- 153 - The Story of The Flatwoods Monster: 74-Year Anniversary of The Green Monster
Dive back into the definitive West Virginia cryptid mystery with a special 74th-anniversary deep dive into the Flatwoods Monster. On September 12, 1952, a group of local boys and Kathleen May watched a fiery object streak across the Braxton County sky before landing on a dark hilltop in Flatwoods. What they found waiting in the trees was a towering, 12-foot-tall metallic entity with a blood-red face, glowing eyes, and an ace-of-spades cowl that left the witnesses sick for days.
Building on our most popular episode, this anniversary special expands far beyond the classic schoolyard legend to uncover a web of eerie, forgotten sightings from September 1952. Hear the chilling account of the Snitowsky family's Route 4 car stall, Audra Harper’s harrowing nighttime chase, and a terrifying pre-incident encounter in Weston, West Virginia. We also trace how these Appalachian roots intertwined with UFO investigator Albert Bender and the terrifying birth of the Men in Black mythos, concluding with a bizarre 1993 shape-shifting cryptid report from the exact same area.

Thu, 30 Jul 2026 - 10min - 146 - Beyond the Legend: New Witnesses to the Essex Mothman
In a previous episode, we shared a chilling listener encounter from Little Braxted, Essex—a childhood memory of glowing red eyes and a winged silhouette that haunted two sisters for decades.
Today, we return to that story with a special investigative update. Mark, a paranormal investigator from Paranormal Reason who lives just minutes from the original sighting location, joins the show to share his findings. Mark has spent his time on the ground researching the area's history and, crucially, has successfully located additional witnesses who describe near-identical encounters.
We break down these new reports, analyze how this UK encounter compares to the lore we cover here in the States, and discuss the importance of documenting these localized sightings before they fade into local legend.

Mon, 06 Jul 2026 - 40min - 141 - The Glowing Phantom and the Casket Factory Haunting
In this episode of Spooky Appalachia, we explore two unsettling accounts that prove some things in the mountains refuse to be ignored.
First, we travel back to 1954 to hear a harrowing childhood encounter. A nine-year-old boy wakes in the middle of the night to find a glowing, disembodied head drifting toward his bed—an entity that would haunt his family for generations to come. What was this strange light, and why did it follow them long after they left the family home?
Next, we head to the 1970s and a newspaper office built inside a former casket factory. After a photographer decides to play a cruel prank on a superstitious coworker, he finds himself targeted by the building’s true inhabitants. From disembodied voices and the suffocating feeling of being followed, to a chilling apparition at the top of the stairs, this is a haunting reminder that you should always be careful who—or what—you provoke in the dark.

Mon, 29 Jun 2026 - 14min - 140 - Beyond Wytheville: The 1987 Virginia UFO Flap Continued
In our previous episode, we dove deep into the infamous 1987 Wytheville, Virginia, UFO flap. The response was overwhelming. We were flooded with emails and comments from listeners across Southwest Virginia ordinary people who had been keeping extraordinary secrets for nearly forty years.
It turns out, the "Wytheville Flap" was far more widespread than anyone realized.
In this episode, we share these chilling, firsthand accounts that paint a much larger picture of that fateful autumn in 1987. From massive, silent black triangles gliding over Galax and Tazewell, to clusters of "bubble-like" craft hovering motionless over mountain ridge lines, and an unsettling, high-strung encounter in Shawsville that left a young witness physically drained the stories are as diverse as they are terrifying. These reports, coming from honest, everyday people who were never looking for attention, confirm one thing: in 1987, the Appalachian sky was full of something that simply did not belong.
Tune in as we piece together these forgotten sightings and explore the far-reaching impact of the 1987 incursion.

Mon, 22 Jun 2026 - 12min - 139 - The True Origins of Spooky Appalachia and Beyond: My Guest Talk at the 2026 Grafton Monster Festival
In June 2026, I had the incredible honor of taking the stage at the Grafton Monster Festival to discuss the journey of Spooky Appalachia. This episode captures that live talk, offering a rare look behind the curtain at how this project evolved from a passion for regional legends into the thriving community platform it is today.
Throughout the presentation, I reflect on why this channel has always been focused on the people the listeners who bravely share their real-life encounters from across the mountains. We move beyond the myths to explore the raw, unsettling cryptid reports coming straight from the front lines of the night shift. These are the stories that remind us all why we keep our eyes on the treeline. Whether you are a long-time follower or new to the lore of our hills, this bonus episode offers a heartfelt and chilling look at what it takes to curate the stories that haunt our landscape.

Thu, 18 Jun 2026 - 27min - 138 - The Legend and Beyond: A New Witness Account of the Grafton Monster
What really lurks along the banks of the Tygart River? While the Grafton Monster has long been discussed as a piece of Appalachian folklore, the truth behind the sightings is far more unsettling.
In this episode, we bridge the gap between history and a modern-day mystery. We start by revisiting the original 1964 report from The Grafton Sentinel—the sighting that sparked a local frenzy and explore the bizarre, unexplained physical evidence left behind by the creature.
But we aren’t just looking at the archives; we are going deeper. I am sharing a chilling, exclusive firsthand account sent to me by a fan who lived through a brush with this headless monstrosity in Taylor County in 1977. This is a rare, direct testimony from a witness who has kept this secret for decades. By pairing the foundational legend with this haunting new evidence, we reveal why the Grafton Monster is far more than just a campfire story.

Mon, 15 Jun 2026 - 11min - 137 - The Wytheville UFO Flap: The Danny Gordon & Roger Hall Interview
We’re diving into the vault. In this special bonus episode, we are presenting raw, on-location interviews with Danny Gordon and Roger Hall, two men who experienced the infamous 1987 Wytheville, Virginia, UFO flap firsthand.
These interviews were originally captured at a live UFO festival and have been unavailable to the public since being removed from our YouTube archives. Because these accounts are so rare, we felt it was vital to restore them for the podcast.
Please note: As these were recorded in a busy, live festival environment, the audio quality is not studio-grade. While you will hear background noise, the historical value of their testimony remains unmatched. We invite you to listen closely to this piece of Appalachian paranormal history that was almost lost to time.

Thu, 11 Jun 2026 - 16min - 136 - The Wytheville UFO Flap: The 1987 Wave & Modern Sightings
In the late fall of 1987, the quiet town of Wytheville, Virginia, became the epicenter of one of the most intense and well-documented UFO flaps in American history. What began as a series of sightings by high-ranking local law enforcement quickly spiraled into a massive phenomenon involving thousands of eyewitness reports, structured craft maneuvers that defied physics, and even chilling encounters with the mysterious "Men in Black."
Featured on the classic series Unsolved Mysteries, the 1987 Wytheville UFO wave remains a cornerstone of Ufology. But was it just a moment in time, or is the activity still happening? In this episode, we dive deep into the original police reports and the harrowing experiences of those who were there. Furthermore, we address the claims from modern residents who insist that the skies over Wythe County are far from empty. I’m sharing exclusive, chilling eyewitness accounts sent in by listeners—ranging from daylight sightings over Main Street to silent, high-speed maneuvers witnessed on dark country roads—proving that whatever appeared in 1987 may have never truly left.
If you are researching the 1987 Wytheville UFO wave, looking for recent UFO sightings in Southwest Virginia, or simply love a high-strangeness tale from the Appalachian mountains, this episode is for you.

We then jump to the Slatebelt region of Pennsylvania, near Bangor, where a recent report details a massive creature near an industrial quarry—a being that unfolded into human-like proportions before vanishing into the night. Deep in the heart of Danville, Virginia, right on the North Carolina border, lies a crossing that locals have feared for generations. Officially known as Berry Hill Bridge, its darker nickname Satan’s Bridgeis well-earned. This isn't just a bridge; it's the center of a "triple threat" of Appalachian hauntings, flanked by the reality-bending Gravity Hill and the desolate ruins of the Witch’s House.
In this episode, we explore the heavy, unnatural atmosphere of Berry Hill Road. We dive into the history of occult rumors, ritualistic graffiti, and the legendary entities said to stalk the Dan River banks—from the Headless Woman searching for her lantern to the glowing gaze of "Old Red Eye."

The Fog Man (1964): A terrifying encounter where a materialized figure attempted to board a young couple’s roadster. The Bipedal "Deer": A shocking 7.5-foot-tall cryptid sighting that defies biological explanation. The Ghost Racer: Echoes of a fatal crash that still roar through the pitch-black night. The Horse Mask Figure: A modern, deeply unsettling encounter with a figure standing in the middle of the bridge. The Sunroof Whispers: A group of friends whose trip past the bridge resulted in unexplained physical illness and disembodied voices. From phantom cries to electronic failures and spectral photography, we uncover why Berry Hill Bridge remains one of the most notorious paranormal hotspots in the region.

Mon, 11 May 2026 - 20min - 130 - Dogmen, Winged Specters, & The Mid-Ohio Pale Walker: 4 Fans Share Their Real Encounters
This episode features first-hand narration and submissions from our community.
The most terrifying stories aren't the ones passed down through centuries—they’re the ones happening right now to people just like you. In this special episode, we hand the microphone over to four members of the Spooky Appalachia family to share their personal, unexplainable encounters with the creatures that call these hills home.
From the fog-heavy roads of West Virginia to the military-monitored hollers of the Mid-Ohio Valley, these fans recount the moments their reality shattered:
The Route 7 Stalker: A driver in Wetzel County, WV, realizes the "skinny bear" he saw a decade ago was actually a bipedal, canine-like hunter that has claimed the highway as its own.The Winged Gentleman of Ruffin: Near the infamous Satan’s Bridge (Danville, VA line), two friends witness a silent, human-shaped figure in a duster and wide-brimmed hat glide effortlessly over their car.The Carroll County Invisible: A Maryland commuter describes the gut-wrenching feeling of being hunted by a transparent, humanoid entity swinging through the treeline. The Mid-Ohio Valley Siege: A family’s encounter with a spindly "Pale Walker" leads to a chilling military presence, Blackhawk helicopters, and a terrifying realization that the creatures can mimic the sounds of their own hounds. These are the voices of those who have seen the "veil" grow thin. Listen as they describe the sights, the smells, and the lingering dread of Appalachian cryptids.

Thu, 07 May 2026 - 41min - 129 - The Ghost of Greenbrier & Screaming Jenny: West Virginia’s Classic Legends
West Virginia’s hills are steeped in more than just mist; they hold secrets that have shaped American legal history and legends that haunt the iron rails. In this episode, we dive into two of the Mountain State’s most chilling "classic" ghost stories.
First, we travel to Greenbrier County to recount the tragic life and afterlife of Zona Heaster Shue. After her sudden death in 1897, her mother claimed Zona’s spirit returned from the grave to reveal the terrifying truth about her husband, Erasmus "Trout" Shue. It remains the only known case in U.S. history where a ghost's testimony helped secure a murder conviction.
Next, we head to the historic confluence of the Shenandoah and Potomac Rivers in Harpers Ferry. We explore the tragic legend of Screaming Jenny, a kind-hearted woman whose life ended in a ball of fire and a collision with a train. To this day, engineers and locals claim to see her flaming specter racing down the tracks, her cries still echoing through the valley.
Join us as we explore these foundational tales of Appalachian folklore—where the veil between the living and the dead is as thin as the mountain air.

Sun, 03 May 2026 - 12min - 128 - Shadows of the Service: 2 Appalachian Park Ranger Stories
The men and women who patrol the Appalachian wilderness are trained for many things—wildlife encounters, lost hikers, and harsh terrain—but nothing prepares them for the unexplainable. In this episode, we bring you two harrowing accounts from those who wore the badge in the deep woods.
First, we explore a haunting at a remote ranger station where a sudden, thick fog and a supernatural sentinel in the form of a massive deer trap a ranger within the park boundaries. Then, we dive into a chilling testimony from a forest ranger who spent 48 years in the service, finally breaking his silence on the "Feral Families" that inhabit the restricted zones. From spectral activity in the headquarters to the rust-stained, "off-human" figures watching from the tree line, these stories prove that the Appalachian mountains hold secrets that aren't quite man and aren't quite beast.

This week on Spooky Appalachia, we bring you three chilling accounts of encounters that prove the mountains never truly forget the past.
The Helpful Stranger of Point Pleasant: We venture into the infamous "TNT Area" in West Virginia. Amidst the World War II explosives bunkers and the heavy scent of decay, a late-night explorer finds herself snagged on a gate—only to be aided by a young man who shouldn't have been there. Was it a "residual image" of a helpful soul, or a warning from the shadows? The Mimic in the Hallway: A sprawling family home in Pulaski, Virginia, now sits in ruins, but the memories within remain sharp. We hear the story of a child haunted by "Mr. Nobody"—a presence that didn't just move toys or open doors, but eventually found its voice to mock the living.Bonus – The Midnight Catch: A fan shares a bonus story of a nighttime fishing trip gone wrong when something from the water's edge decided to join the expedition. From the "igloos" of Mason County to the crumbling foundations of Pulaski, these stories remind us that in Appalachia, you are rarely as alone as you think.

Sun, 19 Apr 2026 - 27min - 118 - The Mothman Witness: An Original 1967 Survivor Tells All
In one of the most compelling interviews in Spooky Appalachia history, we sit down with Linda, an original witness to the legendary Mothman sightings of 1967.
Decades after the events that shook Point Pleasant, West Virginia, Linda breaks her silence to share a terrifyingly detailed account of the night she came face-to-face with the "Bird." This isn't just a story about a cryptid; it is an exploration into the high strangeness that gripped the Ohio River Valley, including pulsating UFOs, "lost time," and chilling encounters with the mysterious Men in Black [32:12].
In this episode, we dive into:
The Sighting: Linda describes being 17 years old on a hilltop in Mason, WV, when a massive, reddish-orange UFO hovered directly over her car.The Encounter: The moment of "lost time" and finding herself sitting at the feet of an 8-foot-tall, man-like creature with dark, wing-like appendages. The Men in Black: A haunting encounter in Point Pleasant with "carbon copy" men in solid black suits and sunglasses who appeared shortly before the disaster. The Silver Bridge Tragedy: Linda shares her prophetic dream of the bridge collapse and the eerie silence that followed the December 15th disaster. The Aftermath: How hypnotic regression helped her reclaim lost memories and why she believes these beings are interdimensional.Whether you are a lifelong follower of the Mothman prophecy or a newcomer to Appalachian folklore, this firsthand account provides a bridge between the physical and the unknown.

Sat, 18 Apr 2026 - 59min - 117 - Did These Outdoors-men See the Mothman? Wings, Red Eyes, and the MIB
Is the Mothman a harbinger of doom, or simply a predator of the Appalachian woods? In this episode of Spooky Appalachia, we examine two incredible accounts from hunters and fishermen who came face-to-face with a winged nightmare.
First, we travel to Floyd County, Virginia, on Thanksgiving morning, 2019. A turkey hunter’s successful shot is interrupted by a bone-chilling screech and the sight of a 7-foot-tall creature perched in the skeletal branches of an oak tree. With glowing amber-red eyes and a massive wingspan, this entity seemed to be stalking the same woods as the hunter—leaving him to wonder if the encounter was a warning of the global lockdowns that were soon to follow.
Then, we look back at a chilling 1970s encounter near Addison, West Virginia. A local fisherman named Reece followed a haunting wail from the Ohio River to a place called Brian's Run, only to find a "breathing ball of brush" that transformed into a tall, dark humanoid. This story takes an even darker turn when Reece returns to find his boat burned to ashes and a mysterious Man in Black visiting his home, forcing his family to flee the state forever.
Key highlights from this episode:
The terrifying physical description of a modern-day Mothman sighting. The connection between cryptid sightings and the mysterious Men in Black. Why these entities seem drawn to outdoorsmen in remote areas.Do you have a story from the woods? In this episode of Spooky Appalachia, we dive into the dense, silent forests of Virginia to uncover two bone-chilling encounters with a creature that isn't supposed to exist.
First, our host shares a deeply personal childhood memory from the remote Appalachian high country. While exploring the thick timber of his backyard at just seven years old, he and his two dogs stumbled upon a massive, rust-colored shape hidden beneath the forest floor that "uncoiled" and rose with a guttural groan that shook the earth This encounter left a lasting mark, followed by weeks of strange vocalizations and the feeling of being watched by a dark, vertical shape in the tree line.
Next, we head to the shores of Smith Mountain Lake in 1978. A fan shares their story of being 12 years old and encountering a broad-shouldered, midnight-black figure crouched in the jagged shade of a towering pine It wasn't a bear, and it wasn't human—and the reaction from the storyteller's father was enough to confirm that some secrets are best left in the woods .

Thu, 20 Jul 2023 - 6min - 84 - Winged Humanoid Creature - Silverstone, NC, Oct 1983
This week’s story was sent in to us by someone who had an interesting encounter with a winged humanoid creature back in October of 1983. It took place in Watauga County, North Carolina.
I was driving a Volkswagen Beetle to visit with my sister in Silverstone NC, which is off Highway 421, she said. I was around 18 years old at the time. I stopped at a stop sign off 421 where my headlights were shining directly on a barn straight ahead. That’s when I saw this winged, human-like creature running alongside the front of the barn. It was around six to seven feet tall, dark, with two arms, legs, and huge wings. The creature looked like it was part bird and part man and it appeared to be wearing combat boots. Seeing this really freaked me out, so I sped away.
After this I noticed the creature was following me.I made a left turn and sped up, questioning what the heck I was seeing. I heard wings flapping, looked into my driver’s side mirror and could see this thing almost on top of my car following me. It kept up with my speed, which I would estimate at about 45 to 50 mph on a very curvy two-lane road. It followed behind and beside my vehicle for several miles.
Eventually my engine started sputtering and seemingly the battery was being drained. The headlights started dimming as I nervously rounded curves. At this point the winged thing was flying over and pretty much clinging to the driver’s side of my car. It was hitting my car and smacking into it. I didn’t understand why it was on the driver’s side hitting the car. I felt it was trying to get inside my vehicle and get to me
I don’t remember what happened immediately after this. I was out of it and came too several hours later and had gone around several curves .I don’t know why or what happened after those curves, but I was really puzzled and lost. I saw a sign that read Camp Joy and I had no clue how I got off of my normal route or how I got there.
When I got home I realized what the time was, I was puzzled even more by this. The trip that usually took about 20 minutes coming back from my sister’s took 4 hours. When I realized all of this I felt sick! To this day I’m still not sure what happened.
Big thank you to the person who sent us this story. It was pretty incredible.

Thu, 13 Jul 2023 - 6min - 83 - Green-Eyes Sighting - Chickamauga, TN, 2001
For this week, we’ve got a story sent in to us by a listener who may have had an encounter with Green Eyes at The Chickamauga Battlefield in Tennessee. For those of you who haven’t heard of Green Eyes, according to some it’s the spirit of a confederate soldier that got his head blown off by a cannon. His spirit now roams the area searching for his head. Others say that Green Eyes is a cryptid creature that was lured to the area by the bloody Chickamauga battle. Now that we’ve given a brief overview, let's get to the story.
When I was in Middle School around 2001, my grandmother took me to the Chickamauga Battlefield in Tennessee. We did it all the time when I was a kid, I actually still like to do it! She took me to go see the battlefield and check out the caves in the battlefield and stuff. We always like going to look at them.
I had been really upset that day because my parents had gotten divorced not too long ago and I was still kind of sad about it. My grandma had always told me that green eyes is attracted to sad stuff. We were walking, you always see stuff in the tree line and stuff when you walk around the Chickamauga battlefield for long enough, but we got to the dried up creek. We were going to look at the caves around there. When we got to the dried up creek we could see something kind of moving towards the tree line. It looked kind of skinny but looked like it kind of was made out of hay and the glowing green eyes. I'll never forget the eyes. They were like two lightning bugs. It looked up, looked at us and then he kind of just disappeared further into the forest. My grandmother told me we need to get out of here. So, we went back to the car and left. It still kind of scares me sometimes being out in the woods especially when it starts to get dark because I know that's when green eyes will come out.

Thu, 22 Jun 2023 - 26min - 80 - Spirited Visit from a Loved One - Massachusetts, 2007
This week’s story was sent in to us by a listener who had an interesting experience after their grandfather’s death.
I'll give a little background. I was 10 years old living in Massachusetts the year was 2006 when my grandfather died of a heart attack. I remember thinking that it was not real. Mostly because I never experienced death before that. But we ended up going to his wake and the funeral. It was an open casket wake. I saw his face, but it still did not feel real.
Fast forward one year from the day my grandfather died in April 2006. I was sleeping in my bed, when out of nowhere my hot wheels car shot through the room from my dresser. No one else was in the room, but me. To make matters worse, simultaneously I heard a commotion in my parents room. I ran over there scared. When I got to their room they were both standing over my grandfather's hat. They had hung it up on the wall after he died as a memorial for him. Apparently it had fallen despite it being hung on the wall for almost a whole year without it falling.
At that moment I knew in my heart that it was my grandfather sending a sign to us that he was there with us. Despite the fact that I loved my grandfather it did not make me feel at ease thinking he was roaming around our house moving things. After that I did not know if I should tell anyone this story because I was not sure if anyone would believe me. I have no evidence of it happening. Other than my parents possibly remembering it happening. And the idea of it happening terrified me. So I did not tell much of anyone. But now I do not care if any one believes and it has been so long to terrify anymore.
In three days it will be 17 years since he died. May he rest in peace.
Big thank you to the listener who sent us this story. I really enjoyed it! It gives the same kind of good vibes that story we did a few weeks back Tucked in By a Spirit. The spirit in both of these didn’t seem to want to do anything malicious. Just peaceful and kind of sweet sounding.

Thu, 15 Jun 2023 - 3min - 79 - Two UFO Sightings from West Virginia
Today we’ve got a double feature of UFO sightings sent in to us by a listener in West Virginia.
Back in July of 2020, I was with my dad and we were heading back home from one of my baseball games in Logan County, West Virginia. It was around 8:00 PM. As my dad was driving us back, we saw on the right side of the road through some trees odd looking green and red type lights. It was strange because it couldn’t be a plane, it was too low to the ground to be a plane but too high in the trees to be a person. It was very strange. Never saw metal shapes or anything because the trees on the right side of the road blocked the view. I didn’t take a photo because I didn’t have a phone and we were driving. We didn't expect it and we passed it by. My dad and I always thought this was odd and might be a UFO due to the color and its height from the ground. It was also stationary.
If this sighting wasn’t weird enough the listener that sent this one in had one more.
This happened on April 30th, 2023 around 7:00 in the evening near Madison, West Virginia. I was with my family riding in the back seat of our car when on my left out the window I could see a faint white circle. At first I thought it was a plane but then I saw a second object, similar in shape. They were going in circles kinda like vultures do when they find a dead animal. It was a very weird experience indeed. If you look at the zoomed in photo I sent, it doesn’t really look like a drone or anything I can think of.
Thank you to the listener who sent these two stories in! I’ve always heard if you’ve seen one UFO you’ll see more, so to the fan who sent these in be sure to keep an eye out!

Thu, 08 Jun 2023 - 5min - 78 - Encounter With A Bloody Spirit - Long Beach, CA, Early 2000s
This week we have a pretty awesome story from a listener named Cheesebotodoom/Kenn from California where he had an encounter with a blood covered spirit that happened to them in the early 2000’s.
I don’t remember exactly where in Long Beach the apartment was because I only went to it twice, the second time only because my dad needed someone to dog sit while he was away on business. The first time I went was just after he rented the place before he actually finished moving himself, his partner and the dogs in so I could get his mail for him. While I was sitting in the dining room looking through the kitchen to the EMPTY doorway to the little laundry room when I started getting real uncomfortable so I looked away to see if I could see anything out of the front room that would explain it and when I looked back there was a bloody woman in a torn up white shift or sleeping dress based on how loosely it hung with cuts on her arms and bloody knuckles and hands and blood all over the dress hanging by a rope in the doorway to the laundry room. Scared me so badly, but more than that filled me with an overwhelming sense of sadness and depression I almost started crying. It spooked me enough that I tried to forget it so I never took the time to look up if anything happened there to explain it. The other time I went a couple years later I got drunk the couple nights I had to stay there so I don’t remember exactly how uncomfortable it may have made me.
Thank you Cheesebotodoom/Kenn for this story! It gave me the chills when I first read it.

Thu, 01 Jun 2023 - 5min - 77 - Possible Encounter With A Spirit at The Point Pleasant TNT Area, Summer 2008
This week we have a pretty awesome story from our good friend Theresa of Theresa's Haunted History of the Tri-State. This is about an encounter that wasn’t Mothman in the Point Pleasant TNT area.
On a whim one summer night in 2008, my friend and I went exploring the TNT area in Pt. Pleasant . We've checked out the accessible igloos many times, only three of which were actually opened, but he wanted to show me some pallets, drums, and other debris that had recently been placed in front of a few of the privately owned igloos, which were located down a different trail than the one that held the open igloos...
Thanks Theressa for the story, be sure to check out her site Theresa's Haunted History of the Tri-State for more of her stories.

Thu, 25 May 2023 - 9min - 76 - Possible Mothman Sighting - Ravenswood, WV, Nov 2006
This week, we have a story that was sent to us by The Mothman Museum, of you guessed it, a Mothman sighting!
Thursday the 2nd Nov. 2006, my son and I were heading to Ravenswood (not too far from Point Pleasant).
It was just before 5 PM and it was starting to become dusk. On my side of the road, I saw an extremely tall human-like figure literally jump/float straight up from the ground to the top of the trees. There are no houses near there, just trees and some empty land behind. I felt no fear, just a feeling of “Wow, what the hell was that thing?” I mentioned it to my son a couple of minutes
later when we neared town but did not tell him exactly where I had seen it. He told me he had seen it as well, but we both had stayed silent because of some other weird things that had been happening lately at our home...we were spooked enough as it was.
I had not stopped to turn around because I was in a hurry to get somewhere before a certain time. On our way home, maybe 75-100 ft further down the road from the original site, both my son and I saw the figure again. He was moving upward in the branches of the trees. Yesterday (Friday Nov 3 2006) right before dark, my son saw it again, outside near a small patch of woods. My son noted red eyes during this second sighting.
After some research, I knew what we had seen was Mothman!
Big thanks to The Mothman Museum for sending this over and allowing us to use the story!

Thu, 18 May 2023 - 4min - 75 - Spirit Attack - Edinburgh Manor, Oct 2021
This week, we have a story sent in by one of our listeners. The story took place in October of 2021 at Edinburgh Manor. A quick back story on Edinburgh Manor. The property started out as a poor farm, in the 1850’s. In exchange for working on the farm, people were provided food and shelter. With this one in particular most of the workers died on the property. Then in 1911, it officially became Edinburgh Manor for the insane, elderly, and disabled. It eventually closed in 2010. It is said hundreds of people died on the property during these years and is rumored to be one of the most haunted locations in the midwest. Now that we've given a little background let's take a look at the story.
I had been to Edinburgh Manor once already by the time this happened, but it’s definitely purportedly haunted. When this happened, I had just finished walking around on my own during a tour and just went up to the front of the building and was small talking with the guide and we realized we had a lot in common. She invited me to do the last round with her, to make sure no one was left in the building. We had cleared the lower and main level already and started up to the second floor. We were just messing around and joking and I noticed my camera started acting funny. We had gotten to the top of the stairs, turned left and we’re kind of poking fun at the building and I said, “with how purportedly haunted this place is, I’m astonished I haven’t gotten any activity”. Not 10 seconds later we were walking down the hallway and this 3” thick solid wood utility door (hinges on one side and latched on the other) came off the hinges and flew straight at us and hit both me, the guide and her dog pretty hard - she got a bad bruise from it and it broke a mirror. I’ve been to my fair share of haunted locations, but I’ve never seen anything remotely close to what happened here.
Thanks to our listener that sent in this story. I think a big door is one of the larger objects I’ve heard someone say they had thrown at them. She sent a few photos of the door and it’s one of those old judge wooden types. This was definitely an interesting story!

Thu, 11 May 2023 - 4min - 74 - Tucked In by a Spirit - Lawrence, KS, 2013
This week, we have a story that was sent to us by a listener, who had a strange encounter with a spirit back in 2013.
Back in 2013, I’d moved to the town of Lawrence, Kansas - a borderline oasis compared to the nothing that surrounds it. I was being housed by a family of a friend I’d made there, so I was quick to join them in things like household chores and weekly excursions. Every Wednesday, they went to church, so I usually tagged along as a sign of good faith.
Not that Wednesday. That night, I had one of the worst migraines of my life. It was straight to bed, head under the covers, plus a pillow for good measure...
Thank you to the anonymous listener who sent this in. Remember if you have had a paranormal experience and would like to see it featured on this site be sure to send it into webmaster@spookyappalachia.com!

Thu, 04 May 2023 - 5min - 73 - The Story of the Virginia Devil Monkey
I first heard of the Virginia Devil Monkey while reading the book “Monsters of Virginia: Mysterious Creatures in The Old Dominion” by L.B. Taylor Jr. It caught my attention because a lot of the incidents occurred very close to where I spent the first few years of my life growing up near Roanoke Virginia.
There were several sightings of these creatures in South West Virginia, one of the more famous took place in 1994. A woman from Ohio was driving through South West Virginia and the Roanoke area one stormy night on her way to the Outer Banks in North Carolina. She was delayed a bit having to take a detour through a two lane road south of Roanoke Virginia. She described the area as being very dark and remote. The time was about 2:30 in the morning when suddenly a creature leapt across the road and in front of her car. The creature then walked off not seeming to notice the woman or her car.
She described the creature as a monkey-wolf hybrid type creature. It was covered with short sleek black fur. It stood on its hind legs at about 6 feet tall, and had pointy ears, a flat snout, and a long thin tail. She also noted that it was also very muscular and thin.
Shortly after this sighting stories of missing pets and livestock began, along with more sightings of the creature in the area. A few weeks after this incident a couple in nearby Shawsville reported seeing a creature on their property one night and noted their German Shepherd had gone missing after.
Overall this was an interesting find, I had never heard of this but I was not living in the area at this time. It’s also possible I may have been too young to remember even if I had heard of something. I looked into the Devil Monkeys a bit while writing this story and found reports of it spanning all over the US as well as British Columbia. Explanations for the creature include anything from an escaped zoo animal to a large thought-to-be-extinct form of baboon.
Let us know what you think of this cryptid! Remember if you have had a paranormal experience and would like to see it featured on this site be sure to send it into webmaster@spookyappalachia.com!

Sat, 22 Apr 2023 - 1h 13min - 71 - Possible Mothman Sighting - Point Pleasant, WV, Dec 2022
This week, we have a story from a member of our Mothman Sightings Facebook group. Can anyone guess what it’s about?
Me and my cousin Marcos were in the Point Pleasant West Virginia area visiting family. While we were driving down Redmond ridge road at around 9:30ish at night sometime around Christmas, we passed a human-like figure as we slowed down. We looked out our rear view mirror where we saw a large figure, that was 6.5-7ft tall. As me and my cousin rolled down the window to ask if ”everything was alright” all of a sudden our reverse light caught a glimpse of large beaming eyes looking our way. My cousin told me to “floor it”out of there.
We took off down the road and after going down the road a few minutes everything seemed normal. Until a few minutes later when everything had calmed down, my cousin Marcos looked to the right and noticed a large creature flying almost directly over us. We were going about 30 mph and stepped on the gas as we hit speeds of 45-50mph the creature was still following us with ease. With the windy backroads It was pretty hard to go much faster.
After about 2 minutes of trying to outrun the human-like creature we got on county route 17/5. At that point there was no one behind us. I have never known about this creature until I went to visit your community. I’m not sure if I’m crazy and my eyes were seeing things but I would like to know if anyone else had experienced such things. Or if I saw the “moth man” or I was just seeing things.
This was a pretty interesting story, had seen a few things online about people still seeing the creature around Point Pleasant and the TNT area, but this is the first story we’ve received on it. We would love to get more like it!

Thu, 20 Apr 2023 - 6min - 70 - Possible Spirit Encounter - Randolph House, Pulaski, VA, 1990
This week, we have a story that was sent to us by a member of our community who saw our video on the Randolph House located in Pulaski, VA. She sent this story along about an encounter her mother had working there in the early 90s.
After seeing your video on the Randolph House I decided to reach out about an encounter my mother had while working there in the 90s. According to her, that place is definitely haunted.
My mother was the only medical technician at the hospital. She worked there for many years and saw a lot of strange stuff but one story always stood out to me. The top floor of the facility was used as storage, my mother would often get sent up there to get something. She usually would take the elevator to go up there since it was easier to carry things back down that way. One night she went up to get something, and when she got back on the elevator there was a woman on it. At the time it didn’t occur to her that she would have had to have seen the woman get on the elevator since it never left the top floor. The woman would have had to have been in the room she just stepped off into. They went back down to the first floor, the lady never said anything. My mother told her to have a good night and got off the elevator. She started to walk around the corner and that’s when it hit her. There was no way the lady could have gotten on the elevator. My mother then turned back around and walked back to the elevator. The elevator was empty! She then looked around, and didn’t see the lady. There was nowhere she could have walked off too without going by my mother since it’s a straight hall.
My mother then asked some of the other staff that were on that floor working at the desk if they saw the woman get off the elevator. That’s when they told her that people have been seeing that woman on the elevator for many years. People don’t know if she’s someone who worked there, a patient or what. My mother never thought the spirit was evil or anything, but I think what happened has always spooked her.
Thank you Katherine for sending us your mother’s amazing story! We really hope we can get permission to go inside the place one day to film, it’s definitely creepy but no one seems to know who the owner is. If anyone watching or reading this happens to know, let us know!

Thu, 13 Apr 2023 - 6min - 69 - Possible Woman in White Sighting During the 2020 Lockdown
This story is a bit special because, well it happened to me! I’ve been a little reluctant to share some of my odd experiences, but after talking with so many people who have had experiences I do feel a little more comfortable sharing now.
This happened early one dark and rainy morning during the COVID lockdown of 2020. I can’t remember when it was exactly, I know it was still cold out and near the beginning of the lockdown. There was an emergency at work that I had to drive into work for. Because I had been working from home for a few weeks and had not been out in a while.
While driving, I never saw a single car, likely because of the lockdown. I was stopped at a stop light when out of the corner of my eye, I saw a woman in a paper-thin-looking dress walking down the street and into the park.I remember thinking, "Well, that's odd." It was cold, rainy and still dark outside. So a woman in a thin dress with no jacket did not make much sense.
I looked up at the light again, still red. Then I looked back for the lady and she had vanished. I could still see further ahead of where she had been, and there was no trace of her. I kept driving, and later it dawned on me that I should have gotten my phone out and recorded it. It would have been a cool thing to capture.
There you have it, one of my own stories. I’ve had a few others that I may share over time, but this one was definitely pretty interesting and the most recent. Let me know what you think of it, and hopefully it encourages more folks to share their stories.

Thu, 06 Apr 2023 - 8min - 68 - Possible MIB Encounter - Mothman Museum, Early 2000s
This week, we have a story that was sent to us by a member of our community who may have had an encounter with one of the men in black while working at The Mothman Museum in Point Pleasant, West Virginia.
When the Mothman Museum was in its original location in the early 2000s, myself, an employee and my grandfather had a strange encounter. A Young guy, Mid 20's, wearing sunglasses, a black suit, tie and shoes entered the museum and began asking questions about the Point Pleasant Mothman and UFO sightings while referencing the movie "The Cell" . As the questions continued I began to get more and more creeped out until I finally called for our other employee who was working in the back. The guy eventually began to wrap up his strange interrogation of us when my grandfather entered the museum, but before our visitor left the museum he asked if we had "Any complimentary tobacco products or Licorice?". We explained to him, no we did not, and he left. Once he was out of the museum my grandfather asked if any of us had noticed how strange his shoes were. My grandfather described them as "having thick soles, 2 1/2 to 3 inches thick".
The person who sent me this story mentioned that they get all kinds of odd visitors. I’ve seen a lot of weird things myself when I’ve gone in. They mentioned that this experience has always stuck out to them. Especially the part where they asked for complimentary tobacco products or Licorice. It’s like the guy didn’t know what year it was.
Big thanks to the anonymous Mothman Museum employee who sent this story in. Those were definitely some off behaviors mentioned. I myself have seen some strange things from people while at the museum, but nothing like that!

Sat, 25 Mar 2023 - 53min - 66 - Black-Eyed Kid Encounter - Raleigh, NC, 2012
Since you guys can’t get enough of the Black-eyed-kid stories we did some digging and found one posted in various places on the internet from Raleigh, North Carolina that took place in 2012. We hope you enjoy this story.
Kerrie Kisner hadn’t intended to stop at the Triangle Town Center mall on her way home from Wake Tech Community College near Raleigh, North Carolina, but she did. She wished she hadn’t.
“There were very few people there that day and I found it strangely eerie how quiet it was,” Kisner, 20, said. “While walking back to my car I rounded a corner and saw an older lady and a young boy. He immediately caught my attention because he was so odd looking, I had never seen anyone like him.”
The boy, about twelve years old, seemed average at first, but as Kisner watched him talk with the woman, he seemed anything but average. The boy’s black hair contrasted sharply with his pale skin; dark patches hung under his eyes.
“It looked like he hadn't slept in weeks,” Kisner said. “He had a very thin face.”As Kisner walked closer to the pair, she heard their conversation. In a quiet, but strong voice, the boy asked the woman for help.
“He stood very rigid with his hands by his sides looking at the ground as she fished around in her purse for something to give to him,” Kisner said. “As I got closer I noticed he seemed to get more and more uncomfortable.”
The boy began to shift his body when Kisner passed them on her way to her car, then he lifted his head and made eye contact with her. “I froze. His eyes were black as night, very dull, almost dead,” Kisner said. “The look he gave me has haunted me. The feeling I got from him was as though he wasn't all there, almost ghostly.”
Eyes locked on Kisner’s, the boy turned slowly and, not waiting for the older woman to give him what she dug for in her purse, simply walked away. Kisner doesn’t know who, or what the boy was, but this memory will stick with her forever. “Ever since then the look he gave me has haunted me,” she said. “Almost like he knew what I had been thinking.”
Who doesn’t get the chills from these stories? We hope to find more like this in the future. If you have a creepy story you’d like to see featured you can email us at webmaster@spookyappalchia.com.

Thu, 23 Mar 2023 - 4min - 65 - The Story of Vegetable Man
This story is about The Vegetable Man from Fairmont, West Virginia.
One hot July day 1968 a young man by the name of Jennings Fredrick who was around 19 years old at the time, had gone woodchuck hunting near his home in Fairmont West Virginia. He hadn't had much luck and was about to head home, when he heard a strange high pitched sound like that of a sped-up recording. A voice reportedly said to him “You need not fear me. I wish to communicate. I come as a friend. We know of you all. I come in peace. I wish for medical assistance. I need your help.”
He then saw a green skeletal stalk-like creature, it was about 6-7 feet tall with slanted yellow eyes. It had human-like facial features, and long vine-like arms that were no wider than a quarter. Its fingers had suction cups on the end of them.
Before he could move, he felt a vine wrap around him. Then what felt like a needle stuck into his arm. He could not get away, the creature had him in some type of trance-like paralysis state. All he could do is look at the creature whose eyes had turned from red to yellow as it sucked blood from Jennings’s arm. Once the creature finished, then walked off out of sight. Jennings then heard an odd humming sound and thought it might be a craft taking off.
Jennings recovered from the trance-like state and went home. He did not tell his family of the event. Months later he did tell the story to a UFO researcher from West Virginia named Gray Barker. Gray dubbed the creature “Vegetable Man”
I had heard this story a few times over the years and thought this was it but I later found out while reading a post on Appalachian Oddity that there is actually more to this strange tale. Included are accounts of two more stories to this larger one from Appalachian Oddity.

Thu, 16 Mar 2023 - 7min - 64 - Possible Bigfoot Sighting - Southern Arkansas, Summer 1997
Welcome to Spooky Appalachia. This week, we are taking a look at a story sent to us by another one of our patrons. This story is of a possible Bigfoot encounter he had as a kid.
I was walking through the forest one summer evening in Southern Arkansas. I had gotten into a small gully when I saw what I thought was a bear. I wasn't sure though it looked very, very humanoid. "Maybe a deformed bear?" I thought... nope! I left a sandwich I was carrying with me on a rock and backed away. When the thing turned around, it was quite human looking! It was about 7-8 feet tall, and had dark brown fur and was extremely bulky looking. It took the sandwich, and walked off ignoring me. As it walked off it bumped into a small tree and knocked it over, it must have been incredibly strong!
I was a little kid at this time, probably 11 years old. I have no proof and no one believed me. But I know a dang bear and that could not have been a bear! I have spent my life in these forests and never seen anything like that before!!
Thanks Jordan, for sending us this story. We believe you! I’m sure a lot of our fans tuning in believe you too. Growing up I’ve spent a lot of time in the woods too. I can’t imagine running into something like that on one of the strolls I used to do through the woods as a kid.
Remember if you have a story you’d like to see get featured here you can email us at webmaster@spookyappalachia.com. As you can see we’ve changed up or format for these stories, so if you like this let us know!

Thu, 09 Mar 2023 - 3min - 63 - Possible Mothman Sighting - Iredell, NC, Oct 2022
This week, we have a story that was sent to us by a member of the Appalachian Paranormal Facebook group. It’s of a possible Mothman sighting that he had back in October 2022.
It started in July 2022 when we went up to the West Virginia state prison for a reptile show. We were maybe 2 hours away from Point Pleasant and thought it would only add an hour onto the drive back home so we figured we would drop by. On the drive I started to get a headache. I thought it was maybe because I was tired but the closer we got the worse it got. As soon as we got through the floodgates of the town I had a feeling in my stomach like going down the first drop on a roller coaster.
Eventually I felt better but fast forward a few months I was walking to work early one morning one morning right before Halloween. It was still dark around 6:00 AM when I saw red circles in a tree and felt a feeling of dread. I thought maybe it was some Halloween decorations, but I checked the next day on my way to work and there were no red lights there. They haven’t been there since. Then about a month after my dad passed so maybe it was or wasn’t just a coincidence, but a warning.
Thank you for sending in this story. We’re really sorry to hear about your father. You have our condolences. That’s a pretty crazy chain of events that happened. As you all know I’ve been to Point Pleasant many times, I’ve never felt anything going there. It actually feels normal to me to be there. Maybe the person you're sensitive to these types of things? Then there were the red eyes coming from up in a tree. That’s a bit spooky, I guess it could have been an owl or a racoon? But that doesn’t explain the feeling of dread. Then a month later there was the passing of their father. Maybe it was an omen as some say?

Thu, 02 Mar 2023 - 4min - 62 - The Squonk: A Creature of Pennsylvania Lumberlore
The squonk, or Lacrimacorpus dissolvens, is noted as “Probably the homeliest animal in the world, and knows it” [1]. Much of our information on the squonk comes from two volumes on Appalachian and upper-midwestern lumberlore, Fearsome Creatures of the Lumberwoods, With a Few Desert and Mountain Beasts by William T. Cox, and Fearsome Critters by Henry H. Tryon. Taken together, their descriptions and accompanying lithographs paint a picture of a morose dog-pig hybrid, hairless and weeping, and covered with warts and moles. According to Cox, “Because of its misfitting skin, which is covered with warts and moles, it is always unhappy; in fact it is said, by people who are best able to judge, to be the most morbid of beasts”.
This melancholy extends beyond its appearance, and it is said that the poor animal weeps constantly. Tryon notes that “He is given to constant weeping over his really upsetting appearance, and can sometimes be tracked by his tear-stained trail”. Cox corroborates this, noting that hunters are often able to follow the squonk by its tear-stained trail, and Tryon notes that these squonk hunts are best performed by moonlight. The squonk is not without its defenses though, as when surprised or frightened, it can dissolve itself into a puddle of tears to escape capture.
Records of the squonk mainly come from the hemlock forests of Pennsylvania. They make their home in these hemlocks, and are active only during the twilight hours, returning to their hemlocks before moonrise, where they can avoid catching a glimpse of their reflection in a moonlit pool, an event that will often bring the squonk to tears. The ancient distribution of the squonk was thought to be much wider, but as the high plains where it roamed gradually turned into swamps, it was forced to try to adapt to water. Between the squonk’s limited cognitive abilities, and the fact that it only evolved webbing on its left feet, it found itself unable to swim, merely going in circles when it tried to enter the water. It finds its hemlock homes of today much more suitable.

Sat, 18 Feb 2023 - 1h 15min - 60 - Doppelganger Encounter - St Albans Sanatorium, July 2022
This week’s story was sent to us by a member of our community named Bill. He had this experience during an investigation at the Famous St. Albans Sanatorium in Radford, Virginia. This occurred during July of 2022.
I was with my group on an investigation at St Albans, I was watching the monitors with the group and two of the ladies came back from where they were supposed to be. I was sitting there watching them on the camera and heard them coming down the hallway. This struck me as very odd since they hadn’t moved. They were still in the room where they were supposed to be. At the same time they came up and looked at me and said “I’ve seen people”, then they turned around and walked back. There were 3 other people in our group that witnessed this. I can’t really explain what happened but it was incredibly freaky! We are pretty sure they were doppelgangers.
Thanks Bill for sending us this story! I have heard of people witnessing doppelgangers at St Albans in the past. For those unfamiliar with the phenomenon, doppelgangers appear in the paranormal folklore quite often. They are a person’s double and are usually a bad omen and it is thought that if a person sees their own doppelganger, they will most likely die shortly after.

Thu, 16 Feb 2023 - 3min - 59 - Possible Mothman Sighting - Floyd County, VA, 2019
For today’s story we’ve been sent another Mothman sighting. This one from Virginia, in Floyd County. This is the first time we’ve been sent a Mothman sighting from Virginia, and us both being from Virginia we were excited to receive it!
Hi my name is Scott, this story took place around Thanksgiving of 2019. I was turkey hunting on my friend's land in Floyd County. It was sometime around 6:00 in the morning, I came up on a group of turkeys in the woods. Keep in mind this is about a mile out in the middle of nowhere in a forest not a soul around and still a little dark. I shot at one of the turkeys and hit it, it fell down dead, the other ones took off. That’s when I heard this god awful screeching sound .I turned and looked in the direction the sound came from up in an old oak tree stood a dark brown figure. It looks like a cross between a bird and a man. It was maybe 7 feet tall, with huge wings and what looked like yellow or red glowing eyes.
About as soon as I saw it, it leapt up out of the tree and flew off headed north. Was it after the group of turkeys? I grabbed the one I shot and booked it out of there. I had no idea what that thing was but knew I just wanted to get home.
Fast forward a few months and it’s the COVID lockdown. I’m watching a documentary on The Mothman on the Travel Channel. The creature they described sure does sound a lot like what I saw! We also ain’t that far from West Virginia. I also saw that The Mothman shows up when something bad is about to happen. Could this have been related to the COVID outbreaks?
Thank you for taking the time to listen to my story. - Scott
Wow thank you Scott for this incredible story. As I mentioned before we are both very excited to receive a Mothman story from our home state. That is something to think about, perhaps Mothman was trying to warn us of the coming COVID outbreak. We did receive another Mothman sighting from 2019, but it was in Michigan. It’s hard to say but definitely something to wonder about.

Thu, 09 Feb 2023 - 8min - 58 - Doppelganger Encounter - Mount Nebo, WV, Fall 2020
Today’s story of a doppelganger encounter comes to us from a member of our community who wishes to be referred to as Jones. She said this occurred at her home in Mount Nebo, West Virginia in the fall of 2020.
Some time in fall of 2020, I almost ran face first into myself from about 5 minutes earlier. I was fully awake and had just showered then got dressed for work. I was on my way back to the bathroom to fix my hair and brush my teeth. As I stepped into the hallway, literally ME - stepped out of the bathroom. I ran almost directly into myself. It obviously scared the crap out of me. I jumped back then screamed. I jumped back hard enough that I physically hit the wall. The copy of myself was wrapped in a towel like I had been just a few minutes before. The copy of me disappeared as quickly as it appeared and the whole interaction lasted about a second or two.
I've always had weird experiences following me. I first went ghost hunting in late middle school and early high school. I also grew up hearing stories about paranormal happenings in my family's past. So, interest in it has always kinda been around. I had a number of paranormal events happen throughout my life - starting in middle school and still happening occasionally. I would be very interested to find others that have had the same "nearly run into doppelganger " experience. I did some digging around online around the time it happened, but never really found anything close.
Thanks Jones for sending us this story!. For those unfamiliar with the phenomenon, doppelgangers appear in the paranormal folklore quite often. They are a person’s double and are usually a bad omen and it is thought that if a person sees their own doppelganger, they will most likely die shortly after.

Thu, 02 Feb 2023 - 4min - 57 - The Story of King's Bend Tunnel - Wetzel County, WV
This week, we’re going to cover the story of the King’s Bend Tunnel, in Wetzel County, West Virginia.
The King’s Bend Tunnel is located in Wetzel County, West Virginia. Also known as Porters Falls No .1 Tunnel. The tunnel is used as a shortcut between Clarksburg, West Virginia and the Ohio river. The tunnel got its name due to its adjacent location from the giant bend in the creek near it called “King’s Bend”.
Over the years there have been many deaths either in or around the tunnel. Starting with the workers who built the tunnel, all the way up to present day tunnel walkers. Because the tunnels are built with a slight curve it's impossible to reach the end of the tunnel from either opening and sound echoes in a way that makes trains seem much further away, which has led to several accidents happening to foot travelers over the years.
There have been several reports of phantom footsteps echoing from inside the mines, or the sounds of workers working away to complete the tunnel, but most stories involve the 'Coffin holes'. The holes are cut into the sides of the tunnel roughly 6 feet tall and 2-3 feet wide meant to accommodate anyone stuck in the tunnel with an oncoming train. People have reported hearing knocking and groans coming from behind the holes. Similar to Tommyknockers in mines.
Perhaps one of the more interesting tales comes from a group of friends who camped out at the area for an overnight fishing trip. The area is well known for brewing a good fishing spot. While doing some night time fishing the group would hear a loud whooshing sound each time they turned out their spotlight accompanied by large ripples in the water.
After returning to the campsite near the tunnel the group began hearing voices echoing off the hillside. At first the group wasn’t alarmed by this and brushed it off as just some people racoon hunting. However, the voices kept getting closer until it sounded like they were practically on top of the group. They could now hear the voices clear as day saying things like, “What are they doing here?” and “They need to leave” then “You shouldn’t be here…”
At this point the group decided to hightail it out of there and head back to their ATVs. Then they saw something that made them freeze in their tracks, standing beside one of the ATVs under a tree was the outline of a tall man in what looked like a hat. No details of the figure could be seen, just blackness. It looked distorted and twisted. After about half a minute the figure darted back to the tunnel, and the group booked it out of there.
To this day trains still run through the tunnel, and not only is it a safety hazard it’s also illegal to enter. Many folks have lost their lives in and around the tunnel. Overall this area sounds really interesting and there are a few other creepy tunnels in the area similar to this one.
Thank you to the anonymous viewer that sent in this story and the photos, but remember to be careful in the future! Also if you have a creepy story you’d like to see featured you can email us at webmaster@spookyappalchia.com.

Sat, 21 Jan 2023 - 1h 21min - 55 - That Time I Saw a UFO - From Appalachian Oddity
This week, we have a story sent to us by our good friend Appalachian Oddity. If you’ve never heard of them, be sure to check out their site and YouTube channel. They have been an awesome resource for our content and an often contributor as well.
When I was a kid, my family and I went to visit a relative’s home on Christmas Eve to open presents. This was in West Virginia, in the late 2000’s I think, and I remember it being dark at the time. On the way to our destination we were driving past what looked like a natural slope between two mountains by the roadside. This spot was also near a railroad crossing. We saw three large red floating lights and at first thought it was a new cell tower.
Then the lights began moving ever so slightly and we saw that they weren’t attached to anything. My father pulled the car over and we all stared at the lights for a while trying to figure out what they were as they hovered gently back and forth over the same spot between the mountains. We could see now that it wasn’t a cell phone tower but none of us at the time jumped to the idea of it being a “UFO.” We still thought it might be part of the landscape or something.
We resolved to check again on our way home to see if it was still there and headed off to my relative’s home for Christmas Eve. Of course, on the way back, the three red lights were completely gone. Therefore it couldn’t have been part of the hillside, it was most likely something flying, though it could still be something explainable in an ordinary way.
It was only years later, after my interest in anomalies, that I was reminded of this when my family mentioned going to see that same relative for Christmas. For the longest time, I held off on telling the story, thinking “it doesn’t count” but when compared to most UFO reports, I’m pretty sure it counts just as much as those do.
Thank you Appalachian Oddity for letting us feature your story. It’s definitely an interesting one. A lot of people I know in this area have a UFO story or two. I have one that I will one day share myself. Remember if you have a story that you’d like to see featured here, you can email us at webmaster@spookyappalachia.com.

Thu, 19 Jan 2023 - 4min - 54 - The Story of Indrid Cold
This week, we are going to look into a tale that has fascinated folks for decades, the story of Indrid Cold of Lanulos.
Our first story occurred on a rainy Wednesday night on November 2nd 1966. A salesman named Woodrow Derenberger was driving home to Mineral Wells, West Virginia from Marietta, Ohio. At around 7:25PM, Woodrow claims that on the intersection of 77 and route 47 he spotted a strange dark gray craft, about 30 to 35 feet long and hovering about 10 inches above the ground. It passed him, then swerved in front of him blocking his path and forced him to stop. The craft had no windows or lights on it, it was charcoal colored and glistened when hit by Woodrow’s headlights.
Soon after landing a figure looking like a normal human male stepped out of a door of the craft. He had dark combed back hair, deeply tanned skin, and looked to be about 35-40 in age. He wore a blue zippered overcoat made of a shiny reflective material with a dark blue button shirt underneath and navy colored pants. The man approached Woodrow’s right side of Woodrow’s car and spoke to him telepathically asking him to roll down his window. He did so, and the craft reportedly lifted off and covered about 50 feet in the air.
At this point the man smiled politely and crossed his arms then asked him many questions telepathically, while maintaining his smile and standing in the rain. Woodrow said that the man asked him many questions, such as who he was and where he lived. Woodrow said that he felt frightened but the man said not to be afraid. The man told Woodrow that his name was Cold and seemed to want to know more about the human race. He later revealed that he was from the planet Lanulos in the Galaxy of Ganymede.
After their conversation, the craft landed and Cold walked back to it. Before entering the door, Cold informed Woodrow that he would visit him again and he did, many times over the years. Woodrow even wrote a book about his experiences “Visitors From Lanulos” It was in a later visit that Cold let Woodrow know his full name of Indrid Cold.
Our second possible sighting occurred in Point Pleasant, West Virginia around the same time as the first sighting. The Lilly family had been reporting poltergeist activity in their home. They had also been seeing diamond shaped lights in the skies at night over their home. One night their daughter Linda woke from sleeping to a man standing over her. This is what Linda had to say about the encounter. "It was a man, a big man. Very broad. I couldn't see his face very well, but I could see that he was grinning at me. He walked around the bed and stood right over me. I screamed again and hid under the covers, when I looked again he was gone."
In early November of 1966, an elderly man reported a similar sighting to the first to Mary Hyre’s newspaper office in Point Pleasant. He claimed he and another workmen were driving home to Point Pleasant from their jobsite in Marietta Ohio. When they got near Parkersburg West Virginia on interstate 77 an elongated object appeared in the sky and descended directly in front of them, forcing them to stop their car. Soon after a normal looking man emerged from the craft. The man driving the car rolled down his window in disbelief, and the strange man approached them. He wore a black jacket, and kept a smile on his face with his arms crossed, hands hidden under his armpits just like Woodrow reported. The stranger asked who they were, where they were from, where they were going, and what time it was. He then strolled back to the dark cylinder and it rose quickly into the chill, drizzling sky.
