- 3066 - Job 9:1-35: If I Only Had an Arbiter
As Job responds to Bildad, Job knows that God is just—but he wonders how many can be just before God. He knows that God is the Creator who is far more powerful than any person, but Job cannot interact with God or see what He is doing. Job knows that God will win in a fight every time, and that is what Job feels God is doing against him at this very moment. Job longs for an arbiter to mediate between himself and God, but he does not know who the arbiter might be. In the fullness of time, God has given us this Mediator—Jesus Christ.

“There Is a Redeemer” is a series on Sharper Iron that studies the book of Job. The suffering of Job raises important questions. Does man fear God for no reason? Shall we receive good from God, and shall we not receive evil? Who can be an arbiter for man? As this book of wisdom literature wrestles with such questions, God reveals to us that He is our Living Redeemer whom we are right to fear, love, and trust above all things.

Tue, 27 Oct 2026 - 54min - 3065 - Job 8:1-22: Just Repent, and God Will Make It Better
Bildad takes a turn to respond to Job. In tactless and hurtful words, he asserts Job’s children surely got what they deserved. However, if Job will simply admit his wrong and plead for God’s mercy, God is sure to make Job’s latter days great. Bildad believes history proves his point—those who forget God perish, while God does not reject blameless men. Like Eliphaz before him, Bildad only makes matters worse for Job.

Mon, 26 Oct 2026 - 54min - 3064 - Job 7:1-21: In God’s Crosshairs
Job’s complaint continues. He compares himself to a slave who works all day yet receives no payment for his labor other than sleepless nights. He turns directly to God with his lament. Job feels God’s gaze upon him as a terror and a nightmare. He wonders why God has made him a target instead of showing mercy and pardon for his iniquities.

Fri, 23 Oct 2026 - 54min - 3063 - Job 6:1-30: The Mirage of Friendship Doesn’t Help Suffering
Job responds to Eliphaz. Job’s suffering is real, and his suffering is heavy. Job has no strength of his own remaining, and now his “friends” have proven themselves treacherous. Job calls upon his friends to show real care and concern for him instead of trying to convict him of sin.

Thu, 22 Oct 2026 - 55min - 3062 - Job 5:1-27: Adverse Axioms
Eliphaz continues his response to Job. He knows from experience that Job’s affliction hasn’t come from nowhere. Eliphaz advises Job to seek God; if Job will do his part in repenting, then Eliphaz is convinced that God will do His part in restoring Job. Eliphaz is sure that he is right, and he smugly tells Job to receive such wisdom for his own good. Throughout his speech, Eliphaz’s platitudes fall quite short of the real comfort Job needs.

Wed, 21 Oct 2026 - 54min - 3061 - Job 4:1-21: Eliphaz Tells a Ghost Story
Eliphaz begins to respond to Job. Whereas Job had once been the teacher, Eliphaz claims that now Job is being taught. Eliphaz says that he has seen that the innocent do not perish; instead, those who have iniquity are those who suffer. Eliphaz even claims that a spirit came to him by night to reinforce the point. If even angels can fall, then Eliphaz is sure that Job must have done something wrong.

Tue, 20 Oct 2026 - 54min - 3060 - Job 3:1-26: Life without God Is Worse than Death
After seven days of silence with his friends, Job speaks first. With vivid imagery, he curses the day of his birth and says it would be better if he were now dead. Yet this is not a despairing desire for death. The key to understanding Job's lament is the reality that Job's suffering has made him unsure if God remains for him. The thing that Job fears is that God is now his enemy. If that is the case, then Job has no hope at all, for life without God is worse than death.

Mon, 19 Oct 2026 - 55min - 3059 - Job 2:1-13: Receiving Good and Evil from God
The scene in the heavenly council from Job 1 replays in Job 2. The LORD again taunts Satan with the righteousness of Job, yet Satan challenges God once again. Job's own health remains, the accuser says. God keeps Satan on a leash, refusing to let the accuser kill Job even as he strikes the righteous man with terrible sores. Job refuses to fall into the despair of his wife in the midst of his terrible suffering. When three of Job's friends hear of the evil that has happened, they come and sit silently with him for seven days.

Fri, 16 Oct 2026 - 58min - 3058 - Job 1:6-22: Does Man Fear God for No Reason?
The backstory for Job is found in God's heavenly council. There, God taunts Satan that Job is a righteous man. Satan challenges God, however, claiming that Job only fears God because of all the things God has given. God allows Satan to take away Job's possessions and family. The news of one disaster right after another hits Job all at once. Yet he responds faithfully: "The LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD."

Wed, 14 Oct 2026 - 02min - 3056 - Job 1:1-5: Is Job God's Enemy?
The book of Job is wisdom literature, in which God's Word helps us to wrestle with important questions of faith and life. Job's great suffering leads to a debate between him and his friends, which is finally concluded by the thundering and authoritative voice of God. As the book of Job begins, Job is introduced as living an ideal life economically, socially, and religiously. Yet the name Job is related to a word that means "enemy." Could Job actually be God's enemy? What will happen if Job thinks he is God's enemy? The stage is set for the rest of the book.

Wed, 14 Oct 2026 - 55min - 3055 - Matthew 28:11-20: To All Nations
When the guards give their report of events at Jesus’ tomb, the Sanhedrin bribes them to say that the disciples stole Jesus’ body. Their lie has sent this false gospel into the world still today. Nonetheless, Jesus has a true Gospel to send into all the world. He gathers His disciples to Himself in Galilee. From there, He sends them to all nations with His authority to make disciples through Baptism and teaching. This promise Jesus will keep, for He is with His Church into the ages of ages.

Tue, 13 Oct 2026 - 52min - 3054 - Matthew 28:1-10: The Victory Remained with Life
At dawn of the first day of the week, the third day since Jesus had died, the two Marys went to see Jesus’ tomb. They expected Jesus would be dead, despite Jesus’ promise. A divine earthquake and a heavenly angel interrupted their expectations. The only dead men at Jesus’ tomb were the guards attempting to keep Jesus inside. The angel announced the good news that the Crucified One had risen, as He said. When the women did as the Word of God had instructed them, Jesus met them personally, and they worshipped their Risen Lord in His body. Jesus sent them to His disciples, who were also His brothers, to send them to Galilee, where they too would see Jesus.

Mon, 12 Oct 2026 - 55min - 3053 - Matthew 27:57-66: Christ Jesus Lay in Death’s Strong Bands
Joseph of Arimathea uses his wealth in service to the Lord by providing a tomb for Jesus. Through Joseph, God fulfills the Word He spoke through Isaiah. From an earthly perspective, things look final. Joseph and the women who witness Jesus’ burial act on the belief that Jesus will remain dead. Ironically, the enemies of Jesus are the ones who remember what Jesus had said concerning His resurrection. These enemies foolishly think they can hold Jesus in His grave. As Jesus rests in His tomb until the third day, the stage is set for His Word of resurrection to be fulfilled. As Jesus went into His grave and came out, so will all who believe in Him.

Fri, 09 Oct 2026 - 54min - 3052 - Matthew 27:51-56: A Strange and Dreadful Strife
The signs accompanying Jesus’ death provide God’s testimony for the victory that He has won. The tearing of the temple curtain showed that the once-for-all sacrifice has been made by Jesus so that He is our true and only Mediator before God. The earthquake showed the reality of God’s judgment and served as a confirmation of Jesus’ teaching. The raising of the saints showed that Jesus’ death was life-giving. Of all people, the Roman centurion realized that Jesus’ death showed Him to be the Son of God. As the women looked on, they saw that Jesus had truly died. At that moment, He was ministering to them far more than they were ministering to Him.

Thu, 08 Oct 2026 - 54min - 3051 - Matthew 27:45-50: O Darkest Woe!
For three hours, miraculous darkness covers the land as Judgment Day comes upon Jesus on the cross. He experiences the suffering of hell as the Father forsakes Him. Nonetheless, as Jesus prays Psalm 22, He does so not in despair but trusting in His Father’s will. As the crowds continue to doubt and mock Jesus, He gives up His life for the sake of sinners. Because God has died for us on the cross, this day truly is Good Friday.

Wed, 07 Oct 2026 - 52min - 3050 - Matthew 27:27-44: O Sacred Head, Now Wounded
Pilate’s soldiers treat Jesus with cruel mockery. Even though they do not believe He is a King, Jesus truly reigns as He is crowned with thorns and enthroned on His cross. Through the suffering of Christ, the eyes of faith see the glory of God to win our salvation. Jesus refuses to come down from His cross, even as diabolical temptation calls out to Him from the religious leaders and bystanders. Jesus resolutely remains on His cross so that we would believe in Him as the Son of God, our Savior.

Tue, 06 Oct 2026 - 53min - 3049 - Matthew 27:11-26: His Blood Be on Us
As Pilate examines Jesus for guilt, the governor is amazed at the Lord’s silence to His accusers. Pilate attempts to use his custom of releasing a prisoner at the Passover to release Jesus. The dream given to Pilate’s wife reveals that Jesus truly is innocent, yet Pilate’s passive plan backfires as the religious leaders persuade the crowd to plead for Jesus’ crucifixion. Pilate’s handwashing does not remove his guilt, even as the crowd cries out willing to accept responsibility. In a wondrous irony, Jesus is shedding His innocent blood precisely to place it upon sinners and make us clean.

Mon, 05 Oct 2026 - 53min - 3048 - Matthew 26:69-27:10: Peter’s Denial and Judas’ Despair
Although Peter follows Jesus at a distance, Peter’s threefold denial of Jesus happens just as the Lord had foretold. With growing vehemence, Peter refuses to acknowledge any connection to Jesus, until the rooster crows after the third time. Peter recalls Jesus’ words, and the apostle leaves with bitter tears. As Jesus goes to His trial before Pilate, Judas regrets his betrayal of the Innocent One, but the chief priests fail to point to the absolution found in the blood of Christ. Instead, they take the money paid to Judas to buy a field for burial. Even though their action fails to cover up their guilt and evil, through the action, the Scripture is fulfilled.

Fri, 02 Oct 2026 - 53min - 3047 - Matthew 26:57-68: Who Is Really on Trial?
As the Sanhedrin meets in the darkness, they have already determined a guilty verdict for Jesus, regardless of the evidence. Their initial inability to find even false witnesses to agree on an accusation against Jesus shows their corruption and evil. When two witnesses do agree on something close to what Jesus said, the chief priest puts the question to Jesus directly. Despite the attempts of the Sanhedrin to keep things quiet, they provide Jesus the opportunity to proclaim the truth of who He is. As their hatred of Jesus becomes violence, they are shown to have failed their trial, while Jesus is shown to be entirely innocent.

Thu, 01 Oct 2026 - 54min - 3046 - Matthew 26:47-56: The Betrayer’s Kiss
Just as Jesus said, one of His own twelve disciples delivers Him into the hands of those who desire to kill Him. In an awful irony, Judas uses a sign of greatest affection for the deepest betrayal. Although divine deliverance is only a prayer away for Jesus, He goes to His arrest willingly. He tells His disciples to put their swords away, and He reminds the crowds of His innocence. As Jesus is led away to trial and the disciples scatter, all that must take place happens in accordance with the Scriptures.

Wed, 30 Sep 2026 - 53min - 3045 - Matthew 26:30-46: Thy Will Be Done
Jesus heads to the Mount of Olives with singing. There, He forthrightly tells His disciples what is about to happen to Him and to them, all in fulfillment of the Scriptures. In Gethsemane, Jesus prays to His Father knowing exactly what He is about to face, yet He does so in obedience to the Father’s will. Although Peter, James, and John cannot stay awake and pray with Jesus, the Lord continues resolutely toward His suffering and death.

Tue, 29 Sep 2026 - 53min - 3044 - Matthew 26:17-29: Jesus’ Passover
Jesus observes His Passover with His family. He instructs His disciples to make the necessary preparations for the meal that He will bring to fulfillment. As He eats with His disciples, Jesus tells His disciples that one of them will hand Him over. Judas’ own words reveal him as the betrayer. Nonetheless, Jesus remains focused on the gifts that He has come to give. He brings the Passover meal to fulfillment by giving the Holy Supper of His body and His blood to His disciples.

Mon, 28 Sep 2026 - 54min - 3043 - Matthew 26:1-16: The Beauty and Value of Jesus' Passion
Jesus continues to move resolutely toward His crucifixion. Although the chief priests and elders believe they are accomplishing their plan, Jesus' suffering and death is truly the Father's will for the salvation of sinners. A woman who anoints Jesus with expensive ointment receives scorn from the disciples, but Jesus teaches them that her action has shown that His suffering, death, and burial truly is valuable and beautiful. Judas, however, does not believe. He places a paltry value on Jesus and agrees to betray the Lord. Nonetheless, God's will goes forward unthwarted.

Fri, 25 Sep 2026 - 56min - 3042 - Matthew 25:31-46: Sheep and Goats
Jesus concludes His Olivette Discourse by describing His coming again in glory on the Last Day as a shepherd who separates sheep from goats. The sheep are His righteous ones. They are righteous because they have been blessed by the Father from the foundation of the world, and that righteousness was seen by the way they received Jesus by receiving His messengers. On the other hand, the goats are the unrighteous. They receive condemnation not because Jesus has chosen them for damnation, but because they have chosen it for themselves. That reality was made evident in the way they did not receive Jesus by rejecting His messengers. Jesus' teaching in this section invites all hearers of the Word to consider the way they receive the messengers of Jesus, so that they would rightly receive Him.

Thu, 24 Sep 2026 - 53min - 3041 - Matthew 25:14-30: The Faithful Stewardship of God's Gifts
Jesus' parable of the talents teaches His people how to live faithfully now awaiting His return. God gives to His children according to their ability. Because His gifts come from His love, the proper response is to put those gifts to work in faithfulness to God, knowing that He is our loving Master whose gifts always bear fruit. The third servant in the parable illustrates the faithlessness of inaction. This servant's wickedness is revealed in his wrong faith toward his master. Because this servant does not know his master truly, he simply buries the master's property. However, when we trust in God as the loving Father He truly is, we steward His gifts faithfully now, awaiting His commendation on the Last Day.

Wed, 23 Sep 2026 - 56min - 3040 - Matthew 25:1-13: With Bridal Care Yourselves Prepare
Jesus tells a parable that illustrates what it means for His Church to always watch for the unknown day and hour of His return. He tells a story of ten virgins whose role is to greet the bridegroom's arrival. Five are wise by having oil to keep their lamps lit when the bridegroom arrives later than they had anticipated. Five are foolish, for their lack of oil leaves them far away when the bridegroom enters his feast. With the door locked, it is now too late for these foolish ones to enter. By this parable, Jesus teaches His Church that constant readiness for His return comes through the wisdom of hearing, believing, and putting into practice His Words. When we approach the Last Day through this faith by grace, that Day is a Day of great joy!

Tue, 22 Sep 2026 - 53min - 3039 - Matthew 24:36-51: No One Knows the Day—So Watch!
After answering the disciples' first question concerning the destruction of Jerusalem, Jesus now turns to answer the disciples' second question concerning His coming in glory. Jesus is direct. No one knows the day or the hour. Those who attempt to predict the date reveal themselves to be false teachers. Instead, Jesus compares His second coming to the suddenness of the flood in the days of Noah. Thus, Jesus calls all men to watch and be ready through faith. As we watch for our Lord's return, He teaches us to live with wisdom as His faithful servants. In this way, we approach the Last Day not with the terror of unbelief but with the joy of faith.

Mon, 21 Sep 2026 - 54min - 3038 - Matthew 24:23-35: It's Not the End of the World as We Know It Yet
Jesus reiterates the importance of watching out for false teachers in the days leading up to the fall of Jerusalem. No false teacher will be needed to add to anything Jesus has said concerning the imminence of the temple's destruction. Jesus describes those days surrounding Jerusalem's fall with apocalyptic language reminiscent of the Old Testament prophets. The day of the LORD that came upon Jerusalem in AD 70 does foreshadow Christ's second coming, yet the destruction of the temple was not the end of the world. Even as created things pass away as we wait for the Last Day, Jesus gives us the confidence that His Words endure forever.

Fri, 18 Sep 2026 - 54min - 3037 - Matthew 24:3-22: Wars and Famines and Earthquakes—Oh My!
The disciples ask Jesus two questions that prompt His last great discourse in the Gospel according to St. Matthew. They want to know when Jerusalem will be destroyed, and they want to know what sign will announce His second coming. Jesus answers both questions in order, careful not to allow the disciples to conflate the two events. This text speaks about the fall of Jerusalem. Jesus warns His disciples to stay alert through wars and disasters. Through persecution, they must endure in proclaiming the Gospel. When they see the abomination of desolation in the temple, they must flee from Jerusalem, knowing that God is working, even then, for the sake of His elect.

Thu, 17 Sep 2026 - 54min - 3036 - Matthew 23:37-24:2: What Jesus Wanted, Jerusalem Didn't
Jesus speaks Jerusalem's name twice with love and sadness, for its reputation has not lived up to its name. Instead of being the city of peace, Jerusalem has been the city that kills the prophets, and the same is about to happen again to Jesus. Even though His will was to gather Jerusalem into His refuge, Jerusalem's will was the opposite. In foretelling the destruction of the city and the temple, Jesus gives what Jerusalem wanted. He leaves the temple and goes to the Mount of Olives, in the same way the prophet Ezekiel saw the glory of the LORD leave the temple. Jesus will not let His disciples be impressed by the grandeur of the temple's stones, for those stones will be toppled. Rather, He teaches His disciples that He is the place where God's name dwells.

Wed, 16 Sep 2026 - 56min - 3035 - Matthew 23:25-36: Whoa—Woe! (Part 2)
Jesus continues to speak woe to the scribes and Pharisees. Their hypocrisy is evident in their concern for outwardly upright behavior while being inwardly wicked due to their rejection of God's Word and His Son, Jesus. As the fathers of the scribes and Pharisees murdered the prophets, so now the scribes and Pharisees are about to spill the innocent blood of the Son of God. Nonetheless, by directing these words directly to each individual man hearing Him, Jesus calls each one to repent and believe even now, before it is too late.

Tue, 15 Sep 2026 - 55min - 3034 - Matthew 23:13-24: Whoa—Woe! (Part 1)
Jesus speaks woe repeatedly to the scribes and Pharisees for their hypocrisy of claiming to know the Scriptures but refusing to believe in Him. When they spread their teaching, they only evangelize others for hell. Their hypocrisy blinds them to the truth of the temple as the house of God who dwells among His people with life and forgiveness. As the scribes and Pharisees focus on the minutiae of the Law, they miss the big picture of God's mercy and faithfulness. Even with such direct and harsh words, Jesus shows love to these men and calls them to repentance.

Mon, 14 Sep 2026 - 54min - 3033 - Matthew 23:1-12: He Scatters the Proud
Having answered His enemies’ temptations three times now, Jesus takes the offensive during Holy Week. He warns the crowds and His disciples against the scribes and Pharisees. Although they rightly read the Word of God, which must be obeyed, their preaching and their practice are full of deceit and hypocrisy which must not be obeyed. Their preaching only proclaims the burden of the Law, with no salvation from the Gospel. Their concern for earthly glory only exacerbates the problem. In contrast, Jesus upholds the life of a servant as the paradigm for all who are members of His Church, for we know that God is the One who exalts us.

Fri, 11 Sep 2026 - 55min - 3032 - Matthew 22:34-46: The Law and the Prophets Proclaim the Christ
The Pharisees try to tempt Jesus one more time by sending a lawyer from among them to ask about the greatest commandment in the Law. Jesus responds by refusing to separate the two tables of the Law from each other. The love of God and the love of neighbor go hand-in-hand. Even more than that, the Law, together with the prophets, paints a picture of the Christ who has come to fulfill all things in place of sinners. Because the Christ is both David’s son and David’s Lord, the Christ is the only Savior.

Thu, 10 Sep 2026 - 54min - 3031 - Matthew 22:23-33: Without the Resurrection, You’re Sad, You See
The Sadducees take their turn at trying to trap Jesus by presenting a story that pits the resurrection against levirate marriage. Because of the lawfulness of all the marriages presented in their case study, they are sure they have proved the resurrection to be ludicrous. Jesus tells them outright that they are wrong because they don’t know the Bible or God’s power. If they realized that the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob is the God of the living, they would know that the resurrection must be a reality—and it is!

Wed, 09 Sep 2026 - 54min - 3030 - Matthew 22:15-22: Render to Caesar? Sure. Render to God? Absolutely!
The Pharisees and Herodians form an unlikely alliance during Holy Week in an effort to trap Jesus. They believe they have Him cornered with a question about the lawfulness of paying taxes to the Roman government. Jesus lures them into their own trap as they bring out a coin for the tax and admit whose likeness is on the coin. Jesus’ proverbial answer acknowledges Caesar’s place in God’s order, but more importantly teaches us to recognize God’s rule over us and every aspect of our lives.

Jesus tells yet a third parable to the religious leaders during Holy Week; this time He compares God’s reign in the world to a King who hosts a wedding feast for His Son. The religious leaders have made every excuse not to come to Jesus in faith, and they are preparing to kill Him as they have killed the prophets before Him. This brings about God’s judgment, but He will have His feast full. Those whom He invites must come on His terms, wearing the wedding garments of faith. To come in any other way is to invite the condemnation of the King.

Jesus tells the religious leaders another parable set in a vineyard, drawing from the imagery of Isaiah 5. Like the tenants in the parable, the religious leaders have not produced the fruit God required, and they have instead mistreated God’s servants, the prophets. Now, they are on the verge of killing God’s own Son and bringing down upon themselves His judgment. Through this parable, Jesus proclaims Himself as the fulfillment of Psalm 118. Although the religious leaders recognize the parable is about them, they still refuse to believe.

Fri, 04 Sep 2026 - 55min - 3027 - Matthew 21:23-32: The Question of Authority
As Jesus continues teaching in the temple in Holy Week, the religious leaders demand that Jesus state His authority for acting and speaking in the manner He does. Marvelously evading their trap, Jesus sets a trap of His own as He asks about the source of John’s baptism. When the religious leaders refuse to answer, Jesus refuses to answer their question directly. Instead, He begins a series of parables that shows the faithlessness of the religious leaders. Although they should have been sons of God, they have refused to listen to God by refusing the preaching of both John and Jesus, while notorious sinners have been welcomed into God’s kingdom for receiving their preaching joyfully.

Thu, 03 Sep 2026 - 53min - 3026 - Matthew 21:12-22: Turned Tables and Fruitless Figs
Upon entering Jerusalem, Jesus goes to the temple, where He overturns tables and drives out moneychangers. What should have been Jesus’ house of prayer has become a den of robbers, stealing the mercy of God from His people. The blind and the lame come to Jesus to receive mercy from Him, despite the ongoing protests of the chief priests and scribes. A fig tree serves as Jesus’ object lesson for the coming judgment against all who put their hope in a building rather than trusting in the Word of God.

Wed, 02 Sep 2026 - 52min - 3025 - Matthew 21:1-11: Hosanna to the Humble King
Jesus enters Jerusalem according to His plan and purpose. He gives specific instructions to two disciples concerning His mount for His ride into Jerusalem. Jesus’ words are fulfilled, just as the Word of God from the Old Testament is fulfilled. Jesus comes as the humble King. The crowd overflows with exuberance to see Jesus enter Jerusalem in this way, and they welcome Him with joy. Although they may not have understood the full import of their words, they were right to sing Hosanna to Jesus as the Son of David. He has revealed Himself as more than a Prophet; He is the Savior!

Tue, 01 Sep 2026 - 55min - 3024 - Matthew 20:29-34: Two Blind Men Who See
Jesus passes through Jericho as He nears Jerusalem. There, two blind men beg for mercy from Jesus because they see Him truly as the Son of David. When the crowd tries to silence the men, their prayers grow louder. Jesus asks the two men the same question He had asked the mother of the sons of Zebedee, and these two blind men ask for something Jesus has come to grant. He grants them physical sight, matching their spiritual sight. Unlike a previous healing, after this miracle, Jesus does not tell the men to be silent. As Holy Week draws near, the time has come for the world to see what it means that Jesus is the Son of David.

Mon, 31 Aug 2026 - 52min - 3023 - Matthew 20:17-28: The Son of Man Serves and Ransoms Sinners
Jesus explicitly tells His disciples of His coming suffering, death, and resurrection for a third time. Even as He reveals more details about what will happen, the disciples’ misunderstanding only grows. James and John, along with their mother, ask Jesus for positions of worldly greatness. Jesus’ answer begins to reveal that the true greatness of His kingdom is found in the cross. When all the disciples join in misunderstanding, Jesus teaches them that life in His kingdom is great by way of service to others. This is true because of who Jesus is. He has served us sinners by sacrificing His life in place of ours.

Fri, 28 Aug 2026 - 55min - 3022 - Matthew 19:27-20:16: Grace Isn’t Fair
Jesus reassures His disciples that following Him is worth it, both now and eternally. Yet the disciples dare never become prideful or forget that God reigns as King according to His grace. Jesus tells a parable about a master who hires workers for his vineyard throughout the day. When the time to pay the workers arrives, each of the workers receives the same wage. Those who worked the entire day feel cheated, yet the master reminds them of his great generosity. In a similar way, God has been generous in grace to us sinners by making us members of His kingdom. No matter how long we have been in the Church, and no matter how much work we have done for the Lord, we rejoice to belong to His kingdom by His grace alone.

Thu, 27 Aug 2026 - 54min - 3021 - Matthew 19:13-26: The Impossible
Jesus will not allow His disciples to keep the little children away, because those who enter the kingdom come to Jesus precisely in the dependence and need of such little children. In that context, the rich young man exemplifies the completely wrong approach to Jesus. When this man assumes that his own goodness will earn eternal life, Jesus uses the Law, attempting to lead the man to despair of his own goodness and look instead to the goodness of God. When the man rejects Jesus’ Word, Jesus teaches His disciples that riches easily become a stumbling block to entering God’s kingdom. Although it is impossible for man to enter salvation by his strength, God has done the impossible by saving sinners.

Wed, 26 Aug 2026 - 54min - 3020 - Matthew 19:1-12: What God Has Joined Together
As Jesus draws closer to Jerusalem, Pharisees ask Jesus to give His opinion in an ongoing debate concerning lawful reasons for divorce. Although their question comes from ill intent, Jesus sees through their test. He points them back to God’s institution of marriage. God designed marriage as the lifelong union of one man and one woman. Although the hardness of sinful hearts may lead to divorce, God’s intention is that marriage last until death. When the disciples question Jesus further, He upholds the value of celibacy for those who have received this divine gift.

Tue, 25 Aug 2026 - 55min - 3019 - Matthew 18:21-35: Forgiven and Forgiving
Peter recognizes that Jesus has been teaching about forgiveness, but he has not yet grasped the abundance of God’s mercy. Jesus calls His disciples to forgive freely without measure because God has forgiven us freely without measure. To illustrate this, Jesus tells a parable of a servant whose astronomical debt is forgiven by his master. When that same servant has a fellow servant who owes him a significant but much smaller amount, he refuses forgiveness. In a similar way, the refusal to forgive shows that there is no faith in Christ’s forgiveness, whereas our forgiveness of someone who has sinned against us is simply our confession of the reality that Christ has died for all.

Jesus highlights the greatness of His little ones by saying that their angels always see the Father’s face. When Jesus’ disciples focus on their Father, they will share in the concern of the angels for the little ones of Jesus’ kingdom. His care for His little ones shows through His activity as the Good Shepherd who seeks and saves the lost. In the same way, Christians do not neglect sin that threatens the Church, but in love, Christians seek for reconciliation and forgiveness for the sake of the health of the family of God.

Fri, 21 Aug 2026 - 54min - 3017 - Matthew 18:1-9: Like Children
Jesus’ disciples show their continued misunderstanding of His teaching by their question concerning greatness in His kingdom. Jesus flips their expectations upside down by placing a child in their midst and telling them that those who are needy and dependent like children are the only ones who enter the kingdom of heaven. This is what the disciples must realize about themselves and each other as fellow members of Jesus’ kingdom. The care that is evident among those who are a part of Jesus’ kingdom and the concern against falling into sin both stem from this gracious reality.

When Jesus descends the mountain of His transfiguration, the nine disciples left below have failed to cast out a demon-possessed boy. After lamenting their lack of faith, Jesus heals the boy and encourages His disciples to have the faith of a mustard seed, that is, faith that grows in trust of His words. Despite Jesus’ teaching, the disciples continue to have distress over His coming suffering, death, and resurrection. Nonetheless, as Jesus provides a remarkable catch to Peter, Jesus teaches that His coming death and resurrection do make all believers sons of His kingdom.

The presence of Moses and Elijah with Jesus confirms Him as the true God. Peter’s excited but misguided speech is interrupted by the Father’s voice, who commands the disciples to listen to Jesus. Tue, 18 Aug 2026 - 53min - 3014 - Matthew 16:21-28: Dying to Follow Jesus
After Peter’s glorious confession, Jesus makes sure His disciples know what it means for Him to be the Christ. As the Anointed One of God, Jesus must go to Jerusalem to suffer, die, and rise. Peter and the other disciples cannot fathom this, and Peter has the audacity to take Jesus aside and correct Him. Jesus puts this satanic temptation behind Him and tells His disciples to focus on the things of God—namely, the cross. Those who follow Jesus will bear the cross, yet even though they lose their lives for His sake, they will truly have found their lives eternally.

In a pagan area away from Jerusalem, Jesus questions His disciples concerning what others say about Himself. While the answers given include elements of truth, none are complete. Jesus turns the question to the disciples themselves. Who do THEY say Jesus is? Peter speaks up for the whole group with a confession of faith that comes not from Peter’s wisdom but from God’s revelation. Jesus promises that He will build His Church on the rock of the firm foundation of this confession. Although the time to proclaim Peter’s confession has not arrived in Matthew 16, for the Church today the time is now to proclaim to all that Jesus is the Christ, so that those who believe find an open heaven.

Fri, 14 Aug 2026 - 58min - 3012 - Matthew 16:1-12: Leaven Doesn’t Know What Time It Is
The Pharisees and Sadducees continue to refuse to believe in Jesus, and they insincerely ask Him for a sign. Jesus rebukes them for knowing how to recognize the coming weather but for failing to recognize the coming of the Christ. Therefore, Jesus refuses them a sign other than the one He has already offered, the sign of Jonah. The disciples miss what Jesus means when He speaks of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees, assuming that He is talking about food. Jesus rebukes them and reminds them of His two feeding miracles, teaching that they should look first for the kingdom of God, which is given through faith to both Jews and Gentiles.

Jesus continues His compassionate ministry in Galilee by teaching and healing great crowds. As they come to Him with great urgency, Jesus heals their disabilities. As the crowds glorify the God of Israel, Jesus tells the disciples His will of feeding the crowds. The disciples forget Jesus’ recent miracle of feeding a large crowd, but their faltering faith does not prevent Jesus from accomplishing His will. He takes the initiative and multiplies the food with abundance for the sake of satisfying the great crowds, once again anticipating the gift of His Holy Supper.

Wed, 12 Aug 2026 - 54min - 3010 - Matthew 15:21-28: The Son of David Has Mercy on Dogs
Historically, the people of Tyre and Sidon were enemies of God’s people. It’s no wonder, then, that the Evangelist draws our attention to the presence of a Canaanite woman there who confesses the truth about Jesus as the Son of David as she prays for His mercy upon her daughter. Jesus’ seemingly enigmatic responses throughout teach His disciples about the nature of His ultimate ministry to Gentiles, even as Jesus also tests the woman’s faith. Despite Jesus’ harsh responses, she continues to cling to Him, knowing that she is a Gentile sinner but that He is the generous God who has enough for her to have some crumbs. Jesus vindicates her faith in Him and gives her the mercy He loves to give.

Tue, 11 Aug 2026 - 55min - 3009 - Matthew 15:1-20: Handwashing Doesn’t Make You Righteous
The opposition against Jesus escalates when the Pharisees and scribes criticize Jesus’ disciples for not washing their hands. Although the man-made traditions surrounding God’s Law may have had good intentions, Jesus rebukes these men who have let their traditions replace God’s Word. To the entire crowd, Jesus teaches that true uncleanness comes not from without but from within. Jesus patiently teaches His disciples the same reality concerning the true defilement of man. People are not sinners because they sin. People sin because they are sinners. Therefore, only the Gospel of Jesus Christ can bring salvation to us.

Mon, 10 Aug 2026 - 55min - 3008 - Matthew 14:22-36: Walking on Water
When Jesus sends His disciples across the sea by boat, He dismisses the crowds and goes by Himself to pray. As the disciples’ boat goes with difficulty across the sea, Jesus walks on the water to them, showing Himself to be the Maker and Ruler of all creation. The disciples initially react in fear, but Jesus takes away their fear by His Word. He answers Peter's bold request to walk on the water, but Peter’s fear causes him to sink. Though the disciples’ faith falters, they worship Jesus as the Son of God on the boat. On the other side of the sea, the Son of God continues to heal those who are sick.

Fri, 07 Aug 2026 - 56min - 3007 - Matthew 14:13-21: Food of Compassion
Upon hearing of John’s death, Jesus withdraws by boat to a desolate place alone. When the crowds follow Him on foot, Jesus does not react with anger or annoyance, but with compassion. In that compassion, He heals the sick all day long. When the disciples ask Jesus to send the crowds away to eat, Jesus calls on them to feed the crowds. The disciples recognize their own helplessness and put food in Jesus’ hands. Jesus multiplies the loaves and fish to satisfy over five thousand people. By this miracle, Jesus shows His generosity for His people and His desire to host His people, pointing forward to the later gift of His Holy Supper.

Thu, 06 Aug 2026 - 53min - 3006 - Matthew 14:1-12: A Blessed Death
When Herod the tetrarch hears the miracles of Jesus, Herod believes John has been raised from the dead. The Evangelist recounts the story of how John was martyred, going back to his imprisonment for preaching God’s Word against Herod’s adultery. Although Herod has authority, everyone around him exercises power over him, from Herodias to Herodias’ daughter to the crowds. Although Herod cowardly puts John to death, the Word of God that John preached endures forever. John’s death points forward to Christ’s death, and Christ’s resurrection promises John’s resurrection.

Wed, 05 Aug 2026 - 52min - 3005 - Matthew 13:51-58: The Blessed Virgin’s Son Goes Home
Jesus concludes His discourse of parables by asking His disciples about their understanding. Their affirmative answer is true because they do believe in Jesus, even if their knowledge will still falter. Having been trained for the kingdom of heaven, Jesus makes His disciples true scribes who find the treasures of the Scriptures revealed in Him. Tragically, that does not take place when Jesus preaches in His hometown. The residents there falsely assume they know Jesus because they think they know His family. Because of this unbelief, Jesus does not do many mighty works there.

Tue, 04 Aug 2026 - 54min - 3004 - Matthew 13:44-50: A Treasure, a Pearl, and a Net
Jesus again tells two short parables with similar meaning. He compares God’s reign to someone who searches to find something very valuable, and when he finds it, he sells everything to buy it. While Christians should value God’s kingdom above all else, Jesus tells these two parables to teach us how He has in love given up all that is His to make us His own. This comforts the disciples of Jesus as they live now waiting for the close of the age when believers will be separated from unbelievers and God’s vindication of the righteous will be made manifest.

Mon, 03 Aug 2026 - 53min - 3003 - Matthew 13:31-35: The Mustard Seed Leavens the Whole Lump
Through two short parables that use the images of a mustard seed and leaven, Jesus makes a similar point. Both a mustard seed and leaven are small and seem insignificant, yet over time, both bring substantial growth. In a similar way, God’s reign as King may seem insignificant right now in the ministry of Jesus, but the Lord promises that His reign will become a home for many people. Jesus’ parables bring about a fulfillment of God’s Word from Psalm 78.

Fri, 31 Jul 2026 - 56min - 3002 - Matthew 13:24-30, 36-43: The Parable of the Weeds
Jesus tells the crowds another parable that uses the image of farming. A master sows good seed in his field, but an enemy sows weeds right on top of the good seed. When the servants ask about pulling the weeds, the master commands that both be left to grow until they are separated at the harvest. The disciples receive Jesus’ explanation of this parable privately, and He focuses their attention on the harvest, that is, the end of the age. At that time, the angels will separate the unrighteous from the righteous. Until that time, the Church is called to patient endurance and trust in Christ, the King.

Thu, 30 Jul 2026 - 56min - 3001 - Matthew 13:10-17: Blessed Eyes and Ears
When Jesus’ disciples ask Him why He is now speaking in the parables, Jesus explains that His parables both reveal and hide the truth. To the disciples, further revelation is given; to the crowds, the truth is given but remains hidden without faith. In this way, Jesus’ ministry to the crowds fulfills the call the LORD gave to Isaiah. Throughout Jesus’ teaching, the disciples remain blessed, for they are seeing and hearing the fulfillment of the Scriptures.

Wed, 29 Jul 2026 - 55min - 3000 - Matthew 13:1-9, 18-23: The Parable of the Sower
Jesus boards a boat on the Sea of Galilee to begin His third great discourse in the Gospel according to St. Matthew. As He speaks to the crowds in parables, He uses stories from everyday life to teach how God is reigning as King. The story of the sower includes the unusual detail that this sower casts his seed even in unfruitful places. Through the parable, Jesus reveals to His disciples various ways that the Word of God is heard and encourages them to proclaim that Word persistently.

Tue, 28 Jul 2026 - 52min - 2999 - Matthew 12:38-50: Jesus’ Family Recognizes the Sign of Jonah
Although Jesus has just healed a demon-possessed man, some scribes and Pharisees ask Jesus for another sign. Jesus refuses to give any sign except the sign of Jonah— that is, Jesus’ own death and resurrection. He warns His opponents of further rejection of His work. To do so is to invite further demonic oppression. When some of Jesus’ family come looking for Him, He reminds those listening that His family is first and foremost defined by faith in Him.

Mon, 27 Jul 2026 - 54min - 2998 - Matthew 12:15-37: Binding Beelzebul
Jesus withdraws from those who are ready to destroy Him because the hour of His death has not yet come. After He heals a demon-oppressed man, the Pharisees renew their claim that Jesus casts out demons by the prince of demons. Jesus points out the error of their logic and proclaims that He has come as the One who binds Satan and rescues people from the devil’s deadly domain. Those who persistently reject this Gospel reject the Holy Spirit’s work of salvation for them; their words are the fruit that give evidence of what is in their hearts.

The Pharisees question Jesus for allowing His disciples to pluck heads of grain on the Sabbath, accusing Him of allowing work on the day of rest. Jesus makes it plain from the Scriptures that He is the Lord of the Sabbath, and His disciples are keeping the commandment by being with Him. As Jesus enters a synagogue, His enemies challenge Him concerning healing on the Sabbath. Jesus does the proper work by restoring His creation from the effects of sin.

Thu, 23 Jul 2026 - 54min - 2996 - Matthew 11:16-30: A Yoke of Rest
As Jesus is speaking about John, He begins to describe the generation that has heard them both preach. The unbelieving hearers were not satisfied, no matter what was preached, yet the truth of God’s Word will be vindicated. Judgment, however, awaits those places that refused to believe Jesus’ mighty words and works. The Father reveals Himself not to the wise and understanding, but to little children, that is, those who come to Jesus entirely dependent on Him. Jesus calls all to come to Him in this way, so that sinners would find rest in bearing His yoke.

Jesus’ response uses Old Testament promises to answer, “Yes! I am the Christ!” As John’s disciples return to John with the answer, Jesus tells the crowds the importance of John’s ministry. Jesus promises His disciples that as they confess Him before the world, He will confess them before His Father in heaven. The disciples must know that this will bring division even within their own families, and they must bear this division as carrying a cross while following Jesus. To lose their lives for His sake will be to truly keep their lives eternally. Those who receive the disciples are actually receiving Jesus and the Father who sent Him. This strengthens the disciples as they go out proclaiming the kingdom of God.

Jesus prepares His disciples for the opposition they will face as they go out proclaiming God’s kingdom. However, the Holy Spirit will give them words to speak as they endure to the end. The hostility the disciples face should be unsurprising since their Lord faced the same. This will give the disciples courage to proclaim the Word of God openly. As they rightly fear God, their other fears will be taken away, for this same God is their heavenly Father who loves His people.

Fri, 17 Jul 2026 - 51min - 2992 - Matthew 10:5-15: Preaching Peace to Lost Sheep
Jesus sends His twelve first, not to the Gentiles or Samaritans, but to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. These lost sheep need to hear the message that both John and Jesus have preached: “The kingdom of heaven is at hand!” God’s reign as King brings healing from sickness and rescue from demons among those who hear the Twelve’s message. God’s reign as King will provide for the Twelve as they go, as He provides for their physical needs through the generosity of those who hear and believe. Those who believe the Word will receive peace from God, but those who do not believe are warned that the Day of Judgment is coming as it once came for notoriously wicked places.

Jesus continues to bring God’s kingdom by teaching, preaching, and healing. He does not see the crowds with anger, but with compassion, for He has come as the Good Shepherd for sinners. In that compassion, Jesus tells His disciples to pray that the Lord would send laborers to work in His plentiful harvest. In answer to that prayer, He sends His twelve apostles with His authority to preach and to heal.

Wed, 15 Jul 2026 - 55min - 2990 - Matthew 9:18-34: Death, Disability, and Demons Overcome
A ruler comes to Jesus, asking Him to lay His hand on the ruler’s dead daughter to give her life again. As Jesus goes, He gives cleansing life to another daughter whose issue of blood has made her unclean. As Jesus’ touch brings life to this woman, so His touch brings life to the girl who has died. After leaving the house, two blind men cry out to Jesus for mercy. With faith in Jesus as the Son of David, they receive the gift of sight from the Lord. Soon, people bring a demon-oppressed man to Jesus, and He casts out the demon and makes the man speak once more. While this leads the crowds to astonishment, the Pharisees are convinced that Jesus is working in league with the devil.

Tue, 14 Jul 2026 - 55min - 2989 - Matthew 9:9-17: From the Tax Booth to the Feast
While Matthew is at the tax booth, Jesus goes to him and speaks an authoritative Word: “Follow Me!” That Word accomplishes Jesus’ will of making Matthew a disciple. When the Pharisees question Jesus’ association with such notorious sinners, Jesus calls them to learn that He has come precisely to call those sick with sin to receive His healing. That joyful ministry is not an occasion for fasting, but for feasting. Jesus is the new wine who cannot be shoved into any manmade wisdom.

Mon, 13 Jul 2026 - 55min - 2988 - Matthew 9:1-8: Authority over Sin
Back in Capernaum, some men bring to Jesus their paralytic friend on his bed. Jesus sees their faith and speaks comforting words of forgiveness to the man. When the scribes consider this blasphemy, Jesus sees their thoughts and corrects them. He uses His authoritative word to make the paralytic walk, and in so doing, He shows that His Word also has authority to forgive sins. The crowds rightly glorify God for bringing this authority over sin among them.

Fri, 10 Jul 2026 - 54min - 2987 - Matthew 8:23-34: Authority over Weather and Demons
Jesus has commanded that He will go to the other side of the sea, and so He falls asleep in the boat as the disciples take Him across. The great storm that arises causes the disciples to forget the Lord’s promise, so they cry out to Him in fear. Jesus rebukes their fear before rebuking the winds and the sea. By this action, He clearly shows that He is God. On the other side of the sea, two demon-possessed men confront Jesus. Even though the enemy is powerful, the demons are no match for Jesus as He sends them into a herd of pigs that spells the demons’ doom. The great display of power brings only fear, not faith, to the people of the region.

Thu, 09 Jul 2026 - 53min - 2986 - Matthew 8:14-22: Feverish Following
When Jesus enters Peter’s house in Capernaum, He heals Peter’s mother-in-law, and she begins to serve Him. As Jesus continues His ministry of healing, He fulfills the promise of the Lord from Isaiah 53, bearing our sicknesses. When Jesus commands that He will be going to the other side of the Sea of Galilee, a scribe declares that he will follow Jesus wherever He goes. Jesus warns the man that to follow Him is to journey the way of the cross. When a disciple tarries, the Lord gives instruction concerning the urgency of following Him.

Wed, 08 Jul 2026 - 55min - 2985 - Matthew 8:1-13: Only Say the Word
Having finished His teaching in the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus descends as crowds follow Him. A leper emerges and cries out for cleansing, which Jesus gives in His good will. In touching the leper, Jesus does not become unclean; instead, His cleansing flows to the leper. After Jesus enters Capernaum, a centurion approaches Jesus for healing for his servant. The centurion knows the authority of Jesus’ Word and so does not even ask Jesus to enter his house. Jesus marvels at the centurion’s faith and gives according to that faith.

Tue, 07 Jul 2026 - 53min - 2984 - Matthew 7:24-29: On Christ, the Solid Rock, I Stand
Jesus concludes His Sermon on the Mount by urging those who have heard Him to put His Words into practice. This is what the poor in spirit do as they trust in Jesus to keep His promises. To have such faith is to build upon Jesus as a solid foundation; all other ground is sinking sand. Upon the conclusion of His Sermon, the crowds are amazed at Jesus’ authority. As the Gospel continues, that authoritative Word of Jesus continues to be on display.

False teaching would lead people off the narrow path to life. That’s why Jesus warns His disciples against the deception of false teachers. Although they may look good on the outside, their evil on the inside can be seen in the fruit of what they say. The Lord will not be fooled on the Last Day, however. False teachers do not truly know the Lord now, and they will depart from Him forever.

Fri, 03 Jul 2026 - 53min - 2982 - Matthew 7:7-14: Knock on the Narrow Gate
Jesus reminds His disciples that they pray to their heavenly Father who is a generous Giver. They need not be afraid to ask, seek, or knock with confidence and persistence, because their heavenly Father knows even better than earthly fathers how to give good gifts. As God gives good gifts to His children, so Jesus’ disciples show love to others as they desire to be loved themselves. Though this way is narrow and difficult from suffering, it is the way by which Jesus leads to life.

Although Jesus does authorize His disciples to discern what is good from what is evil, Jesus does not authorize His disciples to bring the judgment of condemnation. That authority belongs to Him alone. Rather, with their eyes made healthy by the judgment of sin in Jesus’ cross, the disciples of Jesus can see clearly to help others see the forgiveness of sins found in Christ alone.

Jesus teaches His disciples that trust in the true God instead of any idol brings freedom from worry. He invites His disciples to consider the simple examples of the way God cares for birds and flowers. If God loves such trivial things, He will surely love His dear children. Thus, the disciples are free to seek God’s kingdom and righteousness first, confident that God will give them all things needed.

Tue, 30 Jun 2026 - 53min - 2979 - Matthew 6:19-24: There’s Only Room in the Heart for One God
Just as Jesus’ disciples do not practice their righteousness for the sake of being seen, so they do not treasure those things that can be seen. Rather, the true treasure of the Christian is a heavenly treasure, the righteousness of Christ that comes by faith. This treasure is indestructible and makes for a healthy eye, so that we can look upon the things of this life with the proper perspective. This happens as we worship only the true God, instead of worshipping mammon or any other idol.

Jesus expects that His disciples will engage in the discipline of fasting. Abstaining from food for a time reminds Christians that we do not live by bread alone, but by every Word that comes from the mouth of God. Like other forms of outward piety, Christians do not fast for the sake of being seen by others. Rather, the discipline of the flesh serves to benefit the Christian in deepening dependence upon God alone.

Fri, 26 Jun 2026 - 55min - 2977 - Matthew 6:5-15: Christian Prayer
Just as Jesus expects His disciples will give to the needy, so He expects that they will pray. He warns against the prayer of the hypocrites, in which an outward show is the goal, and He also warns against the prayer of the Gentiles, in which prayer is heard by an abundance of words. Jesus instead grounds His disciples’ prayer in faith that their heavenly Father loves them, hears them, and already knows what they need. Jesus teaches His disciples how to pray with such confidence, giving them the very petitions that are pleasing to Him.

Such giving is not a matter of publicity, but a matter of showing mercy to the neighbor as God has first shown mercy to us.

Jesus ensures that His disciples know that the neighbor whom they are to love includes their enemy. Their Heavenly Father pours His gifts upon the righteous and the unrighteous, and so His Christians are to show the same sort of perfect love. To love only those who love in return is to practice the sort of righteousness that even the pagans already accomplish. God calls His people to His own holiness. Tue, 23 Jun 2026 - 53min - 2974 - Matthew 5:33-42: Truth and Mercy
Jesus attacks any attempt to keep the Law as a matter of checking all the right boxes. Oaths are not a matter of using the right formulation. Instead, Jesus’ disciples should let their speech be saturated with the truth as they seek to keep the Second and Eighth Commandments. Even as God limited the retaliation of His people, He commends mercy to His people, as Jesus teaches His disciples to show kindness even to those who mean them harm.

Mon, 22 Jun 2026 - 55min - 2973 - Matthew 5:27-32: Marriage Breakers
As Jesus continues to expound upon His Law, He deepens our understanding of the Sixth Commandment. Physical adultery does not only break marriage; the lust of the heart already sins against God’s gift of a spouse. Jesus’ disciples shouldn’t just shrug their shoulders at divorce and make sure to go about it with the right procedures. Jesus’ disciples should keep their goal of upholding and protecting marriage, rather than breaking it apart. Although Jesus would not have His disciples engage in self-mutilation, He would have us take steps necessary to remove the causes of sin in our lives so that we would live according to the clean heart He creates in us.

Rather than allowing anger to fester and grow in our hearts, Jesus teaches His disciples to seek reconciliation quickly.

Thu, 18 Jun 2026 - 52min - 2971 - Matthew 5:17-20: An Exceeding Righteousness
Jesus prepares for a major section of teaching in His Sermon on the Mount by clarifying His relationship to the Scriptures. He has not come to abolish the Law or the Prophets, but to fulfill them. He will accomplish all that is written down to the smallest jot or tittle. Thus, none of Jesus’ disciples are free to relax God’s commandments in teaching or practice. Rather, Jesus calls His disciples to a righteousness that exceeds the righteousness that the Pharisees and scribes have. The righteousness of Jesus’ disciples is greater because it is of a different kind—it is the gift of God to them through faith in Jesus.

His disciples are the light of the world, not meant to be hidden but to be seen by all. Yet, the disciples of Jesus are not to be seen to draw attention to themselves. “The Reign of Heaven Stands Near” is a series on Sharper Iron that studies the Gospel according to St. Matthew. The first evangelist proclaims that God has fulfilled His Old Testament promises by sending Jesus to bring the reign of the heavens among us. As the Son of David, Jesus is the gracious King we need, and as the Son of Abraham, Jesus is the blessing to all the families of the earth.
Sharper Iron, hosted by Rev. Timothy Appel, looks at the text of Holy Scripture both in its broad context and its narrow detail, all for the sake of proclaiming Christ crucified and risen for sinners. Two pastors engage with God's Word to sharpen not only their own faith and knowledge, but the faith and knowledge of all who listen. Pastor Appel serves at Faith Lutheran Church in Godfrey, IL. Tue, 16 Jun 2026 - 56min - 2969 - Matthew 5:3-12: Blessed Are You
Jesus begins His Sermon on the Mount with nine beatitudes. Jesus speaks these statements of God’s blessing and salvation to unlikely groups, such as the poor in spirit, the mourners, and the persecuted Christians. Apart from their own merit or strength, they receive blessings from their heavenly King both now and in the future. By the end of this section, Jesus blesses not only “them,” but “you.” In this way, He calls each one of us to hear His Word and receive His blessing.
Rev. Andy Wright, pastor at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church and School in Topeka, KS, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study Matthew 5:3-12.

Mon, 15 Jun 2026 - 55min - 2968 - Matthew 4:23-5:2: The Gospel of the Kingdom
Even as a transitional text, these few verses reveal a great deal of the character of Jesus’ ministry. His teaching, proclaiming, and healing all bring His reign near as good news for sinners. Such ministry begins to draw crowds to Jesus from far and wide. Although not all the crowds come to saving faith in Christ, they still hear His teaching. As Jesus sits down to teach authoritatively, His disciples come to Him to listen to Him and receive His blessing.

Fri, 12 Jun 2026 - 54min - 2967 - Matthew 4:12-22: The Light Dawns in Galilee
John’s imprisonment foreshadows the suffering that Jesus will endure, but the time for His passion has not yet come. Jesus withdraws from Antipas’ territory and leaves His hometown Nazareth to adopt Capernaum as a home base. In so doing, Jesus fulfills the prophecy of Isaiah concerning the preaching of the Gospel in Galilee of the Gentiles. There, Jesus preaches the same sermon that John had preached: “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” Jesus calls four fishermen to follow him and become His apostles who will later preach that same sermon of repentance and faith to the whole world.
