Fri, 19 Apr 2024 - 21min - 276 - Old Haunts, Lower Reaches // A Conversation with Nick Larsen
Join Native Nevadan and visual artist Nick Larsen in a captivating episode on @kwnk97.7 as he discusses his solo exhibition Old Haunts, Lower Reaches currently featured at the Nevada Museum of Art. Joining him for the interview are two friends from Santa Fe - where Nick currently resides, artwork and podcaster Chelsea Weathers and writer Jenn Shapland (whose latest book Thin Skin is available now at your favorite independent bookstore). In conjunction with the interview, Nick curated an hour-long playlist - I Want to Live on An Abstract Plain - evoking a drive to the Nevada ghost town Rhyolite, the subject of some of the work in Nick’s exhibition. Listen to the playlist, HERE.
More on Nick Larsen and the exhibition Old Haunts, Lower Reaches (on view Jan 20 - July 7, 2024 at theNevada Museum of Art):
Old Haunts, Lower Reaches is an exhibition of new work by Nick Larsen (b. 1982) that excavates history, possibility, identity, and place. Comprised of layered collage pieces, textile-based architectural models, and image projection, Larsen explores what is present and visible in the desert landscape and, perhaps more importantly, what isn’t.
Influenced heavily by the artist’s experience working for an archaeological firm focused on the Great Basin region, research for Old Haunts, Lower Reaches began when Larsen discovered a fading layer in the history of the ghost town of Rhyolite, Nevada. Rhyolite (located thirty miles from Death Valley National Park) served, at one point, as the proposed site for a planned queer community, Stonewall Park, envisioned by two men from Reno in the 1980s. Contextualized by the history of Rhyolite, Stonewall Park, and his own life, Larsen speculates pasts, presents, and futures for this desert locale.
In the words of the artist, “The desert is an environment defined by what it lacks, its bleakness an invitation to project possibilities for both what could have been and what might be on what is often perceived as empty.” Repurposing materials to create his layered collages and sculptures, Larsen’s speculative practice also serves as a kind of “making do,” using what is at hand to give form to an invisible history or an unattainable future.
Nick Larsen was raised in Northern Nevada and currently lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
Listen in on April 20th at 9am on KWNK 97.7FM to explore how art and music intertwine with Nick Larson.

- 265 - Bike Life Radio: Bicycle Safety Stop & Stop as Yield Laws
Drivers roll through stop signs. So why can't bike riders? The federal government says the safest way to ride a bike is to roll through the intersections when there are no cars. Its even more important for cyclists because stopping and starting take a huge amount of energy. Believe it or not, some people don't ride bikes because not stopping at intersections can get you a ticket. Now, laws are sweeping the nation to change that and right here in Nevada, we are considering similar legislation. We will talk to advocates who have passed or are working on new laws in Boston, Washington DC and Rochester. One of them, Erik Noonan of We Bike Rochester is a League of American Bicyclists Certified Advocate, and he is moving to Las Vegas where he hopes to continue his advocacy.

Wed, 04 Oct 2023 - 1h 03min - 246 - Bike Life Radio: Burning Man's Magic Story Making Machines
Black Rock City may have THE lowest carbon emissions per capita per capita, according to a study by Andrew Oliphant of San Francisco State University. Why? Bikes, that's why. In Black Rock City, 90 percent of people use bikes. People For Bikes also studies the city and the lessons that can be learned and applied off playa. Despite the significant impact of bikes on and off playa, Burning Man did not have bike questions on its census until now. For the first time, field notes from past years were also evaluated for mentions of bikes. They are magic story-making machines. We evaluated the field notes of the Black Rock City Census where people can write anything they want. We found that women mentioned bikes in the field notes twice as often as men. That indicates that bikes may have more of an impact on their lives. In this episode, we share some of those stories from the field notes and general stories from Black Rock City.

Countless books have been written about him, so why hasn't a movie been made about legendary cyclist Major Taylor? Could it be because Taylor was an African American who beat white cyclists in this largely white sport in the 1890s? What we do know is that a movie promoting Taylor's story could inspire minority youth to get into the sport. Now, an award-winning movie producer is working on a movie about Taylor and coming to Reno to give a talk on September 22 at the Reno Public Market at 7 p.m. followed by a film festival. We will talk to him in this show and talk to people at Food Truck Friday who are using the new Bike Valet, sponsored by the event.

Fri, 05 May 2023 - 17min - 220 - Bike Life Radio: Protected Bike Paths
Local government employees are standing in the way of City Council and Regional Transportation Commission votes to build a protected bike path on University Way/Center Street. In this episode, we explore the controversy, false statements, and misinformation spread by staff. We also take a trip to Washington D.C. where we see how that city has installed many protected paths painlessly. A study there shows that protected paths benefitted women tremendously, increasing ridership from 25 percent to around 45 percent. They did it with the help of the Dutch Cycling Embassy. Meanwhile, Reno Nevada has the same Embassy resources at its disposal but city staff are blocking what would be the first protected bike path from UNR to Midtown. In this episode of Bike Life Radio, we hear the opposition inside the local government to stop the will of the people. To tell local officials to stop their obstruction to safety, go to BuildABetterBikeNetwork.com.

We usually don't hear from kids about their experiences on our roads with bikes because it is hard to interview kids. You need to have parental permission. But Bike Life show producer Ky Plaskon has kids. So, for the holidays, in the spirit of spending time with family, he took 11-year-old Aeva Plaskon on a 20-mile bike ride around Reno and interviewed her about the experience. Then, they joined 16-year-old Alara Plaskon on her bike commute to work from downtown and talked to her about the experience of riding in Reno for older students.

But they face huge challenges. We will hear from conservative Mayor of Sparks Ed Lawson who recently started riding and it has changed his perspective. County Commissioner Alexis Hill is now bike commuting to. She is now on the Regional Transportation Commission, a life-long dream to improve safety. We hear what those two politicians are doing and how their perspectives have changed. Also, we hear how local artist Pan Pantoja performed for his friends riding his bike. Artist Emmalou Ras also built an outhouse on a bike so we will hear from her about that experience. We will also hear from author Helen Thompson about a little-known black community in Black Springs Nevada and how bikes entertained them when they had no other amenities. Also, as always, bike news!

Off-road bike trail building is big business drawing millions of dollars nationwide. There is a right way to do it and a wrong way. We talk to the Biggest Little Trail Stewardship about how they build trails with all the right permissions from various agencies. We will also talk to a guy out in Fallon, Nevada who built trails without permission on his own and got a very stern letter from the federal government. Building trails can lead to big fines and jail time, not to mention that trails could damage cultural or historical sites and invite people into sensitive areas who may leave behind trash. On our tour of the illegal trails, we saw no trash. It's not clear to the average mountain biker where cultural sites may exist, but what is clear is that what was once undisturbed desert in the area is now disturbed. The illegal trail building and subsequent mountain biking events held on those trails demonstrate an intense demand for more mountain bike trails in the west and rural areas. Building trails appropriately takes time and cooperation from many agencies and people.

Reno is getting some recognition in other cities for a 24-hour bike challenge called Scalley Cat. It's inspiring tattoos, red-hot ass branding, milk baths, fireworks, cross-bearing, sexual acts, jumping over people on bikes, costumes, picking up trash, fake IDs, riding through casinos and hundreds of other shenanigans. What ties them together? Bikes. Participants start out in a park and get what is known as "the bible" which has all kinds of silly, gross, fun and wild things to do. To add to the mystery, participants prefer to remain anonymous. The event hit a 15-year anniversary this year. It happens the first weekend in April.

On the latest Soft Power Radio, as part of our Black History Month special series honoring the local community, we are in conversation once again with Donald Griffin and RoMar Tolliver, co-founders of Black Wall Street. Food pantry, resource hub, youth counseling initiative, tutoring center, at-risk and low-income outreach program - Black Wall Street has, in less than two years, become a vital community asset. Donald and RoMar built all of their innovative, grassroots programming from scratch, starting with nothing but a vision and a seemingly endless supply of dedication to their work. We talk about why their particular approach is so necessary and so effective, what projects they have been developing since they moved to their new location at 1301 Cordone Ave a few months ago, and what the bright future holds for Black Wall Street and for the communities it so tirelessly serves.

Do bikes belong on trains, boats, and busses? We test how it works with a 10-year-old and a 15-year-old across 500 miles of travel from Reno to San Francisco and back. Our interviews were all in Oakland. We interrogate people about bikes at a farmer's market in Oakland and snagged an exclusive interview with custom bag manufacturer AlleyCatSewing.com
Sun, 06 Mar 2022 - 57min - 178 - Soft Power Radio // Celebrating Reno's Black Community: A Conversation with Music Icon Jammal Tarkington
As part of our Black History Month special series honoring the local community on Soft Power Radio, we are in conversation with Jammal Tarkington. Jammal first came to Reno from his hometown of Stockton on a UNR music scholarship in the early 90s. Not long after, he was already selling out local music venues and sharing the stage with now-legendary bands like No Doubt, Fishbone, The Specials, and Sublime. He has played casinos, clubs, bars, coffee shops, underground DIY all-ages spots - pretty much everywhere music has happened in Reno, Jammal has been there in some way. These days, he spends a lot of time teaching, curating, and DJing as well as writing and performing with various projects spanning styles from hip-hop to soul to acoustic rock to reggae. In April, Jammal's Reno/Sacramento collaborative hip-hop group Who Cares will be coming to the Holland project for a combination master class and performance - keep your eyes peeled for more info on that soon!

Today, on Soft Power Radio, as part of our Black History Month special series honoring the local community, we are in conversation with Jasmine Plummer of Carson City. At age 11, Jasmine was the first ever female quarterback of a Pop Warner football team. Her story is an inspiration to female athletes everywhere - and it inspired a Hollywood movie starring Keke Palmer and Ice Cube - The Longshots. We'll talk about the central role sports have played in Jasmine's life and the power of sports in general, particularly for young people. Jasmine is still tearing up the field - she plays in the WFA (Women's Football Alliance) for the Nevada Storm. Come cheer them on April 30th at Reno High; more info at nevadastormfootball.com.
