"My Blood... Your Blood, Our Blood..."
In Part 1 of this 2 part series about Blood Oaths & Magick, we will be exploring one of the most prominent and memorable scenes in the Practical Magic film: Sally & Gillian's blood oath. It is clear that the sisters have a connection that transcends time & space as Gillian makes a promise that Sally in turn uses to save Gillian's life.
In today's episode, we'll acknowledge the absence of the sisters' blood oath in the books, however we pick out a "dark" characteristic that distinguishes it from the blood in the film, which author Alice Hoffman did not include until much later on in the series.
Join us as we analyze the appearance of blood magick in the books, explore TV tropes and cultural practices, and take a trip down memory lane as the Stinas recount their own comical personal experiences!

In this episode, we explore that infamously inaccurate date from the movie that has us scratching our heads, the date of Sally's testimony: March 8, 1998. How could that have possibly taken place after the summer solstice? The Stinas piece together a timeline and wonder what the writers of the film could have possibly been thinking.
We'll also chat about the birth & death days of some of our beloved book characters and ponder why author Alice Hoffman deems March 21 "The Unluckiest Day of the Year".
All this as well as a closer look at The Spring Equinox also known as Ostara on the Wheel of the Year, it's old & new traditions and of course magick & lore!

"He can flip pancakes in the air..."
Dive into the enchanting world of Practical Magic as we uncover the layers of symbolism behind pancakes in both the film and book series. When Sally Owens was a little girl, she wished for qualities in a man that couldn't possibly exist. If he didn't exist, then she'll never die of a broken heart... Little does she know, Gary Hallet possesses those very qualities, including a very special talent: Flipping Pancakes in the air. And little does Gary know, he's handling a murder weapon! Saguaro Cactus Pancakes anyone?
Through insightful analysis and spirited discussion, we explore how pancakes shaped history with its Pagan origin and Catholic Tradition , infusing magic into everyday rituals all over the world! We'll then discover how these historical hot cakes carry the weight of generations of Owens women that dates all the way back to their ancestor Maria.
Join us as we flip through the pages of Practical Magic, revealing the hidden significance of this seemingly simple food item and savoring the magic it brings to both the page and the screen!

What do you do when there's a "Blood on the Moon?" You grab your Tiger's Eye of course, that is if you haven't misplaced it! In this week's episode, The Stinas unravel new theories regarding Gillian's Tiger's Eye - the only crystal acknowledged in the Practical Magic film.
We'll explore the possible answers to our burning questions: Why was it only in just a few scenes? Was Gillian only wearing it to keep Jimmy's power at bay? Why does it disappear after Jimmy's is dead and buried? Where did it even go? And were these all conscious decisions made by the writers of the film?
Though Gillian's Tiger's Eye pendant appears only a few times throughout the film's entirety, it has made quite the impression, sending fans to Etsy shops in droves to purchase these coveted replicas! And of course, we will be discovering the science, magick and lore surrounding this stone, including its use in the creation of ...watercolor paints? HEY WITCH HEY!
We are so excited to debut our first Song-i-Sode of Season 2 and our last of 2023! This next installation of our SONG-i-SODE series is Session #6!
Today we are talking about another one of our Practical Magic inspired original songs called "One Green Eye, One Blue"! This song comes off the heels of Episode 59: a character analysis we did for our favorite pancake flipping man of the law, Officer Gary Hallet, as well as Episode 60 which was dedicated to Gary's rare eye condition known as Heterochromia, hence the inspiration for today's song!
This original song is Gary's admission to Sally that despite his refusal to believe in fate, there is in fact something mysteriously magical about her.
The Stinas as they revisit their notes & lyrics and chat about how they wrote this Doo-wop style love song!
We'll be dissecting our original work verse by verse, draft by draft, and take you on the creative journey of how we wrote the song from start to finish. We'll also explore original versions of the song, scratch demos, and lyrics that just didn't make the cut. Then sit back and relax as Justina treats us to a small live performance!View our Sources on Hero! Listen to All of Our SONGISODES on this Spotify Playlist! When Sally cast her Amas Veritas love spell, she asked for things in a man that she knew "couldn't possibly exist". So, today we're talking HETEROCHROMIA: A fascinating, rare and beautiful condition that Gary possesses which gives him one green eye and one blue.
We'll also deep dive on different colored eyes in the world of witchcraft, magick and folk lore. Could two different colored eyes be physical evidence of the witch's call? IS GARY ALSO A WITCH!?! Fri, 08 Dec 2023 - 2h 39min - 60 - Ep. 57: Michael Nyman (Composer Profile) | The Lost Film Score
Michael Nyman is an English "Minimalist" composer who was hired to compose the score for the film Practical Magic. However, just before the film's release in theaters his score was ultimately scrapped and replaced by the score as we now know it by Alan Silvestri. The original pressings of the Warner's soundtrack CD featured two cues from Nyman's rejected score. When he was replaced by Alan Silvestri, the soundtrack was re-pressed and Nyman's cues were replaced by two (shorter) Silvestri cues.
In today's episode, The Stinas not only discuss this composition kerfuffle, they also deep dive on the successes and failures of the veteran composer, whose work has seemingly gone severely under-appreciated in the American film market.
In an amazing twist of fate, one of Nyman's rejected cues from the Practical Magic film resulted in a magical collaboration with an indie artist, that gave new life & meaning to the once disregarded composition!
With this episode, we hope to shine a spotlight on the life and career of Michael Nyman. So join us as we marvel at his amazing accomplishments and accolades, reinforcing the notion that our failures do not define us!WARNING: SPOILERS ABOUND!

"It's going to be you and me living in a big house... these two old biddies with all these cats"
In the episode, The Stinas deep dive into the complex concept of "Spinsters" and a subjective look at "the child-free woman." This term also historically referred to unmarried women who exceeded the typical marriage age, often carrying a societal stigma. We explore the etymology, the evolution of the term, and its connotations of age, marital status, and expectations.
The Stinas acknowledge the presence of the "Spinster" trope in the Practical Magic film, and analyze the many characters in the book who may qualify as such! How does the term resonate with the Owens women?
We ponder a centuries old question that begs to be answered: Why does the term typically go hand in hand with witches? Contrasting the conventional "Maiden, Mother, Crone" archetype, we also examine the empowering image of "Eternal Virgin Goddesses" like Hestia, Artemis, Iphigeneia, and Athena. We explore the portrayal of spinsters in media, uncover stereotypes, and discuss the term's reclamation by single women. This discussion highlights the strength and resilience of women who have forged paths that defy societal norms, offering a compelling insight into the changing narrative surrounding the term "Spinster".

"DATURA STRAMONIUM!"
The Stinas are back at it again with another Magick & Lore episode! In this "killer" episode, we'll talk all about this poisonous and invasive weed that has James Hawkins wanted for murder in the book. This baneful herb is not prevalent in the film, however the Stinas speculate on whether or not Gillian may have been using it in the scene which is the center of their "controversial" astral travel theory! We learn about the origins of the herb's more common name "Jimsonweed" and its ties to a rather deplorable incident involving our militia and a bit of boiled salad. This episode may have you double thinking where you buy your produce!

WARNING: This episode contains discussion of violence, mental illness and other disturbing topics. Listener discretion is advised.
HEY WITCH HEY! Today we bring you a very bittersweet episode...Not only is this the last Song-i-sode of the season, it is also our SEASON 1 FINALE!
In this Song-i-sode Session #5, we talk about another one of our Practical Magic inspired original songs called "All Hallow's Eve" and the enchanting film finale that inspired it. Join the Stinas as they revisit their notes & lyrics and chat about how they (witch)crafted the song to capture all the essences of autumn and the uninhibited feeling the Owens women must have felt on that magickal Halloween night, as they floated from the rooftop for all of the town to see! We'll be dissecting our original work verse by verse, draft by draft, and take you on the creative journey of how we wrote the song from start to finish. We'll also explore original versions of the song, scratch demos, and lyrics that just didn't make the cut. Then sit back and relax as Justina treats us to a small live performance!
Also, as a special Halloween Treat, The Stinas have gathered more spooky stories to tell you! We'll then deep dive on All Hallow's Eve as it appears in the books, and the Halloween finale of the film as we ponder some thought provoking questions. Why did the screenwriters not go with the original book ending? What was REALLY the purpose of the film's whimsical finale?

This one is a very long one, and for that, we do apologize. Although this is not considered a "BONUS" episode, it is indeed a very special occasion, so we are still treating it as such. This is the very first time Justina and Kristina are recording in the same room, together! So we are bringing you 5 hours of SPOOKY shenanigans! This will be a VISUAL episode over on the Patreon for our $8 Rose tier!
In this episode we are talking about "los espookies": Hauntings, Exorcisms, Polter....erm....PINEAPPLE-GEISTS and more spooky things to make the hair on the back of your necks stand straight up! We'll discuss Gillian's possession in the books & the movie, some words from the director, cast & crew on what it was like to shoot that climactic coven scene, and some real signs to look out for to let you know if a ghost is making itself at home, in your personal space! We'll get into the history, lore, and real life accounts of the most disturbing demonic possession & exorcisms to date! And as always, we take a look at how exorcisms and hauntings are portrayed in pop culture, including a few movie sets that were actually deemed to be cursed!
The Stinas also read some real life ghost stories submitted by their listeners & patrons, plus tell their own experiences with the supernatural! A ghost plays ball with Justina's cat, and Kristina is haunted by an ex-boyfriend from beyond the grave!
Today we welcome special guest, Justina's husband, Avinash Patel! All this and more! Tune in!

In today's episode, The Stinas explore the mysterious portraits adorning the walls throughout the Owens residence on Magnolia Street. They discuss Maria's painting as mentioned in the books and take note of a possible plot hole in the portrait's traveling capabilities! They explore more Titanic connections that lead them to believe that Rose was in fact a long lost Owens ancestor. No episode is complete without a deep dive into the movie scenes - The Stinas explore each portrait peppered throughout the film and the artists who painted them. However, most of the paintings in the film remain a mystery and many questions still beg to be answered - What are they called? Who painted them? What are their origins? And WHY were they chosen for the film? Do they hold greater significance to the Owens storyline, than meets the eye?
And that's not all! The Stinas explore Princess Sybille of Cleves, the subject of the film's most noteworthy paintings, as well as her entire family of royals during the rule of Henry VIII- not to mention one of history's juiciest catfishing schemes! Artists explored in today's episode are Barthel Bruyn the Elder, Lucas Cranach the Elder, Hans Holbein the Younger, Pietro Antonio Rotari, and Rembrandt Peale!

Pop culture also makes its way into today's discussion with the 2000s film Chocolat (starring Juliette Binoche, Judi Dench & Johnny Depp) which explores concepts of fearing the unknown, and uses chocolate as a central theme to teach us about the importance of change! We delve into the skin-healing properties of mugwort, unveiling its potential to promote healthy and radiant skin. We also discuss the benefits and potential side effects of consuming mugwort tea, and even smoking dried leaves of the herb. The Stinas ponder its psychotropic nature as they explore ritualistic "moxibustion" and smoke healing. They uncover Mugwort's ancient roots as a remedy for various modern ailments and enlighten the listener as to how to tell the difference between Mugwort and Wormwood, two often confused, similar looking herbs.
Join us as we explore the rich history, folklore, and magical uses of mugwort, drawing inspiration from renowned herbalists like Nicholas Culpeper and Edward Armstrong. Discover the ritual uses of mugwort, from crafting garland crowns and wreaths to incorporating it into cleansing smoke sticks. Additionally, we explore the intriguing connection between mugwort and lucid dreaming, examining its potential benefits in enhancing dream experiences. Lastly, we address an important topic, cautioning against the dangers of herbal abortions and sharing the stories of women who urge others not to follow their lead.

"He's a dancer, romancer, you're a Capricorn, I'm a Can-suh!"
The man can act, he can direct - is there anything he CAN'T DO!?! In this patron pick of an episode, The Stinas talk all about the director of Practical Magic himself, Griffin Dunne. There is more to Mr. Dunne than meets the eye though! In this episode, we'll take a look at his extensive career and his "not so humbled" beginnings as we learn all about his star-studded family tree. "The nudity is entirely optional, as you well remember!"
Welcome to another episode of Magnolia Street, where we embark on an exploration of the fascinating practice of skyclad ritual nudity in Wicca and modern Paganism. In this episode, we delve into the origins of this ritualistic tradition and its significance within these spiritual paths.
We begin with a little AI fun and speculate on the Aunts' Solstice Celebration as the Stinas wonder what Sally & Gilly's experience would have been like "dancing naked under the full moon"! This very small line of movie dialogue sends the Stinas full speed ahead down another rabbit hole, where they examine the meaning of nakedness (and NEKKIDness) in both Wicca and the Bible, uncovering the contrasting perspectives and shedding light on the historical and cultural factors that have shaped our understanding of nudity.
We then trace the history of nudity in Paganism, Wicca, and Witchcraft, unraveling its roots and evolution throughout time. Join us as we explore the role of nudity in witchcraft and magickal practice, delving into its symbolism, empowerment, and transformative potential. Additionally, we delve into the significance of skyclad working in modern Paganism and its benefits for practitioners.
Lastly, we take a comparative approach, exploring the history and significance of ritual nudity in various belief systems, including Christianity, Jainism, Witchcraft, and Paganism, highlighting their unique perspectives and practices. Tune in to this thought-provoking episode as we navigate the rich tapestry of skyclad ritual nudity and its diverse cultural and spiritual contexts.

Although Stevie has denied "rumors" of being a WITCH over her extensive career, real practicing witches have adopted her as their SUPREME, or at the very least, Pop Pantheon! We'll chat about the mystical presence she possesses that has us all dreaming of being initiated into her "Sisters of the Moon" club. The Stinas also daydream about a Stevie collab and reminisce on how her music has become engrained into their own lives throughout the years.
In this beast of an episode, we go down the rabbit hole and bring you 3.5 hours of Stevie Nicks content!

Which would you choose, Courage or Caution for your tea? Magnolia Street resides at the intersection of science, history, magic, and folklore. In today's episode, we're going to dive into the world of tea and Tasseomancy, the art of reading tea leaves. This was our Patreon Pick and the Stinas underestimated the size of the rabbit hole they were about to venture down!
Tea has a long and fascinating history, dating back thousands of years to ancient China. We'll explore the science behind tea's health benefits and delve into this beloved beverage's cultural significance.
But tea is not just a drink – it's also a powerful tool for divination. Tasseomancy, or the art of reading tea leaves, has been practiced for centuries in many cultures around the world. We also have some anecdotes from Rev. Judith Laxer, a modern-day mystic, keynote speaker, teacher of the magickal arts and mysteries, and author of "Along the Wheel of Time: Sacred Stories for Nature Lovers".Judith takes us step by step through the mystical process of Tasseomancy and lends us her own personal key of symbols she uses when interpreting tea leaves for herself and others.
Finally, Justina and Kristina will be brewing up a cuppa, and try their hand at reading tea leaves for each other while chatting about some of their favorite Tea Leaf Reading movie scenes in pop culture! What do YOU see? A Giraffe? or a Black Spectral DOG!?!?
Pour yourself a cup and try some Tasseomancy right along with us!

In this episode, we'll dissect the book and the movies and analyze some passages that really spotlight the hardships that the Owens family went through, as a result of their family's tumultuous past. Why was it so important for Sally to come out and finally call herself what she was - A WITCH!?! Join us down the rabbit hole as we explore and answer these burning questions...
The Stinas then get a bit introspective, reminisce about their own journeys out of the broom closet, and give you some tips on how you can ease on out of the shadows of shame and step into your power so you can confidently call yourself what you really are: A WITCH!
