Transacting Value Podcast

Joshua "Porter" Porthouse

Looking for ways to reinvigorate your self-worth or help instill it in others? You're in the right place. Transacting Value Podcast is a weekly, episodic, conversation-styled podcast that instigates self-worth through personal values. We talk about the impacts of personal values on themes like job satisfaction, mitigating burnout, establishing healthy boundaries, enhancing self-worth, and deepening interpersonal relationships.

This is a podcast about increasing satisfaction in life and your pursuit of happiness, increasing mental resilience, and how to actually build awareness around what your values can do for you as you grow through life.

As a divorced Marine with combat and humanitarian deployments, and a long-distanced parent, I've fought my own demons and talked through cultures around the world about their strategies for rebuilding self-worth or shaping perspective. As a 3d Degree Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do and a lifelong martial artist, I have studied philosophy, psychology, history, and humanities to find comprehensive insights to help all of our Contributors on the show add value for you, worthy of your time.

Ready to go from perceived victim to self-induced victor? New episodes drop every Monday 9 AM EST on our website https://www.TransactingValuePodcast.com, and everywhere your  favorite podcasts are streamed.  Check out Transacting Value by searching "Transacting Value Podcast", on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter/X or YouTube.

  • 136 - A Veteran's Voyage from Battlefields to Badges and Laughter with Casey Reitz

Embarking on a career transition can feel like navigating through a relentless storm. Casey Reitz joins me to share his compass—the values and resilience that have guided him from military service to the laughter-filled realm of stand-up comedy and now, towards the noble path of law enforcement. His compelling narrative reveals the crucial role community plays in finding one's post-service place in the world, and how pursuits like Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu can serve as an anchor during times of change. The conversation weaves through a tapestry of personal identity, growth, and the power of belonging, offering a beacon to those weathering their own professional shifts.

The pursuit of purpose can often lead us through unforeseen challenges. Through my own story, we traverse the landscape of performance anxiety, self-growth, and the siren call to serve. Five years since trading my military uniform for civilian attire, I've encountered crossroads and climbed mountains, culminating in a decision to don a different kind of uniform in law enforcement. We unpack the complex emotions tied to a father's legacy and how the drive to serve transcends the need to escape, shedding light on the inner workings of the call to protect and serve.

In our final chapters, the spotlight falls on the need for recognition, the cultivation of self-worth, and the art of self-awareness—especially poignant for veterans assimilating back into civilian life. Casey and I explore the delicate dance of communicating our needs to superiors and peers. Through stories of unvoiced triumphs and unheard efforts, we underscore the power of self-affirmation in the face of obscurity. Join us as we reflect on building a robust self-awareness that can guide us through stress, conflict, and the heavy mantle of past missteps, encouraging all to step into a brighter, unburdened future.

  • 133 - Navigating Life's Tapestry through Legends and Values with Jamie Ryder

Host Josh Porthouse sits with Jamie Ryder to discuss the intricate weave of personal values and timeless legends; we uncover the threads of honor, duty, and loyalty that bind our collective human narrative. Jamie, hailing from the UK and bringing a love for all things fantasy, comics, and Japanese culture, shares how these tales, from samurai to Kintaro, parallel modern quests for identity and purpose. Our dialogue reveals the universal constants in our ever-evolving societal tapestry, reminding us that these values are as relevant today as they were in the ancient stories that continue to shape us.

Writing can be a beacon in the fog of our internal struggles, something I've found true in my own journey through journaling and reflection. Jamie opens up about his path through mental health issues, how literature has provided a sanctuary, and the subsequent birth of his own business. Together, we navigate the synergy between creativity and therapeutic self-expression, touching upon the transformative power of storytelling in understanding our lives. There's a harmony in writing that allows us to authentically connect with others, a theme resonating through our discussion on how creative outlets can reframe our experiences with anxiety and shape our social interactions.

Venturing into the abstract, we examine the potential of cosmic energy to influence our creativity and worldview. I share the profound personal changes brought about by immersing myself in Japanese culture, a journey of becoming more open-minded and daring. Our episode wouldn't be complete without acknowledging the vital role of mental health in our pursuit of self-discovery and the importance of fostering resilience and positivity. Through these conversations, we not only seek to understand the diverse facets of the human condition but also to inspire others in their own explorations of self and society. Join us on this expedition through the rich and complex landscape of human experience and the art of the written word.
