  • 662 - You can still visit a Blockbuster 🎬

Before streaming changed everything, Blockbuster Video ruled the American weekend. With bright aisles and endless rows of tapes, Blockbuster turned movie renting into a national ritual and displaced thousands of local video shops. By the 1990s it had over 9,000 stores worldwide and rented 100 million tapes a week. This episode traces Blockbuster’s rise, domination, and downfall; explores abandoned stores across the United States; and explains why one remaining Blockbuster in Oregon survives as a living museum of 1999. Original research & script: Bryce Walsh. Adapted & narrated by Ryan Socash. Editor: Karolina Szwata. Host: Ryan Socash. #Blockbuster #ItsHistory #AbandonedPlaces Learn more about your ad choices. • 661 - I discovered Niagara's lost factories ⚡

Niagara Falls wasn’t always a postcard-perfect tourist spot. In the early 1900s it became an industrial powerhouse driven by the falls and the world’s first large-scale hydroelectric plants. This episode explores the rise and fall of Niagara Falls’ mills district: how Tesla and Westinghouse turned the area into an electrical center, why industries like aluminum and chemicals clustered on its shores, and how environmental disasters such as Love Canal left lasting scars. Today’s Niagara is a shadow of its industrial past, but ruins, tunnels, and power stations still tell that story. #NiagaraFalls #IndustrialHistory #ItsHistory Learn more about your ad choices. • 660 - What's inside the secret 28th floor?

Towering 398 feet over Niagara Square, Buffalo City Hall is one of the largest Art Deco buildings in America. Behind its mosaic-covered halls and a cosmic stained-glass ceiling that maps the exact night sky over Buffalo in 1931 lie a building full of secrets: a restricted prisoner passage known as the Tunnel of Tears, a passive cooling system that harnesses gales off Lake Erie with almost zero electricity, and a hidden 28th-floor observation deck reachable only by an unmarked stairwell. Built at the height of the Great Depression and finished on time, on budget, and without a single worker death, the building watched Buffalo rise as the electric “City of Light” and then nearly fall apart as industry collapsed and the city went broke. This episode climbs to the secret top floor, walks the Tunnel of Tears, and explores how a city too poor to demolish its own landmark helped preserve one of North America’s finest Art Deco buildings. #ItsHistory #Buffalo #ArtDeco Learn more about your ad choices. • 659 - Inside NYC’s hidden train at Waldorf 🚇

Beneath Midtown Manhattan lies a secret rail siding: Track 61. Built in the 1910s as part of Grand Central’s service yard, it originally hauled coal and ash. When the Waldorf Astoria was built above it in 1931, the track became a private platform connected to the hotel by a freight elevator. Over decades it carried generals, presidents, and celebrities — Franklin D. Roosevelt used it, and Andy Warhol staged a party there in the 1960s. This episode separates myth from fact, traces Track 61’s origins in New York’s golden age of rail, and explores why it remains an enduring urban mystery. #GrandCentral #WaldorfAstoria #UrbanHistory Learn more about your ad choices.
