- 384 - 269: Tara hoped the roof wouldn't blow off
I live in the Tampa Bay area of Florida, and I like it here. I never have to shovel snow, I don’t have to drive on ice, and earthquakes are pretty rare. I can ride my bike almost year-round. But - one of the worst things about living in Florida is going through hurricane season. I’m in the Tampa Bay area, which is on the Gulf of Mexico side, so we’re a little more sheltered. But even here, we sometimes have hurricanes that come up into the gulf and cause some damage when the decide to finally come on land. My son David was actually born during a hurricane. Tara knows about hurricanes because she’s been through a terrifying one. A few years ago she came on the podcast and talked about her experience with Hurricane Dorian. She and her family were at home, in the direct path of this category 5 hurricane. The flood waters were rising, the high winds were threatening to tear their roof off, and all they could do was sit in the dark attic and watch the water keep rising. Tue, 15 Sep 2026 - 382 - 268: Felicia was at the Pentagon on 9/11
Today marks the 25th anniversary of one of the darkest days in American history. On Tuesday, September 11, 2001, terrorists hijacked some airplanes and crashed them in New York, Virginia, and Pennsylvania. Nearly 3,000 innocent people lost their lives that day in those attacks. Many people remember that day very clearly. It’s one of those times where you recall exactly where you were when you first heard the news, and as the events unfolded throughout that morning. Here on the podcast, every year in September we dedicate an episode to the memory of 9/11. We hear someone tell their story of what they experienced on that day. The past episodes have featured guests who were in New York City. For a long time, I’ve wanted to have a guest on who was at the Pentagon on September 11. Those stories are not as easy to find. Earlier this year, Felicia contacted me to tell me about her experience at the Pentagon, and I’m pleased to bring that to you today. May we never forget. Fri, 11 Sep 2026 - 381 - 267: Kevin was crushed by a boulder
A lot of people have a serious fear – they can’t stand the feeling of being trapped in some way. And really, there are a variety of ways this can present itself. It could be a really crowded, small room where the exits are not easy to access. Or it could be when you’re on your back and going into an MRI machine and the top surface is like an inch from your face. Some people fear being in a stuck elevator. I remember having that feeling in high school PE class. We had a few classes where the boys were taught wrestling. So one by one, we’d get paired up with an opponent who was hopefully somewhat similar in size, on a large mat in the gym. And whenever I happened to be underneath the other guy, feeling his weight holding me down, unable to move, I’d briefly get a real panicky feeling until I was able to get up. Did not like that at all – and I was only there for a few seconds. My guest today, Kevin, knows that feeling. Except in his case, he was stuck there for a lot longer than a few seconds. And what had him trapped weighed about 8000 pounds. Full show notes and pictures for this episode are here: https://WhatWasThatLike.com/267 Graphics for this episode by Bob Bretz. Fri, 28 Aug 2026 - 378 - 266: Tracie's mother was Judy
Please note that this episode of What Was That Like has a content warning, for discussion of suicide. Do you remember when you were seven years old? At that age, your biggest concerns are playing with your friends, learning new things at school, riding your bike, and what to put on your Christmas list. At least that’s how it is for a lot of kids. And that’s pretty much how it was for Tracie, who you’re about to hear from. She got along with her older brother and sister, and she loved her mom and dad. To anyone who knew the family, everything seemed fine. But one day, Tracie’s mom made a decision that no one expected – and it changed their family forever. Tue, 18 Aug 2026 - 376 - 265: Ryan prepped a child for court
I’ve never had to testify in court. If I’m ever in a courtroom, I hope it will be as a juror. That hasn’t happened yet, but I’m still hopeful. For many people, having to appear in court, in front of a judge, and a jury, and maybe a room full of people, can be really nerve-wracking. Every word you say is going into the official record, and you’re under oath – what if you say something wrong, or you remember something incorrectly? There could be a lot at stake, and it could depend on YOUR testimony. But lawyers know that. And the lawyer that’s on your side, whether you’re the plaintiff or the defendant, is probably going to give you some helpful advice about how to handle the situation. For my guest today, Ryan, that was part of his job. Today he’s gonna tell the story of when he had to prepare someone to testify in court. This young person was the victim of a sexual assault, so yes, there’s a content warning for this episode. For Ryan, it’s difficult enough to prepare an adult for what to expect in a courtroom. In this case, he was working on behalf of a seven year old child. And what he learned after prosecuting this case is something he never would have expected. Fri, 14 Aug 2026 - 375 - 264: Marina's friend became her stalker
Some people are just not able to handle being put in the Friend Zone. It’s a pretty common thing. Two people meet by circumstance. Maybe they’re college students who have a class together, or they could be co-workers in an office. They get to know each other, and they become really good friends. They end up spending a lot of time hanging out together outside of work or school. They develop a close relationship, maybe even confiding in each other and having some deep conversations. Then there’s a problem that comes in. And I know this doesn’t just happen in male-female relationships, and I don’t have any statistics or studies to back this up; it’s just anecdotal. But from what I’ve seen and read, one of the people, commonly the woman, sees the relationship as platonic. They’re just wonderful friends, and there’s no romance involved. But her male friend, thinks otherwise. He’s developed feelings for this woman, and thinks she might have feelings for him too. Eventually he might express those feelings verbally, or maybe he waits for what he thinks is the right moment and tries to kiss her. That’s when things fall apart. She explains to him that she sees him not as a romantic partner, but just as a close friend. She just put him in the Friend Zone. And different people handle this in different ways. He’s gonna be disappointed of course, but what about beyond that? After he declared his feelings for her, can they still be friends? Sometimes they can. But not always. My guest today, Marina, has experienced this. She told this story on the podcast in one of the earliest episodes, back in 2019. She had a friend who actually scared her – because he took things way too far. Show notes for this episode are here: https://WhatWasThatLike.com/264 Graphics for this episode by Bob Bretz. Tue, 04 Aug 2026 - 373 - Scott's new show - Did I Hear That Right?
I have something brand new for you today. I have started a new storytelling podcast! The new show is called Did I Hear That Right? And I’m co-hosting it with my friend Glenn. For this new podcast, each episode we’re gonna have a guest come on and tell the story of something they’ve done, that most other people have never done. And these stories are all crazy, and they’re fun to listen to. No traumatic stories like animal attacks, nothing like that. And these are shorter episodes too – usually around 20 minutes or so. I’m doing this with my friend Glenn Hebert. He has a LONG history of podcasting. He started the Horse Radio Network, and has hosted the daily morning show called Horses in the Morning – for more than 4000 episodes. I’ve known Glenn for a long time and I know we’re gonna have fun with this show. And I want you to know, the new podcast will have no effect on What Was That Like. That’s my main show, and it will continue with those stories of real people in unreal situations, just like it has since it started 8 years ago. And right now, I’m gonna play you the first episode of Did I Hear That Right? So you can get a feel for what it’s like. Then I’ll be back here to wrap it up after. Learn more about your ad choices. Fri, 31 Jul 2026 - 372 - 263: Larry gave away everything
I want to tell you about my friend Larry. Larry is pretty well known in the podcast world as a content creator, a consultant, and a subject matter expert for journalists. I’ve seen lots of times where he’s appeared on local and national TV shows, talking about podcasting as well as AI – he’s been on the forefront of how to use AI for personal and business productivity. And he’s been a sought-after keynote speaker at lots of organizations where he talks about these things. A few years ago, Larry and I were in Los Angeles during a podcasting conference. One evening during that week there was a big podcast awards show, and there was an after party. I don’t usually go to those things, but for some reason I was there. It was a private party but lots of people were there and it was on a rooftop bar, I don’t even remember the name of it. Of course the music was loud, and you would never guess who the DJ was – Paris Hilton. It was pretty crazy. And of course I would see Larry every year in January in Orlando, at the conference called Podfest. But this past January I didn’t see Larry. I didn’t know why he wasn’t there, and honestly I didn’t think about it a lot. It’s always a busy week and there are a couple thousand people there. But what I didn’t know was that Larry was in rehab at that time. He was trying to overcome Alcohol Use Disorder. Maybe better known as alcoholism. Larry’s life is very different now. His addiction to alcohol means he no longer has his business, his house, his cars, his wife – all gone. He’s working on his comeback now, and he told me the whole story which you’re about to hear. I also need to include a content warning for discussion of suicide. What Larry didn’t know at the time was - when he missed that Orlando conference because of being in rehab – he had not yet reached his rock bottom. Tue, 21 Jul 2026 - 370 - 262: Jami was the jury foreman
One of my favorite movies is Twelve Angry Men. The original was made in 1957 starring Henry Fonda, then it was remade for TV in 1997 starring Jack Lemmon. It’s a true-crime courtroom drama, but most of the action takes place in the jury deliberation room for a murder trial. I think both versions are pretty good. But we know how Hollywood likes to play up the drama and the theatrics, and what we see on the screen is entertaining, but not always very accurate. Wouldn’t it be interesting to know what it’s like to actually be on a jury for a murder trial? That’s what my guest today, Jami, is going to talk about. She was actually the jury foreman. Jami told this story here on the podcast about 4 years ago, and it was a really popular episode. She’s a great storyteller and I think you’ll enjoy hearing all the behind-the-scenes details about being on a jury for a major case – and how this experience inspired her to start her OWN true crime podcast. Fri, 17 Jul 2026 - 369 - 261: Patrick broke his neck
I’ve never had an injury that was serious enough to be what I would think of as “life changing” but some people have. It’s a pretty deep idea to think about. I came across this post online recently. Here’s what this woman wrote: I experienced a life changing injury 6 months ago, which has left me very physically disabled and in excruciating pain 24/7. I am waiting for scans in the next month, after being refused medical care in the country where I was injured, but it is likely there is very little to be done to fix this. I am also trying physical therapy to get better, but so far with no results and just increased pain. The situation is making me severely depressed, and I really need to find some acceptance for what happened, and my life moving forward. I am in therapy already for some other stuff, but not able to come to acceptance for this injury yet. I'm stuck feeling despair and anger, and like I'm only a burden for the people around me, including my partner. I can't work, nor participate in fun activities that requires anything other than sitting, and even that I cannot do for long. I can't go for walks, sex is painful, almost all my hobbies are no longer possible. I barely sleep because of the pain, so I'm always sleep deprived as well. I have to be medicated for pain through the day and night to even be able to talk or move. If I try to skip a day, I cannot function. I really would like to feel that life is worth living even with chronic severe pain and physical disabilities I never imagined having to deal with. I spend so much energy and tears on feeling upset about the situation, and it's interfering with me at least feeling as okay as I possibly can. I need to find radical acceptance, but I feel so heart broken when I try. I don't know what to do. I can just hear the despair in her words. She wrote that in an online forum 5 years ago, so I would love to know how she’s doing today. But I don’t. My guest today is Patrick, and he knows what it’s like to have an accident that results in a life-changing injury. He was young and athletic, and he loved to go surfing and run ultramarathons. But then one day he broke his neck, and he had no idea what the rest of his life was going to look like. Fri, 03 Jul 2026 - 366 - 260: Raw Audio full episode
This is Scott, host of the show. On most episodes of What Was That Like, we talk to a regular person who has been through something extremely unusual – like a rattlesnake bite, a plane crash, a housefire rescue – we have more than 250 episodes with those kinds of stories. Today’s episode has several incredible stories, but it’s a little different. You may have heard me talk about the Raw Audio episodes. These are exclusive, bonus episodes that are only available to listeners who support the show. In the Raw Audio episodes, we typically have 3 stories of something crazy that happened, and we also hear the actual 911 call that took place during that incident. So today, I wanted to give you an idea of what these Raw Audio episodes sound like. And there’s another benefit of being a supporter – you get ALL of the What Was That Like episodes, including the Tuesday Question episodes, without any ads. Just pure content. After today’s stories, I’ll tell you how you can sign up to be a supporter, if you want to. And if not, that’s okay too. I hope you enjoy this episode. Graphics for this episode by Bob Bretz. Tue, 23 Jun 2026 - 364 - 259: Emily was caught by airport security
Do you remember the TV show called Locked Up Abroad? It’s no longer in active production, but you can still see past seasons on some different platforms like Hulu and Apple TV. Every episode of the show was a true story of someone who was traveling outside their own country. Actually I seem to recall that most of the people were Americans traveling outside the US. And they would make a really bad decision to do something like trying to smuggle drugs or other illegal things into this other country. And of course they would get caught, and now they’re arrested and in jail in a place where they don’t really know the rules or procedures, and there might not even be anyone there who speaks English. It’s a true nightmare scenario. My guest today is Emily. She has personally been through that type of experience, and she told that story here on the podcast 5 years ago. She was the one who tried to get through airport security, while having bags of cocaine taped to her body. That was not a good day for Emily. But wait til you hear what she’s done with her life since then. Fri, 19 Jun 2026 - 363 - 258: T saved her dog
I have two children, one boy and one girl. Actually they’re not children, they’re adults and they’re on their own now of course. But I still have a couple of young lives that I’m responsible for. I’m talking about my two dogs, Lilly and Fenway, they are both Yorkies, and obviously I would do anything for those little pups. They’re actually getting up there in dog years now – they’re 12 and 13. But they’re in good health so far, we go for a walk twice a day, and they still love chasing a ball sometimes. But I know they are in their golden years so I’m trying to appreciate every minute I have with them. I think anyone who’s a dog lover can identify with wanting to protect your dog from any type of harm that might come their way. I mean, I don’t want them to run into the street, I don’t want them to eat something that might be harmful, and I surely don’t want them to get into a fight with another dog. My guest today goes by the nickname “T”. Not the word “tea”, just the letter “T”. She found herself in a situation where her dog was in trouble. And she had to make a split-second decision. And I’m gonna do something here that I don’t normally do – I’m gonna tell you ahead of time that today, T and her wonderful dog are doing fine. The story does have a happy ending. I don’t usually have spoilers here in the opener, but I know some listeners would not want to hear a story if the dog doesn’t make it. And I don’t blame you – I wouldn’t want to hear that either. But you’re safe with this one. So I hope you enjoy the story of T, and how she saved her dog’s life. Fri, 05 Jun 2026 - 360 - 257: Mae's ex-husband went to prison
Have you ever had a really big vision of doing something, and then the way it turned out was actually very different from what you had planned? I think this is almost universal for us as humans. Think back to when you were a teenager. You probably had some ideas about becoming an adult and what that would look like. What kind of career you might have, or not. Finding a partner if you wanted one. Thinking about being a parent, or not having kids at all. A lot of young people have this vision of how they think their life is going to play out. And at that age, we don’t really have enough experience to know that those things almost never actually play out exactly as you expect them to. I mean, just by listening to the guests that I talk to here on the podcast, we know that things happen that we never would have imagined – and life can take a completely different path. My guest today is Mae. In high school, she had her life planned out. She had already met and was in love with her life partner, and they were going to get married as soon as they could, and they were going to have children, and live happily ever after. That’s not what happened. This episode has a content warning for domestic abuse and graphic sexual violence, because the fairy tale life Mae had planned gradually turned into a nightmare. Until she finally decided that she’d had enough. Tue, 26 May 2026 - 358 - 256: Courtney was able to say goodbye
Today’s episode deals with a controversial question: Should a person be legally allowed to get medical assistance to end their own life? And keep in mind, this usually pertains to someone who is terminally ill, and who is also mentally and emotionally stable enough to make that decision on their own. Here in the US, most states still do not allow it. But Medical Assistance in Dying is legal in all of Canada. That’s where Courtney lives. Courtney told this amazing story on the podcast about four years ago. It’s the story of her mother’s decision, and it’s both wonderful and heartbreaking. And stick around after, because I was able to record a chat with Courtney to get an update on what’s happened since we last spoke. Fri, 22 May 2026 - 357 - 255: Jayson prevented a murder
One of the things that makes this life so interesting is that something can happen that’s life-changing, when you least expect it. I mean, you’re just going about your day – stopping at the grocery store, or putting gas in your car, just a routine day. Then something totally unexpected happens, right in front of you. I remember one time when I was just on my way to work in the morning. Just driving on this rural road in Maine, and there was a pickup truck in front of me. And there was a man riding in the back – in the open bed of the truck. He was standing, facing forward, just hanging out. All of a sudden that truck went to the right, off the road, right into a power pole. I don’t know what caused the driver to lose control, but fortunately there were no serious injuries. Even the guy in the truck bed was mostly okay. But it just happened so fast. My guest today is Jayson. He was having a pretty normal day, just running some errands. Then he found himself unexpectedly witnessing an attempted murder. If you’d like to contact Jayson, you can do that through his website: http://www.jaysoncross.com/ You can also find him on Instagram, Facebook, YouTube and TikTok: @jaysoncrosscomedy On X (Twitter): @jcrosscomedy Full show notes and pictures for this episode are here: https://WhatWasThatLike.com/255 Graphics for this episode by Bob Bretz. Fri, 08 May 2026 - 354 - 254: Elaina was friends with Mickey
Today’s episode is a little different. If you’re a regular listener to the show, you know that usually we hear a story from a regular person about something they’ve experienced that was extremely unusual. We have over 250 episodes like that – plane crashes, mass shootings, animal attacks, and lots more. And it’s not all trauma stories – we have some happy ones too. But sometimes we change it up, and I have a guest on who has a really unusual job. I’ve talked to Spence, who’s a lighthouse keeper, and Dan, who prepares people for their first time going to prison, and Jen – who works as a professional bridesmaid. You can scroll through all the back episodes and find those and a few more. So today I’m speaking with Elaina. As a young person, she was hired to work at the Magic Kingdom in Disney World – as Mickey Mouse. You know, when you’re at Disney World, and you’re walking around trying to decide if you go ride the Space Mountain roller coaster, or take a break in the air conditioning and watch the Country Bear Musical Jamboree, and all of a sudden you see standing right in front of you is – Mickey Mouse. Waving, signing autographs, and just making people happy. Yeah, that’s what Elaina did. She also played Minnie Mouse, and a few other characters sometimes. We talked about how she ended up getting that job, what it’s like to wear the costume, what would get you fired, and the celebrities she crossed paths with. And of course, what everyone wants to know about – the infamous tunnels UNDER Disney World. You’re gonna get all the behind-the-scenes stuff today. And why is this episode titled “Elaina was FRIENDS with Mickey”? She’ll explain that too. If you’d like to contact Elaina, she’s in the Facebook group - https://WhatWasThatLike.com/facebook Full show notes and pictures for this episode are here: https://WhatWasThatLike.com/254 Graphics for this episode by Bob Bretz. Tue, 28 Apr 2026 - 352 - 253: John was lost in the woods
Technology is making it more and more difficult to get lost. Right now, I’m here in my home in Florida. I could pull out my phone, type in any random address in, say, Washington state – the other end of the country. Roughly 3,000 miles away. And within a few seconds, I would have turn by turn audio directions that would enable me to drive directly to that address. I know, GPS isn’t always perfect, but it’s really an amazing example of technology. And usually it works so smoothly that we just take it for granted. But what if you’re on foot, and your phone’s battery dies? Now you have nothing to tell you which direction to go, and you have no way to contact anyone for help. That’s what happened to John. John told this story on the podcast about 7 years ago in one of the very early episodes. He was hiking in an area that he was not familiar with. And a hike in the deep woods that was only supposed to be a few hours turned into days. Fri, 24 Apr 2026 - 351 - 252: Blake was arrested for pot cookies
There’s a funny thing about being an American. I’ve seen this with some people I know, as well as some of the guests here on the podcast. Living in the United States, it’s easy to have the mindset that the way we do things is the way the rest of the world does things. Unless you travel to other countries regularly, and get exposed to other cultures, that’s kind of the default thought for a lot of people. An example of this is tipping. Here in the US, we tip service workers. In fact, I think the tipping culture has gotten way out of hand, but that’s a different story. But in other places around the world, they don’t expect a tip for good service. In fact, offering extra money for a job well done can be considered kind of an insult or even condescending. My conversation today is with Blake. He’s a US citizen, so he was accustomed to the American way of thinking about a lot of things. Like, the concept that marijuana is not serious drug. And the idea of being innocent until proven guilty. But while he was in South Korea, he discovered that they think very differently about these things. Fri, 10 Apr 2026 - 348 - 251: Marcy's husband wasn't the same
If your brain changes, are you still the same person? That was the question behind a 1991 movie titled Regarding Henry. In that film, Harrison Ford played the part of Henry Turner. Henry was a wealthy New York City lawyer. He was also narcissistic, uncaring, and even a little unethical sometimes. He got what he wanted and he didn’t care who was in the way. One night he stops into a convenience store and accidentally interrupts an armed robbery. Henry gets shot in the head, but somehow survives. But he has damage to his brain. As he recovers, he slowly emerges as someone very different than who he was before the shooting. He forges new, loving relationships with his wife and his daughter. And of course they love the “new” Henry. My guest today is Marcy. She’s a wife and a mother. She has first-hand experience with seeing someone change after a traumatic brain injury – it was her husband, Greg. He was not the same person. If you’d like to contact Marcy, she’s in the Facebook group – WhatWasThatLike.com/facebook. Tue, 31 Mar 2026 - 345 - 250: Margy did a hoarder cleanout
Today’s episode has a content warning for discussion of suicide. Have you ever seen pictures or video of a hoarder house, and just wondered, what is going on? I mean, everyone has a different tolerance level for clutter. But hoarding is not just an issue of having a messy living environment. It’s actually classified as a distinct mental illness. The American Psychiatric Association says hoarding is characterized by a persistent, intense inability to discard possessions – leading to significant clutter, distress, and impairment in daily living. My guest for this episode is one of my favorite people – my friend Margy. We’ve known each other for years through the podcast industry, and she actually told this story originally here on What Was That Like back in 2022. Lots of things have happened with Margy since then, so stick around til the end for an update from her. Margy was an adult when her dad died. She came back home and saw the job that had to be done, and she channeled her grief into energy. And what seemed like an impossible challenge didn’t defeat her – rather, it made her unstoppable. Fri, 27 Mar 2026 - 344 - 249: Elena's work jet crashed
For a lot of people, flying is a really scary thing. And that fear can come from a few different factors. You’ve heard stories about planes that have crashed (even though it’s rare). You’re gonna be in this metal tube a few miles above the ground. And you’re putting your life in the hands of people you don’t even know. Part of flight attendant training is learning how to handle a passenger who has anxiety about flying. If someone steps on to the plane and tells them, “Hey, I’m pretty nervous about this”, they have ways to deal with it. They need to keep that passenger comfortable, and everyone on the plane safe. One thing a fearful passenger can do is ask to meet the pilot. This might not always be possible, but in many cases the pilot is happy to meet a nervous flier and provide some reassurance. Then, a few minutes later when the plane is taking off, you can think “this feels a little scary, but I met the person who’s flying the plane, and they seemed to know what they’re doing”. But takeoff is just the first part – you still have to get back to earth. What if the plane is landing, and no one – not even the pilot – knows that anything is wrong... Until you hit the ground. Fri, 13 Mar 2026 - 341 - 248: Adam fell during a phone call
Sometimes, technology can almost seem like magic. That’s how I think sometimes about cell phones. I mean, you can just pull a little device out of your pocket, tap a couple of things on the screen, and suddenly you’re talking in real time to some other person, who can be anywhere in the world? I know we take this for granted now, but it’s pretty amazing. There was a little trick I used to do sometimes, with Skype. Remember Skype? Back in the day, it was pretty cool to be able to use your computer to actually make a phone call. Of course, now we do it all the time with Google Voice. But Skype used to be pretty cutting edge. Anyway, one of the features of having a Skype account was 3-way calling. You could have a 3-way conversation really easily. So what I would do is pull up the Skype app on my computer, and have my list of contacts on the screen. I would click on my dad’s name, so it would start dialing his phone number. Then I would click my brother’s name, and it would start dialing HIS phone number. They would both answer the phone, like “Hello?” and I would just stay silent and enjoy the confusion. They each knew their phone rang, and of course they recognized each other’s voices, but neither of them had made the call so they had no idea why their phones rang. It was always good for a laugh. But sometimes, a phone call can be traumatic. My guest today is Adam. He was enjoying some solo rock-climbing one day, and was on the phone with his roommate, Rachel. That phone call became one that neither of them will ever forget. Adam is on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/aaiaiaaoui/ This is Adam’s band, Birdnest - https://www.instagram.com/birdnest.music/ Full show notes and pictures for this episode are here: https://WhatWasThatLike.com/248 Graphics for this episode by Bob Bretz. Tue, 03 Mar 2026 - 339 - 247: Alyssa watched her abuser burn
If you’re in the Austin, Texas area – let’s meet up. I’ll be in Austin the second week of March – and this is 2026, for you listeners of the future – we’ll have another in-person Listener Meetup on March 11. This is where you can come and hang out with me and other podcast listeners, have a drink, ask a question, whatever. I’d love to get to know you! All of the details can be found in the What Was That Like Facebook group, at WhatWasThatLike.com/facebook. And now, on with today’s episode, which needs a content warning for discussion of suicide. Here in the US, 1 out of every 3 women have experienced some form of physical violence by an intimate partner. My guest in this episode is Alyssa. She WAS that 1 out of 3. This is a Flashback episode. Alyssa told this story on the podcast way back in episode 16, more than 7 years ago. Unfortunately, as sometimes happens, I was not able to get in touch with her recently for an update. Alyssa lives in Tennessee and she’s really into music. She’s a musician, a songwriter, and an audio engineer. Her boyfriend, Jared, was abusive to her - emotionally and physically – and police were actively planning to arrest him. But before that could happen, Jared decided he would take his own life. And he wanted to do it in a way that would be disturbing and traumatic for anyone nearby. Fri, 27 Feb 2026 - 338 - 246: Sarah's son can't talk about his pain
As parents, you want your child to be healthy and happy. And you’ll do anything to make that happen. But that’s not always easy when your child is autistic. Science and medicine has learned a lot about autism, but there’s still a lot of mystery around it as well. What causes it (if anything), how to treat it… there are lots of questions that are still unanswered. And a successful treatment protocol for one person might not work as well for another one. My guest today is Sarah. She and her husband, Brian, have a son named Devon, who has severe autism. Devon would have sudden behavior incidents that often turned violent, and he could hurt himself, or his parents, or his siblings. Of course, as his mother, Sarah wanted desperately to help him. But it got to the point where she didn’t know what to do. Then she found out about a hospital that could possibly help Devon. After years of frustration and exhaustion, there was maybe some hope. And with an adjustment in medication, she saw some progress with Devon. What horrified her was finding out what was actually happening at that hospital. This is the organization that Sarah mentioned as a resource: https://collaborateaba.com The Little Soul and the Sun: https://www.amazon.com/Little-Soul-Neale-Donald-Walsch/dp/1571740872/ref=sr_1_1 If you’d like to contact Sarah, she’s in the Facebook group: https://WhatWasThatLike.com/facebook Full show notes and pictures for this episode are here: https://WhatWasThatLike.com/246 Graphics for this episode by Bob Bretz. Fri, 13 Feb 2026 - 335 - 245: Honor encountered an angry hippo
Here on the podcast we’ve several episodes with guests who have told the story of being attacked by an animal. These include a grizzly bear, a monkey, a shark, a rattlesnake, a tiger, a pair of dogs, an alligator, and a swarm of yellow jackets. But we haven’t yet had a story about a hippo attack. Until today. My guest today is Honor. She was traveling throughout Africa and she learned about the list of animals in Africa that cause the most fatalities. Hippos are number TWO on that list, and number one may surprise you. She told me what it was in our conversation. Hippos look like they would just want to roll over and scratch their belly. But don’t be fooled. They are extremely territorial, and can get very angry. And, as Honor saw first-hand, they are also quite fast. Tue, 03 Feb 2026 - 333 - 244: Justin found his mom
Sometimes, there comes a moment in your life when everything changes. You might have a little warning ahead of time, or it might come as a complete surprise. It might be a surprise that makes your whole life better, or it could be news that’s devastating. We never know – that’s just how life works. Justin had a moment like that. He was adopted the day after he was born, so he never knew his birth mother. He had a wonderful childhood, and he loves his family, but he always wondered about the woman who actually gave birth to him. Then, that moment came – they found each other. Justin told this story on the podcast more than 7 years ago. And one of the things that I love about this episode is a surprise I had for him during our conversation. You’ll hear it right after the second ad break. I hope you love this story as much as I do. Fri, 30 Jan 2026 - 332 - 243: Scott woke up from a coma
I wonder if this ever happens to you. Maybe you’re visiting someone and you’re staying overnight. Or you’re on a trip and you’re staying in a hotel or an Airbnb. And that first time you wake up, you have a brief few seconds where you’re a little disoriented. Like, “Hey, where am I? This is not my bedroom. This is not my bed”. But then it comes back to you – oh yeah, I’m away from home right now. I would think it would be even worse if you woke up and realized you’re in a hospital bed. For the podcast, I typically don’t do stories that are mainly centered around the guest being in a coma. It’s an interesting concept for sure, but just the fact that someone was in a coma would make for a difficult episode. I mean, how can you tell a detailed story when you were asleep for most of it? Today we’re going to hear from Scott. He was in a coma for a while. And then he had that experience of trying to figure out “why am I in a hospital...what is going on”. But his story is not really about him being in a coma. It’s about what the doctor told him when he woke up. Fri, 16 Jan 2026 - 329 - 242: Jessica sensed disaster coming
Have you ever had a feeling of impending doom? Like you just knew something bad was about to happen? Quite a few years ago, I was in New York City. I went with a friend to a late comedy show, and when it was over we got on the subway to get back to the hotel. This was pretty late, like 2 am or maybe even later. We were on the train, waiting for the doors to close. Personally, I was feeling fine. But my friend, Teri, was more aware of our surroundings. There were a few other people on the train and she did not feel comfortable at all. She said that we needed to get off the train before the doors closed. So we did. I didn’t get it at the time. But Teri just had this bad feeling that something was about to happen and it was not going to turn out well for us. But whatever it was, we took a taxi instead and got back safely. My guest today is Jessica. She is an avid rock climber out in the Pacific Northwest. She was involved in setting up a climbing event for hundreds of people, and she just kept having this feeling that something was very wrong. And she was right. Tue, 06 Jan 2026 - 327 - 241: Victoria's dad kept a secret
Not everyone likes surprises. Personally, I love being surprised – as long as it’s a GOOD surprise. And even more than that, I love surprising people and just seeing their reaction. About 3-4 years ago, I got what I think is the biggest surprise of my life. At that time, my dad had been gone for about 6 or 7 years. And one night my mom invited all the family over for a game night at her place. This happens all the time, so nothing unusual. But while we were all there, she made an announcement that, at age 80, she was going to get married again. I never saw it coming. But it has worked out great. Jim and my dad were actually best friends for most of their lives. Jim’s wife had passed away a few years earlier, so… it really all made sense. And it made for a crazy and wonderful surprise for all of us. Today you’ll hear about a surprise that Victoria got one day, from a former neighbor. It was about her dad, and it was not a good surprise. Victoria told this story on the podcast about 4 years ago, and after our conversation you’ll hear an update on what has happened with her family – and her dad – since then. This episode contains discussion of child sexual assault. Listener discretion is advised. Graphics for this episode by Bob Bretz. Transcription was done by James Lai. Fri, 02 Jan 2026 - 326 - 240: The Listener Stories of 2025
Well here we are at the end of 2025. It’s been a crazy year in a lot of different ways. And it’s a tradition here for the What Was That Like podcast for the last episode of the year to be a collection of all of this year’s Listener Stories. For every main episode of the podcast, we end it with a story sent in by a listener. It can be something happy, sad, funny – just about anything – as long as it’s something interesting that happened to you. We limit these to around 5-10 minutes, and all you have to do is record it on your phone and email it to me at Scott@WhatWasThatLike.com So what we have here in this final episode of 2025 is over 3 hours of those listener stories from this past year. Keep in mind that some of these stories deal with sensitive topics such as suicide or other things that could be triggering for some listeners. Feel free to fast forward to the next story if you need to. And now, here are the Listener Stories of 2025. Fri, 19 Dec 2025 - 323 - 239: Dan slid over the edge
Mountain climbing is safer when you do it with a climbing partner. If you want to see something really crazy, something that might even bring up some anxiety as you watch it, check out the documentary called Free Solo. This is a National Geographic documentary about a young rock climber named Alex Honnold. His dream was to climb this 3000 foot rock called El Capitan, in Yosemite National Park. Just climbing it is a great achievement for most rock climbers. But Alex Honnold is not like most rock climbers. He wanted to do it without any ropes, and without any safety equipment. That’s what “free solo” climbing is. Alex planned and trained extensively for it. And he was successful. My guest today is Dan. Dan loves to climb. One day he was out with his friend and long-time climbing partner, Jim. It was a beautiful day and they were having a great time. That was the day that Dan learned that when you’re on the mountain, having a partner there with you can mean the difference between life and death. If you’d like to contact Dan, all of his contact details are at his website – danwenker.com Dan’s Instagram – agelesshiker_danwenker Dan’s book – Staying on Guard https://www.amazon.com/Staying-Guard-Spiritual-Encounter-Gratitude/dp/1636183557/ref=sr_1_1 Full show notes and pictures for this episode are here: https://WhatWasThatLike.com/239 Graphics for this episode by Bob Bretz. Monica was divorced, and now a single mom with two little kids. She wasn’t looking for a relationship. Kevin was a nice guy, and he’d never been married. When they first met, there was a chemistry between them, but Monica was reluctant. Fortunately, Kevin was persistent. This is their story, and it’s a good reminder for all of us – when you have someone you love, be sure to appreciate the time you have with them now. Because sometimes the unexpected can change everything. This is a Flashback episode. Monica told this story on the podcast more than four years ago. So hang around after our conversation to find out about how Monica and her kids are doing today. Fri, 05 Dec 2025 - 320 - 237: Mariela's pregnancy got complicated
There’s really something pretty amazing about giving birth. I mean, you are actually using your body to grow a whole new human, and then this new person comes into the world, and your whole life changes. For many people, being pregnant is a time filled with happy anticipation. You’ve probably heard people talk about this thing called the “pregnancy glow”, and it’s a real thing. In spite of the discomfort, and nausea, and unusual food cravings and everything else that sometimes comes with having a baby inside you, the thought of holding that brand new human in your arms – your child – that’s often the thing that can help you get through it. Mariela was pregnant. She and her husband, Stephen, were excited about growing their family. Then, partway through the pregnancy, things got complicated. Fri, 21 Nov 2025 - 317 - 236: Hannah jumped into the lake
Sometimes it can be pretty amazing how one small decision can have a huge impact. Mike Jaffe knows about that. Mike was usually on his way to work in the morning when his wife, Sabrina, woke up their one year old daughter. He was also on his way home from work when Sabrina was putting her to bed. But one Monday morning, he decided that the next day, Tuesday, he would go in to work late so that they could all have breakfast together. On Tuesday morning, he was having second thoughts. This job was important to him. But he decided to stick to the plan, and they had a nice family breakfast together that morning. That breakfast saved Mike’s life. He worked on the 96th floor of the World Trade Center’s north tower, and that Tuesday morning breakfast was September 11, 2001. Hundreds of his colleagues were already at work and did not survive. My guest today is Hannah. She was driving one day over a small bridge, on her way to meet someone, and just by chance looked over at the water below. That quick glance ended up having a life-changing impact. Tue, 11 Nov 2025 - 315 - 235: Jen was held up at work
A lot of weird things can happen when you work in a retail store. You can ask anyone who’s worked retail for a while, and they will have some stories. My daughter worked at a popular clothing store for a while here in Florida. She worked mostly around the fitting rooms. And she was constantly amazed – and annoyed – at the things people would do in those little rooms where you try on clothes. Oh yeah, some people would just leave the place a big mess. But there were other customers who took it a step further – and whatever you’re imagining right now, you’re probably correct. But what if you’re working in a retail environment, just a regular day, and you turn around and see a man with a gun pointed at you? How do you think you would react? Jen knows exactly what she would do, because that’s exactly what happened to her one day at work. Jen told this story on the podcast more than 3 years ago, which means this is a Flashback episode. After you hear her story, I’ll play a brief conversation I had with Jen just recently about what’s going on with her these days. Tue, 04 Nov 2025 - 313 - 234: Tessi was raped in the rain
When you meet someone for the first time, do you trust them by default? I like to think that I just assume the best of a stranger, until they prove they aren’t worthy of my trust. But that can be dangerous in some cases. There were a couple of people who were partners in a business and they were looking for office space to rent. They searched online and found an ad for what looked like the perfect space. They met the owner there and he showed them around. They paid him first and last month’s rent using Venmo, and planned to sign the lease agreement the next day. They got the keys and moved everything in. But they never heard from the owner again. After a couple of days they still weren’t able to reach him. Then the next day, the ACTUAL owner showed up, asking who they were any why they had moved all their stuff in, since he was planning to lease the space out soon. The original fake owner was a disgruntled employee. He made out with a few thousand dollars, handed over the keys, and disappeared. But that whole scam hinged on trust. My guest today is Tessi. She lives in Montana but was traveling outside the US. She met a young man and she didn’t have any specific reason to not trust him. But he was not someone to be trusted. Mon, 20 Oct 2025 - 309 - 233: Lemon was forced to decide
Sometimes you find yourself in a situation that you didn’t ever expect, and you are faced with a decision that you never thought you’d have to make. Joe was an EMT in New York. He had just finished his evening shift, and he did what he always did after leaving work. He stopped by the local Dunkin’ Donuts for his regular nightly coffee. But this time was a little different – he happened to be carrying his newly acquired carbon monoxide detector with him. When he entered the store, that detector started sounding an alarm. But Joe was skeptical. There was only one employee working at this late hour, and Joe asked her if she felt okay. The donut worker said she felt fine, so Joe thought that the detector might be malfunctioning. And he could have just forgotten about it at that point. But he made the decision to double check. He reset that alarm, and got permission to go back and inspect the area near the ovens. Sure enough, this time the detector confirmed dangerous levels of carbon monoxide – and it was all throughout the store. Joe quickly evacuated the premises and contacted the proper authorities. The decision he made, just on instinct, probably saved the life of that employee. My guest today is Lemon – yes, just like the fruit. And you’ll hear how she got that nickname. Lemon was suddenly and unexpectedly put in a place of making a life-changing decision. And she had to do that while she was at home, and her house was on fire. Tue, 14 Oct 2025 - 307 - 232: Lesli was saved by a neighbor
You and I make decisions, all day every day. But have you ever thought about being able to have a choice about how you die? I mean, most people would probably prefer a method that’s quick and painless, so I guess we might want to have some say in the matter. But being put in that position of having to actually choose – in the moment – is not something that happens very often. But that’s the situation Lesli was in. This is a Flashback episode, and Lesli told this story on the podcast about five years ago. I wasn’t able to get in touch with her for an update conversation, but what you’re about to hear is a super crazy story of what happened to her in Nashville. And how her neighbor, Bill, came to her rescue without a moment to spare. Fri, 10 Oct 2025 - 306 - 231: Tina escaped the exploding batteries
Have you ever been awakened in the middle of the night because something terrible was happening? It’s definitely not a pleasant way to wake up. This happened to a 27 year old man named Nick, and he wrote about it on social media – I was sleeping at my girlfriend’s house last night. Usually we pass out around midnight, but last night we didn’t get to sleep until around 1:30 or so. It was around 3am when I woke up and swear I saw someone’s head peeking in & staring at us through the bedroom door. Adrenaline shot through my entire body. I went into complete fight mode - I got up and charged towards the door, with my loyal, badass dog following right behind me. As I ran out and looked around, I didn’t see anyone. My dog and I probably looked around for a solid minute until I finally snapped out of it and realized it had just been a dream. And the fact my dog wasn’t going ape shit brought me out of it as well. The thing is, even if it turns out to be nothing, for most people it’s still going to be difficult to get back to sleep. My guest today is Tina – she’s a wife, and a mother. She was awakened in the middle of the night, and it wasn’t a false alarm. What woke her up was an ACTUAL alarm. Tina’s house was on fire. If you’d like to contact Tina, she’s in the WWTL Facebook group. Full show notes and pictures for this episode are here: https://WhatWasThatLike.com/231 Graphics for this episode by Bob Bretz. Tue, 30 Sep 2025 - 304 - To Build a Fire
When I started this podcast more than seven years ago, the primary factor was based on just one fundamental concept: the impact of a good story. For each What Was That Like main episode, you hear a story. The guest is telling the story of what happened. Many of the stories are traumatic, many include loss and grief, and there are those that are happy as well. Even the heavy stories often end on a positive note. But the common factor is that they are all things that actually happened. The guest is talking about an actual thing that they experienced. The story you’re about to hear in this episode would fall into the category of fiction. In a recent episode, my guest was David, and he was talking about being in the extremely cold north, and not being able to find a cabin that he knew was nearby. That one is episode 225, called “David couldn’t find the cabin”. In that episode, I opened with the first few lines from one of my favorite short stories – To Build A Fire, by Jack London. Reading just that short section made me want to read the full story again. And that’s what I’m doing in today’s episode. Jack London is my favorite author, and I love this story because he really puts us in the mind of this man, and his thought process, and his range of emotions. So we’ll first have a quick break for a couple of sponsors who make the show possible, and then we’ll get into this story. Please enjoy this amazing work by Jack London… To Build A Fire. Fri, 26 Sep 2025 - 303 - 230: Vanessa lost her voice
How scary would it be, if you suddenly lost your ability to speak? There was a story in the news about a man named Peter. When Peter was 73 years old, he had a stroke. He survived the stroke, but he found that he could no longer speak. And it looked like that condition was permanent, because after 4 years, he still had no voice. But then, Peter was on vacation with his wife Carol, and their son Jonathan. And one day Peter just woke up, and he was able to speak again. He just started speaking, and Carol said, “Peter, you’re speaking!” Then she said, “Don’t stop, keep talking! It might go away again!” Jonathan was in the next room and heard two people having a conversation and came rushing in wondering what was happening. They all started crying and laughing at the same time. It was a very emotional time because it had been so long. Later that day, Peter found out that he had had ANOTHER stroke. They wondered if whatever damage the first stroke had done, was now UNdone by the second stroke. Doctors were doubtful of that, but even they didn’t have an explanation. Peter is just happy to have his voice back. My guest today is Vanessa. She experienced something similar – some kind of sudden, mysterious condition that showed up with multiple symptoms, including taking away her voice. What makes Vanessa’s story even more fascinating is her career – she’s a speech therapist. Tue, 16 Sep 2025 - 301 - 229: Raw Audio unlocked
I was traveling recently, and I got in this Uber and started talking to the driver, and when I heard his voice I said, “Kevin, you need to have a podcast!” I don’t know if he’ll do that, but he did graciously agree to record that quick opener for me, just before I got out of his car. 438 – keep that number in your head and I’ll come back to it in a minute. By now you have probably figured out, this episode is not going to be the typical type of episode where I talk with someone who has been through some kind of unusual situation. I’ll be back here in a week with one of those stories. But today, you’re about to hear an episode from the Raw Audio series. You may have heard me talk about the Raw Audio episodes in the past, but you might not have actually heard one of these episodes unless you’re a paid supporter of the podcast – which many of you are, and I appreciate that. When you sign up to support the show, one of the benefits of that subscription is the bonus content – these are the Raw Audio episodes. They’re called that because they are truly raw, and real life. You’re gonna hear actual 911 emergency calls, and the story that goes with that call. This is about as authentic as it gets. And you might notice that throughout this episode, you will not hear any ad breaks. The Raw Audio episodes never have ads. And not just that, but as a paid supporter, you won’t hear any ads on ANY of the What Was That Like episodes. If you enjoy this episode, I invite you to sign up to support the show. Remember that number I mentioned a minute ago, 438? That’s how many listeners are already supporters. They subscribe for a few dollars each month, so they get to hear ALL the Raw Audio episodes and never any ads. And right now there are 52 Raw Audio episodes live and ready for you to binge when you sign up and become supporter number 439. After you hear these three stories, I’ll come back in to let you know exactly how you can subscribe, because there are a few different ways you can do it, depending on what kind of phone you have and what app you use to listen to podcasts. It’s really simple though. But for now, please enjoy this ad-free episode of Raw Audio. Graphics for this episode by Bob Bretz. Transcription was done by James Lai. Fri, 12 Sep 2025 - 300 - 228: September 11 hero Betty Ong
Do you know, with certainty, how you would react in a time of extreme stress or crisis? As a 22 year old woman in San Francisco, Betty had not yet decided on a career path. So, while she was figuring out what she wanted to do, she worked at the factory owned by her parents. The factory produced beef jerky. It wasn’t really her dream job, but it kept her busy at the time, and she also felt good about helping her parents in their business. One day, Betty’s workplace suddenly became very dangerous. Some people came in to rob the family business – and they were waving guns around. Betty was out front, and one of the first employees to come in contact with the robbers. She never panicked, even as one of the men held a gun to her head. Instead, she calmly called her dad, who was in the back, and said, “Dad, we’re being robbed”. The robbers got some money and left, and no one was physically injured. Betty’s nerves of steel would come into play again years later. She was one of the flight attendants on American Airlines flight 11, on September 11, 2001. Today you’ll hear her voice, and you’ll learn why the 9/11 Commission declared Betty a hero. Fri, 29 Aug 2025 - 297 - 227: Bathroom emergencies
Quite a few of the episodes here on What Was That Like involve emergencies. Today we’re talking about a different kind of emergency. If you’re new to the podcast, this is definitely not a typical episode. You might want to look through some of the past episode titles and pick one out that looks interesting. But today is a little different. I’m in Dallas this week, hanging out with a bunch of my podcasting friends, so for this episode we’re kind of taking a break from the normal interview format. A little bit of background. About 10 years ago, I was creating and hosting a different podcast. It was called Ultrafinishers. Each episode, I would interview a runner who had just finished their first ultramarathon. An ultramarathon is any race longer than a marathon, which is 26.2 miles. So an ultra usually ranges from 50k, which is a little more than 30 miles, up to 100 miles. Some are even longer than that. But for one of those episodes, I asked people to call in and tell their story of the nightmare that just about every runner has had to deal with – you’re out on a run, and you have to poop, and there’s no bathroom in sight. It’s not a fun thing when it’s happening – but as it turns out, it’s pretty entertaining to hear about when it happens to other people. So you’re about to hear a bunch of my ultra running friends from 10 years ago, telling their poop stories. And all of these were called in on a phone line, so the audio quality is not quite what you’d expect on a modern podcast. But it’s listenable. And don’t worry – I have lots of crazy What Was That Like stories in the pipeline, and I’m looking forward to bringing those to you in the near future. Graphics for this episode by Bob Bretz. Tue, 19 Aug 2025 - 295 - 226: Bill's daughter was murdered
Sometimes, you see a phone call coming in and you just know that something bad has happened. I remember back several years ago, when my dad was still alive. He was in pretty poor health. He could still walk around, sort of, but it was with a walker, and it was very slowly. I’m the oldest of three sons, and of the three, I live the closest. It’s only about a 5 or 6 minute drive for me to get to my parents’ place, so if something happened, I’d be the one to get that call. Lots of times my phone would ring, and it would be my mom calling, quite upset and worried, because my dad had fallen and she couldn’t get him up. And you know, when a call comes in the middle of the night, it’s almost never going to be good news. We’ve had a few of those as well. For my guest today, Bill, life was good. He and his wife had two children – David, in high school, and Kristin, who had just graduated from college and was about to start a career. But then, Bill got a phone call. It was from a woman who identified herself as a police detective. And she was calling with news about Bill’s daughter. Bill told this story on the podcast a little over 3 years ago, and it’s one of the episodes that had a big impact on people. Some of the elements of this story are just incredible. And you’ll also hear a recent conversation I had with Bill, about what’s happened since then. Fri, 15 Aug 2025 - 294 - 225: David couldn't find the cabin
My favorite author is Jack London. His style of writing paints a very vivid picture in my mind. As I read his stories, it feels like I’m right there in the middle of it. One of his most well-known works is titled To Build A Fire. This is the opening paragraph of that story. Day had dawned cold and gray when the man turned aside from the main Yukon trail. He climbed the high earth-bank where a little-traveled trail led east through the pine forest. It was a high bank, and he paused to breathe at the top. He excused the act to himself by looking at his watch. It was nine o’clock in the morning. There was no sun or promise of sun, although there was not a cloud in the sky. It was a clear day. However, there seemed to be an indescribable darkness over the face of things. That was because the sun was absent from the sky. This fact did not worry the man. He was not alarmed by the lack of sun. It had been days since he had seen the sun. There’s something about the quiet, dark, biting cold of northern Canada that really fascinates me. I’ve lived in cold climates, but nothing like that. When the outside temperature gets to be well below zero, the constant thought is just what you have to do in order to survive. My guest today is David. He and his partner in this adventure, Scott, dreamed of spending time in those conditions. But what they encountered just in the first few days had them - from one hour to the next – wondering, what else could go wrong? Fri, 01 Aug 2025 - 291 - 224: Naseem was run over 3 times
If you have children, you’ve probably thought at some point, “Am I a good parent?” It’s natural to question our own abilities sometimes. Do I spend enough time with my kids? Do they feel safe? Do they feel loved? Are they comfortable talking with me about anything that’s going on in their life? My kids are adults now. When I think back to when they were growing up, there are things I would have done differently if I knew back then what I know now. But that’s not really fair though. I know I did the best I could at the time. And they still turned out to be great adults and I’m really proud of them. My guest today is Naseem. She has 3 kids. And there was a time when she found herself wondering about how she was doing as a parent. Wondering if her children knew how much she loved them. It’s interesting the thoughts that come into your head, when you’re being run over by a car. Tue, 22 Jul 2025 - 289 - 223: Ross was shot while sleeping
In an ideal world, children should be able to trust their parents. After all, it’s the grown-ups in the family who are responsible for the kids. No child should ever have to worry about safety when mom and dad are around for protection - in an ideal world. That’s the world Ross thought he was living in when he was 8 years old, with his older brother Ryan, who was 10. They were happy kids with no reason to be afraid. Until one night at their home in Charlotte, North Carolina, when his mother told his father she wanted a divorce. That’s when something snapped in Ross’s dad’s mind, and he got a gun, and forever changed the history of their family. This is a Flashback episode. Ross was 21 when we first had this conversation, and he’s permanently blind. At the time, he was training to swim in the Summer 2020 Paralympics in Tokyo. Now he’s 27, and I spoke with him again recently, so you’ll be able to learn what’s happened in his life since he originally appeared on the podcast, and what his plans are for the future. Ross is a pretty amazing young man and I think you’ll enjoy this episode. Fri, 18 Jul 2025 - 288 - 222: Scott was locked up in a foreign jail
As human beings, we are often very protective of our own sense of personal justice – and injustice. When I was a child, I had a teacher who – to me – seemed very unfair. If one of the kids in the class did something like write a bad word on the chalkboard, she would ask the entire class who did it. She really did her best to find the culprit, and carry out punishment. But sometimes she just couldn’t figure it out. No one would admit it, and there wasn’t enough evidence to pin it on any specific student. So her solution was – the whole class loses recess for the whole day. Definitely not fair! It always bugged me when that happened – I was being punished even though I hadn’t done anything wrong. My guest today, Scott, was also a victim of injustice, but on a much larger scale. He was charged with a crime that he didn’t commit, and was held in a foreign jail for far too long. This is one of those stories where you just can’t predict what’s coming next. And if you’re an American, it might just make you think twice before traveling outside the US. Fri, 04 Jul 2025 - 285 - 221: Brandon is a 911 dispatcher
What do heart attacks, car accidents, and murder usually have in common? Most of the time, when any of these things happen, someone calls 911. It’s one of the most reliable things we have – whenever there’s any kind of emergency, here in the US, we know we can just pick up any phone and dial 911 and get help. Even if it’s a phone that has no service. This is an episode where I talk with someone who has an unusual job. My guest today is Brandon, and he’s been a 911 dispatcher in Nashville, Tennessee for 25 years. After taking emergency calls for all that time, he’s heard just about everything. And today we’ll get the inside scoop on what this job is really like. Also, a content warning – one of the things discussed during our conversation is when calls come in from people who are suicidal. So please, enjoy my conversation with Brandon.
