To Be Human - Part Seven: Not So With You. Misuse of power? Misunderstanding power? Non discerning power? Today, we explore the idea that Christians should not seek worldly power, but instead focus on loving their neighbors and embodying the teachings of Jesus. There are two types of power: power over and power with. This sets the stage for a deeper exploration of power dynamics in future episodes.

This episode, Mike and Tim explore the concept of power and distinguishes between power over and power with: Power Over is the ability to control or influence others, whether through force, expertise, or social systems. Power With, on the other hand, is relational power that works in cooperation and mutuality. Jesus exemplifies power with, as he serves and empowers others instead of exerting power over them. The conversation also highlights the dangers of using power over, as it inhibits God's work in the world and goes against the nature of the kingdom of God.

Further, as we explore the difference between power over and power with, what is the importance of power under (with), which is exemplified by Jesus? What of the temptation to use power over and the need for discernment in using power in a way that aligns with the teachings of Jesus? The conversation touches on topics such as Christian nationalism, the role of the church, and the importance of community and shared power. To Be Human - Part Six: Power Over vs. Power With. Today, Mike and Tim discuss the concept of gatekeeping and the misuse of power in various contexts, including the church and society. They explore the idea of ruling and having dominion over creation, emphasizing the importance of modeling God's rulership, which is based on love, humility, and invitation. This opens us up to our main topic: power over vs. power with. Mike and Tim highlight the need to hold convictions in a way that promotes curiosity, conversation, and hospitality, rather than using them to exclude or shame others. Further, they discuss the concept of power and how it is used by God, the idea of power over versus power with, and how power with is invitational and cooperative, while power over is hierarchical and coercive. First off, we were hit on all sides in this episode. Construction, sick kid interruptions, audio problems... it was bumpy. However, we stuck the landing...

How Should We be Political? Today, Mike and Tim welcome another Tim, Dr. Timothy Gombis, to explore the role of the church in politics and how to navigate political engagement as Christians. The church IS a political entity and the Christian way is political from beginning to end!

However, the focus should be on practicing the politics of the cross, which involves service, love, and advocacy for the weak. It is important to resist being seduced into practicing the politics of this world and instead focus on the politics of the kingdom of God. We also highlight the need to balance mental health with being concerned about justice issues and the importance of taking action at the local level.

Further, we discuss the dangers of getting caught up in national politics and the media's role in fueling anger and division, the idea of loyalty to Jesus and how it should shape our political engagement and the importance of focusing on local issues and taking action in our own communities. We need compassion, empathy, and understanding in our interactions with others, especially those with different political views.

To Be Human - Part Five: It Is Good. Today, Mike and Tim discuss the concept of ruling and what it means to be human. To Be Human - Part Two: Statuesque. Today, we explore the concept of the image of God in humanity. The "image and likeness" of God were standard statue words used in the ancient Near East, referring to physical representations of deities or kings. How is it that being the image of God is not limited to specific capacities or religious aspects of life, but encompasses the totality of human existence? What is the importance of understanding that humans are meant to be living statues of Yahweh, representing God's presence in the world? What are the implications of the "image of God" for human relationships and the restoration of humanity's image through Jesus?

First, we look at an email about the topics of faith, guidance, and discernment in relation to partying, sex, and drinking. What is the importance of a centered approach rather than a bounded approach to these topics? The goal of Christ-following is to become like Jesus and overcome behaviors that hinder our pursuit of Jesus-likeness. And of course, Tim pushes the need for critical thinking and discernment in engaging with culture.

New series alert! To Be Human...Today, we begin a new conversation around what it means to be human. In this episode, Mike and Tim dive into the meaning of the first sentence of Genesis and the significance of the words 'bereshit' and 'reshit.' What is the purpose of Genesis and the creation story?  Why is it important to understand the literary devices used in the text?

Further, we explore the conflict between science and faith in interpreting Genesis. We emphasize that Genesis is not meant to answer scientific questions about ‘how' and ‘when' things happened, but rather the ‘what' and ‘why.’  The importance of curiosity and humility in biblical interpretation is highlighted, as well as the use of symbolism and metaphor in Genesis. We also discuss the flexibility of interpretation and the role of liturgy and tradition in faith. It concludes by emphasizing the role of Jesus and the gospel in understanding Genesis.

Today, we have Dr. Nijay Gupta back to talk about his new book, "Strange Religion: How the First Christians Were Weird, Dangerous, and Compelling."In this book, Dr. Gupta discusses and explores the social force of early Christians in the Roman Empire. He highlights the contrast between Roman religion and the beliefs and practices of the early Christians. The early Christians defied Roman hierarchy and power, rejected rituals of appeasement, and emphasized direct access to God. They also practiced gift-giving and generosity, expanding their acts of kindness beyond their own community.

The early Christians challenged the notions of Romanness and monoculturalism, embracing diversity and inclusivity. What are the parallels between Christianity and Roman religion? How does Christianity resemble the Roman religion, including hierarchy and power, appeasement and divine judgment, and elitism and limited access? We talk about the influence of preachers, the role of the church, the professionalization of pastoral ministry, elitism and limited access, building up each other, the teachings and lifestyle of Jesus, authentic relationship with Jesus, dying to everything but Jesus, the daily question of dying, the scandal of pastors falling from grace, and making Christianity weird again...

Gospel & Gombis: Part Five. Okokok. This is a long one. Brace yourselves.

The Holy Spirit. Mike and Tim put Gombis on the spot with questions about the Spirit. What is it? What is it's role? What is Paul's understanding of Jesus as part of the triunity and his teaching on the Holy Spirit? They address misconceptions about Paul's teaching and how evangelicals often misread his views on the Spirit. The conversation concludes with a discussion on the Spirit's work in the church and individualized Spirit talk in Acts. Everyone discusses the interpretation of Ephesians 5:18 and the concept of being filled with the Spirit. Revelation - Part Twenty Seven: Smoke on the Water. Today, Mike and Tim discuss the concept of the lake of fire and its symbolism in the book of Revelation. Merry Christmas!!! What are the origins of this imagery in the Old Testament, particularly in the stories of Sodom and Gomorrah? Does the lake of fire represent destruction rather than eternal conscious torment? What is Hell??? Does the text really advocate for an eternity of torment and separation for "unbelievers?"

- The lake of fire in Revelation represents destruction rather than eternal conscious torment.

- The imagery of burning sulfur and smoke rising is borrowed from the Old Testament, particularly the stories of Sodom and Gomorrah.

- Being left outside the city symbolizes exclusion from the New Jerusalem and the consequences of practicing vices associated with empire.

- Understanding the symbolic nature of these images is crucial for interpreting the book of Revelation. Revelation challenges us to ask hard questions and reckon with our complicity with empire.

- The book of Revelation is not about predicting the end times, but rather about reflecting on our own actions and the actions of the church.

The God Who Hides. What happens when I don’t feel presence? Why are desert times necessary in my relationship with God – I don’t need them in my other relationships... The Only Way Out is Through. Mike and Tim spend some time unpacking a couple listener emails that deal with hopelessness and worship. This prompts Mike to revisit Walter Bruggeman’s typology:

Revelation Part Twenty Five: Babylon, Continued. Rome becomes Babylon. In this vision, john as blended together words and images from every single OT passage about the downfall of ancient Babylon, Tyre, and Edom. (Isa. 13, 23, 34, 47; Jer. 50-51; Eze. 26-27). John’s showing how Rome is simply the newest version of the OT archetype of humanity in rebellion against God. They come together and form nations that exalt their own economic and military security into a false God. This isn’t something limited to the past or the future. It’a a portrait of the human condition throughout history. And "Babylons" will come and go leading up the day when Jesus returns to replace Babylon with his kingdom. But how will Jesus’ kingdom come? Father, we lift up all those who have lost family and loved ones, whose lives have been upended and destroyed. We grieve and lament with them. God, might you meet them in their pain, meet them in their need. God, would you show us how to intervene, how to love in a time of hate, how to be peace makers in a time of war and death. Father, we pray for those who have been taken from their families, that they would be released. That you would meet them in their despair and bring hope and safety and restoration.

Lord have mercy. Christ have mercy.

Father, we ask that you would soften the hearts of our leaders and clear their eyes, that they might advocate for humanities flourishing, not it’s destruction. Lord, give them courage and discernment to make hard decisions in the face of adversity and greed that restore humanity to those they may see as the other.

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.

Revelation - Part Twenty: Captured by Rapture. One aspect of the content of Revelation that needs to be stressed once again is that, there is no rapture in the book of Revelation (It is supposedly narrated at 4:1, the introduction to the book’s central vision). The book of Revelation clearly teaches, and calls on its readers to pray for, the return of Christ. It is not the second coming of Christ that is absent from Revelation but the alleged rapture of the Church by Christ in a kind of secret prequel to the real second coming. How has it become so convoluted? Where did these ideas like Left Behind come from? How did they get so off course? Pre/Post Tribulation? The Millennium?? First, Mike and Tim read a listener email asking for clarification. When reading the imprecatory Psalms, is the desire to see our enemies' destruction a godly attitude? Should we be 'joining' in with the martyrs and call for God's judgment to rain down on those who do evil?

Revelation - Part Nineteen: Thunderstruck. Seals & Trumpets & Bowls, Oh My! These will serve like nesting dolls as they harken back and comment on current events. Last episode we saw the OT Days of the Lord references. Now we see what John was commenting on in his own time.

God’s warning judgments through the seals and trumpets did not generate repentance among the nations, just like the exodus plagues only hardened Pharaoh's heart. But the lamb, he conquered his enemies by loving them, dying for them and now the message of the Lamb's scroll reveals the mission of his army, the church. God’s kingdom will be revealed when the nations see the church imitating the loving sacrifice of the lamb. Not killing their enemies, but dying for them. It is God’s mercy shown through Jesus’ followers that will bring the nations to repentance. and this surprising claim is the message of the open scroll that John has placed at the exact center of the entire book.

God’s love gives rise to his judgement; God’s judgment is not the problem, but the solution to a problem. Adam and eve now sit under the serpent’s authority, tearing heaven and earth and unleashing the accuser’s destructive power on God’s good world. So much!!!

Revelation Part Seventeen: The Lion & The Lamb. Today we spend some more time in chapter 5 of Revelation, focusing on the imagery around the Lamb who sits on the throne. What language is parodied language of the time? Whose blood is on the lamb? How has that been co opted to support religious violence? What is it actually advocating for? What does this show us about old testament violence and the stumbling block of God supporting and purporting said violence? How do we reconcile victory through defeat and how does it inform our faith and daily lives?

Revelation - Part Fifteen: The Throne at the Center of the Universe.Epic title. Back to Revelation and a look into the Emperor Domitian, who reigned from 81-96. When Domitian (81-96 AD) became emperor there was significant change in the demand for deification. Domitian was obsessed with his own (and his brother Titus' and father Vespasian's) deity. Augustus once explicitly forbade his fellow citizens to address him with the title “Lord.” He did not want to be master of slaves, but first citizen of the empire. But Domitian ignored his forefather and followed in the ways of Nero….He did not wish to be a citizen among his fellow citizens, but a superhuman being in charge of the destiny of humanity. Coins of the era call Domitian the father of the gods... Domitian insisted on being called "Lord and God" whenever he was mentioned or addressed.

How does John address this? What are we to take away?

First, Tim shares some troubled times with how our language and words can incite violence against the LGBTQ community and how everyone, regardless of your opinion, needs to choose words more wisely. Laura Ann Carleton was murdered in Lake Arrowhead California for displaying a pride flag outside her shop. People can become militarized and violent by language they hear from the pulpit, news etc. Words carry power.

Also, Mike and Tim discuss an email about therapy. Should you seek a Christian therapist or does it matter?

Revelation - Part Fourteen: Sexual Immorality. Here we go... Image. Likeness. Desire. Dominion. Human. Purity. Angels. Animals. Holy moly. God created us fully human – not to be animals, not be angels. An animal – physical body, but no spiritual life. An angel – spiritual life, but no physical body. God didn’t not create us angels, nor did he create us animals… Human beings are unique in creation – fully physical and fully spiritual…two distinct realms brought together in humans. So what does that mean for sex?

Theological Considerations: 

Who am I? 
Beloved by God in brokenness/I am a guest at Jesus’ table Log and Speck - I am deeply broken, too
What community am I a part of? 
I am part of a community that is called to offer hospitality to the outcasts and marginalized - FORSAKING ALL OLD CREATION DYNAMICS  I am part of a community has done real harm to LGBTQ+ people -  they are wounded deeply and set up in the worst possible state to figure this out (rejected by family and church) I am part of a community that regularly fails to to include single, divorced, and gay people.  I am part of a community that is focused on sexuality disproportionately relative to it’s emphasis in the scriptures  I am part of a community that has lost any authority to instruct others on sexual matters

Revelation Part Thirteen: Poverty & Riches.Some sound issues today as Mike's mic decided to defect... “To the angel of the church in Smyrna write..."This episode we continue our decent into Revelation. Laodicea was an affluent city, located strategically at the intersection of three major trade routes. The city quickly became a banking and trading center, known especially for its woolen carpets and clothing. Also in Laodicea was one of the ancient world’s most prominent medical schools, especially famous for its eye and ear treatments. 

Scholars have found cultural allusions in this message not only to Laodicea’s wealth but also to the local production of eye salve, the use of black wool, and especially the city’s lack of a good water supply. How does that fit metaphorically? How does Las Vegas fit in? What does the "lukewarm, I'll spit you out" reference have to do with it? There are so many cultural references... where do we fit in? John recognized that the acceptance of Rome’s mythology was an act of giving worship to evil masquerading as divine authority.

There was another school shooting in Tennessee last week. Evelyn Dieckhaus, 9; Mike Hill, 61; William Kinney, 9; Katherine Koonce, 60; Cynthia Peak, 61; and Hallie Scruggs, 9. Mike walks us through the event itself, scripture being bastardized in response and what the Bible actually says about violence. Lord, we grieve so heavily, again, over this loss of precious and innocent life. We pray that their communities would come alongside them, love and sit with them. We pray that we do not grow calloused and accepting of this continuing and escalating violence. Father, we ask that you would soften the hearts and open the eyes of your people. That they would see this violence for what it is. That they would choose life and the edification of humanity over rights and tools of destruction Father, we pray that you would give courage and integrity to those we have chosen to lead. Give them discernment and clarity, wisdom and empathy. Father, allow them to see these tragedies for what they are and to act accordingly. Father, grant us all the courage to see your kingdom here and now, to advocate for the upside down nature of you vision and to love our neighbors, all of them. May they know us by our love.

Songs of Resistance: Wandering From the Fold. AKA, Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing. Welcome to another mini series of The Wanderer, this time focused on trying to understand and define worship. Each episode will look at the history of a particular Hymn and its origin story, how it may have roots in Justice and what it may encourage us to participate in today. Further, every episode will end with a recorded version of the song by Tim, to listen to after walking through the song's history. 

This week, a well known oft sung Hymn and one of Tim's favorites: "Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing."  What was Robert Robinson's (Bob) journey? While this isn't a justice oriented song as the others have been, what can we glean? How does scripture in form the lyrics? What's an Ebenezer?? How did his own song come back to minister to himself?

Tim covers some of the history, but not all. Bob had a long journey that was fraught with turmoil. He had a long ministry that many loved but ostracized him at times as well. He was married and had 12(!) kids.

This is the long road.

Revelation - Part Three: Apocalypse. This episode, Mike and Tim begin a conversation on 'genre,' and how the original audience understood and entered into the 'apocalyptic literature' of Revelation. How does the first sentence set up the book? What are we to understand from the time period? How does time itself inform how we approach Revelation? How is the Bible like a Barnes & Noble or any bookstore? How have we done a disservice to the text with a linear approach?  

First, Mike and Tim discuss an email asking about the "He Gets Us" ad campaign that will feature during the Super Bowl. Is this how "evangelism" should look? Would Jesus use this approach? Is more eyes on Jesus a good or bad thing, especially in a commercial setting?  And Tim shares some Tim's Troubled Times over extreme conservatives who are attacking schools and why did Trump execute three times as many people during his Presidency that the US had in the last 60 years?  

Characteristics of Apocalyptic Literature:  

1. Pseudonymous 

2. Narrative Form  

3. Filled with Symbolism  

4. Employs esoteric language interpreted through a heavenly intermediary  

5.  Characterized by Dualism  

6. Treats the final events as imminent. 

7. Expresses a pessimistic view of the present time 

8. Deterministic Future

This week, it is what is most likely the most famous and well known song of all time: "Amazing Grace."  What is the history of this song? How has it lasted so long? Why is it so popular?

Tim covers some of the history, but not all. There was Newton being exiled himself, his father rescuing him. The relationship between himself and William Cowper, William Wilberforce... William Walker (so many Williams...). The Second Great Awakening, Dwight Moody... There is so much to cover. But the main piece is, what is Grace? How does it inform our lives? How does justice and resistance play in?

This is the long road.

How has the way we have individualized the Gospel effected its message? What did the phrase ‘the Kingdom of God’ cultivate in people and their communities in Jesus’s time? What was the invitation then? What is the Kingdom invitation now? What have we added to it to confuse or distort the invitation?

Taking Christ out of Christmas. It's Christmas time here at Voxology. Songs of Resistance: Minuit Chrétien. Welcome to another mini series of The Wanderer, this time focused on trying to understand and define worship. Each episode will look at the history of a particular Hymn and its origin story, how it may have roots in Justice and what it may encourage us to participate in today. Further, every episode will end with a recorded version of the song by Tim, to listen to after walking through the song's history. This first episode looks at the Christmas time hymn, "O Holy Night," and how it became an abolitionist anthem.  How can it challenge us today? What role does music like this serve in our lives?

Here, in this first episode, Tim briefly speaks to the genesis of this series and his struggles with modern worship and how they led to his no longer leading (or singing, or participating, or not cringing). What is worship? What does God ask of us in this? How to we enter into counter programming to rewire the way we worship and operate on a daily basis.

Women, Theology & Leadership. Meet one of our new favorite guests, Dr. Lynn Cohick. Dr. Cohick joins us to dive deeper into the scripture commonly used to advocate for women's non leadership roles in the Church. Dr. Cohick walks us through the broader context around Paul's letters and Genesis, specific women and the roles they played in early Church history and how Paul broke social constructs to advocate for Kingdom Dynamics. It's a really wonderful conversation!

Dr. Cohick serves as Provost and Dean of Academic Affairs of Northern Seminary in Lisle, Illinois. She is also leading the development of DMin and MA programs in women's studies, and the Women's Center for Leadership at Northern Seminary.

How White Evangelicals Think: The Psychology of Conservative White Christians.This episode, Mike and Tim sit down with Dr. Dave Verhaagen to discuss his new book about how white Evangelicals think. We hear how folks in this country (and probably without as well) look at how many white Christians, particularly evangelicals, continually espouse beliefs and opinions that are seemingly antithetical to the Christian faith (holding racist attitudes / supporting conspiracy theories / aligning with nationalistic and authoritarian movements / becoming hostile toward the different and marginalized). Dave, a nationally board-certified psychologist and author, "tackles the challenge of explaining the psychology behind what has become the unique mind of the modern white Christian. Each chapter explores one or more robust psychological principles that help make sense of why white Christians think like they do" So, how do we define evangelical? How can we all view the world so differently? Where does all the fear come from? And the narcissism?!?

What's Up, 1 Timothy 2?!? All roads in the conversation for Biblical Masculinity and Biblical Femininity lead here: 1 Timothy 2, the scripture most used to keep women out of leadership roles. Today, Mike takes us on a deep dive to show how this is NOT what Paul was advocating for. What is the full context of Paul's letter? Who is he talking to? What is he addressing? We have seen that Paul had women in leadership roles throughout his ministry, so what is he saying here? What is Gnosticism? How does the full context of Genesis, the gospel and everything in-between inform Paul's writings? This verse has been used for decades to  sublimate women. While you can do all things with a verse taken out of context, maybe don't :)

Woman Up! Biblical masculinity does not mean devaluing women. Mike and Tim begin a conversation that will (next week) lead into 1 Timothy. What does the Bible actually say about women? Where does the complimentarian ideology come from? How did Jesus upend customs? How did Paul?

Man Down!  Today, Mike and Tim do some follow up work on the biblical masculinity conversation. So many listeners emailed in with follow up questions and the hosts sit down to talk through a few. How do the Sons of Thunder fit into the masculinity conversation? Was Jesus counter to the patriarchal culture? And if so, how? How does Sutton Turner's divulgence of Mark Driscoll's violent behavior, the attack on Paul Pelosi and the Jerry Falwell Jr. documentary play into all of this? 

One of the questions asked about Ephesians 5 and how Paul's command for wives to submit to their husbands worked to undo the 'curses' from Genesis. Mike takes us on a deep dive into the Greek, the culture of the time and the Church in Ephesus. What was the cultural dynamic and hierarchy? How did Paul's teaching usurp that? How do complementation folks misuse this scripture and what are they missing??

This resurgence of 'biblical masculinity' has become a large conversation in the evangelical arena.

Man Up!  There has been a resurgence of Christian rhetoric around 'Biblical Masculinity,' with conferences like Man Up! and books that speak to the 'Masculinity of Jesus,' railing against the effeminate, egalitarian, 'soft' Jesus. Today, we take walk through Genesis 1 to see what the Bible actually says about gender and the the imposed hierarchy of male and female. Why do Christians want to uphold the macho man, head of the house aspect of masculinity so much? How does the creation story unfold? Were women created solely as servants and the 'lesser' sex? How do the words during the human creation actually translate? What was our intended purpose and how did our 'curses' after the garden speak to that? How did everything get so twisted? There's a lot to unpack.

A Captive Mind. Today, Mike and Tim chat with new friend Chris Nye about his new book, "A Captive Mind: Christianity, Ideologies, and Staying Sane in a World Gone Mad." Chris is a former pastor and current author who lives in Portland, Oregon. We have a great discussion about ideologies and how we become subject to them. How does Christianity relate to this captivity? What do we do when folks let go of 'faith' for rhetoric? Having the Mind of Christ. Today, Mike and Tim sit down with Pastors, podcasters and leadership trainers Ben Sternke and Matt Tebbe, to discuss their new book "Having the Mind of Christ: Eight Axioms to Cultivate a Robust Faith." The group talks about their Gravity Leadership program, both the podcast and their leadership training, as well as the church they founded, The Table, in Indiana. What lead them to plant the church? What did they see in a previous church experience and how did they change those habits? What does it look like to 'have the mind of Christ?'

Insulted - Part Three: Friend of Sinners. This episode we are venturing back into understanding Jesus through the insults that were hurled at him. Today, it's the claim that he was a 'glutton, a drunkard and a friend of sinners.' As Jesus subverted what was expected of Him, He also provoked conversations about who was welcome and why. What was the cultural context of this? What did sinner mean? Who was calling Jesus this and what was the reason for it? What is the history that leads up to Jesus and what dis His actions say to the community? How was He a glutton and a drunkard and what did that mean both in action and cultural context?!?

In Your Attempt to Both Sides Everything...This episode, Mike and Tim attempt to tie up the conversation on Faithful vs. Effective. Mike brings some miserable musings on Al Mohlerand his recent speech to 'pray, vote and stand' against the left and it's place amongst the marrying of the evangelical and politically right. This deepens the conversation on how we are to reimagine and think beyond the two dimensional political reality we live in. How can we usurp our 'two-sides' thinking to have a more nuanced and Christlike view of the world and our neighbors? Tim has a terrible time with the recent political stunt by Governors DeSantis and Abbott shipping immigrants to Martha's Vineyard. What do we do when human lives are used as pawns? If we don't fight, then what??

The bulk of the episode is centered on a critique Mike was given via email on both sidesing everything. Mike responds and a conversation is had about the true thesis of these last few episodes as well as most 'political' VOXOLOGY episodes. Is there a both sides? Is there life beyond the binary? Faithful vs. Effective. Two words we possibly misunderstand or misapply to our lives, our 'calling,' and our relationships to both God and one another. Today, Tim hijacks the conversation to ask Mike about fighting back against a religious right that is looking to emulate Hungary and seize more governmental power in order to mandate morality. It is a very raw conversation. Tim is struggling with the 'focus on your community' approach and asks Mike about staying idle when people are being harmed in God's name. How far does staying on your cross extend? What is the actual cruciform posture? If we aren't meant to also seize power to help, what are we supposed to do? Do we allow people like Floridian governor Ron DeSantis to bastardize and weaponize scripture to rile up his religious base? Sean Feucht?? What was Jesus's approach? What of the early church? As Howard Zinn posited, can we not stay neutral on a moving train?

Insulted - Part One: Bastard. Tim has been asking for a while about the human side of Jesus. While we celebrate and teach heavily on the deistic part of Jesus, being one with God, we know very little about the human part of Jesus. Mike and Tim begin a series today looking at part of that, through the insults and degradations hurled at Jesus in the gospels, and what they meant at that time. What do they show us? How was Jesus's lineage in question? What did His birth say about him, culturally? What was in question? Why did Jesus's birth play out the way it did? What are the cultural implications?

First, Mike and Tim read a couple of emails responding to the topic of being cruciform as Nurse Practitioners, etc. and prescription addiction, from two listeners who work in similar situations. And another that offers a different perspective to the Jordan Peterson/masculinity conversation, from a listener who has been made to feel unwelcome in church communities.

Light - Part Five: Radar Love. JK! Last week wasn't the final installment of our 'Light' series. Today we (might) wrap it up, looking at our inherited understanding of evangelism, a play on ‘This Little Light of Mine…’ Where does God exist? Is it He that arrives or us? Why do we use terminology like’Bringing Jesus to people,’ or inviting God? Are there certain areas or times God is present?

Also: Is Cracker Barrel ‘woke?’ How can or should a brother speak into a seemingly toxic relationship his sister is in? How can that be done in a cruciform way? How, too, can a Physician’s Assistant navigate patients who are in pain and want prescriptions that could be harmful? How can that conversation be had in a Christ like way?? These are real world, real time circumstances…

Light - Part Four: Truthing in Love. Today we wrap up our series ‘Light’ on understanding evangelism, a play on ‘This Little Light of Mine…’ What does a cruciform life actually mean and look like? What does it mean to take up your cross? What does it mean to come down from your cross? How have we distorted the scripture on ‘Speaking Truth in Love?’ What is the full context of that chapter and book? As we see the message of the gospel; as we come to understand good and bad krinó (judgment); as we come to realize what a cruciform life looks like as a community, how do these all reform our understanding of evangelism?? How do they change our view of Sunday morning??

We also respond to a few emails pushing back on our criticism of Jordan Peterson and his video on masculinity.
