  • 59 - Ready or Not: Life After the PCAT

The Fika Crew welcomes Wendy Cox, PharmD (UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy), and Katherine "Kathy" Kelley (The Ohio State College of Pharmacy) to unpack pharmacy education's biggest dilemmas: what to do after retiring the PCAT in 2024?  Wendy and Kathy describe what their schools are seeing — students less prepared, GPAs harder to interpret, and readiness programs stepping in to fill the gap. We talk about what's driving grade inflation, rising remediation needs, and colleges struggling to gauge readiness without a common yardstick. The crew digs into bias, both in tests and in what they reveal about our educational system. Grab your favorite beverage + snack.   Intro and Fika Snack Sharing: 0:00 - 4:23 Life After PCAT: 4:24 Resources Paseiro P, Cox W. • 58 - A Wobbly Stool: Rethinking Research, Teaching, and Service

Should most research conducted by faculty simply stop? That's the provocative question posed by William Deresiewicz in a Chronicle of Higher Education essay that caught the attention of our guest David Zgarrick, Ph.D., Professor Emeritus, Northeastern University's Bouvé College of Health Sciences. Stuart, Jeff, and Kristin dig into pharmacy academia's "three-legged stool" of research, teaching, and service. Is asking every faculty member to do it all producing mediocrity instead of excellence? David draws on four decades in pharmacy education to unpack why clinical faculty are often set up to struggle with scholarship, and why the corporatization of universities often rewards the wrong things. Grab a snack and join the conversation.   Intro and Fika Snack Sharing: 0:00 - 3:46 Most Research Should Stop: 3:47   Resources Deresiewicz W. Most academic research should stop. • 56 - The Workload Estimator: Striving for Equity, Wellness, and Capturing Hidden Work

The Fika Crew talks with Gloria Grice, PharmD - Professor of Pharmacy Practice and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, St. Louis College of Pharmacy - about her years of work developing a faculty workload "estimator", a tool designed to spark conversation rather than produce a precise number. Our discussion is far-ranging, including how to capture teaching, service, and scholarship effort; why equity, wellness, and transparency matter; how workload data can reveal hidden burdens; and cultural growing pains. Gloria also shares candid lessons from rolling the tool out across numerous departments and schools. Intro and Fika Snack Sharing: 0:00 - 3:09 Workload Discussion: 3:10 Resources Grice GR.
