Excerpt from My Letter to Dan Miller:
Honestly, Dan, my journey to launching a business would not have been possible without you! Kathy even says that the influence Joanne and you had on our family is unbelievable. I was in a tough spot knowing that I didn’t want to keep doing the work I was doing, yet I was also clueless about how to move into something I didn’t understand or even know what it would look like. Those were exciting, tough, scary days for me professionally. Even more, they were also exciting, tough, scary days for our marriage as we tried to figure things out together all while having three young kiddos at home.
All that to say, for the past 15 years I once again had a hero and mentor in my life. And please know, when I say “hero,” I don’t mean a hero as in a Caped Crusader who can do no wrong. The truth is that all three of my heroes have been very ordinary men who did extraordinary things because they possessed qualities like stick-to-it-tiveness, grit, determination, joy, and love for life. Just average, everyday guys who I look up to because if an ordinary guy like you can do extraordinary things, then perhaps an ordinary guy like me can do the same.
So from the depth of my heart and soul, please know I am FOREVER GRATEFUL for your mentorship and friendship. Your influence in my life and work is beyond measurable. No one has impacted me more than you.

But through my mistake, I learned just how much a special birthday letter I give to each of my children means to them (and to me).

Be consistent. To make the greatest impact, write a birthday letter every year. Make your birthday letters thematic. It’s easier to organize your thoughts when you use a theme. Let’s break down each phrase of Emerson’s statement to discover the exact ingredients in his recipe for success.
(1) Choose a career you love.
“Choose.” This is an intentional, proactive word. It communicates both decision and ownership. It puts 100 percent of the responsibility for finding work you love on your shoulders. “Love.” This word communicates passion, intensity, yearning, appreciation, and commitment.(2) Give it the best there is in you.
“Give.” Serve instead of taking. Overdeliver. Add value. A key ingredient in the recipe for success is to be altruistic, not self-serving. “Best.” Don’t check out and whine; show up and shine! Remember, average never impacts and normal people don’t make history. “In You.” The ingredients for your success are inside of you, and they can only come out of you when you embrace your best self.(3) Seize your opportunities.
“Seize.” This is another intentional, proactive word, and it’s even more powerful than “choose.” It communicates that you catch, grab, and aggressively take hold of something. “Opportunities.” Have you ever considered the problems you face are actually opportunities looking for solutions?(4) Be a member of a team.
“Be.” This is an active word, even though on the surface, it might appear passive. Your doing is shaped by your being, so in order to “do” anything of significance on a consistent basis, you have to actively invest time and energy into personal development. “Member.” Again, on the surface, this word does not seem to be an active word either, but it’s very active. You have to step forward to become a member. “Team." The teams you choose in life and business shape you tremendously. As Jim Rohn said, “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.”Call to Action
Did you notice the first word of every ingredient in Emerson’s recipe for success requires action?
Choose. Give. Seize. Be.Bottom line, if you want an entree of success in your life and business, you must actively mix the four ingredients in this recipe of success — choose work you love, give your best, seize opportunities, and be a team member.

Three events occurred this week that made me think about the importance of having healthy family relationships as we move from DREAM to DO in our business or career:
1) My three children went back to college after being home for a month during Christmas and New Year’s break.
2) Matt Woodrum asked a great question in his Wrestling with Fatherhood Facebook group (https://www.facebook.com/groups/wrestlingwithfatherhood/ ): What is your biggest family goal for the new year and why?
3) I had a conversation with Jake, a young man who has the opportunity to pursue a career as a speaker. One of his concerns was if travel would negatively impact his family.
These three events made me think deeply about one of the things I am proudest about in my business, and something that I hope I can help the next generation of business leaders experience as well.

Can a disadvantage become an advantage? Is there a way to turn your greatest adversity into your greatest advantage? According to the Compensation Theory, the answer is YES!
What is the Compensation Theory? It's the idea that a disadvantage in life can actually become a significant advantage for you if you learn how to compensate for it. In the book David and Goliath, Malcolm Gladwell refers to the Compensation Theory by using phrases like "the advantages of disadvantages" and "the theory of desirable difficulty." He frames challenges like dyslexia as difficulties, but when people learn to compensate and work around their dyslexia, they find that their difficulty has actually led to a massive opportunity. It's E+R=O (events + RESPONSE = outcome) at it's best!
