Well, our performances went great at FanX the Comic convention in Salt Lake City. The Cthulhu reading in particular packed the room, and people were turned away. We gave out a hundred "Cthulhu Comforters", which were little rubber fidget toys shaped like an octopus that kind of popped. I told everyone I gave one out to that it was a scary story, so if they need it, they can fidget with the Cthulhu to help the calm down. When the story got intense at the end, I heard people popping their toys in the audience. It was really, really fun.
And now for something completely different.
Thurnley Abbey was originally released in McClure's magazine in October 1908. It is the most famous piece of fiction by Perceval Landon, who was a journalist by profession. However, though it is a "one off", it's considered one of the most terrifying stories by ghost story buffs. I hope you like it.

Today's episode features an author I've wanted to do since I started this show nearly 20 years ago. I just couldn't figure out how to work Aesop into the lineup. There are so many different translations and editions, I simply never found the right one.
Then, as I was researching Somerset Maugham, I ran across a reference to the title of one of his books, Cakes and Ale. Maugham's Cakes and Ale is a novel exposing the wrongs of societal snobbery. Maugham lifted his title from Shakespeare's Twelfth Night, it seems. Maugham's novel may have its title inspired from Joseph Jacob's edition of Aesop's Fables, as the moral of the story of the Town Mouse and the Country Mouse is: Better Beans and Bacon in peace than Cakes and Ale in fear. Something about that just struck a chord with me. I found the Jacob edition of the fables, and they are fantastic, as you will soon hear.
I had toyed around many times with adding one or two to the beginning and end of a show, but I didn't think that would give them the attention due to them. Which brings us to today's episode, where we dive in and hear 22 of Aesop's Fables, one after another.
As you listen, you might want to check in on how you're feeling. If you're like me, at first I was a little resistive – these feel like kids stories at first. Peter Pan advice, right? Keep listening. See how you feel by the end of the episode. You may realize you want to start it over.

If you had to look up the word mezzotint like I did, here's what you'd find at Merriam-Webster:
1: a manner of engraving on copper or steel by scraping or burnishing a roughened surface to produce light and shade
2: an engraving produced by mezzotint
Today's story has been anthologized and dramatized many times. It felt like an old Twilight Zone episode to me. I hope you like it.

And once again, we're touching on some racism in this week's episode. As well as some casual drug use. Probably why this story isn't as well known. Just wanted to give you a heads up.

Also, today we have an instance of an author using racism as a cheap device to create a villain. Yeah, it's pretty gross. For the record, any time you say, "everyone who looks like this, or comes from here, or thinks like this – they're all the same", yeah, that's a problem. Unfortunately, many Victorian authors use this and various forms of racism as a cheap shortcut. Just wanted to give you a heads up.

Okay, so we have a little housekeeping to attend to. First of all, if you'd like to see a live recording of Jeeves and the Dog MacIntosh, by P.G. Wodehouse, you can. I'll be performing The Classic Tales Podcast live at the FanX Convention (formerly Salt Lake ComicCon). I'll also be one of four narrators performing The Call of Cthulhu live, as well as Asleep in Armageddon, by Ray Bradbury. So if you're in the area, and are planning on attending, please come and say hi.
There's also a super fun interview I had with Heather Ordover from CraftLit, the annotated audiobook podcast, that you can check out. Her podcast turns 20 this year, and since many of her listeners have heard my work, since she's used some of my recordings in her show, she was gracious enough to have a chat with me. If you wonder why I do this, or what my story is, it's a great snapshot of lil' ol' me. A link to the interview can be found in the show notes.

It's a tricky thing doing a show every week, no matter what life throws in your way. I mentioned how I'm the only one here, and that's how it is – week after week. Good days, bad days, doesn't matter – gotta put out a top notch show every week. So if you're looking for a way to support the actual creative artists who make the stuff you enjoy, this is really a great place to support.
And by supporting in a way that qualifies for the Audiobook Library Card, you get so much bang for your buck. As in, unlimited everything.

If you know someone who's shy about reading the classics, Robert Louis Stevenson is a great introduction. Treasure Island, Kidnapped, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and his wonderful short stories like Markheim, The Body Snatcher, and The Bottle Imp to name a few. Today we begin an episodic journey through the novel Catriona, published as David Balfour in the US. Though the name looks to be spelled Catriona, apparently it's correctly pronounced as Katrina. So that's what we'll do.
This second volume of David Balfour's story is less a straightforward adventure story, and is more of a novel of manners with some adventure sprinkled in. To me it feels like a natural progression as the youth gets older, has more responsibility, and learns to make his way in the wider world of Scottish traditions.

I hope you're enjoying this refresher in Kidnapped. I've had so much fun revisiting this story. My favorite film adaptation is the Disney version with Peter Finch as Alan Breck Stuart, and features a young Peter O'Toole. That mixture of that sort of classic film acting and production combined with a classic story is uniquely satisfying to me.
I hope you enjoy another healthy helping of David's adventures.

As you may know, I like to do a spot of adventure over the summer. This summer, I thought of something a little different. Robert Louis Stevenson, my gateway drug to the classics, wrote a sequel to Kidnapped that is quite good, but not as well known. I've been wanting to do it for some time, but the time didn't seem right. This summer I think we'll give it a go.
So that you all can refresh yourselves on David Balfour's story, I'm planning a few more robust vintage episodes during the next few weeks, where we'll hear the entire novel of Kidnapped in three episodes.
Now, here's the thing – this is like, one of the first audiobooks I've ever recorded. So while it still gets a fair rating on Audible, you'll hear that I'm still getting my sea legs. Kidnapped has never appeared on The Classic Tales Podcast and has only been available in our retail outlets.
And if you've never heard it before, you're in for a real treat. Warts and all.

I sent out a newsletter this week with links to our new products, a note on other stuff we've got coming down the pike, and a link to a hidden gem in the library. If you missed it, check your inboxes. I try to keep it short, sweet, and convenient.
For years, I listened to David Copperfield, by Charles Dickens every year. There was just something nourishing when I revisited that story. There still is. The characters, the themes, the masterful language, it was a literary feast – and I always picked up something new. I don't know how you are, but sometimes I'm not at a place where I can handle a book. It just doesn't work for some reason. Then, a year or two later maybe, the same book absolutely hits the spot.

Today's story established the format for the short story "In a Grove", by Ryūnosuke Akutagawa, the father of the Japanese short story. "In a Grove" influenced the great Akira Kurosawa to create the film Rashomon. The concept being that two witnesses can give widely different accounts of the same factual event.
It may also serve as William James's thesis that "it is not so much the truth of events that matters, but how they are perceived, and the difference that they make to the perceiver". I hope you like it.

SLANG, n. The grunt of the human hog (Pignoramus intolerabilis) with an audible memory. Rudyard Kipling walks us down the tragic path of the loss of a loved one, today on The Classic Tales Podcast.
Welcome to this VINTAGE episode of The Classic Tales Podcast, where we use an audiobook format to give you an immersive experience in classic literature. You can get friendlier with the classics you know, and discover new favorites. I'm your host BJ Harrison. I'm a professional audiobook narrator, and I'm glad you could join us.
I don't know how you are, but when I'm finishing up a book, I'm always wondering what to listen to next. Will the automated suggestions do it for me? Does the algorithm really understand what I like?
With the Audiobook Library Card, you gain access to everything I've personally curated from the public domain and recorded over the past 18 years. Every title was purposely chosen because it was calling to me for some reason. I needed to record it. I got a recent comment on YouTube, saying that they could tell that I love every story I record, and it shows. Well, I do. I'm passionate about the classics. And I'm glad it shows.
Subscribe for the Audiobook Library Card for 9.99 a month, and get access to it all. There's no better way to get friendly with the classics.

Before we dive into today's story, I want to start a new little feature called the Word for the Week. Each week, we'll have a definition from the Devil's Lexicographer himself – Ambrose Bierce. Over the course of 30 years, Bierce nearly weekly wrote a cynical definition of a common word, sometimes consisting of poems, which he sold to various newspapers and periodicals. After 30 years, he collected all of these into one volume which came to be called The Devil's Dictionary. In keeping with the spirit of its creation, we'll hear one of his jocular definitions before we begin today's show.
So, the Word for the Week is Infancy, and here to read it is Ambrose Bierce himself:
INFANCY, n. The period of our lives when, according to Wordsworth, "Heaven lies about us." The world begins lying about us pretty soon afterward.
Thank you Mr. Bierce.

My content appears mass-produced or repetitive to increase views without adding any educational or other value."

Let's talk about ads. Now, most podcasts offer a subscription where you can pay $10 or so a month, and you get to listen to their show with no ads, and get a few bonus episodes. Here's the thing – this largely goes to benefit the podcast platforms. The actual creators don't get much.
So, I created a better plan. For $9.99 per month, you get unlimited downloadable and streamable access to the entire Classic Tales Library. I've been building this for 18 years. This gives you access to longer books that wouldn't work in the podcast format. Books like Nicholas Nickleby, Moby Dick, or The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Only about a quarter of the books in the library were released through the podcast. So you can instantly download and listen to whatever you want, all the time. This is the Audiobook Library Card.

One of the things that I love about The Classic Tales is the way folks who normally don't listen to the classics get hooked. I don't know how many times I've heard stories of people who normally wouldn't read Jane Austen, but now love Pride and Prejudice. Or after a few episodes of Poirot, want to read more of Agatha Christie's books. Or Charles Dickens, or Sherlock Holmes, the list goes on and on.
If you've got a friend who might be like this, here's what you do – scroll back through our feed and find one of your favorite episodes. Maybe it's a Jeeves and Wooster episode, or a Lupin mystery, something where afterwards, you were like, man, that was a good story. There's a ton of them! Share that episode with a friend. Now you've got something to talk about next time you see them.
And if you're wanting to try it out yourself, subscribe to the Audiobook Library Card, and gain access to everything. All the novels, short stories and novellas over the last 18 years – I mean, try listening to The Scarlet Pimpernel and not be hungry for more fun. For 9.99 a month, you get access to it all. Tue, 06 Jan 2026 - 1h 27min - 773 - Ep. 1101, Michael Strogoff, Part 1 of 9, by Jules Verne
The Grand Duke's life is in danger, and the telegraph wire has been cut. Who can carry a dispatch from the Czar across revolutionary Siberia in time to warn him? Jules Verne, today on The Classic Tales Podcast.
Welcome to The Classic Tales Podcast. Thank you for listening.
Books like Nicholas Nickleby, Moby Dick, or Plutarch's Lives. Only about a quarter of the books in the library were released through the podcast. So you can instantly download and listen to whatever you want, all the time. This is the Audiobook Library Card.
Go to audiobooklibrarycard.com or follow the link in the show notes, and download and listen all you want.
Today's story is the first in an episodic release of the novel Michael Strogoff, by Jules Verne. I don't know about you, but my favorite Jules Verne novel might be Around the World in 80 Days. Michael Strogoff is similarly commissioned with a race against time, but the story is placed in Czarist Russia, and is essentially a spy novel. This first episode is kind of a lot to set up, but once we get going – hold on tight!

I'm performing as Ebenezer Scrooge at Payson Community Theatre's production of Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol right now. Fun fact – Austin Bateman, the actor in the show who plays Young Scrooge, is a fan of the podcast. He's done a great job interpreting how a younger BJ Harrison would sound as Scrooge. My son Seven picked up on what he was doing and complimented him on it. It's a great show. If you're in the area, there are three more performances.
Today's VINTAGE episode was recorded in 2018, when my son was Scrooge in high school. I thought it was time to revisit the story. There's a reason it's a classic!

As a side note, I'm going to be playing Ebenezer Scrooge in Payson Community Theatre's production of Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol. To celebrate, our VINTAGE episodes for December will be the original text of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol, which I recorded in 2018, when my son Seven was playing Scrooge in High School. I guess we've come full circle.
Today's story appeared in a collection of Christmas stories by French and Spanish writers, translated by Antoinette Ogden. It's a sweet story with some beautiful imagery. By the way, a sabotier is a maker of wooden shoes, or clogs. Enjoy!
