- 1975 - The Kills [Performance & Interview Only]
On the show this time, it’s a stripped down performance from post-garage rockers The Kills.
The Kills met back in the late 90’s when singer Alison Mosshart was staying in London during a tour with a previous band, and met her upstairs neighbor Jamie Hince. She loved his guitar playing and insisted that they be in a band together. That didn’t happen right away, but they kept in touch, and began writing together, and sharing 4 track demos of stuff, from when they were apart. Once her band broke up, Alison moved to London, and the band that would become The Kills formed in 2001, recording as VV and Hotel until they picked the band name. They play hard hitting heavy music, with one foot in bluesy garage rock, the other in epic cinematic noir-pop. It’s glitzy and dirty and always so dang cool. Their latest album is 'God Games' and it is available on Domino.
Recorded 02/07/2024.

Tue, 09 Apr 2024 - 1966 - Margo Cilker [Performance & Interview Only]
On the show this time, it’s the West Coast Americana of Margo Cilker.
Margo Cilker is a California native, of the Santa Clara Cilkers, a town in the Southern Bay, transformed by the relentless onslaught of technology companies. Farmland and apricot orchards have fallen prey to silicon and semiconductors. She moved north in her 20s, spending time in Oregon, and then barely into the state of Washington midway between Portland and Walla Walla.
She writes about life, embracing the poetically cryptic, as she wonders aloud concerning cattle drives, loneliness, drinking, and a friend's trout. Her latest record is called 'Valley of Heart's Delight,' sharing that title with the actual place, and a couple of books. It is available on Fluff & Gravy Records.

Tue, 26 Mar 2024 - 1962 - J Mascis [Performance & Interview Only]
On the show this time, it’s the soothing acoustic jams of J Mascis.
Just kidding! J Mascis has fun playing some acoustic shows, though of course he is known for playing a Fender Jazzmaster, super loud through a couple of Marshall stacks and a fuzz pedal or 2. His familiar well-worn tenor has only gained strength over the years since we first heard him with Dinosaur Jr.
In this session he grabbed a 12-string acoustic and delivered an intimate soul-comforting set. His latest solo record, recorded at home, is called 'What Do We Do Now' and it is available on Sub Pop records.

Tue, 19 Mar 2024 - 1960 - Hooveriii [Performance & Interview Only]
Hooveriii is the solo project, now writ large, of singer / guitarist Bert Hoover. Specifically, Robert Hoover the third. The project started out in a garage in El Segundo, CA with Bert playing all the parts - bass, guitar, Casio, and drum machine into his classic 4-track Tascam 414. You can listen to that original album on vinyl coming out for Record Store Day - that’s April 20th, 2024. Over time he has assembled a stellar group of like-minded musicians. They are all capable of hitting their mark, tight and neat. They are also capable of some superb veering off into space jams. It’s psych-rock, influenced by krautrock, and it aims to take you away from this harsh world for a while - to a better place. The latest record is called 'Pointe' and it is available through the Reverberation Appreciation Society / Levitation.

Tue, 12 Mar 2024 - 1958 - Blonde Redhead [Performance & Interview Only]
On the show this time, it’s the brilliant intensity of the veteran New York City band - Blonde Redhead.
Blonde Redhead is a legendary independent alternative-rock band. They’ve been making music, and records on their own terms since 1994. The consistent core of the band is Kazu Makino and twin brothers Simone and Amedeo Pace. Between them they cover vocals, keys, guitars and drums. They sometimes work with collaborators - most often occupying the position of bass player. Their band has truly gone through fire - surviving breakups, endless fights, a horrible trampling by horse, and even the goodbye album. This moment finds them returning - 30 years wiser since their debut - with a brilliant, complex record, as fresh and original as any fan could wish for. It's called 'Sit Down For Dinner' and it’s available on Section1 Records.

Tue, 05 Mar 2024 - 1956 - The Hives [Full Performance]
On the show this time, it’s the Rock n Roll Revival of the Hives.
The Hives have been rocking fans across the world since the 90’s, when they released their first demo, “Sounds Like Sushi.” Their over-the-top energy and memorable hooks were apparent from the start – as was their wacky sense of humor – need a punk ode to constipation? Yeah you got it. They dress up fancy in black and white suits. They play fast loud punk rock music. Their live shows are legendary. And ever since they put out the anthem “Hate To Say I Told You So” on their 2nd full length, 'Veni Vidi Vicious,' they did in fact take over the world. Tue, 27 Feb 2024 - 1954 - El Khat [Performance & Interview Only]
On the show this time is inspiration from the music of Yemen, played with the homemade instruments of El Khat.
El Khat is the musical brainchild of Eyal el Wahab, a Yemeni man who grew up in Tel Aviv. He makes his own instruments in the tradition of impoverished people all over the world. The band is named after the drug – Khat – a stimulant chewed like tobacco across the Middle East and in Africa, and you’d better check where you are before partaking. Its legality varies by location, as does the punishment for possession! El Khat’s music is based in the traditional sounds of Yemen, but it is not frozen in amber, this is not anthropology. This is living modern music for you to listen to now. Their latest is called Albat Alawi Op. 99 and it is available on Glitterbeat.

Tue, 20 Feb 2024 - 1952 - TEKE::TEKE [Performance & Interview Only]
On the show this time, it’s the compelling “collage-rock” of Montreal’s TEKE::TEKE.
TEKE::TEKE is a rock band from Montreal, with the twist being that they play in the style of 1960’s and 70’s Japanese movie soundtracks. It is a big band - 7 musicians - and their diverse backgrounds help to drive their eclectic modern take on the psychedelic rock they use for inspiration. The name TEKE::TEKE refers to the classic sound of surf guitar, and originally, they formed to honor Japanese surf legend Takeshi Terauchi. Drums, bass, dueling guitars, trombone, and flute constitute an impressive sonic palette, but once you throw in traditional Japanese instruments, multilingual poetic lyrics, and a punk rock heart - you'd better hold on because it's gonna be a ride! The addition of one of the world’s most charismatic front-persons, in the form of singer and fashion icon Maya Kuroki pushes the band from brilliant to downright extraordinary. It’s loud, it's colorful and it’s super fun. Their latest is called 'Hagata' and it is available on Kill Rock Stars.

On the show this time, it’s the avant-garde sitar of Anoushka Shankar. Anoushka Shankar is a master musician, as well as being a composer and producer. She studied with her famous father - Ravi Shankar - who had a smaller instrument made for his 7 year old daughter. She made her professional debut at thirteen, and over the years she has reinvented sitar music, playing with musicians from various genres, cultures and geographies, looking for new situations and contexts to use its inimitable voice. As she puts it, she “de-exotified” the Sitar. Flamenco, hip hop, jazz, and cinematic scores are all fair game. Her latest record, the first of a trilogy is called 'Chapter 1: FOREVER, FOR NOW.' Tue, 06 Feb 2024 - 1948 - Jungle [Performance & Interview Only]
On the show this time, dance your butt right off with London producers Jungle.
British dance-music producer-musicians Jungle have figured out the recipe. They’ve been making hook-laden rump-shakers since before their oddly titled full length debut - 'Jungle.' Technically they’ve been doing it since forever - they’ve been friends since they were little kids. Massive grooves like “Busy Earnin',” “Casio,” and “Keep Moving” set the standard. They’ve got placements in TV, film, and video games, so you’ve probably heard Jungle even if you didn’t know it. Also, their videos have some of the best dancing you’ll ever see, thanks in part to the ongoing collaboration with the KZ Creatives collective. Tue, 23 Jan 2024 - 1944 - Gregory Alan Isakov [Performance & Interview Only]
On the show this time, it’s the meticulous indie-folk songwriting of Gregory Alan Isakov.
Gregory Alan Isakov is a singer-songwriter sure. But he’s also a farmer. His market farm in Boulder, Colorado provides produce to around a hundred CSA members, a couple of chefs, and a food bank. The man is really into growing the perfect lettuce mix. That’s why it’s rare to find him on tour in the summer. But - when you have a new full length album, five years in the making, it’s time to dust off the old road boots and get out there. It’s called 'Appaloosa Bones' and is available on Dualtone Records and through his own label Suitcase Town Music.

Frankie and The Witch Fingers returned to KEXP’s studios in support of their 7th studio record. What started as a one-man-band - Dylan Sizemore on guitar, vocals, and stomping away on a kick drum - has evolved and adapted into a 6-piece prog/post-punk juggernaut - now featuring Nikki “Pickle” Smith from Death Valley Girls and Nick Aguilar, previous touring drummer for Mike Watt of the legendary Minutemen. On the show this time, it’s the detail driven divinations of The Mountain Goats.
The Mountain Goats are a definitive independent band. John Darnielle has been releasing music under that name since 1991. He started out taping straight onto cassette, with a boombox, and over the years has returned to that medium - lo-fi for sure, but oddly high in emotional fidelity. He’s also worked with engineers - in particular with Tiny Telephone’s John Vanderslice, and is now equally comfortable with full-studio productions. The band has changed over the years too, but at the moment is a wonderfully cohesive group - Peter Hughes on bass, Matt Douglas on sax/keys and 2nd guitar, and rockin’ Jon Wurster on drums. His latest is “Jenny From Thebes” - his 22nd full length album, and it’s available on Merge Records.

On the show this time, it’s the powerful 60’s and 70’s influenced instrumentals of the mighty Budos Band.
The Budos Band is now on their 9th release - 6 albums and 3 EP’s - and they are also now on their own label - Diamond West. They were already recording on their own, in their own studio, and they were living a bi-coastal existence with some members in California. So, it really is an organic move, amicably splitting from their origin story label Daptone Records to do their own thing. 47SOUL is named for the year 1947, which was the year before the Palestinian Nakba and the last year people could move freely from place to place in Bilad Al-Sham, or The Levant. The band fuses a traditional Arabic dance form - Dabke - with electronic hip hop, rock, reggae, and reggaeton to create what is known as Shamstep. This is refugee art, this is anti-border music. The band often says - “Every land is a holy land, seeking recognition.”

Tue, 31 Oct 2023 - 1921 - Tinariwen [Performance & Interview Only]
On the show this time, it’s the OG desert blues of Mali’s Tinariwen.
Tinariwen has been bringing the sound of the northern Sahara to the world for over 20 years. Their music has won the hearts of listeners worldwide, regardless of language spoken. There’s a vibe, a hypnotic groove, and a poetic humanness that pulls you in. There’s also the Blues - the universal music of self-expression in the face of persecution. These musicians have faced hardship and oppression, and it’s not over. A coup in 2020, another in 2021, the withdrawal of the French military and ongoing messy battles between various factions has made civilian life very dangerous. Their songs call for unity, and bravely run counter to the more fundamentalist groups, some of whom would ban music altogether. This record features playing from Daniel Lanois, banjo player Wes Corbett and fiddler Fats Kaplin, highlighting the band’s Americana influences. It’s called 'Amatssou' and was produced remotely by Lanois. It is available through Wedge.

On the show this time, it’s the soulful humanity of Kurdish-Turkish vocalist Aynur. Aynur is a musician from Turkiye, and a Kurdish musician. She applies her breathtaking vocal technique to a refreshing blend of 300 year old Kurdish folk-songs, and her own jazz and pop influences. She is not afraid to address the suffering of the Kurdish people, or the struggles facing women - so much so that her music has at times been banned, her life has been threatened, and she has migrated as a result.
Yo-Yo Ma said “To hear Aynur’s voice is to hear the transformation of all the layers of human joy and suffering into one sound. It reaches so deep into our soul, tears into our hearts, and then we are for one moment, joined as one. It is unforgettable!”

Every member can and does sing, and also write. The original version of the band started in 1994 in San Francisco! They are beloved by fans and fellow musicians alike. They’ve been making music since the mid 2000s, starting out like many a great band - playing the open mics around their part time hometown of Portland Oregon. Over the years the band has changed, but the community around it has only grown. They’ve worked with folks like Chris Funk from the Decemberists, Steve Berlin from Los Lobos, and Sergio Mendoza from Calexico. They’ve toured with Neko Case and the Lumineers. On the show this time, it’s the spell-binding heavy-rock of All Them Witches.
All Them Witches is a band whose fans will show up. It appears that once you fall in love with their long form explorations of time and space, you will follow them to the ends of the earth. They play blues, transmuted. They can shift effortlessly from spooky R&B to heavy metal to epic psych-rock. Rhythm holds it all together, but any of the individual musicians can wander off into improvisation - safely cradled in the communal groove. They recently put out 'The Baker’s Dozen' - one song for each month of the year, plus one for safety - released on YouTube. They’ve been playing multi-night-in-one-city sold out shows supporting their latest album - 'Nothing As Ideal.' What is a dozen but a larger version of a duo? 2 but turned up 10. Then on top of that, why not make it a party dozen? One more than 11! The Sydney duo of Kirsty Tickle on saxophone and Jonathan Boulet on drums and sampler most definitely bring the noise and make the party happen. Their live shows are incendiary, and their commitment to experimentation and improvisation exacerbates the danger. Caroline Polachek returned to KEXP to play songs from her newest record ‘Desire, I Want To Turn Into You’ available on her own imprint “Perpetual Novice.” It opens with some gloriously over-the-top vocal acrobatics. A call across the ocean? A wail of anguish? A howl of desire? Maybe more directly an announcement and a warning - “I AM HERE.”
Without warning she flips the switch and bang! we are into the deadpan “Welcome to my Island” hook, and a beat that could be described as “Don’t you forget about the Soul-Sonic Force.” From there the music flows seamlessly through genres, styles, decades, vibes - anything goes, and Caroline Polachek’s encyclopedic knowledge of (and love for) music, unifies the experience.

They have not released an album or really been performing live in over 12 years, but now that they are playing again - they rocked the 2023 Vive Latino festival - we are holding out hope for a new record. Tue, 27 Jun 2023 - 1885 - KAINA (RE-RELEASE)
Chicago’s KAINA makes dreamy indie R&B songs that serve as affirmations of joy for the Guatamalen-Venezuelan artist. She released her impressive sophomore record It Was a Home back in March, featuring collaborations with Helado Negro, Sleater-Kinney, and Sen Morimoto. She stopped by KEXP over the summer to play a gorgeous set of songs off the record and spoke with Gabriel Teodros about coming up in Chicago’s youth music programs, the role family plays in her new record, and building a home.
As an extra gift, we include a snippet from Sen Morimoto’s KEXP in-studio session from last year featuring KAINA on backing vocals.
Recorded 06/20/2022.

Tue, 27 Jun 2023 - 1884 - Mabe Fratti [Performance & Interview Only]
On the show this time, it's the avant songwriting of cellist Mabe Fratti. Mabe Fratti is a composer and cellist, born in Guatemala and now living in Mexico City. She is a rare bird - a cello player who also sings, who actually sings while playing the cello. Her music is harmonically complex, rhythmically intrepid, and doesn’t shy away from dissonance. Against this backdrop she creates out of the ordinary melody - often surprisingly catchy. She creates honestly, and - very closely with her chosen family of musicians. She would say they work “softly” with lots of room for improvisation and the musical personality of each player, of each friend. Her latest 'Se Ve Desde Aqui' is available on Unheard of Hope records.
Recorded 03/15/2023.

Tue, 20 Jun 2023 - 1882 - Viagra Boys [Performance & Interview Only]
On the show this time, it’s the irreverent satire of Sweden's Viagra Boys. Viagra Boys lead with provocation. (Like if the name “Viagra Boys” doesn’t tip you off, we don’t know what to tell you.) They understand that in times when the patriarchal and fascist elements of society rise, it's essential that someone, something, somewhere - rises in opposition. To critique. To mock. They use exaggerated characters that say outrageous things about the ridiculous and absurd things occurring in this time. In this way they comment on masculinity, shootings, drug abuse and ADD, crime, the failures of “evolution”, monkeys of course, and for some reason - Shrimp. Their latest, 'Cave World,' is available on Year 0001.

Tue, 06 Jun 2023 - 1878 - Sofi Tukker [Performance & Interview Only]
On the show this time, it's the Bossa Nova electro pop of Sofi Tukker.
Sofi Tukker is a duo - Sophie Hawley-Weld and Tucker Halpern. They met at an event - he was DJing, she was singing Bossa Nova. Tucker asked if he could remix a song, and they’ve been working together ever since. While they were both attending Brown, Tucker did a DJ set opening for the electro-funk-disco duo The Knocks. They encouraged him and Sophie to move to New York to make music. Good move. Their very first EP 'Soft Animals' opens with the song “Drinkee” which was eventually nominated for a Grammy. Their latest album 'WET TENNIS' (which stands for “When Everyone Tries To Evolve, Nothing Negative Is Safe”) is available on Ultra Music.
Recorded 01/05/2023.
