukon for 1997.
“Throughout her life, she deeply touched the lives and hearts of many. Along with her love of nature, one of Susan’s greatest joys was to share her talent of storytelling.” - Obituary
This episode is about an important case that became a watershed moment for the local community in Whitehorse, Yukon, and across the country. We’ve pieced it together from court documents and the news archives, most notably the reporting of Caroline Murray and Yvette Brend for the Whitehorse Daily Star. Our sincere condolences to Susan Klassen’s loved ones and anyone else affected by this crime.

In each episode of Pretendians, co-hosts Robert Jago (Kwantlen First Nation and Nooksack Indian Tribe) and Angel Ellis (Muscogee (Creek) Nation) reveal unbelievable stories of audacious fraudsters and investigate the complex phenomenon of Indigenous identity theft.
