During the 1920 election, Harding had pledged to address these problems and lead America into an era of "normalcy." In this episode, we examine how successful was in fulfilling that promise.

Teddy Roosevelt Nearly Died in a Cavalry Charge Against German Machine Guns in WW1
Suggested Show Notes/Description:
Teddy Roosevelt faced many challenges at the end of his life. Racked by rheumatism, a ticking embolism, pathogens in his blood, a bad leg from an accident, and a bullet in his chest from an assassination attempt. But none of that stopped Roosevelt from attempting to reassemble the Rough Riders for a final charge against the Germans in World War One, pushing them into a likely suicide mission of a cavalry attack against 50 caliber machine guns.
Suffering from grief and guilt, marginalized by world events, the great glow that had been his life was now but a dimming lantern. But TR’s final years were productive ones as well: he churned out several “instant” books that promoted U.S. entry into the Great War, and he was making plans for another run at the Presidency in 1920 at the time of his death. Indeed, his political influence was so great that his opposition to the policies of Woodrow Wilson helped the Republican Party take back the Congress in 1918. To look at Roosevelt’s final years, Scott Rank, host of History Unplugged, speaks with Bill Hazelgrove, author of “The Last Charge of the Rough Rider.” It was Roosevelt’s quest for the “vigorous life” that, ironically, may have led to his early demise at the age of sixty. "The Old Lion is dead,” TR’s son Archie cabled his brother on January 6, 1919, and so, too, ended a historic era in American life and politics.

In foreign policy circles, the "madman theory" asserts that acting irrationally and unpredictably can be a major advantage when dealing with one's adversaries. In recent years, some have pointed to Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin as practitioners of the madman theory.
The father of this theory, however, was not Trump or Putin: it was America's 37th president, Richard Nixon. In this episode, we interview Professor Zachary Jacobson, author of On Nixon's Madness, about this controversial theory.

On March 4, 1865, Abraham Lincoln delivered his second inaugural address. He invoked Scripture and discussed the ongoing Civil War in religious terms -- as divine punishment for the sin of slavery. It was a surprising speech for a man once known as a religious skeptic.
What led Lincoln to deliver such a religious speech? What were Lincoln's religious views? How did they affect his leadership? Joshua Zeitz has just written a new book to answer those questions. It's titled Lincoln's God: How Faith Transformed a President and a Nation.

The roots of the Second World War in Europe lie within the First World War. The 1919 Treaty of Versailles formally ended the war between Germany and the western Allies, but the geopolitical situation it created was far from stable. Ten years later, the Great Depression made things even worse. In this episode preview from Key Battles of American History (the first in the World War II in Europe series), James and cohost Sean McIver discuss the unsettled state of Europe between 1918 and 1930 and the gradual fracturing of the uneasy peace that it enjoyed.

Gerald Ford occupies a truly singular place in American history: he is the only chief executive who took office without getting a single vote for either the presidency or vice presidency. What do Italian unification, Pinocchio and pizza have in common? In this episode preview from History of the Papacy, host Steve Guerra dives in!
The Risorgimento was a period of political and social upheaval in Italy that lasted from the early 19th century to the mid-20th century. The movement aimed to unite the various states and regions of Italy into one unified nation. Pinocchio, the beloved children's story written by Carlo Collodi, can be seen as a metaphor for Italian unification through the character's journey from a wooden puppet to a real boy. And last but not least, let's talk about pizza. Italy's most famous export, pizza, is a symbol of the country's rich cultural heritage and culinary traditions. Whether you're a fan of traditional Margherita or a more unconventional topping, there's a pizza for everyone.

Theodore Roosevelt once said that he could only do one of two things: be president or control his daughter Alice. He insisted that he couldn't do both at the same time. It has been said that "Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them." In his youth, there was little to indicate that Theodore Roosevelt was destined for greatness. He spent much of his childhood bedridden, suffering from asthma. Roosevelt, however, overcame his ailments and dedicated his life to achieving greatness in every aspect of his life: physically, intellectually, and professionally. When Roosevelt became president in 1901, he implemented progressive policies chiefly to make America a great nation. In this episode, we cover how Roosevelt's personal crusade changed the course of American history.

Artist: Nip Rogers, www.NipRogers.comWed, 04 Jan 2023 - 133 - History Unplugged: Alexander's Postwar Plans
If Alexander The Great Hadn’t Died, He Might Have Conquered Europe, Circumnavigated Africa, and Built His Own Silk Road
“And Alexander wept, seeing as he had no more worlds to conquer.” That’s a quote from Hans Gruber in Die Hard, which is a very convoluted paraphrase from Plutarch’s essay collection “Moralia.” Despite the questionable sourcing, there’s plenty of truth in that unattributed quote from Mr. Gruber.
Alexander the Great’s death at 323 BC in Babylon marked the end of the most consequential military campaign in antiquity. He left behind an empire that stretched from Greece to India, planted the seeds of the Silk Road, and made Greek an international language across Eurasia, all in 13 short years. He became and remained the biggest celebrity in the ancient world, probably only replaced by Jesus a few centuries into the Christian era.
But what if he had not died as a young man? What if he had lived years or decades more? How much more influence could he have had? We have clues about Alexander’s plans for the future – and they come from Greek chroniclers Diodorus and Arrian, writing centuries after his death. They include conquering the Mediterranean coast all the way to the Pillars of Hercules (Rock of Gibraltar), building a tomb for his father Philp that would be as large as the Great Pyramid of Giza, and transplanting populations from Greece to Persia and vice versa to unite his domains through intermarriage.
To explore this hypothetical scenario is Anthony Everitt, author of “Alexander the Great: His Life and Mysterious Death.” We look at the life of the most influential person in the ancient world, and explore the ramifications of his life having even more influence.

Grover Cleveland’s political career—a dizzying journey that saw him rise from obscure lawyer to president of the United States in just three years—was marked by contradictions. A politician of uncharacteristic honesty and principle, he was nevertheless dogged by secrets from his personal life. A believer in limited government, he pushed presidential power to its limits to combat a crippling depression, suppress labor unrest, and resist the forces of American imperialism. A headstrong executive who alienated Congress, political bosses, and even his own party, his stubbornness nevertheless became the key to his political appeal. The most successful Democratic politician of his era, he came to be remembered most fondly by Republicans. This episode is a preview of History Unplugged hosted by Scott Rank, a podcast in the Parthenon Podcast network.
War is assumed to be one of the chief features of human history. Plenty of ancient and modern writers back up this perspective (Plato said that only the dead have seen the end of war; John Steinbeck said all war is a symptom of man's failure as a thinking animal, suggesting it was hard-wired into our brutish nature). But what if the conventional wisdom is wrong? What if war isn’t the status quo? This is the argument made by today’s guest, who says prolonged violence between groups isn’t normal. Wars shouldn’t happen, and most of the time they don’t.

The Bush family has arguably been the most successful political dynasty in modern American history. But while much has been written about presidents George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush, less is known about the women in their family, specifically the matriarch Dorothy Bush and First Lady Barbara Bush. In this episode, we interview J. Randy Taraborrelli about his book Grace & Steel: Dorothy, Barbara, Laura and the Women of the Bush Dynasty.

This is a preview of Key Battles of American History hosted by James Early, a podcast in Parthenon Podcasts.
As late as the 1860s, Japan was a semi-feudal nation, largely cut off from the rest of the world. But within a few decades, the nation had transformed itself into a major industrial power with one of the world’s most well-trained, well-equipped, and well-led militaries. Between 1905 and 1941, Japan defeated Russia, gained several former German colonies in the Pacific, seized Manchuria, and invaded and conquered much of coastal China. How did Japan accomplish all this? In this episode, James and Scott explain Japan’s meteoric rise to world power status.

In 1796, George Washington decided to retire after decades of public service, but he was worried for his nation’s future. This episode explores his Farewell Address, which he hoped would guide Americans beyond his own lifetime.
WASHINGTON'S BIRTHDAY
Did you know that Presidents' Day is officially called Washington's Birthday? The federal holiday was established by an act of Congress in 1879 and was celebrated every February 22 until 1971 when the holiday was shifted to the third Monday in February. This places it between February 15 and 21, which makes "Washington's Birthday" something of a misnomer, since it never occurs on Washington's actual birthday, February 22. With the proximity of the holiday to Abraham Lincoln's birthday on February 12, the name "Presidents' Day" emerged in the 1980s with a push from advertisers.

This time, instead of destroying, we are going to do some saving. If you could save one person in history from an untimely death, who would it be? How would their survival make a positive impact The only ground rule is that you can’t choose JFK. Stephen King already showed us this was impossible in 11/22/63.

The made-in-Hollywood marriage of Ronald and Nancy Reagan is more than a love story—it’s the partnership that made him president. Of the pair, Nancy was the one with the sharper instincts about people, the superior radar for trouble, and the keen sense of how to secure his place in history. The only person in the world to whom Ronald Reagan felt truly close, Nancy understood how to foster his strengths and compensate for his weaknesses. Neither timid nor apologetic about wielding her power, Nancy Reagan made herself a place in history. In this episode we interview the Karen Tumulty, the author of The Triumph of Nancy Reagan.

On February 28, 1972, President Richard Nixon and First Lady Pat Nixon were welcomed home by Vice President Spiro Agnew after landing at Andrews Air Force Base following the return of their historic trip to the People's Republic of China. China had been closed off for over two decades from the rest of the world and many saw them as espousing a radical version of communism, one that was even more dangerous than that espoused by the Soviet Union. Richard Nixon had risen to the presidency with the reputation as a stern anti-communist, and yet he became the first American president to visit the People's Republic of China. The former anti-communist firebrand now saw himself as a statesman who would usher in a new era of peace. An enduring theme of Abraham Lincoln's life was his genius for striking a balance between opposing forces. Lacking formal schooling but with an unquenchable thirst for self-improvement, Lincoln had a talent for wrestling and bawdy jokes that made him popular with his peers, even as his appetite for poetry and prodigious gifts for memorization set him apart from them through his childhood, his years as a lawyer, and his entrance into politics. In this episode, we interview David S. Reynolds on his new book, Abe: Abraham Lincoln in His Times.
