Pipe Question:
Good morning gentlemen! I have a pipe question for you. How does (if it actually does) the chamber size and shape affect the burn and smoking characteristics of the tobacco? Blessings, Gabriel RoperListener Feedback:
Hey Guys I'm huge fan of the pirate and tobacco series. Nov 3 I was on a cruise to Nassau Bahamas where they have a pirate museum. Which was amazing . As walked around the island I got to learn alot of pirate history while puffing on my cob with captain black. It was amazing. I had downloaded and listened all the pirate ands tobacco episodes on the plane ride. Good job guys can't wait to hear more tells from the sea. - Antwan ButlerWith all the Pirate-themed episodes you are doing I thought you might like to listen to Alestorm, they are a Scottish Pirate Metal band. I recommend Keelhauled and Hangover to start. Not pipe related, but it is pipe adjacent. Thanks for what you do, I love the podcast and really hope to make the pilgrimage one day. Pipe Question:
Jeremy Dukes - pipe cleaners. They come in “soft’n’fluffy” and “hard’n’bristly”. I’ve always tended towards the hard cleaners because I refurbished so many pipes and used those bristles to really get the gunk out, but some swear soft is the only way to avoid damaging the stem. What are the two different cleaners intended to be used for? Is it preference or do they actually have separate functions?Listener Feedback:
Hi Beau and Master Jon David, Gerson here. I am writing you guys to share with you and all Country Squire Radio community a bit of a special Brazilian folklore character deeply connected with pipe and pipe smoking called Saci Pererê. The Saci Pererê is considered one of the main characters in Brazilian folklore. Of course, there are many versions of his lore, but he is commonly depicted as a young one-legged black kid who wears a red hat and is always smoking his pipe. There are a few stories to explain how he lost his leg, but the most common one is that he lost it fightingcapoeira(a Brazilian type of martial art with African roots) or had it chopped off by slavers when he was enslaved himself. It is believed that Saci moves around as a wind swirl and there are ‘techniques’ to capture and imprison him in glass bottles. He likes to play tricks (usually harmless) on people wherever he goes, such as topping people’s hats, spoiling food, and scaring horses. It is believed that he lives up to 77 years of age and then he is transformed into a poisonous mushroom. There are other versions of this mystical being in other South American countries, such as Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay. However, in Brazil, his lore originated in the southern region during the 18th century among the indigenous people know as the Guarani but throughout time, it incorporated European and African influences. But let us get to the point. As I mentioned, Saci Pererê is always depicted smoking his pipe. Of course, there is no way of knowing what he smoked in it, but I guess it was some type of cured twisted tobacco (or “rope tobacco” as we call it here in Brazil), very common among pipe smokers of the past who lived in small towns, villages and farms on the Brazilian countryside. Symbolically, the smoke represents the connection between physical and the spiritual worlds, as it does in many African-based religious ceremonies. The smoking element originates from its indigenous roots but is also influenced by the African culture. Some versions of Saci depict him as having a through-and-through hole in his hand which has the purpose, among other things, of facilitating the emptying of his bowl by knocking the pipe on his hand. Some say the hole is where he keeps the cinder used to light his pipe. I included below a few illustrations o this amazing Brazilian folklore character. - Gerson Fernandino de A. Neto

Pipe Question:
Good morning brothers, I just finished listening to the episode “caught you blending” from 12 sep. 2018. I’m really excited to try out blending with some better knowledge now. A month ago, I took about 3 pounds of various high quality tobaccos that didn’t make the rotation, mixed them all up, and pressed them in the “poor man’s press” y’all talked about in a previous episode. It’s ready to come out now so I’ll send some along soon. Let me know what you think. That reminds me, someone asked you about making a highland grog coffee flavored tobacco on an episode recently, and you confessed to not knowing what that was. So, I’m sending you a bag of both kinds of highland grog that I know of. Let me know what you think eh? At the end of the episode in blending, I had one question for you, what are the general ratios for the different “standard” blends? English, aromatic, VaPer, Virginia etc - Thanks for all you do, please keep it up! - Gabriel RoperQuickfire Questions:

Hi JD and Beau, - I just finished listening to the vintage tin art episode and was surprised to find out that I have actually tried a tobacco that neither of you have. I am speaking about the 5 Brothers, I was a bit surprised that given how long it's been around you haven't had it, so I thought that this time the listener could advised the hosts. In my experience 5 Brothers is best in a small corn cob pipe like the short stop or Morgan from Missouri Meerschaum. The reason behind this is 5 Brothers is a very strong nicotine forward blend and is best enjoyed in small amounts. This last piece of advice regarding 5 Brothers is crucial, do not smoke it in your home. I have a very understanding wife in regards to my pipe smoking and doesn't mind when I partake in the leaf, except this one, it's the only blend I have that I am 100% forbidden to smoke in the house due to how close it smells to cigarettes. Anyway keep up the good work with the show and I'm looking forward to hearing the next episode. - Dave aka DRAlien

Pipe Question:
From Don - Maybe you can help me with an issue i'm having. Any time I have something with burley in it, i find that i have a lingering harshness in the back of my mouth/throat that stays for many hours. It doesn't seem to matter how cool i smoke, or if it's an aromatic vs non. The only consistent thing seems to be if burley is present. Many english blends don't leave me with this issue. Any idea if it really could be the burley and, if so, is there a way to fix the issue? Thanks. - DonListener Feedback:

Hey Beau and JD, found you guys a few months back and I can't stop listening, I'm finding every episode a breath of fresh air in my otherwise dull life here in Japan. I have a question regarding cellaring tobacco in warmer climates such as Japan. I put my tobaccos in glass mason jars, but unfortunately as my air conditioning is not running all the time every square inch of my house becomes really warm, even my dark cupboards out of the way. Mitchell Chambers - Hi Beau & JD, I am a new listener who discovered the CSR podcast about a week ago. I've been a pipe smoker for almost a year now and today I signed up for your patreon at the listener level. Thank you both for so many incredible podcasts. I have been bingeing some older episodes and today I found myself getting quite emotional while listening to the episode on the soldier and sailor archetypes. It made me thinking of all the WW2 vets that I went to church with when I was a kid. Sadly, they've all passed on now. In the show you mentioned the famous Marine, Alabamian, and pipe smoker, Dr. Eugene Sledge, who was my granparent's neighbor at one time. Dr. Sledge taught biology at the university in my hometown of Montevallo, Alabama. He died when I was still quite young. But I've been told he was a private man who was often seen smoking his pipe and bird watching. Thank you both for the incredible work.Jeremy Dukes - I hope you both had a wonderful holiday season with your families. Looking back on all the new-style-format shows in ‘22, I have to say I was pleasantly surprised at how well they fit with the tone of the show itself. I often listen to Country Squire Radio while working in the woodshop, and I found the intimacy of the episodes felt similar to when friends are over shooting-the-breeze with me while I pine away on some project. In fact, a couple of the “Father to Father” episodes were so poignant, I stopped whatever I was working on, sat down with my pipe, and listened intently because I was connecting so well to the conversation as a young(ish) father myself. Love what you guys do and appreciate you both for doing it.Hello Beau and Master Jon David, I hope you guys are doing well. I would like to know your take on pipe smoking while eating. As a predominantly evening pipe smoker myself, this is the time of the day when my wife and I sit down to nibble some food and enjoy a glass of wine or beer while talking about our day. This moment of interaction and relaxation seems perfect for a nice bowl of tobacco. However, by this time, I am already hungry and need to eat something. At first, I avoided ‘pairing’ pipe tobacco and food but, as time went by, I kind of got used to it. Now, I do not mind smoking my pipe while eating. Of course, I do not do it Hobbit-in-fallen-Isengard style, but rather keep altering between eating, drinking, and smoking. Well, I hope I am not committing any heresy here, but that is how things typically go for me. LOL And I would not give up this moment of partnership and communion with my wife for nothing in this world. Love the show. Love you guys (if I am allowed to say that). Keep up the good work. Cheers from Brazil, Gerson FernanDINO (let’s see if Beau gets my surname right this time) LOL

Listener Feedback:(Jim Friedemann) Hello Beau and Jon David, It’s been a while since I’ve emailed you guys. I love your podcast and look forward to it each Wednesday. You mentioned in this week’s episode (David Foster Wallace’s 2005 Kenyon College Commencement Address) how everyone worships something, even if they don’t recognize it as worship. I loved your discussion around this. It got me thinking… there have been times when I’ve allowed pipe smoking to become an idol. I’ve had to watch how much I focus on it during the day. It’s so easy to muse on “what blend am I going to try today” or “I wonder if I’ll get the winning eBay bid on that Castello” or “I wonder if I could find any Esoterica on TurboTin today.” And if that wasn’t enough there’s always the pipe smoking forums, websites, podcasts, pipe clubs, publications, etc. out there that can easily eat up so much of my focus during the day. I’ve found that anything that competes with my attention to and affection for the Lord and others should always be suspect. Even good things like our amazing hobby can become an idol if we allow it. Any way, you may not want to read this on a pipe smoking podcast but it’s something I think is important for living a balanced, healthy and purposeful life. I so appreciate your perspective and voice in the pipe smoking community. Keep up the great work, guys!! -jfreedy

I didn’t enjoy the taste of the stem end charring the first few smokes. So I drilled it out and put in a pipe mortar composed of activated charcoal, salt, plaster of Paris, and water as a binder. I then shaped the mortar to make the draft hole open in the middle per the advise you’ve given on what makes a pipe smoke well. The result is really good, but it does take some work and patience. Ben Straughan - Beau, You are not alone in your interest with all things piratical and nautical. I love taking my Old Dominion clay pipe from Missouri Meerschaum to the annual Piratefest that’s held where I live because what’s a pirate without his pipe? My pirate name is Lobster Pot Larry and my fiancée goes by the name Tinker the Terrible. I do this in addition to practicing axe and sword combat which I get to take to renaissance/medieval/pirate fairs along with some friends of mine. I was curious, does Captain Jorvik still sail the Sea of Thieves? I’d be honoured to serve as a part of your crew and should you be in need of a new voice aboard the Banshee’s Blade or anywhere else, I would be delighted to help however I can. I went to school for and have been working on the radio for 6 years in addition to doing voice overs and screen/stage acting. Thank you for your time and I hope you have a wonderful day. Kind regards from Southern Ontario, Canada - Ben S

Pipe Question: I really enjoy listening to Country Squire Radio. I am sitting here watching Bilbo smoke his pipe at the beginning of “The Hobbit”. It made me think of a question. Some of us like vintage tobacco. What are the oldest, original, blends still being produced today? By family, like Virginias, Vapers, Balkan, etc.? Thanks to both of you for a wonderful virtual pipe club! - Ryan Miller

(Kane) Good Evening Gents, I’m currently smoking Northwest Trek out of my Missouri Meerschaum up here in good ol Peoria, Illinois. I must say that this blend is maybe my new favorite. I was hoping you could lead to some similar blends so to add to my collection. Also, it inspired me to go Squire Select on this but in reverse order. I created a cocktail that I think pairs well with the cocktail. It’s kind of the Frankenstein mix between a Black Manhattan and a Brooklyn with some coffee flavors added in.
2 oz FEW Cold Cut Bourbon
1 oz Amaro Averna
1/4 oz Maraschino Liqueur
1/4 oz Mr Black Coffee Liqueur
1 dash orange bitters
I appreciate all that you guys do as you’ve been a integral part of my pipe smoking journey. Keep up the good work. - Kane

Dear Beau and Jon David, Earlier today I ordered a fifth of Cedar Ridge Bourbon and had it sent to the Squire, and I wanted to let you guys know a little bit about it. Whether or not you decide to include it in a future Squire Select, I wanted to share a little bit of Iowa with you. Iowa is one of my homes (which has also included Oklahoma, northeast Italy, Chicago, and Ethiopia), and, if I’m being honest, I am surprised at how I’ve come to love and appreciate the people and the land as much as I do. It is truly a great place to raise a family. That said, although I have had this whiskey in a handful of mixed drinks at various restaurants, I hadn’t tried it straight until I ordered some for myself alongside my order for you guys. I’m told that it is the best whiskey made in Iowa, and that it wins awards nationally. I’m interested to hear your thoughts. Enjoy, and thanks for the community that you’ve cultivated at CSR. P.S. - Jon David, I wanted to thank you for your patience and your kindness as I stuttered and stammered in front of you at the pipe show. Such is my personality that, although I’m sure that you can both enjoy/appreciate and be irritated by folks coming up to you at events, all I can think is that I’m probably being a nuisance, which distracts me from what I’m saying (which, ironically, actually makes me more of a nuisance that if I didn’t worry about it!). I imagine that one of the more unexpected challenges of hosting a popular and long-running podcast is that folks (like me) can know quite a bit about you, and can feel like they do know you, while you, of course, know essentially nothing about them, and don’t know them at all. Anyway, I’m glad I got to meet you and thank you in person for how you and Beau have helped me over the last couple of years. Your brother in Christ, John

(From the other pipe smoking Steve) Hello JD and Bo,
I found the country squire store/and podcast about 6 months ago. I am slowly working my way through the country squire blends and have enjoyed them all. The 50th anniversary blend being my favorite so far.
I have really enjoyed and learned A LOT from the podcast. Its interesting that my pipe journey sounds a lot like others I've heard on the show. I bought my first basket pipe about twenty years ago and have put it down and picked it back up several times over the years.
It was my NEED to slow my mind down during meditation and prayer that brought me back to the pipe this last time. It was during a frustrating evening trying to connect with God on my back porch that the idea of 'the pipe' miraculously popped into my mind. I dont even know why because up to that point everytime I tried smoking it, it just ended in searing tung burn that lasted days. I give God the credit for turning me back to the pipe and slowing my mind down so I could start having some real conversations with him or sit in meditation and try to hear what he is trying to tell me. Also during this time I have of course been catching up on country squire radio. I started with the 2015 episodes and just now on 4-29-22 got caught up to the current one in Miami. You guys feel like family. It sounds like you are intentionally trying to keep that vibe while introducing new ideas for shows, after all one must change in order to grow. Excellent idea I hope you can do it...so far I love all of the ideas yall are putting on air. Be careful you dont let the show grow too big, you will never be able to downsize it. It will just start to implode on itself if you do lose the small town Jackson feel. FYI...I live in Nashville now but I am from just down the interstate from you guys, West Monroe Louisiana. There is nothing wrong with small town USA. A lot of days I wish I could be back there.Anyway I have a problem I need help with. For the past six months I've been listening to about a show a day, sometimes two. Mostly on the drive home in the evenings I can listen to a whole show and it makes me forget about the long drive. So I'm gonna need yall to crank out 1 show everyday now. As far as I know this is the only podcast in existence and it checks all the boxes for me! LOL!!!

Pipe Question:
(From Jeremy Dukes) Hey Beau and Jon David, Erin and I went out to do a trip in the Bourbon Trail last week for my birthday. I’d never been and I cannot praise it enough. All the tours we took were exquisite and informational. Plus, the tastings were amazing. Buffalo Trace (and more specifically Eagle Rare) is my favorite distiller and blend, and we were fortunate enough to tour their facilities. If you’ve never been, you must put it on your bucket list. Worth every hour of my trip many times over. My question though is this: during the tastings they gave us a small piece of chocolate for a palate cleanser, but our guide actually got us to take a bite of the chocolate and then a swig of Buffalo Trace. It was like I’d never tasted Buffalo Trace before! It enhanced so many flavors of the whiskey that I’d never recognized prior. So…the question…..would a tobacco blend with notes of chocolate (let’s say Polar Express) have a like affect on my palate when I drink a glass of whiskey? QFQ: (From Pastor Joda) So, my brothers, I present to you “Will it Pipe Tobacco?” The concept is simple, I present a list of flavor profiles and you debate whether or not it would fly as a tobacco blend. It’s not necessarily you dump proposed flavor on the tobacco, though that may be the “case(ing)”. But if there is a way to deliver the flavor with some other form of Tobacco Alchemy, then that is acceptable as well. I realize you may find this idea quite lame and place it directly in the trash folder, if so, no problemo. Will it pipe tobacco?

I’ll check out the “How It’s Made” you mentioned being on YouTube this evening. I look forward to being able to support the show financially, but until then I’ll continue to enjoy it like those free pipe cleaners in your shop!

You might know him by the names John Rackham, Jack Rackham, or simply Calico Jack, a pipe smoking pirate of history that I present to you as the world's first Millennial Pirate. Let me explain...
Country Squire Radio's 'Half Bowl Histories' series takes a look into the history, lore, and legacy of individuals, places, and events of interest that helped shape the world we know today for good and for ill. Here we get a chance to revisit some of the famous pipe smokers we’ve covered in the past and shift the focus from what they loved to who they were and the complexities of their lives.
Pipe Question - (From E) Hi! I love listening to your podcast, discovered it recently and it has been great. I had a question about blends like Early Morning pipe. I like this blend, but ultimately feel it would be better without the latakia. I don't mind a bit here and there, but I'm not a massive fan of latakia. I read somewhere that the blend used to be done without the latakia...by Dunhill, sometime a while ago. I don't know why they changed it, but it's left me craving the nice sweet, smooth flavors without that bit of smokiness. Would you be able to point me in the direction of something like E.M.P without L? Or failing that, if I was to try and mix it myself, what type of Virginia would I need with oriental leaf? Keep up the amazing work, love this resource. E

(From Scott McCrate) I loved the Jacques Cousteau episode, I was really hooked on his television show as a kid. I have to say you missed one of the best jokes and clues in The Life Aquatic, Cousteau's vessel was the Calypso, in Life Aquatic it was the Belafonte. Harry Belafonte was a famous Calypso singer! I love The Life Aquatic!
(From Watson) Beau and Jon David, I want you to know how much I enjoy the show and your dynamic as co-hosts. I think you two could talk about almost anything and it would be listenable based solely on your personalities. As a heavily accented southerner, I also appreciate listening to kindred voices speaking with so much knowledge on a subject. The reason I am contacting you is to recommend someone for the segment formerly known as "Hero of the Bowl." One of the biggest champions of the briar for me has always been Aldo Leopold. He is considered the father of wildlife ecology and was an accomplished writer. He was often photographed with a pipe and they were a constant companion of his while working in the field. Among his many accomplishments is the conceptualization of a "land ethic" which calls for ethical and sustainable use of natural resources. His most popular book, A Sand County Almanac, is a classic and among the first texts those of us studying Wildlife and Conservation read in college. It is certainly worth spending some time reading this book outdoors with a nice billiard early in the morning...quite possibly the very situation in which it was written. I recommend it as a text that many of your listeners may find interesting and I think they would appreciate learning more about Aldo Leopold himself. Thank you for so many great hours of content. You two (and Brian over at Pipes Magazine Radio Show) have unknowingly spent many hours on the road with me as I commute. My car's interior has assumed the scent of your Cherokee blend. Keep up the solid work on all fronts.... - Cheers, WatsonWed, 06 Jul 2022 - 397 - From The Library: The Miracle of Mindfulness

Pipe Question: (From MarkVV) Captain Jorvik and Jon David, Ahoy, fellas! I have a query for both of you! So often Beau is left high and dry on this so I wanted to ask something of him to be inclusive! Jon David. Do different types of tobacco leaf, for instance, bright leaf and red Virginias, age differently or faster than others? Or is it purely a question of sugar content in the leaf? Or both? Or something else? And Beau. If you really were Captain Jorvik of the Seven Seas, what tobacco would you envision your pirate-self smoking? It can be period appropriate or modern, like Country Squire Treasure Island. As always, I hope you both are well, as well as your dear families. Hope to cross paths soon. Your friend, Mark VV

Pipe Question - (From Kirk) Hey guys I'm a long time listener. Been pipe smoking for roughly 13 years and I started listening I think on your 3rd or 4th episode years ago. My question is, is there a certain temp where pipes should be stored? I have a large rack in my living room that is full and I'm looking at getting a couple more to store the pipes I don't smoke as often and will have to keep it in my basement, which is unfinished and cold in the winter and muggy in the summer. Just curious if anything would happen to my pipes that are stored there. Always enjoy your show. Kirk
QFQ - (From Pastor Joda) So here’s a twist for you. I’m thinking of the way you have relaunched some things this year, what about a deep thoughts version of QFQ? What advice would you give to your 23 year old self?

(From John) Gentlemen, I am, in fact, one of the listeners you've mentioned recently - I've been working to catch up on older episodes (selectively), and only in the last few days been listening to the most recent episodes as well.
I want to thank you for the work you're doing, as I've been enjoying it immensely. The recent Father to Father episode was outstanding. Thank you for being willing to put yourselves out there. I know that it encouraged and edified me, and I can't be the only one. As a 40 year-old father of four young boys (7, 6, 4, and 2), I relate to much of what you discussed. Please, please keep it up.
I'll try not to go overlong in telling about how I got into pipe smoking (and by all means, use what you like, if any, and cut what you like), but I bought my first pipe (a Szabo) in Budapest, Hungary, when I was on temporary duty as a Soldier and Officer in the U.S. Army (Veterinary Corps). I was stationed in Vicenza, Italy, and began collecting pipes at that time (in 2007). However, over time the pipes ended up in a box in the closet, and when we moved to Ethiopia in 2019 as members of Christian Veterinary Mission, the pipes stayed in storage here in the States. However, when we'd been in Ethiopia for about a month, I was invited into a theological social media group in which most of the guys smoked pipes, and I deeply regretted not bringing any pipes or tobacco with me. Then, in 2020, we had to leave Ethiopia due to COVID, and have been unable to return due to a subsequent civil war. I've taken a temporary research position at a veterinary school here in the States, and have been able to appreciate smoking a pipe again. Needless to say, if and when we're able to return to Ethiopia in the near future (God willing), I'll be taking as much pipe smoking materiel as my wife allows. One final note - a couple weeks back I was doing a much needed tobacco inventory, and I realized that, after Cornell & Diehl and Ken Byron Ventures, I have significantly more Country Squire tobacco than any other blender. You guys have great stuff across the board, but Cowboy Coffee is my go to smoke. My order of Whale Song is arriving today, and I can't wait. Once again: Keep up the great work! Pipe Question: Mr JD, I’ve been looking at a Missouri Meerschaum General. Since it has a deeper bowl, can I just stuff more tobacco in and smoke longer, or does the depth and larger amount of tobacco cause the bottom leaf to soak up more moisture, become soggier and counterproductive to a long smoke? Do you have any thoughts on straight vs bent for a longer, dryer smoke? On average, with my Peterson straight Bulldog, I’ll smoke Country Squire Seersucker (delicious by the way) about 45min till it goes out.
Also, I live in West Texas and the wind regularly sustains 20+mph, gusting into 40+, and I work outside. Is that expecting too much of a windcap to be effective or you think it’ll work? Seriously, thanks for being my virtual tobacconist since there’s NO pipe shop within 6 hours to me. Really excited for the new shows! Wanted to let you know how much your show has contributed to my enjoyment of smoking my pipes! The two biggest take-aways - the two things that have completely changed my enjoyment of pipes and pipe tobacco for the better are: 1) Tamp dat ash! - I always had trouble either keeping my pipe lit OR packing it too tightly. Now, because of your show, I have a Czech tool as part of my EDC - I can tamp and pick as needed to get the proper burn at all times! Thank you! 2)Pipe cleaner after every bowl - this has been a game changer! I used to have to deep-clean my pipes after just a few bowls - bristled pipe cleaners and whisky to really scrub the gunk out! Even had to do the salt method a couple of times! This had the effect of me not wanting to smoke, because I didn’t want to clean! …….Now, again - because of your show, I run a pipe cleaner through the stem and around the inside of the bowl after every smoke, and I just gotta say - this has made ALL the difference in the world!!! Armed with my tamp and pipe cleaner, I fear no pipe nor tobacco! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Fantastic show - as ever!

Pipe Question: (From Steve Dover) Hey guys - I have been on my pipe journey since November 2021 and have been playing catchup on past podcasts (love them all by the way). These podcasts are the perfect length to allow me to listen to a couple each day during my daily commute. I recently enjoyed episode #259 where you discussed the then recent acquisition of Peterson Pipes by Laudisi Distribution Group. I would be interested to get your opinion - almost 3 years post acquisition - as to how much has changed, and if it has been good or bad. In the episode, JD expressed a concern about the overall quality of their pipes. Since the acquisition are you seeing improvement? Also, I would be interested in knowing if they have improved their relationship and support of B&M's. Are there other things you were looking forward to seeing that have not developed yet? Thank you both for putting out a quality product that is as entertaining as it is educational. I can't wait to drive down to Jackson and visit The Country Squire. Hope to see you soon. God Bless,
Listener Feedback: (From Wes) I was listening to your “What it’s like to smoke a pipe” episode. The listener who wrote in about Jacques Cousteau reminded me of an anecdote… I’m a musician doing performance and education work but I’m also a hack instrument builder. I make strange kind of sculptural pieces that I then electrify with pickups as well as more common things like cigar box guitars. One of my influences is this train riding hobo composer from the 40’s named Harry Partsch. He made an orchestra worth of his own musical instrument inventions favoring microtonal music. Harry was a pipe smoker, several of his albums show him photographed with his pipe. So, I was at my local record shop and I picked up a record of his and when I got home there was an inscription inside in his handwriting dedicating the record to none other than Jacques Cousteau! I’ve looked up his signature and other copies of the record to see if it was real and it appears to be. I try to imagine the conversation between these two explorers, one of the sea and one of sound, over a pipe. Anyway, maybe another pipe smoker for you all to explore and consider. He led a wild life.

Listener Feedback: (From Brian) Hey guys! You addressed a question of mine on air recently where I asked about what goes into the naming of blends. Jon David talked about how it was often a very personal process. I was struck when I saw Whale Song appear on the Country Squire website. The name didn't immediately resonate with me, until I read the description. When I realized it was a limited edition made up of McClelland ingredients and that it was a Virginia-Perique (which I know to be among Jon David's favorite styles of blends), I began to realize what the name really meant. Whale Song. Not only evocative of that iconic crested whale image on the cover of so many McClelland tins, but also suggestive of the barely audible song whales use to mourn the loss of family members. This is representative of what a blend name can be. Simple, poetic, like a haiku.

Pipe Question: (From Joel) Hey guys! First off - I LOVE the “Father to Father” series! - especially the most recent one. Thanks for being honest and vulnerable and telling it how it is for all of us dads! Next - I bought a nice pipe rack from a seller on eBay, and it came with a bunch of pipes. Two of these are EA Carey “Magic inch” pipes. They have a perforated area on the stem that lets in cool air - and they take a “papyrate” paper filter. It’s really strange, but I have to say - both of these pipes smoke really well! After I cleaned them up and sterilized them, I have really enjoyed them. Just wondered if Jon David had any experience with these pipes. Any road - as always - absolutely love your podcast! Like riding around with two good friends! Thank you!

I've gotten several orders from The Country Squire and I always appreciate the hand-written note, but today's delivery was truly exceptional. The accompanying card with the tasting notes, pairings from Tea, to Coffee, to Cocktails was really helpful and a next level touch. Congrats to Quinn. I purchased enough to smoke now with some to cellar, and I can't wait to enjoy this. As you know, we have been teasing out a very precious item that will be announced later this week on the podcast but we wanted to give you all here first access! We have partnered with the amazingly talented and quality folks at Sylvan Forge Creations to bring you The Country Squire Ring!
The Country Squire ring is handcrafted from Italian briar (Bruyere) harvested by the world-reknowned artisan Mimmo! The honey-hued briar wood is outlined with elegant gold bands on either side, reminiscent of traditional pipe filigree. All inlayed into a beautiful, smooth black ceramic ring core. From ring crafter, woodworker, and pipe enthusiast Jeremy Dukes, The Country Squire Ring is a simple, sophisticated design that speaks volumes about the wearer. “A pipe is the fountain of contemplation, the source of pleasure, the companion of the wise..." This Maker's Exclusive (limited edition) ring was created in partnership with Country Squire Radio and is only available for a short time.
In the ring crafters own words: “The Country Squire ring becomes a way to bring the world and culture of our beloved hobby with us, and represents our community to others. It is a symbol of a common passion for pipe smoking and that bond. It does, in a small way, unite our community further, just as Country Squire Radio has done on a large scale. It is a piece of conversation AND representation. "When you smoke a pipe, you're making a statement", right? This ring furthers that statement.”
We are honored to partner with Sylvan Forge Creations as they bring 4 generations of woodworking behind them as well as a passion for bringing the peace, strength, and beauty of nature into a form we can take with us.
You’ll learn more about Jeremy Dukes, Sylvan Forge Creations, and the story behind the Country Squire Ring on this week’s episode of CSR but for now head over to the website and order yours today as they will only be available for a limited time. Also, they have ring sizing guides if you need assistance.
