At TFC, we believe that restoring natural foot function starts from the ground up. From crawling as babies to standing on our own two feet, human development is grounded—literally—in floor-based movement. But in modern Western culture, our relationship with the ground is often one of the first things we lose. Chairs, shoes, and sedentary habits slowly disconnect us from the surface that once shaped our strength, balance, and confidence. While floor movement is encouraged in children, it’s often abandoned in adulthood. In this episode, taken from our Foot Restoration Program, we explore why that disconnect matters—and how returning to the ground might just improve your mobility, stability, and longevity.
You’ll hear from Tom Williams (TFC Head Physio) and Jim Dooner (TFC Head of Training) as they unpack the science, stories, and practical tools behind ground-based movement. From evolutionary roots to everyday applications, this conversation is your invitation to re-engage with one of the most fundamental aspects of human health.
Whether you're new to natural movement or deep into your journey, this episode will leave you looking at the ground in a whole new way.

In today’s episode, we’re exploring the mental side of movement: how your mindset shapes your habits, your healing, and your long-term progress. You'll hear from both Jim and Tom as they unpack what mindset actually means, where it comes from, and why it's the first foundation in any meaningful rehab journey.
We’ll talk about the difference between a fixed and growth mindset, how beliefs influence your behaviours, and how your self-talk can either limit or liberate you. We also dive into real-life examples and offer practical tools you can use to build confidence, self-efficacy, and momentum — starting right now.

In today's episode we’re joined by Natalie Headdings a movement educator, doula, and pelvic floor specialist whose work blends deep anatomical understanding with practical tools that help people reconnect with their bodies.
Natalie has spent years guiding women through breath and movement, and her insights around the pelvic floor are truly game-changing.
In this conversation, we explore the deep connection between foot function and pelvic floor health, and how modern lifestyles, sedentary habits, and footwear choices can quietly erode the strength and awareness we’re meant to have in these foundational systems.
We unpack how breathing, balancing, and simply paying attention can start to restore what’s been lost, especially for women navigating pregnancy, birth or postpartum recovery.
This is a powerful, educational, and empowering conversation — one that reframes foot pain and pelvic floor dysfunction not as lifelong conditions, but as trainable and recoverable outcomes.

In today’s episode, we are joined by Chad Little, a footwear designer who once worked for Nike designing shoes like Air Jordans but now he’s the founder of CODE Footwear, a company making waves by putting foot health first. Chad’s story is a powerful example of what happens when curiosity, truth, and creativity collide.

In this episode, Jim sits down with David Weck, a pioneering movement coach, inventor of the BOSU Ball and the founder of Weck Method—based in San Diego, California. Jim was first introduced to David’s work through rope flow in 2020 during lockdowns, casually exploring the practice as a fun way to mobilise his shoulders and thoracic spine. However, it wasn’t until a visit to the Weck Lab in 2024 that his perspective dramatically shifted. Through hands-on experience and in-depth education with David and the team, Jim deepened his understanding of the powerful rotational movement principles behind Weck Method - applicable not only to athletic performance but to restoring foundational human movement in everyday life.
Since then, Jim has attended multiple Weck Method certifications and incorporated its tools and principles into his own training and TFC’s programming. The impact has been game-changing - transforming how he trains, moves, and even walks and runs. Rope flow and rotational drills have now made their way into weekly team training sessions at TFC and community classes with powerful feedback from participants.
This episode captures that learning journey and the sit-down conversation with David Weck himself, recorded during Jim’s visit to the Weck Lab. While the team encountered technical issues with the audio recording, they’ve worked to preserve the best parts of this passionate, no-holds-barred discussion - so please excuse the occasional jump in the conversation. Listeners should also note that the episode contains some strong language, reflecting David’s unfiltered passion for movement education and his critiques of common myths in the fitness world. If this episode sparks your curiosity about Weck Method, Jim highly recommends experiencing it firsthand—either through a local coach or by exploring the many free resources available online.Guest Links:

This week on Restore To Explore, we're honouring the life and legacy of Robert Fliri, a true pioneer in the barefoot movement and the creator of Vibram FiveFingers. Robert’s vision changed the way people think about footwear, bringing them closer to nature with every step. Tragically, Robert passed away last week while descending the Punta d'Oberettes ice wall in the Italian Alps. He was not just a designer but a passionate and experienced mountaineer, deeply connected to the natural world he sought to bring people back to, through his work.
As a tribute, we're re-releasing a bite-sized episode from my conversation with Robert, one that captures his passion, innovation, and philosophy on movement. In this snippet Robert responds to the backlash targeted towards his designs in the early-stages, how far the barefoot movement has come since and what he believes it will take for foot health to become a priority in our modern culture. This would tragically prove to be his final public interview. His impact on the world of footwear and natural movement will live on through his designs and the countless people he has inspired. Let’s take a moment to reflect on his incredible legacy.
You can listen to the full conversation that was released last season here.

Robert Fliri, an Italian designer and innovator in footwear design, shares his journey of reconnecting with nature and developing the concept of natural footwear. He grew up in the mountains, surrounded by nature, and was always drawn to technology and mechanical engineering. However, he felt a disconnect when he entered the world of design and decided to create a footwear prototype that would allow him to feel the ground like he was barefoot but with protection. This led to the development of Vibram FiveFingers, a glove-like shoe that revolutionized the way people think about footwear. The conversation explores the journey of Vibram's FiveFingers shoes and the natural foot movement.
Robert Fliri, a product developer at Vibram, discusses the importance of finding balance in movement and not pushing oneself beyond their limits. He emphasizes the idea of using footwear as tools to extend human capabilities, but also recognizes the value of the human foot as the perfect tool for running and walking.
The conversation delves into the initial response to FiveFingers, the challenges faced in bringing the product to market, and the controversy surrounding the health benefits of the shoe. It also touches on the need for proper education and a gradual transition when adopting a natural footwear approach. The conversation concludes with a discussion on the future of the natural foot movement and the potential for wider public adoption.Helpful Links:

Katy emphasizes the importance of considering purposeful, functional, and meaningful movement in the movement plan, and introduces the SLOTH time budget model to help categorize movements into different domains. The conversation covers various topics related to movement, sleep, and navigating the landscape of health and fitness advice.
Jim and Katy discuss the importance of movement in daily life and how it can be incorporated into different activities. In this week's episode of the Restore To Explore Podcast, Andy Bryant and Dr. Ray McClanahan dive deep into the topic of Natural Running & Mindful Movement. They draw from their own running experiences, sharing valuable lessons learned from injuries and the importance of setting realistic, achievable goals.
One key takeaway emphasized by both Andy and Ray is the significance of transitioning slowly when changing footwear, as it can significantly impact running technique and desired outcomes. They stress that there is no singular "perfect" running technique, highlighting the essence of Natural Running as a personalized approach rather than a one-size-fits-all solution.
Andy underscores the idea that providing the body with optimal conditions enables it to find its own effective running technique, while Ray reinforces the notion that there's no universal standard for Human Gait. Moreover, they discuss the critical impact of footwear on natural running gait, considering factors like heel elevation, cushioning, toe shape, and toe spring.
The conversation delves into the mindful aspect of running, particularly in minimal shoes or barefoot, where every step becomes a conscious experience, focusing on the present moment rather than performance metrics. Ultimately, they emphasize that the essence of running lies in individual goals and intentions, urging listeners to explore their unique journey in running for personal fulfillment and mindfulness.

We also chat about the value of kids spending time in nature, the meaning of truth and community, natural as a decentralized health network, the importance of soil health, the flaws of centralized medicine and the opportunities that companies have in the years ahead to be part of the solution, not the problem.
We talk about the sad reality that doctors and farmers are struggling within a paradigm dominated by chemicals and the potential that can be unlocked for human healing if we reconnect with the natural world and restore biodiversity in our soil, ecosystems and in our communities.
Zach finishes by sharing his definition of health which he was able to condense into 3 powerful words which I really appreciated.
I really enjoyed speaking with Zach and hope you enjoy listening to our conversation.

This week Nick, Jim and Mac dive into what it means to be a TFC Pro.
For those new to our community, a TFC Pro is not just a title; it embodies a commitment to the foot health revolution we’re helping forge. It signifies a dedication to understanding, promoting, and practicing the principles that have been at the heart of TFC's journey from its inception. Our mission has always been to shift the paradigm of foot health, turning away from quick fixes and towards holistic, foundational wellness. A TFC Pro is someone who stands with us on this mission, guiding and supporting others on their journey to foot freedom.
We launched the TFC Pro Membership in June of 2023 - as a way of uniting like-minded health and movement professionals around the world and connecting our community with people they can trust will help them put their best foot forward.
In today's episode, we unpack the ethos behind a TFC Pro, through the 'Ten Tenets of a TFC Pro’. These tenets underline the commitment of every TFC Pro, not just to advise, but to lead by example, embracing natural movement, advocating holistic health, and prioritizing lifelong learning.
For TFC Pros, it's about living the values, embodying the mission, and setting the bar in foot health. Whether you're a health or movement professional yourself or someone just getting started on your foot health path, this episode promises insights into what makes our TFC Pros stand out and why you should connect with one.

This week Nick, Mac and I explore the Evolution of our training philosophy and approach over the years, from where Nick started in his physio practice all the way through to our latest SoleMate training systems. Along the way we discuss the Protect - Correct - Develop framework, the integration of hardware and software, the concept of Restore to Explore as well as, of course, the importance of play-based training for building a more adaptable and resilient body and mind.
Towards the end we discuss the Seven Days of Play challenge, which we’ve actually decided to call the Play Is The Way challenge, but it does start with seven consecutive days exploring one of our beginner SoleMate Sessions each day. We have also created a Proof of Play log that will guide you every step of the way and help you track your progress. The idea is that you start with the seven days in a row, get hooked on the process and the progress and continue this as a daily habit.
We already have a bunch of legends leading the way with this challenge and supporting each other but of course the more the merrier so if you’re keen to get involved the next step is to join the community and download your Proof of Play log.

This episode is a deep dive into our core company values which are Truth, Fun and Community. This is the first in a series of podcasts that we recorded while we were on tour in the US, where we were having a lot of deep discussions about the evolution of TFC, our current philosophy and approach as well as where we’re heading in the future - and so these podcasts are our attempt to distill all of that into a digestible conversation that you can tune into.
We figured, what better place to start than with our core values which essentially guide everything that we do and also bind us together both as a team within our company and as a broader collective. We’ve been delving into the meaning of these values for the best part of a year since we identified them in November 2022 and have realised how deep each topic can go as well as how interrelated they all are.
So this is our first attempt at communicating that officially and somewhat concisely which was a really helpful process for us to go through and we hope that you find value in the discussion as well!

This week Nick speaks with Rina Harris who is a natural podiatrist from the United Kingdom
They start by talking about Rina’s story about why she became a podiatrist and her journey towards discovering natural podiatry as an alternative to conventional podiatry.
She talks about how her experience with pregnancy impacted her and reinforced the innate intelligence and capacity within her body. That insight led her to think differently about feet and ultimately shift how she practices podiatry.
They talk about natural footwear, restoring function at the feet and how her current approach is based on education instead of orthotics. Finished with Rina sharing some words of wisdom with conventional podiatrists who might be looking to take a different path in their profession.

This week is a special episode that was recorded on our recent trip to Clearwater in Florida where we hung out with Ben Patrick (aka Knees Over Toes Guy) and his team at the ATG headquarters. We had an epic time experiencing the ATG method firsthand, followed by recording this podcast and then running our Playshop there the next day.
This episode was actually recorded for the ATG podcast, so it’s essentially Ben Patrick and Derek Williams interviewing Nick and Jim all about our approach to feet, footwear and training so in that sense it’s a great overview of what we’re all about at TFC.
For anyone interested more in the ATG approach, we actually had Ben on our podcast a few years back, where he shares his story and approach to lower body training - obviously his personal focus is mostly on the knees due to his previous injury history but the ATG system is a really great holistic training methodology that can be amazing for lower body and whole body movement health so we definitely recommend checking out that episode as well as The ATG podcast itself and Ben’s YouTube channel The Knees Over Toes Guy if you’re keen to learn more - we also will be featured in a YouTube video on there soon, so stay tuned for that.Helpful Links:

This week Jim & Tom are back to explore the concept of Patella Tendinopathy, previously and more commonly known as Patella Tendonitis and more colloquially as Jumper’s knee, it is one of the most common causes of knee pain especially in active people and so will be the first in a series of episodes exploring different knee conditions - that’s right the boys are taking a break from the foot and ankle conditions to move up the chain but of course it’s all connected and especially with knee pain there tends to be a strong contribution from foot and ankle dysfunction that needs to be addressed.
Of course they discuss all this in more detail throughout the episode, along with some practical tips to help you navigate your rehab journey as efficiently and effectively as possible!

This week I catch up with Josh Stiles from Shamma Sandals, kicking off an exciting new chapter in our story. As we continue our mission to empower our listeners and change how we all think about our feet, we're thrilled to announce Shamma as our very first Natural Footwear partner!
We rigorously test the shoes of all of our partners to ensure they deliver on what they promise. As you’re about to hear, Shamma is a brand that's at the forefront of crafting genuine, foot-shaped sandals that embody the true essence of natural movement and foot health.
So, why are we teaming up with brands like Shamma? Because our missions are intertwined. Both of us are driven by the belief that footwear should be an extension of ourselves, allowing us to move freely, naturally, and comfortably.
It's about time that we, as a society, relearn the importance of treating our feet right. By partnering with leading brands in the natural footwear space, we aim to bring you exclusive insights, stories, and opportunities to make that switch to a healthier foot lifestyle while delivering leading TFC foot health education straight into the shoe boxes of footwear customers.

This week Jim and Mac explore the concept of the 'Cave of Comfort' which is an element of this new story that we’ve been crafting around the Journey to Foot Freedom. The basic premise is that most people are essentially reading from the wrong map, which means that even despite a lot of investment of time, money and energy, they can’t effectively progress towards true foot freedom and tend to end up further down this metaphorical cave of comfort.
So throughout this episode we talk through the evolutionary basis of comfort and why we naturally tend to seek comfort, we discuss the importance of exposure to discomfort to promote resilience and growth as well as the value of having a community of people around you who are on the same journey and can either inspire and guide you or who can be inspired and guided by you.We recorded this episode earlier in the year while we were out bush doing some filming - we had a rainy morning so we sat by the fire and recorded this conversation, so just to note that you will hear a bit of that white noise in the background, but the rest of the audio should be clear. We certainly enjoyed this setting and style of podcast so if you enjoy it too, please do let us know and feel free to send through requests of topics for us to dive into around the fire.
Also if you get value out of our podcasts in general then you can support us by sharing out our episodes with friend and family and also by leaving us a review where ever you usually listen to podcasts.

This week I chat to Arnaud and Dave Thuillier- the brothers behind an exciting new natural footwear brand. Fleeters have been designed with human and planetary health at their core to bridge the gap between fashion and function.
The sneakers tick all of the 4 Fs we look for in natural footwear here at TFC. They’re flat, flexible, foot-shaped and allow you to feel the ground beneath your feet plus, as Dave says, they’re funky too! In this episode we discuss how Arnaud, an osteopath from Paris, discovered the barefoot life with a little help from The Foot Collective and how the life-changing impacts he saw with his patients inspired Fleeters.
We also discuss what goes into designing the ultimate minimalist shoe, why educating customers about how to transition safely is so important and how you can help support their kickstarter campaign.

Katy Bowman is a Biomechanist and is the bestselling author of 9 books, including Move Your DNA, Whole-Body Barefoot, Grow Wild, and her latest book Rethink Your Position which is actually due to launch tomorrow, Thursday 11th May. You can learn more about Katy's new book here.
Katy has been a leading voice in the movement movement for over a decade and has pioneered the concept of Nutritious Movement, which is the name of her education company and is just frankly an amazing analogy to help us frame how movement affects all aspects of our health on a deep level.
In fact one of our first episodes on this podcast was actually a whole episode dedicated to exploring the concept of movement nutrition and obviously draws on Katy’s work heavily, and so that podcast would pair very well with this one - so if you’re keen to check that out first or straight after, it is all the way down in Season 1 Episode 3.
But throughout this episode, we discuss the broader concept of biomechanics, we delve into the difference between posture and alignment and explore how the way we move can influence how we feel and contribute to our experience of pain and injury.
We also delve into some key topics from Katy’s new book to help you build more awareness around your own alignment, movement and mindset. There’s obviously a huge amount that we didn’t get to cover, as the book goes into a really impressive amount of detail while still being really accessible to read and having read it back to front myself I can very honestly highly recommend it.
So I really enjoyed this conversation with Katy, I got a lot out of it myself and I know you will too - if you do find value in it, please let us know by leaving us a review on your podcast app and help us spread the message by sharing it out with family and friends.

Anya Jensen is the human behind a footwear review blog called Anyas reviews and also an online shoe store that sells natural footwear. As someone who started wearing orthotics at 9 years old and was debilitated by foot pain, Anya went down a path of personal exploration to figure out how to get out of pain once and for all.
Now through her work, she shares her experience to help others resolve their foot problems through her blog and natural footwear store which you can checkout on Anya's website here.
We talk about principles of natural footwear, and the sometimes painful yet very important business of selling natural footwear in order to make shoes that let your feet functional naturally available to more people.
It’s always a pleasure speaking to fellow humans who are working to help people improve their foot health and I hope you enjoy our conversation.
