- 518 - When In Doubt, Zoom Out
A few days ago, I made a terrible mistake.
I woke up, grabbed my phone, and started scrolling X while making my coffee.
In the span of about two minutes, my brain got hit with doomsday predictions, geopolitical tensions, horrific news, and warnings about AI destroying jobs.
Before I had even taken my first sip of coffee, I was in fight-or-flight mode.
It's easy to feel that we're living in the most uncertain time in history. But the uncertainty itself is ancient. Its grip on our lives is new.
You are plugged into a 24/7 uncertainty machine. An IV drip straight into your veins.
The truth is you can't stop the machine. So the goal isn't to avoid or eliminate uncertainty, as much as to outlast it.
In this piece, I talk about the single mantra I keep coming back to:
When in doubt, zoom out.
Everything in life benefits from perspective. The struggle feels smaller. The growth feels bigger.
Because the days are noisy, but the months, years, and decades are not.
When in doubt, zoom out.

In 2021, I left my traditional career track in finance to go all in on writing and creative work.
I assumed that more time inputs would mean more, and better, outputs.
I was wrong.
The writing, once a highlight of my day, had taken on the feel of a job. The passion had become work.
As it turns out, there's real science that helps explain why. It's called the Overjustification Effect: When an expected external incentive decreases a person's intrinsic motivation to engage in an activity they already enjoy.
In this piece, I wrote about how I learned to protect the things I love from the weight of expectations and why I think you need to become a beginner again.
It's a small rebellion in a world that wants you to do everything with some purpose in mind.
You don't have to get good at every single thing you do. You don't need to attach metrics to every pursuit. Not everything has to become something.
Some things can just be.

I'm often asked for advice from people just starting out in life.
When I respond, I imagine I'm speaking to my 22-year-old self. Young. Energetic. Highly ambitious. But with little direction. Feeling lost.
There are a handful of things I find myself consistently repeating in these responses, so I thought it would be worthwhile to collect them into a single piece.
But to be clear, in writing (and re-reading it), it's obvious to me that this advice applies to all of us. At any age. On any life path.
So, strap in and buckle up.
Here's my brutally honest advice to my 22-year-old self...

In an apocryphal story, legendary painter Pablo Picasso was walking through the market when a woman approached him and asked for a drawing.
Picasso quickly drew a small, but beautiful piece of art and handed it back to her.
"That'll be one million dollars," he smiled.
"But Mr. Picasso, it only took you thirty seconds!"
"On the contrary," he replied. "It took me thirty years to draw that masterpiece in thirty seconds."
This story is a perfect example of a modern crisis I'm starting to see in the AI era.
It's called the Locksmith Paradox: We have a tendency to undervalue something because of the low visible input required to create it, despite the output being exactly what we requested.
In this piece, I talk about the science behind this phenomenon, why it penalizes efficiency and rewards general incompetence, and how to fight back as individuals, leaders, and organizations...

A six week stretch of travel had already reduced my output. Then, I got caught in an earthquake in Panama. And finally, upon returning home on little sleep, I was laid out by a bug my son brought home from school.
This weekend, as I started to think about the week ahead, I noticed a familiar, building sensation. A clenching tension in my jaw and neck. A heavy drop in my shoulders. An elevated heart rate.
It got me thinking about how to find your way out of the land of overwhelm when the pile of work and life debt feels too heavy to even start on.
The body and the mind are intimately connected. Every random object is effectively an open loop. I build momentum on the small and then leverage that momentum to knock out the big.
In this piece, I talk about my five-step Overwhelm Protocol: move the body, clean your room, make a Weekly Win Card, create a snowball, and knock down a wall...

Last Wednesday, I flew to Panama to deliver two keynotes. I was excited for the trip. I’d been once before as a kid and remembered the beautiful country.
I completed the first talk on Thursday evening and the second on Friday morning. I left feeling energized and headed back to the hotel to take a few calls before heading to the airport. At 12:56pm local time, I was on the top floor of my hotel when I started to feel a light rumbling sensation in my chair.
But then, chaos. The floor started to shake. The entire building started to sway. Things started falling off the counters and onto the floor.
I would shortly find out that a 7.7 magnitude earthquake was underway. Over the next 30 hours as I tried to find my way home, there were 161 aftershocks, including several 6.0+ magnitude tremors.
In this piece, I share my stream-of-consciousness perspectives from going through a massive earthquake. How everything got smaller. How I was reminded that shared struggle builds bonds. Why awareness is so very perishable.
And why bad luck may not be so bad...

Confession: I’ve never been someone who was a natural in social settings.
As something of an introvert, I struggled to build new adult relationships. I often felt others weren’t responding to my social signals. In most cases, I just assumed they didn’t like me and moved on.
But it turns out I was actually falling victim to a damning collision of two psychological phenomena:
Signal Amplification Bias: Our fear of rejection in social situations tempers our ability to convey social signals, and blinds our ability to recognize that tempering effect. The Liking Gap: We assume others like us less than they actually do.In effect, you send less than you think, and you hear less than they send.
Two people who like each other leave an interaction convinced the other one doesn’t.
In this piece, I share a simple solution that has completely transformed my experience with adult friendships:
Like people out loud...

This episode brought to you by:Thu, 08 Oct 2026 - 511 - The Stories You Tell Yourself
When I was 13 years old, a single story changed the course of my life.
But to understand it, I need to take you back in time to a strange experiment from decades ago.
Neuroscientist Michael Gazzaniga was studying patients who had their corpus callosum surgically severed. His experiments led him to hypothesize that the left hemisphere has a specialized system he called The Interpreter, whose responsibility is to find clear cause and effect.
Its job is simple: To take scattered, seemingly random data and facts about the world in front of you and stitch them into a coherent story that feels true.
The problem is that we’d rather have a story that’s wrong than no story at all.
For me, The Interpreter began telling a story when I was young: I wasn’t very smart. My sister was the smart one. I had to be something else.
And then, confirmation bias kicked in. The story determined what “counted” as evidence. Eventually, the story itself constrained my world.
In this piece, I talk about the stories we tell ourselves and the empowering truth that allowed me to confront my own:
You wrote the stories. Which means you can rewrite them.
The most important story in life is the one you tell yourself.
Make sure it’s true.

This episode brought to you by:Tue, 06 Oct 2026 - 510 - My 90 -10 Rule for Routines
Confession: I'm a routine guy.
I thrive on structure. I think of routines as a way to ensure execution against the daily action that contributes to long-term, compounding progress.
But there's a dark side to routines that nobody talks about.
When your routines become too rigid and complicated, they become a source of stress rather than strength. The routines meant to serve you can start to own you.
This is where my 90-10 Rule comes in:
90% disciplined compliance.
10% open flexibility.
90% of the time, I'm locked in with my structure, but 10% of the time, I give myself the space to let life happen freely.
In this piece, I talk about the Paradox of Routine: The best routine is the one you can break. The 10% is what enables the 90% to be so effective.
Your routine should serve your life, not own it.

This episode brought to you by:Thu, 01 Oct 2026 - 509 - The Middle Path to Happiness
In the 3rd century BCE, King Pyrrhus was preparing for an aggressive military campaign in Italy when a trusted advisor named Cineas asked him a simple question:
After conquering Italy, what would they do next? Then Sicily. Then Libya and Carthage. And then?
King Pyrrhus replied, "Then we will live a life of ease. Drink all day and have pleasant conversation with our friends."
Cineas paused and spoke: "But what's stopping us from doing that today?"
The story is one of the oldest documented cases of the Arrival Fallacy: the false assumption that reaching some achievement or goal will create durable feelings of satisfaction and contentment in our lives.
But life is rarely so black and white. Ambition isn't the mortal enemy. And presence isn't the perfect hero.
In this piece, I wrote about choosing the middle path. Rejecting the or and embracing the and.
Remember: You can conquer your Carthage if you want to. Just don't make the wine wait for it.

AI is quite clearly the biggest buzzword of the year.
But one thing I don't see anyone talking about is just how much AI is shifting how rewards are earned.
Things are changing so rapidly that the frontier of accurate prediction has been pulled closer and closer to the present.
In this new world, the rewards will be earned by those who are willing to be beginners over and over again. The value seems likely to accrue to those who can combine curiosity and a beginner's mindset with bias for action.
This means that learning has become a core meta-skill. Perhaps even THE core meta-skill.
On Friday, I wrote about the Protégé Effect: the psychological phenomenon where teaching, preparing to teach, or pretending to teach information to someone else helps you learn and retain that information better yourself.
The new world will place an emphasis on adaptation. Rapid iteration. Learning and unlearning.
It sounds scary. It shouldn't.
If you're willing to be a beginner again, the future is brighter than ever...•••

In 1865, English economist William Stanley Jevons studied the impact of the increased efficiency of coal use.
The common economic intuition said that as efficiency improved, people would use less coal. Jevons argued that the economic reality was different: As technology improved the efficiency of coal use, demand for coal would increase as people created and justified new uses.
It became known as Jevons Paradox: technological improvements that increase the efficiency of a given resource lead to a rise in the consumption of that resource.
I think the most interesting application of Jevons Paradox is in your life.
When you optimize for efficiency, you may find yourself doing more, not less, of the thing you tried to become more efficient at.
In this piece, I share a simple reminder:
Efficiency is great. But only when it gets you more of what you actually want...

Last Sunday, I was scheduled to run a marathon with a goal of completing the race in 2:49:59.
I trained all summer for the race, building up to 70+ mile weeks. I tapered. I carb loaded. I meticulously prepared for every detail.
And honestly, I was certain I’d do it.
But…I failed.
After 21.45 miles at a 6:24 average pace, I stopped and walked off the course. I didn’t finish. DNF.
That’s not something you read in newsletters or see on social media every day. It’s all about wins. Successes. Achievements.
On Wednesday, I wrote about why failure is a good thing. It means you had the courage to go all-in. To try. To do something. To step into the arena.
You may not always get it done. But you’ll win at life along the way...

The engineer took out an axe and slammed it into the brick wall.
It was June 1896. The young man had spent months working in a small brick shed behind his rented house, only to realize, at 4am, that the door wasn't big enough for what he'd built.
His name was Henry Ford. His creation, the Ford Quadricycle.
His atomic insight was simple: He began viewing the factory itself as the product.
While others obsessed over the car, he obsessed over the factory. By the early 1920s, Ford owned an extraordinary 60% of the U.S. automobile market.
But around 1921, the ground began to shift. And while Ford was destroying new prototypes and rejecting changes, Alfred Sloan was building General Motors with adaptation as its core principle.
Sloan had a different atomic insight: He began viewing the company itself as the product. Under Sloan's management, while Ford sputtered, GM's market share doubled, from around 10% at the start of the decade to around 20% by 1925.
The lesson isn't Don't be a Ford or Be a Sloan. Rather, it's Be a Ford, then a Sloan.
In this piece, I explored why the skill set that gets you to your first million isn't the same as the one that gets you from one to ten. And why, above all, adaptability is the key to life...

Last weekend, my family and I made our annual pilgrimage to a small community in northwest Connecticut.
When I was 18 months old, my parents had rented a house there for the summer, seeking an escape from the New York City heat.
The next year, we went back. The following, we went again.
Soon, the tiny enclave became like a second home. I met my two best friends there. I caught my first fish there. I had my first crush there.
But perhaps most importantly, I played my first game of catch there.
As I remember it, I was probably about five years old. My dad had a softball and a couple of old baseball gloves. And there, in the tall, overgrown grass, we threw the ball back and forth.
We played catch damn near every single day when I was a kid.
But then, as I got older, my baseball career ended. And with it, our game of catch.
Time goes unnoticed, until it's the only thing you notice.
In this piece, I shared what happened last Sunday when I unlocked one of the old cabinets, pulled out two gloves, and asked my dad if he wanted to have a catch...
It was just a game of catch. But it was so much more...

I first met Tim Cook in 2014.
I was just starting my career in finance and had signed up for a local gym that opened at 5:00am. I started arriving at 4:45am so I could get to the office by 6:30.
Each morning, there was a small handful of others who would congregate outside the doors at that time. Tim happened to be one of the people in that group.
For the first six months, I talked to him almost every day and had exactly zero idea who he was.
As our friendship grew and I came to consider him a mentor, I realized something deeper was going on. A few years later, he was still there. Doing the exact same thing. Every single day.
He became the best example I've seen of an old Zen saying:
What do you do before enlightenment? Chop wood, carry water. What do you do after enlightenment? Chop wood, carry water.
In this piece, I talk about the lesson I learned from seeing it up close: The outcomes may change. The titles may change. The scale may change. But the work doesn't...

Imagine two different people on the same mid-January day.
One lives in California. He walks outside in shorts and a t-shirt. The warm sun beams down on his face. He puts on his sunglasses, unlocks his car, and turns the AC on full blast.
One lives in New York. He walks outside in a heavy jacket. He grimaces as the cold wind hits his uncovered face. He opens the trunk of his car, takes out a brush, and starts cleaning the snow and ice off his windshield.
Which one do you assume is happier?
You just picked one in your mind. And I probably would have picked the same. Right up until I lived both.
Yes, the truth is, the two people are both me, just one year apart.
And our assumptions about their relative happiness reveal an important cognitive trap everyone needs to understand.
It's called the focusing illusion.
A cognitive bias where people overemphasize the importance of a specific, visible factor when estimating the overall happiness of an individual or group.

It got me thinking about the obsessive pursuit of convenience and the hidden debt it creates in your life.
Money has the ability to reduce the simple stresses, burdens, and inconveniences of adult life. But there's a certain level of inconvenience that's an important part of the human experience.
When you seek convenience, you get a benefit now in the form of ease, but it creates a corresponding liability in the form of reality separation.

A fancy robe nearly destroyed a philosopher's life.
In 1765, Denis Diderot's financial means went from meager to extravagant. Soon thereafter, he came to own a fancy scarlet dressing robe.Diderot liked the status that the fancy robe conferred on him but quickly felt the remainder of his possessions could not compare.
So, in quick succession, he purchased a new leather chair. New shoes. An elaborate wooden desk.
All of which seemed appropriately matched to his lovely scarlet robe.
Or, perhaps more important, appropriately matched to the type of person who wore such a robe.
I call this phenomenon the Scarlet Robe Effect: A single status purchase can create a new identity. Each new purchase chases the identity that the last one created.
In today's piece, I explored the perils of bought status games and shared a simple question you can use to cut through the noise:
Would I buy this thing if I couldn't show or tell anyone about it?

The cab he worked in was at the back of the locomotive, behind a large boiler, which meant that he often had to lean out a side window to catch the signals coming up on the track ahead.
In the small, cramped cab, it was just Hori and his fireman, who was responsible for shoveling coal into the firebox while also keeping an eye on the signals.
Hori's worst fear was missing or misreading a trackside signal, an error that could lead to a catastrophic crash.
Worried that he could no longer trust his eyes, he began doing something odd...

That's what my friend, who I'll call Joe, said to me at dinner a few weeks ago. Joe is in his early-40s. He's had a good career on a steady rising track in the world of finance. He's married with two kids, ages 7 and 4. He lives in the suburbs outside New York and commutes into the city for work.
In many respects, I think of Joe as something of an archetype of the dream. Good job. Good family. Good life. So, naturally, his words caught me off guard...

"So, what's your 5-year plan?"
That was the question posed to me by a mentor in January 2021. At the time, I was about seven years into my career, on the "track" in finance.
Climbing slowly up the mountain, I had started to wonder if it was the wrong one. I just didn't seem to have the same energy for the work as most of my colleagues.
All of the future mountains I envisioned were (at most) one degree of separation from the mountain I'd been climbing. As I reflect back on that moment now, in July 2026, at the endpoint of that five year plan my mentor asked about, I have an interesting realization...

On January 27, 1986, just 16 hours before the Space Shuttle Challenger was set to launch, an engineer named Roger Boisjoly presented data showing a catastrophic risk with the shuttle's O-rings in cold temperatures.
His warnings were overruled. The next morning, 73 seconds into its flight, the Challenger exploded, killing all seven crew aboard.
Sociologist Diane Vaughn coined the term Normalization of Deviance to describe what had happened—not a single moment of negligence, but a slow, systemic drift where unacceptable practices became accepted because they were repeated without immediate consequences.
In this episode, I explored how this concept applies directly to our lives. The minor repair you ignore. The hard conversation you avoid. The missed workout when you don't feel motivated. No explosion. No catastrophic failure. So you convince yourself they're fine.
But each day, with each tiny slip, you reset your own standard to a new, slightly lower baseline...

I’m increasingly convinced that the willingness to change your mind is the ultimate sign of intelligence.
The most impressive people I know change their minds often in response to new information or evidence. It's not that they lack conviction in their beliefs, but more so that they've developed enough self-awareness to understand what it would take to change them.
The world will pressure you to stubbornly resist such change. To cling to every belief as though it might be your last. But there's immense power in resisting that pressure.
I like to think of it as a software update. The update is never perfect, but it's an improvement upon the older version. It's a reminder that the goal isn't to be right, but to slowly, consistently get closer to the truth.
When I'm getting to know people, I often ask them what they've changed their mind on recently. It's an interesting way to go deep in a conversation.
A friend recently flipped the question on me.
After a bunch of thought and reflection, here's my reply:
7 things I've changed my mind on recently...

Last week, I wrote a piece about reinvention. Specifically, the myth of too late and how to reinvent your life at any age or life stage.
It clearly struck a chord.
I received thousands of replies in the days following the piece. One reader reply referenced a two-decade-old newspaper advice column segment that had resonated on the subject.
Me being me, I decided to try to find the column. After all, if something was still etched into my reader's memory 20+ years later, it must have been good.
I did, and it was even better than advertised...

There’s an old children’s fable I recently retold to my son about a farmer whose wagon wheel gets stuck in the mud.
He calls on Hercules to come to his aid. Hercules appears, but rather than lifting the wagon, he speaks: "Do you think you can move the wagon by simply looking at it? Put your shoulder to the wheel."
The farmer did so, and the wagon lurched forward as the wheel easily came unstuck.
The simple read says this is a story about effort. But it’s also a story that frames one of the most important traits in life:
It’s what I callActive Optimism: A belief that things will work out paired with a willingness to do the work to make it true.
The key distinction: Passive optimism is just belief. Active optimism is belief that begets action.
A question worth sitting with:
Where in your life are you waiting for Hercules instead of putting your shoulder to the wheel?

There’s a beautiful Zen parable that goes something like this:
A man is walking across a field when a tiger leaps out from the trees and runs toward him.
Fearing for his life, the man sprints away but quickly halts at a steep cliff. Facing a terrifying drop, with the tiger bearing down on him, he grabs hold of a single vine and lowers himself over the cliff’s edge.
Looking up, he sees the tiger above. Looking down, he notices another tiger pacing on the ground below. And to make matters worse, a small mouse begins gnawing at the vine that holds him in place.
Beginning to feel hopeless, with certain demise above and below, the man sees a single wild strawberry growing on the cliffside in front of him.
He reaches out, plucks the fruit, and eats it. He smiles.
How incredibly sweet it tasted.
I just found myself rereading that parable at 30,000 feet.
Let me explain why...•••

My son just turned four. One of the things I love most about the age is the unbridled curiosity with which he explores the world.
He's deep in the classic "why" phase, taking me down explanatory rabbit holes that go long past my point of comfort.
But one of the most interesting prompts he asked recently was this one:
"Tell me all about zippers."
On any given day, zipper is replaced by some basic thing that we interact with. It might be tell me all about our car, or trees, or cooking pans, or the microwave.
I have a rule that I always engage with him on these little curiosity quests, even if they come at a bad time.
In doing so, I've realized something:
I know very little about how the most basic things around me actually work.I start confidently, but my ability to answer "tell me all about [X]" generally ends after a few seconds. I quickly reach the outer bounds of my understanding and am forced, hat in hand, to consult with the internet to go deeper.
As it turns out, there's real science behind this...

A few years ago, as part of the research for my first book, I asked a group of centenarians for the advice they'd most like to give to their younger selves.
One of them offered this piece of wisdom:
"The most damning lie you can tell is the lie you tell to yourself."
Those lies dilute your attention, pull you toward distractions, and cut into your confidence. They give you an easy out when the truth requires more painful accountability.
Those lies keep you from running at full power. Self-protection that becomes self-rejection.
In the years since that conversation, I've often found myself reflecting on the comment as a thought experiment for my own life:What are the lies I'm telling myself right now?
Through identifying those lies, I've slowly learned to stopped telling them.

In 2004, a Finnish-American photographer named Arno Minkkinen gave the commencement speech at the New England School of Photography.
In the speech, he offered a powerful thought experiment:
Imagine for a moment that you find yourself at the large bus station in the center of Helsinki.
There are two dozen platforms at the station, each with several different bus lines departing from them bound for a wide array of destinations outside the city.
Each of the different bus lines departing from a given platform follows the same route for a few miles to get out of the city.
Minkkinen likened this experience to the early years of a career:
You pick your platform, which sets your general direction, and then select a bus line to hop on from the platform...

There’s an apocryphal story from that tour that I first came across while reading the transcript of Charlie Munger’s 2007 commencement speech at USC Law School.
Max Planck’s chauffeur, after having heard Planck practice and deliver the talk so many times, had the entire thing memorized.
He jokingly asked Planck if he could deliver it at the final lecture.
Surprisingly, the physicist agreed...

And, when I arrived at my local high school track last Friday at 4:45am, that was exactly what I planned to do.
I wish I had a thoughtful answer to the obvious "um, why?" this opener no doubt sparks in your mind.
The truth is that every now and then, I like to remind myself that I've still got that edge—that "dog" inside me. That I can take on something intimidating and get it done.
Plus, I talk a lot about discipline, grit, and consistency around here. But my rule is that you can’t talk about it if you’re not going to be about it.
If there's one thing you can always trust with me, it's this: If I say something, I’ve got receipts to prove that I live by it.

"Just be consistent."
By now, you've undoubtedly heard this advice countless times. So much so that it may even induce an eye roll or sigh.
Yes, it’s true, consistency is the difference maker. The common thread behind every major success story.
Everyone tells you to be consistent, but no one ever tells you how to be consistent.
And let’s be honest, it’s (much) easier said than done. Life gets chaotic. Motivation fades. Discipline wavers. Consistency breaks.
I've personally spent thousands of hours wrestling with this exact problem—and I've developed my own ultra-simple approach that works:

After creating the two prints, they were told to select one that they would get to keep, while the other would be filed in the department archives.
The first group was told that the decision was final. Whichever print they selected was their print and they couldn’t change their mind. The second group was told that the decision was reversible. They could change their mind and swap prints in the next few days.
But at this stage, the students were split into two groups:In the days that followed, the two groups of students were asked how satisfied they were with their selection, both during the swap window and after it had passed.
The findings were counterintuitive...

A few weeks ago, I had the unique opportunity to attend a small author’s retreat hosted by Atomic Habits author James Clear.
To be honest, it was a bit of a ”pinch-me” moment.
I was in a room with a group of 15 authors I’ve long admired, who had collectively sold tens of millions of books and left an indelible mark on the world with their ideas and insights.
We were each asked to share something that had been working for us, and once I shook off the feeling of imposter syndrome, the thing I decided to share was my framework on opportunity selection.
It sparked a deep dialogue and clearly resonated with the group—so I want to share it with all of you today...

A few weeks ago, I shared a piece on my Anti-To-Do List and the general merits of using inversion to improve your life.
The idea was straightforward:- Write down what you want to avoid doing.Avoid doing those things.
I've gotten a lot of value from using inversion like this as a tool to provide clarity on my actions and avoid painful mistakes.
As the late Charlie Munger famously said, "All I want to know is where I'm going to die, so I'll never go there."

For the last decade, I've had a recurring nightmare that I can trace back to my days as a Division 1 baseball player at Stanford...
I'm on the mound in a critical situation. All eyes are on me. The entire stadium waits for my pitch.
But as I start my motion, I realize I've completely forgotten how to throw the ball. My body moves like it's stuck in mud. Completely paralyzed.
Inevitably, I wake up in a cold sweat—thankful that it was just a dream.
While specific to my prior endeavors, as it turns out, this type of dream is a rather common one.
In fact, I'd be willing to bet that most of you have experienced some variation of it in the last few months.
All eyes on you in a big moment. And suddenly, you're completely paralyzed. Unable to perform.
It's the byproduct of a very common (and damning!) psychological phenomenon—one that has a tangible impact on the way we show up in every area of life.
It's called The Spotlight Effect...

That year, while traveling in Cannes, France, Nobel's brother, Ludvig, suddenly died of a heart attack.
A French newspaper misreported the incident, penning an article that claimed Nobel himself had died. Reading the false reports of his own death, Alfred Nobel was shocked at what the world clearly thought of him.He got something almost nobody gets: A clear preview of his destined future while he still had time to change it.

In the mid-19th century, a physician named Dr. Ignaz Semmelweis was working as an assistant in Vienna General Hospital when he noticed something curious.
The hospital had two maternity clinics right next to each other, one staffed by doctors and medical students, the other by midwives.
The mortality rate of mothers at the clinic staffed by doctors and medical students was a shocking (even for the era) 18%, while it was just 2% at the clinic staffed by midwives.
It occurred to Semmelweis that the doctors and medical students were often moving straight from working on cadavers to delivering babies.Without washing their hands in between.
He mandated handwashing, and the rate immediately dropped to below 2%.
Rather than being hailed as a hero, he was ridiculed. Doctors rejected the evidence because it contradicted their deeply-entrenched beliefs. On Friday, I explored why smart, accomplished people reject the very evidence that could help them—and the antidote: what I call the Empty Cup Mindset.
Ask yourself: What new evidence would cause me to change my mind?
If the answer is nothing, your cup is too full...

Last week, I got an email from a reader that stopped me in my tracks:
Dear Mr. Bloom,My name is Parker and I am 17. I am reaching out because I would like some advice.
I have had a goal and dream since I can remember, being rich and owning some sort of business but I do not know where to start. I don't want to be rich for the wrong reasons. I want to use my money as freedom for myself and to use it as a way to help others. My goal is to make 1 million by the time I am 20.
I was wondering if I could have some mentorship on how I could achieve this goal. I come from a poor family so money is hard for us but I will do whatever it takes to achieve this no matter what.
I hope this finds you well, thank you for your time.
So, I sat down for a day to properly answer his question:
What would I tell him? What advice would I give? What tactical playbook would I provide?
This is my open letter to Parker—and to anyone out there with big dreams and no idea where to start...

The Think Week (or Day) is a ritual that will change your life.
The concept was first popularized by several world-renowned entrepreneurs and innovators in the 1980s and 1990s, but its underlying foundation has been around for thousands of years.
History’s greatest leaders, thinkers, and builders have all believed in the power of space to create asymmetric outcomes. It allows you to slow down, zoom out, change perspective, and invest energy into the moments and opportunities that really matter.
Unfortunately, the importance of space has been forgotten in a modern world where busyness is the standard. And without space, you get stuck. Trapped in a fixed loop of inputs and outputs, the 1-to-1 trades that keep you on the life treadmill. You become
a rocking horse, always moving, but never getting anywhere.

“The first rule of a happy life is low expectations. If you have unrealistic expectations you’re going to be miserable your whole life.”
Perhaps his wisest insight of all came when he was asked to reflect on the source of his own happiness:His words echo an old aphorism, which says that low expectations are the key to life.
“Actual circumstances don’t make much difference…What generates all the emotion is just how big the gap is between expectations and reality…Everyone, everywhere, doing almost any task, is just in pursuit of finding some space between expectations and reality.”
My friend Morgan Housel once wrote:So, by definition, if you keep your expectations perpetually very low, you’ll always be happy.
Right? The science does seem to support this general idea...

Steve Jobs once described the difference between good work and great work with a simple image:
“When you’re a carpenter making a beautiful chest of drawers, you’re not going to use a piece of plywood on the back, even though it faces the wall and nobody will ever see it. You’ll know it’s there, so you’re going to use a beautiful piece of wood on the back. For you to sleep well at night, the aesthetic, the quality, has to be carried all the way through.”That idea has always stuck with me. It captures something deeply unintuitive about how exceptional quality is created.
We tend to assume that effort and results go hand in hand. That more energy input reliably produces higher quality output. That the relationship between energy and output quality is linear, stable, and fixed.
But here’s the truth: It isn’t...•••

In 2015, tennis legend Novak Djokovic was asked about the drivers of his exceptional on-court success.
His response was simple:
"I can carry on playing at this level because I like hitting the tennis ball."
When the interviewer pressed him, asking whether there were players who don't, he continued:
"There are people out there who don't have the right motivation. I can see it. But I don't judge."
That line unlocked something for me, I just didn't know it yet...•••

When I started this newsletter in 2021, I had one simple goal:
To share actionable ideas to help you build a high-performing, healthy, wealthy life.
I had no idea that just a few years later, that simple focus would extend to reach nearly 1 million readers around the world. To say I'm humbled by this is something of an understatement.
But I'm not surprised by it.Why? Well, I haven't missed a single send since I started it in May 2021. Two sends per week for all of 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024. Three sends per week (plus a Saturday week-in-review) for all of 2025.
That's nearly 600 newsletters—without a single miss. Not for a holiday. Not for an illness. Not for anything.
I want you to know that when I talk about consistency and the power of showing up, you can trust me, because I live by it.
But let me be clear: The only reason I can do it is because I love it. I love writing this newsletter for all of you. I love wrestling with the ideas. I love seeing the impact they have on your lives.
I shared hundreds of ideas with you this year. Here were my 25 favorites.
The best ideas of 2025...•••

There’s an old fable I love about a villager trying to catch a monkey.
He doesn’t use force. He doesn’t set a net. He doesn’t try to chase it.
Instead, he hooks a single coconut to the side of his house, drills a small hole in it, and places a few morsels of food inside.
That evening at dusk, the monkey quietly slips into the village. It sees the coconut, smells the food, and slips its open hand into the hole.
It feels the food and grabs hold of it excitedly. But when it tries to remove its hand, it can’t.
The hole is just wide enough for an open palm, but not a clenched fist.
The stubborn monkey refuses to let go of the food—and therefore, resigns itself to its own fate.
The villager’s clever trap has worked…•••

My wife and I celebrated our 9th wedding anniversary this week.
Two years ago, I started an annual tradition of asking couples who’ve been married 40, 50, or 60+ years for their best relationship advice.
The advice they wish they could give to their younger selves.
At this point, the advice captures over 1,000 years of earned wisdom from these beautiful relationships.
Today, I’d like to share that advice (plus a few additions of my own).
This is the relationship advice everyone needs to hear…•••

In 2021, as I was leaving a traditional career path to create my own, I asked a mentor for advice on the entrepreneurial journey ahead.
His response was simple:
Create things that you’d want to consume.

That is, until 18 months ago, when something clicked.
