We're coming to you live from the IEC's Results Centre and we are speaking to political leaders about their thoughts of the results thus far.

The results have started to come in from the 2026 Local Government Elections in South Africa. With the counting just under 20% complete, we're bringing you analysis of the picture we're seeing so far; how is the ANC doing across municipalities that have been historically strong-holds for them, how are other relatively newer and smaller parties performing and what the national picture looks like.

We're coming to you live from the IEC's Results Operation Centre (ROC) in Midrand, Johannesburg and we'll be bringing you extensive coverage of the election results, analysis and interviews with some key political leaders as the results trickle in. Stay tuned to SMWX throughout the week.

Vuyo Zungula returns to SMWX to discuss his bid to become Johannesburg’s mayor and the African Transformation Movement’s plans to tackle the city’s service-delivery failures. He outlines proposals to repair infrastructure, reduce reliance on water tankers, restructure municipal entities and confront what he describes as criminal networks operating within and around the city. Zungula sets out ATM’s conditions for joining a coalition, addresses voter disillusionment and raises his concerns about electoral integrity. Drawing lessons from the Madlanga Commission, he argues for independent investigations into municipal corruption and explains how he would measure progress on financial management, water losses, support for small businesses and the reclamation of hijacked buildings. Why vote when it feels as though one person cannot change anything? Acting Justice Tembeka Ngcukaitobi unpacks South Africa’s Constitution and Bill of Rights in an interactive lecture with learners at the Constitutional Court. He explains who the Constitution protects, the distinction between rights reserved for citizens and those enjoyed by everyone, and what this means for access to education, healthcare and protection from violence. Through practical examples and questions from the students, he explores what the right to basic education should mean in their own classrooms, why rights come with responsibilities, and how ordinary people give meaning to the Constitution. The discussion also tackles discrimination against migrants, gender-based violence, frustrations over service delivery, landmark court judgments and accountability when government fails to comply with court orders. At its heart is Ngcukaitobi’s idea of “constitutionalism from below”: a Constitution that people must actively build, defend and bring to life in their communities.

The Constitutional Court has given the ANC and its SG Mbalula a lifeline by granting them leave in the application against the IEC. We unpack the judgments and its implications.

Action SA's Cape Town mayoral candidate Dereleen James joins us on SMWX for a wide-ranging interview ahead of the 2026 local government elections. James challenges the DA's record of governance under Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis, questioning whether Cape Town's reputation as a well-run city reflects the lived realities of residents in poorer communities. She outlines her plans to tackle gang violence, drug abuse and crime on the Cape Flats, while addressing the city's deep inequalities, housing crisis, rising municipal tariffs and cost of living. The conversation also explores Action SA's electoral prospects, possible coalitions with the DA, illegal immigration, affordable housing and her proposal to introduce a tourist levy to help fund public services. In the hearing yesterday, we heard a phone call recording between Mr M and Serge Cabonge where Cabonge made some serious allegations. In this episode we unpack the consequences of this recording and the Adv Madonsela vs Impeachment Committee matter before the Western Cape High Court.

Has taxi-boss and Sibanyoni-associate, Bafana Sindane, dodged the Madlanga Commission? Sindane's legal representatives applied for a postponement at the Commission, citing medical reasons and a "spiritual seclusion" as reasons that necessitated the postponement. The Commission granted the postponement until Monday next week and Sindane is expected to give evidence then. Cat Matlala's wife, Tsakani Matlala, was also arrested a day ago and we unpack this and more!
