In this special episode, I'm joined by writer and screenwriter Thom Burgess for a chat about ghost stories, folklore and a lifelong fascination with the supernatural.

Thom talks about growing up surrounded by the ghostlore of Kent, from the phantom bride of Bluebell Hill to the stories that first frightened and fascinated him as a child, and how that interest eventually found its way into his own writing and the Paramount horror film Passenger.

Along the way, we get into M. R. James, haunted pubs, phantom hitchhikers, the strange ways folklore has moved online and, inevitably, those deeply unsettling Cat in the Hat videos. Thom also shares a couple of his own unexplained experiences, including a very strange night in a Seattle hotel.

We also talk about City of Ghosts: The Canterbury Ghost Story Festival, taking place in Canterbury on 3 October, which brings together more than 300 years of ghost stories, folklore, literature, film and the supernatural.

In 1710, strange disturbances began inside Knowehead House on the Islandmagee peninsula in County Antrim. Stones appeared from nowhere, bedclothes were arranged into the shape of corpses, and a ragged childlike figure was seen moving through the house before apparently predicting the death of its elderly resident, Ann Haltridge. After Ann died, eighteen-year-old Mary Dunbar arrived and soon began suffering violent fits, claiming invisible women were attacking her and producing pins, feathers and other objects from her mouth. Her accusations eventually sent eight women to prison for witchcraft and drew a ninth person into a case that became Ireland’s last major witch trial.

On 15 September 1875, seventy-nine-year-old Ann Tennant left her home in the Warwickshire village of Long Compton to buy a loaf of bread. Minutes later she was attacked by agricultural labourer James Haywood, a neighbour who had become convinced that Ann and a number of other villagers were witches. His extraordinary claims would follow him from the harvest fields of Long Compton to the courtroom at Warwick and eventually to Broadmoor.

Above the Warwickshire village of Long Compton stands one of England's strangest prehistoric landscapes. According to legend, the Rollright Stones are a king and his army turned to stone by a witch, while generations of local people told stories of bleeding elder trees, fairies dancing around the stones, impossible stone counts, shape-shifting witches and ancient monuments that moved after dark. Late on 8 January 2004, a woman calling herself Hasumi began posting to the Japanese message board 2channel after her usual train travelled far beyond its normal route and stopped at a deserted station she had never heard of. Over the next four hours, strangers online followed her journey through tunnels, distant drums, a terrifying encounter and finally a ride with a mysterious man, until Hasumi posted one final message and disappeared from the thread. Her story would become one of Japan’s most enduring internet legends and inspired an entire genre of mysterious “otherworld stations.”

A church in Texas where thousands looked into the sky in 1988. A theory that time moves towards rupture. A machine beneath Europe that became, for some, a symbol of a universe disturbed. And ordinary people, scattered across the internet, trying to explain why their lives feel as though they continued after something else ended.

Perhaps nothing happened. Perhaps the feeling is memory, grief, fear, nostalgia, or the strange dislocation of living through years that change too quickly.

Before the 1890 Morfa Colliery disaster, miners claimed they heard strange sounds in the four-foot seam, including doors opening and slamming in the darkness, and some believed the pit was warning them of fire or explosion. In May 1932, police forced open the door to a small apartment in Stockholm’s Atlas district. Inside lay the body of 32-year-old Lilly Lindeström, a sex worker last seen on Walpurgis Night. She had been bludgeoned to death during a sexual encounter, but the scene held something far stranger: her body had been drained of blood, and a gravy ladle smeared with it lay nearby. In February 1997, a man named Mel Waters phoned into Coast to Coast AM with a story so strange it would become one of the program’s most infamous legends. On his rural property near Ellensburg, Washington, Mel claimed there was a mysterious pit – a hole with no bottom. He said he had lowered fishing line more than 80,000 feet without hitting the end, that objects tossed into the hole never made a sound, and that bizarre events surrounded it: animals feared it, a neighbour's dead dog was supposedly thrown into it only to be seen alive again, and a bucket of ice lowered into the depths came back transformed.
