Ultra marathon legend Sam Harvey pushes the limit of what the human body can do.

He's a world record holder for the New Zealand Backyard Ultra, a 677 kilometre race which he finished in 101 hours, and has champion titles in utltra races all over the world.

He's now set his sights on breaking the world record at the Dead Cow Backyard Ultra in Queensland this weekend.

He aims to finish the 800-kilometre race in 120 hours - That's five continuous days and nights of running. All while raising money for charity I Am Hope.

Embattled Broadcasting Minister Melissa Lee has been stripped of the portfolio and booted from Cabinet. 

The Prime Minister has revealed the change after weeks of Lee struggling to front on the collapse of Newshub and cuts at TVNZ. 

Chris Luxon says Justice Minister Paul Goldsmith will pick up the portfolio. 

He says there has been significant change in the media environment which has moved quickly, and he wants a good senior Minister responsible. 

Political Editor Jason Walls told Si and James that this was unexpected news, but it makes sense. 

He said that Luxon didn’t say that the Ministers were doing a bad job, they just weren’t performing optimally and so he had to move them around. 

Lee continues to hold the Economic Development portfolio, which Walls said is quite an unusual one to have outside of Cabinet, especially for a party that has such a strong focus on economic development.

New Zealand school students are among the worst-behaved kids in the OECD and behaviour has worsened in the last two years, a new report has found.

A report released by the Education Review Office (ERO) has called for classroom behaviour to become a priority and a more “national approach” to worsening behaviour.

“We know that disruptive classroom behaviour is a significant and persistent issue in New Zealand - over the last 20 years our classroom behaviour has been amongst the worst in the OECD,” ERO’s Education Evaluation Centre head Ruth Shinoda said.

“But we also know it is getting worse, with over half of teachers saying all types of disruptive behaviour had become worse in the last two years.”

As a result of the report’s findings, the ERO has made 16 recommendations, including better training for teachers, a national approach to behaviour and clear guidance for schools on having effective consequences for poor behaviour.

Finance Minister Nicola Willis says the Government's still committed to cutting tax in May's Budget, despite worsening economics.

She's revealed in today's Budget Policy Statement, Treasury now expects 0.1 percent GDP growth this year.

The forecast last year was 1.5 percent.

The Finance Minister says surplus isn't possible in 2026-27 - but it could be achievable the following financial year, although it isn't a given.

She says Labour's spending legacy needs to be corrected in future Budgets.

She says the Government will set a moderate, sustainable course of fiscal correction over several years - and any new spending will be targeted, and within their means.

Wayne Brown grew up in Auckland, attended Auckland Grammar, and went on to get a degree in engineering.

After spending several years overseas he returned to New Zealand and set up an engineering consultancy, diversifying into property development and kiwifruit growing.

He’s chaired health boards and been a director of organisations including TVNZ, Māori TV, Vector and Transpower, including appointments by both left and right-wing governments.

He first entered politics in 2007, becoming Far North Mayor until 2013 and in 2022 he of course successfully ran for the Auckland mayoralty.

The Principal of one of New Zealand's top schools has slammed New Zealand's education system - saying it's heading towards rock bottom.

Auckland Grammar head Tim O'Connor says the profession isn’t as valued as it once was.

He told the Herald's Leaders Getting Coffee podcast that's evident by people not wanting to enter the profession and the fact that schools can’t easily access specialist teachers.

He says the system's not doing itself any favours by lowering standards within the curriculum.

Tim Southee was handed a Test debut at the age of 19 against England. He responded taking 5 wickets for 55 before smashing 77 off 40 balls in the second innings with nine sixes.

Since then he has progressed into one of the best bowlers in world cricket, across all three forms of the game, going on to form one of the world's best new-ball partnerships with Trent Boult and establishing himself as one of the most successful players in the modern era.

He is New Zealand’s second all-time leading Test wicket-taker, behind the great Sir Richard Hadlee, and the world’s all-time leading T20 international wicket-taker.

The Government's implementing five key targets it says will drive better outcomes for all New Zealanders.

Minister Mark Mitchell spent his early years living on Whenuapai Air Force Base where his father was a Flight Lieutenant.

After leaving school he worked in the farming sector before joining the New Zealand Police during which and was a member of the Dog Section and Armed Offender’s Squad.

He then went on to work in international political hotspots, including the start-up of his own company specialising in hostage rescue, security, and risk management.

He first entered parliament in 2011, and is now the Minister for Police, Corrections, and Emergency Management and Recovery.

World Vision is reporting a 56% increase in 12 months in the cost of a selected food basket that includes things like rice, bananas, chicken, and eggs.

Australia, in the same period (2022 to 2023) saw a 29% drop for the same basket.

A young Bunnings staff member in Dunedin was spotted wearing a large clock around his neck while working in the trades area of the store.

Puzzled customers asked him why and he told them he'd been late for work.

Bunnings have said their intention was good natured and no concerns had been raised. 

However the sector union said that bullying and hazing young workers is outdated and said anyone shamed should speak to a higher manager.

The Finance Minister says the fight against inflation is not over yet -- as the Reserve Bank opts to keep the Official Cash Rate unchanged.

The OCR will stay at 5.5 percent, which is in line with most economists' expectations.

Nicola Willis says the bank clearly believes it's making progress in the fight against inflation, which is good news for every New Zealander.

But she says interest rates are high for anyone with a mortgage or a credit card bill, and she wants to see inflation come down so interest rates can eventually follow.

After representing New Zealand at the U19 World Cup, Finn Allen made the move from Auckland to Wellington for an explosive 2020-21 summer where he became the top run scorer in the Dream11 Super Smash, propelling the top-order batsman to make his debut for the Black Caps in 2021 at just 21 years old.

In January he played one of the great innings ever seen in T20 international cricket, blasting 137 off 62 balls against Pakistan – Breaking several records in the process including most sixes in an innings, highest individual score, most runs in a series, and highest strike rate of a Black Cap in T20.

Labour's leader says senior MP Ginny Andersen went too far in accusing the Police Minister of being paid to kill people.

She made the claim on Newstalk ZB this morning- referencing Mark Mitchell's time as a security contractor in Iraq.

Mitchell dubbed it a character assassination - and Andersen has acknowledged her comments crossed a line.

Kevin called Simon Barnett and James Daniels and told them about his time serving in the British Army in Iraq.  Turns out he was co-located on the same compound as Mark Mitchell and he gave Si & James an insight into the work being undertaken.

Green MP Fa’anana Efeso Collins has died after collapsing while participating in a charity event in central Auckland. 

Collins was taking part in ChildFund Water Run to raise funds to support local communities in the Pacific at 9am in Auckland’s Britomart when he collapsed. 

Emergency services immediately responded with CPR and defibrillators to treat the MP and continued working on him for an hour. 

An organiser for the event confirmed to the Herald he had died at the scene. 

Collins, 49, is survived by his wife Fia and two daughters. 

Political Editor Jason Walls told Simon and James that select committee meetings had to be postponed after the news broke, and the MPs leaving the meetings were visibly shaken. 

Collins was a relatively new Green MP but had been a member of the Labour party for years prior, and many across the political spectrum have been in mourning this morning. 

An emotional afternoon is expected, as Parliament has one last meeting before adjourning until next Tuesday. 

Walls said that there will be speeches from the Prime Minister, the Green Party leaders, and various other party leaders. 

He said it going to be extremely emotional, and the tributes are expected to be touching.

On this exact date 50 years ago, Dick Tayler stunned the world by winning the 10,000 metre gold at the 1974 Christchurch Commonwealth Games – instantly becoming one of New Zealand’s athletics most iconic victories.

Dick later worked as a marketing manager for the Harness Racing Association, a brewing company and served as President of the Canterbury Rugby Supporters Club.

In 2014 he was appointed a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to athletics.

He said he hoped Jodi was “listening somewhere else now” - she’d been his biggest supporter for 35 years, listening to every show and offering advice and guidance.

“I don’t know if I will get over her loss. I don’t want to,” said Barnett, his voice trembling.

He said he wanted to laugh and joke again, but also wanted people to know that Jodi would never be far from his mind.

“It’s actually lovely to be back. I didn’t know how I would go,” he said, as he kicked off the second hour of his 12pm-4pm Afternoons show on ZB, with co-host James Daniels.

He said he’d had a terrible sleep overnight, as he prepared for what seemed like the first day at school.

In the first hour of the show, he said it was “weird to be back but good to be back”.

“I have been on the cusp of tears all day,” the Afternoons host told his listeners, as he opened his first show of the year - the first time he’s been back on air after a six-month absence.

For the first time in 35 years his biggest supporter was not listening on earth, he said. His routine was now a lot different.

Jodi died in October following a long battle with brain cancer.

Daniels welcomed back Barnett - “I have got goosebumps” - and said he was missed: “Nau mai, hoki mai,” he reiterated.

Barnett, Daniels and producer Tyler Adams had caught up over pizza in Sumner on Saturday night.

Barnett had shouted the pair - Daniels joked that he had asked for Dom Perignon at the pizzeria on that basis.

Barnett thanked the hundreds of ZB listeners who had shown their love and support for him. He joked that the love texts might well turn to hate in the following hours as he opined on various news topics.

In a feature interview with the NZ Herald at the weekend, Barnett spoke of his return to the airwaves, saying he would not shy away from speaking about the loss of Jodi.

He described her as his biggest supporter and an unofficial content director, listening to every show and offering guidance and advice over many years.

“Since I started broadcasting, I’ve always wanted to be an authentic broadcaster - just tell it how it is, no fake news,” said Barnett.

“To some extent, I will mention it, not at length, but it will come up, I’m sure, and I’ll acknowledge it. I won’t have any issues with acknowledging it or talking about it.

“Hopefully it will make me a more empathetic broadcaster. I will be mindful that Jodi just used to love to listen.

“I’m not going to go into a monologue. I’m not going to write an editorial about it, I don’t imagine, but just when it comes up, I won’t shy away from it.”

Reconnecting with his listeners will play a critical role as Barnett deals with the grief of losing Jodi.

“The listeners have always been exceptionally good to me. Whether it’s in music radio or whether it’s in talk, they’ve always been very kind to me.

“I have really appreciated that kindness.”

Barnett, 56, has been back reading and watching the news in recent weeks.

“It’s a pretty broken world, I have to say. I find it challenging because I’m struggling to perk up anyway.

“And then I look at the world and I look at Israel and Palestine - it beggars belief what’s happening there. You’re aghast at the suffering and then the Russian-Ukrainian war is still going. How does this happen?

“I find that challenging, but thankfully I’m the midday-to-4pm host and I’m not doing Breakfast. I can still have some levity in our show with James, and I’m looking forward to that.”

Barnett speaks to Jodi “all the time”, through the power of prayer and God.

“Our faith is paramount. I always go through God. I say, ‘God, can you get Jodi for me’. I chat away.

“I look at her photo, I kiss her every night before bed. I look at her every morning when I wake up and I say ‘Good morning love’.”

Jodi will be at the forefront of his mind as he returns to radio.

“People say, ‘How are you doing?’ I don’t know how to answer that ... I suppose I’m doing okay,” Barnett says.

“I am stronger than I was three months ago, definitely. Three months ago, I couldn’t stop crying. Every moment of the day I was right on the cusp of tears and it was awful.

“Now it does come in waves. I don’t imagine that the waves will ever end.”

National will need New Zealand First's Winston Peters alongside Act's 11 seats to form a government after the special votes come in. 

National has lost two seats, taking its 50 seats down to 48. 

Labour's Te Atatu MP Phil Twyford avoided being another victim of the so-called "bluenami", holding onto his seat by just 131 votes. 

Labour's Rachel Boyack also clawed back Nelson by 29 votes, while its Mt Albert candidate Helen White managed to hold on to her seat by just 20 votes.  

Newstalk ZB Political Editor Jason Walls says some of the seats were even closer to the wire. 

He told James Daniels and Tyler Adams Te Pati Maori's Takutai Tarsh Kemp won the Tamaki Makaurau seat by a razor-thin margin. 

“And she won it by a majority of just four votes. Not 40, not 400, just four votes. I mean it’s incredibly thin.”

The Maori Party took two seats from Labour - Tamaki Makaurau and Te Tai Tokerau.

Andy Ellis is a man of many talents.

He made 154 appearances for the Crusaders, 28 test caps for the All Blacks, he’s a serial business man, award winning landscaper, author and radio host.

For the last three years Rawiri Waititi has been a relentless force in parliament advocating for Māori.

He won back Te Waiariki for Te Pati Māori in 2020, becoming co-leader of the party upon entering parliament and has built a strong profile with his colourful korero in the house.

A rescue on Mount Ngauruhoe is prompting warnings for other trampers.

A helicopter had to pluck two lightly dressed walkers from near the summit on Saturday, wearing street shoes, jeans, t-shirts and hoodies.

Land Search and Rescue head Carl McOnie says they carried out 436 rescues last year.

He says they don't like to worry people by revealing the cost of rescues.

McOnie explained they don't want people to put off calling when they're in dangerous situations.

This after a Canadian real estate agent was fined nearly 25 grand after taking a cheeky swig of milk from the bottle in a client's fridge.

Earl says the downtown CBD site is one he regularly works on and he was set to go there this morning.

He says it was pure chance he wasn't there.
