Want to bet on the U.S. invading Iran? Sure why not? You can do exactly that with prediction markets, the billionaire-backed platforms that gamble on the future while sucking your wallet dry. Francesca looks at the very recent rise of platforms like Polymarket and Kalshi which are now partnering with everything from awards shows to UFC fights, and even news outlets. After sports betting was legalized in 2018, the online gambling model that has lured many Americans in is expanding. This time to politics, culture and current events. You can now bet on how many deportations there will be in a year, or if Kristi Noem will keep her job. It’s as dystopian as it sounds but it’s having real-life consequences. People are losing thousands of dollars on these betting schemes, which are dubiously legal. Polymarket already paid out a massive settlement to the Commodities Futures Trading Commission in 2022 and is now facing a class-action lawsuit out of the Southern District of New York.  But the platforms aren’t slowing down despite the legal hurdles. That’s in part thanks to Trump’s newly minted head of the Commodities Futures Trading Commission, who’s a former crypto lawyer, who wants to remove regulations.  Kalshi CEO Tarek Mansour wants to ‘financialize everything’ and hopes prediction markets grow to be a trillion-dollar venture. The problem? They’re rife with corruption. Insider trading is everywhere in sports betting, and now that same cheating streak appears to be rearing its head in political betting as well.  Beyond that, what does it mean when we stop being actors in the world around us and simply become gamblers? And what lengths could people go to to see their bets pay off? Black Mirror could never. Every fantasy franchise has an insufferable part of its fan base. But this one takes the cake. Powerful conservatives are obsessed with The Lord of The Rings. We know this because they name their military tech companies, surveillance companies and venture capital firms after objects in Middle Earth. Billionaire Peter Thiel has named 10 of his companies after things in Lord of The Ring, including Palantir, the Trump's regime's authoritarian surveillance company of choice. JD Vance has called himself a "Lord of the Rings guy", Elon Musk has hot anti-woke takes on The Rings of Power, and Jeff Bezos helped make that series by buying the rights to the franchise via Amazon. Even the far right even in Spain and Italy identify with the Lord of The Rings. They believe they’re in a fight against dark forces, and that they’re heroic men of Gondor, or Elves of Rivendell. Yeah that’s right: the people helping ICE disappear mothers and fathers think they’re the good guys. What’s worse is that they believe that Tolkien’s Catholicism means he would agree with their world view that immigrants, feminists and global cooperation are the enemy.  Francesca digs deep into “The Nerd Reich’s” misreading of Lord of the Rings and how they took all the wrong lessons from the story. There’s nothing political about tragedy...that is, unless every politician at every level of government did absolutely nothing to prevent it.  What happened in Texas on July 4th wasn’t an act of God, it was an act of recklessness from lying politicians and yes, the voters who still believe them. Over 135 people are dead because at the county level, the state level and the federal level, Republicans have failed to take climate preparedness seriously. Whenever there was a decision to fund it, they decided to cut taxes instead. Whenever there was a discussion to take climate change seriously, they’ve called it a hoax.   Francesca takes you through EVERY level of this colossal failure: from Camp Mystic’s director waiting an hour to evacuate campers, to Kerr County’s refusal to pay for a mere $1 million flood warning system, to Texas state legislators shooting down climate infrastructure projects while simultaneously passing massive tax breaks, to a wildly unqualified FEMA director who didn’t know hurricane seasons was a thing, to DHS Secretary Kristi Noem defunding the agency to the point where distress calls were ignored and rescue crews were missing in action. It’s also a failure on voters, who in 2021 rejected $10 million from the federal government for climate projects because the money came from…. BIDEN!!!!! When it’s all said and done, what is killing people is a right-wing ideology that doesn’t believe in climate change despite it playing out before our eyes, and that is hell-bent on rugged individualism and low taxes no matter what the costs. So when do we stop playing the blame game and start holding people accountable by booting them from power?
