โHi! I found out about Interview Academy through the podcast about a week before an interview at a really great organisation. I'm so glad because I'm not the best at prepping for Interviews and I get very nervous during them. This was also going to be my first job interview related to my recent bachelors degree that I went back to University for. With the course and lots of practicing of my best bits, I think I did quite well! It was probably my best interview ever and the interviews were even nodding their heads and smiling at some points. There were 1 or 2 unexpected questions that threw me off but I think I did ok with them. I listened to your pre and post interview podcast episodes and they helped so much too! No matter what happens, this was great interview practice for me and it increased my confidence! I also developed awesome best bits that will be invaluable as I interview for similar positions to break into a new industry!"

"Hey Emma and Sarah! I am so grateful for your podcast, listening to you two really helped me out when I needed it most! I was let go from my job just a month before my first child was born, and I was absolutely distraught. I was able to receive unemployment checks for a few months, but things weren't going well in my job search. Then, after 3 months of applying, I finally landed an interview, but I had never worked in that field and had no idea how to prepare. I looked up interview tips on Spotify, and found your podcast! It really boosted my confidence and I gave a great interview! Unfortunately, I was not selected for that job but I didn't let that get me down. I redoubled my efforts and kept to it. After a few more interviews, and a few more weeks ticking down to the end of my unemployment checks, I finally landed a job that paid well enough for my family's needs. The problem was that I had no interest in that field and they wanted me to live, breathe, and dream about the job. After the first week, I knew that I wasn't cut out for the job. It was very disheartening but I went back to the job search. I found a job that had just been posted by a company I had been interested in for years but had never found an opportunity to apply. I applied for the job on a Friday and checked back on the online application Monday morning. My heart dropped when it said "Not Selected by Employer" but I couldn't stop thinking about it all day. This next part felt pretty ballsy, but listening to your podcast gave me the confidence to believe in myself. After work, I drove down to the office of the place I applied and talked to the person at the front desk about how I had just applied and how interested I was in the work they do. The person at the desk had me wait a moment while they got someone for me to talk to and came back with the OWNER OF THE COMPANY! He did an impromptu first interview right there and scheduled me for a follow-up interview later that week. I nailed the follow-up and got a job offer the next day! I offered a two-week notice at the job I had just started, but since I was so new they let me decide if I wanted to stay the two weeks or not. I decided not to and started my new job the next day! I love my new job, and am so happy and proud of myself for having the confidence to go out and get what I want! Thank you SO MUCH for helping me get here! I wouldn't have done it without you!"

Thu, 18 Apr 2024 - 16min - 134 - Why we're not using the word 'REJECTED' in the job search anymore!
The job search process can be brutal and getting knocked back repeatedly can really affect your self esteem. But what if the language you're using is only making things worse and fueling a confidence spiral? Our words are SO powerful!
In this weekโs episode, Emma and Sarah delve into the true definition of the word 'rejected' and why we are officially banning our listeners from using it. It's time to ditch the negative self talk and reframe your mindset.
๐ Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to B who bought us 7 coffees!
"Emma and Sarah, I cannot thank you enough for all the ways that youโve helped me throughout one of the most challenging seasons of my life! I struggle with perfectionismโanxiously trying to avoid (what I perceive as) failure. Because you gals are honest, experienced, humble, fun-loving, and just flat out in touch with reality, you helped me stop disqualifying myself, start affirming my skills and experience, start internalising that I could learn new things, and stop trying to have absolutely everything figured out. Each job search has been pretty stressful for me, but my most recent one was especially overwhelming. I had just graduated from seminary; I didnโt know what kinds of jobs would be a viable fit for me (financially and otherwise); my wife and I were new home-owners and pregnant with our first child; AND my wife felt called to be a stay-at-home mom. About three months into my job search, a really exciting job popped up that my wife told me Iโd be perfect at. I had seen the same job posting, but had written it off because I was fixating on the few qualifications that I didnโt have (maybe 10-20% of them) and ignoring the qualifications I did have (definitely 80%, no exaggeration). At this point in my job search I was convinced Iโd have to take a job I hated in order to provide for my family, so I stubbornly focused on preparing for other jobs that were already on my radar instead of letting myself hope about this exciting one. But throughout pursuing those other jobs, I listened to more and more of your episodes, and they really started to help me see my patterns and name them for what they were: unhealthy, lacking compassion, ignoring my story, and out-of-touch with reality. Moreover, your wisdom helped me make the most out of a ridiculous interview process (at least 6 hours total!) with an organisation I came to observe as toxic; and your realistic optimism helped me be bounce back from that and be confident, honest, and prepared while applying for the exciting job my wife mentioned! Your generous breadth of content not only helped me nail the application and interview, AND GET THE JOB(!!), it also helped me transition into this new role with confidence and direction during the onboarding period! Iโve implemented many of your tips for after you get the job and my supervisors are quite impressedโif my supervisors were Australian, theyโd describe me as โkeenโ (one of my fav words that you guys use). I feel like I owe you guys the whole first year of my salary lol, but my wife said we canโt afford that, so weโll just stick with some coffees for now. Thanks again for being such a fun and faithful blessing to me and so many others. Blessings to you both on your journeys! ๐"

Thu, 11 Apr 2024 - 20min - 133 - Why you might be getting GHOSTED!
We don't endorse ghosting, butttttt we're not going to pretend it doesn't happen in the real world. ๐ป
Itโs the most frustrating and heartbreaking part of a job search. You donโt know whether youโre still in the running, or whether you werenโt the right fit.
In this episode, Sarah and Emma discuss what might be going on behind the scenes and what to do about it. Hint: (nothing).

"Hello you wonderful, talented humans! Where do I even start Sarah and Emma? I stumbled (literally, I was out running in the dark...) across your podcast while in a blind panic after being invited for a second interview. I had really lost my confidence after the previous job I applied for invited me for SIX, yes SIX interviews, only to let me down in the last round. I was gutted and really disheartened, so when this interview rolled around, I was determined to make this job mine, I just didn't know how! After absolutely BINGEING, your podcast I felt my confidence growing. The storytelling technique was incredible and I found myself remembering all of my blindingly good best bits! Skip forward to interview day, I listened to the 'hype up' episode in the car on the way, I accepted the water, I sat up straight and yes, my notebook was front and centre... As the interview started, I instantly felt relaxed and that I had everything I needed to weave my stories into my answers. When it came to questions at the end, I remembered to ask one to each member of the panel, including the HR Manager (thanks for THAT episode ladies) and 1.5 hrs later they proceeded to tour me around the building and offer me the job ON THE SPOT! I am a sports marketer living in rural Switzerland so jobs like this don't come around too often. I honestly COULD NOT have done it without you Sarah and Emma. The confidence you gave was incredible but above all, you helped me feel less alone. Being on the job search is such a lonely and isolating process but you helped to normalise it and above all, you made me laugh. I can't thank you enough and have already passed you on to a couple of friends who are already hooked!ย "

Thu, 04 Apr 2024 - 23min - 132 - How to talk about THAT thing you're stressing about!
Here at Interview Boss, we believe it's important to own your own career story - even the not so great parts! But we've noticed people are SO worried about doing this, out of a fear of highlighting any potential pitfalls.
Hundreds of people have DM'd us over the years asking how they can explain their specific, sometimes 'tricky' situation when applying for jobs.
In this week's episode, we give REAL examples of how to address common job-seeker conundrums including taking time off due to a health condition, moving around a lot as a military partner, marriage breakdown, being fired from your last job and having dabbled in many different industries.
We explain how you CAN share these seemingly challenging details, while crafting a narrative that showcases your strengths. Even if we don't cover your exact scenario in this episode, after listening, you'll understand how to address the situation authentically!
๐ Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Martina who bought us 5 coffees!
"Greetings from Germany!ย I quit my PhD in economics a couple months ago after two years of feeling anxious, stuck and just absolutely miserable. Having only one year of work experience prior to starting the PhD, the relief of leaving academia was quickly replaced by absolute panic about my career prospects. I felt like I wasted the previous years and regressed both in terms of motivation and abilities. After a few meltdowns on my friend Rachel's couch, she recommended I listen to your podcast. She thought it would help me structure my job search and give me ideas how to change the narrative around my experience to become an attractive candidate on the job market. Just a few episodes in, my confidence soared! Working on my best bits, I realised I grew and learned so much in the years I spent in research! Using your guidance, I found a way to showcase both my technical and soft skills, and talk about my prior experience in a way that is appreciated in the private sector. Even more helpful were your tips on how to communicate honestly and convincingly about the desire to switch careers. Now, four months after leaving my previous position, I got the perfect job in an energy consultancy, where I will be working on energy transformation and decarbonisation in Eastern Europe! I am so happy my friend pointed me out to your podcast! I wouldnโt have managed without your wisdom and support. I am so thankful to you and will not stop promoting the podcast to literally every person who as much as thinks about switching jobs. You are doing such an awesome job!!ย Cheers and sooooo many thanks. PS: I also listened to your podcast so much, that my accent apparently changed and I now get regularly asked if I used to live in Australia."

Thu, 21 Mar 2024 - 36min - 131 - How to set your referees up for success!
We all know it's important to keep your referees in the loop when you're progressing through interviews so they aren't caught off guard when the phone rings. But what if there's MORE you could do to set them up for success and ensure they give you a GLOWING, detailed review?
Our Aunty Sue shared this tried and tested hack with us, and we thought it was WAY too good to gatekeep.
In this week's episode, we talk about how you can use the last step in the recruitment process to really STAND out and land that offer.
๐ Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Kirsty who bought us a coffee! Here's a snippet of what she had to say:
"Hi Emma and Sarah, firstly thank you so much for your podcast and what you do! I believe I am a living, breathing, and walking existence of your podcast advice. I found you in December 2023. I was receiving multiple job interviews but I could never nail an interview and would always finish them feeling sad and disappointed that I wasnโt able to articulate myself. I searched up 'interview' in Spotify on my daily walk and lo and behold, there you guys were. At this point, I did not realise my whole life was about to change. I became obsessed with listening to you guys because I felt such a change in my confidence. Fast forward to the end of Feb 2024 and I FINALLY landed myself a job at NSW Health as a health promotion officer, in an area I am so passionate about and where there is so much career progression/security in the company. Although the job I got isnโt end game and wasnโt my โdream jobโ, I realised itโs a stepping stone and there is no rush. I have my whole life to get to where I want to be and just to enjoy the process. My advice for others is to drop the 'dream job' mentality, it isnโt helpful. Last thing, KEEP ON BELIEVING IN YOURSELF and work on those areas where you think youโre failing and I promise you will get there. "

Thu, 14 Mar 2024 - 26min - 130 - Struggling to land a remote job? Here's why it's getting harder!
If there's one thing we can thank COVID for - it's normalising working from home! During the pandemic, most companies had no choice but to allow employees to work remotely and the amount of remote jobs being advertised skyrocketed! But as we transition into the recovery phase of the pandemic, companies are increasingly ordering their workers back into the office - at least on a part time basis.
Unfortunately this means remote jobs have become EXTREMELY competitive!
In this week's episode, Sarah and Emma talk about why your resume will be the most important part of the application process and what jobs and industries are more likely to offer remote work. We also explain why considering a hybrid role might be a great plan B.

"I just came out of my interview and I nailed it! I'm not so worried about whether I get the job or not, I'm just so happy that I did a good interview! I cannot begin to express how much you helped me. I am a chronic procrastinator but this time I found your podcast and listened to it while I was avoiding the task at hand. I went interview outfit shopping, I cleaned my house and went for runs, the whole time listening to you. All of your advice was spot on, you really have something special. Much love from Ireland!

Thu, 07 Mar 2024 - 24min - 129 - We give you permission to be HONEST about what your old job was REALLY like!
If you're interviewing after leaving a shitty job, there's a good chance you've been told that you should 'never talk bad about a previous job or employer.' It's career advice that's been passed down through generations, and while it has merit - we're worried our listeners are taking the advice TOO seriously and are scared to share any honest thoughts about previous jobs in interviews.
In this week's episode, Emma and Sarah give you permission to talk 'bad' about previous employers.
We help you understand the difference between playing the blame game/venting VERSUS painting an accurate picture of why you left, to help your interviewer understand how you got here, and what you'll be looking to AVOID in this new job.
We give you REAL examples of how you can tell the truth about awful situations, without harping on.

"Y'ALL IT WENT SO WELL. I was very nervous going into it, and was beating myself up a bit for not spending enough time in the course as prep, but I am very, very happy with how the interview went! I felt like my strengths (building rapport with interviewers) were emphasized even more, I felt so confident with my career story response, and felt like I had the examples I needed and the structured I needed to answer everything they asked. I also feel like I got a good sense for the company and the team I would be working with, and am even more excited about the role. Fingers crossed!!!"

"Emma and Sarah, Iโve been farming professionally for the past five years and have been struggling to get out of the field (pun not intended) and into something with more stability for a while. I found yโallโs podcast in September and it totally changed my approach to job interviews. I donโt come naturally to bragging about myself, so I find interviews hard. Between that, trying to change fields, and general disrespect for farmers and blue collar workers as a whole, I was having trouble landing anything. Finally, after months of applying and interviewing, I was offered and accepted a non-profit job Iโm really excited about! The environment seems great and it offers the stability Iโve been looking for. Also, you wouldnโt believe how thrilled I am to not have to work outside in all kinds of weather anymore! Thu, 22 Feb 2024 - 1h 00min - 127 - Interview Coaching On Demand
This week we have a VERY exciting announcement to share with you.
After conducting HUNDREDS of interview coaching sessions, and getting incredible results Sarah is an expert in helping people prepare for job interviews.
BUT unfortunately she's only one gal, living in an aussie time zone, who works a day job, and all of that means she can't help everyone 1:1 ๐ข
ENTER: Interview Academy ๐
For over a year, Sarah has been working on turning ALL the lessons from every coaching session into an on-demand step by step interview prep course.
In this week's episode Emma and Sarah talk about the course, what you can expect, and how to work out if it's right for you!
๐ Shoot Your Shot - Lizzy who bought us 5 coffees! "Hi Emma and Sarah! Thank you so much for your podcast, it has truly helped me feel more hopeful and positive in my job search. In June of 2023, I was supposed to get a promotion at my job. Unfortunately, it fell through and I was devastated. I went through a divorce previously and was slowly running out of my savings to supplement my income. I really needed that money. Your podcast gave me the courage to seek out a career counselor, apply to jobs, and interview. I made it to the 3rd round interviews with two different organisations and each time they went with another candidate. One of the organisations had me interview with a panel (partly in person and partly virtual), complete a report, and provide a presentation. That one was so demanding and my anxiety would have been ridiculously unmanageable if it wasn't for your support. Although I didn't get the jobs, their feedback was valuable and one of the orgs asked me to apply for upcoming jobs they will be opening. I still haven't found a job and its January 2024. It has been really tough but I am still putting myself out there. I have found other ways to supplement my income in the mean time but it has been so challenging as I also struggle with chronic health conditions. Without your help, I would be struggling so much more. Job searching can be so difficult and when I feel like I just can't apply to another job, I listen to your podcast and it helps. Thank you for all your support, advice and inspiration. I hope that soon I will be able to write you with the news that I have a new job. In the meantime, I will keep trying! I know the right job for me is out there."

๐ Shoot Your Shot - Lara who bought us 5 coffees! "Hi Sarah and Emma. I was an avid Interview Boss podcast listener struggling to cut through during my job search. After a coaching session with Sarah and her diagnosis of a convoluted CV, things started to look up. I ended up with 3 job offers in one week. I made a point of asking every company 'why did you choose to shortlist my CV?' Each time they said it was your cover letter that gave us insight into your personality and the way your CV was written gave us great insights into your experience. That is a nod to Interview Boss as I followed your instructions exactly. I just can't thank you enough for your podcast and coaching sessions. All of the subjects in your podcast episodes are bang-on topics for job seekers and are delivered in an upbeat but professional way. When job-searching becomes a longer than expected process, it can be so taxing, but your podcast made it bearable and even inspiring. The behind-the-scenes insights into the recruitment process have been so valuable and I know have a newfound respect for HR/recruitment professionals. I will be recommending your podcast and coaching sessions to everyone I know searching for a new role. Please keep doing what you are doing it makes such a difference in people's lives! I was seriously more excited to tell you two than I was my own mom when I got the offer. After a few years of contract jobs and freelancing I was starting my first real job search in April with no idea where to begin. Your podcast guided me through every step of the way, starting all the way at crafting my resume and cover letter, to my first interviews, thank you emails, follow up emails, best bits and even support when twice I didn't get the job after making it to the final round. You are changing lives across the globe, for me all the way over in New York City. You helped take an overwhelming, daunting, and emotionally exhausting process into something manageable. Last month I even had a friend who was up for a promotion and I sent him episodes and helped him craft his best bits teaching him what you taught me and no surprises - he got it! What you have created is a priceless resource and the two of you have become a pivotal part of my career story. I will miss hearing your Aussie accents - the way you say resume scratches my brain. I will be back again in April when I will be up for a raise. Until then - THANK YOU, THANK YOU THANK YOU and I love you!! <3"

No matter how prepared you are heading into a job interview, it's almost inevitable you're going to feel a bit nervous, especially when it comes to being put on the spot! This anxiety can often be one of the biggest barriers to doing yourself justice in an interview.

Thu, 14 Dec 2023 - 55min - 121 - Our thoughts on Google's new FREE interview practice tool
In case you missed it, Google has released a new free interview warm up tool that allows you to 'practice key questions, get insight about your answers, and get more comfortable interviewing.' But is it endorsed by Sarah & Emma?
In this weekโs episode, we discuss the tools strengths, weaknesses, and who is most likely to benefit (hint - certain industries will find it MUCH more valuable)!
๐ Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Colton who bought us 10 coffees! "Thank you for all your support through the interview process. I stumbled upon your profile because I was trying to find a way not to feel guilty when going to the gym instead of applying to jobs. Sometimes I just didn't have the strength to keep applying to jobs but I could turn on your podcast so I could keep moving the needle forward. What I didn't realise is that over the months of listening to just about every possible episode, I was ready for the interview process and could go forward confidently. I just got done with 6 rounds of interviews for one job and am one of the final two being considered for the position. I know how to follow up, knew what to listen to before and after, how decisions are made behind the scenes, the psychology tips and tricks, dealing with the mental anguish of the job search. I'm so grateful for you and just know that every time I was feeling anxious or in my head, your podcast brought me back to the present. Thank you, Colton."

Fri, 01 Dec 2023 - 28min - 120 - 70+ ideas for questions to ask at the end
In most cases the last part of your interview will be a chance for YOU to ask the questions. Itโs a chance to reveal your curiosity about the company and the role.ย
In this weekโs episode Sarah and Emma are picking out some of their favourite questions that go beyond the basics of our last episode. We'll discuss the art of being genuinely interested, turning the tables by 'interviewing' the interviewer, and why you shouldnโt be looking to โstand outโ with your questions.
Plus, don't miss out on our free download โ a spreadsheet packed with question ideas to have at your fingertips!
๐ Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Bec โThank you ladies so much!!!! I just walked out of my interview and feel amazing. I had a session with Sarah on Wednesday and we were certain they weren't going to ask me a "tell me about yourself" question being a government job, but I'd prepared it anyway AND THEY ASKED!!! I had to come up with one answer that didn't fit the best bits I'd prepared, but I was able to stick to the structure of story, what I did, what was the result and weave in a different story. Just want to say too that I thought this was my "dream job" but after listening to your "take your dream job off the pedestal" episode, my preparation changed completely and I've left the interview room feeling like I did the best I could do, if I dont get this I'll use it all for the next opportunity. Thats why I'm sending this now and not after I've heard if I got the job, because the result doesn't even feel like it matters now.โ

Mon, 27 Nov 2023 - 30min - 119 - How to level up your interview answers: why the 'situation' matters most!
When answering behavioral interview questions, it's important to emphasize what you did to respond to the problem, and what the impact was. But chances are, you aren't describing the initial 'situation' in enough detail!
In this weeks episode, Emma and Sarah explain how you can sell yourself short if you gloss over how difficult or complex the situation or problem actually was.
We use real life examples to show you how providing enough context can set you up for a compelling narrative that will have your interviewer on the edge of their seat!

Iโve been struggling to get an offer over the past two years that Iโve been on and off job hunting. But this time, I knew this was the perfect job for me and I had to be 100% prepared. I searched for podcasts to help me and thatโs when I found you lovely ladies! I have never felt more prepared, confident, and calm going into an interview (5 one on one conversations!!!) I left each one feeling amazing and listening to your before and after episodes gave me that extra boost of confidence and reassurance I needed. We get it - finding a job that aligns with your skills and aspirations is exciting. But when the salary range falls short, it's natural to feel a bit torn. ๐ Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Yischa โHi ladies! I happened upon an internal job opportunity with my company that would be a completely different path and in a moment of temporary insanity, decided to toss my hat in the ring. I created a resume (I grew into my current role from a very entry level position over the past 12 years) and hit submit. When I received a callback for an interview I panicked. How and when do you break the news to your boss that you're ready to spread your wings? Especially when you've been part of a tight-knit team in a small business for years, it's a decision that carries a lot of weight (and feelings of guilt!).ย
In this weekโs episode Sarah and Emma debate the pros and cons of opening up to your boss before you officially resign, and talk about how you can end up with a win-win. We talk timing, things to consider, and how to actually have the chat. If youโre at a crossroads, this episode is for you!
๐ Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Mimi โAfter bombing an interview for a job I thought was ideal I began scouring the internet for a resource to prepare for interviews and I found you! I never prepared for an interview before and somehow still got the job. Not anymore it seemed.. Sooo I listened to almost all the episodes about interviews and about rejection and prepared for an interview for what could be my dream job.: picked an outfit, all my "good bits", practiced, and wroteย down tons of questions for "do you have any questions for me?" (Which I blanked on last time). They actually remembered what I asked in this part which was great (Where do you see the company going in the future?) Over 200 applicants applied for this position! ๐ Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to James โGโday ladies! Thanks for your podcast. I was not in a good place last Saturday and not confident in my notes for the interview Tuesday. I searched Spotify for an interview podcast and came across your one about preparing notes a few days in advance. Your tip about listing your achievements and then making the job profile fit them was exactly what I needed to hear. That worked for me like magic! I also listened to your podcast just before my interview and that again really helped. You have nice soothing voices and good sense of humours. I also like how you donโt just make your podcast for women - as a bloke I really appreciated all the advice and I only listened to 2 of your podcasts. Thanks very much. Jamesโ

๐ Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Kate โHi Sarah and Emma, you guys had no idea how much you've helped me in this job search! Before listening to your podcasts, I couldn't even know how to answer "Tell me about yourself". And because of that, I rarely passed the 1st round of interviews. I was scared to tell them where I'm from because my 1st language isn't English and my job is in the legal field. I simply did not know about myself and never reflected on why I wanted to be in this field. But you guys appeared in my life like ANGELS!!! After listening to your podcasts religiously, and I meant RELIGIOUSLY. It makes so much sense why I was so bad at interviewing. I decided to attend a coaching session with Sarah. And OMG was that the best investment I've ever made in myself!!! After the coaching session, I CONSISTENTLY made it to the final rounds of all the jobs that I applied. And I'm happy to share that I finally got an offer!! They offer $20K more than I currently make, a hybrid working schedule and much better benefits. I cannot do this without your help. So you didnโt get the job. Itโs disappointing, puzzling, and infuriating and you just CRAVE a bit of closure - if only you knew what it was that lost you the job, so you could fix it!
In this weekโs episode, Sarah and Emma talk about the pros and cons of getting feedback after an interview process. We talk about whether you will get it, how to ask, and how to make sure itโs actually useful.
๐ Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Ruth โThank you Sarah and Emma for your incredible podcasts, content and coaching! After 4 months without work in my area following a redundancy, I have now landed a job at my dream company. I only discovered you in the last month or so and listening to your podcasts created an anchor through the dark times of job searching. It can truly start to feel so hard and erode your self esteem and sense of direction and I found you really helped me build myself back up. My advice for other listeners, listen to interview boss and also trust your gut. You are your own best expert on your skills and the industry you want to be in! I had a bunch of other companies and people telling me my cv mustnโt be good enough and there was no way I would get a job without their exact advice - Sarah and Emma are not like this! Thank you for giving gentle practical advice to make me shine without tearing me down or trying to convince me I donโt know anything about how to find a job. It sounds simple enough but there are lots of voices out there in the CV writing, career coaching game and you guys are so kind, approachable, wise and generous with your free podcasts and resources. I no doubt will continue to use everything I learnt (and continue to learn as a committed listener) through my career progression! Love Ruthโ

Thu, 12 Oct 2023 - 13min - 113 - So... tell us about yourself - Part 2
Itโs the kick off to almost every interview, and we KNOW from part 1 that storytelling is so important, but after hundreds of coaching sessions with people prepping for interviews, Sarah has learnt a thing or two about the common challenges people have with their career story.
In this weekโs episode, Sarah and Emma go into way more detail about your career story. What is it meant to do, what the common mistakes are, and the questions you can ask yourself to build a GREAT intro straight away.
๐ Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Julie โBuying you a round with my first new paycheck! I was starting to feel taken for granted at my old place; we were understaffed and I was nearly the last person in my department, while being kept on a temporary contract. Meanwhile I was concerned that a rocky employment history might mean a long and painful job search like I'd had in the past. I landed an interview for a job that would be a big step up and a 40% pay rise, and the morning of I found your podcast while looking for inspiration. I listened to an episode about 'best bits' and thank goodness I did. The interview was like nothing I'd experienced before, it was almost like a quiz - what are our main markets and how would you grow them, what support do we offer clients and how would you contribute etc. Thanks to preparing my 'best bits' I was ready to proactively showcase the things I wanted to talk about - and absolutely aced the interview, so much so that they offered me the job even though I had a pre-planned holiday during their busiest time of year. When I had my meeting with the VP in charge of my division she told me the interview panel raved about me afterward. Thank you both for your miracle-worker of a podcast!โ

Ever found yourself scrolling through job listings at a company you're eager to join, only to hesitate when you spot more than one role that piques your interest? Weโve heard the rumours and read the scare tactics - will this make you seem desperate or indecisive and turn off your potential employer?

Iโm a Brazilian living in Perth for the past 5 years and am trying to start my career here. I had almost given up due to all the pressure from learning the language, then my $$$ master's fees, working every single second available in Hospitality and cleaning, COVID, and being an international student. But, then I saw a recommendation for your podcast, and I binged all episodes and still listening back to them! I always recommend them to others who are looking for jobs. I havenโt scored my first job in the field yet, but I got 2 final interviews for the same weekโฆ Woohoo (this is for Emma ๐). Sincerely, I was nauseous, it had been 7 years since my last one. I followed the script. I had your voice in my ears until I arrived at the building (โListen to this RIGHT before your interviewโ), but not at the elevator, as I didnโt know if I needed to shoot my quick intro. I prepared like a BOSS!! I smiled, clenched my butt, used STAR methods, and took my notebook with my killer questions and some notes about the organisation and interviewers (checked beforehand on LinkedIn). I was planning to get a job first, and then send a few coffees, but it is better to guarantee the good content coming. Thanks, Emma and Sarah, you are awesome."

In the past it felt like recruiters and hiring managers everywhere would SHUDDER if they noticed even a month gap in your work experience. We were told we should NEVER leave a job without another to go to, and we should be ready to fully explain ourselves in an interview.
In the modern world, are resume gaps even a big deal anymore? We talk you through how to present things on your resume, and how to tackle the conversation at job interview stage.

Thu, 14 Sep 2023 - 24min - 109 - Why job security is overrated (and why you want CAREER security instead)
Job security isnโt what it used to be. Weโre no longer living in a world where you can expect to work for the same company for 30 years (and most of us probably wouldnโt want to!). We canโt control the economic environment, or the whims of our employer in going through a restructure, or changing employment conditions (hello return to office).
In this weekโs episode, Sarah and Emma define career security, and talk about why itโs WAY more important (and in your control) than job security. We then talk about how you can make sure youโre always working on your career security, not only when youโre job searching - a must listen for uncertain times!
๐ Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Lillian who bought us 5 coffees! โEmma and Sarah, I owe you my life! I was completely burnt out on my job search but still desperate to leave my really toxic work environment. I would listen to your podcast all day while I was at the office, and it totally helped me shift my mindset and get me feeling more positive and excited about my career change! And then I started getting requests for interviews!! I listened to the "before interview" episode literally three or four times before every interview I had. I went in feeling like a total badass and knowing they'd be lucky to have me join their team, and then I kept my nerves afterwards at bay with your "after interview" episode. Thanks to all your tips and motivation, I crushed all of my interviews and ended up accepting an offer that literally DOUBLED my salary! Thu, 07 Sep 2023 - 38min - 108 - Are you sabotaging your 'Tell Me About Yourself' answer by hiding something?
Imagine you're in an interview, confidently answering the typical "Tell Me About Yourself" question, but there's a catch - you're avoiding certain details like leaving your recent job, working for family, or not completing your degree. You might think you're steering clear of potential pitfalls, but are you actually sabotaging yourself in the process? In this episode, we're diving into the delicate art of sharing your career story authentically, addressing those often hidden aspects with confidence and grace.
In this weekโs episode, Sarah and Emma guide you through the labyrinth of interview storytelling. We'll explore the scenarios where it's better to address these hidden details and debunk the myth that avoidance equals success. By the end of this episode, you'll be armed with the tools to decide when and how to share those seemingly challenging details, while crafting a narrative that showcases your strengths.
๐ Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Tania who shouted us 5 coffees โA few coffees and a nice message won't come close to describing the appreciation I have for both of you, but I'll give it a(n espresso) shot - I'm a sucker for a good (or bad) pun โ. You would think that working in Talent Acquisition and HR for over 8 years that I may have all the tools and information needed to be a rockstar interviewee... wrong. Not only was I working in an extremely toxic work environment, but I also wanted to change career paths and felt completely stuck and pigeonholed in my area of expertise. This podcast gave me all the tools I needed throughout my interview process for a job I was REALLY excited about. I'm talking the prep work, I'm talking pre-interview pep talks, I'm talking butt clenching tricks, I'm talking follow-up emails... ALL. OF. IT. It came to a point where I would constantly be listening to your podcast at home, in the car, while working out, and my husband would hear the Aussie accent and say "oh you're listening to your Australian sisters again". Obsession would be an understatement and that's only because I learned SO much from you both and never felt more prepared for an interview process than I did after starting to listen to the Interview Boss podcast. After 4 interviews and a 30-minute presentation, I GOT THE JOB. A job outside of my historical expertise, I was able to prove how my skills and experience related to and would bring value to the role they were looking for (all thanks to you)! I landed the job last month and have been counting my blessings ever since. I seriously can't thank you both enough for this podcast, your warmth and friendliness, and selflessness making this podcast free for all users. ๐ Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Yannick โHey Emma and Sarah, My name is Yannick, and I'm a listener from London. I've been a fan of your podcast since 2021 when I was going through an internal promotion to become a supervisor at my current company. I got that promotion, and I've continued to listen to your podcast ever since. I love your podcast because you're both so authentic, engaging, and funny. I've often found myself smiling while listening to you, even when I'm doing something else, like grocery shopping. Recently, there was another promotion opportunity for a few manager positions. I decided to apply, and the interview process was quite intense. It involved an AI chat interview called Sopia.ai (which you might want to consider covering on your podcast), a company knowledge test, and a final interview with people. I used all of the techniques and tips that I've learned from you, and I hope I have done you both proud. At the same time, I've been mentoring Denis, who is on my team and is also going for the supervisor position. I introduced him to your podcast, and he loves it. He even said that you're his favorite two sisters in the whole world. Denis and I have been supporting each other throughout the interview process, and we both just finished our final interviews this week. On behalf of Denis and myself, I want to thank you for everything that you're doing to inspire millions of people to gain the knowledge and confidence to go for their dream jobs. Regardless of the outcome of our interviews, we're both very grateful for your help. Thank you again, Yannickโ

I started job searching in local government a month ago and I was so nervous as I have never had a real interview and I thought I may get stuck in my job forever! I found your podcast and listened to your episodes in the car, when i was working out, in the shower, anywhere I could. I prepped like a boss and the interviewer told me it would be awhile to sift through the applicants as it was a highly competitive position so expect it to be weeks..... the same day they were contacting my referees and the next day I was given a preferred candidate offer!!! OMG thank you so much for the confidence boost and all your help. PS the notebook saved my life and I have shared the butt clench tip with all my friends :)โ

๐ Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Bori who bought us FIVE coffees! โHello Emma & Sarah Thank you SO much for your invaluable advice through this podcast. You two have now officially helped both me and my partner land our dream jobs! I discovered your podcast over a year ago, just before moving to Australia, when I was in the process of remotely interviewing for a job in Sydney. Iโve listened to all of the episodes and thanks to all your wisdom, practical tips and positive energy I secured a job even before landing in Aus. This was almost a year ago, so a very overdue thank you! Then about 1 month ago my partner decided to look for a new job, and I immediately got him hooked on your podcast too. He got 2 interviews lined up by a recruiter within a few days of updating his CV, so we started listening to your podcast episodes non-stop (in the car, at home, on our commutes) and all your advice, tips and jokes were once again invaluable during this process. Finding and securing a job can be such a stressful experience, particularly due to all the unknowns and uncertainty, but your insights helped both of us through it every step of the way. I told my partner about the episode to play right before the actual interview and he didnโt realise it was going to be a short one, and ended up playing it on repeat 5-6 times before the interview to keep that inspiration and motivation up! Enjoy your coffees from us. Every bit deserved, and more. Thanks again.โ

๐ Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Katherine who shouted us some coffees โโHi Emma & Sarah, thanks so much for this wonderful podcast! Your excellent advice and support helped me gain confidence in myself and improve my selection criteria responses (gross, but I work in healthcare so a necessary evil). Thanks to you I was able to land my first interview after being in my current role for almost 7 years! Although it didn't end in employment I was super grateful to be given the opportunity to 'shoot my shot' in front of an interview panel (both in-person and online panel members, no pressure!). The feedback I received highlighted how relaxed and confident I appeared throughout the process, which I attribute to your advice that interviewers are just people too. I have been recommending Interview Boss to family and friends alike so people I care about can hear your awesome tips and encouraging words of wisdom ๐โ

Thu, 15 Jun 2023 - 26min - 101 - Interview worthy examples - what makes a great story?
In this episode, we're tackling a common conundrum: feeling like you don't have any good examples for your job interview. But fear not!ย
In this weekโs episode Sarah and Emma help you discover the hidden gems that lie within your own experiences. We debunk the myth that only grand achievements make for captivating interview stories. We'll do some brainstorming together to show you how to transform everyday moments into extraordinary tales that leave interviewers impressed.
๐ Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Raelyn โHi Emma & Sarah! I wanted to buy you both a coffee in hopes you cheers with me to my new job (that you both totally helped me get with your awesome podcast)! A little backstory- I graduated in 2020 and my first job out of college was as a Recruiter for an IT staffing agency. I did it for about a year and a half and was let go at the end of last year due to a company merger, but truthfully wasn't happy. In my unemployed months I did some soul searching and realized recruiting isn't really where I want to be. Having never done an internship through college (I always worked retail or hospitality jobs) coupled with my only corporate job being a recruiter, I struggled transitioning into something new outside of the recruiting/HR related positions I seemed to only be qualified for. As rejection emails piled up for the corporate retail jobs I was applying for, I started to think I was going to be stuck in that box forever. But I kept applying, kept listening to your podcast, and took your advice and truly honed in on my "transferable skills" that my years of retail experience gave me. (All those black friday's I worked couldn't have been for nothing damnit! lol๐) And despite having been a recruiter (who literally prepped people on how to interview) I myself still couldn't shake those pre-interview nerves and would find myself having this "runaway train brain" trying to articulate my skills in relation to X, Y & Z jobs. But when I would listen to your podcast (which your voices alone are very soothing btw) the advice and motivation would help me be the recruiter inside that I needed to be for myself. After 3 rounds of interviews I am happy to say I have accepted an E-Commerce Internship for a reputable retailer and start May 1st. It might sound crazy to be taking an internship at 25 years old but I couldn't be happier knowing this is exactly where I want to be. So thank you so much for what you do and if my comment just so happens to make it on the podcast my advice to others from my own experience is that: You're not married to your first job out of college! And if you're anything like me and youre interested in a lot of different avenues, then it's going to probably take a little while longer then some to figure out exactly where you want to be...just don't rush things. You'll get there at your own pace! Signed, Sealed, Delivered, all the way from NJ, USA๐ -A very happy listener and new career path adventurerโจโ

Have you been told you're a backup candidate, or that you only * just * missed out. Listen to this episode before you let those feelings of rejection creep in!
In this episode, Emma and Sarah discuss what it means and what you should do. We explain why it's not necessarily a bad thing and share our own success stories of hiring or being hired as a backup candidate.
We also chat about how the "if I'm not their first choice I don't want it" mindset isn't always helpful or applicable in the job search [note, we definitely DO support this energy in your dating life].
๐ Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Brittany! โI am obsessed with this podcast. You both haveย theย best voices, I literally soak up everything you both say.ย I'm onย aย temporary contract at workย andย didn't want to return to my substantive position, so started applying for other external jobs.ย Theย first interview I absolutely bombed, but then I found your podcast! (I have been atย theย same company for 9 yearsย andย have hadย aย lot of internal transfers, so don't have much interview experience/ I usually try to avoid them likeย theย plague). I was feeling really deflated/stuck,ย andย just lacking confidence in my ability to ever get another job because I thought my interview skills were that bad. After listening to your podcast though I felt so incredibly empoweredย andย aware of my transferable skills. I got an interview withย aย government agency, which I would have previously found so scaryย andย intimidating. I treated your podcast likeย aย bible while I prepared for that interview,ย andย went into it feeling so confidentย andย prepared! It was inย aย different area to where I live, so I knew I probably wouldn't get this job, but wanted to do well to prove to myself I could do thisย andย to hopefully get intoย theย merit pool for local positions. My nerves didn't getย theย best ofย meย andย I answered allย theย questions well. I even stayed firm onย theย days I would be willing to travel ifย theย hybrid arrangement was negotiable. I receivedย aย call from one ofย theย panel members afterwards with absolute glowing feedbackย andย to tellย meย I'm successfully inย theย merit pool for local positions overย theย next 18 months (They said I had everything they were looking for, but there was no wriggle room onย theย hybrid arrangement). Even though I didnt get that position, I have never felt more proud of myselfย andย am still on suchย aย high. I have even since hadย theย confidence to speak to my current manager about career development opportunities/ย aย permanent role in her team. This has lead to really great internal feedback on how I'm doing,ย aย permanent job offerย andย reassurance that there will be upcoming managerial positions that I would be suitable for. I'm still working upย theย courage to ask forย aย salary review. All in all, my situation hasn't changed financially or in terms ofย aย better title, but my mindsetย andย self confidence has improved immensely. Keepย theย podcast coming! I would love to hear more on creating internal champions/mentorsย andย networking! (Especially when your mentors are very busyย andย you work remotely so don't get many chances to speak to them) Thanks girls xโ

Hi Emma and Sarah, I started job hunting almost 5 months ago and didn't have a lot of luck until recently! Coming from a toxic work environment had shattered my confidence and it was showing, I had been applying for roles beneath my ability with little success. After a good reset over the new year and then a holiday walking around Tasmania (i'm from NZ) I thought I needed to really do something about this and started listening to your podcast! I listened to over a dozen episodes whilst on holiday and surpise a company I had applied to, rang and wanted an interview as soon as possible, so whilst on holiday we did a zoom interview which I thought I bombed, but they wanted a second one when I got back. long story short your positive practical advice gave me the confidence and tips I needed to succeed in the interviews and I just got the job this week! It's a step up, with more pay, slightly less hours and great benefits. But most importantly the people there are so nice; it's almost a dream. I've been telling everyone about your podcast, so please keep it up! Cheers Simonโ

I started listening to your podcast on my 50 min commute into a job that has burnt me out, and it gave me the confidence boost I needed to breeze through my interviews for a job in a new field. I just got an offer for my dream job: better culture, fully remote, fewer hours, better benefits, and a 25% salary increase! I even tried negotiating for more. They said no, but Iโm not sure I would have tried without the mindset shift you both provided me. Thanks again for everything you do! p.s. I listened to the "listen to this before your interview" episode as I was driving to the interview and had so much self doubt I almost cancelled, but your encouragement helped me get there and while I was in the parking lot I figured at the very least I could use the experience as practice. Wed, 02 Nov 2022 - 25min - 80 - WHY do recruiters ask where you are interviewing? Here's what to say
If you're interviewing, you might be asked by a recruiter if you are interviewing with anyone else. Are you meant to say you have tons of interviews in order to seem in demand, or should you say they are your only choice to show how interested you are?
In this weekโs episode, Sarah and Emma discuss what to say when recruiters or hiring managers ask if you're interviewing with other companies. We're going to discuss why they ask the question, the different ways you can answer it, and how that's going to affect how you get off the phone with that recruiter.

โHi girls! I wanted to thank you for your podcast, you changed my whole mindset of interviews! My I had a few in the past few weeks and they were all soo different from the last. My interview last week was awful! The lady was so rude, was talking to me like I was in a disciplinary meeting.. I usually would have gotten upset and flustered, but instead I knew this was just as much for me as it was for them! So I started asking her questions, turned the tables and she soon stopped trying to walk over me. I made the call myself and called the recruiter who arranged the meeting that I didnโt vibe and have no interest in working with her. Apparently the other interviewers loved me and so no bridges burnt there thankfully!
My last interview went for over an hour! I loved their attitudes and asked them loads of questions that Iโd prepared thanks to you girls โค๏ธ they called me an hour afterwards to say they loved me and when could I start!!
Itโs such a relief, Iโve been in an awful toxic work place the past few years and am on maternity leave and was dreading going back.. so I wanted to thank you (again!) for all your support and advice.
