Voxology (Formerly the Vox Podcast with Mike Erre) is a collection of voices that question and discuss our culture's most relevant topics in relation to Christ and Christianity. We talk LGBTQ, American and church politics, Christian culture's catastrophic marginalization of the very people Jesus implores us to love and so much more. If you have serious questions about the church’s representation of Jesus, what he has done and the beauty of his work on earth today, join hosts Mike Erre and Tim Stafford and their guests to talk things out and find your way back to the true mission of Jesus.
- 532 - 453 - To Be Human - Part Seven: Not So With You
To Be Human - Part Seven: Not So With You. Misuse of power? Misunderstanding power? Non discerning power? Today, we explore the idea that Christians should not seek worldly power, but instead focus on loving their neighbors and embodying the teachings of Jesus. There are two types of power: power over and power with. This sets the stage for a deeper exploration of power dynamics in future episodes.
This episode, Mike and Tim explore the concept of power and distinguishes between power over and power with: Power Over is the ability to control or influence others, whether through force, expertise, or social systems. Power With, on the other hand, is relational power that works in cooperation and mutuality. Jesus exemplifies power with, as he serves and empowers others instead of exerting power over them. The conversation also highlights the dangers of using power over, as it inhibits God's work in the world and goes against the nature of the kingdom of God.
Further, as we explore the difference between power over and power with, what is the importance of power under (with), which is exemplified by Jesus? What of the temptation to use power over and the need for discernment in using power in a way that aligns with the teachings of Jesus? The conversation touches on topics such as Christian nationalism, the role of the church, and the importance of community and shared power. As always, we encourage and would love discussion as we pursue. Feel free to email in questions to hello@voxpodcast.com, and to engage the conversation on Facebook and Instagram.

To Be Human - Part Six: Power Over vs. Power With. Today, Mike and Tim discuss the concept of gatekeeping and the misuse of power in various contexts, including the church and society. They explore the idea of ruling and having dominion over creation, emphasizing the importance of modeling God's rulership, which is based on love, humility, and invitation. This opens us up to our main topic: power over vs. power with. Mike and Tim highlight the need to hold convictions in a way that promotes curiosity, conversation, and hospitality, rather than using them to exclude or shame others. Further, they discuss the concept of power and how it is used by God, the idea of power over versus power with, and how power with is invitational and cooperative, while power over is hierarchical and coercive. How does this play into the importance of environmental stewardship and how is it a way of bearing the image of God?

Mon, 22 Apr 2024 - 1h 03min - 530 - 451 - How Should We Be Political? - with Dr. Timothy Gombis
First off, we were hit on all sides in this episode. Construction, sick kid interruptions, audio problems... it was bumpy. However, we stuck the landing...
How Should We be Political? Today, Mike and Tim welcome another Tim, Dr. Timothy Gombis, to explore the role of the church in politics and how to navigate political engagement as Christians. The church IS a political entity and the Christian way is political from beginning to end!
However, the focus should be on practicing the politics of the cross, which involves service, love, and advocacy for the weak. It is important to resist being seduced into practicing the politics of this world and instead focus on the politics of the kingdom of God. We also highlight the need to balance mental health with being concerned about justice issues and the importance of taking action at the local level.
Further, we discuss the dangers of getting caught up in national politics and the media's role in fueling anger and division, the idea of loyalty to Jesus and how it should shape our political engagement and the importance of focusing on local issues and taking action in our own communities. We need compassion, empathy, and understanding in our interactions with others, especially those with different political views.

To Be Human - Part Five: It Is Good. Today, Mike and Tim discuss the concept of ruling and what it means to be human. They explore the idea that creation is good, not perfect, and that humans are placed in the world to direct and manage it. They emphasize the importance of enjoying and appreciating creation, as well as the potential for misuse of power and authority. The episode touches on topics such as the purpose of marriage, the value of physical embodiment, and the need to honor God's goodness in our actions.
Further, they explore the themes of enjoyment, creativity, and restoration in the context of ruling and reigning over creation. It emphasizes the idea that God created a world filled with potential and invites humans to participate in the cultivation and enjoyment of that creation. The conversation also touches on the concept of freedom and how it relates to our understanding of what is good, highlighting the importance of finding joy in the simple pleasures of life and appreciating the beauty of nature.
And, hey, it concludes by encouraging listeners to go outside and enjoy something as a spiritual discipline.

To Be Human - Part Four: Woman & Man. Today we analyze Genesis 1 and the poetic refrain that emphasizes the unity and diversity of humanity as images of God. Let's talk about the themes of the Genesis story and its relationship to ancient Near Eastern creation stories, the image of God and the unity in difference between male and female, the implications for gender equality, the absence of hierarchy between male and female, the image of God and procreation, the image of God and gender identity, treating all humans as image bearers, the Church as a community of image bearers, ruling in community, and the thread of congruity throughout the Bible.... Heyo!
First, we discuss an email on the topics of correcting conditions and disabilities, as well as the implications of the new creation for individuals with disabilities. They explore the concept of the image of God and its significance in human ethics. The conversation also delves into the tension between hope and suffering, and the importance of loving and accepting others. To Be Human - Part Three: The Royal Dignity of Seth Erre.Today, we continue the conversation on what it means to be human, by exploring different views on the image of God, including the substantive, relational, and functional views.
The conversation highlights the need for Christians to live out their faith in a way that reflects the kingdom of God and promotes inclusivity and love for all people, including the concept of human image and the different views on personhood. We delve into the implications of the functional view and presents the ontological view as a counterargument.
What is the importance of treating all human beings as image bearers and the inherent value of every individual? What is the revolutionary nature of the image of God in Genesis and its impact on ancient societies? The conversation also addresses the treatment of children with special needs and the reevaluation of definitions and vantage points. Annnnd, we wrap it up with a reflection on the use of power and the threat of radical messages.

Mon, 25 Mar 2024 - 1h 14min - 526 - 447 - To Be Human - Part Two: Statuesque
To Be Human - Part Two: Statuesque. Today, we explore the concept of the image of God in humanity. The "image and likeness" of God were standard statue words used in the ancient Near East, referring to physical representations of deities or kings. How is it that being the image of God is not limited to specific capacities or religious aspects of life, but encompasses the totality of human existence? What is the importance of understanding that humans are meant to be living statues of Yahweh, representing God's presence in the world? What are the implications of the "image of God" for human relationships and the restoration of humanity's image through Jesus?
First, we look at an email about the topics of faith, guidance, and discernment in relation to partying, sex, and drinking. What is the importance of a centered approach rather than a bounded approach to these topics? The goal of Christ-following is to become like Jesus and overcome behaviors that hinder our pursuit of Jesus-likeness. And of course, Tim pushes the need for critical thinking and discernment in engaging with culture.

Mon, 18 Mar 2024 - 1h 05min - 525 - 446 - To Be Human - Part One: In The Beginning
New series alert! To Be Human...Today, we begin a new conversation around what it means to be human. In this episode, Mike and Tim dive into the meaning of the first sentence of Genesis and the significance of the words 'bereshit' and 'reshit.' What is the purpose of Genesis and the creation story? Why is it important to understand the literary devices used in the text?
Further, we explore the conflict between science and faith in interpreting Genesis. We emphasize that Genesis is not meant to answer scientific questions about ‘how' and ‘when' things happened, but rather the ‘what' and ‘why.’ The importance of curiosity and humility in biblical interpretation is highlighted, as well as the use of symbolism and metaphor in Genesis. We also discuss the flexibility of interpretation and the role of liturgy and tradition in faith. It concludes by emphasizing the role of Jesus and the gospel in understanding Genesis.

Mon, 11 Mar 2024 - 1h 07min - 524 - 445 - Chapstick for the Soul - with Suzie P. Lind
Chapstick for the Heart. Today, Mike and Tim are joined by the amazing Suzie P. Lind to discuss various topics related to personal growth, relationships, and parenting. They share personal experiences and insights, highlighting the importance of setting boundaries, being aware of one's limits, and learning from past mistakes. The conversation also delves into the challenges of repairing relationships with adult children and the need for self-reflection and growth as parents. How do we take a less bounded approach and impart wonder and love for Jesus, the power of repair and healing and encourage being available for repair and connection? What does it mean to trust Jesus with our children's faith? How doe we repair and connect with adult children? Or connect over outcome-based apology, naming wounds and seeking repair, teach with wonder and connection, invite kids into wonder and curiosity, dismantle the formulaic approach, teach with wonder and age-appropriate methods, teach scripture with life, not the harm of using the Bible for control but shaping lives towards Christlikeness... How do we parent with selflessness and humility, different forms of authority, and exercising authority like Jesus... Yowza.
Parenting is not sin management. How can we emphasize the importance of restoring full humanness in children?

Mon, 04 Mar 2024 - 1h 09min - 523 - 444 - Strange Religion - with Dr. Nijay Gupta
Today, we have Dr. Nijay Gupta back to talk about his new book, "Strange Religion: How the First Christians Were Weird, Dangerous, and Compelling."In this book, Dr. Gupta discusses and explores the social force of early Christians in the Roman Empire. He highlights the contrast between Roman religion and the beliefs and practices of the early Christians. The early Christians defied Roman hierarchy and power, rejected rituals of appeasement, and emphasized direct access to God. They also practiced gift-giving and generosity, expanding their acts of kindness beyond their own community.
The early Christians challenged the notions of Romanness and monoculturalism, embracing diversity and inclusivity. What are the parallels between Christianity and Roman religion? How does Christianity resemble the Roman religion, including hierarchy and power, appeasement and divine judgment, and elitism and limited access? We talk about the influence of preachers, the role of the church, the professionalization of pastoral ministry, elitism and limited access, building up each other, the teachings and lifestyle of Jesus, authentic relationship with Jesus, dying to everything but Jesus, the daily question of dying, the scandal of pastors falling from grace, and making Christianity weird again...

Growing Kids God's Way? Is that a thing? WARNING, it gets a little spirited. Today, Mike and Tim discuss the theme of differentiating fruit and outcomes, emphasizing the importance of faithfulness over controlling outcomes. The conversation concludes with a question about parenting and the use of the "rod," from the book of Proverbs. Mike and Tim discuss their perspectives on parenting and discipline. They emphasize the importance of building a close relationship with their children and prioritizing connection over strict discipline, challenge the idea of labeling one way of parenting as 'biblical' and highlight the harmful effects of shame in parenting. What is the difference between outcome-focused parenting and fruit-focused parenting? How do we differentiate between fruit and outcomes in order to focus on faithfulness rather than controlling results? How do we create environments that allow for the growth of fruit, but recognize that fruit cannot be produced or controlled?

For the Good of the Field.
Two listener questions. Two in depth responses. Alter calls and platforming younger people before they're ready. Today, Mike and Tim discuss the concept of platforming people too early and the potential dangers it poses. They also explore the role of altar calls in evangelism and the early church's view of patience. The conversation highlights the importance of discernment and the need for a balanced approach to these topics. They also explore the concept of patience as a counter-cultural virtue and its application in the teachings of Jesus. The parable of the wheat and weeds is examined as an example of patient ferment, where the Kingdom of God exists alongside evil in the world. The importance of creating a culture of humanization and embodying the goodness of living under the lordship of Jesus is emphasized. The traditional practice of altar calls is questioned, and a broader understanding of evangelism is proposed. The chapter concludes with a call to be patient, resist factionalism, and love those with whom we disagree.

Mon, 05 Feb 2024 - 1h 19min - 519 - 440 - Gospel & Gombis: Part Five
Gospel & Gombis: Part Five. Okokok. This is a long one. Brace yourselves.
The Holy Spirit. Mike and Tim put Gombis on the spot with questions about the Spirit. What is it? What is it's role? What is Paul's understanding of Jesus as part of the triunity and his teaching on the Holy Spirit? They address misconceptions about Paul's teaching and how evangelicals often misread his views on the Spirit. The conversation concludes with a discussion on the Spirit's work in the church and individualized Spirit talk in Acts. Everyone discusses the interpretation of Ephesians 5:18 and the concept of being filled with the Spirit. They explore the idea that the church, as a community, plays a role in being filled with the Spirit and producing the fruits of the Spirit. They also discuss the understanding of spiritual gifts and how they should be viewed as gifts for the benefit of the church rather than personal abilities. Annnnnd, what about praying to the Holy Spirit and the role of spiritual disciplines in the context of community life?
First, Mike and Tim discuss various issues that came up just this morning. They touch on the lack of trust in clergy and instances of sexual misconduct, the rise of the non-religious population, and the tendency to blame deconstruction for people leaving the church. They also explore the identity crisis in America and the need for patience in the church.

Mon, 29 Jan 2024 - 1h 41min - 518 - 439 - The Spirit of our Politics - with Michael Wear
Today, Mike and Tim are joined by Author and Speaker Michael Wear, to discuss his new book, "The Spirit of Our Politics: Spiritual Formation and the Renovation of Public Life." Michael discusses the intersection of Christianity and politics, emphasizing the need to integrate political life into discipleship. He highlights the importance of understanding the role of faith in politics and the impact of Christianity on public life. Wear also addresses the disappearance of moral knowledge and the need for Christians to offer goodness to politics. He challenges the notion that voting is a God-given duty and encourages Christians to steward their influence in a way that is most loving towards their neighbors. Wear shares insights from his experience working in the White House and emphasizes the need to hold politicians and political systems accountable.
In this conversation, Mike and Tim discuss the influence of politics on religious identity. They explore how partisan forces shape religious divides and how political beliefs often take precedence over religious values. They highlight the dangers of political idolatry and the lack of critical thinking in political discourse. The conversation emphasizes the need for Christians to engage in political issues with a focus on goodness and the teachings of Jesus. Overall, the discussion calls for a reevaluation of the relationship between politics and faith.

Mon, 22 Jan 2024 - 1h 02min - 517 - 438 - Revelation - Part Thirty: To Hell and Back
Revelation - Part Thirty: To Hell and Back. Thirty! Crazy. Today, Mike and Tim first respond to a few emails and discuss the harm and good intentions of religious movements, particularly focusing on purity culture, deconstruction etc. Was there good in those movements as well as bad? Will people just deconstruct the things talked about on this podcast in a few years? They emphasize the importance of curiosity and wonder in inviting others to explore beyond the confines of their beliefs. The conversation also touches on concerns about being labeled as universalists and the role of church in saving people. Overall, they encourage a posture of humility, hospitality, and embodying the better alternative. What is the power of labels, the focus of salvation, the concept of hell, and the church as a community? They challenge the traditional understanding of hell as a place of eternal torment and emphasize the importance of understanding the biblical context. They also discuss the role of the church in embodying faithfulness to Jesus and creating a community of salvation. The Bible is not primarily a story about heaven and hell, but about the reunification of heaven and earth.

Mon, 15 Jan 2024 - 1h 22min - 516 - 437 - Revelation - Part Twenty Nine: All Things Made New
Revelation - Part Twenty Nine: All Things Made New. Today, Mike and Tim discuss the January blues and the concept of new creation and restoration. They explore the idea of the day of the Lord and the destruction and purification that will occur. They also delve into the building of the church and the testing of the work done by church leaders. How do the themes of renewal, purification, and the ultimate restoration of heaven and earth play out? What of the themes of the overlapping space of heaven and earth, the work of light, fire, and water, the day of the Lord, a new heaven and a new earth, the new Jerusalem, the new Eden, the reckoning and the call to holiness, the function of hell, the resurrection of Jesus, the new creation project, and the human element in the Bible?
The concept of new creation and restoration is a recurring theme in the Bible. The day of the Lord involves both destruction and purification. Before the rejoining of heaven and earth, there is work to be done, symbolized by light, fire, and water. The day of the Lord is a recurring motif in the Bible, representing a reckoning for human and spiritual wrongdoing. The ultimate goal of the biblical story is a new heaven and a new earth, a purified and tested creation. The new Jerusalem and the new Eden are images of the restored and perfected creation. The Bible calls believers to live holy lives and build on the foundation of Jesus Christ. The function of hell in the biblical story is a topic that requires further exploration. The resurrection of Jesus is a pivotal event that launches the new creation project. The human element in the Bible is evident in the flaws and struggles of the early church. Understanding the human element in the Bible can lead to a more authentic and nuanced interpretation of its teachings. As always, we encourage and would love discussion as we pursue. Happy New Year! Today, Mike and Tim discuss their holiday experiences and reflect on their therapy journeys. They then delve into the concept of 'New Creation,' starting with the creation of heaven and earth in Genesis. They explore the cosmic temple and the Garden of Eden, the rupture and separation of heaven and earth, and the manifestation of God's presence. They highlight the importance of understanding the biblical narrative and the implications it has for our lives. They explore the concept of heaven and earth in the Old Testament, highlighting instances of overlapping spaces. It discusses Jacob's dream and Moses and the burning bush as examples of heaven and earth intersecting. The tabernacle and temple are presented as spaces where heaven and earth overlap, with Jesus ultimately becoming the ultimate "heaven and earth space." The conversation also touches on Jesus' authority and the future restoration of all things. What is the church's role as the heaven and earth space and the hope of restoration and new creation?

Mon, 01 Jan 2024 - 1h 17min - 514 - 435 - Revelation - Part Twenty Seven: Smoke on the Water
Revelation - Part Twenty Seven: Smoke on the Water. Today, Mike and Tim discuss the concept of the lake of fire and its symbolism in the book of Revelation. Merry Christmas!!! What are the origins of this imagery in the Old Testament, particularly in the stories of Sodom and Gomorrah? Does the lake of fire represent destruction rather than eternal conscious torment? What is Hell??? Does the text really advocate for an eternity of torment and separation for "unbelievers?"
- The lake of fire in Revelation represents destruction rather than eternal conscious torment.
- The imagery of burning sulfur and smoke rising is borrowed from the Old Testament, particularly the stories of Sodom and Gomorrah.
- Being left outside the city symbolizes exclusion from the New Jerusalem and the consequences of practicing vices associated with empire.
- Understanding the symbolic nature of these images is crucial for interpreting the book of Revelation. Revelation challenges us to ask hard questions and reckon with our complicity with empire.
- The book of Revelation is not about predicting the end times, but rather about reflecting on our own actions and the actions of the church.
- The themes of injustice, making all things new, and leveling empires are consistent throughout the Bible.
- The Bible is intentionally provocative and invites us to question and wrestle with its teachings.
- Permission is granted to ask hard questions and wrestle with our faith and beliefs.
Yowza.

Mon, 25 Dec 2023 - 57min - 513 - 434 - Practicing the Way - with John Mark Comer
Practicing the Way. Today, Mike and Tim are joined by old friend John Mark Comer, to discuss his new book and non profit, 'Practicing the Way.' Why “apprentice” instead of disciple? Are we are all being formed by someone or something? Is spiritual formation not so much a Christian thing or even a religious thing, but a human thing? How is community integral to spiritual formation? How is the practice of community far more than church attendance? How does suffering play into all of this?

Don'y skip the banter! Some important news in the front section!
Revelation - Part Twenty Six: The Lake of Fire. We're coming to the end of this ridiculously long series on the book of Revelation. Today, it's the two final battles, judgments and the Lake of fire... What do the final battles represent? Is this when God comes back swingin? Is it the bloody finale so many have dreamt of and still advocate for from the pulpit? Why two? When does this happen? What is the Lake of Fire? Is it Hell? Will people burn there forever? What OT references are needed to understand?
Mike and Tim also spend some time discussing the next 'Nonference' this coming summer as well as a few listener emails.

Mon, 11 Dec 2023 - 1h 15min - 511 - 432 - The God Who Hides
The God Who Hides. What happens when I don’t feel presence? Why are desert times necessary in my relationship with God – I don’t need them in my other relationships... Why does God seem absent when I need him most? Why does he seem distant? Why does God allow us to feel his absence when we know he is not absent? When you are praying, it is bouncing off the ceiling; read the bible, it is dust… The bible calls this the “hiddenness of God”...
12 different times in OT – he hid his face from his people (9 times in the Psalms) – there is the idea of a God you can’t hide in one sense, but in another sense he at times veils himself from his people:
Why, LORD, do you stand far off? Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble? (Ps. 10:1) How long, LORD? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me? (Ps. 13:1) Awake, Lord! Why do you sleep? Rouse yourself! Do not reject us forever. Why do you hide your face and forget our misery and oppression? Mon, 04 Dec 2023 - 1h 17min - 510 - 431 - The Only Way Out is Through
The Only Way Out is Through. Mike and Tim spend some time unpacking a couple listener emails that deal with hopelessness and worship. This prompts Mike to revisit Walter Bruggeman’s typology:
a. Psalms can be roughly grouped this way, and the flow of human life characteristically is located either in the actual experience of one of these settings, or is in the movement from one to another.
b. This is not a formula, or rigid divide of categories; some Psalms do not seem to fit and some seem to have all 3 points.
- Psalms of orientation (guaranteed creation) -- life is good (Psalm 145) - Psalms of disorientation (songs of disarray) – life hurts (Psalm 13) - Psalms of reorientation (songs of surprising new life) – there is hope in the darkness (Psalm 30) As always, we encourage and would love discussion as we pursue. Mon, 20 Nov 2023 - 1h 26min - 508 - 429 - Revelation - Part Twenty Five: Babylon, Continued
Revelation Part Twenty Five: Babylon, Continued. Rome becomes Babylon. In this vision, john as blended together words and images from every single OT passage about the downfall of ancient Babylon, Tyre, and Edom. (Isa. 13, 23, 34, 47; Jer. 50-51; Eze. 26-27). John’s showing how Rome is simply the newest version of the OT archetype of humanity in rebellion against God. They come together and form nations that exalt their own economic and military security into a false God. This isn’t something limited to the past or the future. It’a a portrait of the human condition throughout history. And "Babylons" will come and go leading up the day when Jesus returns to replace Babylon with his kingdom. But how will Jesus’ kingdom come? And it's amazing!! Every single Old Testament passage from the prophets about the fall of Babylon gets quoted in those chapters of Revelation about the fall of Babylon. The questions Mike references: - Am I safe here? - Am I confident here? - Do I belong here? - Am I worth loving? - Am I worth your attention? - Am I wanted here? Mon, 23 Oct 2023 - 1h 09min - 503 - Prayers of the People
You hear us calling, Abba Father.
Lord have mercy. Christ have mercy.
Father, we lift up all those who have lost family and loved ones, whose lives have been upended and destroyed. We grieve and lament with them. God, might you meet them in their pain, meet them in their need. God, would you show us how to intervene, how to love in a time of hate, how to be peace makers in a time of war and death. Father, we pray for those who have been taken from their families, that they would be released. That you would meet them in their despair and bring hope and safety and restoration.
Lord have mercy. Christ have mercy.
Father, we ask that you would soften the hearts of our leaders and clear their eyes, that they might advocate for humanities flourishing, not it’s destruction. Lord, give them courage and discernment to make hard decisions in the face of adversity and greed that restore humanity to those they may see as the other.
Lord have mercy. Christ have mercy.
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.
You hear us calling, Abba Father.
Lord have mercy. Christ have mercy.

Mon, 09 Oct 2023 - 59min - 500 - 423 - Revelation - Part Twenty: Captured by Rapture
Revelation - Part Twenty: Captured by Rapture. One aspect of the content of Revelation that needs to be stressed once again is that, there is no rapture in the book of Revelation (It is supposedly narrated at 4:1, the introduction to the book’s central vision). The book of Revelation clearly teaches, and calls on its readers to pray for, the return of Christ. It is not the second coming of Christ that is absent from Revelation but the alleged rapture of the Church by Christ in a kind of secret prequel to the real second coming. How has it become so convoluted? Where did these ideas like Left Behind come from? How did they get so off course? Pre/Post Tribulation? The Millennium?? First, Mike and Tim read a listener email asking for clarification. When reading the imprecatory Psalms, is the desire to see our enemies' destruction a godly attitude? Should we be 'joining' in with the martyrs and call for God's judgment to rain down on those who do evil?

Mon, 02 Oct 2023 - 1h 12min - 499 - 422 - Revelation - Part Nineteen: Thunderstruck
Revelation - Part Nineteen: Thunderstruck. Seals & Trumpets & Bowls, Oh My! These will serve like nesting dolls as they harken back and comment on current events. Last episode we saw the OT Days of the Lord references. Now we see what John was commenting on in his own time.
God’s warning judgments through the seals and trumpets did not generate repentance among the nations, just like the exodus plagues only hardened Pharaoh's heart. But the lamb, he conquered his enemies by loving them, dying for them and now the message of the Lamb's scroll reveals the mission of his army, the church. God’s kingdom will be revealed when the nations see the church imitating the loving sacrifice of the lamb. Not killing their enemies, but dying for them. It is God’s mercy shown through Jesus’ followers that will bring the nations to repentance. and this surprising claim is the message of the open scroll that John has placed at the exact center of the entire book.
God’s love gives rise to his judgement; God’s judgment is not the problem, but the solution to a problem. Adam and eve now sit under the serpent’s authority, tearing heaven and earth and unleashing the accuser’s destructive power on God’s good world. So much!!!

What was it in the OT? How did it connect to Passover? How did Jesus and Peter and Paul reference it? And HOW DOES REVELATION USE IT AND SPEAK OF IT'S COMING??? Mon, 04 Sep 2023 - 1h 05min - 495 - 418 - Revelation - Part Fifteen: The Throne at the Center of the Universe
Revelation - Part Fifteen: The Throne at the Center of the Universe.Epic title. Back to Revelation and a look into the Emperor Domitian, who reigned from 81-96. When Domitian (81-96 AD) became emperor there was significant change in the demand for deification. Domitian was obsessed with his own (and his brother Titus' and father Vespasian's) deity. Augustus once explicitly forbade his fellow citizens to address him with the title “Lord.” He did not want to be master of slaves, but first citizen of the empire. But Domitian ignored his forefather and followed in the ways of Nero….He did not wish to be a citizen among his fellow citizens, but a superhuman being in charge of the destiny of humanity. Coins of the era call Domitian the father of the gods... Domitian insisted on being called "Lord and God" whenever he was mentioned or addressed.
How does John address this? What are we to take away?
First, Tim shares some troubled times with how our language and words can incite violence against the LGBTQ community and how everyone, regardless of your opinion, needs to choose words more wisely. Laura Ann Carleton was murdered in Lake Arrowhead California for displaying a pride flag outside her shop. People can become militarized and violent by language they hear from the pulpit, news etc. Words carry power.
Also, Mike and Tim discuss an email about therapy. Should you seek a Christian therapist or does it matter?

God created us fully human – not to be animals, not be angels. An animal – physical body, but no spiritual life. An angel – spiritual life, but no physical body. God didn’t not create us angels, nor did he create us animals… Human beings are unique in creation – fully physical and fully spiritual…two distinct realms brought together in humans. So what does that mean for sex?
Theological Considerations:
- Who am I?
- Beloved by God in brokenness/I am a guest at Jesus’ table Log and Speck - I am deeply broken, too
- I am part of a community that is called to offer hospitality to the outcasts and marginalized - FORSAKING ALL OLD CREATION DYNAMICS I am part of a community has done real harm to LGBTQ+ people - they are wounded deeply and set up in the worst possible state to figure this out (rejected by family and church) I am part of a community that regularly fails to to include single, divorced, and gay people. I am part of a community that is focused on sexuality disproportionately relative to it’s emphasis in the scriptures I am part of a community that has lost any authority to instruct others on sexual matters

Three Men & a Barbie. CONTENT WARNING: There is talk of rape culture and suicide. ANNND, SPOLIERS FOR BARBIE!!Today, Mike and Tim welcome the other Tim (Freakin Gombis) to discuss the new film 'Barbie,' by revisiting the conversation "God is Not in Control" (episode 239). What is the controversy about? Is the film too feminist or not feminist enough? What are folks like Ben Shapiro so triggered by? How does our need for God to be 'in control,' shape the narrative of 'control' in this time? How do we manifest 'control' in God's name? How does Oppenheimer fit in? Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds... We also read a listener email dealing with suicide. What is the correct posture and response when we were mostly raised to understand suicide as the 'unforgivable sin?' Revelation Part Thirteen: Poverty & Riches. Some sound issues today as Mike's mic decided to defect... “To the angel of the church in Smyrna write..."This episode we continue our decent into Revelation. Laodicea was an affluent city, located strategically at the intersection of three major trade routes. The city quickly became a banking and trading center, known especially for its woolen carpets and clothing. Also in Laodicea was one of the ancient world’s most prominent medical schools, especially famous for its eye and ear treatments.
Scholars have found cultural allusions in this message not only to Laodicea’s wealth but also to the local production of eye salve, the use of black wool, and especially the city’s lack of a good water supply. How does that fit metaphorically? How does Las Vegas fit in? What does the "lukewarm, I'll spit you out" reference have to do with it? There are so many cultural references... where do we fit in? John recognized that the acceptance of Rome’s mythology was an act of giving worship to evil masquerading as divine authority.

Mon, 24 Jul 2023 - 57min - 489 - 412 - Revelation Part Twelve: America the Beautiful?
America the Beautiful? Today, Mike and Tim fight off a Seth and Mazzy interruption to discuss how the model of ‘Christian Nationalism’ is nothing new. Rome built a civic religion that John rebuked... What exactly does a civic religion look like in this case? How has America followed Rome? What parts of civic life have we ordained? Solemn devotion and allegiance? Blessing of the State? What lens does John offer us to examine? Is it unpatriotic to critique America? How do we as Christians exercise a healthy patriotism while advocating for the Kingdom of God? Has Christianity, as the dominant American religion, been co opted in service to the sacralization of power? How do we take the narrative back?!?!? How do we participate, even with pride, and resist the baptizing of American ritual? How did self preservation become a Christian trait when we follow a sacrificial God?

What was the deal with the ‘other’ gods? Balaam? Mouth sword?? Hidden manna??? Who was Jezebel and how did she play into this? How did we mess up Jesus already having blood on His robes? The lamb who has won the battle by being martyred… How did we turn this into a book of war and conquering?
Mike and Tim also recap the 4th of July as well as what therapy looks like for each of them, currently

KB talks about his upbringing and his music. What prompted him to right this book? How does Frederick Douglass fit in? What set KB on his Journey? What role does hip hop play in his early story and what does it play now? What makes Jesus 'dangerous?' What role does art play in delivering the Gospel amongst other messages? Who are the competing gods? How does Augustus, "the illustrious one,” factor in? Roma? How does the language of the time, the myths and exaltations, factor into the writing? Have we lost the plot on subverting the Empire? Are we the Empire?!? As with everything, what is to be extrapolated? What from this chapter is for us? What else do we discern? Also, Ted Lasso! Okokok. Sheila and Rebecca walk everyone through the data they've collected regarding the Church's historical messages to women regarding sexuality, self worth and their roles with men. Purity culture isn’t as explicit today but did it work? How did the church lie about this? Where was consent? How did/does purity culture hurt men? What are the biological differences between men and women? Why threats and bribes to encourage abstinence? What is internalized misogyny? How has evangelical teachings about sex limited a woman’s ability to stand up for herself? How have they caused women to marry abusers???

Dr. Lynch is an Associate Professor of Old Testament at Regent College. He sits down and talks the VOXers through how to engage in healthy criticism when approaching ancient texts filled with violence and fury. How have we messed this up? For example, what message from Genesis do the author's want us to walk away with? How do these stories operate? How are these stories told and how are they to be received? Mon, 10 Apr 2023 - 58min - 474 - 397 - God & Guns: Lament For Another School Shooting
There was another school shooting in Tennessee last week. Evelyn Dieckhaus, 9; Mike Hill, 61; William Kinney, 9; Katherine Koonce, 60; Cynthia Peak, 61; and Hallie Scruggs, 9. Mike walks us through the event itself, scripture being bastardized in response and what the Bible actually says about violence. Lord, we grieve so heavily, again, over this loss of precious and innocent life. We pray that their communities would come alongside them, love and sit with them. We pray that we do not grow calloused and accepting of this continuing and escalating violence. Father, we ask that you would soften the hearts and open the eyes of your people. That they would see this violence for what it is. That they would choose life and the edification of humanity over rights and tools of destruction Father, we pray that you would give courage and integrity to those we have chosen to lead. Give them discernment and clarity, wisdom and empathy. Father, allow them to see these tragedies for what they are and to act accordingly. Father, grant us all the courage to see your kingdom here and now, to advocate for the upside down nature of you vision and to love our neighbors, all of them. May they know us by our love.

First, Dr. Gupta talks about his own journey and study. If women can’t be trusted with teaching or leading at church, why should they be trusted teaching other women or children? Did the first century understand terms like patriarchy? How does Paul speak about his ministry associates, Phoebe, Prisca, and Junia? Why Mary as the caretaker of the Messiah? Mon, 27 Mar 2023 - 1h 07min - 472 - The Wanderer - Songs of Resistance: Wandering From the Fold
Songs of Resistance: Wandering From the Fold. AKA, Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing. Welcome to another mini series of The Wanderer, this time focused on trying to understand and define worship. Each episode will look at the history of a particular Hymn and its origin story, how it may have roots in Justice and what it may encourage us to participate in today. Further, every episode will end with a recorded version of the song by Tim, to listen to after walking through the song's history.
This week, a well known oft sung Hymn and one of Tim's favorites: "Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing." What was Robert Robinson's (Bob) journey? While this isn't a justice oriented song as the others have been, what can we glean? How does scripture in form the lyrics? What's an Ebenezer?? How did his own song come back to minister to himself?
Tim covers some of the history, but not all. Bob had a long journey that was fraught with turmoil. He had a long ministry that many loved but ostracized him at times as well. He was married and had 12(!) kids.
This is the long road.
Some points of reference:
"Was He Too Prone to Wander?" by Bruce Hindmarsh
Tim's rendition, "Wandering From the Fold," can be heard on SPOTIFY, APPLE MUSIC or any other streaming platform.

Reorientation to the Center. This episode, Mike and Tim read an email asking about how to approach 'Church discipline.' Mike takes us on a journey through the 'centered' approach and how 'Church discipline' should look more like a reorientation to the center. Tim asks questions about the church model and how it is built to set up Pastors for failure. How can we better change the model? How can the chasm or wall built between the public and private self be dismantled so that Pastors can share vulnerability and struggle more openly? How does the performative nature of Church feed this? How does capitalism?? About That Article... This week, Mike and Tim invite friends Pastor Suzie Lind and Author Katie Haseltine to share their perspective, wisdom and experience as women in the Church, in light of the article published by the Gospel Coalition. How has a woman's sexuality been framed? How was a woman's relation to a man set up? What trauma does this all bring into a relationship? How does it continue in the marriage? What about for men? How has this imbalanced dichotomy effected men's understanding of their own sexuality? How does it effect the way men, the Church and society view and treat women? What does the Bible say? First, Mike takes us through a review of the first six chapters of the book, "Beautiful Union," that this article was taken from. What does it get wrong theologically?

Mon, 20 Feb 2023 - 1h 07min - 466 - 390 - Revelation - Part Three: Apocalypse
Revelation - Part Three: Apocalypse. This episode, Mike and Tim begin a conversation on 'genre,' and how the original audience understood and entered into the 'apocalyptic literature' of Revelation. How does the first sentence set up the book? What are we to understand from the time period? How does time itself inform how we approach Revelation? How is the Bible like a Barnes & Noble or any bookstore? How have we done a disservice to the text with a linear approach?
First, Mike and Tim discuss an email asking about the "He Gets Us" ad campaign that will feature during the Super Bowl. Is this how "evangelism" should look? Would Jesus use this approach? Is more eyes on Jesus a good or bad thing, especially in a commercial setting? And Tim shares some Tim's Troubled Times over extreme conservatives who are attacking schools and why did Trump execute three times as many people during his Presidency that the US had in the last 60 years?
Characteristics of Apocalyptic Literature:
1. Pseudonymous
2. Narrative Form
3. Filled with Symbolism
4. Employs esoteric language interpreted through a heavenly intermediary
5. Characterized by Dualism
6. Treats the final events as imminent.
7. Expresses a pessimistic view of the present time
8. Deterministic Future

Mon, 13 Feb 2023 - 1h 19min - 465 - The Wanderer - Songs of Resistance: Dangers, Toils & Snares
Songs of Resistance: Dangers, Toils & Snares. AKA, Amazing Grace.
This week, it is what is most likely the most famous and well known song of all time: "Amazing Grace." What is the history of this song? How has it lasted so long? Why is it so popular?
Tim covers some of the history, but not all. There was Newton being exiled himself, his father rescuing him. The relationship between himself and William Cowper, William Wilberforce... William Walker (so many Williams...). The Second Great Awakening, Dwight Moody... There is so much to cover. But the main piece is, what is Grace? How does it inform our lives? How does justice and resistance play in?
This is the long road.
Some points of reference:

"Why Obama's Singing of 'Amazing Grace' is so Powerful," by Sarah L. Kaufman
Tim's rendition, "Dangers, Toils & Snares," can be heard on SPOTIFY, APPLE MUSIC or any other streaming platform.

Thu, 09 Feb 2023 - 31min - 464 - 389 - Tyre Nichols and Police Reform - with Nicholas Sensley
Tyre Nichols and Police Reform. Today, Mike and Tim welcome a new friend, retired Chief Nicholas Sensley, who heads up The Institute for American Policing Reform (IAPR). Nick talks to Mike and Time about his upbringing and experiences with police as a young African American boy. Why did he want to become a police officer? How did his time in the military speak into it? Despite the fact that the five officers who beat Tyre Nichols to death, was this a racially motivated crime? How do we begin to change this narrative in America? What does the Institute for American Policing Reform do? How can we help?
Mike and Tim begin with an email critique of their condescending tone towards dispensationalism from the previous episode. And, Seth!

Revelation Part Two: Left Behind. Today, Mike takes us on a journey through a few hot button, five cent words: Dispensationalism! Tribulation! Rapture! The Millennium! How have we gotten to where we are with the prophetic, futurist view we have of Revelation? What do all these terms mean? How did they become all encompassing with our understanding of the book? How do we detach from all of that to see what is really being said?
Mike and Tim spend the first part of the episode discussing a listener email that prompts a conversation about why bad things happen to faithful people. Does God really bring good from all things? Does God allow or prompt evil so that good may prevail? What are we to do with sickness and tragedy?

Revelation - Part One: An Introduction. Welcome to the first podcast video episode. Today, we're starting a new series digging into one of the most misunderstood and weaponized books of the Bible. To start, we're looking at the different ways throughout history that Revelation has been approached and therefore applied. Mike offers a library of texts that he's used to study. Mon, 23 Jan 2023 - 1h 02min - 461 - 386 - Gospel and Gombis: Part One
Gospel and Gombis. Starting a new series of conversations with Dr. Timothy Freakin Gombis that will feature once a month or so. This is the “Gospel” we received growing up: I am a sinner. God’d wrath is upon me and that wrath is a judgment that occurs after I die. If I have not accepted Christ then I am damned to Hell where I am tortured for an eternity. However, if that process is interrupted and someone shares the Gospel with me and I pray a prayer that invites Jesus into my heart, then won that day of judgment I am welcomed into Heaven…What is the invitation to Jesus? How has the way we have individualized the Gospel effected its message? What did the phrase ‘the Kingdom of God’ cultivate in people and their communities in Jesus’s time? What was the invitation then? What is the Kingdom invitation now? What have we added to it to confuse or distort the invitation?

What do they say about us? What do they say to the world? What better questions could we ask? What better ways could we respond to controversy and abuse?
First, everyone sits down with two listener questions about how to leave a Church well, in a New Creation way and how does one, as a Youth Pastor, change the event driven model?

Mon, 02 Jan 2023 - 1h 12min - 458 - 383 - Taking Christ out of Christmas - with Pastor Bethany Nass Cseh
Taking Christ out of Christmas. It's Christmas time here at Voxology. Today, we're joined by our good friend and Pastor, Bethany Nass Cseh, to talk about the day we set aside to celebrate the birth of Jesus. How did Christmas become the celebration it is today? What were the circumstances around the Christ's actual birth? What beef do we all have with Christmas traditions? What would Jesus want from a celebration of His birth?
We spend a lot of time talking about Mary. The scandal of her pregnancy. Her Magnificat in Luke. The role of a Mother to a savior ad His need for her. Some of the beauty that is lost in the blood and flesh of the incarnation.
First, we discuss a Tweet proclaiming that the reason men don't attend Church is because it's too effeminate :/

Women as Elders. After establishing women in teaching and leading roles, Mike and Tim turn to a few listener questions that deal with whether or not women can serve as Elders. Is the term Elder used in the Bible? If so, how? What are the qualifications expressed? Are they gendered? What examples do we have of women leading and what do we know of their roles? We do we do so many mental gymnastics to keep men in charge?
First, the Erre boys discuss the year in review and then Tim brings in a few Strange Stories about a possible Vampire buried beneath the Notre Dame Cathedral and a new study that determines how American Evangelicals picture the face of God.

Here, in this first episode, Tim briefly speaks to the genesis of this series and his struggles with modern worship and how they led to his no longer leading (or singing, or participating, or not cringing). What is worship? What does God ask of us in this? How to we enter into counter programming to rewire the way we worship and operate on a daily basis.

Women, Theology & Leadership. Meet one of our new favorite guests, Dr. Lynn Cohick. Dr. Cohick joins us to dive deeper into the scripture commonly used to advocate for women's non leadership roles in the Church. Dr. Cohick walks us through the broader context around Paul's letters and Genesis, specific women and the roles they played in early Church history and how Paul broke social constructs to advocate for Kingdom Dynamics. Mon, 12 Dec 2022 - 1h 10min - 454 - 380 - How White Evangelicals Think - with Dr. Dave Verhaagen
How White Evangelicals Think: The Psychology of Conservative White Christians. This episode, Mike and Tim sit down with Dr. Dave Verhaagen to discuss his new book about how white Evangelicals think. We hear how folks in this country (and probably without as well) look at how many white Christians, particularly evangelicals, continually espouse beliefs and opinions that are seemingly antithetical to the Christian faith (holding racist attitudes / supporting conspiracy theories / aligning with nationalistic and authoritarian movements / becoming hostile toward the different and marginalized). Dave, a nationally board-certified psychologist and author, "tackles the challenge of explaining the psychology behind what has become the unique mind of the modern white Christian. Each chapter explores one or more robust psychological principles that help make sense of why white Christians think like they do" So, how do we define evangelical? How can we all view the world so differently? Where does all the fear come from? And the narcissism?!?

Mon, 05 Dec 2022 - 1h 05min - 453 - 379 - What's Up, 1 Timothy 2?!?
What's Up, 1 Timothy 2?!? All roads in the conversation for Biblical Masculinity and Biblical Femininity lead here: 1 Timothy 2, the scripture most used to keep women out of leadership roles. Today, Mike takes us on a deep dive to show how this is NOT what Paul was advocating for. What is the full context of Paul's letter? Who is he talking to? What is he addressing? We have seen that Paul had women in leadership roles throughout his ministry, so what is he saying here? What is Gnosticism? How does the full context of Genesis, the gospel and everything in-between inform Paul's writings? This verse has been used for decades to sublimate women. While you can do all things with a verse taken out of context, maybe don't :)

Asking Better Questions of the Bible - with Marty Solomon and Tyler Chernesky
Today we sit down with an old friend of the pod, Tyler Chernesky and a new friend: Author, teacher and host of the BEMA podcast, Marty Solomon. Marty has a new book coming out titled, “Asking Better Questions of the Bible: A Guide for the Wounded, Wary, and Longing for More.” Marty tells us his story, what prompted a deeper, humble pursuit of what the scriptures offer. How do we cultivate curiosity? How can we be more courageous in asking questions? Is holding a ‘high view of scripture’ knowing it can handle your doubts and pursuits? How has Marty’s Jewish heritage informed his studies? It’s a really fun, honest conversation that encourages a heart and mind that can ask better questions and hold mystery.

Mon, 21 Nov 2022 - 1h 01min - 451 - 377 - Woman Up!
Woman Up! Biblical masculinity does not mean devaluing women. Mike and Tim begin a conversation that will (next week) lead into 1 Timothy. What does the Bible actually say about women? Where does the complimentarian ideology come from? How did Jesus upend customs? How did Paul?
First, Mike and Tim interact with a few listener emails... If not the biblical masculinity standards, then what? Or, is the idea of standards in general missing the mark? Do they all lead to a performance of gender? What about the opposite message, to be nice and kind and avoid conflict and accept abuse…? How do we process and use anger? What does righteous anger look like when trying to emulate Jesus? How did Jesus express or process anger? What were the circumstances?

Mon, 14 Nov 2022 - 1h 12min - 450 - 376 - Man Down!
Man Down! Today, Mike and Tim do some follow up work on the biblical masculinity conversation. So many listeners emailed in with follow up questions and the hosts sit down to talk through a few. How do the Sons of Thunder fit into the masculinity conversation? Was Jesus counter to the patriarchal culture? And if so, how? How does Sutton Turner's divulgence of Mark Driscoll's violent behavior, the attack on Paul Pelosi and the Jerry Falwell Jr. documentary play into all of this?
One of the questions asked about Ephesians 5 and how Paul's command for wives to submit to their husbands worked to undo the 'curses' from Genesis. Mike takes us on a deep dive into the Greek, the culture of the time and the Church in Ephesus. What was the cultural dynamic and hierarchy? How did Paul's teaching usurp that? How do complementation folks misuse this scripture and what are they missing??
This resurgence of 'biblical masculinity' has become a large conversation in the evangelical arena.

There has been a resurgence of Christian rhetoric around 'Biblical Masculinity,' with conferences like Man Up! and books that speak to the 'Masculinity of Jesus,' railing against the effeminate, egalitarian, 'soft' Jesus. Today, we take walk through Genesis 1 to see what the Bible actually says about gender and the the imposed hierarchy of male and female. Why do Christians want to uphold the macho man, head of the house aspect of masculinity so much? How does the creation story unfold? Were women created solely as servants and the 'lesser' sex? How do the words during the human creation actually translate? What was our intended purpose and how did our 'curses' after the garden speak to that? How did everything get so twisted? There's a lot to unpack.

Mon, 24 Oct 2022 - 1h 25min - 447 - 373 - Revolutions & Revolutionaries - w/ Suzie Lind and Tim Gombis
Revolutions & Revolutionaries. Today we have an all-star episode. First, Pastor Suzie Lind joins us to discuss what is happening in Iran. Suzie, who was born in Iran and still has family there, tells her story and offers some insight into the protests, violence and struggles the women of that country are in. What is the history there that brought them to this moment? What are the women fighting for? What warning signs can we see in our own country of a similar trajectory? How can we help?
Then we bring in Dr. Timothy Gombis to discuss ideologies and why it has become so difficult navigate these current waters. What does it look like to love your neighbors with whom you vehemently disagree? What did Jesus do? How did Paul navigate? How are we to use their examples today? How do we enter into difficult conversations?
These are two of our most favorite voices to interact with!

Mon, 17 Oct 2022 - 1h 30min - 446 - 372 - A Captive Mind - with Chris Nye
A Captive Mind. Today, Mike and Tim chat with new friend Chris Nye about his new book, "A Captive Mind: Christianity, Ideologies, and Staying Sane in a World Gone Mad." Chris is a former pastor and current author who lives in Portland, Oregon. We have a great discussion about ideologies and how we become subject to them. How does Christianity relate to this captivity? What do we do when folks let go of 'faith' for rhetoric? What role does patience and humility play in our relationship to the world, but also to a Church that has become captive to ideologies of their own?? Is Christianity an idea or an event and what is the difference? How does the Gospel of Jesus change this conversation? It's a really important conversation for us, today.
First, Mike discusses a letter and book that was sent to him on how to vote and Tim brings up the Herschel Walker fiasco as well as folks running for office unabashedly claiming the 'Christian Nationalist' title. How has holding these ideologies changed the way the conservative agenda is sought? How do we enter into conversation with folks who cling to their rhetoric despite its hollowness?
You can interact with, and find Chris's book: HERE

Mon, 10 Oct 2022 - 1h 04min - 445 - 371 - Having the Mind of Christ - with Ben Sternke and Matt Tebbe
Having the Mind of Christ. Today, Mike and Tim sit down with Pastors, podcasters and leadership trainers Ben Sternke and Matt Tebbe, to discuss their new book "Having the Mind of Christ: Eight Axioms to Cultivate a Robust Faith." The group talks about their Gravity Leadership program, both the podcast and their leadership training, as well as the church they founded, The Table, in Indiana. What lead them to plant the church? What did they see in a previous church experience and how did they change those habits? What does it look like to 'have the mind of Christ?'
The book, through 8 'axioms' that offer a new set of lenses to see through, looks at common pitfalls within our well practiced discipleship efforts, with a focus on "practicesrather than doing the deeper work of learning a newparadigm."Sternke and Tebbe advocate for a new way of seeing ourselves, the World and God through each of these practices.
Mike and Tim also spend time discussing an email sent in from a Pastor and listener of the pod who is struggling with wether or not to leave the pastorate. Where is the line between cruciformity and martyrdom? When is it time to leave? What is irreparable and what is worth fighting for? How can Pastors lead when congregates offer only ultimatums?

Mon, 03 Oct 2022 - 1h 10min - 444 - 370 - Insulted - Part Three: Friend of Sinners
Insulted - Part Three: Friend of Sinners. This episode we are venturing back into understanding Jesus through the insults that were hurled at him. Today, it's the claim that he was a 'glutton, a drunkard and a friend of sinners.' As Jesus subverted what was expected of Him, He also provoked conversations about who was welcome and why. What was the cultural context of this? What did sinner mean? Who was calling Jesus this and what was the reason for it? What is the history that leads up to Jesus and what dis His actions say to the community? How was He a glutton and a drunkard and what did that mean both in action and cultural context?!?
First, Tim shares a new piece of 'Timbits!' This is good the church is doing in the world, a counter to Tim's Troubled Times. A listener emails in and shares about her church in Canada and what it's doing to reach out to the community around them and lament the pain the church has caused there.

Mon, 26 Sep 2022 - 56min - 443 - 369 - In Your Attempt to Both Sides Everything...
In Your Attempt to Both Sides Everything...This episode, Mike and Tim attempt to tie up the conversation on Faithful vs. Effective. Mike brings some miserable musings on Al Mohlerand his recent speech to 'pray, vote and stand' against the left and it's place amongst the marrying of the evangelical and politically right. This deepens the conversation on how we are to reimagine and think beyond the two dimensional political reality we live in. How can we usurp our 'two-sides' thinking to have a more nuanced and Christlike view of the world and our neighbors? Tim has a terrible time with the recent political stunt by Governors DeSantis and Abbott shipping immigrants to Martha's Vineyard. What do we do when human lives are used as pawns? If we don't fight, then what??
The bulk of the episode is centered on a critique Mike was given via email on both sidesing everything. Mike responds and a conversation is had about the true thesis of these last few episodes as well as most 'political' VOXOLOGY episodes. Is there a both sides? Is there life beyond the binary? How are we meant to resist? How do we advocate for change?

Mon, 19 Sep 2022 - 1h 04min - 442 - 368 - Not Over, But Alongside - with Pastor Suzie Lind
Not Over, But Alongside. Today, Pastor Suzie Lind joins Mike and Tim to conclude a conversation that started two weeks ago about fighting back against a religious right that is looking for power in order to mandate morality. How do we approach this practically and not rhetorically? What does a cruciform life look like when we can see others in our tribe exerting power over? How do we not become that which we resist? What of the fear of Christians openly embracing and advocating violence?
Mike brings in some content on what it means to be not-of-this-world. How did Jesus speak to Israel resisting Rome? Who are we in that conversations and how do we apply Jesus's specific words then to now? How do we remain a people of hope when so many in our own tribe advocate fear???

Mon, 12 Sep 2022 - 1h 44min - 441 - 367 - Masters of (Culture) War
Masters of (Culture) War.Last week, Tim posed a question to Mike on how we respond to an Evangelical culture that seeks power over. It turned into an episode long conversation. Today, Mike and Tim read and interact with listener responses and questions on the topic. How do we avoid all the same trappings of culture warring and empty loving? Is loving your neighbor only within your community, passive? Is advocating a 3rd way just a practice of avoiding what the right and left are up to? How do we avoid rhetoric that is devoid of action, or, worse, rhetoric that removes involvement? What does it mean to turn the other cheek? Mike also brings in ideas from and discusses the book "American Evangelicalism: Embattled and Thriving," by Christian Smith (Found HERE) to further the conversation.

Mon, 05 Sep 2022 - 1h 23min - 440 - 366 - Faithful vs. Effective
Faithful vs. Effective. Two words we possibly misunderstand or misapply to our lives, our 'calling,' and our relationships to both God and one another. Today, Tim hijacks the conversation to ask Mike about fighting back against a religious right that is looking to emulate Hungary and seize more governmental power in order to mandate morality. It is a very raw conversation. Tim is struggling with the 'focus on your community' approach and asks Mike about staying idle when people are being harmed in God's name. How far does staying on your cross extend? What is the actual cruciform posture? If we aren't meant to also seize power to help, what are we supposed to do? Do we allow people like Floridian governor Ron DeSantis to bastardize and weaponize scripture to rile up his religious base? Sean Feucht?? What was Jesus's approach? What of the early church? As Howard Zinn posited, can we not stay neutral on a moving train?

Mon, 29 Aug 2022 - 58min - 439 - 365 - Insulted - Part Two: Blasphemer
Insulted - Part Two: Blasphemer. We continue this week with a series that attempts to understand the human side of Jesus by way of the insults levied against Him. What is a blasphemer? How do we understand that now vs. then? What was the accusation? In what ways was Jesus accused of blaspheming, and what were the implications? How did He respond and what does His response teach us? What did it show the accusers at the time?? So much to unpack from simple Bible story verses we've all heard and likely gloss over.

Mon, 22 Aug 2022 - 1h 02min - 438 - 364 - Insulted - Part One: Bastard
Insulted - Part One: Bastard. Tim has been asking for a while about the human side of Jesus. While we celebrate and teach heavily on the deistic part of Jesus, being one with God, we know very little about the human part of Jesus. Mike and Tim begin a series today looking at part of that, through the insults and degradations hurled at Jesus in the gospels, and what they meant at that time. What do they show us? How was Jesus's lineage in question? What did His birth say about him, culturally? What was in question? Why did Jesus's birth play out the way it did? What are the cultural implications?
First, Mike and Tim read a couple of emails responding to the topic of being cruciform as Nurse Practitioners, etc. and prescription addiction, from two listeners who work in similar situations. And another that offers a different perspective to the Jordan Peterson/masculinity conversation, from a listener who has been made to feel unwelcome in church communities.

Mon, 15 Aug 2022 - 1h 05min - 437 - 363 - Light - Part Five: Radar Love
Light - Part Five: Radar Love. JK! Last week wasn't the final installment of our 'Light' series. Today we (might) wrap it up, looking at our inherited understanding of evangelism, a play on ‘This Little Light of Mine…’ Where does God exist? Is it He that arrives or us? Why do we use terminology like’Bringing Jesus to people,’ or inviting God? Are there certain areas or times God is present?
Also: Is Cracker Barrel ‘woke?’ How can or should a brother speak into a seemingly toxic relationship his sister is in? How can that be done in a cruciform way? How, too, can a Physician’s Assistant navigate patients who are in pain and want prescriptions that could be harmful? How can that conversation be had in a Christ like way?? These are real world, real time circumstances…

Mon, 08 Aug 2022 - 1h 10min - 436 - 362 - Light - Part Four: Truthing in Love
Light - Part Four: Truthing in Love. Today we wrap up our series ‘Light’ on understanding evangelism, a play on ‘This Little Light of Mine…’ What does a cruciform life actually mean and look like? What does it mean to take up your cross? What does it mean to come down from your cross? How have we distorted the scripture on ‘Speaking Truth in Love?’ What is the full context of that chapter and book? As we see the message of the gospel; as we come to understand good and bad krinó (judgment); as we come to realize what a cruciform life looks like as a community, how do these all reform our understanding of evangelism?? How do they change our view of Sunday morning??
We also respond to a few emails pushing back on our criticism of Jordan Peterson and his video on masculinity.

Mon, 01 Aug 2022 - 1h 11min - 435 - 361 - When Necessary, Use Words
When Necessary, Use Words. Mike and Tim dive in on listener emails asking questions and clarifications about the current series on evangelism (there are so many great, provoking questions!). If Jesus is the full representation of God, where do women fit into the image of God? How is evangelism more than kind words? As the version of ‘American Christianity’ festers over seas, how can we ‘one another’ our brothers and sisters, not only in the world, but within the church? What does Paul mean by ‘ambassador’ in 2 Corinthians and how are we to think about and relate to his meaning? There is so much more…

Mon, 25 Jul 2022 - 1h 11min - 434 - 360 - Light - Part Three: Jordan Peterson, Masculinity & ‘One Another’
Light - Part Three: Jordan Peterson, Masculinity & ‘One Another.’Yowza. Today, we continue our conversation on 'evangelism.' First, Mike and Tim discuss Sean Feucht's not surprising enormous pay day from his 'let us worship' shenanigans. How do people like Sean hide in plain sight and why do some gravitate to it? Also, Mike and Tim react to a new video from Jordan Peterson on the need to save masculinity and how it's dying out. Why aren't men coming to church as much anymore? What is healthy masculinity? What is it that needs to be saved or do we need to let it die? Is evangelism imposing our understanding of righteousness on others? Or is it something else? Is it the Church's job to influence society, or is it our job to be influenced by Christ?!? Mike gives us 59 (!) 'one another' statements from the New Testament and then he and Tim discuss what those mean for us as Christians and how they speak to our place in the world.

Light - Part Two: Fullness of the Fullness. Today we continue the series on the idea of Evangelism called ‘Light,’ a play on ‘This Little Light of Mine…’ Jesus was the fullness of God. How did people in the 1st century witness as Jesus followers? How do we reflect Jesus? How do we reflect the fullness of God? What postures and attitudes do we embody in this world? How do we image the beauty of Jesus? And how does all that play into “evangelism?” If it isn’t arguing people in or convincing someone to pray a prayer, how does it actually look?
