I first came across Adele Bates when I was judging the Storytelling category at the Speaker Awards—and her talk really stood out and grabbed my attention. My guest today is Heather Lillico. I saw Lee Warren speak at the Professional Speaking Association summit and he was one of the star turns of the event. The theme was standing out, and his talk was aimed at helping speakers to do exactly that, for the right reasons.  Lee was a magician by night and a sales director by day before he fell into professional speaking. "I've been booked to do a fireside chat at a conference, have you got any tips?" This is a question I got a few weeks ago from one of my Green Room clients, and she actually had the event this week.  In response I shared with her some tactics she could use before and during the event to ensure she influenced the direction of the conversation to where she could share her message effectively and make the most of the opportunity.  This is something that you need to consider for any interview format, whether it's with the media, or a podcast interview and that's why I'm sharing some with you too. The definition of 'self-expression' is the expression of one's feelings, thoughts, or ideas, through words, choices or actions, especially in writing, art, music, or dance. This show was prompted by the question of a podcast listener, but reflected a recurring issue with people that I work with.  My clients have written great books, become accomplished experts in their field and have a big message to share, but when it comes to sharing their views in person or on stage, a number of them begin to doubt themselves. Imagine the scenario, you've turned up to a speaking gig, or important presentation and your stomach is playing up, or you're feeling foggy, and it's not because you had a heavy night out. Please be aware that this episode does discuss the topics of death and suicide. Each of us has a story to tell, but for many people no reason compelling enough emerges for us to embark on the journey to sharing that story with others.  But for some people, there comes a time where something happens and it ignites a burning desire to share their story, so that others can learn what we've discovered or  avoid the pain that we've encountered. That is what happened to Don Ryan.  He was a regular guy with a job as a therapist, and a family, who had lost some people he loved. But when a third person he loved decided to die by suicide, Don knew, on all sorts of levels of his being, that he needed to share his story to help other people like him and contribute towards a big change. That's when he wrote a book called, 'The Secret Struggle: Surviving the Suicide of a Loved One', where he pairs his personal experience of losing three members of his family with the professional insights gained across three decades of work in the social services field.  After writing the book, Don knew he wanted to turn the book into a talk, both to share his message more widely, and as a means by which people could discover his book. We are living in tumultuous times, we are facing some of the biggest challenges ever as a species, and as individual countries, organisations and people.  And despite the huge incentives to come together to work through these problems, we are in a lot of ways more divided than ever before.  Many speakers today are talking on some of these big topics and wicked problems, looking to shift audience perspectives and inspire them to get into action and make positive change happen. To achieve this, conventional wisdom has suggested that we need to incentivise people to make a change by tapping into material desires because that is what society is geared to admire and aspire to.   But what if that isn't true, what if there are more powerful levers to pull to effect change? All of us want to be healthy, happy and live a long and active life, but getting clarity on how to achieve that is a struggle. The information we get is often tainted by corporate interests pushing us in the direction of their products or pills, and all of this can leave you feeling like you're in a maze full of dead ends, getting spun around with no way to find the right path to wellness. In the meantime, many of us are getting diagnosed with obesity and chronic diseases that can feel like a prison sentence.  When I heard Dr Brooke Bussard speak, it felt like there was light at the end of the tunnel. When I met David Van Bennekum on Linked In and he told me he'd written a self-help book on National Security, I thought 'That's a bit unusual, followed by blimey he's got some guts … that's a challenging topic'.  My curiosity was well and truly piqued though, so I had a look at his LinkedIn profile and saw that he was a former United States Marine Corps Infantry and Logistics Officer. He was a veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan and he'd retired from active service as a Lieutenant Colonel.  Then I saw that besides that, he had a law degree and also a Masters in National Security Law from Georgetown University. He obviously had the knowledge, but as I messaged him back to find out more, I'm not going to lie … based on previous conversations with some 'experts', I was fully expecting him to bore the pants off me! But … the opposite happened. The other day I had a talk planning call with a potential client, and he said: "I just want to get consistent results. Sometimes I start my talk and I can feel the energy shift, and I know I've engaged them. But other times, I just can't get their attention, and I want to understand how to do this consistently every time I speak." The truth is that grabbing your audience's attention in the right way, (or 'hooking'' them in, as I call it), is one of the biggest stumbling blocks for a successful talk. The first 180 seconds of your talk is perhaps the most crucial, and that's because in those two to three minutes you are communicating a lot to your audience without even realising it.  In this show, I'm going to show you how to make the most of that time, and to avoid the bear traps I so often see speakers falling into at the start of their talk.  Enjoy! Not too long ago I heard one of the gurus in my space say that one of the big factors in his success is that when everyone else 'zigs', he 'zags'. You can see 'zigging' going on all around you, suddenly everyone wants to be a neurodiversity expert, or an AI expert, because that's what's hot, because they are chasing the trend.  But what if you don't do that? What if you go your own way, and stay true to who you are and who you want to help?  That is the path that Becky Benfield-Humberstone has chosen right from the get go. Most of us have experienced sales 'tactics', and likely we've either recoiled against them and scarpered (physically or digitally), or have gone ahead with our needed purchase, even though a little bit of shine has worn off the relationship with the person that used them on us. Our experiences have made us sceptical of anyone with something to sell, and allergic to feeling 'salesy' ourselves.  But whether we like it or not, we're all in the business of selling something to someone, whether that's ourselves as a speaker, our book to a reader, or our products and services to clients and customers. I had a similar issue come up with two clients this week, and it's a mistake I see people making regularly, not just with their speaking, but in other critical content too. This mistake can result in people not paying attention to you, lost business opportunities, and normally leads to frustration and the question, "I just don't understand what I'm doing wrong!" SUMMARY Is it possible to brag in a way that attracts people to you, rather than turning them off? Lisa Bragg, author of Bragging Rights believes so, and she is here to redefine bragging and share exactly how to do it the right way.     SHOW NOTES We have been conditioned since childhood to keep quiet about our achievements. We are taught things like, 'nobody likes a show off', 'stay humble' and 'self praise is no praise'. And the majority of us conform, stay quiet, assuming that our good work will be noticed, and we will get our reward in good time. When we see those people who are shameless self promoters we judge them and 'tut' and assume that they will be smited by the God of Humility… (whilst secretly wishing people knew about the great things we had done).  But then we notice they are not being called out or shamed for being a 'show off', in fact they're getting more attention, and they are the ones getting rewarded with promotions, or new clients.   And then we get frustrated, bitter, and envious, which affects the way we are being and communicating and turns people off. Or … we go out all guns blazing and tell everyone everything we ever done all at once… which also puts people off. The big question is … why are we told that we should stay quiet and humble when it harms rather than helps? Waking up paralysed in 2014 completely turned Jamie McAnsh's life upside down.  He lost his job, and his independence, but he was determined to forge a new path and purpose for his life.  That included becoming a top disabled athlete, and fulfilling his dream of climbing Mount Everest in 2022. One of the most important parts of your talk is the opening, because you have to grab the attention of your audience and show why the talk is relevant for them. What I've noticed recently with some of my clients, is that their 'hook', (or 'lightning bolt' as I call it), is good, but they aren't fully committing to it, and that is weakening the opening and the connection with the audience and the topic they're speaking about. As a speaker you need to be like the director of a movie, using your talk content and delivery to captivate the audience. Your talk should contain moments that challenge them, make them ponder, create desire and yearning and move them towards your intended destination. All in a way that feels natural and aligned. Adding the label of speaker to your bio is becoming more common, but calling yourself a speaker and actually being able to deliver your message in a way that educates, inspires and motivates are two very different things.  There are lots of people boring the pants off audiences, when they don't need to, and this is a belief that my guest Tina Bakehouse and I share in common.  Tina is a communications coach and soon to be author of a new book called 'Discover Our Magnetic Speaker Within'. When you have a big idea and message to share, and you want to get it out to more people you have so many more channels available today for achieving that.  Regardless of the number of platforms at your fingertips, your choice really comes down to two options - do you communicate one to many using speaking or writing? As speakers we are using stories to affect our audience. At the bare minimum a story will entertain. A few times people have singled out one interview of mine as a great example of someone using short stories brilliantly. That episode was 107, and it was with Greg Satell. Greg's work has appeared in Harvard Business Review, Barron's, Forbes, Inc and Fast Company, and he is considered one of the foremost experts on innovation today. No matter how far you niche down in terms of your message and services, there will always be competition. How you think about that competition and respond to it will determine the level of success you have and the speed at which you achieve that success.  I know that it can feel scary and all sorts of doubts can surface about what you can offer compared to everyone else. That is normal. There are more platforms available for speakers to share their message than ever before. There are also more people speaking than ever before. There's a lot of talk about the benefits of meditation, not only in helping us cope with the challenges we face in modern life, but also the physical benefits that may give us longer lives and better overall health.  That's why a lot more people are now meditating, and I'm one of them. Until now, I've dabbled in it, but one of my goals this year was to go all in on meditation and do it every day. So, I enrolled on a 10-day virtual  meditation retreat, which I'm halfway through at the time of recording. Currently, I'm meditating for two hours a day, one in the morning and one in the evening, which is a challenge. I'm doing this for two key reasons, firstly to improve my focus and secondly to get a stronger connection to my intuition.  But the big question I wanted to explore in this episode is whether introducing meditation into your life could help you become a better speaker?  Enjoy!
