Dr. Dharam Ramnani is a board-certified anatomic and clinical pathologist in private practice since 1999 in Richmond, Virginia, USA. He received his MBBS degree from Maharaja Sayajirao University in Vadodara, India, and MS (Biological Sciences) from The University of Iowa, Iowa City, IA. He completed pathology residency and surgical pathology fellowship from Univ. of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Dallas, Texas, and urologic pathology fellowship from the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota, before settling down in Richmond. Dr. Ramnani has been passionate about photographing human cancers from the early days of his residency training. Born in a small town of central India, Vandana's initial educational journey and early life is discussed and how that leads to her decision to do research on Sindhi language and culture. She is also trying to digitise Sindhi rare books. Full of insights into a young persons educational and professional choices. Many shaping moments are discussed with a message for Sindhi parents and youngsters.

What is Sindhi Otaak podcast series?
Purpose and its scope. This is an introduction to Sindhi Otaak podcast. The purpose of the podcast and its scope is described.

Otaak is a Sindhi word meaning a room or drawing room where in olden days in Sindh, people use to sit and discuss social and other matters. It seems to be borrowed in Sindhi from Persian, where it is pronounced something like utaq. It is also found in Turkish اطاق (otagh) Noun T A room, a chamber. A compartment. A cabin. [The Turkish word is اوطه]
اطاق یذیرائی A parlour. A drawingroom. A reception room.
اطاق نشیمن A sitting-room.
اطاق تجارت Chamber of Commerce.

Episode 3: Library and wandering mind In this podcast I discuss my first encounter with great authors in Gujarat Vidyapeeth library in Ahmedabad, India. I discuss how open access libraries are important part of discovering unexpected subjects, writers and ideas. I also reflect briefly on the book The Worldly Philosophers, by Robert Heilbroner. Prof. Ganesh Devy, has written and edited close to ninety books in areas including Literary Criticism, Anthropology, Education, Linguistics and Philosophy. We hear more about how Prof. Devy came to do research in languages and culture. He carried out one of the largest public linguistic survey in India and wrote many multilingual books based on findings. We hear fascinating story of Sign languages in India. We hear why Prof. Devy calls language as a bridge between consciousness and the universe. G. N. Devy has received several Lifetime Achievement Awards. He was awarded Padma Shri on 26 January 2014 in recognition of his work with denotified and nomadic tribes and endangered languages. He was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award (1993) for After Amnesia, and the SAARC Writers’ Foundation Award (2001) for his work with denotified tribals. He was given the reputed Prince Claus Award (2003) for his work for the conservation of tribal arts and craft. His Marathi book Vanaprasth received eight awards including the Durga Bhagwat Memorial Award and the Maharashtra Foundation Award. Along with Laxman Gaikwad and Mahashweta Devi, he was one of the founders of The Denotified and Nomadic Tribes Rights Action Group (DNT-RAG). He won the 2011 Linguapax Prize for his work for the preservation of linguistic diversity.

Book review of Tryst With Koki by Dr Subhadra Anand. This beautiful book that tells the story of a Sindhi family that is uprooted from its ancestorial land of Sindh. The Partition of India remains one of the tragic legacies of British imperialism. The cost of independence of India included immeasurable human suffering, loss of homeland, existential threat to the language, life and culture of Sindhi people, particularly Hindu Sindhis who were in minority in Sindh before the Partition. The book tells the story of a resilient community that survived the chaotic migration from Sindh which became part of newly created Pakistan in 1947.

In this conversation we talk to Dr. Harish Poptani who is Professor and Chair of the Centre for preclinical Imaging at the University of Liverpool since Dec 2014. Before that he did research as post doctoral scientist in Finland and the USA where was Associate Professor at the University of Pennsylvania, USA from 1997-2014. He did his Higher education - BSc - PhD - Lucknow, India 1985- 1995 and basic education - Kanpur, Ranchi, Patna. Born to a Sindhi family in Devlali Camp (near Nasik), can speak Sindhi fluently. Besides professional activities, am quite active with the UK Hindi Association, based in London, towards teaching Hindi (reading, writing and speaking) to first and second generation Indians. We talked about his inspiration, upbringing and interest educational and professional journey. His three messages for young people as well as his humble service to humanity motivation are worth listening. He is a brain scientist. His research area is MRI imaging and its use to support brain cancer treatment.
