Taking a bad fall as a child, in a car accident, or simply having played a contact sport, like football or soccer, can lead to memory issues later in life. Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) that occurred decades earlier can cause lasting damage, and most people don't even realize that they've had one.

- 1414 - 10 Ways Brain SPECT Imaging Changes Mental Health Care
In this week's episode, Dr. Amen & Tana sit down to discuss the importance of brain SPECT Imaging for mental health care. Seeing your brain scan helps you understand that mental health issues is not a "mental" health condition, but rather a brain health issue. Psychiatrists typically diagnose mental health issues like depression, anxiety, ADHD, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) based on symptoms clusters. For example, you tell your doctor you feel depressed or anxious or inattentive, so you get diagnosed with depression or anxiety or ADHD and walk out with a prescription for antidepressants or anti-anxiety pills or stimulant medication. Without looking at the brain with functional brain imaging tools, clinicians will never be able to know the underlying brain patterns of the people they treat. So they can't know the root cause of your symptoms. Since 1989, Amen Clinics has used brain imaging to help thousands of people overcome mental disorders with targeted solutions that are proven to produce higher than average success rates. We use a brain imaging technology called SPECT (single photon emission computed tomography) that evaluates blood flow and activity in the brain.

Mon, 15 Dec 2025 - 28min - 1403 - ADHD & The Female Brain (The Answers!)
In this week's short video, Dr. Daniel Amen and his wife Tana Amen talk about ADHD and how it differs in males and females. They'll also share practical tips that you can implement in your life right now. ADHD is commonly thought of as a disorder of hyperactive, behaviorally troubled boys. Yet, it afflicts many girls who are often overlooked because they tend not to be as hyperactive and have fewer behavior problems.
In fact, although females have ADHD in high numbers, males are diagnosed three to four times more than females. Missing ADHD in females can have devastating lifelong effects on their health, mood, relationships, career, and finances. Females with ADHD suffer more than 7 times the risk for both antisocial and mood disorders, three times the risk for addictive disorders, and twice the risk for anxiety disorders than those who do not have ADHD. Additionally, they have a higher risk for eating disorders, such as bulimia and obesity. But there's good news—you are NOT stuck with the brain you have!

Mon, 10 Nov 2025 - 1h 17min - 1393 - 4 Easy Ways to Reduce Your Stress and Anxiety Right Now
All of us know the feeling when stress is running wild through our body. Everything you think about is influenced by the anxiety and worry. It's horrible, right? You can probably relate to this since about 30% of people who visit their primary care physician are actually there as a result of stress-induced symptoms. Things like headaches, muscle tension, stomach and digestive discomfort, anxiety, and depression are tied to stress. The pain that results from these symptoms can produce a deep sense of futility and hopelessness. In fact, people struggling like this often think the pain is permanent.
But it's simply NOT true! According to Dr. Amen, you might not be able to eliminate the stressors in your life entirely, but you can start feeling better—immediately!
Kill those ANTs! Putting a stop to automatic negative thoughts reduces anxiety and depression symptoms.
Gratitude = A Better Attitude. Practicing gratitude actually changes your brain chemistry! Bringing your attention to the good things in your life has a powerful effect.
Sweat, Don't Fret. Exercise increases both dopamine and serotonin levels in the brain! Exercise daily to experience radical positive effects on your anxiety symptoms.
Eat Smart Carbs. Many of us seek comfort in carbs when we feel stressed or anxious. Eating the right kind of carbs helps stabilize blood sugar for a more balanced mood.

Mon, 27 Oct 2025 - 39min - 1389 - How to Break a Panic Attack in 2 Minutes
Dr. Daniel Amen and actress/model Nikki Leigh demonstrate a technique to break a panic attack in 2 minutes. Panic disorder is a type of anxiety disorder in which a person experiences recurrent panic attacks. A panic attack involves sudden feelings of intense fear and worry combined with overwhelming physical symptoms even though there is no real danger present. Panic attacks themselves are not life-threatening, but they can make you feel like you can't breathe like you're having a heart attack, or like you might die. Panic attacks tend to come on suddenly and without warning. They can hit you anywhere at any time—even in places you would expect to feel safe. For example, a panic attack can wake you from a sound sleep in your own bed, hit you when you're on vacation at the beach, or strike you while you're in church. The distressing feelings can linger long after the initial onset of the panic attack. You may begin to live in fear of having another attack and begin avoiding places or situations where you think it might happen again. This can ruin your quality of life and cause problems at work, at school, and at home.
