Party at Paul's place. Anna says she has almost finished her studies and will soon be a teacher at a primary school. Paul's family is super proud of him and his blog has gained so much traction that he was even able to boost the business of Tim's bicycle repair shop with it. Meili's German has gotten much better. She says she would be living in China now if it wasn't for Paul's help. Tim says he wouldn't have met Meili at the Oktoberfest without Paul inviting everybody. Tim and Meili announce that they are going to get engaged. Paul's friends come out with the uncomfortable truth about his taste: his wallpaper is very ugly. Laura says that Fritz is on trial. He's is no longer a policeman. Fritz's "neighbor" on Sylt, the policeman, told her that the best amateur detective in all of Germany must be Paul. Paul reveals the big news: A small publisher wants to bring out his blog as a book. That means he's now a successful writer with a contract. His book will be called "the betrayal". He's thinking about maybe even doing a podcast...

It's Saturday, the day of the party, and Paul is visiting his parents. They’re getting along better since Father is overcoming his addiction to gambling and mobile games. He now compensates with sports and chess. Laura calls. She reveals why she has been so strange lately: Fritz's "neighbor" on the island of Sylt doesn't even live there. He is a friend of Laura and also a cop. He was investigating Fritz for corruption. That's why she was so interested in the blog article about him. The investigation was still ongoing. And that's why Paul shouldn't report him. Everything should be as normal as possible so that he can be caught red-handed. Today he’s been arrested when he wanted to pay for something with the stolen money he took from the Großkauf thieves from lesson 6. So, Paul never ends up reporting Fritz to the police, but his career is over anyway. Paul writes in the group chat that he has a surprise to announce at the party. What surprise is he talking about?

Paul has the painting! During the war, the lady and her husband were secretly listening to forbidden news - right in front of the painting (and he proposed to her there). It was the memories of her husband that she didn't want to lose. So she didn’t want to give it away, even though she doesn’t quite like it. It was also in front of this painting that he told her he wants to surrender. That's why she was so sure. Pauls work and blog are going well. He's considering writing a book, given that many people voted for it. But it still bothers him that he doesn’t know why Laura took Fritz's side. Mom calls: She is proud of him. And of his father because he's finally doing a gambling/gaming addiction therapy. Paul and his friends plan to celebrate. They change the date for Laura since she is busy with somehing very important that came up. She makes a secret of what this important thing is. And she doesn't want to reveal it until Saturday... Laura was overly interested in the blog article about Fritz, didn’t want Paul to report him even though she dislikes him, and now it’s even a secret what she’s busy with on Friday. What’s with all the secrecy?

Paul and the grandson talk secretly: the widow had actually wanted to throw the painting away at one point. But she just can't let go of the old story and memories. Both grandpas were in the Hitler Youth and in the SA together. They really were Nazis. Paul is shocked. Paul’s grandpa must have learned the truth about what the Nazis did when he was a prisoner of war. He probably abandoned his political convictions there. But the grandson says his own grandpa was in Russia. And it was there that he began to no longer believe in the cause. That is what his grandpa told his grandmother while he was on home leave. That was three months before the letter came. In that last letter from the government, it was stated that he heroically tried to incite the enemy to surrender by waving a white handkerchief - and died in the process. But she always knew that he really only wanted to surrender himself. Paul asks how she could be so sure, and what the story has to do with the painting, anyway. That’s when the widow, who had been listening in on their conversation, speaks up. Finally, she realizes that withholding the painting won't bring her husband back either. She wants to give Paul the painting and tell him the story. How come the widow was so sure that Grandpa's friend just wanted to surrender? And what does the story have to do with the painting?

So she agrees to give him the painting, even though it didn't look like it at first. But then she suddenly becomes sentimental. She says it was in front of this painting that her now deceased husband had asked her if she wanted to marry him - three months before the letter came. She cries and is no longer willing give the painting away. Paul and her grandson talk to her, but she argues that the painting is the only thing she still has from her husband. She burned the letter. Paul wants to know: What letter, anyways? What letter is the widow talking about - and why did she burn it? Will Paul have to disappoint his family and relatives, and return without the painting?

And again, he has an argument because he had bet on a sports team's loss - but the bookmaker doesn't give him anything since it was a disqualification. That doesn't count as a loss. In Paul’s latest blog article, he had an adventure with a subway ticket inspector on his way back from Grandpa's apartment. At home, he realized that the page he found fits the book. It is the lost page with the missing part of the old address! That's the place where Grandpa's friend and the painting used to be! The page probably fell out again at some point after Grandpa glued it in. In the blog comments, Paul's readers say they want to buy his story as a book, but he's not interested in writing one. He gets a message from Laura: She doesn't like Fritz at all, and Paul should know that. He aks, if that’s so, why does she take Fritz's side? And then he thinks about the painting again: He has the old address of the hiding place now. But how can he find the new address? Grandpa said Paul’s father had helped him with his smartphone despite being banned from using one. So Dad probably knows which app Grandpa wanted to use to find out the new address - but will he admit that? Perhaps not, given that Paul isn’t even supposed to know that he helped him. But he thinks he should at least try and dials his number. Will Paul’s dad help him and thus admit having used a smartphone despite being banned from using one? Why does Laura take Fritz's side even though she doesn't like him at all?

Paul helps his parents to clear Grandpa's apartment. While he and his mom are busy, his dad is secretly looking for Grandpa's smartphone. He finds it but mom sees this. She angrily takes it away from him because dad is banned from using smartphones. He is addicted to mobile games and could become the way he used to be. She definitely doesn't want that again! Father gets mad and says those days are over. But where has he been going every night for the last four days, if that’s the case? The people in the dance club are already gossipping. Paul comes back and they both play friendly so that he doesn't notice anything. Laura writes him not to report Fritz to the police. Paul wonders why she is on his side now. Does she like him? His thoughts are interrupted by finding a single page in Grandpa's room. He thinks it's the page from his book and immediately runs home with the page his hands. Why does Laura suddenly seem to like Fritz? Is the page Paul found really the lost page from the book?

Paul is depressed and regrets that he couldn't be there for Grandpa in the end. His work is also not going well since he is out of ideas. When Laura hears that he uploaded his Sylt adventure today, she is a little too interested in the new blog post, especially since she already knows the whole story. His blog is now super popular, but that doesn't cheer him up: Grandpa would have loved to look for the painting. But now he and the page are gone, which leaves Paul with no clue about where to find it. Tim complains about his employee and partner at his workshop. Laura remembers that Fritz, too, had a workshop and a partner. He betrayed also him, then ignored him and then used an excuse with a burnt cell phone - the same excuse he gave Paul. Fritz is ruthless, which is why he had also drawn suspicion on Anna by telling Paul about her previous conviction. Noticing how he has been tricked again, Paul is very angry and wants to report Fritz to the police. And he has proof: he had used his phone to make a sound recording of their last conversation on Sylt. Will he really report Fritz and thus put his police career in danger? Why is Laura suddenly so overly interested in the blog post about Sylt even though she already knows everything?

Paul is back in Munich, riding his bike to Grandpa's apartment. He has the book, but without the important page. His parents are already there. They're clearing all the rooms because he has died. That is why Paul’s mother was so strange on the phone when he was on Sylt. The call wasn't dropped due to bad reception - she hung up because she was crying. When Grandpa's condition got worse and she heard that Paul was on Sylt, she knew he couldn't come back that same day and see him one last time. But knowing that he was going to realize his dream of finding the book and the painting made Grandpa happy in the end. Paul’s father reveals that Fritz's theft is partly to blame for his death. Paul’s parents don't know where the missing page is and stroll down memory lane with his old photos. That's when Paul arrives at the apartment, thinking he is still alive... He never gets the opportunity to normalize his relationship with him, and ask him about the missing page with the important info. What will happen with regard to the missing page and the painting?

Accusations, reasons, excuses & subjunctive II with hätte.

At the party, Fritz hid the book under his sweater and took it away. That actually saved it from falling off the balcony, he says. When Paul upset everybody there was no chance to give it back secretly. And the option to admit that he was the one who had the book without losing his face was gone, too. So he handed the book over to the caretaker who's doing the lost-and-found for Paul's apartment building. But that was already 3 weeks ago. That's why he's so shocked that Paul doesn't have it back yet. Fritz thought Paul would surely assume that it had fallen down and ask the caretaker if someone found it. And he thought that the caretaker probably told him it was Fritz who gave him the book. That - and the fact that he is together with Paul’s ex-girlfriend - is the reason why he isn't surprised that Paul is angry at him. He shows him his phone and SIM card: They’re burnt. It looks like Fritz’s electronics really got wet in a rain. And in Berlin, Fritz was apparently on the phone all the time because he bragged to his new girlfriend about "his" new holiday home - which actually belongs to his uncle. Paul calls Anna. She goes to the caretaker and gets the book. He is very happy, but the glued-in page with the important info is missing. Without it, Grandpa won't be able to find the new address of the hiding place of the painting. Fritz says he doesn't have it, and stays in denial till the end: "I didn't do anything wrong." The book is back, but what will Grandpa say about the missing page and the important info being lost?

Paul confronts Fritz, who does not apologize, but justifies his behavior instead: His new girl is Paul’s ex girlfriend, and he thought Paul would mind. So he didn't tell him. He blocked his facebook posts for all of his friends because it was supposed to be a surprise that he caught the Großkauf thieves, got the promotion, the vacation, and the holiday home. But he forgot that Meili is also on facebook and can see his posts. Since he was late for Paul’s party, he didn’t hear him say the book is valuable. And he just „borrowed“ it for his new girl. Later he wanted to give it back. But then Paul made a big deal about it and upset everybody. So he wanted to have another party to get a chance to secretly put it back. But there were no more parties, soe he tried to visit Paul to put it back. But he came and stood in front of closed doors. Fritz says both his phone and SIM card are broken because they got wet in a rain. He couldn't get in touch and didn’t mean to ignore him. He has no phone numbers, no logins for social media and messengers, and no access to e-mail. Paul wants to know where his book is. Fritz is shocked to hear that he doesn't already have it. Why is Fritz so shocked and thinks Paul already has the book? If he thinks Paul already has the book, why wasn’t he surprised that he is still mad at him?

Paul thinks about his situation: he doesn't get any unemployment benefits anymore because he’s now able to make a living as a freelancer. Fortunately, his laptop and cell phone survived yesterday's rain thanks to a plastic bag. He has already checked out of the hotel room. And he has been looking for Fritz for five hours today - with no success. He realizes that he has to give up the search. Unfortunately he will have to disappoint Grandpa. Maybe he'll never talk to Paul again. Laura writes: She has read the entire story in the blog now, and is no longer angry. Actually, she can understand Paul. She, too, was unfair to him in the beginning when she ghosted him. At this moment, he overhears a man’s voice in the distance. Loud complains about mowing the lawn on a Sunday. He notices that there is also a red BMW with Munich license plates in front of a garage nearby. He sees the man's neighbor who has an eye-catching tattoo. And then he notices that the man is Fritz! It's his car that is parked in front of the garage - apparently he doesn't have a second garage door opener. What will happen when Paul confronts Fritz?

It's getting late and bad weather is coming. Paul's rain jacket was in the backpack which he lost. He sees a clothes shop, but it closed 5 minutes ago. He has been looking for Fritz for two hours today. Now the e-scooter battery is almost empty. Paul sees another red BMW, but is disappointed again - it's not Fritz's car. He's hungry and still doesn't have a hotel room. He gets a message from Laura: She wanted to call him, but that didn't work. Is he ignoring her? Paul had told her to read his blog to soften the unpleasant news for her. Unfortunately for Paul, it seems like she only read the beginning where he was just dating her because he needed information. She's very angry! It starts to rain and Paul accelerates, because he wants to find a hotel fast. That's when the e-scooter battery dies. He gets soaked. Paul arrives at the train station in Westerland on the island of Sylt. He loses his backpack and unsuccessfully tries to get help in the lost-and-found office. He is desperate because the garage opener is in it, and he needs it to find Fritz's garage. He wants to give up, but then it occurs to him: Without his garage opener, Fritz has to park outside. In that case, Paul would be able to see his red BMW parked outside. Paul's mother calls, but the cell phone reception is poor on the island. She already tried to call him three times today. He tells her that he is looking for Fritz and the book on Sylt. She says she just wanted to tell him that she is proud of him for telling Grandpa the truth. Then the call is dropped due to bad reception. Paul sees a red BMW, but it's not Fritz’s car. He borrows an e-scooter to look for him. Will Paul be able to find Fritz without the garage opener by looking for his red BMW parked outside? Or has Fritz found a way to park inside his garage, making Paul's search pointless?

Working online has become a good income source for Paul. He reads some blog comments during the train ride to Sylt: Among other things, people write that at first Paul only took advantage of Laura as a source of information. He really likes her, and he thinks he will lose her if he tells her that at the beginning he only used her to get information from her. But because people already know the truth, she will find out sooner or later. He figures he has to tell her, but how? How can he soften the news for her that at first he only dated her because he needed information?

Fritz's house is surely close to the garage. And he has a red BMW - there are certainly not many cars like this on the island. Then Laura writes Paul. Her Oktoberfest police operation is now over and she is free. She wants to know if Paul has time. Paul doesn't know what to do: He has no time, but he can't tell her why he has no time because that would shurely make her angry. Will Paul find Fritz on the island? Right when Paul intends to turn off his phone, Grandpa calls. Despite the annoyed moviegoers, he doesn't have the heart to cut off the phone conversation with him. Grandpa found out how to find the new address of the hiding place of the painting. But for that he needs the book and the information written in it! Paul's father had helped Grandpa with the research despite being banned from using a smartphone. That’s how he was able to find out that the book nowadays has an extremely high value, too. Paul is at home, creating online profiles for freelancer apps. He’s been writing his new blog for 2 days. Grandpa calls him and explains that he never found the painting because the address of the hiding place that was written in the book was no longer correct after the war. Also, everything looked different due to the reconstruction of Germany. He then glued the page back into the book, which was not valuable at that time. You can't find the painting with the address in the book, but today it's very valuable to Grandpa because it was the last present from his father before he died. Grandpa risked East German prison for this book. And it's vaulable because it turns out that it is the only remaining original edition of this book today. When he became forgetful, he and Paul's father gave it to Paul to be on the safe side since Paul loves books. But they were bitterly disappointed when it got lost. Paul calms him down and reminds him that they had never told him about all this. He sends him a link to his new blog to which Grandpa had encouraged him. Grandpa reads some comments and can't believe what is written there. What is it that is so incredible in the comments? Why did Fritz keep quiet about the fact that he caught the Großkauf thieves? And why didn’t he tell anybody about his promotion? Why did he always want to party, even though Paul was desperate about the loss of the book? How did he want to help when he got angy because he went to Paul's appartment, but Paul wasn't there?

Paul boosts Grandpa's spirits with coffee and updates him on his search for the book. But because he gets many rejections for his job applications, he feels hopeless. Grandpa empathizes with him and suggests that he should start writing, even without a formal writing job. So Paul decides to work on freelancer websites and to create a blog featuring the story about Fritz. Grandpa finally reveals the story behind the book: it holds the secret to a forbidden painting that belonged to his father during the war. To safe it from being burned by the Nazis, Grandpa's father wrote his name on the back and hid it at a friend's house. Then he wrote the address of the hiding place in the book. Unfortunately, both Grandpa's father and his friend died in the war. After the war, the painting was no longer forbidden and Grandpa wanted to find it. But there was the GDR and now the book with the address of the hiding place was forbidden. So he didn't want to carry it around and ripped the page with the address out of the book. Then he went off in search of the painting. What happened on Grandpa's search for the painting? Why is the book so important even though the page with the address of the hiding place is missing?

Make a decision based on simple job descriptions & sum-up: all dative and accusative prepositions and their contractions.

It turns out that Fritz had a girlfriend the whole time. On the trip to Berlin he has always been on the phone and he also mentioned a garden. But Fritz's apartment doesn’t have a garden! Paul shows the garage door opener with the broken sticker to his friends. Tim says it might not be broken. The form of the sticker could represent a lake. Grandpa calls and Paul promises to visit him tomorrow. And he wonders if Laura was just being polite on their date because she hasn't answered him yet. Will grandpa want to see the book tomorrow? Paul visits Grandpa. And he asks his friends in the group chat about Fritz. But he kept everything as a secret. So they don't know anything. And they are still angry at Paul. It seems it’s Fritz who has the book. Paul cannot confess to Grandpa that it’s gone because he is the last person Paul still has. Grandpa almost remembers the book, but Paul distracts him by asking him about the past: As a child, Grandpa thought playing war was great, but later not so much, because he only survived the real war by luck. Paul is also looking for Fritz's vacation posts on Facebook. With the help of the group, he finds out that Fritz blocked everyone from seeing them - except for Meili. A colleague wrote Fritz has just been promoted. Paul’s friends begin to understand his side a bit better now and he tries to get Meili to find out more. Grandpa almost remembered the book. Can Paul prevent that? Will Meili find out more about Fritz?

Paul wants to visit Fritz at the police station and report the theft, but he is not there. He is the new head of the theft department and is currently on vacation. That seems to be something that Fritz has been hiding. Does he have the book? If so, then he would become aware of the report. Therefore, Paul doesn't file charges. He gets a message from his mom: His dad is addicted to mobile phone games, and he now only has an old Nokia phone. He can’t be blamed that Paul lost his job because he can no longer receive WhatsApp messages. Apparently she has given him a smartphone ban. So that's what she was trying to tell him on the phone in Berlin when she said Father has problems. Paul is desperate. Fritz is the new head of the theft department? Why? For what reason does he keep that as a secret? And he is on vacation now? Where? For how long? Why is he so mysterious?

Paul counters: They don't help, and they didn't even try to warn him of his mistake. Accidentally sending the message for his boss to his dad has cost Paul his job. His mother becomes remorseful. She says she has to explain something to Paul. His father interrupts because he wants to prevent that. They argue and annoy Paul. So he hangs up. Restructure the workforce & separable verbs & sentence structure.

Paul is getting fired. He wasn’t aware that he didn’t report his illness to his boss. Instead, he accidentally sent the message to his dad - who didn't warn him of his mistake. So he was absent without notice. He clears his desk and calls Grandpa who says there is something Paul doesn't know yet about the book. He should bring it with him tomorrow. That way Grandpa can explain it. Paul is not sure if he should really confess that he lost the book. He hopes that Grandpa will forget this by tomorrow. Why didn't Paul’s Father warn him? What does Grandpa want to tell him about the book? Will he confess that he lost it?

Paul is sick. He’s doing his grocery shopping in the supermarket. After that, he wants to go home, take sleeping pills, and write a message to his boss about his sick leave. Things are not going well at work at the moment. He should work more and play less detective. So he wants to give up trying to find his lost book by himself and go to the police instead. And he wants to call Grandpa tomorrow. He thinks whether he should tell him that the book was stolen. Will Paul really confess to Grandpa that he lost the book, and break his heart in doing so?

Paul is at the doctor’s because he got sick. The caretaker replies to his message: There are no cameras on the outside of Paul’s apartment building. So it is unknown if the book was thrown down from the balcony. Paul's friends are all angry, but he is able to make them understand his situation a bit. He gets a medical certificate and a prescription for sleeping pills. He thinks about getting the police involved. Will Paul get the police involved to investigate against his friends?

Paul celebrates his birthday alone at home. He has no more friends. Now Fritz is mad at him, too, because he told Anna that he knows about her criminal record. He could have only got that information from a police officer like Fritz. He has an idea: Maybe someone threw the book out of the balcony at the party and picked it up from the bushes below afterwards? That way, the whole mystery is completely open again. Paul writes a message to the caretaker: Are there security cameras outside? He starts to feel ill. Was the book thrown down from the balcony? Who has it? Are there also security cameras outside?

Scandal at the dinner buffet! Paul confronts Anna. He followed her and thinks he saw her trying to sell his book. And she was seen on the surveillance video with her bag. He also mentions her criminal record for theft. Anna is outraged. She was just trying to find a present for Paul’s birthday which he completely forgot. That's why she was looking for her old job hunting book at home. She put that big book in her handbag - that's why it wouldn’t close. She brought it to Berlin to show it to a book seller so that she can buy Paul the same book as a brand new edition. Taking a long time to find the book in her apartment was the reason she was late at the train station in Munich. Not because of a broken bicycle. Also, her cell phone was not empty. She just didn't have time to answer it. Anna's gift is just as big as Paul’s lost book. She says: “This is the same bag as at the party. Your gift doesn't quite fit into the handbag. So THE book doesn't fit either, you idiot!“ She slams the new job hunting book she bought for Paul on the table and walks away. If his lost book had been in her bag, he would have seen it sticking out in the surveillance video. He realizes, Fritz is also innocent - his bag has the same size as Anna’s bag. Paul mentioned Anna's criminal record. That was against his promise which he made to Fritz earlier. Only police officers can get such information. Will Fritz be angry about this?
