Against Odds by Lawrence L. Lynch

Against Odds by Lawrence L. Lynch is a fast-moving detective novel set amid the spectacle and confusion of the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair. Carl Masters, an experienced member of the Secret Service, arrives at the White City with his fellow detective, Dave Brainerd. Their mission is to identify and capture Greenback Bob, a counterfeiter, and Delbras, a sophisticated criminal connected with theft and deception. Surrounded by magnificent buildings, crowded exhibitions, foreign villages, lagoons, and thousands of visitors, the detectives discover that the fair provides perfect cover for confidence men and dangerous conspirators.
Masters relies on careful observation, disguises, patience, and intelligent deduction rather than dramatic heroics. A seemingly ordinary encounter with a rural couple soon exposes an attempted swindle and leads him deeper into a network of suspicious characters. As people disappear and new threats emerge, the investigation expands into a tense search involving hidden identities, robbery, betrayal, and personal danger.
Blending mystery with a vivid portrait of the World’s Columbian Exposition, Against Odds offers suspense, historical atmosphere, and an engaging view of early American detective work. Lawrence L. Lynch builds the story through steadily developing clues, memorable encounters, and unexpected turns that keep the outcome uncertain until the final chapters.
