- 607 - 377. "Train Your People to Act Up" - Anthony Rowett
Anthony Rowett is back on the show and is always bringing some good talking points. Jumping right in on the importance of training, but more importantly, training your people to act up. One of the greatest compliments for any company officers is that their crew performed at the same level whether you were working with them or off for the tour. Setting the expectations up front and working with your crew to know the roles of the next guy will ultimately set your company up for success. A true testament to your mentorship is letting your people soar. With the right foundation, competent officers push their people to be better, to do more and to leave the nest. "Upholding the standard" is a non-negotiable for Anthony. He is dedicated and passionate about the intensity it takes to do this job correctly. His mentors gave him a solid base to build from and he knows that it is his responsibility to pass along the discipline it takes to excel. His commitment to training has lead him to forming the Alabama Firefighters Training Foundation which has recently changed names because of the tremendous success this not for profit has had. Now titled, the National Firefighters Training Foundation, this foundation brings training across the country while keeping costs extremely low or none at all. The mission is to provide top shelf training and exposure to some of the most influential names in the fire service to everyone. Their partnerships have helped them fulfill this mission and the foundation, just like Anthony, is not slowing down anytime soon.

Recently retired from Fairfax County, VA Fire and Rescue, Assistant Chief of Operations Dan Shaw has had a great run. With 32 years in the fire service, the past 29 with Fairfax County, he realized it was time to take a step back and let others continue to push the job forward. Early on, Dan had a tremendous love for the engine, busier the better. He didn't think promoting up the line was really for him but over time he realized in order to have a voice, you need to have a seat at the table. During his journey, he challenged himself to learn and educate himself along the way. As a student of the fire service, his drive and passion has opened many doors for him. Taking part in the West Point Leadership Program, being apart of the Traditions Training cadre, writing articles, authoring a book with his good friend Doug Mitchell and being the keynote speaker at FDIC 2022, his list of accomplishments is numerous. But his humbled foundation and passion for his people has kept him grounded. New to retirement, Dan has plenty on his plate and he looks forward to future opportunities. He has so much to offer and his delivery is crisp, Dan Shaw will continue to impact the job as he continues to grow his first beard and finds other things to fill his everyday. But one thing is certain, he has plenty still to do which will continue to push this job forward.

Eric Valliere has put in his time over the past 33 years. Currently, Eric is the Assistant Chief of the Scottsdale, AZ Fire Department overseeing Emergency Services, managing Operations, EMS and Safety. His opportunities today are much different then his early days, but he hasn't lost sight of what it's like to be a firefighter. He is working hard to protect his people and while maintaining a fire culture that is professional and proficient while making safety a priority. Eric works for his people and a big part of that is doubling down on initiatives that will create an environment of safety. Admittedly, firefighting is a dangerous job, there is no denying that, but there are safety initiatives that can be enacted to ensure we are doing everything possible to mitigate unnecessary risk. The "Safety Culture" term tends to have a bad connotation when talked about within the kitchen or front bumper, but Eric has a realistic approach to it. Safety is not to hamper our duties or limit our operations; it is to coexist with our strategies and tactics while creating an environment of protection for our people. Eric's commitment to safety includes being the Chair of the Fire Department Safety Officers Association (FDSOA) ensuring initiatives and practices are vetted and proven so that we can reduce the unnecessary risks for our firefighters. Assistant Chief Eric Valliere is for everything that is good about the job and his firefighters. He works hard to ensure that the "Safety Culture" within the fire service doesn't become the stigma it can sometimes be.

Daryl Liggins felt the time was right to retire from the Oakland, CA Fire Department. His 23 years with Oakland, 30 in the fire service all together, deciding to step away from his daily routine and take on retirement kind of just felt right. It was time. His impressive career and contributions to his own department as well as the fire service in general is one that is worthy of hearing about. Over his tenure, riding in the busiest companies, retiring as the Captain of Training and speaking nationally, Daryl came to understand that the process is all worth it. Hard is slow and easy is fast. This resonates with his approach in most things. He is an all in guy who admittedly loves diving down rabbit holes to learn everything he can about a topic. So when his passion for the engine company became evident, he went all in, learning what he could from everywhere he could find. His contributions to hose and nozzle pairings, his in depth review of moving water and commitment to innovating for the better helped create a legacy that he leaves behind. Daryl's contributions are felt throughout the Oakland, CA Fire Department and the entire fire service is better for it. While settling into retirement, his daily fire service dealings are slowing, but he continues to make an impact teaching and sharing his insights and experiences with those who want more. Like Daryl, the fire service continues to innovate and educate, and with guys like Daryl Liggins at the helm, we have a great mentor helping steer the ship.

Growing up with the highest respect for Fire Engineering magazine, hosting David Rhodes on the podcast was powerful. The episode goes in depth on the "safety culture" concerns of today, his powerful remarks at FDIC highlighting the "revolution" and most importantly, sharing his own story of cancer beside his good friend Mike Ciampo. David's courage of sharing personal information is evident but his real courage and commitment is ensuring the fire service remains on a forward path. Steering the ship and finding his way into his new position comes with many mentors and influencers who can help guide, but it's exciting to watch David take on some hot issues head on. He believes in accountability and upholding the very best traditions of the fire service. Getting out there, collaborating with other platforms and conferences, Chief Rhodes knows he needs to be present and to support other initiatives outside the Fire Engineering umbrella. As small as the fire service is, it's plenty large enough for the "revolution" to happen and to be an active participant. We must be present and be willing to challenge the status quo and initiatives to ensure it represents the fire service requirements. We cannot lower our guard and allow complacency and outside influence to change our trajectory. With David Rhodes at the helm, integrity and character will remain paramount as we continue to push forward.

During his colorful career, Dave would take spots all over the city to round out his experience. His words, "I was a tourist".
