Listener Shoutout: Bamako Mali. I’m still not sure how someone in the city found my podcast,but I’m glad that they listened to at least one episode. Bamako is the capital of the country of Mali, which is the legacy of the Malian empire. This city has seen the likes of Mansa Musa who traded salt for gold and then messed up the whole gold market when he went on hajj and flooded it with gold gifts. People have lived in the city since the paleolithic era. Of course it was also colonized by France during the ransacking of Africa by the European powers. It did make me smile when they dropped French from their official languages. And so today, I’ll be attempting the main language Bambara. Rabat, Morocco's capital, rests along the shores of the Bouregreg River and the Atlantic Ocean. It's known for landmarks that speak to its Islamic and French-colonial heritage, including the Kasbah of the Udayas. This Berber-era royal fort is surrounded by formal French-designed gardens and overlooks the ocean. The city's iconic Hassan Tower, a 12th-century minaret, soars above the ruins of a mosque. There is evidence of people residing where the city stands, going back to around 400 bce. During the early 19th century, there was a lot of upheaval and migration in the area. In 1966, it became only the 11th British dependency to become independent. It is on the very edge of Botswana and South Africa. It is a great place for seeing lots of beautiful wildlife. When he gets there, he falls asleep in his boat and is rescued by a water nymph. Will he stay in the underwater palace or will his mother's love bring him home? Only the old man of the sea can tell.

In this chapter of the Panchatantra, Victor tells the story of a weaver who falls in love with a princess, who is way out of his league. To win her over, he dresses up as Vishnu, and with the help of his friend's flying Garuda machine, he is able to convince the princess that he really is Vishnu. This goes great until the king finds out about her being in love. The king thinks that Vishnu is on his side and proceeds to anger the kingdom that he should be paying tribute to. This is all done to show Cheek that sometimes even the Gods can be caught off guard when plans are well laid out.

The first two stories are essentially the same, just told slightly differently. A white man is foolish enough to help a trapped snake who wants to bite him. He is only saved by someone smarter than himself.

The third story is about Jackal and Hyena eating clouds. Jackal jumps down and Hyena catches him, but when it is Hyena's turn to catch, he fails. 

And finally why the heron has a bent neck. It has to do with Heron telling Dove that Jackal cannot fly. Jackal was getting free food before that and decided that Heron needs to learn a lesson.

It takes time, but he remembers some advice about killing centipedes and is rewarded with several treasures. One treasure is a bag of rice that never goes empty, thus earning him the name Tawara Toda.

In this story, a man remarries and his new wife doesn't like his kids. So all three are tricked into an apple pit. They were going to eat the youngest, but then she makes a wish to have pick ax hands. The older sisters make promises that they cannot keep, so they conspire to make the youngest sister's promise not come true. But the youngest sister is proves her words are true through some golden haired kids.

And in the second story, a professor thinks that the creator has made a mistake by putting figs in trees and watermelons on the ground. Luckily it was a fig that dropped on his nose to let him know that he was wrong.

In this story, three children of the old woman are eaten up by a Dew (evil spirit). To get them out, her youngest son has to stop playing in the ashes and defeat the Dew. Once he does, what is his reward? His wife is snatched by his brothers and he is stuck in the underworld. See the Youngest of the Three in the Armenian stories for a parallel story.

In the first story, a General is lost in the desert with his army. A bird and an ant have an argument next to the dying general about which is more important to the man. I’m sure he was glad to hear them arguing while he was dying of thirst.

And in the second story, three girls are admitted to a school, but have to dress up as boys. Their beauty makes the other boys want to copy their names, but their courage and sense of morals set them apart from the rest.

In the first story, the king has twins which is not good news. Instead of killing them like the custom dictates, he lets them flee and grow up elsewhere. When they come back to rule, jealousy turns one of them into a murderer.

In the second story, the hunter Akiti (last seen in Episode 87), is hunting the Leopard. But Leopard eats some magic plants and isn't harmed.

In the third story, Leopard is about to eat some a bathing woman, when she launches her loofah at him and gives him his spots.

Brother Bear just want some help with his work, so he invites brother Hyena (Bouki) and Brother Rabbit. Well, you know having Brother Rabbit around is going to make for some trouble, so Brother Rabbit makes up a whole plan to eat all of the food. When he is caught, more hijinks ensue.

And in the second story, a drunk man thinks he can communicate with the frogs.

In this story, a young girl named Pear Blossom has a new stepmom and half sister. She is forced to do a lot of manual labor and is never allowed to go to the big fairs. But since she is a good person, the animals of the wild like to help her out. After befriending a strange cow and getting the tastiest fruit ever, her sister wants a chance to stay at home. This is good for Pear Blossom because now she can go to the big parade.

In the first story, the Rajah gets mad that his son is hanging out with another boy, so he gets a woman to come between them. Then the Vizier's son is killed because the Rajah's son got all jealous. But then he needed the Vizier's son to figure out a riddle, so he came back. 

Then in the second part of the story, the Rajah's son gets jealous all over again, and then there is a jail, some hot oil, and some crossdressing to get out of jail. It's quite a ride.

But a mysterious guy comes along and tells him he can have her and any other woman he wants, if he'll just take this coin. The man is familiar. Could it be?

In the first story, a boy named Vico doesn't listen to his grandma and plays marble games late into the night. One night, he meets another marble player who has some cool marbles. They play and Vico loses, but he is saved by his grandma. He vows to win and aims for a rematch. Can he beat the imp of the valley?

The second story is a bonus. I wasn't going to release it yet, but it goes so well with Day of the Dead that I wanted to include it. That's why there is minimal sound design. In the story, a playboy seduces a married woman and her husband comes home to challenge them. The husband is killed and the new couple runs away, but every All Soul's Day the husband comes back to haunt the couple. Will they ever find peace?

In the first story, Kulloo stays with his master after his master's wife is kidnapped. Later he saves the man from being killed and helps him find his kidnapped wife. And even after all of that, Kulloo still has to make the ultimate sacrifice. Poor Kulloo

In the second story, a Rani tells the Rajah that they will become parents. The Rajah is super excited because this is the only wife without a child. The only trouble is that she isn't pregnant, she only has a pet squirrel. So she convinces a few people that the daughter needs to stay hidden until after marriage. In a great reason to get rid of arranged marriages, Shahzada marries the squirrel. How will it all end?

In the second story, we learn all about the adventures of Benito. He has an epic adventure just looking for work for the king. But through his kindness, he gets everything he wants and enough to take care of his parents as well.

In the third story, Juan is sent out to get firewood. Instead of getting any, he meets a magical tree and gets lots of gifts only to lose them on his way home. This story feels a lot like The Sifter story from the Azores. Can he make it up to his family? Boombaya Boombaye!

In the fourth story, Juan is told to gather some guavas. But because he is a jerk, he gets wasps for the guests instead.

They hope that a Chinese dragon will keep the fire spirit at bay, but the dragon proves expensive and fickle. Next they try a pond, but the fire spirit figures that out. Finally, a great stone lion is carved. Will it be a match for the great fire spirit? Listen and find out.

Here are three stories from James A Honey's African Folktales book.

In story one, the animals dance until the water comes, but Rabbit doesn't want get his paws dirty. After the animals get water, rabbit swims in the water and makes it all muddy. The animals decide that he should pay for his attitude and rudeness. But who will catch him and who will make him pay?

In the second story, Jackal is caught in a trap while trying to sneak off with some young meat. Monkey thinks this is hilarious, but Jackal convinces him that it is all just a game and that Monkey should come and try. Will he fall for it?

In story three, Lion and Jackal are again hunting together. It goes about as well as it did last time, and Lion ends up getting more than his fair share.

In the first story, two well known mountains get into a bragging match. One boasts of having magical birds whose feathers are desired by kings. The other responds that people like him better because he is gentle and welcoming. It's an interesting match of power versus grace.

In the second story, a son is just not interested in school. He is a bright boy, but education is no fun. So he runs off to make money in the big city. Will he come back home and take care of his parents? Will this coincide with me coming home to my parents?

In the first story, a magician is off on a walk in the woods. He came to a place where there were a lot of dull brown birds with beautiful voices. He asked the birds if they would be up for a bit of swapping: their beautiful voices for some lovely feathers.  

In the second story, we learn about the origin of a beautiful flowing river and the betrayal that lead to the stagnant one next to it.  And in the third story, we hear the sad tale of Isokun, who just wants a baby of her own.
