A retired principal in Wauchula, Florida, spent almost 40 years around other people’s kids, and she taught Sunday school at her church on top of that. Her daughter Kaila trusted her with the grandkids. Then something happened at the house on Kazen Road right before Christmas, and Kaila stopped trusting her mom, even as part of her wondered if she was overreacting. Less than a year later, a restaurant camera caught Tracey Nix carrying Kaila’s baby girl, Uriel, into a Beef ‘O’ Brady’s for lunch with old friends. This is the story of a family that ended up on opposite sides of a Florida courtroom, and of a jury that never heard one little boy’s name. It’s also the story of a daughter who turned to her mother in front of a judge and told her exactly where she stood.

Matt Shepard was a theater kid from Casper, Wyoming, who treated strangers like friends he hadn’t met yet. In the fall of 1998, he was starting over at the University of Wyoming in Laramie and helping plan Gay Awareness Week. Across town, 2 roofers named Aaron McKinney and Russell Henderson were drinking, and on the night of October 6 they all ended up at the same bar. By the next morning, a Laramie cop was looking at a bloody gun and a pair of shoes in Aaron’s pickup, and the man those shoes belonged to was still out past the edge of town. This episode follows Matt and the people who loved him, including a friend who answered a church’s anti-gay picket line with a wall of angels in white wings. We also get into the fight over motive that’s still going decades later, and why Aaron McKinney keeps changing his story.

Flip Wilson got big laughs on NBC with the line “the devil made me do it.” In early 1981, newspapers stuck that same line on a homicide case out of Brookfield, Connecticut. Arne Cheyenne Johnson was 19 and engaged to Debbie Glatzel, who groomed dogs at a kennel run by a man named Alan Bono. Debbie’s family believed her little brother David had a demon in him, and paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren agreed with them. During one of the family’s religious rites, Arne dared the thing to come into him. Months later, a long afternoon at a place called the Mug and Munch led back to that kennel, and a defense lawyer tried to bring the devil into a Connecticut courtroom. You’ll hear how a judge handled a demon defense.

In the fall of 1974, a church group in Yorkshire prayed over a man all night long and came out of it believing they had driven dozens of demons out of him. By sunrise, those same people were working the phones, scared for his wife. Michael Taylor was an out-of-work butcher in Ossett, a wool town losing its mills and its pits. Christine Taylor was raising their 5 kids and kept showing up for her husband as he changed in front of her. This episode follows a charismatic fellowship group, a 22-year-old preacher, a vicar who said he saw murder in a man’s eyes, and a chain of phone calls that each pointed somewhere else. It also gets into how one Sunday morning pushed the Church of England to rewrite its rules on exorcism, and the demon count that keeps changing every time somebody tells this story.

A big Colonial-style house sat on Ocean Avenue in Amityville, New York, with a statue of the Virgin Mary out front and a little sign on the lawn that said High Hopes. The DeFeo family had lived there since 1965. On a Wednesday night in November of 1974, the oldest son walked into his usual bar and asked his friends to come back to the house with him. What they found put 112 Ocean Avenue in the New York Times. A few years later, the same house became the star of a book and a movie sold as a true ghost story, and the man who tore that story down had a front-row seat in the courtroom. This episode goes back to the family behind that sign, and there’s a slime in here that can’t decide what color it is.

Bartow, Florida is an old phosphate town in the middle of the state, and Randy Voigt was born and raised there. He and his wife Susan bought a house there in 2006, and their son Joseph grew up inside it. The family called him JoJo. As a grown man, JoJo got arrested for firing 15 shots into the ground at that house, and a Tampa TV station dug up what he told officers about why. About a year later, he picked up a battery charge and walked out of jail on bond. Then on a Saturday night in December, a lookout went out across Polk County for the car he was driving. You’ll hear what Joseph told deputies once Orlando police had him, and how it lines up with what he told police back in 2023.

Pink ribbons started showing up all over Glenview, Illinois, and every one of them was for a 16-year-old sophomore named Lilly Bova. Lilly was learning to drive and making plans to spend the whole summer at the pool with her best friend. On the last Saturday of spring break, her family says she let a boy she knew into the apartment while her older sister was home. What her sister heard that morning, and what Lilly’s mom found under a bed on Mother’s Day, set off a fight between the sheriff’s detectives and the prosecutors who decide who gets charged, with Lilly’s family caught in the middle. This week we get to know Lilly and the people who loved her, and we walk through the one word on her death ruling that keeps this case wide open. Anyone with information can call Cook County Sheriff’s Police detectives at 708-865-4896.

A T-shirt police seized from Timothy McGhee in the Arizona desert said, "Fugitive. Can't see me." Back home in Atwater Village, a working-class neighborhood on the LA River, he'd been a heavy kid who came home from school with a bloody nose, and later he was a leader in the Toonerville gang. Police tied him to as many as a dozen killings, and a lot of the people who saw things kept quiet, including a teenager in the LAPD's own Explorer program. Then a cellphone dropped at a shooting scene sent Timothy to a friend named Christina Duran for help, and she ended up giving police a recorded statement. This episode follows the manhunt that ended with a tip from a desert newspaper reader, and a juror whose doubts about the witnesses got him pulled off the jury.

Kacie Woody picked her screen name, modelbehavior63, from a Disney movie and her big brother's football number. She was a 13-year-old sax player with a big honking laugh, and she lived at the dead end of a dirt road outside Holland, Arkansas, where calling a friend in town cost long distance. In 2002 she spent her evenings in Yahoo chat rooms. One of the boys she met there was Scott, a football player from Georgia. Another was Dave, who said he was an 18-year-old guitar player from San Diego with a dying aunt in Arkansas. On a cold Tuesday night in December, Kacie stopped typing in the middle of a chat, and a boy in Georgia started begging anybody at her house to go check on her.

Andrew Bagby grew up starring in his best friend's homemade movies in California, and by 2001 he was a family medicine resident in Latrobe, Pennsylvania. One November morning, a man picking up cans in Keystone State Park found him face down on the gravel. Police zeroed in on a fellow doctor Andrew had broken up with a few days earlier, and within a couple of weeks she was back home in Newfoundland, pregnant with Andrew's baby. Andrew's parents, David and Kate, packed up and moved across the continent to be near their grandson, Zachary, while the murder case crawled through 2 countries. Andrew's oldest friend, Kurt Kuenne, started making a movie so Zachary could get to know his dad. This is the story behind the documentary Dear Zachary, told in order from the beginning.

An Apple Watch in a Tipp City, Ohio, house counted 105 steps in the minutes before Caleb Flynn called for help. His wife, Ashley, taught Bible classes for LifeWise Academy and coached 7th grade volleyball. Caleb led worship at their church, and years earlier he made it to Hollywood Week on American Idol, where he said in a promo interview that he loved his wife more than anything. Early on February 16, 2026, Caleb told a dispatcher somebody had broken into the house and shot Ashley. Investigators started with a garage door and a missing handgun, and then they found a church affair that ran to about 107,000 messages. We go through who Ashley was and the marriage she was living in, and then we go minute by minute through that night.

Savannah Gold texted her mom or dad every time she got to work, and she did it in full sentences with actual punctuation. She was 21, an artist who put art school on hold to stay home while her mom went through chemo, and she waited tables at a Bonefish Grill in Jacksonville, Florida. One evening in August 2017, a text came from her phone saying she'd met a great guy and was running away, and her mom knew the second she saw it that Savannah didn't write it. Savannah's car was still sitting in the restaurant parking lot with a flat tire and her purse in the back seat. The detective who caught the case got his first real look at what happened from a camera the city was about to tear down. Her family never believed that text for a second.

A soldier on an Army funeral detail stops for lunch at the Hooters on Williamson Road in Roanoke, Virginia, and strikes up a conversation with one of the waitresses. Her name is Tina Foster. She wants to model, and he wants to take her picture that same night for $200. Tina leaves her parents' house in blue jeans and clogs and heads for the Hooters parking lot. Days later, police are passing out copies of 3 photos found in her white Mustang, pictures of a young woman her own family can't identify. This one follows a man who drove about 6 hours in a single day to keep a photo appointment, and a waitress at another Hooters outside Richmond. It's the story of Tina Foster and Christopher Haynes.

In June 2003, a 14-year-old boy known as John was stabbed twice in an alley behind a row of shops in Altrincham, Greater Manchester, and his 16-year-old friend Mark told detectives a hooded stranger had attacked them. The investigation that followed took police through CCTV footage and tens of thousands of lines of internet chatroom messages, and it ended in a conviction no British court had ever handed down before. This one starts in a Manchester teen chatroom back in the MSN Messenger days, with a gifted grammar school kid who kept disappearing into his bedroom, a college boy with a part-time restaurant job, and a married MI5 spymistress who typed in all caps and had very big plans for both of them. It's a story about loneliness and a secret so elaborate that the judge said skilled fiction writers would struggle to invent it, and the whole thing comes down to 1 misspelled word.

renda Wright Lafferty and her 15-month-old daughter, Erica, were murdered in their American Fork, Utah home in July 1984, and the homicide investigation led straight to her brothers-in-law, Ron and Dan Lafferty. This is the true crime case behind Jon Krakauer's Under the Banner of Heaven, rooted in Mormon fundamentalism and a so-called removal revelation that sent 2 brothers to trial.Brenda was a campus TV anchor and a brand-new mom, and she was the one person in the Lafferty family who told 2 self-declared prophets exactly what she thought of them. This story starts in a barber's chair in Payson, Utah, and before it's over, there's a yellow legal pad with 4 names on it and a buffet line in Reno that makes no sense at all. It's about a family that followed its most intense brother off a cliff, and about Brenda, who refused to follow.

In April 2022, 59-year-old Sherry Cole and her 7-year-old grandson, Jessie Allen, were found dead outside their home on Old Snapps Ferry Road in Limestone, Tennessee. The homicide investigation, led by the TBI and Greene County detectives, turned quickly to the 16-year-old suspect living under the same roof, Jordan Allen. A recorded confession, a juvenile transfer to adult court, and a false confession defense set up a Greene County murder trial that took 4 years to reach a jury. Sherry was the mamaw her daughters ran home to at the lowest points of their lives. Jessie was a 1st grader who thought riding along to the farm supply store with his papaw made him a working man. Somewhere between a late-night phone call and a Greeneville courtroom, a teenager's story kept changing, and a grandfather who lost his whole family ended up on the witness stand listening to his own grandson point at him.

In April 2003, Tacoma Police Chief David Brame shot his estranged wife, Crystal Judson Brame, in a shopping center parking lot in Gig Harbor, Washington, while their 2 young children waited nearby. The homicide set off a state and federal investigation into how a man who failed his very first psychological evaluation ended up running the entire Tacoma Police Department.Crystal was a tiny Tacoma girl who danced ballet and wanted to be a lawyer, and she married into a family where carrying a badge was practically hereditary. What went on inside their gray-shingled house on Eagle Creek Lane involved a stopwatch, an odometer, a bathroom scale, and a 5 dollar hanging plant, and by the end, the neighbor who used to gossip about their Christmas lights was watching the street for the chief of police. This is the story of the people who were warned about David Brame, starting the year he applied for the job.

Ashley Smylie was a 40-year-old high school math teacher in Brandon, Mississippi who was shot and killed inside her own home on March 19, 2024, and the suspect deputies arrested nearby was her 14-year-old daughter, Carly Madison Gregg. Home surveillance footage drove the homicide investigation, an insanity defense, a nationally livestreamed trial, a first-degree murder conviction, and an appeal the Mississippi Supreme Court finally ruled on in August of 2026.
This one is about the people inside that house. A mother who buried one daughter and rebuilt an entire life around the other. A stepfather who still mouths I love you to the girl who shot him. A straight-A kid with a 30 on her ACT at 13 and burner phones hidden in her bedroom, and one week of medication changes her defense team built an entire insanity case around. There is a security camera hidden in a refrigerator that almost nobody talks about. There is a text message sent from a phone that should never have been in that hand. And there is a why that the courts have now formally closed and this family is still arguing about in public, out loud, on opposite sides.

In Clinton Township, Michigan, 33-year-old Jordan Wheeler was killed on October 19, 2023, inside her own home, and the criminal investigation that followed led to a 2025 conviction for her estranged husband, Steven Wheeler, on charges of first-degree premeditated murder. The trial built its case on 911 audio, forensic evidence, and testimony from the couple's young son, turning what started as a routine domestic call into one of Michigan's most talked about homicide convictions.
Jordan did everything you're told to do when a marriage turns dangerous. She left. She filed for divorce. She started over with her sister. Then a scared phone call from her own son pulled her back through that front door one more time, and what happened next got caught on a 911 line that never got the chance to hang up. This is the story of a mother's last decision, a 9-year-old boy who had to describe it on a witness stand, and a piece of gun law that came just months too late.

Susan Cox Powell disappeared from her West Valley City, Utah home on December 6, 2009, launching a homicide investigation that centered on her husband, Josh Powell, before he killed himself and their two young sons in a 2012 murder-suicide. Despite a decade of searches, forensic evidence, and a $98.5 million negligence verdict against the state of Washington, Susan's body has never been found.
A husband tells police he took his toddlers camping at midnight, in a blizzard, on a work night, and came home to find his wife gone. That's the story Josh Powell gave investigators, and it barely survives contact with the evidence. Behind it sits a father-in-law running an obsessive surveillance operation out of his own house, a marriage built on quiet financial control, a will Susan wrote a year before she vanished warning that her death might not look like an accident, and 807 unexplained miles on a rental car. This is the story of what investigators found, what they missed, and the stretch of Idaho highway that's never been searched.

Dan Markel, a 41-year-old Florida State University law professor, was shot twice in the head in the garage of his Tallahassee home on July 18, 2014, in a murder-for-hire plot built by his former in-laws. The FBI and Tallahassee police investigation that followed used wiretaps, SunPass toll records, and a cooperating hitman to win five convictions, including first-degree murder verdicts against former brother-in-law Charlie Adelson and family matriarch Donna Adelson.
This one begins with a mop, a stepladder, and a hyperactive kid in Montreal who grew up to teach punishment theory to law students, and it ends with a 76-year-old grandmother serving life in a Florida prison. In between there's a divorce, a 50-50 custody schedule, a $1 million offer, a rented silver Prius trailing a man around town for two days, and a family so rattled by one undercover FBI agent that they started calling a murder "TV" on their own phone lines. Twelve years of trials, appeals, and one Florida law now named after the victim. Here's how a fight over 500 miles became a contract killing.

Between 1978 and 1980, Gerald and Charlene Gallego abducted and murdered at least 10 victims across California, Nevada, and Oregon, including Sacramento teenagers Rhonda Scheffler and Kippi Vaught, in a homicide investigation detectives came to call the Sex Slave Murders. The FBI arrested the couple in November 1980, and what followed was a controversial plea bargain, a conviction built on a co-defendant's testimony, and 2 death sentences that people still argue about today.
A friendly young woman walks up to 2 girls at a Sacramento shopping plaza and offers to get them high. She is 21 years old and she looks like somebody's babysitter. That is the entire mechanism, and it worked for more than 2 years across 3 states while investigators were still working with phone books and blood typing. This one is about the people. A boy who inherited something from a father he never laid eyes on, and a girl who had every advantage and set it on fire. It ends with an ordinary young man in a parking lot doing the one thing that stopped it.

On February 24, 2023, pediatric ICU nurse Christine Banfield, 37, and a stranger named Joseph Ryan, 39, were killed inside a home in Herndon, Fairfax County, Virginia, in a double homicide staged to look like a home invasion. The investigation eventually turned on Christine's husband, former IRS criminal investigator Brendan Banfield, and the family's 22-year-old Brazilian au pair, whose cooperating testimony and forensic evidence of a staged crime scene produced two aggravated murder convictions and a life sentence.
Christine spent her early career as a sexual assault nurse examiner, sitting with strangers on the worst nights of their lives, and she died inside a story her own husband wrote to make her look like the author of it. This one has a fake profile on a fetish website, a young woman from São Paulo who came over to watch a toddler, a detective who got moved out of his unit right after his findings pointed the wrong direction, and a federal investigator who was certain he understood how these cases get solved.

On March 18, 2018, 44-year-old Keeno Butler was killed inside his Erie, Pennsylvania apartment in a domestic violence homicide that ended with his girlfriend, 44-year-old Windi C. Thomas, pleading guilty to third-degree murder. Detectives, the Erie County Coroner, and forensic evidence documented more than 90 traumatic injuries on the victim's body, and the case closed with a plea deal and an 18-to-36-year sentence.
The whole world turned this into a headline about body weight and forgot the rest. Keeno was a grandfather at 44 who loved music and dancing and working, and who was, by his sister's account, an occasional pest she would give anything to have back. His family got a vigil, a plea deal, and a mother who kept calling his name into an empty house. Buried in the file is a coincidence so small and so Erie that it ties this apartment on East Avenue to the most notorious crime in the city's history, 15 years earlier. The prosecutor stood in front of reporters and asked them to stop reducing it to one detail. Nobody listened.

Kelly and Jason grew up next door to each other, married young, and made a promise on their wedding night that most people would have laughed off by breakfast. Twelve years later, in a corner of Michigan where the nearest anything is 45 minutes away, that promise turned into a plan. This one has a woman at the center who never once stopped talking, and almost never told the same story twice. There is a tree in an Indiana park with 3 words carved into it, and those 3 words are the reason anyone knows what happened to Chris Regan at all.
In October 2014, 53-year-old Air Force veteran Christopher Regan disappeared from Iron River, Michigan, and the homicide investigation led detectives straight to his coworker and lover, Kelly Cochran, and her husband Jason. With no body, degraded forensic evidence, and a police chief running a department of 4 officers, the cold case sat for 18 months until an FBI tip, an autopsy in Indiana, and one detective's very unusual tactic broke it open into a first-degree murder conviction and a life sentence without parole.

On August 2, 1993, 4-year-old Derrick Robie was lured into a wooded area one block from his home in Savona, New York, and murdered. The suspect was 13-year-old Eric Smith, a neighbor, and the homicide investigation that followed made Smith the youngest defendant ever tried as an adult for murder in New York State, leading to a second-degree murder conviction, a sentence of 9 years to life, and 11 parole board hearings across 27 years.Savona had fewer than 1,000 people in it, and Derrick knew most of them by name. He sat on a corner greeting neighbors and the town called him the unofficial mayor. When he disappeared on a walk he had made a hundred times with his mother, everyone assumed an outsider had come through. The truth was already inside the village, riding a bike, and it had been leaving warning signs for 4 years that nobody knew how to read. This is a story about two boys, one town, and a question a family friend could not stop thinking about.

In April of 1987, 17 year old Patricia Ann Hannah disappeared after a school dance in York, Alabama, and two weeks later her body was found behind an Alabama Power office. A fellow Sumter County High School student named Shelton Jerome Holloway, a special education student with a documented intellectual disability, was arrested and eventually convicted based largely on a videotaped confession. The legal question at the center of the case wasn't whether he said the words on that tape. It was whether a young man functioning at a first grade level could actually understand what he was giving up when he waived his rights. This one pulls you into a small Alabama town, a missing girl, and a confession that split experts, courts, and advocates for decades. The crime and the trial end up asking two completely different questions, and neither one has an easy answer.

Anne Marie Fahey, a 30-year-old appointments secretary for Delaware's governor, vanished from Wilmington in June 1996 after having dinner with prominent attorney Thomas Capano. The investigation that followed became Delaware's first murder conviction ever secured without a body, a weapon, or a confirmed cause of death. This one starts at a dinner table in Philadelphia and ends with a fisherman patching bullet holes in a cooler he had no idea he'd fished off the Jersey coast. In between, there's a diary that changes tone completely over 2 years, a mistress who bought the murder weapon, a brother with a fishing boat, and a courtroom collapse that undid one of Delaware's most connected men in real time. This is a story about charm, control, and what happens when someone spends their whole life assuming they'll never get caught.

Bobby Joe Long murdered at least 10 women across Tampa, Florida between March and November 1984, evading investigators until a 17-year-old survivor's memory cracked the case wide open. The homicide investigation, later corroborated by FBI forensic evidence and Long's own confession, led to his conviction and a 1988 death sentence.A body that survived collision after collision since childhood. A marriage that fell apart after a motorcycle wreck seemed to rewire something in him completely. And then, in the middle of a killing spree that had five agencies scrambling, a Krispy Kreme employee riding home on her bike got pulled off it by a man with a gun to her head. What she did over the next 26 hours, while blindfolded and terrified, is the reason this case ever got solved at all. This is the story of Bobby Joe Long, the women he killed, and the teenager who out-thought him and spent the rest of her life making sure he never touched anyone else.

In September 2004, 43-year-old Lisa Nichols was raped and murdered inside her Turnerville, Alabama home just days after Hurricane Ivan tore through the region, and the man responsible had been living under a stolen identity for four years thanks to a fingerprint system that failed him. Jeremy Bryan Jones walked free through three separate arrests before investigators connected him to the crime, and once he was caught, he didn't stop talking. He confessed to killing over 20 people across five states. Some of it was true. A lot of it wasn't. This is the story of a man who learned early that charm gets you further than violence, and what happens when an entire justice system can't tell his lies from his truth.

Picture the most harmless looking couple you can imagine. Now picture that couple with a farm, a livestock scam, and a body count. Ray and Faye Copeland spent fifty years married before they became, at 66 and 69, the oldest couple ever sentenced to death row in American history. This one has a quilt in it. It has a list. It has a man who talked his way out of a barn and lived to make the call that ended it all. It's one of the strangest true crime cases you'll hear this year, and it's all true.
Ray and Faye Copeland murdered at least five homeless drifters on their Missouri farm between 1986 and 1989, luring each man with promises of work before Ray executed them with a .22 rifle. Investigators eventually recovered a handwritten list of twelve names in Faye's own hand, only five of which were ever matched to a body.

In December 2020, a Solana Beach, California woman named Jade Janks drugged and killed the man she'd called her father for over two decades, then spent New Year's Day disguising his body as a pile of trash in their shared driveway. Thomas Merriman was a beloved butterfly conservationist. Jade Janks was the stepdaughter who'd cooked him dinner every night of the pandemic. Somewhere between those two facts sits a discovery on his computer that she said broke something in her permanently, and a string of increasingly desperate text messages to a man she called "the fixer" that ended up telling prosecutors almost the entire story. This is a case where the victim's public image and the killer's private allegations never got to sit in the same room together, because the woman who could have proven her own motive burned the evidence herself, on purpose, the same night he died.

Her bedroom walls were covered in framed photos of serial killers. Her bookshelf was stacked with true crime and gangster biographies. And when the moment came, prosecutors say she used everything she'd absorbed from years of true crime obsession to try to talk her way out of what she'd done. This is the story of a relationship that turned lethal, a woman who thought she'd studied the perfect getaway, and the digital trail that proved otherwise.
Frankie Fitzgerald, 25, was found dead from a fatal knife wound to the throat in a Havant, Hampshire home on July 17, 2022. His girlfriend, Shaye Groves, was convicted of his murder after a five-week trial at Winchester Crown Court, where forensic evidence, mobile phone data, and body camera footage dismantled her claim of self-defense.

On September 26, 2022, the body of 53-year-old Sacramento HVAC contractor Michael Harding was discovered inside a vacant home for sale on Glasgow Road in Burkesville, Kentucky, shot four times. The investigation that followed led Kentucky State Police, FBI agents, and detectives across three states to California Highway Patrol Captain Julie Harding and her secret partner Thomas O'Donnell, a 60-year-old amateur hitman from Napa Valley, in one of the most disturbing murder-for-hire cases of the decade.
This is a story about a 22-year law enforcement career that ended in a conspiracy, a $220,000 cash withdrawal nobody could trace, and 194 phone calls between two people who thought they had everything figured out. We follow Michael Harding from a quiet Sacramento neighborhood to an empty room in rural Kentucky where someone he had never met was waiting for him. We look at how a wiped phone, a Ring camera, a Netflix login, and one rambling call to a brand-new supervisor told investigators everything they needed to know. There is a verdict in this case. There is also a question no verdict could ever answer.

In 1980, along the Florida coast from Spring Hill to Daytona Beach, a chilling pattern emerged that Detroit investigators would later connect to serial killer Billy Mansfield Jr. Six women and teenage girls vanished or were found buried beneath a mobile home in Weeki Wachee Acres, with DNA technology in 2022 finally identifying one victim as 16-year-old Theresa Fillingim after 42 years. The FBI continues searching for additional bodies as recently as June 2026.
But this story doesn't start with bodies in the ground. It starts with a father who couldn't stop touching children, a son who learned violence was normal, and a rural Florida community in the 1970s where nobody asked questions and everybody stayed quiet. You're going to meet women who went out for a drink and never came home, a teenage girl at a campground shower who became a Jane Doe for decades, and a family compound so messed up that neighbors just drove past it faster. This is about what happens when institutions fail at every level, when a kid grows up watching his dad evade prison for rape and learns that's just how the world works. We're going through the psychology, the family dynamics, the cultural moment that let predators like Mansfield operate across state lines with no database to connect the dots. You'll hear about the prison escape, the bag brothers, the woman who got away, and the brother who's still living on that property forty years later.
This case is still open.

On March 10, 1998, seventeen-year-old Jeffrey Brendan Franklin attacked his own family inside their home at 1305 Camelot Drive in Huntsville, Alabama, killing his parents Gerald and Cynthia Franklin and critically wounding three of his four younger siblings with a sledgehammer, hatchet, butcher knife, and a mechanic’s rat-tail file. The Huntsville Police investigation led by detective Mac McCutcheon, the journals and Satanic writings recovered from Jeffrey’s bedroom, the prescription psychiatric medications he had been taking, and Alabama’s pursuit of the juvenile death penalty turned one afternoon into one of the most studied family-violence cases of the late twentieth century.
You always hear about cases like this happening in the bad part of town, and this one happened in the part of town where every dad worked for NASA. Camelot was a subdivision in the safest stretch of Rocket City, Alabama, and it sat at the center of the wildest convergence of late-nineties American chaos you can think of: pediatric Prozac, the Satanic Panic, a cop who was also a Baptist preacher, and a global human rights fight that helped reshape American law four years later. This is the story of an honors-track American family, the seventeen-year-old who came home from school first, and the quiet that settled over a brick house on Camelot Drive that nobody on the cul-de-sac has ever fully shaken.

On July 5, 1978, sixteen-year-old best friends John Mayeski and Michael Baker were abducted, murdered, and left in the brush near Miramar Lake in San Diego, California, by Robert Alton Harris and his younger brother Daniel during the planning of a bank robbery. The investigation, the trial, the criminal profile of the suspect, and the fourteen-year appeals process that followed turned this homicide into one of the most consequential capital cases in American legal history.
Robert Alton Harris came into the world already broken. He was born premature because his father kicked his pregnant mother in the stomach. He was abandoned at fourteen, diagnosed with schizophrenia at sixteen, and released from federal custody with fifty dollars and a Greyhound ticket at nineteen. The murders he committed were callous in a way that still leaves people speechless when they read the case files. But the story underneath them is older, stranger, and far more painful than any of the headlines from 1992 ever let on.

In 1928 New York City, ten-year-old Grace Budd walks out of her family’s Manhattan apartment with a soft-spoken “farmer” named Frank Howard and disappears, pulling her parents, detectives, and eventually a courtroom into one of the most disturbing homicide investigations in American history. The search for Grace exposes a pattern of missing children, a mild-mannered house painter named Hamilton “Albert” Fish, and a criminal profile that collides with questions of insanity, responsibility, and what justice looks like when the suspect looks like somebody’s grandfather instead of a monster.
In this episode, we walk slowly and carefully through Albert Fish’s life, from a brutal orphanage childhood to the day he knocks on the Budd family’s door, and we sit with the human moments around him: the parents who just want their kid to get a job, the kids playing in city hallways, and the detective who will not let this case go. It is a heavy story, but told like a late-night conversation with a friend, with room for context, a little observational humor where it fits, and a focus on the people rather than just the headlines.

In February 2010, 17-year-old Mackenzie Cowell disappeared from the Academy of Hair Design in Wenatchee, Washington, and four days later her body was found on the banks of the Columbia River. The homicide investigation that followed became the largest multi-agency case the region had seen in years, eventually drawing in the FBI and zeroing in on a 29-year-old beauty school classmate named Christopher Scott Wilson, a man with a Hannibal Lecter tattoo on his forearm and a history that made investigators stop and take a very long pause. What started as a missing person report in a small apple-farming town turned into a murder case full of fake informants, a high-profile defense attorney, DNA evidence on duct tape, and a conviction that still sparks debate online today. This is a story about a driven teenager with dinner plans, a man whose obsessions lived right out in the open, a community with a long memory about being burned by the law, and a plea deal that left everybody holding something that felt more like a question mark than an answer. He walked out of prison in December 2023. He still says he didn't do it.

The 2008 murder of 13-month-old Amora Bain Carson in Tatum, Texas remains one of the most disturbing capital cases in modern American history. Her mother, Jesseca Bain Carson, and the mother's boyfriend, Blaine Keith Milam, were both convicted of capital murder after a sheriff's investigation, forensic evidence including 24 human bite marks, and a partial jailhouse confession placed them at the center of what they later called an exorcism. Milam was sentenced to death; Carson received life without parole under the Texas law of parties. He was executed by lethal injection on September 25, 2025.
This one moves slowly through the parts most people don't know. There's a boy who was raised in a sickroom instead of a classroom, and a teenage girl who came into a small inheritance and lost herself somewhere inside it. There's a Ouija board, a pawned chainsaw, and 30 hours that ended with the smallest possible victim. There's the bite mark science, the IQ tests, and the question of who was steering whom. Werner Herzog couldn't stop thinking about it. Neither could the courts, for 17 years.

The 2016 murder of Kaylee Sawyer in Bend, Oregon shocked a town that thought it was untouchable. Edwin Enoc Lara, a Central Oregon Community College campus safety officer who had failed his police psychological evaluation, abducted and killed the 23-year-old student in his marked patrol vehicle, sparking a multi-state manhunt, a federal kidnapping case, and the legislation now known as Kaylee's Law.
This is the story of how one community college dressed its security guards up to look exactly like cops, then handed a man with documented warning signs the badge, the cage car, and the keys to the campus. Kaylee was walking home after a fight with her boyfriend. He pulled up wearing the full uniform, offered her a ride, and the back door locked behind her. What happened next exposed years of institutional failures nobody acted on. By the end, two states were involved, a survivor named Aundreah Maes was facing him down in court, and the entire state of Oregon was rewriting how campus security operates.

In Orange County, California, between October 2013 and March 2014, registered sex offenders Steven Dean Gordon and Franc Cano abducted, raped, and murdered at least five women while actively wearing state and federally mandated GPS ankle monitors. The investigation, led by Anaheim homicide detective Julissa Trapp, eventually cracked the case when a victim's body surfaced on a recycling conveyor belt, triggering a digital dragnet that matched both men's trackers to the crime scenes.
The system that was supposed to make these men impossible to ignore was watching everything and doing nothing. Two convicted predators living together, hunting together, cutting off their ankle monitors more than once and literally walking away… and the response was basically a stern letter.

In April 2008, licensed vocational nurse Kimberly Clark Saenz committed one of the most disturbing healthcare serial killings in American history at a DaVita dialysis clinic in Lufkin, Texas. The homicide investigation connected Saenz to five patient deaths and four aggravated assaults after eyewitnesses watched her draw concentrated household bleach into syringes and inject it into active venous lines. The FBI, CDC, and FDA toxicologists used a groundbreaking forensic biomarker called 3-chlorotyrosine to confirm the poisonings, leading to a capital murder conviction in 2012.
This case has every element that makes true crime so hard to look away from. A small East Texas town. A clinic full of vulnerable patients who trusted the woman in scrubs standing over them. A nurse with a fractured past, a collapsing marriage, and an addiction nobody at work seemed to notice. And two patients sitting in dialysis chairs who looked across the room, realized what was happening, and decided to do something about it before the woman in the white coat got to them next.

In 2011, Richard Beasley of Akron, Ohio was convicted in the homicide investigation surrounding the murders of Ralph Geiger, 56, David Pauley, 51, and Timothy Kern, 47 — three men lured to a remote Noble County location through a fraudulent Craigslist job posting, then shot and buried in shallow graves. A fourth victim, Scott Davis, 49, survived a gunshot wound and escaped through the Ohio woods after dark, triggering a digital forensics investigation that ultimately put Beasley on death row.
Here's what makes this one different: Richard Beasley was not a ghost. He was the large, white-bearded man everyone in Akron called Preacher Rich. He spent years sitting across from vulnerable people in jail visiting rooms and courtroom hallways, making himself indispensable to them, so he could eventually burn it all down when the moment was right. These three men were chosen. Beasley sat across from them in restaurant booths and ran actual interviews, screening for whoever had the fewest people who would notice if they vanished. This is a story about economic desperation, a career con man's patience, and a survivor named Scott Davis who refused to die alone in the dark.

Edward Wayne Edwards, born Charles Wayne Murray, was an armed robber who landed on the FBI's Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list in 1961 before reinventing himself as a celebrated motivational speaker on prison reform, appearing on national television game shows and lecturing at police academies across the country. Investigators eventually linked him through DNA evidence to at least five confirmed homicides spanning from 1977 to 1996 in Ohio and Wisconsin, including the cold case murders of teenage sweethearts Timothy Hack and Kelly Drew.
The man who wrote a book about his own redemption was actively killing people while promoting it. He fooled federal law enforcement, national television audiences, and the entire American corrections system for decades. The person who finally exposed him was his own daughter, who had spent eighteen months matching her childhood memories against cold case databases. This is the story of Edward Wayne Edwards, and it goes places you will not see coming.

In December 2003, Nancy Dunning, wife of Alexandria, Virginia Sheriff James Dunning, was shot and killed after answering a knock at her front door, launching a cold case homicide investigation that would remain unsolved for over a decade. Ballistics, eyewitness testimony, and forensic evidence eventually linked the murder to Charles Stanard Severance, a Virginia mechanical engineer and failed political candidate who was also convicted of murdering transportation planner Ronald Kirby in November 2013 and music teacher Ruthanne Lodato in February 2014, earning multiple capital murder convictions and consecutive life sentences.
Charles Severance was a Navy Admiral's son with a University of Virginia engineering degree who somewhere between a custody ruling and a decade of solitary drift rewrote his entire reality and started knocking on doors with a .22. He had a list, a manifesto, and a philosophy he called wisdom. Three people in one of America's most outwardly stable cities answered their doors on ordinary afternoons and never walked away from them. This is that story, and it is stranger than you are expecting it to be.

On July 31, 2022, in Strongsville, Ohio, 17-year-old Mackenzie Shirilla drove a 2018 Toyota Camry into a brick wall at nearly 100 miles per hour, killing her 20-year-old boyfriend Dominic Russo and their 19-year-old friend Davion Flanagan. Black box telemetry, GPS data pulled from a teen location-sharing app, and thousands of recovered text messages combined to transform what looked like a catastrophic accident into one of the most closely watched vehicular homicide trials in Ohio history, ending in a conviction on all 12 felony counts.
Dominic had been trying to leave this relationship for years. Davion was just catching a ride home from a party. Somewhere between a curated TikTok persona, a four-year relationship held together by threats, and a dead-end industrial road at 5:30 in the morning, two young men ran out of time. By the time it was over, a medical examiner had rewritten his findings, a Netflix documentary had landed her dad on administrative leave, and one missed legal deadline, a single day, sealed every door shut permanently.

In March 2022, Eric Richins of Kamas, Utah died of acute fentanyl intoxication, with five times the lethal dose detected in his system. His wife, Kouri Richins, was convicted of first-degree aggravated murder in March 2026 following a trial built on forensic accounting, toxicology reports, witness testimony, and a handwritten letter discovered hidden in a jail cell. She was sentenced to life without parole on May 13, 2026.
What makes this case so hard to shake is the year between Eric's death and Kouri's arrest. She appeared on local television. She published a children's grief book about a boy searching for his late father's presence. She moved through her community as a brave, heartbroken widow while investigators quietly reconstructed a picture of nearly $8 million in debt, a fentanyl pipeline through her own housekeeper, and a mother connected to a separate suspicious opioid death. The financial disaster she'd been hiding from Eric for years was always going to catch up with someone. It caught up with him first.

In April 2026, Rex Andrew Heuermann pleaded guilty to the murders of at least eight women in one of the most devastating serial homicide cases in Long Island history, after a decades-long investigation by the Suffolk County Police Department and the Gilgo Beach Homicide Task Force broke the case through forensic DNA evidence, surveillance, and genetic genealogy. Victims including Maureen Brainard-Barnes, Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, and Amber Lynn Costello disappeared between 1993 and 2010 along New York's South Shore, with some remains found wrapped in burlap near Ocean Parkway.
He was an architect. He designed buildings for a living. He had a wife, two kids, and a house in the suburbs where he grew up. And on a hard drive in the basement of that house, there was a Word document with sections labeled "Supplies," "Body Prep," and "Things to Remember." This is the story of how Rex Heuermann hid in plain sight for over thirty years, how corruption inside the very police department supposed to stop him helped him do it longer than anyone wants to admit, and how a discarded pizza crust in a Manhattan trash can undid everything he thought he'd built.

In 2002, California parolee Demorris Andy Hunter shot and killed forty-one-year-old Ivora Denise Huntley in Oakland after she intervened in a domestic assault, then fled to Orlando, Florida, where he strangled and concealed the body of thirty-eight-year-old Theresa Ann Green before stealing the identity of a Washington D.C. executive to fund his life as a federal fugitive while his face aired on America's Most Wanted. Convicted of Huntley's murder in California in 2005, Hunter wasn't extradited to Florida to face charges in the Green case until 2015, with the trial concluding in April 2026 with a unanimous twelve to zero death penalty recommendation.Everyone who knew Demorris Hunter said the same thing: he was the nice one, always laughing, the one parents were glad to have around. What they didn't know was that behind that warmth he was building a body count across two states, living under a stolen name, and letting a thirteen-year-old boy grow into a man in his late thirties before anyone answered for what happened to his mother. This one is about the space between who people think you are and what you actually are, and about the people who paid the price for that gap.

On February 1, 2021, Mario Fierro, a 37-year-old social studies teacher and football coach at Cathedral Catholic High School in San Diego, California, was shot and killed outside his home by Jesse Milton Alvarez, the ex-boyfriend of Fierro's fiancée, fellow teacher Amy Gembara. Alvarez had been systematically stalking Gembara for over a year before the homicide, and despite Gembara filing a domestic violence restraining order application in January 2020, a San Diego Superior Court judge denied her petition, citing insufficient evidence of abuse under the legal definitions in place at the time. What makes this case so hard to sit with is the documented trail of warnings that couldn't clear a legal bar. A school's social media post celebrating a teacher's engagement became the starting point for a premeditated murder. A judge called the evidence a tie. A stalker called his internet searches therapeutic. And a man who spent every day of his professional life as a peacemaker walked out his front door one February morning and never made it to school. This episode covers the obsession, the institutional failures, and why the murder of Mario Fierro changed how California thinks about what abuse actually looks like.

In Lakewood Ranch, Florida, on September 27, 2020, retired U.S. Navy intelligence officer Douglas Benefield was fatally shot by his wife, Ashley Benefield, a former professional ballerina and Trump campaign staffer. The Manatee County homicide investigation led to a July 2024 murder trial in which Ashley mounted a battered spouse syndrome defense, resulting in a manslaughter conviction and a 20-year prison sentence handed down December 3, 2024.
Doug and Ashley Benefield met at a Palm Beach political dinner in August 2016, and thirteen days later they were married. Thirteen. They launched a ballet company together that imploded almost as fast as it started, burned through the lives of forty-seven international dancers in the process, and then spent years buried in restraining orders and courtrooms before arriving at the day they were supposed to be loading a U-Haul and starting something like a fresh chapter. The medical examiner's findings and Ashley's testimony told two very different stories about what happened in that bedroom. Doug's daughter Eva has been on TikTok ever since, building half a million followers and asking why.

Carroll Edward Cole was convicted of murdering at least thirteen women across California, Nevada, Wyoming, and Texas between 1971 and 1980, making him one of the most prolific and underdocumented serial killers of the twentieth century. Despite repeated contact with law enforcement, psychiatric evaluation at multiple state hospitals, and documented confessions of violent homicidal urges, Cole was discharged and released each time, enabling a decade-long killing spree that left investigators scrambling to connect cases spanning half the country.
This is not a story about a killer who hid in the shadows. Carroll Cole walked into police stations and told officers exactly what he planned to do. He sat across from psychiatrists and described his compulsions with clinical precision. He asked, repeatedly and explicitly, across twenty years, to be locked up before he hurt anyone. The system heard him every time and let him go anyway. What follows is one of the most infuriating true crime cases you will ever hear, and it is a story about a broken system every bit as much as it is about a broken man.

In February 1988, sixteen-year-old David Brom murdered his parents, Bernard and Paulette, and two of his younger siblings, Diane and Richard, with an axe at their home in Rochester, Minnesota, in what became the most notorious mass killing in Minnesota state history. The investigation by the Olmsted County Sheriff's Office, the subsequent trial involving competing psychiatric testimony, and a landmark insanity defense ruling would shape Minnesota criminal law for decades.
The Brom family was everything a quiet Catholic suburb was supposed to produce. Polite. Organized. Deeply religious. People who drove past that house felt good about living in Rochester. And inside it, a sixteen-year-old had been telling anyone who would listen, for six months, exactly what he was planning to do. They figured he was just venting. He wasn't. This episode goes inside the psychological collapse that nobody caught in time, the cultural circus that tried to blame a music tape for four murders, and the 37-year legal journey that ended with David Brom walking out of prison in 2025. Rochester is still working through it.

Ian Brady and Myra Hindley abducted and murdered five children between July 1963 and October 1965 in and around Manchester, England, burying their victims on Saddleworth Moor in what became the most devastating criminal investigation in British history. The case, known as the Moors Murders, led to their conviction in 1966, fundamentally altered British penal law, and left one wound that has never closed: the body of victim Keith Bennett has never been recovered.
There are true crime cases that disturb you, and then there are cases that change the way an entire country thinks about trust, safety, and what human beings are capable of doing to each other. This is the Moors Murders, and once you hear how Brady and Hindley operated, the neighborhood they came from, the philosophy they constructed their crimes around, and the terrified 17-year-old who finally stopped them, you will not be able to stop thinking about it. Five victims. Two killers who genuinely believed morality did not apply to them. And one grave on a moor that has never been found.

In October 1934, FBI agents shot and killed Charles Arthur Floyd, known nationwide as "Pretty Boy" Floyd, in an Ohio cornfield, closing the book on one of the most controversial manhunts in American criminal history. Floyd, a Sequoyah County, Oklahoma bank robber elevated to Public Enemy Number One by J. Edgar Hoover's newly formed FBI, was linked to multiple homicides and suspected involvement in the 1933 Kansas City Massacre, a shooting that left four law enforcement officers dead and reshaped the entire architecture of federal law enforcement in the United States.
What the official record doesn't quite capture is that back home in the Cookson Hills of Oklahoma, nobody wanted him caught. He paid doctor bills. He left cash under pillows in farmhouses where he slept. He allegedly burned mortgage documents during bank robberies, which made him either a folk hero or the most effective PR manager in Depression-era America. This is the story of a man shaped entirely by a world that kept failing him, and a government that needed a monster badly enough to possibly invent one. Forty thousand people showed up to his funeral.

For over a decade, European law enforcement hunted a woman they called the Phantom of Heilbronn, a suspected serial killer whose DNA appeared at more than forty crime scenes across Germany, Austria, and France. Her profile connected murders, burglaries, drug offenses, and eventually the killing of a police officer in broad daylight. Investigators swabbed over three thousand women, logged sixteen thousand overtime hours, and posted rewards of up to three hundred thousand euros.
She was not real.In this episode, we follow one of the most extraordinary forensic failures in modern history, a case that began with a strangled pensioner in 1993, spiraled into a years-long international manhunt, and collapsed when a dead man's fingerprints matched the genetic profile of Europe's most wanted female criminal. Along the way, a neo-Nazi terror cell called the NSU was quietly committing nine racially motivated murders that investigators refused to see for what they were.
This is the story of what happens when evidence becomes more important than the truth it was supposed to find.

In 1985, John Gotti orchestrated the assassination of Gambino crime family boss Paul Castellano outside Sparks Steak House in Midtown Manhattan, setting off one of the most aggressive FBI investigations in organized crime history. The RICO prosecution that followed resulted in Gotti's 1992 conviction on five counts of murder, racketeering, and extortion, marking the effective end of the old-school New York mob era.
What keeps the Gotti story compelling decades later runs deeper than the Brioni suits and tabloid headlines. The real architecture is a kid from the South Bronx who watched his father grind himself into nothing doing legitimate work and decided, very early, that was never going to be him. He built an empire out of that one decision, then made himself the most visible man in New York at precisely the moment the FBI needed someone to make an example of. The Dapper Don was never going to outlast his own myth, and this week we're going all the way in on why.

In June 2024, 68-year-old Timothy Bradburn flew home from Hawaii to fix a leaking roof at his Spokane, Washington house. He walked through the front door holding his suitcase and his keys, and he never set them down.
His daughter Alyssa had been planning this for three weeks. She practiced at a gun range. She wrote a journal detailing exactly what she intended to do and left it on the table for police to find. She told her father she was sick so he would walk in worried about her. She put on safety glasses and earplugs. And then she waited.
What followed was one of the most psychologically layered parricide cases in recent Pacific Northwest history: a story of a family that gave everything to a daughter who stayed, repressed memories that may or may not have been real, and a woman who smiled through her own murder trial and said she enjoyed the experience.T
his is the Alyssa Bradburn case. And the detail that reframes everything is what her father told her brother before he ever came home.

In September 1953, six-year-old Bobby Greenlease was abducted from his Kansas City Catholic school and murdered within hours, setting off the largest ransom demand in American history. The FBI investigation into the murder of Robert Greenlease Jr. by Carl Austin Hall and Bonnie Brown Heady led to a swift federal conviction, a double execution, and a police corruption scandal surrounding $312,000 in ransom money that has never been found.
This one starts with a lie told in a school hallway, and it gets stranger and darker from there. Carl Hall and Bonnie Heady were two people who had both been handed comfortable lives and burned through every bit of them, and somewhere in the wreckage they decided the solution was to steal a child from one of the wealthiest families in Kansas City. The crime itself took less than an hour. The fallout took decades. And more than half of that $600,000 ransom has never been recovered, with theories about corrupt cops, the St. Louis mob, and the Teamsters still circling to this day.

In September 2017, 20-year-old Cody MacPherson disappeared from Pemberton Township, New Jersey, launching a six-month investigation that eventually drew in New Jersey State Police homicide detectives, Ocean County prosecutors, and a forensic team working largely skeletal remains discovered near the Colliers Mills Wildlife Management Area. Alan McGinnis, a 26-year-old Burlington County man with deep roots in the Pemberton community, was arrested, charged, and convicted of first-degree murder, ultimately sentenced to 30 years without parole.
Cody played bass guitar, sang in choir, and had a daughter back in Indiana he was trying to get back to. He moved to New Jersey for a fresh start and walked straight into someone else's unresolved situation. What makes this case genuinely hard to put down is the silence: multiple people in a tight-knit community knew what happened and said nothing for six months. The only reason we know where Cody was found is because a forest warden was about to set the woods on fire.

In April 2016, eight members of the Rhoden and Gilley families were found shot execution-style across four separate locations in Pike County, Ohio, in what became one of the most extensive homicide investigations in American history. After two years of surveillance, wiretaps, ballistics analysis, and a homemade silencer recovered from the bottom of a well, the Wagner family of four was arrested in November 2018 and charged with aggravated murder, conspiracy, and related offenses.
What started as a custody dispute over a baby girl became the blueprint for a massacre that took months to plan. The Wagners were not a troubled family in the way most people use that phrase. They were a closed criminal system, run by a patriarch who taught his sons to track police officers on road trips for dollar bills, and a matriarch who regularly accessed her sons' girlfriends' social media accounts to monitor their loyalty. When 19-year-old Hanna May Rhoden wrote in a Facebook message that the Wagners would "have to kill me first" before she'd sign custody papers, Angela Wagner was already reading her messages. This is the story of the eight people they went after anyway, and the family that spent months convincing themselves it was the right thing to do.

In March 2021, the body of Matthew Dunmire, 31, was found in a remote ravine inside Cuyahoga Valley National Park in Valley View, Ohio. The federal homicide investigation led agents to Chelsea Perkins, a 35-year-old United States Coast Guard veteran who had driven 300 miles from Alexandria, Virginia, to commit the crime. Forensic evidence including GPS tracking, DNA analysis, and a recovered deleted file from her phone resulted in a federal conviction. On May 27, 2025, Perkins pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and was sentenced to 270 months in federal prison.
She had two lives running at the same time and managed both with a discipline most people cannot apply to a single one. A military veteran, an adult content creator named Selena Savage, and a woman quietly carrying a grievance that had been building for years. When she finally decided to act on it, she packed a 9mm pistol, got into her husband's Smart car, and drove three hundred miles to meet the man she was planning to kill. She spent the night with him first. Then she walked him into the woods of a national park. Investigators later recovered a fake suicide note she had written in the victim's own voice, and it tells you everything about how long she had been thinking about this.

In 1983, Anchorage, Alaska investigators connected respected local businessman Robert Christian Hansen to the murders of at least seventeen women, building their criminal profile case through FBI behavioral analysis, forensic evidence recovered from a hidden attic cache, and the survivor testimony of seventeen-year-old Cindy Paulson, who escaped Hansen in handcuffs before her scheduled flight into the Alaskan wilderness. Hansen pleaded guilty to four counts of first-degree homicide and was sentenced to life plus 461 years without the possibility of parole. Robert Hansen sold donuts. He had hunting trophies on his walls, a solid reputation around Anchorage, and a family who had no idea what was happening a few miles out past the city limits, where the roads stopped, and the wilderness swallowed everything. For twelve years, he used the Last Frontier like a private hunting ground, and the only thing standing between him and another twelve years of it was a teenager with no shoes and a pair of handcuffs around her wrists. This is the story of how a man builds two completely separate lives in the same small city, what a pipeline boom made possible for a predator who knew exactly how to read the terrain, and the girl who, with about thirty seconds of nerve and nothing else, ended all of it.

In May 1999, South Australian police breached the vault of a disused bank building in the remote town of Snowtown and found eight barrels of human remains, uncovering what would become the most prolific serial murder case in Australian history. The Snowtown murders, also known as the Bodies in Barrels case, resulted in the convictions of John Justin Bunting, Robert Wagner, James Vlassakis, and Mark Haydon for the murders of twelve victims between 1992 and 1999, following an investigation that stands as the longest and most complex in South Australian legal history.
What set this case apart from every other serial homicide in the record books was who the victims were. Every single person John Bunting killed was someone he already knew, someone he had brought close, shaped, and ultimately turned into either a weapon or a target. He built a killing operation from the most isolated and struggling people in his own neighborhood, and he made sure each of them was so deeply implicated in what had happened that silence was the only road left open. Today's episode goes into one of the most psychologically consuming cases I've ever covered, and the part I keep coming back to is just how long all of it went completely unseen.

On July 11, 1978, Kathy Kadunce, age 25, and her four-year-old daughter Dawn were found stabbed to death inside their New Castle, Pennsylvania home in what investigators would eventually classify as a ritualistic homicide connected to a Satanic cult operating in Lawrence County. The cold case investigation sat dormant for three years before a convicted serial killer named Michael Atkinson provided testimony pointing to Frank Costal Jr., a self-styled occult high priest who maintained a following of alienated young men, as the architect of the killings.
Frank Costal spent his entire adult life building himself into something impossible to ignore. He started as a carnival freak show performer, eventually returned to New Castle, filled an apartment with black curtains and plastic skulls, and built enough psychological authority over his followers that grown adults were afraid to cross him. When Kathy Kadunce discovered drugs in her house and flushed them, the consequences were unthinkable. This is the story of a traumatized child who grew into something genuinely terrifying, and the family who paid the price for it.

In 2002, Michelle Knight became the first victim in a kidnapping investigation that would span eleven years in Cleveland, Ohio, as Ariel Castro abducted three women and held them captive at 2207 Seymour Avenue in one of the most significant missing persons failures in American criminal history. Detectives failed to connect the disappearances of victims Amanda Berry in 2003 and Gina DeJesus in 2004, leaving three open cases while the suspect drove a school bus, played bass in local bands, and attended vigils for the very girl he had locked in his house, before a 937-count conviction in 2013.
Ariel Castro spent years consoling a grieving mother at community events, handing out her missing daughter's flyers, and standing at candlelight vigils on her behalf. Three women survived more than a decade of captivity through an extraordinary bond forged with each other and with a child born inside that house, and when they finally walked out on May 6, 2013, they didn't stop moving. This is a story about what people are capable of, the absolute worst of it and the most astonishing of it.

In November 1992, Angela Brosso, age 21, was murdered and decapitated on a Phoenix, Arizona canal path on the eve of her 22nd birthday. Ten months later, 17-year-old Melanie Bernas was found in the same canal system, staged in clothing that didn't belong to her. For 22 years, the Phoenix Canal Murders stood as one of Arizona's most haunting cold cases until forensic genealogy and a glass of water at a Chili's finally put a name to the killer: Bryan Patrick Miller.
What makes this one so hard to shake is the life Miller built around himself while living inside the very community he terrorized. He was a local character, a self-styled "Zombie Hunter" with a custom car, a prop gun impressive enough to land in an airport exhibit, and a regular spot at Phoenix festivals where he posed for photos with actual police officers on the weekends. Behind that persona was a man with a childhood that reads like a case study in how to manufacture a predator, a handwritten murder blueprint discovered when he was 16, and a legal system that let him walk free in 2002 when the evidence said something very different.

In October 1997, the body of Samantha Class, a 29-year-old mother of three, was discovered partially submerged in the muddy foreshore of the River Humber near North Ferriby, England. DNA evidence pointed directly at suspect Gary Arthur Allen, but in a 2000 trial at Sheffield Crown Court, Allen walked free. Twenty-one years later, in 2018, Alena Grlakova, a 38-year-old mother of four from Slovakia, vanished from Rotherham. Her body was found months later in a nearby stream, strangled and discarded just like Samantha had been. What followed was one of the most elaborate undercover police operations in British history, a two-year deep-cover sting involving seven officers building a fake criminal world around one man. Gary Allen's own mouth finally did what twenty-four years of investigations couldn't. This is a story about what happens when the system sees a monster coming from miles away and still can't stop him in time, and about two women whose families never stopped waiting for answers.

In October 1997, ten-year-old Joel Kirkpatrick was stabbed to death in his bed in Lawrenceville, Illinois, in a homicide investigation that would expose the catastrophic consequences of tunnel vision policing, junk forensic science, and the weight a single courtroom assumption can carry. His mother, Julie Rea, a PhD student in educational psychology, was convicted and sentenced to 65 years in prison despite no physical evidence connecting her to her son's death.
What followed was nearly a decade of wrongful imprisonment, a true crime author who happened to catch the right television segment at the right moment, and a serial killer sitting on death row in Texas who turned out to be the only person willing to tell the truth. This case has a custody battle weaponized as motive, a nomadic predator with a body count stretching across the country, and a confession that cracked open a case the state of Illinois had tried to seal forever. Joel deserved better. So did his mom. And the way justice finally arrived for this family is one of the most remarkable stories you will ever hear.

On January 3, 2022, first responders entered a home in Slaughter, Louisiana, and discovered 36-year-old Lacey Fletcher deceased, the victim of years of catastrophic neglect committed by her parents, Sheila and Clay Fletcher. The investigation resulted in second-degree murder charges, a surprising plea deal, and a sentencing that ignited national outrage about vulnerable adult protections, caregiver accountability, and the failures of community oversight. What makes this case almost impossible to process is that Sheila Fletcher was a town alderman and court clerk, someone literally employed to uphold justice, while her daughter was vanishing in the next room. This is the story of how a family's obsession with reputation can override every human instinct, how a tight-knit community can look the other way for fifteen years, and how a woman who once played high school volleyball ended up merging with a piece of furniture. This one is going to stay with you.

In the summer of 1973, serial killer Robert Garrow launched an 18-day murder spree through New York's Adirondack wilderness, triggering the largest manhunt in state history and leaving investigators with a map marked with 26 red dots and far too few answers. The homicide investigation surrounding victims Alicia Hauck, Daniel Porter, Susan Petz, and Philip Domblewski eventually led to a courtroom revelation that cracked American legal ethics wide open. Two defense attorneys knew where the bodies were buried and said nothing for five months, while grieving families begged publicly for any information at all. This is a story about a man forged in poverty and institutional failure, a wilderness that became his hunting ground, and the impossible weight of a professional oath when honoring it means doing something that feels profoundly wrong as a human being.

In December 2009, Jamie Carroll, a 37-year-old master hair stylist from Louisville, Kentucky, disappeared after a night of drugs and sex at a Victorian mansion on Fourth Street in Old Louisville. His body wouldn't be discovered for six months, sealed in a 50-gallon container and buried five feet beneath the basement floor. The investigation exposed a complex homicide case involving methamphetamine addiction, a sophisticated counterfeiting operation, and two men who each claimed the other was the killer. Federal agencies including the Secret Service and CIA became involved after discovering nearly a million files on seized hard drives, adding layers of mystery to an already disturbing case. Jeffrey Mundt and Joseph Banis turned on each other in separate trials, creating a legal battle where each defendant's primary evidence was the testimony of his accomplice.
This case gets weird fast. Two men, one victim, a basement grave that stayed hidden for half a year, and federal agents who still won't explain what they found on those computers. Sometimes the truth doesn't set you free. Sometimes it just raises more questions.

On January 30, 2024, 68-year-old Michael Mohn, a civil engineer with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, was shot and beheaded in his Levittown, Pennsylvania home by his 33-year-old son Justin Mohn. The murder investigation revealed forensic evidence including a Sig Sauer 9mm pistol purchased 24 hours before the killing, a notebook containing detailed plans labeled "Boom" and "Slice," and online search history going back at least five years showing research on handgun purchases, bullet penetration of skulls, and explosive-making instructions. Justin then uploaded a 14-minute YouTube video titled "Mohn's Militia - Call to Arms for American Patriots" where he held up his father's severed head twice, declared himself "Acting President," leaked a federal judge's home address, and called for the execution of all federal employees.
Justin Mohn became the first person ever convicted under Pennsylvania's terrorism statute. His years-long radicalization into right-wing extremism involved four failed lawsuits against the Department of Education over student loans, self-published manifestos calling for government overthrow, and research on domestic terrorist Timothy McVeigh. After the killing, he drove 100 miles to a National Guard base carrying explosive recipes on a USB drive, believing soldiers would join his revolution. In July 2025, he received two consecutive life sentences without parole. Prosecutors revealed his online history showed he'd been planning violence for at least five years.

In May 2022, Orono police discovered six-year-old Eli Hart's body in the trunk of his mother Julissa Thaler's vehicle during a routine traffic stop in Minnesota. The investigation revealed Thaler had shot Eli up to nine times with a 12-gauge shotgun just ten days after regaining full custody. Evidence included the weapon purchase six days after the father filed for custody, Google searches about child blood loss and life insurance payouts, and ammunition specifically requested to "blow the biggest hole." Despite 21 police calls to Thaler's home, documented mental health crises, and explicit warnings from family members that she would kill Eli rather than lose custody, Dakota County Social Services recommended returning the child to her care.
Eli was a kindergartener who loved the monkey bars, fishing with his dad, and making friends at school. Despite being born with medical challenges that required surgeries and hearing aids, everyone said he was one of the happiest kids they'd ever met. His foster mother told social workers directly that she believed Thaler would murder Eli to keep him from his father. Two weeks after getting full custody, that's exactly what happened.

In June 1963, NAACP field secretary Medgar Evers was shot in the back outside his Jackson, Mississippi home by white supremacist Byron De La Beckwith. The assassination triggered a 31-year investigation involving forensic evidence, FBI fingerprint analysis, two hung jury trials, and shocking interference by Mississippi's governor and a state-funded spy agency called the Sovereignty Commission that actively worked to protect the suspect from conviction.
While Medgar was bleeding out in his driveway at 12:30 in the morning, his wife and children heard him trying to reach their door. Two trials in the 1960s ended without convictions, even though Beckwith's fingerprint was on the murder weapon. And right now in February 2026, the National Park Service has temporarily pulled visitor brochures from the Medgar Evers National Monument because of plans to remove words like "racist" when describing his convicted killer. This is a story about how justice can be delayed for decades, and how the fight to tell the truth about what happened continues even today.

In May 1985, seventeen-year-old Shari Faye Smith was abducted from her family's driveway in broad daylight near Lexington, South Carolina, sparking one of the most intensive FBI investigations in the region's history. The perpetrator, Larry Gene Bell, tortured Shari's family with phone calls for days before killing nine-year-old Debra May Helmick two weeks later, turning the Midlands into a landscape of fear during what became known as the "Summer of Terror."
This case has everything that makes true crime both fascinating and deeply unsettling. Bell didn't stop after killing these girls. He played a sick game with their families, making phone calls where he'd describe what he'd done, all while using voice-altering technology like some bargain-basement supervillain. And here's what really gets me about this story: the breakthrough that caught him came from handwriting indentations on a legal pad. Sometimes the smallest detail is the one that brings a monster down. Plus, there's a 2025 update that confirms Bell had been hunting victims for a full decade before anyone connected the dots.

In May 1970, National Guardsmen fired 67 rounds in thirteen seconds at Kent State University students protesting the Vietnam War's expansion into Cambodia, killing Allison Krause, Jeffrey Miller, Sandra Scheuer, and William Schroeder, and wounding nine others. The FBI investigation, civil trials, and forensic analysis of audio evidence would span decades, with questions about whether guardsmen received an order to fire remaining central to the case.
Four days. That's all it took for a college campus in Ohio to go from burying a copy of the Constitution as a symbolic protest to actual students bleeding out on the grass. And here's what makes this case so disturbing: for forty years, everyone involved said no order was given to shoot. Then in 2010, a forensic audio expert cleaned up a forgotten tape recording and found something that changed everything about what we thought we knew.

In 1972, Herbert Mullin murdered thirteen people across Santa Cruz, California, during a six-month killing spree that terrorized the community already known as the "Murder Capital of the World." The homicide investigation revealed victims ranging from a hitchhiking college student to a Catholic priest killed inside a confessional booth, with forensic evidence and detective work eventually connecting the seemingly random murders to one disturbed killer whose conviction would hinge on whether his paranoid schizophrenia diagnosis proved legal insanity.
Herb Mullin genuinely believed he was saving California from sliding into the Pacific Ocean. He wasn't hunting for power or sexual gratification. He was a former high school golden boy, voted Most Likely to Succeed, who had his brain completely shatter after his best friend died in a car crash. He thought if he could get thirteen people to telepathically agree to die, their blood would keep the San Andreas Fault from ripping the state in half. The mental health system saw him deteriorating in real time and still couldn't prevent what was coming.

In November 1999, Charlotte real estate agent Cherica Adams was shot four times in an ambush on Rea Road orchestrated by her boyfriend, Carolina Panthers wide receiver Rae Carruth, who faced mounting child support obligations and refused to accept her pregnancy. The investigation revealed a murder-for-hire conspiracy involving career criminal Van Brett Watkins, drug dealer Michael Kennedy, and Stanley Abraham, with forensic evidence including Adams' 12-minute 911 call and handwritten hospital notes identifying Carruth before her death 28 days later. This is the story of a first-round NFL draft pick who recruited criminals from Charlotte's underworld to eliminate the mother of his unborn child, a woman who spent her final moments ensuring her son would survive and her killer would be identified. We're talking about a movie date that ended in gunfire, a grandmother's forgiveness that defies understanding, and a boy born into trauma who became living proof that some miracles happen in the darkest moments.

In January 2000, Baltimore Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis and two friends were charged with the murders of Jacinth Baker and Richard Lollar outside an Atlanta nightclub during Super Bowl weekend. The investigation revealed tactical knives purchased days before, a missing blood-soaked suit, destroyed photographs, and a code of silence that nearly derailed the entire case. What started as a champagne bottle to the head ended with two young men from Akron bleeding out on a Buckhead street, while one of football's biggest stars faced life in prison. The trial exposed deep fractures in witness testimony, questionable police tactics, and a self-defense claim that would shock the nation when the jury delivered its verdict after just five hours of deliberation.

There's something deeply unsettling about a killer who looks like everyone else. Steven Brian Pennell was a married electrician with two kids, the guy who'd wave to you from his driveway while mowing the lawn. Between 1987 and 1988, he turned a stretch of highway in Delaware into his own personal nightmare factory. Route 40 became a place where women disappeared into a blue van and were found days later showing signs of torture that would make seasoned homicide detectives need a minute. This is the story of how a female undercover cop stared into the eyes of a predator, how cutting-edge forensic science caught up with evil, and how a killer demanded his own execution while quoting the Bible and refusing to reveal where he'd hidden his final victim's body.

In March 2019, rapper and community leader Nipsey Hussle was shot and killed outside his Marathon Clothing store at the intersection of Crenshaw and Slauson in South Los Angeles. The murder investigation revealed that Eric Holder Jr., a fellow Rollin' 60s Crips member, fired over ten shots at Hussle following a brief conversation about street rumors. The homicide trial of Eric Holder Jr. resulted in a first-degree murder conviction and a sentence of 60 years to life in prison.
So here's what makes this case absolutely devastating. Nipsey wasn't killed by a rival gang or some random street violence. He was murdered by someone from his own set, someone he'd known for years, right in front of the store he built to save his neighborhood. This is the story of two men who came from the exact same streets, grew up in the same gang, but took completely different paths. One became a visionary who met with LAPD to discuss peace. The other struggled with untreated schizophrenia and got stuck in a cycle he couldn't escape. What happened in that parking lot on March 31st wasn't some elaborate conspiracy. It was something way more tragic and way more preventable.

Wade Allen strangled and dismembered his girlfriend Kelly Jean Warner in May 2019 in Sturgis, Michigan. Police discovered her mutilated remains stored in two coolers inside Allen's apartment after an anonymous tip. The 39-year-old pleaded no contest to second-degree homicide, attempted dismemberment, and attempted third-degree criminal sexual conduct. While incarcerated at St. Joseph County Jail, Allen sexually assaulted a cellmate who had reported his murder confession to authorities. A judge sentenced Allen to 39-60 years for murder with consecutive sentences for assault, effectively ensuring he'll likely die in prison.
This is the story of a woman whose transient lifestyle made her disappearance almost invisible, and a man whose brain might have been wired for violence. Kelly Jean Warner, 43, lived a life that didn't fit neatly into society's boxes. When she vanished in spring 2019, there were no immediate alarm bells because people like Kelly sometimes go weeks without contact. That silence became her killer's greatest advantage. But her sister Lisa refused to let Kelly disappear quietly, and that persistence helped crack open one of the most disturbing murder cases in Michigan's recent history. We're going to talk about what happens when someone's lifestyle makes them vulnerable, when a psychopath moves through a small town undetected, and how a catastrophic failure in the jail system allowed a murderer to victimize someone all over again.

Mary Crocker murder case in Guyton, Georgia, where a 14-year-old girl was found buried in her backyard on December 20, 2018, alongside her brother Elwyn Crocker Jr. The homicide investigation revealed systematic torture, starvation, and child abuse by their father Elwyn Crocker Sr., stepmother Candice Crocker, and three other adults in Effingham County. This death penalty case exposed catastrophic failures in Georgia's Division of Family and Children Services, where reports of child cruelty were ignored while two children vanished from school records under the guise of homeschooling.
What happens when the man playing Santa Claus at your local Walmart has two dead children buried in his backyard? This case out of Effingham County, Georgia will absolutely wreck you. We're talking about a house where five adults created their own version of hell for two kids who had nowhere to run. Mary Crocker died right around her fourteenth birthday. Her brother had already been in the ground for two years. The family tree connects back to serial killer Donald "Pee Wee" Gaskins, and there's this horrifying pattern of violence that nobody stopped. We've got dog cages in the kitchen, forced starvation while the adults ate normally, and a child welfare system that literally dismissed abuse reports as "too old" to investigate. The surviving brother has cerebral palsy and was allegedly kept alive only because he brought in disability checks. This one stays with you.

In May 1936, Tokyo geisha Sada Abe murdered her lover Kichizo Ishida through strangulation, then severed his genitals in what became Japan's most notorious crime of the Showa era. The homicide investigation revealed a twisted love affair between a former sex worker and a married restaurant owner that ended in mutilation, carving bloody inscriptions, and a three-day manhunt through Tokyo. Detectives found Abe carrying the severed body parts in her kimono, treating them like sacred relics.
This case goes way beyond tabloid shock value. You've got a woman who survived sexual trauma, disease, and the brutal exploitation of Japan's pleasure districts in the 1930s. She found something that felt like real connection, then decided if she couldn't keep it alive, she'd preserve it in the most horrifying way imaginable. The aftermath is equally wild: she walked free after just a few years, became a stage celebrity playing herself in theater productions, and later ran a bar where people lined up to be served by the woman who committed one of history's most intimate murders.

Gregory Biggs, a 37-year-old homeless man and former bricklayer, was struck by a car on Highway 287 in Fort Worth, Texas in the early morning hours of October 26, 2001. The driver, Chante Mallard, a 25-year-old certified nursing assistant, drove home with Biggs lodged in her windshield and left him to die in her garage. The homicide investigation led detectives through a shocking cover-up involving body disposal at Cobb Park and evidence tampering. Mallard was convicted of murder in 2003 and sentenced to 50 years in prison.
This is the story of a collision that should have been a tragedy but became something far worse. Gregory Biggs didn't die on impact. He died slowly, bleeding out in a stranger's garage while she debated what to do about the inconvenience of a dying man trapped in her car. The medical examiner testified he could have survived if she'd made one phone call. This case forces you to ask how someone trained to save lives could sit in her garage, apologize to a dying stranger, and then walk away to let him bleed to death. The answer involves drugs, panic, and a series of choices that turned an accident into one of the most disturbing murders in Texas history.

Sylvie Cachay was a 33-year-old Peruvian-American fashion designer found dead in a bathtub at New York City's Soho House on December 9, 2010. The homicide investigation revealed Nicholas Brooks, her 24-year-old boyfriend, strangled and drowned the swimwear designer in what prosecutors called a staged crime scene. The murder trial in 2013 exposed intimate partner violence, financial exploitation, and a twisted family legacy involving Brooks's father, Academy Award-winning composer Joseph Brooks, who was awaiting trial for sexually assaulting 11 women
This is the story of a woman who survived the 2008 financial crash and was rebuilding her fashion empire when she met a trust fund kid with no job, no ambition, and a family tree rotting from the inside out. Sylvie was days away from cutting him off completely when everything went wrong in a flooded hotel room. The forensic evidence tells a story of violence that couldn't be hidden by running water and prescription pills. This case has everything: a fire that might not have been an accident, a seven-minute window that destroyed an alibi, and a turtleneck sweater that became the most damning piece of evidence in a Manhattan courtroom.

James Eagan Holmes murdered twelve people and injured seventy others during the midnight premiere of The Dark Knight Rises at a Colorado movie theater on July 20, 2012. The Aurora theater shooting investigation revealed a University of Colorado neuroscience PhD candidate who meticulously planned a mass shooting while simultaneously rigging his apartment with homemade napalm and thermite explosives designed to kill first responders. Holmes bought his arsenal the same afternoon he failed his doctoral exams, then spent weeks building what the FBI called a "jungle gym of booby traps" in his apartment.
The headlines about the "Joker killer" completely missed the real horror. Holmes developed something he called the "Human Capital" theory, a twisted philosophical framework where he believed killing people would transfer their value to him. He'd been hallucinating violent shadows fighting each other since childhood, saw things he called "Nail Ghosts," and told his girlfriend months before the shooting that he wanted to "kill people, of course." She thought he was joking. His psychiatrist knew he thought about homicide three to four times a day, but couldn't legally hold him. And when three young men heard gunfire in that darkened theater, they all made the same split-second decision to use their bodies as shields, saving the women they loved while dying in the process.

In August 2010, Elias Abuelazam was arrested at Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson Airport while attempting to flee to Israel after a brutal stabbing spree that terrorized Flint, Michigan. The serial killer murdered at least five men and attacked nine others across Michigan, Virginia, and Ohio between May and August 2010, targeting primarily African American men in what became known as the Flint Serial Slasher case. Arnold Minor, a 49-year-old handyman, became a key murder victim when investigators found his blood on Abuelazam's steering wheel and clothing.
This is the story of a predator who weaponized kindness. Elias Abuelazam drove through the struggling streets of Flint in his green Chevy TrailBlazer, pretending he needed help with directions or car trouble. When Good Samaritans approached his window, he stabbed them and drove away. Five families lost someone they loved. Nine survivors carry physical and emotional scars that will never fully heal. The case connects to an earlier unsolved murder in Virginia and a violent assault in Israel, painting a picture of escalating violence that spanned continents. We'll walk through the investigation that finally caught him, the controversial insanity defense that failed, and the decision to suspend additional trials that left many families without full closure.

On August 2, 2018, ten-month-old Mary Anne Welch died of starvation in Solon Township, Michigan. Her parents, Seth Welch and Tatiana Fusari, were convicted of felony murder and first-degree child abuse after investigators discovered the infant weighed only eight pounds at death. The homicide investigation revealed a disturbing pattern of deliberate medical neglect, religious extremism, and a 90-minute delay before calling 911 while Seth consulted his lawyer.
This is the story of a baby who starved to death in plain sight. Seth Welch believed in "natural selection" and called doctors the "priesthood of the medical cult." He recorded videos explaining why weak children should die off. Tatiana worked at McDonald's but claimed she was too terrified of her husband to seek help. Their farmhouse was covered in religious signs warning the world to stay away, while inside, Mary Anne's body slowly consumed itself trying to survive. When Seth finally called 911, he told the dispatcher his daughter was "dead as a doornail" and admitted he'd called his attorney first. The autopsy revealed she'd been starving for months. The question isn't whether they killed her. It's how they justified watching it happen.

Jack Harrison Trawick murdered Stephanie Gach in Birmingham, Alabama in 1992 after abducting the 21-year-old college student from her apartment complex parking lot. The homicide investigation revealed Trawick had killed at least three women, including 17-year-old Betty Jo Richards in 1972 and 26-year-old Aileen Pruitt earlier in 1992. Forensic evidence from his white Toyota van, including fiber analysis and luminol-detected blood traces, led to his conviction and death sentence. Trawick had been diagnosed as a paranoid schizophrenic with homicidal impulses in 1970, yet remained free to kill for decades.
This is the story of a killer who described murder as a physical addiction, a man who walked Birmingham's streets for twenty years between his first kill and his capture. Trawick didn't fade into obscurity after his arrest. From death row, he launched a psychological warfare campaign against his victims' families through a murderabilia website, forcing grieving mothers to relive their nightmares. The case exposed massive failures in the mental health system and sparked a legislative battle that changed how we think about criminals profiting from their crimes.

In November 1973, Douglas Gretzler and Willie Steelman murdered nine people in Victor, California, including the Parkin family and their neighbors. The homicide investigation revealed a brutal massacre where victims Walter Parkin, Joanne Parkin, their children Lisa and Robert, Richard and Wanda Earl, their children Debbie and Ricky, and Mark Lang were systematically executed in their own home. This killing spree began in Arizona with multiple murders across the Southwest, totaling seventeen victims. The suspects used eyewitness elimination as their primary motive, leaving a trail of bodies from Phoenix to Sacramento before their arrest at the Clunie Hotel.
Two drifters walked into a family home during a bowling night and turned it into the crime scene that would haunt a tiny California town forever. After shooting nine people, including two children, the killers sat down in the kitchen and ate birthday cake. This is the story of how a depressed kid from the Bronx and a brain-damaged ex-con from California formed one of the deadliest partnerships in American criminal history, racking up seventeen bodies in less than a month while crisscrossing the Southwest like their personal hunting ground.
