Porn and The Gospel

Every man of God who is struggling with porn wants to be free.  In this episode, I'll walk through what I see as four pillars of the man of God who finds freedom. These can all be found in 2 Samual 10.

How does Jesus respond to our sins? How did He respond to the woman caught in adultery and brought before Him by the scribes and Pharisees? In this episode, we dive into the powerful words of Jesus in this encounter and how they apply to us, His followers.

It says in John 7 that Jesus caused a division among those who heard him. Some believed while others wanted him arrested.  But even in the life of a follower, he can cause division. He will not allow us to sit on the fence and be casual bystanders in this life.  In this episode we will discuss the importance of commitment.

Let's face it: I've made every mistake in the book when it comes to living a life of sexual integrity. And now that I speak with men every week about the same thing, I have noticed a BIG mistake that most of them are making. Listen in to find out what that mistake is and how you can avoid it.

Jesus did not seek His own glory. He constantly reminded people of this throughout the book of John.  His chief aim was to glorify God in all things. And He did that by telling the truth and having no falsehood in Himself. It had me asking the question, "How often do I seek my own glory even by telling lies of omission (not saying things I should be saying)? Hiding when I should be confessing...boasting when I should be fasting...laughing when I should be weeping." My flesh hates submission to God. But because the Spirit of Christ lives in me, HE causes my spirit to rejoice at the thought of submission to God. So much of it comes down to the truth. Am I willing to embrace the truth even when it reveals me to be a weak sinner? This is what Paul said: "But He said to me, 'My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is made perfect in weakness.' Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong." - 2 Corinthians 12:9-10

John 7:17 - If anyone's will is to do God's will, he will know whether the teaching is from God or whether I am speaking on my own authority. Is your will to do God's will?  So often, men talk about obedience without actually obeying. And with that repetitive behavior comes a great danger - missing the truth of God's message. In today's episode, we dive into hearing the truth with the intention of obeying it. This is the man who will be blessed.

Brothers, we want to be done forever with a lifestyle of habitual sexual sin.  This means that we must follow and set our minds on the things that the Spirit has His mind set on. So what does this mean for us? It means that it's possible to be a believer but remain a child in the faith stuck in the nurseries of our churches. But that is not where we're meant to stay. We have been told we need to grow up and make disciples. Babies can't make disciples; instead, they depend on others to serve them. We all have this great Enemy of our soul. He's relentless and takes no days off. However, We have a God who doesn't tremble or hide. We have a God who goes to war with us and for us. In today's episode, I am going to share how you can defeat your greatest enemy.

What does clinging to God's testimonies look like? When I think or picture clinging to something? It's having a death grip on something. I will not let go. I must not let go. It's very different than drifting away. When I drift away. It's because I'm not anchored. In truth, and I'm not clinging to God's word. Spurgeon says this. If we are not true to our profession, we may be left to reap the fruit of our folly, which will be a bitter thing called shame. A believer should never be ashamed but act the part of a brave person who has done nothing to be ashamed of in believing his God. If I am diligent in clinging to God, he will ensure that my grip does not fail, then I will have nothing to feel shame about. My shame is heightened when I am not safe and secure in God's estimate of me of my sonship of my standing with him. But when I am safe, secure and without shame, I see things as they are in light of eternity. Lord, keep me by Your grace as I use my grip to cling to you. When I am without shame and feel the Lord holding me close to him and willing obedience, then I feel free and full of life and my desire to run on his highway is strong. I'm carried in speed by His Spirit, hungry for greater holiness and obedience than I now have. Shame is a burden and keeps us from running our race. Isn't that what Satan desires? Burdened and shame-filled Christians? The Man With nothing to hide is the most powerful and joyful man in the room.

It's the New Year when everyone imagines new beginnings, new habits, new goals, and new commitment. This is good. It's good to think of a new year like a new lifetime. There's the possibility of massive change in your life. I want to encourage you in those things. But I also want you to understand the difference between Level 10 and Level 2 so that you can make a determination on which one you are and you want to be.

I've been struggling the past couple of weeks with some disturbing news. I recorded this episode out of a deep desire to warn, exhort, encourage, and give you a glimpse of what happens in a man's life when there is no war against sexual sin. In Psalms 101, we read some serious resolutions from David. These should be both an encouragement and a warning for us, brothers. Notice the "I WILL" and "I WILL NOT" statements from David. The praise of God should always lead us to promise, and that's what we see here. Finally, these were never meant to be done in isolation. David needed men in his life just like we do.

Every man has an invitation. And God provides the inspiration. But we can't leave without noticing that we also have a warning. As we break down Pslams 95, we'll see all three elements and how YOU can become a man of God who is the man of valor you desire to be. Psalms 95 1Oh come, let us sing to the LORD; let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation! 2 Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving; let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise! 3 For the LORD is a great God, and a great King above all gods. 4 In his hand are the depths of the earth; the heights of the mountains are his, also. 5 The sea is his, for he made it, and his hands formed the dry land. 6 Oh come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the LORD, our Maker! 7 For he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand. Today, if you hear his voice, 8 do not harden your hearts, as at Meribah, as on the day at Massah in the wilderness, 9 when your fathers put me to the test and put me to the proof, though they had seen my work. 10 For forty years, I loathed that generation and said, “They are a people who go astray in their heart, and they have not known my ways.” 11 Therefore I swore in my wrath, “They shall not enter my rest.”

You have been called, Brother. But will you answer the call? Or will you run and run and run for miles on end without making any progress? It's the difference between running on a treadmill and running in a race. In only one of those activities do you win the prize.

Every man who is a disciple of Christ has at least one thing in common. They have been called to bear fruit for the glory of God. Every man should have ambitions to undertake something great for God. In this episode, we'll examine the call of Gideon in Judges 6 and discuss THREE PRINCIPLES TO BECOME A MAN OF VALOR yourself.

Every man can experience great joy...and great distress and trouble. When it comes to , most believers who are struggling are faced with feelings and shame and guilt, and their stories can even turn suicidal or leave them without hope. I know I've been hopeless before and just told myself, "I'll never be 100% free..." That, my friend, is a lie. And in this episode, I will show you how to examine and destroy your lies.

Acts 3:1-101 Now Peter and John were going up to the temple at the hour of prayer, the ninth hour. 2 And a man lame from birth was being carried, whom they laid daily at the gate of the temple that is called the Beautiful Gate to ask alms of those entering the temple. 3 Seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple, he asked to receive alms. 4 And Peter directed his gaze at him, as did John, and said, “Look at us.” 5 And he fixed his attention on them, expecting to receive something from them. 6 But Peter said, “I have no silver and gold, but what I do have I give to you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk!” 7 And he took him by the right hand and raised him up, and immediately his feet and ankles were made strong. 8 And leaping up, he stood and began to walk, and entered the temple with them, walking and leaping and praising God. 9 And all the people saw him walking and praising God, 10 and recognized him as the one who sat at the Beautiful Gate of the temple, asking for alms. And they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him.

Judges 1:19-21 19 And the LORD was with Judah, and he took possession of the hill country, but he could not drive out the inhabitants of the plain because they had chariots of iron. 20 And Hebron was given to Caleb, as Moses had said. And he drove out from it the three sons of Anak. 21 But the people of Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites who lived in Jerusalem, so the Jebusites have lived with the people of Benjamin in Jerusalem to this day.

One of the most amazing things about the Lord is that He seeks and saves us and then gently deals with us throughout this life. He desires for us to find our joy in Him so much that He is relentless in His sanctifying grace. There were times when I felt like giving up or losing heart...I'm sure you've felt that way as well. Instead, use the gift of confession as the gift it was meant to be. We will never find purifying power hiding in darkness or cherishing our sin. Psalms 66:16-20 16 Come and hear, all you who fear God, and I will tell what he has done for my soul. 17 I cried to him with my mouth, and high praise was on my tongue. 18 If I had cherished iniquity in my heart, the Lord would not have listened. 19 But truly God has listened; he has attended to the voice of my prayer. 20 Blessed be God, because he has not rejected my prayer or removed his steadfast love from me! 2 Corinthians 4:16-18 16 So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. 17 For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, 18 as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.

In this episode, I'll describe the three things that I see men who are walking in freedom from pornography doing on a consistent basis. I'll also share what has been on my heart for men in the church and girls trapped in slavery. Stay tuned.

Psalms 27:1 - OF DAVID "The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?" How would your life change if you truly believed that God is your light, your salvation, and your stronghold? You wouldn't be afraid anymore. And not only that...but you would joyfully draw water from the well of God's salvation. You would leave behind the dirty water of the world that is diluted and polluted.

There is enormous power in the truth. I've heard it said that the man with nothing to hide is the most powerful man in the room. There is a foundation on which all men must begin to build a different reality than the one they've been stuck in for so long. In this episode, we'll look at what that foundation is and discuss why it's so important.

In Psalms 20 and 21, we read David's prayers for God's power and protection as he goes to war as well as his praise for certain victory. Psalms 5:3 3 O LORD, in the morning you hear my voice; in the morning I prepare a sacrifice for you and watch. David put it this way: “In the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and will look up” (Ps. 5:3). This Scripture means that he marshaled his thoughts like men of war or that he aimed his prayers like arrows. He did not take the arrow and put it on the bowstring and just shoot anywhere. After he had taken out the chosen shaft and fitted it to the string, he took deliberate aim. He looked—looked well—at the center of the target. He kept his eye fixed on it, directing his prayer, and then drew his bow with all his strength and let the arrow fly. Then, when the shaft had left his hand, what did he say? “[I] will look up.” He looked up to see where the arrow went, to see what effect it had, for he expected an answer to his prayers; he was not like many who scarcely think of their prayers after they have uttered them. David knew that he had an engagement before him that required all his mental powers. He marshaled his faculties and went about the work in a workmanlike manner, as one who believed in it and meant to succeed. - Charles Spurgeon

The "secret" is not so secret. Yet men still struggle to take hold of this gift, this weapon, that has the power to move them from the prison of to the peak of purity. Brother - this is your DUTY that, if given attention, will become your Daily Addiction. And this is the path that leads to freedom.

You are an endurance athlete - spiritually speaking. The Old and New Testaments are full of encouragement to remain steadfast, endure until the end, and run the race of endurance. What does every endurance athlete need? Aid stations. Aid stations give an athlete four primary things: 1. Water 2. Food 3. Encouragement 4. Google all of the promises of God and see if they don't prove to be a weapon against the lies of our enemy. "There is a lifting up of the head by elevating to office, as with Pharaoh's butler; this we trace to the divine appointment. There is a lifting up in honor after shame, in health after sickness, in gladness after sorrow, in restoration after a fall, in victory after a temporary defeat; in all these respects the Lord is the lifter up of our head." ~ Spurgeon

How do you quit for good? Your mind is either a weapon or an enemy. You decide. In this episode, we'll walk through specific thoughts from God's Word on how the mind is used to either remember and rejoice in God or forget His goodness and steadfast love.

What is hypocrisy? When I live or act in contradiction to who I portray myself to be. I remembered how subtle this can be this past Friday night. Learn from my hypocrisy and change your own path. Jeremiah 17:9-109 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?10 “I the Lord search the heart and test the mind,[b]to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his deeds.”

What does it mean that The Way (Jesus) is Unstoppable. It means that when you have submitted to the rule and reign of Christ in your life, you will bear fruit in keeping with the truth. Mark 4:20 "But those that were sown on the good soil are the ones who hear the word and accept it and bear fruit, thirtyfold and sixtyfold and a hundredfold." What is that fruit? Its practical outworking will look different in everyone's life, but it will most definitely be the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23). But what about the life of addiction? It will also bear fruit. Jeremiah 17:5-6 says... 5 Thus says the Lord: “Cursed is the man who trusts in man and makes flesh his strength, whose heart turns away from the Lord. 6 He is like a shrub in the desert, and shall not see any good come. He shall dwell in the parched places of the wilderness, in an uninhabited salt land. And later in the same chapter... 9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it? 10 “I the Lord search the heart and test the mind, to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his deeds.” Every day we're producing fruit. That fruit comes from being planted and nourished by the Word of God in the presence of Christ. Or it comes from a life wandering in a spiritual desert. That fruit will not provide any nourishment for the man or his family.

The way is not only uncommon, but it's also uncomfortable. What does it mean to choose The Way over comfort in this life? In this episode, we'll look at several passages that demonstrate that the Way of Christ...a life with Christ...does not mean one pursuing the most comfortable life here. We have a different Way. We are seeking things to come. In what ways has been used to keep you from dealing with uncomfortable truths? Has using been an escape to a life of comfort instead of addressing issues that have lingered for months, years, decades?

Jesus said He is the Way... What does it mean for Jesus to be THE WAY not only to eternal life with the Father but to a life of fruitful service here on earth? First, it is an uncommon life. The problem with many men today is our desire to follow Jesus...but do it our way. But the life of freedom from is anything but common. In this episode 1 of 3, we'll break down what the uncommon way looks like in the Word.

Psalm 107 shows us what desperate men do in desperate situations. They call out to God. But one of the biggest challenges...your greatest enemy...is that you don't believe your life of is a desperate situation. You've managed to hide it and lie about it so long, that it's a part of your life. But in the back of your mind, you believe it can come unraveled at any moment...your life can spiral out of control if the truth comes out. You don't think you're desperate, and that's why you stay trapped in the pit of . Let's walk through Psalm 107, 2 Corinthians 4, and Galatians 1 to see, maybe for the first time, that your life of 'peace' is actually one of your greatest enemies.

When I speak with Christian men about quitting forever, one of the first things we discuss is their past. We talk about the real struggle that is involved in Christian men leaving behind...not just for a day or a week or a month...but forever. Many times this has been going on for decades. That's not unusual. At this point in our discussion, it's important for them to know that they are demonstrating one of the requirements for freedom from . But it takes two. In this podcast episode, we use Psalms 88, Hebrews 10, and 2 Peter 1 to uncover these two requirements and put them in perspective for the man struggling to quit and masturbation forever.

Why do good Christian men say trapped in The Circle of Insanity for decades and decades? Our Mission is Simple God has commanded us to put to death whatever is sinful in us and set our minds on things above where Christ is seated in victory. Colossians 3:1-5 It is a very similar command that God gave King Saul, and yet he believed that partial obedience was good enough for God. Where in your life...and in my life...are we holding on to sin and pretending that God doesn't care? For a lot of men, pornography is one enemy of God we keep alive like Saul kept king Agag alive. 1 Samuel 15:2-3 2 Thus says the LORD of hosts, ‘I have noted what Amalek did to Israel in opposing them on the way when they came up out of Egypt. 3 Now go and strike Amalek and devote to destruction all that they have. Do not spare them, but kill both man and woman, child and infant, ox and sheep, camel and donkey.’” 1 Samuel 15:7-9 7 And Saul defeated the Amalekites from Havilah as far as Shur, which is east of Egypt. 8 And he took Agag the king of the Amalekites alive and devoted to destruction all the people with the edge of the sword. 9 But Saul and the people spared Agag and the best of the sheep and of the oxen and of the fattened calves and the lambs, and all that was good, and would not utterly destroy them. All that was despised and worthless they devoted to destruction.

As men...as God's people...we are always doing something or not doing something based on WHO we believe ourselves to be. God's people throughout history have struggled with their identity. And because of this, they struggled with sin. In this episode, we will look at how Israel's request for a king to look 'like all the other nations' was not only a rebellion against God, but it was a refusal of the identity He gave them when He called them out of Egypt. Are we any different today? When we choose NOT to be identified as God's people - set apart as holy - it's easy to see as a part of who we are. When this happens, we remain trapped.

1 Samuel paints a sobering picture of God's people...even His judge Eli...taking His Word lightly. The result is disastrous for the people. But God raises up Samuel who ministers before the Lord and grows in both stature and in favor with God and the people (sounds familiar). But Samuel's word is not enough...the people must suffer a humiliating defeat by their enemies before they repent, put away their idols, and call on God to save them from their enemies. In this case, as in many times throughout God's Word, purity precedes power.

Do your prayers reveal.... I live in comfort and ease as far as the eye can see...I am content to offer the customary prayers of a comfortable Christian. I live as if I were in an orphanage where my father is absent and he will not hear my cries or answer my calls to Him. I live in desperate need of my Father's help. My cry of prayer is a cry of faith and arises because I believe God is a Father who is able (powerful enough) and willing (loving enough) to answer. "What creates great praying? 1 Thessalonians 3:1-5 Therefore when we could bear it no longer, we were willing to be left behind at Athens alone, and we sent Timothy, our brother and God's coworker in the gospel of Christ, to establish and exhort you in your faith, that no one be moved by these afflictions. For you yourselves know that we are destined for this. For when we were with you, we kept telling you beforehand that we were to suffer affliction, just as it has come to pass, and just as you know. For this reason, when I could bear it no longer, I sent to learn about your faith, for fear that somehow the tempter had tempted you and our labor would be in vain.

You and I don't have much time. In fact, we don't know the day or hour we will draw our last breath. Yet we live as if we are never going to die. Never going to meet Christ face to face and give an account of how we spent our lives. In this episode, I want to remind you of the urgency with which we must live our lives. We cannot afford to waste another day, week, month, year, or decade on and masturbation. You must resolve to do whatever it takes for as long as it takes to replace with the far surpassing joy of the gospel. It does not happen overnight, but it will have it if you don't give up.

YOU and I need to receive this Word if we desire it to Work in us. 1 Thessalonians 2:13: And we also thank God constantly for this, that when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men but as what it really is, the word of God, which is at work in you believers.

If you are a true follower of Jesus Christ, Paul charges you to 'walk in a manner worthy of God.' (1 Thessalonians 2:12) What does that look like? What does it mean? In this episode, I point to three imperatives for every man who wants to live a significant life for Christ...for the man tired of his addiction to and masturbation...for the man who desires to walk in a manner worthy of God.

There is a Psalm I love that says: "So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom." Psalms 90:12 Numbering our days is just a way of remembering that life is short and we're not guaranteed tomorrow. John Piper says great wisdom...life-revolutionizing wisdom...comes from thinking about these things from time to time. I like to think of the end of a year like the end of a lifetime. As I look back on 2021, I can ask questions like... Did I live this year well? What needs to change? How do those I care about most feel about how I spent 2021? Don't waste 2022 on resolutions that are promised today and forgotten tomorrow. Spend time thinking and praying deeply for a life-changing 2022. One in which you finally become serious about killing this sin in your life. In this episode, we explore 1 Thessalonians 1 and Paul's encouragement to the church at the gospel-centered change that had taken place in their lives. There are lessons for us all over these first several verses. Be encouraged...God is greater and more powerful than your problem with . But it requires you to become deadly serious about transformation.

Galatians 5:17For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do. “Sin is always acting, always conceiving, always seducing and tempting. Who can say that he had ever anything to do with God or for God, that indwelling sin had not corrupted what he did? Do you kill sin? Do you make it your daily work? Hebrews 6:7-87 For land that has drunk the rain that often falls on it, and produces a crop useful to those for whose sake it is cultivated, receives a blessing from God. 8 But if it bears thorns and thistles, it is worthless and near to being cursed, and its end is to be burned. If you are a follower of Christ, your life is meant to produce a useful crop that brings glory to God and support for your brothers and sisters in Christ. But in our struggle with , we realize that we're not much help to anyone. It becomes such a problem that many question their salvation. In today's podcast, we're going to look at what the Hebrew writer points to as evidence that you have genuine faith and that the faith you have will produce good fruit.

A lot of people want to change without changing anything. Example - “I want to quit looking at for good.” OR “I want to get in shape.” - so many examples to choose from. And yet nothing really changes in their life. They’re still looking at the same social accounts, still have the same morning routine, evening routine, eating habits, workout habits. Instead, they download some internet blocking software that might make the change for them. Or take a pill. Or blame the government or their spouse or anyone else but themselves. Over the past three years, I have learned a lot about change mostly through trial and error and failing and a little success. In my opinion, the best way to change is to identify small daily opportunities (and there are many to choose from) that will produce large changes over time. In this podcast, I'll walk you through nine important changes I made in my life that were part of my freedom from pornography. There’s nothing complicated about any of these. As a matter of fact, someone might say these are ‘common sense.’ But common sense isn’t common practice from what I’ve observed. And even though they’re simple. They are easier not to do than to do. That is a choice you have to make.

There are many answers to these questions...many complex answers. But I can point to at least three indicators...three signs...that a follower of Christ will continue struggling with . There are three types of men in this world and you need to know which one you are. This is especially vital when it comes to how each of these men responds to the Word of God. Why is this relevant? Because this world is not our home and we have a promised rest for any who persevere to the end. Hebrews 4:11-13 11 Let us therefore strive to enter that rest, so that no one may fall by the same sort of disobedience. 12 For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. 13 And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account. Listen in to determine the type of man you are...and if you find that it's not the man you want to be, there's good news...God is patient with us and promises to transform us.

I was speaking with a man this morning about his addiction and he described all of his issues: and acting out Anger Depression Loneliness And then I asked him a question we all need to ask...I said, "Those all sound like symptoms and not the deep root issue...what do you think the issue beneath the surface is?" And that's the subject of this podcast. But we don't stop with the root...we'll also explore the remedy. Hebrews 3:12-13"12 Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from the living God. 13 But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called “today,” that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin."

Anytime you want to change something in your life...to grow...to improve...you should expect resistance. Change is hard. But as believers, we're after transformation (Romans 12:2). And that's impossible without the supernatural work of the Spirit. If a man commits to being transformed, the first thing he needs to know is that there will be resistance. There will be resistance from within and without. But if you are constantly asking yourself 'who am I becoming' and aligning your thoughts, patterns, habits, and addictions accordingly, then resistance becomes a signal that you're moving in the right direction. If there's no resistance in your life, it's likely because you're comfortable with your current status quo. In this episode, we'll examine how God's people have experienced resistance for thousands of years and what both Peter and the author of Hebrews command God's people to do/believe in order to overcome the resistance. YOU CAN BE SAVED BUT STILL BE A SLAVE! We don't like to admit this, but it's the truth. Men who are stuck in the pit of feel like they're in a prison they can't escape. They desperately want to escape but they can't find a way out. We read in Hebrews 2:14-15n that the death of Jesus on the cross accomplished two things: He destroyed the devil He delivered us from lifelong slavery He's talking about eternal salvation in this passage. And it's true if we're God's children, we are no longer slaves. But it's also true that many still live as slaves and not as free men. When is a part of your life it's a clear indication that you are living not a victorious life, but an anxious, powerless, purposeless life with little to no power before God. It always blew my mind to walk into a community and see how people lived for generations. They lived with no access to clean water which meant certain results in their homes: Poverty Sickness Lack of education Women and children suffered the most But I was no different inwardly. The only difference was I was able to hide my sickness and spiritual poverty from my wife, my friends, my church. All the while pretending I had everything under control. In this episode, we are going to discuss the desperate need of men who are willing tell the truth. Men who are willing to face the facts of their situation. Pilate asked Jesus a very powerful question, "What is truth?" This is a questions worth exploring because if we're not dealing with the truth of our current condition, it's a clear indication we're lying to ourselves. The passage we'll look at is found in Psalm 139.
