Wed, 28 Oct 2026 - 57min - 359 - 244: Why Pregnancy & Postpartum Coaching Matters: The Story Behind P&PA
In this solo episode, I'm sharing the story behind the Pregnancy & Postpartum Athleticism Coaching Certification, why specialized coaching matters, and how this education can create meaningful opportunities for coaches and the women they support.
I didn't set out to create a certification program. I simply saw a gap in the fitness industry: coaches needed better education to confidently support women through pregnancy and postpartum.
What started with small group coaching for moms eventually grew into Pregnancy & Postpartum Athleticism and the P&PA Coaching Certification. Over the years, the certification has evolved alongside research, coaching practices, and the needs of athletes.

Wed, 07 Oct 2026 - 43min - 358 - 243: Understanding the History of Pregnancy, Postpartum & Athleticism with Dr. Carrie Pagliano, PT
This episode is a little different because Dr. Carrie Pagliano and I are bringing our two podcasts together for one conversation about the history of pregnancy, postpartum, fitness, and women's athleticism.
We've both been working in this space for more than a decade, but we come from different professional worlds; Carrie from the physical therapy and clinical side, and me from the coaching, strength and conditioning, and athlete side. We wanted to look back at where we've been, what has changed, and what we're still seeing repeat itself today.
We talk about how dramatically the fitness landscape has changed for women, the evolution of pregnancy and postpartum exercise messaging, and the tension between the medical and fitness worlds. We also reflect on the early days of social media, the pressure to have a "fit pregnancy" and quickly "bounce back" postpartum, and how some of those narratives have continued to show up in different forms.
We also talk about research, collaboration across professions, individual differences, identity, and what it means to support women as athletes across the lifespan. Ultimately, this conversation is about continuing to challenge rigid thinking, learning from what we've experienced, and joining forces to keep moving the conversation forward.

Wed, 30 Sep 2026 - 1h 14min - 357 - 242: The Power of Adaptability: Alena Alsruhe on Pregnancy and Postpartum in Your 40s
In this insightful episode, I sit down with Alena Alsruhe to talk about her experience navigating pregnancy and postpartum in her 40s and the mindset shifts that came with becoming a mother later in life. Alena shares how she approached pregnancy and postpartum with curiosity, intentionality, and a willingness to learn. We talk about adapting training and physical activity, navigating the mental and emotional changes of motherhood, and why being proactive about your health can make such a difference.
We also explore the importance of community, mindfulness, and faith during seasons of change. Alena's story is a powerful reminder that we don't have to have everything figured out before we begin. Sometimes, the ability to adapt, stay open, and keep learning is what allows us to move through challenging seasons with more confidence and grace.
Whether you're navigating pregnancy, postpartum, motherhood, or simply a major transition in life, I hope this conversation reminds you that change doesn't mean losing yourself—it can be an opportunity to discover a new version of who you are.

In this episode, I'm sharing one of my most personal stories: my journey through pregnancy, birth, and the lessons that have shaped me as both a mother and a coach.
I reflect on what it was like deciding to grow our family after a challenging postpartum experience, and how those experiences influenced the way I approached my next pregnancy and birth. We talk about the importance of self-advocacy, finding the right support system, and recognizing what we can and can't control throughout motherhood.
This conversation also explores the emotional side of pregnancy, identity, body image, and healing. I share how my perspective has evolved over the years and why I believe growth often comes from learning to trust ourselves, embrace change, and let go of perfection.
Whether you're pregnant, postpartum, considering another child, or simply navigating a new season of motherhood, I hope this episode reminds you that your experience is your own and that there is strength in finding the path that feels right for you.

Wed, 29 Jul 2026 - 27min - 354 - 239: Rebuilding Athleticism Postpartum: A Systemic Perspective with Lara Morgan Lee, MD
In today's episode, I sat down with Lara Morgan Lee, MD, a board-certified sports medicine physician and former team doctor for elite professional and collegiate athletes, to talk about what happens when we apply a sports medicine approach to motherhood.
We dive into the gaps that still exist in postpartum healthcare and why returning to function requires more than a six-week clearance. Dr. Morgan shares why the same principles we use to rehabilitate and support athletes—structured progressions, coaching, and multidisciplinary care—need to be part of the conversation for moms, too.
This conversation is a reminder that supporting mothers can't fall on one coach, clinician, or provider. It takes collaboration and a willingness to rethink the way we approach maternal health and athletic performance.

Wed, 22 Jul 2026 - 1h 01min - 353 - 238: The Building Blocks of Raising Athletic Kids
In this solo episode, I'm sharing my perspective as a coach, lifelong athlete, and mom raising two athletic boys. My goal isn't to raise Division I or professional athletes. It's to help my kids build a foundation for a lifetime of athleticism.
I talk about why I believe in exposing kids to multiple sports, developing fundamental movement skills, and giving them opportunities to learn how to move, compete, and interact with different coaches and teammates. We also get into the bigger lessons sport can teach: resilience, bravery, teamwork, body awareness, and how to navigate hard things. This isn't about forcing a specific athletic outcome. It's about helping our kids build confidence, competence, and a positive relationship with movement that can carry them throughout their lives. If you're raising athletic kids or navigating the world of youth sports, I hope this episode gives you a broader perspective on what we're really trying to build for the long term.Resources: Battles Jiu Jitsu: https://battles-jiu-jitsu.webflow.io/Need workouts for your pregnancy or postpartum? Fri, 10 Apr 2026 - 1h 00min - 342 - 227: The Evolution of Pregnancy and Postpartum Athleticism: 4 Key Updates
In this solo episode of the Practice Brave podcast, I share an inside look at how Pregnancy and Postpartum Athleticism has evolved over the years—and why that evolution matters for both coaches and athletes.
Since 2017, the certification has gone through four major updates, each shaped by emerging research, real-world coaching experience, and the feedback from our growing community. In this episode, I walk through some of the most important changes and what they mean for how we support women through pregnancy and postpartum today.
I also talk about the critical role of research-informed coaching strategies and why it's no longer enough to rely on outdated information or generalized approaches. Supporting pregnant and postpartum athletes requires a deeper understanding of both physiological and psychological factors—and a willingness to adapt as our knowledge continues to grow.
Beyond coaching, I reflect on the broader cultural shift we're seeing: more women choosing to stay active during pregnancy and return to athleticism postpartum. With that shift comes a responsibility to provide better guidance, better support, and more nuanced conversations around what's possible.
This episode is a reminder that when we empower women with accurate information and thoughtful coaching, we don't just improve performance—we improve confidence, quality of life, and long-term athletic longevity.

Wed, 04 Feb 2026 - 1h 06min - 334 - 219: Not Fragile, Not Invincible: Adaptable Coaching for the Pregnant & Postpartum Athlete
In this solo episode, I unpack a conversation that's been building for over a decade—one sparked by a recent post that stirred both strong agreement and strong reaction. I reflect on how the pregnant and postpartum athlete narrative has evolved, especially within the CrossFit and strength-training space, and why so many women still feel confused, frustrated, or unsupported during these seasons.
This episode is about finding the middle ground. Pregnancy and postpartum aren't about fragility or invincibility—they're about adaptability. I talk about why these seasons are powerful catalysts for growth, how ego and identity get challenged, and why long-term athleticism should always be the goal. More than anything, I emphasize the importance of coaching and messaging that considers the whole person: mindset, physiology, and future performance.
If you're an athlete, a coach, or a mom navigating these transitions, this episode is a reminder that athleticism doesn't end when motherhood begins—but it does evolve. And when we respect that process, outcomes improve not just physically, but mentally and emotionally too.

Wed, 14 Jan 2026 - 21min - 331 - 216: Building a Jiu Jitsu Community from the Ground Up: Battles Jiu Jitsu Opening Jan 2026
In this episode, I sit down with my husband, Jared Battles, to share the story behind our newest chapter together: opening Battles Jiu Jitsu. We reflect on how this idea moved from a quiet "what if" conversation to becoming a real, brick-and-mortar space rooted in purpose, faith, and community.
We talk about why jiu jitsu has played such a meaningful role in our lives, how our backgrounds in athletics, coaching, and service shaped the culture we want to create, and why building a family-centered training environment matters so much to us. From welcoming beginners to supporting women, kids, first responders, and hobbyists alike, our goal is to create a gym where people feel safe, supported, and genuinely cared for—on and off the mats.
This conversation is about more than opening a gym. It's about practicing brave, trusting the redirects in life, and building something meaningful alongside the people we love most. If you've ever thought about starting something new, stepping into discomfort, or redefining what success looks like for your family, this episode is for you.

Wed, 10 Dec 2025 - 51min - 329 - 214: Birth Trauma, Survival, and the Power of Community with Kayleigh Summers
In this episode, I sit down with Kayleigh Summers, a perinatal trauma therapist and the voice behind The Birth Trauma Mama. Kayleigh shares her powerful story of surviving an amniotic fluid embolism (AFE)—a rare and often fatal childbirth emergency—and how that experience completely reshaped her life, identity, and path into motherhood.
We talk about what it was like to navigate recovery after a traumatic birth, the emotional complexity that comes with surviving something life-threatening, and the grief that can follow when your birth and postpartum experience look nothing like what you imagined. Kayleigh also opens up about rebuilding her sense of self, the importance of trauma-informed care, and why community and shared stories matter so deeply for women who feel alone in their experiences.
Today, Kayleigh uses both her clinical background and lived experience to support others who are processing perinatal trauma, helping mothers feel seen, validated, and less alone in their healing.

Wed, 03 Dec 2025 - 55min - 328 - 213: You Asked, We Answered: AMA with Pelvic Floor Physical Therapist Mindy English, DPT
In this episode, I'm joined once again by my good friend and collaborator, Mindy English — a pelvic floor physical therapist here in Eagle, Idaho, who works extensively with female athletes, especially pregnant and postpartum women.
We've been running a pelvic floor PT series this past year, aiming to make conversations around women's pelvic health less taboo and more empowering. For this episode, we took your questions from Instagram and dove into everything from clinical pelvic floor assessments to practical, everyday strategies that support athletic performance and recovery.
This was one of my favorite conversations because it captures the curiosity, confusion, and honesty that come with understanding your body — especially as an athlete and a woman. Mindy and I always aim to make this information approachable, practical, and relevant, no matter what season of life you're in.

Wed, 19 Nov 2025 - 52min - 327 - 212: Olympian Hannah Miley on Motherhood, Identity, and Returning to Sport
In this episode, I talk with Olympian swimmer Hannah Miley about her transition into motherhood and what it's been like navigating a return to swimming postpartum. We dive into the culture of swimming in Scotland, why pelvic floor health matters for swimmers and female athletes in general, and the identity shifts that happen when you step away from sport after competing at the highest level. Hannah opens up about her own postpartum recovery experience, the gaps she's seen in resources for female athletes, and her vision for building more support and community for moms in sport. This is an honest, powerful conversation about redefining athleticism, rebuilding postpartum, and staying connected to the parts of ourselves that still feel like athletes.

Thu, 06 Nov 2025 - 1h 03min - 326 - 211: Constipation and the Pelvic Floor: What You Need to Know with Mindy English, Orthopedic & Pelvic Health PT
In this episode, I sit down again with Mindy English, Orthopedic & Pelvic Health PT with a background in sports and orthopedics based here in Eagle, Idaho. Mindy and I have done several episodes together as part of our pelvic health series for female athletes, and this one takes on a topic that doesn't get enough attention: constipation, gut health, and how they connect to pelvic floor symptoms. We dive into how digestion, nutrition, and pelvic health are deeply interconnected—and how constipation can affect everything from athletic performance to prolapse symptoms. Mindy shares what she sees clinically in both adults and kids, and we talk through why simply "eating more fiber" often isn't the full solution. This conversation is real, relevant, and full of practical takeaways for athletes, coaches, and anyone who's ever struggled with gut issues or pelvic health symptoms.

Tue, 24 Jan 2023 - 58min - 317 - 102: The Lie We Tell Ourselves (and have been told by others) About What Our Bodies Can Do
How often have you been told, or believed that you "can't do ____ because of ___," when it comes to exercise? For example, "I can't run because of my knees," or "I can't deadlift because it hurts my back."
We are often quick to take pain or discomfort with exercise and eliminate it completely.
We have created absolutes. While sometimes indicated, oftentimes, there's an opportunity to adjust mechanics before eliminating the movement altogether.
The thing about athleticism is we have OPTIONS, not limitations.
Yet, we often see an emphasis on the limitations in the medical, practitioner, and fitness communities.
There are many variables we can adjust that provide options to still do the activity, to our own unique capacity. In this episode, I provide examples and shifts to our approach as athletes and coaches to help explore our options when it comes to exercise and unique needs.

Mon, 31 Oct 2022 - 1h 05min - 311 - 96: New Research "A Timeline for Returning to Performance Postpartum"
🎉 We have published research in The International Journal of Sports Physical Therapy (IJSPT).
Historically, there is not a lot of research on female athletes. The research for pregnancy and postpartum exercise is often shortsighted, to say the least. This "population" of pregnant and postpartum athletes is still considered new.
We 👏 are 👏 changing 👏 that.
The work we are doing in *real life* is getting reflected in the research, which is a critical step forward, and only the beginning of bringing this to more journals, and stages and continually changing the messaging/info that exists in the medical, practitioner, and fitness industries.
Shoutout to my fellow authors:

This is the work my business, @pregnant.postpartum.athlete, pursues and why it's critical we certify coaches, and provide athletes with updated program design + resources for pregnancy and postpartum.

Mon, 27 Jun 2022 - 31min - 296 - Episode 81: Navigating Exercise and Pregnancy as a CrossFit Athlete with Desiree Poppens
This is probably one of the most special episodes I've had, and one that every single pregnant athlete can benefit from listening to. I interviewed my sister, from the hospital while she was in early labor. I swear she was OK with us in order to help pass the time. Her water unexpectedly broke at 37 weeks exactly, surprising us all!
We talked about her training through pregnancy, especially because so much of it was shared on my platforms. We discussed the different symptoms she had, what we did about them, and her overall approach to navigating this chapter as a CrossFit athlete and soon to be mom. Her baby was born about 12 hours later.

Thu, 23 Jun 2022 - 34min - 295 - Episode 80: Why Adjusting Training During Pregnancy and Postpartum is Actually Important
It's easy to get consumed by the current season you're in, without being able to zoom out and acknowledge the big picture desires and goals, which influence the choices of the current. Pregnant and postpartum athletes become incredibly overwhelmed by how much change is happening to their body, their brain, their lifestyle, etc, and there can be a desperate attempt to maintain, and hold tight to everything they know instead of being able and willing to adapt.
This is the episode that every pregnant and postpartum athlete (and those who coach them) needs to understand about their training and approach to this season on behalf of their lifetime of athleticism.

Mon, 13 Jun 2022 - 24min - 294 - Episode 79: POP and Hysterectomies with Dr. Jocelyn Fitzgerald a Urogynecology & Pelvic Reconstructive Surgeon
This is a practical, deeply informative episode with Dr. Fitzgerald on a variety of women's health symptoms and experiences, specifically pelvic organ prolapse and hysterectomies, which are two very misunderstood and under represented circumstances that many women can experience in the lifetime. I often say I wish more of these things were "common knowledge," and this is one step toward having a better understanding of pelvic health-related considerations.
I learned a ton in this episode, and you will too.

Mon, 23 May 2022 - 42min - 292 - Episode 77: What Few People Tell You About Motherhood
Pregnancy, postpartum, and motherhood in general are significant transformational seasons, where the changes happen fast and extremely noticeably. There is a shift, or loss of what was, with a significant gain of what is becoming. It's amazing, and it's hard. It's exciting and it's ok to miss what used to be. It's BOTH. It's ok to have complicated feelings over BOTH the gratitude and the complexity. I hope you enjoy this raw conversation.

Mon, 09 May 2022 - 19min - 291 - Episode 76: Tips for Parenting a Youth Athlete
Parenting youth athletes is a subject I feel passionately about, combining my profession as a coach, and my history as an athlete, with my new reality of being a mom of little athletes. I call it "coach mom," because that is the lens I see their sport experiences through, and If we want to help our kids pursue a lifetime of athleticism, how we raise them as they experience sports at a young age, is critical. This episode covers different strategies and things to be aware of (what to do and what to definitely not do) as your kids begin their lives as athletes.

Wed, 20 Apr 2022 - 27min - 289 - Episode 74: Exercise Programming For The Pregnant And Postpartum Athlete
In this week's episode, Heather Osby is back to interview me about exercise program design, specifically as it relates to pregnancy and postpartum. It can be confusing for coaches and practitioners to know exercises and progressions to help, and even more confusing for athletes because they second guess if their workouts are "right" for them.
This episode helps take big concepts and theories and provides practical and applicable examples.
