Is The Story of B by Daniel Quinn really the best book on animism? I picked it up expecting a deep dive into animism as a worldview and a practice. In this review, I look at the plot, the message, and where the book falls short.The Story of B follows Father Jared Osborne, a Catholic priest sent to investigate a mysterious lecturer known only as “B.” Through B’s lectures, Quinn expands on the ideas he introduced in Ishmael: the divide between “Takers” and “Leavers,” the “Great Forgetting,” the rise of salvationist religions, and animism as humanity’s original way of understanding the world.The book raises powerful questions, but it has real problems. The thriller plot is unconvincing, the claims about what civilization causes overreach, and animism is never defined beyond a hunter-gatherer lifestyle lived in line with natural law. Spare the rod, spoil the child" gets passed down as if it's ancient, biblical, unquestionable — but it isn't even from scripture. It's a misquoted line from a 17th-century poem, grafted onto Proverbs and hardened into folk law.More than that: it's a piece of colonized thinking. You say yes when your whole body is screaming no. You apologize for taking up space you were never given in the first place. Someone touches you, interrupts you, "just needs five minutes" of you — again — and you let it happen, and you smile, and later you can't figure out why you feel so hollowed out.You've been told this is just what being a good person costs. It isn't. It's a boundary being walked through like it was never there at all — and it's happening so often, in ways so small and so normal, that you've stopped even clocking it as a violation.There's an old teaching about a gate that nobody's allowed to walk straight through the middle of. Not because someone's standing guard — because the ground itself asks for a pause first. What would it mean to treat your own life that way? Your silence. Your time. Your body. Your "no." What if the exhaustion you keep calling burnout is actually grief, for a self you were never allowed to close a door on?This episode is the one where we name what's actually been happening — and where we start putting the gate back up because sovereignty depends upon healthy boundaries.

Before you can think for yourself, you first have to learn to see for yourself. In Episode 4 of Independent Thought, we look at something simple but powerful: the idea that you can meet reality directly, before it gets filtered through other people's beliefs, other people's wants, and all the noise around you.

We'll talk about animist traditions that train you to pay attention before they ask you to believe anything. We'll look at René Girard's idea of "mimetic desire" — the theory that a lot of what we want isn't really ours, we just copied it from someone else. And we'll talk about oracles and divination, not as fortune-telling, but as simple tools people have used for thousands of years to check in with themselves.

Along the way, we'll ask some good questions: What do you actually trust? What counts as real evidence to you? And what's the real difference between a community and a herd?

We explore interoception — the sense through which you feel yourself and the world — and how trauma and modern life together turn it down. We talk about why genuine empathy requires a body that is available to receive, and why that availability is exactly what gets shut down under prolonged stress. And we hold space for the particular grief of ancestral disconnection: when the lineage that held these practices was broken before we were born.

Talking to Spirit is part of life. You don't have to be a shaman to do it. Everyone can do it easily. In today's episode, Richard Martini shows us how!

Writer/Director/Author Richard is an award winning filmmaker, who has written and/or directed 8 theatrical features, and a number of documentaries. His first book, "Flipside: A Tourist's Guide on How to Navigate the Afterlife" went to #1 twice at Amazon in all its genres. The book is based on transcripts of a documentary he made which is available at Amazon (Flipside: A Journey Into the Afterlife) and Gaiam TV.

His books "It's a Wonderful Afterlife" volumes one and two expands the research into the afterlife from Michael Newton's work, to include interviews with a number of scientists in the field of consciousness, including Dr. Bruce Greyson, Dr. Mario Beauregard, and Gary Schwartz Phd. He also examines near death experiences and compares their accounts to similar ones during between life sessions (the technique used by Michael Newton that allows people to access the between lives realm, or LBLs) and other examples (OBEs) where people may have lost their ability to think normally, but are having the same experiences.

In "Hacking the Afterlife" he interviews mediums and explores "interviewing people no longer on the planet." As Gary Schwartz put it after reading "Flipside" “Inspiring, well written and entertaining. The kind of book where once you have read it, you will no longer be able to see the world in the same way again.”
