- 537 - Abused, Homeless At 15 - The Brain Expert Who Was Raised In Hell | Nathan Wallis
Nathan Wallis grew up around alcoholism, violence, abuse and foster care.
He was homeless at 15, became a father young, went to counselling at 18 and somehow found his way into teaching, counselling and eventually a career helping people understand how our brains develop.
For parents, this episode is jam packed with good useful advice:
We talk about the importance of the first 1,000 days, tantrums, anxiety, daycare, discipline, screens, teenagers, social media, are today’s kids snowflakes, and why asking a kid, “What were you feeling?” can sometimes tell you far more than asking “What were you thinking?” (which, by the way, is the title of his brand-new book)
But this episode also gets into Nathan himself- the man behind the job. We talk about the childhood he survived, the people who saved him, meeting his biological father shortly before he died, and the parts of himself he’s still trying to understand.

Like a lot of Kiwis, I spent years saying, “I’ll look at my KiwiSaver account later.”
Turns out later comes around faster than you think, and the decisions you make now could be the difference between counting every dollar in retirement or having the freedom to take that trip of a lifetime you've always talked about.

Sun, 20 Sep 2026 - 1h 58min - 536 - Warriors Coach Andrew Webster On NRL Premierships, Leadership & Never Lowering The Bar
Andrew Webster (aka Webby) is the coach of the One.NZ Warriors.
This podcast first came out in January 2024.
I thought I’d reshare it in case you missed it because the Warriors, under Andrew Webster, have just completed their best season in 15 years.
Since arriving at Mount Smart to coach the Warriors three years ago, this guy has given fans plenty to get excited about.
But I wanted to find out who he is away from the game.
We talk about his wife Emily, becoming a dad, and the years he spent doing whatever work he could to keep chasing a coaching career.
Webby explains why he left Ivan Clary and the Penrith Panthers to coach the Warriors and what he learnt from Ivan, why he’s comfortable telling his players he loves them, the up the Wahs movement which started during his tenure, how long he plans to stay in New Zealand, his reason for making the players walk past his office every day and much more.
This podcast is a pretty good insight into the mind of one of rugby leagues truly great coaches. And beyond sport, just a very nice bloke

He built and sold the pet food business VIP and now owns four racetracks, including Highlands, Hampton Downs and Taupō Motorsport Park in New Zealand - Not bad from a kid who grew up in a wooden caravan!
We talk about losing his daughter to cancer, the loneliness that followed the breakdown of his 38 year marriage, the big wins and losses of his business life, the thrill of driving Michael Schumacers F1 car, almost dying in 2022, the buzz he got from giving life changing sums of money away to staff, his obsession with MAFS! Coming up- Retired New York fire fighter, lieutenant David Morkal

Dave spent 33 years with the New York City Fire Department.
Twenty-five years on from the attacks, he joins me to talk about the friends he lost, the responsibility of helping rebuild, and learning to live with what happened.

Wed, 09 Sep 2026 - 1h 15min - 533 - Erica Stanford On Cabinet, Kids, Coke Zero & The Job's Real Cost
Erica Stanford is one of the most formidable politicians in New Zealand and, by her own admission, much happier talking about policy than herself. But this conversation is about the person behind the portfolio.
Erica opens up about mum guilt, the sacrifices her family has made, the brutal pressure of politics and whether she sees herself as a future Prime Minister.
We also discover her obsession with Coke Zero, her love of Green Day and the wonderfully weird man she’s been with since she was a teenager. Erics is the Education Minister...but this podcast is about the woman behind the fancy job title.

Sun, 30 Aug 2026 - 46min - 530 - “They Called Me An Honorary White” - Sir Bryan Williams on 1970 South Africa Tour
Sir Bryan Williams is one of New Zealand rugby’s most influential figures. He played 113 matches for the All Blacks, including 38 Tests, and later coached Samoa, Auckland and the Hurricanes. He has also served as president of New Zealand Rugby and has been inducted into the World Rugby Hall of Fame.
The man known as Bee Gee was just 19 when he first became an All Black - and because of his Samoan heritage, Bryan could only enter apartheid-era South Africa after being classified as an “honorary white.” It was an appalling label, but declining the tour could have ended his international career before it had properly begun.

Wed, 26 Aug 2026 - 10min - 529 - Sharyn Casey on Miscarriage, Grief & Walking Away From Radio
By pure coincidence this conversation was recorded exactly 20 years to the day after Sharyn Casey and I first met.
Back then, she was 20 years old, wildly ambitious and by her own admission trying far too hard to make everyone like her.
Fast forward two decades and Sharyn has walked away from the radio job that shaped her entire adult identity - and she’s figuring out who she is without it. This conversation is funny, honest and, at times, very graphic. Listener discretion is advised.
Sharyn Casey is warm, chaotic, vulnerable, self-aware and very bloody funny. AND she is the more comfortable and content in her own skin than I have ever seen her before. At 40 she knows exactly who she is and she is very comfortable with who she is. And I am proud to be able to call her a friend.

Sun, 23 Aug 2026 - 2h 45min - 528 - Laurie Mains On His Rassie Erasmus Feud - And The '95 RWC Poisoning
At the time of publishing this, the All Blacks are back in South Africa for a tour that is being called “Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry”
And it’s hard to argue with that. The rivalry between these nations went up a notch at the 1995 world cup when the Springboks beat the All Blacks by 3 points in extra time.
In this FastCast, Laurie reflects on that 15–12 defeat at Ellis Park and the controversy surrounding it, including the forward-pass decision that denied Jonah Lomu a potential try and his long-held belief that members of the All Blacks squad were deliberately poisoned before the final.
The conversation then turns to Laurie’s bitter falling-out with current Springboks coach Rassie Erasmus.
Laurie coached Rassie at the Cats in South Africa during the early 2000s, but their relationship deteriorated amid disagreements over training, fitness, authority and the direction of the team.
If you search “Laurie Mains” you can listen top the full 2 hour conversation.

Wed, 19 Aug 2026 - 14min - 527 - NZ's Wildest Conservation Activist on Fighting Japanese Whalers & Being Jailed In Japan
Pete Bethune from Hamilton is one of the most unique and intriguing guests I’ve ever had on this podcast.
He’s worked on oil rigs, been bitten by a deadly snake, flown on the Concorde, spent $3 million building one of the coolest boats ever made and holds the world record for taking it round the world in the fastest time.
He then took that same boat to Antarctica to protest Japanese whaling and had it rammed in half by a huge security vessel. Then he ended up spending five months in a Japanese maximum-security prison.
And this is just the very small tip of a very large iceberg!
Pete talks about the decisions he’s proud of - and the one decision that still hurts. He speaks honestly about prison, PTSD, losing everything, and why he still lives with the goal of making the world a slightly better because he was in it.

New Zealand’s top content creator Louis Davis is back, and somehow, in the two years since we last spoke, life has become even more wild!
He’s written a book, finished 3rd on Celebrity Treasure Island, interviewed some of the biggest names on the planet, and taken his dad to Turkey for a brand-new smile.
But behind all that success are stories he hasn’t told on Tik Tok about ambition, his complex relationship with his dad and the eating disorder Louis has quietly lived with since he was eight years old.
That’s the first hour! Then the episode revisits Louis’s original podcast visit from 2024. That covers his relationship with his wife, the viral KFC wedding photo and his mission to change how Māori fathers are represented. If you missed it when it first came out, you’ll love it.

Three years ago, Kiri Allan was one of the most recognisable politicians in New Zealand. She was a cabinet minister, a cancer survivor and, to many people, a future leader of the Labour Party.
Then, literally overnight, everything fell apart. But the headlines from that time only ever told a small part of the story.
In this conversation, Kiri talks openly about the childhood that shaped her, being a lesbian in a deeply religious environment, surviving stage-three cervical cancer, the immense pressure of life in Parliament, and the mental health crisis that eventually brought her career to an end.
She also talks very honestly about suicidal thoughts, the shame she carried after the crash, and the slow, difficult process of learning to forgive herself and rebuild her life.
There are some incredibly heavy moments in this conversation - but there is also humour, perspective and a lot of hope.
This is Kiri Allan, telling her story in her own words.

Wed, 05 Aug 2026 - 2h 14min - 523 - Laurie Daley's Thoughts On Origin Coming To Auckland, Media Criticism And Old NRL Yarns
Laurie Daley is Australian rugby league royalty: former Australian captain, winner of 3 Premierships with the Canberra Raiders, NSW captain at just 22. And the man who has twice coached the Blues to State of Origin glory.
But this conversation goes well beyond the sport that made him famous.
Laurie opens up about growing up as the only boy among seven sisters, the sacrifices his parents made, his Aboriginal heritage and making his first-grade debut for Canberra at just 17.
He shares the lessons Wayne Bennett and Mal Meninga taught him, the brutal pressure of coaching State of Origin and the impact of media criticism on his family, his thoughts on game 2 being played at Eden Park in 2027 and much more.
This is the first time we met, and I could tell within minutes I was in the presence of a champion. Laurie is humble, tough and relentlessly positive. This is a glimpse into the man behind the rugby league legend.

Sun, 02 Aug 2026 - 1h 52min - 521 - Karin Burger Couldn't Watch The Comm Games - Now She's Leading NZ Into Them
Karin Burger is a New Zealand netball legend- since making her Silver Ferns debut in 2018 she has played over 70 tests in the black dress.
This episode originally came out in 2023. I’m re-issuing it now because a lot has changed since then. The podcast has grown significantly, picking up thousands of new subscribers. And at the time of publishing, Karin is in Scotland with the Silver Ferns as the team captain for the Commonwealth Games.
Making this moment extra special for Karin is the heartbreak of 4 years ago where she was forced to miss the Comm Games due to injury- we talk about that in the podcast.
We also talk Karins move to NZ from South Africa by herself at 18 and the seven-year grind to become a Silver Fern.
The devastation of being sent off during her Silver Ferns debut.
What it’s like playing for coach Dame Noeline Taurua and insights into her coaching methods.
Karin also opens up about loneliness, being relentlessly hard on herself, her discomfort with vulnerability and much more.
Listening back now, knowing Karin is about to captain New Zealand at the Commonwealth Games, makes her story of sacrifice and perseverance even more powerful. You’ll love this episode.

This is his first ever long form podcast about the person rather than policy.
+ We talk about his early life growing up in the Far North and his love of language.
+ Becoming a father at a young age.
+ His bowel cancer journey and how a foot massage in China may have saved his life.
+ His honest assessment of Helen Clarkes leadership and what Winston Peters is like when the cameras are off.
+ And some of the most controversial headlines of his career: including his headline grabbing remarks about immigration, mining, Nicola Willis, his public feud with Matt Watson. And also the truth behind his recent Canada travel controversy.
+ Shane also discusses his thoughts on ageing, apologising, flaws and the legacy he hopes to leave for his children and grandchildren. This is Shane Jones as you rarely hear him: the person behind the public persona.

Wed, 22 Jul 2026 - 1h 15min - 519 - Brent Eccles: Rock Stardom, Ruthless Deals & the Truth About the Concert Business
Brent Eccles has spent more than 50 years in the music business, both on and off stage.
He played drums in the iconic Australian rock band, The Angels. Then at 45 years old he came home to New Zealand and became one of our most successful and respected concert promoters.
Brent has played drums onstage with Guns N’ Roses, lost hundreds of thousands of dollars on concerts, sold 50,000 tickets to SIX60 in minutes and, during Covid, was officially ranked the number one concert promoter in the world. We talk about all this stuff in the podcast- the good the bad and the ugly.
He also has a reputation for being quite intimidating. We address that as well!

Craig Piggott is the founder and CEO of Halter, one of New Zealand’s fastest-growing companies- they make GPS collars for cows that can do away with the need for physical fences. This wild idea he had 10 years ago is now a company valued at over 3 billion dollars. He was also named 2026 New Zealand Innovator of the Year.
This conversation sees Craig Piggot open up about his life and career in a way he has never done before.
He talks about being a very average student, scraping into engineering at university, and eventually landing a job at Rocket Lab after cornering Sir Peter Beck at a university event. That experience would completely change what he believed was possible.
After just nine months at Rocket Lab, Craig left to start Halter. We talk about why Peter Beck backed him, why the first few years were so brutal, and why there were moments when he would have happily gone back to his old job.
There is also some incredibly personal insights about leadership, pressure, marriage, becoming a dad, work-life balance, culture, and staying grounded when the company you started becomes one of New Zealand’s biggest startup success stories.

Grant Baker is one of those podcast guests where you may or may not know the name. But you most definitely know the brands he has had a
hand in building.
He’s built companies, sold companies, backed big ideas, helped turn 42 Below from a boutique business into a behemoth, had a hand in turning Turners into one of New Zealand’s most recognisable brands, and along the way has collected a fairly ridiculous number of Ferraris
But this conversation, Grants first ever podcast, is about much more than money and cars.
Grant talks about growing up being told he was never going to amount to much, dropping out of teachers’ college, learning sales, making and losing money, working for and with Eric Watson, surviving bowel cancer, helping Liam Lawson get to Formula One and why he is obsessed with Ferraris.
He’s blunt, funny, incredibly driven, and this episode is a masterclass in business, risk, resilience and backing yourself.

My guest today is Hayden Paddon- one of New Zealand’s greatest ever motorsport athletes.
Hayden is a World Rally Championship winner, a seven-time New Zealand rally champion, a two-time European rally champion, and the first person from the Southern Hemisphere to ever win a WRC event.
But this conversation is much more than just about driving cars at ridiculous speeds on gravel road.
Hayden joined me fresh off a World Rally Championship podium finish in Croatia - something even he didn’t expect after eight years away from the top level of the sport.
Hayden is incredibly open in this conversation.
He talks about being bullied, struggling with his weight as a kid, his parents’ separation, depression as a teenager, anxiety, his complicated relationship with confidence, and the fact that he is driven more by fear of failure than by success.
We also talk in depth about the 2017 Monte Carlo crash where a spectator lost his life.
Hayden explains what happened, how it affected him, and what it was like returning to Monte Carlo this year for the first time since that accident - including panic attacks, sleepless nights, and having to face the one place he had tried to avoid for eight years.
This is a motorsports conversation. But it is also a conversation about life. About loyalty. About grief. About resilience. About the cost of chasing one dream for your entire life.
This is the first time we met, and I found Hayden to be entirely honest, thoughtful, vulnerable and very, very Kiwi.

Wed, 08 Jul 2026 - 2h 01min - 515 - The Truth About Ozempic, Banned Peptides & What Actually Works: Dr Ula Heywood
Right now, peptides are everywhere: They’re being talked about on podcasts, on TikTok and Instagram, in gyms, and maybe a few WhatsApp groups you’re in as well.
So, I asked Dr Ula Heywood to come in and explain it all in normal-person language.
+ What actually is a peptide?
+ Why has this become such a huge trend?
+ What is available legally in New Zealand?
+ What are people buying online that they maybe shouldn’t be?
+ We also talk about weight loss medications, the rise of wearables, creatine, collagen, morning routines, and why sometimes the best health advice is still the most boring advice.
If, like me, you had a lot of questions about Peptides but didn’t know where to start- this episode will hopefully be really helpful.

Sun, 05 Jul 2026 - 1h 12min - 514 - The All Blacks Coach Who Hit the Wall: Depression, Burnout, and Winning The World Cup
Sir Graham Henry is one of the most successful and respected coaches in New Zealand sporting history.
He coached the All Blacks from 2004 to 2011, finishing with 88 wins from 103 test matches.
This podcast first came out in 2023- I’m re-releasing it because at the age of 80, 15 years after he retired as coach, Sir Graham Henry is back with the All Blacks as the team selector.
Some of the ground we cover in this conversation includes:
+ His 56-year marriage to Raewyn and why she first thought he was “a bit of a prick”
+ The great Auckland rugby dynasty of the 1990s where he coached Jonah Lomu, Michael Jones, Sean Fitzpatrick, Carlos Spencer and others
+ Being told by NZ rugby he would be banned for life from coaching in New Zealand again if he went to Wales. Then going anyway.
The loneliness and pressure of coaching the Lions.
+ Why suffering burnout and depression changed his whole coaching philosophy
+ Reflections on the 2007 and 2011 Rugby World Cups and much more.
I loved this episode when it first came out, and I still love it now. Ted is a true icon of NZ Rugby.

Wed, 01 Jul 2026 - 1h 26min - 513 - Suzie Bates: Retirement, 20 Years Of Cricket - And The Incredible Stories She Gained Along The Way
Suzie Bates is one of the greatest athletes New Zealand has ever produced: A White Ferns legend, Olympian, Commonwealth Games medallist, double international and all-round bloody impressive human.
This podcast originally came out in 2023. I am rereleasing it because Suzie is about to retire from the game she has given everything to.
This truly is the end of an era: 20 years as a White Fern which is over half her life. She captained the White Ferns for almost seven years. The first woman to play 350 internationals, and the first woman to score 25,000 career runs across international and domestic cricket.
This chat covers everything:
Growing up in Dunedin, playing cricket with boys, making her Otago debut at 15, becoming a New Zealand basketball and cricket rep as a teenager, the rise of women’s cricket, form slumps, mental health, retirement and what comes next.
And then there are the stories: partying with Kobe Bryant, LeBron James and Dwyane Wade at the Beijing Olympics (with David Beckham casually being there). Hanging out backstage with the Rolling Stones while Mick Jagger was watching cricket with one shoe on and much more!
Suzie Bates has earned GOAT status for her cricket, and she deserves it.
She is humble, funny and honest. A truly great Kiwi.

Sun, 28 Jun 2026 - 1h 33min - 512 - Morgana O'Reilly: White Lotus, an Emmy, and the Hardest Year of Her Life
Morgana O’Reilly. is the first ever Emmy Award Winning actress we have had on the podcast!
You may know her from the HBO show The White Lotus.
Or from the iconic Aussie soap, Neighbours.
Or maybe Mean Mums. Or the cop show Bust Up on Neon. Or her incredible film “Stories about my body”
But this conversation reminded me very quickly that a person is never just their IMDb page.
Morgana is so funny, so sharp, so sarcastic, so wildly honest, and one of those people who can tell a story about a rock bottom moment in her life and still somehow manage to make it funny, thoughtful and vulnerable all at once.
There is a lot in this one:
+ We talk White Lotus, of course.
+Her broke years in New York when she made money by being a model at foot worship parties.
+The reality of winning an Emmy Award during a pandemic.
+And her new film Stories About My Body, which started as a solo show and has now become this incredibly personal movie about making peace with the bits of yourself you’ve spent years fighting.
Morgana is AWESOME. For someone who is world class at pretending to be other people, she is also incredibly comfortable in her own skin. Even if you don’t know her or her work, you’ll be a fan after this. She has so many amazing stories, and she tells them brilliantly.

Wed, 24 Jun 2026 - 1h 56min - 511 - Mark Sainsbury First Podcast! Close Up, Edmund Hillary & An Incredible Career In Broadcasting
Mark Sainsbury has been part of the NZ media landscape for as long as you can remember. For 5 years he was the host of a nightly 7pm show on TV1 called Close up. This was at a time when prime time free to air TV still commanded a huge audience.
And this is “Sainso’s” first ever long form podcast! It’s a very wide-ranging conversation:
+ We talk about his iconic moustache, of course.
+ His best stories about working with Sir Paul Holmes.
+ Memories of the 1981 Springbok tour
+ Getting publicly dumped from prime-time TV.
+ Why Paul Henry publicly criticized him.
+ His friendship with Sir Edmund Hillary.
+ Men’s health. Ageing. And the weirdness of having one of the country’s most familiar faces.
Mark is funny, self-deprecating, brutally honest, and full of stories that could only come from someone who has lived such a full life.

Sun, 21 Jun 2026 - 2h 11min - 510 - Moodi Founder Kate Gatfield-Jeffries: What It Really Takes To Start A Successful Business In NZ
Kate Gatfield-Jeffries is the founder of Moodi, one of the fastest-growing wellness brands in New Zealand.
Kate started the business straight out of uni, putting every cent she had into the company.
Four years later, Moodi is in supermarkets, selling millions of cans, expanding into Australia and heading for the US. And at the time of recording this episode Moodi is giving away a sexy gold Range Rovers worth $130,000.
All of this success has been due to one thing: Hard work.
Kate is impressive. She is disciplined, driven, thoughtful and incredibly honest about the unsexy parts of being an entrepreneur. Some of the ground we cover includes:
+ Her childhood and the books that inspired her.
+ The 40-year life plan written at 17.
+ The brutal first year of Moodi, and the cringy other name that was on her short list.
+ And why she still carries her teenage goal-setting journal with her when she travels.
This is a great episode for anyone who has ever wanted to start something, build something, or just understand what it takes to go all in on a dream.

Wed, 17 Jun 2026 - 1h 40min - 509 - Barry Soper on Jacinda Ardern, Duncan Garner & 50 Years Inside NZ Politics
Barry Soper has been around New Zealand politics for so long that Rob Muldoon was Prime Minister back in the 1970s when Barry first started his life as a political reporter.
Since then he has covered all 12 Prime Ministers of New Zealand. He’s seen the boozing, the backstabbing, the egos, the feuds, the big personalities, the little moments, and all the stuff that never makes it into the official version of history.
And now, after 50 years in the press gallery, he’s put a lot of those stories into a new book called One Last Question, Prime Minister.
Barry is 74 now and still incredibly sharp, funny and totally unapologetic for his opinions.
Outside of the political stuff, some of the stuff we talk about includes:
+ His marriage with Heather Duplessis Allen, being a dad later in life and what he wants his younger kids to know about him when they grow up.
+ His feud with Duncan Garner.
+ Meeting Nelson Mandela, Yoko Ono and others.
+ His recent brush with death, grief, aging,
This was a really fun conversation. Barry is one of those great old-school New Zealand characters. A proper raconteur. And whether you agree with him or not, I think you will find this conversation incredibly entertaining.

Sun, 14 Jun 2026 - 2h 00min - 508 - Katie Flood: The Kiwi Serving The World's Biggest Celebs, Reality TV Stardom & What Bravo Never Showed You
You might know Katie Flood from the Bravo reality shows Below Deck Mediterranean, or Winter House, or maybe you don’t know her at all: and that’s totally fine, because that’s what these conversations are all about- getting to know people or getting to learn more about people you may have a pre-formed opinion on.
Katie Flood is from Whangārei, she went to boarding school in Auckland, then somehow ended up working on some of the most expensive superyachts in the world, serving the sort of people whose names most of us only see on the Forbes Rich list or on TMZ.
And some of the stories are wild.
We talk about what life is really like working for billionaires, the difference between real yachting and the Below Deck, the biggest tip she ever got (which was from Simon Cowell) and what Leonardo DiCaprio is actually like when he casually wanders onto a boat in the south of France!
We also talk about some darker, heavier stuff: anxiety, grief, burnout, being suddenly thrown into the Bravo universe, online hate, and what it’s like living in Dubai while missiles are being intercepted overhead.
This was the first time we met and my impression was Katie is funny, honest, self-aware, very Kiwi and very very sweary!
I loved this conversation because it went to places I absolutely did not expect in her trademark authentic unapologetic unfiltered style.
I hope you like it :)

Wed, 10 Jun 2026 - 1h 53min - 507 - Viva La Dirt League: The NZ YouTubers With 7 Mil Subscribers You've Probably Never Heard Of
This is a first for the Dom Harvey Podcast- a 4-way! I’m joined by Rowan, Alan and Adam from Viva La Dirt League- one of the biggest New Zealand success stories most Kiwis have never heard of.
Full disclosure: a week before this conversation, I didn’t know much about them either. Then I saw the buzz in the office, did a deep dive, and realised these three unassuming Kiwi lads have built something absolutely massive.
We’re talking 7.4 million YouTube subscribers, 5.6 billion views, a global fanbase, a custom-built studio with a giant green screen, a medieval tavern, a fake tech store, and a full-noise business that began with a few mates making nerdy videos for fun.
Rowan, Alan and Adam are the brains behind VLDL.
What started in 2011 with parody songs and rough-as-guts sketches has become an international comedy machine for /gamers and fantasy fans.
We talk about the early days when every video seemed to lose them subscribers.
The moment they quit safe jobs to go all-in.
Raising more than $4 million on Kickstarter.
The pressure of employing people.
And the strange reality of being famous to millions online while still walking around New Zealand mostly unnoticed.
This is a funny, honest chat about creativity, business, resilience, friendship and building something huge from the bottom of the world.
If you love VLDL you’ll naturally love this.
You’ll also get a lot from it if you are interested in becoming a content creator.
But its just great story for anyone who is interested in New Zealanders doing epic shit.
I loved this one. Hope you do too.

Sun, 07 Jun 2026 - 1h 44min - 506 - Working With You Ex: Jay-Jay Feeney on Our Unusual New Chapter!

The show stars Morgana O’Reilly and Roimata Fox who play the roles of exes who end up working together, which felt very familiar! LOL
Check out the trailer for Bust Up Here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pGz8Tcj35IY
So, for this episode, I’m joined by my ex-wife, former radio co-host, and current business partner Jay-Jay Feeney.
We talk about:
+ What it’s really like to work with your ex.
+ How we went from married couple to business partners.
+ Why we still consider each other family.
+ And whether a marriage that ends can still be thought of as a success.
It’s honest, funny, occasionally uncomfortable.
Hope you like it.

Wed, 03 Jun 2026 - 41min - 505 - Tony Kemp: The Full Story - Childhood Trauma, 25 Kiwis Tests & The Truth About The Warriors Years
Tony Kemp (“Kempy”) had a massive career in rugby league playing for the Kwis and the Newcastle Knights in the NRL.
He was assistant coach of the Warriors when they made the NRL grand final in 2002. And by the age of 34 he was the head coach of the Warriors, with Ivan Clary as his assistant, before a very public sacking.
He’s also done a tonne of media work where he has a reputation for his strong opinions.
We discuss all those parts of Kempy in this podcast.
But this conversation is more about the man underneath all of that.
Tony talks about his childhood: the family tragedy that saw three of his siblings drown, being raised by his grandmother and initially believing she was his mum. Then growing up around chaos and domestic violence and the PTSD and depression that this unresolved trauma caused much later in life.
There are some heavy moments in this one. But there’s also humour, warmth and a lot of wisdom.
I came away from this conversation seeing Tony completely differently. I think you will too.

Sun, 31 May 2026 - 2h 29min - 504 - ‘Richie McCaw Nearly Killed Me’: Molly Spark - 22-Year-Old Adventure Racing Phenom
Molly Spark is a 22 year old from Canterbury, and she spends her spare time doing things that sound like a PTSD inducing nightmare for most of us:
Her sport is multi-day expedition races through mountains, rivers, forests and bush.
You may have heard of the iconic event called Godzone- it got a bit of mainstream coverage after Richie McCaw took part a few years ago- that’s an expedition race.
1000km in a week. Sleep deprivation. Hallucinations. Limited food. Carrying everything you need in a backpack. Navigating with a map and compass. And the wild part? She LIVES for this stuff. She is built different.
This podcast is a small part of the Molly Spark story.
We talk about resilience, fear, suffering, hallucinations, sleep deprivation, near-death moments, and why she genuinely believes discomfort is one of the best things a person can experience. There is also a great story about how Richie McCaw almost killed her.
This is one of my favourite podcasts so far- partly because the sport of expedition racing itself is so wild, but mostly because Molly is such a firecracker. She just oozes positivity and joy.
This chat definitely didn’t make me want to become an expedition racer….but it did make me wish Molly was my friend.

Wed, 27 May 2026 - 1h 48min - 503 - ‘I Was An Honest Dealer': Prison to Professor - The Unbelievable Life of Greg Newbold
Greg Newbold is best known as one of New Zealand’s top criminologists. He spent 30 years at Canterbury University and became to go-to guy whenever the main stream media wanted someone to comment on crime.
But his back story is jaw dropping.
In the 1970s, when Greg was in his early 20s, he was a heroin user and dealer, socialising in the same circles as New Zealand’s most infamous drug dealer, Terry Clarke aka Mr Asia.
He eventually got busted and was sentenced to seven-and-a-half-years in prison.
Then somehow… he comes out the other side, gets a PhD and completely reinvented himself as one of New Zealand’s leading criminologists and university professors. And he has just put out a new book too called Dream Dealer.
https://www.paperplus.co.nz/shop/books/non-fiction/biography-memoir/dream-dealer
In this conversation, Greg opens up about how he became addicted to heroin, the reality of life at Paremoremo maximum security prison back then, and the surprising lessons he learned about human nature while locked up alongside some of the country’s most notorious criminals.
At nearly 75 years old, Greg’s still running, swimming, lifting weights, and reflecting on a life that’s been chaotic, controversial, and ultimately incredibly fulfilling.

Sun, 24 May 2026 - 2h 13min - 502 - The Firefighter Who Raised $20 Million for Cancer- Tony Scott
Today’s guest is one of those people who quietly makes New Zealand a better place.
Tony Scott (aka Scottie) has spent more than 30 years in the fire service. And for the past 8 years he has been Crew Chief at Auckland Airport.
Chances are, even if you don’t know his name, you’ve seen the impact of his work.
Scottie is the man behind the Firefighter Sky Tower Challenge: the iconic annual event where firefighters climb 1,103 steps in full gear to raise money for Blood Cancer New Zealand.
What started as a small idea with a handful of firefighters has now raised almost 20 million dollars for Kiwis battling cancers. And this episode is being released to coincide with the 21st anniversary of this iconic Kiwi fundraiser
As well as the Sky Tower challenge, we find out who Scotty is- his early years, the stutter he had to overcome to get the job of his dreams, the emotional toll of recovering bodies and saving lives, his reaction when he was awarded a Queens Service Medal and much more.
After spending a couple of hours with Scottie, you discover pretty quickly that this isn’t about publicity or recognition for him.
He’s just one of those genuinely good humans who gets a lot of fulfilment out of helping other people.
There’s a lot of heart in this episode.

Wed, 20 May 2026 - 1h 40min - 501 - Dr Lucy Hone Lost Her 12-Year-Old Daughter. This Is What She Learned
We are so lucky to have Dr Lucy Hone in New Zealand.
She is one of the world’s leading voices on resilience and grief. Her TED Talk, Three Secrets of Resilient People, has been viewed more than 9 million times and is one of the most watched TED Talks in the world.
She’s also a mother who endured the unimaginable loss of her 12-year-old daughter Abi in a car accident in 2014.
In this episode we talk about Abi- who she was, what she loved, the life she might have lived… but we also go much deeper than that.
We talk about how people survive the things they think will destroy them.
Why grief isn’t something you just “get over.”
And why the famous five stages of grief might actually be doing more harm than good.
Lucy also opens up about forgiveness, parenting through trauma, post-traumatic growth and the reality of rebuilding a life after everything changes.
This is a conversation about loss. But it’s also a conversation about living.
And I’d like to think it is a tribute to the life of Abigail Anne Hone. A life that was cut tragically and painfully short.

A quick warning before we get into this episode: this conversation includes discussion around gang life, drug use, childhood sexual abuse, mental health, suicide, and trauma. Please listen with care.
Lee Tepuia is a father of seven, a former Rebels Motorcycle Club member, a 501 deportee, and now a qualified youth worker helping vulnerable young people through the gym he founded in Blenheim called Box on Boxing.
And in 2026 he was awarded a Local Hero medal at the Kiwi Bank New Zealander of the year awards.
But that description barely scratches the surface.
Lee grew up carrying trauma most people could never imagine. He found brotherhood in gang life, spent years building a life in Australia, then had it ripped away when he was detained and deported back to New Zealand under Australia’s 501 laws, despite never being convicted of a crime there.
At his lowest point, Lee says he didn’t want to be here anymore.
But somehow, through boxing, therapy, community, and a decision to finally confront the pain he’d spent decades trying to outrun, he rebuilt his life from the ground up.
What struck me most about this conversation is that Lee doesn’t try to present himself as a saint. He owns his mistakes. He talks openly about addiction, violence, mental health, shame, and the consequences of his choices. But he also talks about redemption, purpose, and what it actually takes to change.
This is not a podcast about glorifying gangs.
It’s a conversation about trauma, survival, accountability, forgiveness, and hope.

Wed, 13 May 2026 - 2h 21min - 499 - All Blacks Legend Frank Bunce: Jonah, Laurie Mains & The Truth About '95
Frank Bunce is regarded as one of the great All Black Centres of all time.
He first got selected when he was 30 and went on to play 55 tests, including a rugby world cup final.
At the time of recording this episode Frank was on TV in New Zealand on the reality show “Celebrity Treasure Island” so we discuss why, at the age of 64, he agreed to do it. Thanks to the team at TVNZ for helping set this conversation up.
I don’t think Buncey has ever spoken this openly or at this length ever before which makes this episode pretty special.
We talk about Franks journey from growing up in South Auckland with 7 siblings and working on the back of a rubbish truck to the world stage, representing both Samoa and the All Blacks and being part of the transformational shift from amateur rugby to the professional era.
There are some incredible rugby stories here- including his very special relationship with Jonah Lomu and Eric Rush and his love-hate relationship with coach Laurie Mains. But this episode goes far beyond sport.
Frank opens up about aging, identity, fatherhood, friendship, grief, retirement, and the emotional challenges that come when elite sport suddenly disappears.
This is a reflective and also very funny conversation with one of New Zealand sport’s great characters.

We’ve all got that one mate who’s convinced they’ve worked out how to beat the market, usually with a lot of confidence and no actual expertise.
So, here's your reminder not to get caught up in the noise and trust the real investment experts at Generate.
I sat down with a Generate KiwiSaver adviser when they came on as sponsor in 2023, and it was one of those conversations that made me think, why didn’t I do this earlier?

Sun, 10 May 2026 - 2h 17min - 498 - Fizzy Sends: Inside The INSANE World of Death Diving
Flynn Chisholm, or as he is known by his 121,000 Instagram followers, "Fizzy Sends" is the New Zealand record holder in a breath-taking activity known as “death diving.”
He is also a speed climber. And at this time of releasing this episode he is about to attempt a record for the most pull ups.
Flynn is one of New Zealand’s most exciting extreme athletes.
In this podcast, Flynn shares the mindset, discipline, and faith behind a sport that most people (me included) don’t understand and can’t even comprehend.
Some of the stuff we discuss includes:
+ What death divingactually is. And why it’s growing worldwide
+ The mental process before stepping off a 40m cliff
+ How he assesses risk before taking each jump.
+ Why he doesn’t read comments and how he handles criticism
+ The injuries he’s faced (including temporary blindness and concussions) And much more.
This is one of those episodes where you will hopefully get a greater understanding about something you may not known much about.

Wed, 06 May 2026 - 1h 06min - 497 - Phil Smith: The Man Behind NZ’s Most Iconic TV Shows
Phil Smith is one of the most influential figures in New Zealand television.
You may not know the name, but you most definitely know some of his shows: The Casketeers, The Lion Man, One Lane Bridge, and the Jeremy Wells show Eating Media Lunch. Content that’s not just popular, but culturally iconic.
I’ve known Phil socially for a number of years now, and I just thought he was a cool guy who’d had a solid behind-the-scenes career in TV. What I didn’t realise is just how wild his story actually is:
Like working in Africa as a journalist and being caught in gunfire.
Getting arrested and locked up in Africa for a week, then pretty much dumped at the border with nowhere to go.
Living with THE Jane Goodall for a month and getting life advice from her over glasses of scotch.
We also get into how he went from all of that to working with Sir Paul Holmes at his peak, building and selling a company in his early 30s and creating some of New Zealand’s most successful TV shows.
This episode goes everywhere. It’s part war story, part business lesson, part creative deep dive… and somehow still just feels like a chat with a really intriguing Kiwi.

Sun, 03 May 2026 - 1h 46min - 496 - Bariz Shah: Prison, Christchurch Terror Attacks, and Why NZs Justice System is Broken
Bariz Shah is a husband and father, an engineer and a community leader. He was named 2021 Muslim New Zealander of the Year and he is also the author of a great book called Beyond Hope.
But before all of this, he was a convicted criminal who was sentenced to 3 years and 2 months in jail.
This podcast is a small part of his story. The story of a kid who came to New Zealand as a refugee, went completely off the rails as a teenager - eventually ending up in prison at 18 - and has managed to do a full 180 and completely turn his life around.
Bariz opens up about growing up between Afghanistan, Pakistan and New Zealand, dealing with abuse and identity struggles, and how that led him down an incredibly negative path.
We talk about his self-destructive spiral which ended up with time in prison. And the moment he decided he was never going back.
We also get into how he rebuilt his life from scratch… studying engineering, finding his faith, and eventually launching a project to honour the victims of the Christchurch Mosque attacks.
There’s a lot in this one: redemption, forgiveness, discipline, faith… and some pretty confronting stories along the way.

Wed, 29 Apr 2026 - 1h 44min - 495 - Samoana Matagi: He Survived 14,400 Volts, Lost Both Hands, Now He Helps Thousands
At 34 years old, Samoana Matagi from Utah (“Sam”) lost both of his hands in a freak electrical accident with 14,000 volts.
Now you can find him online with the nick-name he gave himself: The No Handed Bandit.
Sam had to relearn literally everything in a world that is designed for people with hands: eating, texting, driving, dressing, hygiene. He compares it to being a baby again…but remembering the frustration”
We cover a lot of ground in this episode:
+ What happened on the day of the accident.
+ The mental battle that followed.
+ What it’s like learning to do absolutely everything again from scratch.
+ And how he’s turned that experience into helping thousands of people around the world.
There’s a lot of humour in this one too - that’s the magic of Sam.
He’s got this ability to make you laugh while also dropping some profound truth-bombs about resilience and getting on with it when life throws something massive your way.
If you ever find yourself thinking “why me?” (and let’s be honest- haven’t we all had those self-pity moments?) this episode might be just the kick in the arse you need.

Sun, 26 Apr 2026 - 1h 20min - 494 - “Go Big or Go Home”- Jason Paris on One.NZ Stadium Sponsorship
This episode with Jason Paris first came out at the end of 2024. I thought I’d release it in case you are new or new-ish to the podcast and missed it the first time round.
Also, because New Zealand’s latest landmark- the seriously impressive One NZ stadium has just opened in Christchurch. And Jason was deeply involved in signing off on this 10-year multimillion dollar sponsorship
This is a rare peak into the man behind the title.
From growing up in Invercargill with a solo mum on the benefit with no relationship with his father, to leading major brands like Spark, TVNZ and now One NZ, we talk about:
+ How Jason rose to CEO without a university degree
+ Why he gives out his personal email to customers
+ Lessons from mistakes –from million-dollar errors to public criticism
+ The importance of family, presence, and being a great dad
+ The story behind the One NZ stadium sponsorship in Christchurch, and much much more!
This episode is a reminder that behind every CEO is a regular human being, shaped by their past, driven by their values, and still figuring things out.
Jason’s story is proof that where you start doesn’t determine where you can go.
If you’re hearing this for the first time, I have no doubt you’ll love it.
If you are relistening to it, I hope you’ll pick up on some stuff you missed the first-time round

Wed, 22 Apr 2026 - 1h 43min - 493 - Dame Theresa Gattung: The Telecom CEO Who Became One of NZ's Most Powerful Women
If you grew up in New Zealand in the late 90s or early 2000s, chances are you’ll know that name Dame Theresa Gattung.
Theresa became the CEO of Telecom at just 37 years old. Becoming the first woman to run a large NZ public company.
And during that time, she was part of some massive decisions - including the sale of the Yellow Pages for over $2 billion… which, looking back now, was unbelievably well-timed.
But that’s just one chapter.
Since then, she’s gone on to back and build businesses like My Food Bag, which became one of New Zealand’s biggest startup success stories… and gave her the freedom to live life more on her terms.
But this conversation isn’t just about business.
We unpack it all here:
The mindset that helped Theresa become CEO at 37
The reality of being a woman in leadership - then vs now
Lessons from burnout, failure, and rebuilding after major life transitions
Why she chose not to have children — and has no regrets
Her daily non-negotiables for mental and physical wellbeing
What success looks like to her now in her 60s
There’s some incredible perspective in this one: On leadership, on resilience, and on what actually matters when you zoom out a bit and look at the big picture.

Sun, 19 Apr 2026 - 1h 42min - 492 - David Downs: Comedian, Cancer Survivor & The Man Selling NZ to the World
David Downs is a man with a wild CV: he quit university to become a comedian, helped build the New Zealand comedy scene, co-founded The Classic and even wrote a few books.
Then somehow pivoted into tech, ended up working for Microsoft, running the show across Southeast Asia. And now he is the chairman of The Icehouse and works in government helping shape how the world sees New Zealand.
But there is so much for to his story than the wild career:
A few years ago, David was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer. What started as feeling a bit run down turned into being told he had less than a year to live… and that there was no treatment options left in New Zealand.
And that’s where things take a pretty wild turn.
Through a random LinkedIn message, he ends up getting access to a cutting-edge treatment in Boston. Problem is… it costs about a million US dollars.
So in this episode, we get into all of it.
We also talk about what he’s doing now to help bring that same life-saving treatment to New Zealand, so other Kiwis don’t have to go through what he did.
There’s a lot in this one, laughter and tears. It’s heavy in parts, but also funny, honest, and genuinely inspiring. All told by a man with an incredible ability of telling a great story.
David’s one of those people who’s been through something huge… and instead of just moving on, he’s decided to use it to help others.
It was the first time we met. I thoroughly enjoyed his company and I think you will too.

Dr. Dan Plews is a sports scientist, endurance coach, and one of the fastest age group IronMan athletes on the planet. And these days you’ll find him with his shirt off at one of those Hyrox events.

Athletes and teams that Dr Dan Plews have worked with have collectively won over 30 Olympic and world titles.
In this episode as well as learning more about this low-key legend, some of the stuff we look at includes:
* Lessons from coaching Olympic and world champion athletes
* The biggest mistakes everyday athletes make.
* Longevity in sport - how to stay competitive into your 40s and beyond. Why, at 43, he believes he is still nowhere near done.
And so much more!

Sun, 12 Apr 2026 - 2h 11min - 490 - Helene Barron: From Tarawera Ultra to Tongue Cancer - The Year Everything Changed
Helene Barron is an elite trail runner, a high-performance physiotherapist, a coach, a wife, a mum, a daughter, a sister, a legend and now a survivor- after being diagnosed with tongue cancer.
In early 2023 Helene was on top of the world: she’d just finished top 5 at the Tarawera 100 Miler, one of the toughest tunning races in the country.
Life was good: Career, family, everything was lining up.
And then, just weeks later…everything changed. Helene became one of the 77 New Zealanders every day who get told they have cancer.
In this episode, we get into:
+ The moment she discovered something wasn’t right: a tiny sore that turned out to be aggressive cancer
+ The phone call that no one ever wants to receive
+ Recording goodbye messages for her kids before surgery
+ What it’s really like going through six weeks of radiation
+ And how she found the strength to keep moving forward when everything felt uncertain
We also talk about resilience, perspective, and why she lives by one simple rule now: don’t drop the glass balls (I’d never heard this theory before but I love it- I hope you will too)

Wed, 08 Apr 2026 - 1h 33min - 489 - Chris Quin: Foodstuffs CEO On Covid, Leadership & Life
Chris Quin is the CEO of Foodstuffs North Island, a business with over $10 billion in turnover, 24,000 employees and more than 400 stores across brands like New World, Pak’nSave, and Four Square.
This is part of the Chris Quinn story- a look at the man behind the title.
We talk about losing both of his parents at a young age, the lessons that shaped how he leads today.
We get into career setbacks, including missing out on the CEO role at Telecom and what that taught him about resilience.
There’s some great management lessons and insight into what makes a strong leader, from a guy who has done it at the highest level imaginable for a very long time.
And lots of fascinating insights about running 400 grocery stores through the pandemic when Kiwis were panic buying toilet paper, and the reality of leading a team of people who face abuse or violence on a daily basis.
This is a masterclass on what it takes to lead at the very top. I loved meeting and getting to learn more about CQ and I’m sure you will too.

Sun, 05 Apr 2026 - 2h 22min - 488 - Amanda Luxon On Christopher, What Really Goes On At Home & Being Married To A PM
Amanda Luxon is probably best known as the wife of the Prime Minister of New Zealand.
But she also has her own story, her own perspective, and a really thoughtful way of looking at life, relationships, and what actually matters.
Not to mention some really strong opinions on critical thinking and why it is incredibly important.
Amanda is a self-described introvert and typically does her best to stay out of the spotlight which makes this podcast appearance a rarity.
Due to the nature of politics, you might already have an opinion on Amanda Luxon. This long form conversation will either change your opinion or reinforce what you already think, and either of those outcomes are fine - I just appreciate you being open to give this episode a listen.
Some of the ground we cover in this conversation includes:
+ What it’s really like living alongside one of the most demanding jobs in the country- the reality behind the negative headlines, the polls, the rumours and how you make a relationship work when one person is essentially “on duty” 24/7.
+ Amanda shares some of the philosophies that shaped their children, from teaching them whose opinions actually matter, to why the first thing you say to your child when they screw up is more important than anything that comes after.
+ And there are some really human moments in here as well… from dance parties in the kitchen to Christophers annoying habit of sharing memes and the story behind that viral election night photo of her biceps.
It’s honest, it’s reflective and it gives you a side of public life that we don’t often get to hear.

Wed, 01 Apr 2026 - 2h 03min - 487 - Dr Alia Bojilova: Being Held Hostages, the SAS & the Science of Thriving
Dr. Alia Bojilova former SAS lead psychologist, and the author of The Resilience Toolkit.
She’s worked with elite special forces soldiers, athletes, CEOs, people operating at the absolute edge of human performance.
But her story goes far beyond that.
In this conversation, we talk about everything from growing up in post-communist Bulgaria, where simple things like toilet paper, cheese and chocolate were rationed, to moving to New Zealand at 17 without speaking English, all the way through to working inside one of the most elite military environments in the world.
And then, there’s the moment where everything changes.
Alia shares, in incredible detail, the story of being taken hostage in Syria. A seven-hour ordeal involving armed militants, minefields, and the very real threat of an ugly execution.
But what’s remarkable isn’t just what happened: it’s how she processed it, what she learned from it, and how she’s used that experience to better understand human resilience.
Dr. Bojilova is a unique individual- she is a real breath of fresh air- smart, tough and very funny. I walked away from this one thinking differently. I hope you will too.

Sun, 29 Mar 2026 - 2h 21min - 486 - Navajo Stirling: From Shy Upper Hutt Kid to UFC Champion
Navajo Stirling is a UFC light heavyweight fighter and one of the most exciting fighters coming out of New Zealand right now. He is trained by the mixed martial arts guru Eugene Bereman at City Kickboxing in Auckland.
At the time of recording this intro, Navajo is in Seattle on a UFC lineup with Israel Adesanya…
Which is a really cool full circle moment- from the moment he decided he wanted to be a UFC fighter he followed the exact steps and blueprint created by Izzy.
This podcast is part of the Navajo Stirling story:
+ His upbringing in Upper Hutt…and only discovering the UFC while working at Foodstuffs and going to a co-worker’s house to watch a Connor MacGregor fight on TV.
+ What it actually takes to get to the UFC…the financial reality of it…and why so many people never make it.
+ His first time meeting and training his hero, Israel, after watching and imitating every single fight he had ever had on YouTube.
+ There’s also some great stuff in here about fighting itself: what it feels like to get hit, why he says everything slows down in the cage…and how he deals with pressure when he’s about to walk out. And then there’s the bigger stuff: purpose, potential and his fear of becoming just another “should’ve, could’ve, would’ve.”
I think you will also enjoy this if you like learning about Kiwis who are out there chasing dreams and goals that seem impossible- its inspiring stuff.

Wed, 25 Mar 2026 - 1h 57min - 485 - The Conversations Jenny-May Clarkson Couldn’t Have on TV
Many of you may know Jenny-May Clarkson as the lady from Breakfast TV -but that chapter of her life is just a very small part of the Jenny May story.
After nearly 20 years in media and six years hosting Breakfast, Jenny-May stepped away at the end of 2025 without a clear next move, entering a terrifying new season of her life: uncertainty and reinvention.
This korero is 2 and a half hours long…but just scrapes the surface of the incredible life (so far) of an inspirational Kiwi. We talk about:
+ Why she walked away from a 20-year TV career. And the impact today from losing a sibling when she was 6 years old.
+ Why she loved playing with Dame Noelene Taurua but HATED her as a coach, And why she hates her Commonwealth Games silver medal (spoiler: its because it’s not a gold one)
+ The intensely personal decision to get her tā moko (kōwhai) and why doing full immersion te reo Māori was the hardest thing she’s ever done
+ What success means to her now and so much more.
I would love to say this is Jenny-May like you’ve never heard her before, but the truth is Jenny-May is always just Jenny-May- unapologetically herself- unfiltered, honest, warts n all. I already loved J-May before this…. but this definitely gave me an even deeper appreciation for her.

Sun, 22 Mar 2026 - 2h 35min - 484 - Melie Kerr: NZ's Next Cricket GOAT Is Already Here
Melie Kerr has just recently become the captain of the White Ferns Cricket team, now leading some of the women she idolised growing up.
This episode was originally released in October 2023, but it still remains one of my favourite episodes of all time, so I thought I’d reshare it in case you missed it the first-time round.
Melie made the White Ferns while she was still in her mid-teens.
It was while she was still at school, at age 17 she scored 232 not out against Ireland which was the highest score in women’s ODI cricket at the time.
She’s played all over the world, earned big contracts in India, bought her first home at 22, and is now in her mid-20s and playing some of the best cricket of her life!
But this episode isn’t just about cricket.
Melie talks very openly and articulately about her harrowing mental health journey and the moment her life nearly came undone.
She talks about the support of her family and close friends and the reality of recovery.
This is not an easy listen. But I think it’s an important conversation and one I think will help a lot of people.

Wed, 18 Mar 2026 - 1h 49min - 483 - Robbie Magasiva: Losing Pua, Hitting Rock Bottom & Starting Over
Robbie Magasiva is one of Aotearoa’s most recognisable actors.
He is possibly best known for his role as Will Jackson, a prison guard on Wentworth. But his IMDB page is massive:
He is part of the iconic Naked Samoans comedy group. He’s been in Shortland Street, The Lord of the Rings, Sione’s Wedding, The Strip with Taika Waititi and much more.
In this episode we chat about all sorts of stuff:
+ The good, bad and ugly of acting, including the anxiety that almost forced him off Wentworth.
+ A heartbreaking story about moving to NZ from Samoa at 10 and being ashamed of his Samoan nose.
+ The devastation of watching his mum live with dementia diagnosis.
+ The sudden death of his brother Pua, the grief that followed, and what healing has looked like over time
+ A wild story about the best perk he has got from his mate, Taika Waititi and so much more.
By the time we wrapped this episode the thing that stood out most for me was the cool place Robbie is in now: grounded, self-aware, still ambitious, but far less interested in outside validation.
At 53, he is still pretending to be other people on camera. But off camera he is unapologetically himself.

Sun, 15 Mar 2026 - 1h 41min - 482 - Craig Innes: All Black, NRL Star & Agent - What's Killing NZ Rugby Explained!
Craig Innes has lived several sporting lives.
He debuted for the All Blacks when he was 19, scored two tries on debut at Cardiff Arms Park, and went on to play 17 tests.
He then switched codes and playing rugby league in England with Leeds then eventually to the Manly Sea Eagles in Australia, where he won the 1996 Premiership.
In this era of his sporting life, he is a highly respected player agent, helping guide young players through the pressures of high-performance sport.
This podcast is part of the Craig “Postie” Innes story:
+ What the All-Blacks culture was really like in the late 80s and early 90s, and some great stories about bus etiquette, scalping tickets and being coached by Grizz Wylie.
+ His controversial move from rugby to league for money, and reflections on winning the NRL and being part of the Manly Sea Eagles dynasty.
+ We also about Craig’s longest career as a player agent and his thoughts and concerns on the future of the sport.
Postie is genuinely one of the good guys. I have known him in passing for 20ish years, but he is such a low key and humble guy that I really had no idea of the extent of his achievements as a player, so this was fun.
I really hope you enjoy this episode

Wed, 11 Mar 2026 - 2h 17min - 481 - Grief, Love, and Leadership: Dame Joan Withers Unfiltered
Dame Joan Withers is one of New Zealand’s most influential business leaders. Whether or not you know the name, you definitely know the companies she has been involved with.
She is the former Chair of The Warehouse, former CEO of Fairfax NZ and The Radio Network, and director across some of the country’s biggest organisations, including ANZ, TVNZ, Auckland Airport, Mercury, Sky and more.
She also does not do many podcasts, which makes this conversation feel even more special - especially given how open she was about some incredibly personal subjects.
Dame Joan talks candidly about ageing and cosmetic surgery, marriage, attraction, and what it takes to keep a relationship strong for more than five decades.
And in the most devastating part of the episode, Joan opens up about the devastating sudden loss of her only son, Jamie, 4 months earlier, and what grief teaches you that no boardroom ever can.
There is also lots of great business stuff- what being on a board really looks like, why she is leaving ANZ after 13 years, the behind the scenes of the deal that saw Fairfax purchase Trade-Me for $700 million, the toll of being the leading news story for something negative and much more.
This was the first time we met, and the conversation was not what I expected. I can imagine in her natural habitat of the board room she could be terrifying…but in the studio for this podcast Joan was open, kind, gracious and charming and I loved every minute of our chat.

Sun, 08 Mar 2026 - 1h 39min - 480 - The 16-Year-Old Phenom: Craig Kirkwood on the Unbelievable Rise of Sam Ruthe
Craig Kirkwood was a really good runner- his marathon PB was 2 hours 13 minutes and he made the NZ Commonwealth Games team.
Now he has become a world class coach, working with everyone from weekend warriors who want to do a faster Park Run, through to elite athletes like Hayden Wilde, Sam Tanner and Sam Ruthe- the 16-year-old who has been setting the running world on fire with his record-breaking times in the mile.

+ His predictions for the future of Sam Ruthe
+The hilarious story of how he first met Triathlon legend, Haydn Wilde and his reflections on their coach/athlete split

Wed, 04 Mar 2026 - 1h 33min - 479 - Michael Campbell Reflects on Historic Career & Beating ‘Peak’ Tiger Woods
In this podcast, New Zealand golf legend Michael Campbell opens up like never before.
"Cambo" is one of the greatest golfers NZ has ever produced. His pinnacle was in 2005 when he beat Tiger Woods at the peak of his powers to win the US Open.
This podcast has plenty of incredible golf stories and we drop a lot of big names like Nicklaus, Norman, Daly and Fox. But this is so much more than a golf nostalgia conversation.
We talk about māori identity, mana, grief, family, humility, the cost of success, tall poppy culture, trust, and the strange limbo of achieving your life’s biggest goal , then having to figure out who you are afterwards.
This conversation is funny. It’s emotional. It’s honest. And it even has a story about a solo haka in front of Nelson Mandela!

Sun, 01 Mar 2026 - 2h 01min - 478 - White Island Survivor: Inside NZ's Worst-Ever Volcanic Disaster
Kelsey Waghorn is a Whakaari/White Island survivor and former guide who suffered severe burns and has undergone ongoing surgeries and rehab.
This chat paints a detailed picture of who she was before December 9, 2019, what happened during the eruption and how the years since have looked.
She shares her story on her own terms and in her own words, including recovery milestones, the messy middle, and what it means to keep turning up.
This podcast first came out in May 2023. I decided to rerelease it because Kelsey has just put a book out called “Surviving White Island”, so if you like this conversation, I have no doubt you will love to learn more about this incredible Kiwi in her own words through her book:

Wed, 25 Feb 2026 - 1h 34min - 477 - Brad Thorn on NRL Party Culture, Winning the World Cup & The Art of the Enforcer
Brad Thorn career is a highlights reel: NRL premierships with the Broncos, 59 All Black tests with an 85% win rate including a Rugby World Cup title and a reputation as one of the toughest men to ever play.
But this may be the most vulnerable and personal podcast Brad has ever given.
“Thorny” opens up about:
+ Why he turned down an All-Blacks selection in 2001, his thoughts on the All Blacks coaching role and the sacking of Razor Robertson, why he swore at Sir Wayne Smith a few days before the 2011 RWC final and plenty more sports stuff.
Then there is the off-field areas:
+ His mums Alzheimer’s disease and the heartbreak of her no longer recognizing him.
+ His “womanizer” party years in the NRL.
+ Finding faith at the height of success at the Broncos, and the backlash that followed.
+ Fatherhood, masculinity, anxiety, what excellence looks like now and much more!.
For a man considered to be one of the hardest All Blacks of this century this conversation is Reflective. Honest. And surprisingly tender. This was the first time we met, but by the time we finished I felt like we had known each other for years.

Sun, 22 Feb 2026 - 2h 31min - 476 - Hannah McQueen: The "Grim" Reality of Ageing in New Zealand
On this episode, I talk to Hannah McQueen, a powerhouse Kiwi entrepreneur.
S
he built then sold a company called EnableMe and with it helped thousands of families get control of their finances
Now she’s starting all over again- this time in elderly heathcare with a company called “Brightly.” She is on a mission to completely rethink how we care for ageing New Zealanders.
This is the most unguarded I have ever heard Hannah McQueen and I hope you enjoy getting to know the real Hannah as much as I did.
Along the way:
+ The EnableMe origin story—business plan, boss, exit, and the earn-out grind
+ Why Kiwis avoid money talk
+ The moment a rest home contract lit a fire (and how that became Brightly)
+ The “lighthouse identity” idea: building what people don’t yet know they need. And much much more!

Wed, 18 Feb 2026 - 1h 46min - 475 - Inside Fonterra: Miles Hurrell - The Accidental CEO
Since 2018, Miles Hurrell has been the CEO of the Fonterra, New Zealand’s largest company with revenue exceeding $22 billion. This is his first ever long-form interview podcast and you will get to see a side of Miles that has never been shown publically before.
There is plenty in her for the rural community and anyone keen to learn more about Fonterra. Including the late-night emails he often gets from pissed off farmers, and the viral “butter-gate” moment on TV1 news last year and what happens when he gets called to Parliament for meetings with MPs.
But this chat is far more personal than anything Miles has done before:
We discuss his messy upbringing with a resilient solo mum, raising 3 boys on a benefit and moving schools constantly. And the very special relationship he has with his mum now, why he insisted on looking for the good in everyone, how he balances a hectic job with a 12-year-old son and much more.

Sun, 15 Feb 2026 - 1h 39min - 474 - Disturbing Reality Of Investigating Thousands Of Crime Scenes - Tom Coyle
Today’s episode is not an easy listen, but it is an important one.
Thomas Coyle was a forensic scientist who spent more than 30 years working crime scenes, identifying the dead, and helping families find answers after unimaginable loss.
For his service he was acknowledged in the Kings birthday honours list in 2024. And he has just put a book out called “The Dead Speak.”
Thomas has worked over 20,000 crime scenes. He was part of the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami response, the Christchurch earthquakes, and countless murders, suicides, and unexplained deaths across the UK and New Zealand.
This conversation is, at times, gory and shocking. But it is not about gore or shock value.
We talk about what it takes to do this job, what he really thinks of shows like CSI, what death smells like and how he’s learned to live with images that never truly leave.
This is confronting. It’s uncomfortably honest and its unforgettable.
Listener discretion advised.

We talk about her life on the road chasing winters, the brutal reality of crashing at 140km/h - what that feels like and how she manages fear and risk, her rock-bottom moment at the Beijing Olympics,.
And why her mindset heading into the 2026 Winter Olympics in Cortina, Italy is very different to anything she’s done before and much much more.

Sun, 08 Feb 2026 - 1h 51min - 472 - Why Does ‘Everyone’ Have ADHD Now? Dr Kieran Kennedy
Dr. Kieran Kennedy, also known as “the Hot Doc”, is a New Zealand–trained psychiatrist now based in Sydney.
When it comes to his work in adult ADHD assessment and treatment, he is widely regarded as the go to guy in Australian media.
Outside of his medical work, he also dabbles in modelling and bodybuilding. He’s even been on the cover of Men’s Health magazine. Not bad for a farm boy from Waiuku!
In this episode, we cut through the noise and misinformation surrounding ADHD and Dr Kenndy answers YOUR questions:
+ what ADHD actually is
+ why diagnosis has “exploded” in recent years
+ how it presents differently in men and women
+ why assessment can be expensive and slow
+ how ADHD can affect self-esteem, relationships, work, and identity. And much more.
This is a practical, no BS, myth-busting conversation which I hope will be beneficial for anyone who is ADHD curious.

Wed, 04 Feb 2026 - 1h 17min - 471 - Sir Rod Drury (Xero Founder) on NZ’s Biggest Challenges
Sir Rod Drury is one of New Zealand’s most influential business leaders, and genuinely one of the most fun and inspiring kiwis I’ve ever met through the podcast.
Whether you know the name or not, you most definitely know the company he founded when he was 40: Xero, a company that grew from a Wellington apartment into a global platform with over 4.5 million customers, thousands of employees and billions in revenue.
We talk about the Xero back story- how a skater boy from Hawkes Bay with a stutter built a global brand. But this conversation goes far beyond accounting software.
Recorded at his jaw-dropping property in Queenstown, Rod opens about identity after stepping away from Xero, the personal cost of building a global business, how he conquered a debilitating stutter, why he’s now focused on large-scale public good projects that could shape New Zealand for generations and so much more.
Rod is such a forward thinker, I got the impression he is bored by reflecting on what he has done and is much more energized by what he plans to do. So I appreciate him indulging me for this podcast by treading over some old ground.
This is a wide-ranging conversation about success, meaning, community, and what really matters when the grind slows down.
I left this podcast feeling so inspired and proud. It reminded me that there are some really cool, super talented Kiwis who love New Zealand and are doing what they can to make it the best little country on the planet.

Sun, 01 Feb 2026 - 1h 53min - 470 - Unf**k your life for 2026! - David Niethe
David Niethe, one of New Zealand’s top mental performance coaches, is back on the podcast. He first came on as a guest in October 2024 when his book “The Winning Mindset” came out. In that episode a big part of the focus was on who Dave is and his backstory.
For this episode the focus is less on Dave and all on…YOU!
This is a practical, no-BS episode all about how you and I can design a better life in 2026.
David breaks down the mindset and behavioral principles he’s used for 30+ years coaching high performers and everyday people: creating and using a vision boards the right way, goal setting, upgrading self-talk and building the daily habits that move you forward.
This episode isn’t meant for everyone. It’s for people who are done with “hoping this year is better” and want tools to actually create change by taking their life and destiny into their own control.

Temuera Morrison is acting royalty.
From Shortland Street to Hollywood, Once Were Warriors to Star Wars, Moana, Aqua man, and beyond - this episode is a rare, unfiltered look at one of New Zealand’s most iconic actors, told the only way Tem knows how- with humility, humor, and honesty.
We talk about the moments people think they know. And the moments you’ve never heard before:
.
+ Why Tem avoids podcasts, and what finally made him say yes.
+ Why no one thought he was right for the role of Jake the Muss in Once Were Warriors, including himself and the psychological toll of playing violent roles.
+ The Hollywood years: Pamela Anderson, Marlon Brando, Harrison Ford, Val Kilmer, George Lucas and others.
+ Star Wars conventions, and why he never rushes fans who have waited to meet him
And so much more! This episode is 2 hours jam packed with great stories and life lessons from a man who has seen and done it all.

Sun, 25 Jan 2026 - 2h 02min - 468 - The Secret Life of a Private Investigator- Kallia McFarland
The guest on this episode is Kallia McFarland, a private investigator and the founder of Serpenti Investigations.
If you’re watched a lot of TV shows and movies like me and you thought “private investigator” means trench coat, binoculars, and staking out cheaters with a box of donuts…you’re not alone. But Kallia’s work is way broader, and way more interesting.
In this conversation we get into what she actually does day to day: fraud investigations, workplace and ACC-related cases, skip tracing (tracking down people who have gone into hiding) and serving legal documents, often in situations where things can go from 0-100 really quickly.
We also go into Kallia’s very unexpected path to this career: from Air Force medic, to primary school teacher, to becoming a PI, plus the personal health journey that changed her life, and how she ended up finding family in a way she never expected: becoming a wife and a stepmum, and hearing the word “Mum” from two kids who helped heal a part of her heart.
This one is honest, funny, and surprisingly human. And if you’ve ever wondered what private investigators really do in New Zealand, you’ll learn a lot.

Wed, 21 Jan 2026 - 1h 00min - 467 - Simon Gault on Losing 32kg, MasterChef, and NZ School Lunch "Rubbish"
Simon Gault is a man who wears many hats- celebrity chef, entrepreneur, pilot and most importantly- dad.
In this podcast conversation he let his guard down in ways that I wasn’t expecting. We discuss his early years in the kitchen under the notoriously prickly former podcast guest Tony Astle, stories from working as the personal chef for the Larry Ellison, building Euro with Leo Malloy and navigating fame during MasterChef at its peak.
Then there is all the non-work stuff: becoming a dad at 50, losing his father to motor neuron disease (and what assisted dying looked like in practice), and his own health journey with type 2 diabetes, losing 32kg, and the habits he now swears by.
When I asked Simon to be a guest, I expected it to be a great episode. But the conversation we had exceeded all my expectations.

Sun, 18 Jan 2026 - 1h 59min - 466 - Don McGlashan: The Stories Behind NZ’s Most Iconic Songs
Don McGlashan is a national treasure. One of the greatest NZ songwriters of all time. He is responsible for songs like Anchor me, Dominion Road and even Bathe in the river.
And at the time of recording this intro (in mid-January 2026) a documentary about his life is being released: “Anchor me: The Don McGlashan story”
In this candid, funny, and at times emotional conversation, we talk about how the doco came about, his thoughts on being a pensioner, the grief of losing his brother when he was 15, his mental health struggles, playing Glastonbury, how his hits Anchor Me and Bathe in the river came about, why he called Chris Bishop a dickhead and much more.

Sun, 11 Jan 2026 - 2h 10min - 465 - A Real-Time Psychic Reading With David The Medium
David Stevens from Melbourne, better known as “David the Medium” came in for a podcast in December 2025.
We had a full conversation about him and his backstory- that episode was released a few days before this one.
At the completion of that podcast I asked him if anyone else was in the room. This recording is what followed immediately after. In real time- no edits.
A little bit about David the Medium: he was a law graduate, criminal prosecutor, and counter-terrorism analyst. He was also a self-confessed sceptic. That all changed after a chance meeting with another medium sent his life in a completely different direction.
This episode is not about convincing anyone of anything. Whether you’re deeply spiritual, openly skeptical or somewhere in between - I hope this conversation will entertain you or make you think.

Wed, 07 Jan 2026 - 27min - 464 - He Speaks To The Dead: Australia’s Most Famous Psychic Medium
In this episode, I sit down with David Stevens from Melbourne, better known as “David the Medium.”
Full disclosure- I am extremely skeptical of this stuff. But a friend asked if I’d like David on the podcast. I watched some of his social media content and thought he would be a good guest for both believers and sceptics.
I’m pleased I did too- he is a very smart guy and I was impressed. If you give it a go I think you’ll enjoy this episode.
What makes David’s story so compelling is that he didn’t grow up seeing spirits or believing in the afterlife.
He was a law graduate, criminal prosecutor, and counter-terrorism analyst. He was also a self-confessed sceptic who lived firmly in logic and structure. That all changed after a chance meeting with another medium sent his life in a completely different direction.

Sun, 04 Jan 2026 - 1h 23min - 463 - The David Goggins of NZ: Jamie Milne's Insane World Records!
The best way to describe Jamie Milne is probably how he signed his Polaroid photo after our podcast- “The Maori David Goggins.”
This kid from Rotorua, abandoned by his mum and raised in poverty by a solo dad has grown up to become a man who is addicted to doing hard and uncomfortable stuff.
He is a multiple world record holder: his WRs include running the fastest 100km ultramarathon with a 20kg pack, doing the most push ups in an hour (over 1000) and doing over 4000 pull ups in 24 hours.
He has also ran the length of New Zealand twice, has done over 100 ultramarathons and attempted SAS selection at the age of 37
This conversation is a small part of the Jamie Milne story- a life shaped by hardship, failure, discipline, and an unrelenting drive to go always a little further.
Some of the stuff we talk about includes his up bringing without stability and learning resilience early
+ His rock-bottom moments and radical self-honesty
+ Alcohol addiction, recovery, and redefining identity
+ And why toughness is built, not inherited
Jamie Milne is built different- in the best possible way- you are going to love this episode.

Sun, 28 Dec 2025 - 1h 44min - 462 - Emma Gilmour on McLaren, Extreme E, and the Crash Everyone Googles
Emma Gilmour is one of New Zealand’s motorsport GOATs: a national rally champion, the first female factory driver for McLaren, a business owner and just a great Kiwi.
The day before we recorded this, Emma took me for a ride in her rally car, which if I’m being honest was more frightening than it was fun. I mean, afterwards it was fun- once I survived. So, it was nice to turn the tables and put Emma out of her comfort zone for this conversation.
We cover a lot of ground in this podcast and some pretty deep and confrontational stuff:
+ The mental and physical toll of two major concussions
+ Surviving an 8-roll crash at 120km/h
+ Her experiences in rallying as a woman in a male-dominated sport
+ Building her business- a Suzuki dealership in Dunedin from scratch
+ The friendships, failures, therapy sessions and tough decisions that shaped her life. And so much more.
Whether you’re a familiar with Emma Gilmour or not, I have no doubt you’ll walk away from this episode inspired- she’s a bloody legend.

Sun, 21 Dec 2025 - 1h 37min - 461 - NZ’s Most Controversial Influencer - Steven Setu on Masculinity and Freedom of Speech
Steven Setu is one of the most polarizing voices in New Zealand social media: part comedian, part shock-jock, part internet troll. Love him or hate him, Steven Setu gets clicks and people watch...and watch...and watch!
In this brutally honest conversation, Steven opens up in ways he never has before.
Between the hot takes, the outrageous claims and the controversy, we meet the little boy from West Auckland who grew up without a father, was bullied, struggled with weight and identity, and built an exterior as thick as concrete.
But we also see the softness that sits just beneath the surface, especially when he speaks about his mother, his family, and his desire to “never give up.”
Across nearly two hours, Steven and I discuss masculinity, mental health, cancel culture, freedom of speech, bullying, body image, resilience and much much more.
As always with these conversations- the goal remains the same- to get a greater understanding of a person, their actions and their thought processes through non- judgmental long form conversation.
This is Steven Setu: unfiltered, challenged, and closer than ever before.

Wed, 17 Dec 2025 - 1h 32min - 460 - “I Was Shot in the Face" - Detective Shaun Winstanley's Incredible Untold Story
This is Shaun Winstanley's first podcast and its an honour to have him on mine, because as you will learn within a few short minutes- Shaun is not a man who is comfortable talking about himself. He is a guest who represents what it means to come back from the unthinkable.
On July 20 2023, detective and tactical operator Shaun Winstanley ran into a busy high rise building in Central Auckland’s commercial bay area after an active shooter opened fire.
Minutes later, in a dark lift shaft, Shaun was shot in the face at point-blank range. He survived. Barely. And somehow, he found a way not just to recover, but to rebuild.
In this episode, Shaun takes us inside that day with remarkable clarity:
From racing into the CBD at high speed with sirens blasting, to passing terrified victims on the stairwell, to the exact moment the gunman fired and Shaun realized his teeth were shattered. This conversation is gripping, it’s confronting… and unbelievably human.
Shaun talks about::
The THREE rules that helped him stay mentally strong.
The long slow recovery.
His feelings about the gunman
Why he created a game-changing beverage as part of his healing process. And why he still feels the pull to return to the police.

Sun, 14 Dec 2025 - 1h 30min - 459 - Why Israel Adesanya Backed Brando Peričić Before the World Knew Him
Brando Pericic (AKA The Balkin Bear) is a UFC fighter.
He made his debut in Perth in September.
He won it in under 2 minutes in an explosive, violent and very fast fight.
This conversation is an intriguing look into the mindset of a very exciting UFC fighter with a huge future ahead of him.
He has a goal and a dream to be the best in the world…and after connecting with him I have no doubt that he will succeed.
In this conversation, we talk about his viral post-fight speech that included a smattering of words that earned him a telling off from his family in Adelaide.
His backstory which helped build the man he is today- things like the grief of losing close friends, going to visit his father in jail, being stabbed, finding himself homeless and some brutal mental health battles that almost cost him his life.
We talk sacrifice, purpose and the dream he’s chasing now to become one of the greatest heavyweights on Earth.
This conversation has so many layers to it: it’s emotional, inspiring, confronting, funny, and unbelievably honest. I promise you, after listening to this episode you will be fan and follower of "The Balkin Bear" for his entire career.

Wed, 10 Dec 2025 - 1h 43min - 458 - Underarm Bowling to the Rugby World Cup: Martin Snedden’s Incredible Life
Martin Snedden is a man who’s been at the centre of some of the biggest moments in New Zealand sport.
He played cricket for NZ in through the 1980s and was part of the infamous 1981 underarm match against Australia. He was one of the original members of the Beige Brigade and he’s got stories about playing with legends like Hadlee, Cairns and Crowe that are absolutely priceless.
But that’s only chapter one of his life.
After he retired as a player, Martin became CEO of New Zealand Cricket. He dealt with player strikes, bomb blasts outside team hotels, billion-dollar broadcast deals, and the politics behind international sport.
Then he took on the job of running the 2011 Rugby World Cup, the tournament that turned New Zealand into a “stadium of four million” and became one of this country’s great success stories.
Now in his 60s he’s as sharp, driven and purpose-filled as ever.
This conversation is full of nostalgia, leadership lessons, wild behind-the-scenes stories, and some really vulnerable reflections near the end about family, fear, purpose and what matters most.
I loved this chat: Snedds is generous, thoughtful, funny, and genuinely one of the good guys.

Sun, 07 Dec 2025 - 2h 22min - 457 - The McLaren F1 Legacy: An Intimate Conversation with Amanda McLaren
Today’s episode is a genuine honour.
I’m joined by Amanda McLaren, the daughter and the only child of legendary Kiwi motorsport pioneer Bruce McLaren, the man whose name still sits proudly on the nose of every McLaren Formula One car.
This conversation goes far deeper than F1 racing. Amanda shares stories that only she can tell, including:
+ How Bruce overcame Perthes Disease as a child: bedridden for two years and told he may never walk again.
+ What he was really like as a husband and a father, through Amanda’s memories, her mother’s stories, and the letters he wrote home from overseas.
+ The day her father died, and how she slowly pieced together what had happened through books and films rather than being told directly.
+ The remarkable strength of her mother, Patty, who not only lost Bruce but also lost a second child in the same period.
+ Behind-the-scenes stories from inside the McLaren Technology Centre.
+ And does she cheer for Liam Lawson when no one’s watching.
This is one of those rare interviews where history, innovation, family legacy, and emotion all collide in the most beautiful way.
It’s a privilege to help share the story of the Kiwi boy from Remuera who changed motorsport forever - through the daughter who carries his name.

Wed, 03 Dec 2025 - 1h 18min - 456 - Life with Cerebral Palsy: Mark Wilson aka Wobbles on Dating, Disability and Defying Expectations
In this deeply moving and also surprisingly funny episode, Mark Wilson joins me on the podcast.
Better known by his nickname “Wobbles”, a title he has proudly reclaimed.
Mark has cerebral palsy, but he makes it clear from the outset: this isn’t a sad story. It’s a story about grit, love, resilience, savage humour, and carving out a life he’s genuinely proud of.
Mark’s new book Wobbles pulls back the curtain on his early years, the intense therapy program that defined his childhood, the brutal bullying that shaped his teens, and the enormous sacrifices his parents made to give him a fighting chance.
Today, Mark is a business analyst at ANZ, drives a V8 Holden Kingswood, loves Devilskin, and is raising a blended family with his partner Elise.
Mark’s honesty is a gift: especially when he speaks about finding self-worth, surviving suicidal ideation and navigating dating with CP.

Sun, 30 Nov 2025 - 1h 39min - 455 - From 15 Armed Robberies to Changing Lives: The Jay Pukepuke Story
Jay Pukepuke went from a rugby league player with huge potential- he was a Warriors age-grade star and on track for a career in the NRL.
Then he went off the rails and committed 15 armed robberies which saw him incarcerated for six years across some of New Zealand’s toughest prisons.
Since then he has become a father, a mentor, an author, and the co-founder of an organization called “Bros for Change.”
Inside this episode, Jay opens up about::
The adrenaline addiction that drove him into crime
Hearing another inmate being beaten to death in a neighboring cell
The shame he still carries for the victims
The moment he finally realized he had to change and so much more!
His book Inner Warrior captures this journey on the page, but hearing him speak it is something else entirely. Jay is funny, confronting, and incredibly honest about the man he used to be… and the man he’s become.
If you like redemption arcs, this one is as authentic as they come.

Wed, 26 Nov 2025 - 1h 40min - 454 - Annah Stretton - The Kiwi Who Built a Fashion Empire from a Farm Shed

She survived public pile-ons that would crush most people.
She made millions, lost millions, and found her true purpose inside New Zealand’s women’s prisons.
At 65, Anna Stretton is sharper, tougher, funnier, and more unapologetically herself than ever…and her story is wild.
In this conversation, Annah S opens up about:
The thrill of making $500,000 profit in her first year
The humiliation of a cease-and-desist when she ripped off an American shoe brand.
What she’s learned from 12 years working with incarcerated women. And so much more!
This is an absolute masterclass in entrepreneurship, resilience, reinvention, and staying relentlessly true to yourself, especially when the world tries to knock you down.

Sun, 23 Nov 2025 - 1h 54min - 453 - 'Nobody Listened': They Missed the Tumour That Took My Sight
At 17, Mitch Wilson thought he was just an exhausted teenager.
But dizziness, daily vomiting, and excruciating headaches escalated into something far more sinister: a brain tumour that went undiagnosed for over a year due to medical neglect. The delay cost him most of his eyesight… but not his spirit.
In this conversation, Mitch opens up about:
The terror of going to sleep wondering if he’d wake up completely in the dark
The angry, self-destructive years that followed
How a German shepherd called Blaze and para-cycling helped pull him back
Grief, therapy, purpose, and trying to figure out what life looks like now.
Now a world-class para-cyclist and newly married, Mitch is still figuring out what life looks like in the long term.
This is a story of survival, identity, sport, grief, love, and the stubborn refusal to give up. And it is one of those episodes that will stay with you.

Wed, 12 Nov 2025 - 1h 53min - 450 - Surviving 30 Concussions: The Steve Devine Story
In this deeply emotional episode, former All Black halfback Steve Devine opens like never before about the physical and mental toll of his rugby career.
After enduring around 40 concussions in his career with Auckland and the All Blacks, Steve ended up in some disturbingly low places: bedridden, depressed, and contemplating the unthinkable.
These days Steve channels his experience into helping others, both as a firefighter and as an advocate for better brain injury management in sport.
Some of the stuff we cover here includes:
The brutal injury list from his professional rugby career, from 12 ankle surgeries to broken bones and relentless concussions.
The devastating impact his health had on his marriage and family life.
His transition into the New Zealand Fire Service, the trauma that comes with the job, and his advocacy for better mental health support for first responders.
His reflections on mental resilience, vulnerability, and why men need to get better at asking for help.
Then there are some cool old rugby yarns, including the bollocking he got from Eddie Jones as a young player and memories of playing with legends like Sir Michael Jones, Jonah Lomu, Andrew Mehrtens, and Richie McCaw, and what he learned from each.
This is an incredibly emotional episode from one of the real good guys.

Sun, 26 Oct 2025 - 1h 39min - 445 - 'I Was Drunk Playing for the All Whites': Michael Utting’s Redemption Story
In this deeply honest, warts n all conversation, former All Whites goalkeeper Michael Utting opens about a life that’s been full of extreme highs and devastating lows.
Once known as one of New Zealand’s most gifted footballers, Michael’s career took him around the world, including nearly a decade playing professionally in South Africa.
But behind the success was chaos: alcoholism, a near-fatal car crash that left him with a broken neck, and later, a heart attack that left him clinically dead for 29 minutes.
Then there is the scandal in his romantic relationships that made the national news. We talk about all of it in this conversation- the good the bad and the ugly.
Now in his mid-50s, sober and rebuilding his life, Michael reflects on the power of resilience, the weight of regret, and how helping others has given him new purpose.
As always, my goal with these discussions is to try and get to understand a person and their choices better through non judgmental long form conversation. Thanks for listening.

Wed, 22 Oct 2025 - 1h 59min - 444 - How Bernice Mene Became Kiwi Sporting Royalty
Bernice Mene is publicity-shy so this podcast appearance is a rare one (and a huge honor)
From captaining the Silver Ferns in her early twenties to raising three kids with her husband, former Black Caps captain Dion Nash, Bernice has spent a lifetime leading with purpose, empathy, and calm strength.
In this episode, we cover everything from her childhood in a powerhouse sporting family to the highs and lows of international netball, including what it was like debuting for New Zealand as a teenager, the crushing heartbreak of losing the 1999 World Champs final in Christchurch, and how injuries taught her resilience and perspective.
.
It’s also a love story: how she met Dion, the risks they took to build the incredible men’s skincare brand Triumph & Disaster, and the teamwork that’s kept their marriage rock solid for more than two decades.
Bernice is awesome. She is warm, wise, grounded, and humble. She has achieved so much, professionally and personally and after spending time with her it’s not hard to understand why. Everything she does, she does to the absolute best of her ability.

Frano Botica is known as one of the greatest goal kickers of all time. He wore four black jerseys (All Blacks, Kiwis, Māori All Blacks, Sevens).
He became a hero in Wigan as the fastest player to 1,000 points and helped launch the Warriors’ debut NRL season.
Then when the cheering stopped, he had to reinvent himself.
This podcast conversation is a small part of the Frano Botica story:
+ What it was like spending most of his All-Black career in the shadow of Grant Fox.
+ Some jaw-dropping stories about his teammates and friends Buck Shelford and Michael Jones.
+ The time he feared for his life when a riot broke out in the stands in Argentina.
+Then there is the off-field stuff- adjusting to life after professional sport and the mental grind of starting again, financial missteps, surviving a stroke, finding joy as a grandfather, reflections on life now and much more.
Whether you were a fan of Frano who is curious to learn more about his life after league. Or you know nothing about him, I know you will love this chat.

Sun, 12 Oct 2025 - 1h 49min - 441 - Willie Jackson Tells All: Winston, Seymour & Jacinda, Radio Backlash with John Tamihere
Willie Jackson is one of the most outspoken and fascinating figures in New Zealand politics.
From freezing works to nightclub bouncer to broadcasting to politics, Willie has done it all. And it’s been a life defined by advocacy, resilience, and a refusal to be silenced.
In this conversation, I bring in 13-year-old Henry Blakeman in to cover some political stuff.
Then we get deeply personal:
+ Willie opens-up about his mum’s journey from cleaner to Dame.
+ What it’s really like working with Winston Peters, David Seymour, and Jacinda Ardern
+ The values that shaped him from a kid who “failed at school” to a union leader at 21 and a voice for Māori representation across media and government.
+ His very public controversies, the so called “train-wreck” interview with Jack Tame and his relationship with ZB stars Mike Hosking and Heather Duplessis Allen.
+ We discuss aging, heart surgery, and why resilience and compassion have become the guiding forces in his life.
This is a conversation about mistakes, redemption, and legacy… and a rare glimpse into the heart and mind of one of New Zealand’s most polarizing, passionate, and human political voices.

Wed, 08 Oct 2025 - 2h 23min - 440 - Nigel Latta: What Really Matters When You’re Told You’re Dying
On the 30th of September 2025, Nigel Latta passed away. He was only 58.
The week before, he went to see his oncologist and was given the heartbreaking news his body couldn’t take any more treatment.
He arrived at the meeting optimistic but pivoted to acceptance immediately.
That sums up Nigel Latta- he died the way he lived: brave, courageous, fearless, resilient, considerate.
This episode was originally recorded in 2024, not long after Nigel Latta received his terminal cancer diagnosis. It is being re-released now, following his recent passing, with deep respect for the extraordinary man he was.
What you're about to watch is not a conversation about death — it's a powerful reflection on life. In this interview, Nigel speaks with clarity, humour, humility and strength about facing the end, loving deeply, working with purpose, and the beauty of being human — flaws, fumbles, feelings and all.
He talks openly about:
Getting the diagnosis and telling his familyPractising the resilience he once taughtConfronting mortality without fearWhat really matters in the endWhy he doesn't care about legacyRegrets, gratitude, and learning how to just “be”Nigel was many things: psychologist, broadcaster, author, mentor, mate. But above all, he was real - and this conversation is one of the most honest things you’ll ever hear.
Rest easy, Nigel. Thank you for everything.
