LARRY LEVAN Dedication tribute mix by DJ SPINNA (NYC) - Part I DJ Spinna Larry Levan dedication mix pt 1 DJ Spinna, one of the most influential DJ’s who really mastered the art of seamlessly combining hip hop and house music sounds has created a delightful dedication mix to the one and only DJ legend, Larry Levan. For those of you who are unfamiliar with Mr. Levan - he was a pioneer in New York’s club scene in the late 80’s early 90’s with a huge hand in the legendary Paradise Garage which has been referred to as the “prototype to the modern club” - a club that was entirely focused on DANCING. Many people in the dance community already understand the role that Larry had on shaping the New York club culture via the legendary Paradise Garage which lasted a little over a decade. I was fortunate enough to experience Larry's magic in the G the year the club came to an end in 1987. You could only get in as a member and luckily one of the older members on my block was able to make it happen for me. I was in my teens and it literally changed my life forever. I caught that bug...It's something that's embedded in your soul for an eternity. I sometimes hear from older members that I should have been around when he was really on fire in the earlier days, but 1987 was good enough for me. The sound system alone was something that I have yet to see duplicated. You could feel the bass in your chest. I remember riding home on the train feeling like I had gone deaf. My ears never rang again like it did that Sunday afternoon. I grew up listening to his music mainly on WBLS via Frankie Crocker and Tony Humphries in the early 80s' and I have memories of going to my local record store in the neighborhood to buy jams like 'Let's Go Dancin'' by Sparque and I got 'My Mind Made Up' by Instant Funk, both included in this session. As a New Yorker and anyone living in New York in the 80's you couldn't really avoid Larry's work. Some of his work even infiltrated the hip hop world via samples with records like 'Heartbeat' by Taana Gardner, '7th Heaven' used in Biggie's 'Friend of Mine' and Central Line's 'Walking Into Sunshine' used in the classic LL Cool J/Marley Marl remix of 'Jingling Baby.' Some call it Boogie, some say Disco, and some Garage but at the end of the day it's straight up good music that you can dance to and enjoy, period! This is part one, more to come shortly. A tribute to 1980's Funk and R&B singer JOYCE SIMS who sadly passed away last month aged 63. An hour-long homage of hand-picked classic jams from one of the finest voices of 1980's funk, R&B and Freestyle scenes. Joyce is most well known for her single Come Into My Life, which reached the top 10 in the US Billboard R&B Chart, and UK Singles Chart in 1987. She went onto release several more tracks in the following years, such as Lifetime Love, Walk Away and Looking For a Love. It was this sojourn to the US that introduced him to what was to become his lifelong passion – soul – be it fashioned in disco, funk, hip-hop, latin, house, jazz or pop. He arrived back in Sydney in the early 80’s and rejected the prevalent European trends of new wave, romanticism and gothic promoting a funk night at “The Watermelon Club” with his long term collaborator Andy Glitre. Opening in Kings Cross in 1982 on a Monday night, the pair soon outgrew the venue, and moved to The Berlin Club at Jamieson Street playing to a Tuesday night crowd of 1,500 weekly. From 1984 – 1988 Stephen fronted pop/funk band Flotsam Jetsam. The band enjoyed considerable success releasing five singles and an EP, touring extensively throughout the country, and supporting major overseas acts A-Ha, Queen and Simply Red. Towards the late 80’s Stephen was back as an influential DJ in both the club scene and the emerging dance party scene appearing at the R.A.T., Fun, Mardi Gras,and Sweatbox parties at the Hordern Pavilion and Royal Hall of Industries culminating with the ‘end of the decade’ R.A.T. party with Grace Jones and 20,000 strong crowd. The late 80’s also saw Stephen move into radio with his national dance show “The Rhythm Method” broadcast on Triple J on Saturday nights successfully until 1993. In the early 90’s he started promoting the hugely successful “All Souled Out” – Wednesday at Rogues attracting performances by Sisters Sledge, Thelma Houston, Diana King and KC (without his Sunshine Band!). It was the club of choice for private parties for visitors such as Prince, Prince Albert of Monaco, Jose Carreras, and Gerard Depardieu. During this time he also wrote a monthly column for Juice magazine, Rhythm Method. We love this summer warm up mix our brother DJ SEB ONE put together as a warm up for SOUL OF SYDNEY PICNIC at SYDNEY FESTIVAL back in 2016. The following phrase, spoken urgently, would set the next three years in motion. “Hey, I’ve got to go rehearse for a dance showcase, cover the booth for the next hour and a half.” Things have come a long way for Seb One since that night of frantic under the booth googling on an iPhone 3GS, “Scratch Live Instruction Manual." Since then he has opened for the prestigious Dancekool Volume annual hiphop festival/competition alongside such notaries as DJ Matt Fernandez and DJ Naiki and has proven himself capable of supplying the backbone for dance battles of all styles in Sydney. A classic recording from Sydney radio archives. The legendary NORMAN JAY on air with STEPHEN FERRIS on THE RHYTHM METHOD in 1989 on JJJ 195.7 FM when he was in town for the legendary FUNK INC party. About the Mix / Saturday nights were mine at Triple J from 1988 to 1993 from 10pm to 2am, primarily club sounds, but of course with my love of Soul/Disco flavouring the selection. I interviewed a few heroes, such as Frankie Knuckles (a very generous, sweet man), Chaka Khan (difficult) and of course this man Norman Jay MBE on his first trip to Australian around 1991.
