- 753 - Paul Wortselings Best Of Australian Fishing
I had the opportunity to sit down with high profile Aussie fisho Paul Wortseling and chat about his favourite Australian fishing destinations. There are few among us who have fished as many places as Paul, so this was always going to be a facinating conversation. I wasn't disappointed.
For me, there were two standouts in this interview. The first was that it reiterated and solidified my view that Australia is truly one of the worlds premium fishing destinations. The second is Paul's appreciation and gratitude for the experiences he's had and his call to action for Aussie anglers to chase their fishing dreams.
I hope this episode inspires you to to identify your fishing dreams and make them happen!

Wed, 27 Mar 2024 - 50min - 748 - Best Times To Fish (No Run = No Fun) With Greg Vinall
Obviously, the best time to go fishing is anytime you can get out on the water.
But we all know that certain conditions tend to be more productive for lure fishos than others. And a common rule of thumb in fishing circles is: "If there's no run, there's no fun".
Now, it's always a bit dodgy to take a single idea like this and apply it to all forms of fishing and all species of fish. So today we're exploring whether the "no run = no fun" rule fits every situation, and if so, how and why.
After all, the more we understand about how fish respond to their environment the better we'll become at predicting their movements and behviours.

Topwater flathead fishing has never been so brutal! In today's interview with Russell Babekuhl we discover a whole new side to the humble flathead that few people know exists. It's a style of shallow water, hand to fin combat where oversized crocs obliterate topwater lures and use their might to smoke the angler in oyster covered structure. The stories are more like what I expect from yellowtail kingfish or trevally fishos than those who target flathead. It's inspiring stuff!

King George whiting are a popular target with bait fishers, but I'm not sure why they're not targeted more by lure fishers. They're the largest of our whiting and are more than capable of eating a small, well presented soft plastic lure.

Tue, 07 Nov 2023 - 49min - 727 - Lakefield Barramundi With Luke Galea
Looking for a remote barra fishing adventure? Look no further! Cape York's Lakefield National Park is a barramundi fishing wonderland with a myriad of interconnected streams and wetlands during the wet season that recede into numerous isolated pools and billabongs during the dry season. The result is a system that's diverse and holds numerous barra that can be targeted either land-based, or by launching a small tinnie where access permits. Luke Galea recently fished Lakefield land-based and came back to the ALF podcast to share his experience with our listeners.

Mon, 06 Nov 2023 - 43min - 726 - Understanding Tonic Sunglasses With Doug Phillips
A good pair of polasrised sunglasses is almost as important as a rod and reel, especially if you're in a high-glare situation like coral flats, bluewater, whit sandy beaches or...... let's face it just about any situation. Apart from protecting your eyes from UV, quality sunglasses enhance your comfort and enjoyment of time spent fishing.
It's no secret that after wearing numerous sunglass brands over the years I have fallen in love with Tonic sunglasses. For me, they're at the top end of quality without the high price ticket. So today I've brought Tonic Director Doug Phillips onto the podcast to talk about eyewear for anglers generally, but the Tonic offering in particular.

Thu, 19 Oct 2023 - 56min - 725 - Fishing Through The Lens OF SCF Creative Bonnie Cheung
Today, October 14, 2023 marks the opening of the second Topwater Film International, an extraordinary event run by SCF Australia to celebrate the best video content creators in the Australian Fishing landscape. Teams had 2 weeks to shoot, edit and upload an amazing fishing video for the chance to win cash prizes to further their creative escapades. The films are only viewable for 14 days, starting today, after that they're gone forever - so get the TFI app (links below) and vote for your favourite film TODAY.
SCF Australia has been supporting creators, promoting sustainability in recreational fishing and building a vibrant and high energy community for some years, but of course an event of this magnitude takes a well-oiled team to pull off. So today we're talking to one of SCF's team memebers, Bonnie Cheung, who came to an event as a non-fishing photographer a few years ago and quickly got swept up in the energy and enthusiasm of the SCF community. These day's she's not just a full time content creator for SCF (her dream job), but is also a passionate fisho!

Fri, 13 Oct 2023 - 22min - 724 - Topwater Film Invitational 2023: Girls Gone Wild With Kristin Goodchild
The inaugural Topwater Film Invitational (TFI) competition run in 2022 by SCF Australia was a massive, runaway success - and the signs indicate that the 2023 event will eclipse the first one.
For those unfamiliar with TFI, small teams of high profile fishing content creators get invited to create a 20 minute film showcasing the best that topwater fishing has to offer. The teams get the same 2 week window to film, edit and upload their videos, which air in Gold Class cinemas on release and are then viewable for two weeks on the TFI app. After that, the videos are taken down, never to be seen again. The teams compete for cash and prizes and the winners are determined by a poll of those who view the videos. Sound insane and chaotic? It 100% is.
To give us a little glimpse behind the scenes at TFI today's interview is with Kristin "Goody" Goodchild of the "Girls Gone Wild" team - the first all-womens team to compete in TFI. Enjoy!

Keen to target Georges River jewfish on lures? This episode has been a long time coming, but was definitely worth the wait. My guest today is Matt Poulos, a gentleman who has lived and fished on the Georges River for his whole life. At certain times of year when the water warms and the prawns start wandering the humble whiting can become a very entertaining target for those who like to throw small surface lures. Starlo was one of those at the forefront in the heyday of the topwater whiting revlution but even today enjoys the opportunity to chase a few of the little silver fish in clear, shallow water. In today's episode Starlo shares not only some tips for catching whiting, but his observations of trends in the fishery over many years.

Tue, 03 Oct 2023 - 55min - 721 - Conquering the Trout of Southern New South Wales' Streams
Wayne "Mr Freshwater" Dubois has been my guest on the ALF podcast a number of times now and always has a ton of great information to share with ALF listeners. With this episode coinciding with the opening of the 2023-24 trout season, who better than Wayne to enlighten us on tacle and tactics for targeting mountain stream and lowland river trout on lures? Spring is a peak period for trout fishers because the fish have finished spawning and are feeding hard t condition back up. Oxygen rich, cold water fed by snowmelt creates the perfect conditions for these fish too, so expect aggression when the fish take lures and plenty of action once the hooks sink home!

For Gold Coast flathead enthusiasts the cooler months produce large numbers of smaller "school" flathead. But the onset of the spring months marks the arrival of the larger fish in good numbers. No coincidence then, that the Gold Coast Flathead Classic fishing tournament is held in late September each year!
Today's ALF podcast guest is Guy McConnell, a Jacobs Well local who fishes for all manner of species throughout the Gold Coast area, but has a particular affinity (and a knack for catching) quality dusky flathead. This is an info packed episode for anyone fishing this year's Flathead Classic, but also for those planning of targeting flathead on the Gold Coast over the next few months.

Mon, 25 Sep 2023 - 44min - 718 - Wet Tropics Springtime Barra With Brodie Quaas
For those in the know, the rivers and estuaries of Far North Queenslands Wet Tropics Region can fish pretty well all year round for a range of species, including the iconic barramundi. In fact, some stonking barra turn up during the cooler, drier months of winter and into the spring months leading to the annual season closure. Throughout 2023, Cairns barramundi fishing guide Brodie Quaas has had a brilliant dry season, guiding a lot of clients onto some very decent barra. But as the weather and the water warms he knows that the habits and behaviours of the big saltwater barra begin to change too.
In today's ALF episode Brodie shares how he targets the fish through the transition from dry to wet season, whether it's in the headwaters of the river systems or further down in the tidal reaches. Tons of great tips and guide secrets in this interview!

Wed, 13 Sep 2023 - 58min - 717 - Mastering Topwater Whiting Fishing With Lures: Luke Galea
For those living in cenral Queensland the list of lure fishing species is very extensive, with tons of large, iconic sporting and eating species available in the river, estuaries and coastal areas. Little wonder that bread-and-butter species like the humble whiting are often overlooked in the rush for more glamorous targets. It's a shame, because whiting are super accessible for shore based anglers, plentiful around the northern coastline, fun to catch and pretty good on the table too. So in today's ALF episode Mackay gun Luke Galea shares what he's learned about chasing whiting (and a bycatch of flathead) in his local estuaries using light tackle and topwater lures.

Thu, 07 Sep 2023 - 12min - 715 - Two behaviours of fish that every angler should understand with Greg Vinall
Why is it that some fish can be attracted to a lure, whilst others are afraid of it? Why is it essential to be stealthy in some situations, but other times being noisy will result in more fish being caught? And how can looking at human behaviour shed some light on the way fish behave? The answers (and a whole bunch more questions) can be found in today's ALF episode. Host Greg Vinall explores neophobic and neophilic behaviours in fish and how they affect a thinking anglers strategies.

Today's ALF episode comes by popular request.... I've had so many listeners hit me up for a "Five Best Fishing Spots" style interview focussing on the Sydney area that I knewI had to find a quality guest to cover this subject.
Luke Kay has been on the ALF podcast previously, when he talked to Deathy about Sydney bream fishing. So he was the perfect candidate for today's interview and gave a very goodaccount of some top fishing opportunities all around the Sydney area.

Fingermark are an amazing sportfish. Like all Lutjanids (tropical snappers), they're extremely tough fighters that give an amazing account of themselves once hooked. They're also spectacular looking and pretty good on the table, if you want to take one or two for a feed. The trouble with fingermark is their transience and unpredictability. Fortunately Port Douglas angler Isaac Fenech has been targeting them hard in that part of the world for 6-7 years now and has some insights that will help others find, and catch, more fingermark.

Tue, 11 Jul 2023 - 54min - 710 - Episode 630: Secrets To Fishing Lake Macquarie In Winter With Dan Guilfoyle
Like humans, fish can behave a little differently during the winter months than they do when the water is a little warmer. And that means the structure, locations and techniques that connected you with fish during summer will be far less effective when the weather cools and the days get shorter. Plus, in places like Lake Macquarie there can be a changing of the guard. Some species that aren't so common during summer can turn up in winter, or you might find that better quality specimens appear. And other species that frequent the system in summer might move on..... although Lake Mac has a couple of tricks up it's sleeve in this regard.

Tue, 20 Jun 2023 - 26min - 706 - Episode 626: Advances In Deep Slow Pitch Jigging With Jim Potts
One of my favourite things on the ALF podcast is when I get the chance to chat with top notch anglers who are really pushing the boundaries in terms of what today's tackle and techniques can acheive. These are the folks who move fishing in new directions and force the development of new tackle and new techniques to catch otherwise uncatchable fish. Jim Potts is one of those anglers. He's been on the ALF podcast a number of times and his interviews stir not only the imagination, but plenty of conversation. They're always popular. And since I hadn't interviewed Jim in quite a long while I thought it was timely to catch up at the start of the deep jigging season to find out how this facinating aspect of fishing had developed since we last spoke.

Thu, 15 Jun 2023 - 41min - 704 - Episode 623: Sydney Kingfish With Justin Duggan
How lucky are Australian anglers? Our largest city, home to around 20% of our entire population is built around not one, but two fishing playgrounds. We're going to focus on Sydney Harbour today with our guest Justin Duggan - and we're going to learn how to target those frustrating kingfish (and other pelagics) at times when they are smashing bait along the shoreline. Frustrating why? Because they can be turning the shoreline to foam as they bust up on small bait like jelly prawns and anchovies. But despite being visible, exciting and active, they can be very difficult to convince to take a lure. Fortunately, Justin will share the techniques and tackle that can change your fortunes!

Tue, 06 Jun 2023 - 1h 16min - 703 - Episode 622: Melbourne Bluefin Tuna On Poppers With Lee Rayner
The continued resurence of the Bluefin Tuna fishery around southern Australia is creating spectacular results for those using traditional tuna fishing techniques. But with fish available in good numbers it creates the opportunity to explore less conventional (and maybe more fun) techniques. Over recent years it's become quite common to stop the boat and cast lures at feeding tuna, usually a stickbait or a diving minnow style lure. Jason is an undisputed master of impoundment barramundi fishing. His persistence, determination and commitment made him one of the early pioneers of winter impoundment barra fishing. Chasing a few squid using prawn-style jigs should be on every fisho's agenda at some stage, I reckon. Ok, they won't pull you off your feet like a GT or smash a lure off the surface like a big cod (or not often, at least). But squid have a big brain and they're far smarter than any fish. Plus they are one of the most sustainable fishing species we have and a great source of super tasty, healthy protein. So today we're taking a little deeper look into the mysterious an comples world of Australia's most popular recreational squid species...... arrow squid, southern calamari and northern calamari.

Fri, 12 May 2023 - 19min - 692 - Ballina Headlands Jewfish Fishing On Lures: Tristan Sloan
Small jewfish can be targeted all year round from the rocks and headlands of the northern NSW coast, but in Autumn the mullet runs bring the bigger (10-25kg) size class of jewfish close to shore to feed on the prolific food supply. The weeks and months following Anzac Day are the prime time to dust off the jewfish tackle and hits the rocks and headlands in search of jewies.
Tristan Sloan grew up in the Ballina area and learned to catch jewfish from the rocks and rock walls at a young age. He's recently returned after a number of years in Northern Ausralia and found that his knowledge and past experience have allowed him to step straight back into consistently catching headland jewfish on lures.

Sun, 23 Apr 2023 - 52min - 683 - Episode 604: The Myths Of Lure Vs Bait Fishing With Greg Vinall
There seems to be a growing snobbery around the topic of lure fishing vs bait fishing. Yep, I gravitate toward lure fishing, but surely there is room for both.
I'm not sure exactly why that is, but some of the commentary would suggest that elements of the lure fishing fraternity see bait fishing as being an "easy" way to catch fish. And by inference, lure fishing must therefore require more skill and those who catch fish on lures must be better anglers.
I'd argue that bait fishing is easier for beginners to get results, and perhaps there is a greater possibility of "fluking" the occassional trophy fish on bait than on lures (maybe). But in many ways it's easier to catch larger numbers of fish on lures and often better quality fish, too.
So when the question comes up "why would you fish with lures when you could catch more fish with bait?" I guess the answer has to be "the same reason you fish with bait when you could catch more fish on lures!

Thu, 06 Apr 2023 - 41min - 682 - Episode 606: Land-based Lure Fishing Makay With Luke Galea
Today's ALF episode is great news for the tens of thousands of anglers across Australia's north who don't own a boat and would love a better land-based fishing experience.
Central Queensland sponsored angler, fishing writer and YouTuber Luke Galea spends a lot of time fishing from the shore, despite having both a boat and a kayak to fish from. He finds that shore based fishing allows him to take advantage of opportunities to wet a line that he couldn't use if he was restricted to boat fishing.
Knowing how and where to fish from the shore enables Luke to make a quick stop on the way home from work to chase bread and butter species like bream, whiting and flathead, or target icon fish like barra, jacks, queenfish, GTs, threadfin and more. Windows of as little as 30 minutes aren't work launching a boat for, but the results from shore casting can be very rewarding.

Mon, 03 Apr 2023 - 1h 06min - 681 - Episode 603 (Trailer): Understanding Flathead With Greg Vinall
The humble flathead is an awesome sportfish and a great training ground for anyone wanting to explore lure fishing. Super accessible to most of the Australian population, often a very willing lure taker, gives a good account of itself on light tackle...... and pretty damn good on the chew if you want to take one or two home for a feed. In todays episode I explore a few interesting facts about flathead gleaned from the scentific literature. Understanding how different their vision is from that of other fish species, their use of their highly evolved body shape and the ways to get a lure in front of them and get it seen can help improve your results.

Wed, 08 Mar 2023 - 1h 04min - 676 - Episode 597: Sydney Land Based Kingfish With Steve Collopy And Shroom
Sydney Harbour has to be one of the most heavily pressured, if not THE most heavily pressured waterways in Australia. A mushrooming population, insane boating traffic and highly urbanised catchment inevitably place pressure on a fishery, yet Sydney Harbour continues to be a productive and exciting place to target some great sportfish.
High on the list of desirable species for Sydneysiders is the yellowtail kingfish, and fortunately the stocks of kingfish in the harbour remain sufficient that anglers have a reasonable prospect of tangling with them.
In today's episode Shroom interviews Steve "Scollopy" Collopy, a Sydney local who has been honing his land-based kingfish skills and has some impressive catches on the board.

The upper reaches of the Clarence are one of Australia's great "Wild River" systems and offer some outstanding opportunities for adventurous anglers to experience a wonderful, pristine river system in solitude.
Curtis Parker has been on the ALF podcast three times previously and keeps getting invitations for the quality information he provides our listeners. For the last 20 years he's been doing solo missions into the Clarence, taking several days to traverse a hundred or so kilomtres of river in a canoe. Quality bass and the odd Eastern cod bycatch are the attraction, with bush camping, nightime lure flicking and amazing scenery all part of the deal.
In today's episode Curtis outlines how he plans, prepares and executes these multi-day solo trips into remote river systems. Tons of great tips for anyone who's ever dreamed of doing the same thing!

Sun, 26 Feb 2023 - 55min - 672 - Episode 595: Boat Traffic - What Every Angler Should Know
How much do motor boat noise, wake and other (non-fishing) impacts associated with boating affect fish communities and lure fishing opportunities? Scientific studies show that it can be can be quite a lot. It turns out that the wrong types of boating activities in both general use areas and conservation zones don't just make fish timid while the boats are around. They actually affect the abundance of fish, the diversity of species and the biomass. They change community structure. And whilst fishing may impact on key predatory species, these other activities impact on all fish species and even invertebrates, plus they degrade seagrass habitat, bottom substrate and water quality.

Whether you fish tournaments, would like to fish tournaments or just love recreational bream fishing really doesn't matter! This episode is packed with great tips from a couple of masters. Tournament guys like Grayson work very hard at maximising the results they get, making every minute and every cast count. That means being strategic, knowing your species, understanding their behaviour and having the experience to do what's needed, when it's needed.
These things are essential to be successful in tournaments. But they can help every single lure fisherto improve their results. Sure, you might not go to the extremes if you're just out for a casual fish, but implement even a few of these tips and you'll start to see the results.

The Great Sandy Straits is an extensive network of sandbanks, channels and mangrove-fringed shoreline nestled between Fraser Island and the mainland on Queenslands Fraser Coast. Much has been written about the decline in fisheries in this area, and today's guest Ryan Holdsworth has noticed the impact. However, he reckons the barra, jack and threadfin fisheries are the exception and have held their own, with great sportfishing opportunities on offer in the creeks and shorelines on the western side.
In today's episode Ryan shares his strategies for finding and targeting all three species on lures, working though how to use the tides, the best tackle for the job and the techniques he uses to tempt these species to his lures.

Sun, 19 Feb 2023 - 47min - 669 - [Repost] Ten Fish Indicators Every Angler Should Know With Greg Vinall
This is a repost of an evergreen episode from the ALF 2022 Archive.
In the golden age of marine electronics it can be tempting to get lazy and just head to a waypoint and start sounding around. But the disappearing skill of reading the water and recognising indicators is still vital to the most successful anglers.
Magic happens when anglers use BOTH electronics and environmental indicators.

We're exited to welcome Caitlin Berecry-Brooks to the ALF hosting team and thought we'd take the opportunity ro re-introduce her to our listeners.

When she's not fishing Caitlin works for Fisheries in Victoria on engagement and events management and now finds herself managing the WIRF (Women In Recreational Fishing) program that she'd previously joined as a community leader. She's passionate about encouraging and nurturing women and children into fishing.

Tue, 31 Jan 2023 - 1h 08min - 659 - Episode 584: Trolling for Squid With Greg Lamprecht
Typically when we think about squidding it's all about dropping jigs from pier, casting from the rocks or drifting a weedbed and bouncing a jig as we go. Trolling is not usually part of the equation! But squid can absolutely be targeted by trolling jigs - and the technique enables the angler to cover a lot of ground in search of his or her quarry. Today's guest is Greg Lamprecht, a man who's been at the cutting edge of fishing for a quarter of a century and is probably better known for his offshore exploits. Greg's been getting some pretty good success trolling squid jigs around Moreton Bay, but the techniques he shares in this interview are equally effective anywhere you choose to target squid.

The Top End runoff barra fishery is the stuff of legends and every year attracts enthusiastic barra anglers in droves. And if you're headed north to take advantage of this opportunity you could do far worse than motor out of the mouth of the Mary River system (Sampan Creek) and fish the flats around the coastal creeks during the runout tide. Tristan Sloan has been a fishing writer for many years and has worked extensively in the recreational fishing sector and within Government providing policy advice. He's a super keen fisher and, as you're about to find out a very smart and passionate angler. Today he takes us to one of his favourite runoff fisheries, Chambers Bay.

Sun, 22 Jan 2023 - 19min - 655 - Episode 578: Why Soft Plastic Prawns Trump Real Prawns With Greg Vinall
For those who have fished with bait their whole lives it can be difficult to come to terms with the idea that a soft plastic prawn is not only more fun to fish with than a live bait, but with a little practice will catch more fish and bigger specimens.
In the public edition of this episode I explore why soft plastic prawns leave live prawns in their wake. And in the members version I go on to explain how to choose, rig and work soft plastic prawns to maximum advantage.

Fri, 13 Jan 2023 - 16min - 654 - Episode 579: Weipa Sailfish With Ben Bright
Weipa is definitely a land of opportunity for sportfishers. Barra may well be the first species that comes to mind, or maybe permit, threadfin, fingermark...... there are so many. But unless you've been keeping an eye on this northern destination, billfish may or may not make the list. The Gulf of Carpentaria offers some exceptional opportunities to chase billfish, and sailfish in particular. Weipa sportfishing guide Ben "Notso" Bright is super keen on targeting sails, whether it's with clients or on his days off. He reckons the key is recent intel, meaning the more boats on the water chasing them the more everyone will catch. So as you'd imagine, Notso is more than happy to share some tips!
