A Clare haulier says Transport Infrastructure Ireland are engaging in price gouging through the latest round of announced increases to toll fares. Increases of 20c for vehicles with two and three axels and 30c for those with four or more axels will come into affect from January 1st. Hikes to the fares for both the M50 and Dublin Port Tunnel have also been announced, while regular passenger cars now facing a charge of €2.40 to use toll roads. IRHA Deputy Vice President, Ennis Haulier Eugene Drennan, says toll roads have long since recovered the cost of construction.

Having completed a 14 date UK & European tour with SO Recordings labelmates MY BABY in November and December. He also performed at SXSW in March and was the Special Guest performer at The International Music Industry Person of the Year Award presentation to Jacqueline Saturn (President Virgin Music Group North America) in Los Angeles. Shobsy has also performed numerous sold out shows at prestigious Irish venues over the past year including at Whelan’s, The National Concert Hall and The Academy. He signed an International publishing deal with Pangea Music Publishing (partnered with Sony Music Publishing) and a recording contract with SO Recordings (Big Special, Public Sector Broadcasting, Placebo). 'Dance Or Cry’ (the first release from the recent ‘Own The Night’ EP) reached Number 4 on the Irish Radio Breakers Chart. In July he was one of a handful of Irish acts (alongside Dermot Kennedy & Gavin James) invited to perform at a special Irish Music Industry showcase event hosted by the President of Ireland at the President’s residence in Dublin.

An Ennis choir is getting ready to take centre stage on national television!   The Vocal Ponies are among 12 choirs competing in TG4’s Curfá, which is searching for Ireland’s best choir. The series promises plenty of musical talent, with a €5,000 prize and the chance to perform alongside The Hothouse Flowers up for grabs.   The Vocal Ponies will feature on Sunday, 8th November, at 8pm on TG4.  Joining Alan Morrissey were Gerry Barry and two fellow members of the choir to tell us all about the experience. Tomorrow (Saturday) is Halloween, with children all around Clare looking forward to dressing up in their costumes, undoubtedly looking forward even further to heading out trick or treating!  But how are people celebrating this year, and are old Irish traditions still playing a part in the festivities?   Clare FM’s Ewelina Szybinska went out to find out how people across the county are marking Halloween.  To help get us in a spooky mood, Alan Morrissey has been chatting with the Clare storyteller and filmmaker, Tommy Lanigan, also known as Balor Otherworld.  Tommy shared some Halloween-flavoured stories with us. A new initiative aiming to remove social and financial barriers to dealing with bereavement and grief has been launched by Clare Libraries.    Death Positive Libraries Clare was officially launched today and will see 53 books made available from libraries countywide.    The collection includes 46 texts designed for adults dealing with grief and seven for children, which can be easily identified by a blue butterfly symbol on their spines.    Clare FM's Daragh Dolan was in attendance and began by speaking to Clare's Creative Communities Engagement Officer Eva Birdthistle. Art lovers are in for a treat this November as Inis Artists bring their latest exhibition, Shadows & Light, to the DeValera Library in Ennis from November 3rd to 21st.   Alongside the exhibition, local artists will host a series of free demonstrations, showcasing everything from watercolour and pencil drawing to acrylics and even coffee art!   Joining Alan Morrissey was local artist Alan Shoosmith, who’ll be demonstrating how to create atmospheric skies and clouds using watercolour. County Clare has double the reason to celebrate, with two local women preparing to compete for the Miss Ireland 2026 crown! Lyane Casey, 23, from Kilmaley, is Miss Clare, while 19-year-old Saoirse Keniry from Ennis is Miss Ennis.   Both will take to the stage at the grand final in Dundalk on November 21st, hoping to follow in the footsteps of Clare’s 2022 winner, Ivanna McMahon.   But Miss Ireland is about much more than glamour, celebrating confidence, ambition and charitable work.   Joining Alan Morrissey were Lyane and Saoirse to tell us all about their journey so far. Bishop of Killaloe, Fintan Monahan, has defended the diocese’s use of artificial intelligence to create images of Jesus Christ and the four evangelists for its online ministry.   The AI-generated images have sparked debate about the role of technology in religious life, creativity and how we visualise sacred figures.  Bishop Monahan says AI can be a valuable tool in spreading the Gospel, provided it complements rather than replaces human interaction.   Alan Morrissey spoke with the Bishop of Killaloe, Fintan Monahan earlier this morning. An environmental group is raising concerns that Lahinch's waterways could be impacted if the due diligence process for a new wastewater treatment plant isn't followed. Uisce Éireann is due to carry out Marine and Intertidal site investigation surveys in Liscannor Bay, ahead of its construction of a new sewerage plant serving Ennistymon and Lahinch. Friends of the Irish Environment has requested the Marine Area Regulatory Authority to impose a marine mammal observer, along with sonar, noise and machinery weight restrictions for the duration of the works. Director Tony Lowes says it's critical the waters remain intact.

It's hoped Ennis' Halloween Parade will return in 2027, following the popularity of the inaugural event. Large numbers descended on the county town during the week as ghosts and ghouls made their way through the streets. Those in attendance were treated to a spooky production from performers from Lumen Street Theatre and the Ennis Brass Band. Ennis Chamber President, Margaret O'Brien, says the event was a huge success.

Inagh Kilnamona boss Eugene Cullinan says he'll be looking for players with intercounty experience to lead by example as they get their Munster Club Hurling Championship campaign underway The Combo travel to Páirc Uí Rinn on Sunday afternoon to take on 28-time Cork Champions Glen Rovers in the quarter final. The Tomás Mulcahy led side are spearheaded by four time All-Star Patrick Horgan, alongside Cork stars Eoin and Rob Downey and Micheál Mullins. Cullinan says they've plenty of experienced heads in their squad to match The Glen's firepower.

Thursday's Morning Focus celebrated a new recording with deep roots in the traditional music of County Clare. From Loop to Hook brings brothers John and Séamus McMahon back together, reconnecting with the music, the friendships and the shared experiences that have shaped their lives.  As founder members of the renowned Fisherstreet group, John and Séamus have spent many years immersed in the Clare tradition. On this new album, John brings his distinctive concertina playing, including baritone concertina, while Séamus contributes fiddle, bass fiddle and B♭ flute. More than 90% of Garda Representative Association members who responded to a recent survey have backed industrial action, with a similar proportion prepared to support a work-to-rule during the remaining events of Ireland's EU Presidency.   The GRA accuses Garda management of breaching agreed working conditions, including rest periods and overtime arrangements.   But what would a work-to-rule mean for policing, and is there still time to avert a confrontation?   Alan Morrissey was joined by Clare GRA representative Sean Mullins to learn more. On Thursday's Morning Focus, we heard about a very special four-legged local celebrity: Daisy, the 17-year-old Westie belonging to Clare Champion Managing Director and Motoring Editor, John Galvin.   Daisy has launched her debut 2027 calendar, A Year of Walkies, Adventures and Fun, with every cent of the €10 cover price going to Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind.   With Daisy herself now losing her sight, the cause is particularly close to John and his wife Shelly’s hearts.   Alan Morrissey has been speaking with John – who was accompanied by Daisy and Tom Mernagh, volunteer with Irish Guide Dogs in Clare. Ennis-born actress Kelly Gough is enjoying another busy spell on stage and screen.   This Halloween, she stars as the Morrigan, the formidable figure from Irish mythology, in the supernatural drama The Unreal.   She’s also preparing to take to the stage at London’s Almeida Theatre in a new production of Eugene O’Neill’s classic play Desire Under the Elms, alongside fellow Irish actor Jamie Beamish.   Kelly joined Alan Morrissey to chat about her latest roles, her acting career and her Clare roots. There’s been considerable concern in Clare about the BreastCheck mobile screening unit leaving Ennis on October 30th, with a petition calling for the service to remain in the county or for a permanent screening facility to be established.  While the HSE’s National Screening Service has clarified that the unit operates on a rotating basis and will return, questions remain about access to screening for women who may have to travel outside Clare.   The unit currently based at Áras Contae An Chláir in Ennis has now cleared the bulk of its list and is due to move more than 200 kilometres away to Ballina in Mayo on Friday.  On Wednesday's Morning Focus, Alan Morrissey discussed the issue with Ennis Fine Gael Councillor Mary Howard and Doonbeg Fianna Fáil Councillor Rita McInerney, both members of the HSE’s Regional Health Forum Mid West. This Halloween, a gathering in Ennis will be about more than the usual spooky celebrations.     Kites Not Frights is inviting families and members of the public to come together at the Fairgreen to fly kites and send messages of love and solidarity to children in Gaza.     The event takes place on Halloween (Saturday, 31st October, at 12:30 pm), with all funds raised going directly to the registered charity Children Not Numbers, which supports the health, safety, education and rehabilitation of children affected by conflict.     Eileen Thomas, spokesperson for Kites Not Frights, joined Alan Morrissey to tell us more. An Ennis man who lines out for Clare's senior footballers is also working towards a different kind of goal off the pitch.   Mark McInerney is completing his PhD at the University of Galway, where he is investigating ways to help the body's immune cells find and attack solid tumours, including those associated with colorectal and ovarian cancers.  His research is supported by a scholarship partnership with Breakthrough Cancer Research, whose CEO, Orla Dolan, joins us to discuss the importance of funding innovative cancer research and developing new treatment approaches.  Mark and Orla joined Alan Morrissey to explain how this research works, what it could mean for the future, and the work being carried out here in the west of Ireland. Israel is facing a political deadlock following its first national election since the Hamas-led attacks of 7 October 2023 and the devastating wars that followed. Exit polls suggest that neither Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu nor his main challenger, former military chief Gadi Eisenkot, has secured a clear parliamentary majority.    With the final votes still being counted, Arab political parties could prove decisive in determining who forms the next government. But the political uncertainty comes against a backdrop of immense suffering in Gaza, continuing tensions in the occupied West Bank and the possibility of further regional conflict.    What does this election mean for Israeli democracy, Palestinian rights and the future of the region?    To discuss these questions, Alan Morrissey was joined by Professor Ray Murphy, Human Rights Professor at the University of Galway, and Donnacha O Beacháin, Associate Professor of Politics at DCU’s School of Law and Government, Newmarket-On-Fergus native. Shannon is in line for a major jobs boost following the expansion of a local business. Tredwell Electrical has celebrated 35 years of operations by opening a new 18,000sq ft manufacturing facility in the Shannon Airport Business Park. The company is planning to create 80 engineering jobs over the next three years. Tredwell General Manager Glenn Bain says they're in the right space to grow.

Construction of the Kilkee Flood Relief Scheme will commence in 2028. The €8.5m project is expected to protect 134 properties in the West Clare town. The development is on track to be completed by 2035. Responding to Clare Fine Gael TD Joe Cooney, Minister Kevin 'Boxer' Moran says the plans are progressing smoothly.

Newmarket Celtic will be looking to keep their 100% record in the Moloney Hardware Clare Premier Division intact this weekend. First and third place in the Moloney Hardware Premier Division clash on Sunday morning as the reigning champions travel to take on Ennis Dons. Newmarket have four wins from four to start the campaign, with the Dons coming into the game after a 5-2 defeat to Avenue last time out. Clare FM analyst Jim Madden says they can't afford to dwell on that defeat.

On Atlantic Tales this week Pat Flynn meets staff, past and present, as AirNav Ireland’s North Atlantic Communications Centre at Ballygirreen, in Co. Clare, celebrates it 90th birthday. Since 1936, the centre has ensured the safe passage of millions of aircraft crossing the North Atlantic, cementing Ireland’s critical role as the gateway between Europe and North America.

The Government is considering new measures to make it easier for smaller builders to access finance and develop new homes.   The proposals would allow Home Building Finance Ireland to provide loans to purchase residentially zoned land before planning permission has been secured, potentially removing a significant financial barrier for smaller developers.   But will this lead to more homes being built and help address the housing shortage?   To discuss the proposals, Alan Morrissey was joined by Ennis developer Ciarán Breen of Ciarán Breen Construction. A remarkable piece of Clare history has finally come home, after 127 years in America. A chest belonging to Lissycasey native Denis Melican, who emigrated to the US in 1899, has been donated to Clare Museum by his grandchildren.   Alan Morrissey was joined by Elizabeth Melican, Denis’s granddaughter, and John Rattigan, curator at Clare Museum, to hear the story behind this special family heirloom and its long journey back to Clare. An International Aviation Business has decided to base its operations in Shannon. Established in August 2024, Infinity Aviation Support has now completed 50 projects across 15 countries. The consultancy firm which offers expert guidance in aircraft design, engineering, certification, risk analysis and training has now opened Headquarters in the Westpark Business Campus. Founder and CEO Anthony Attoumani says moving to Shannon was a no-brainer.

A Cabinet Minister has acknowledged more supports are needed for Clare children with learning disabilities. The Government is rolling out a Literary Associates Pilot Programme where graduates in Dyslexia studies can be immediately deployed to classrooms. It comes as the Dáil has heard that Clare children with learning difficulties are losing confidence and subject to bullying due to a sheer lack of reading and writing supports locally. Junior Minister for Education Michael Moynihan says they're working to put resources in place.

Clarecastle captain Colin Brigdale is hailing the relentless nature of the performance that saw them claim the TUS Premier Intermediate hurling title. The Magpies confirmed their return to Clare hurling's top table with an emphatic victory over Corofin. A trip to Limerick is up next for Ger O'Loughlin's men, where they take on Dromin Athlacca on November 15th. Brigdale says their semi final win over Tubber gave them the confidence to claim the Paddy Browne Cup.

One of the Banner's key men is praising their effort as they completed a memorable hurling and football championship double. The Shanaway Road club capped off a historic campaign by claiming the TUS Intermediate Hurling title with victory over Inagh Kilnamona. After being beaten by Killanena in the opening round of the hurling championship, the club went unbeaten for the rest of the season across both codes. Meehan says they were determined to make the 2026 season a special one for the club.

Eight Clare communities are celebrating success at this year’s SuperValu TidyTowns Competition, with Ballyvaughan, Clarecastle, Ennis, Kilrush, Newmarket-on-Fergus, Quin, Shannon and Tuamgraney all achieving Gold Medals.  There is particular cause for celebration in Quin, which has been named the tidiest area in County Clare, increasing its score from 396 points last year to 411 this year.   Ennis has also reached a significant milestone, claiming its 25th Gold Medal, while Ballyvaughan and Shannon are among the Clare communities recognised for their ongoing work.  Across the country, 936 towns and villages entered this year’s competition. There’s anger in Mountshannon over changes made by Coillte at Woodpark Woodland Walk, with concerns that the work has undermined the efforts of local volunteers who helped develop the popular amenity.   Ireland South Independent MEP Michael McNamara has described the situation as “a slap in the face” to the community, raising questions about consultation, public money and the future of the walk.   Michael joined Alan Morrissey to discuss what happened and what he believes needs to happen next. In a statement, Coillte have said "Coillte is finalising development works at its forest at Woodpark Mountshannon as part of a Department of Rural and Community Development funded capital project aimed at enhancing the recreational offering of the woodland.   "The works, conducted over the last two weeks, included upgrades and improvements to 1.4km of walking trails in the Wood to improve their accessibility and also upgrades to the car parking facilities. The project was delivered in collaboration with the local Mountshannon Community Council. All works were fully assessed in advance to ensure any potential environmental impacts were identified and appropriately considered.   "Coillte has received positive feedback on the improvements delivered within the Wood to date from the local community and are committed to building on this progress through further enhancements in the years ahead in partnership with the Mountshannon Community Council and Clare County Council.   "We look forward to continuing this positive collaboration to ensure Woodpark remains an attractive and accessible amenity for local residents and visitors alike." Concern has emerged Clare could lose a vital community outreach programme. Creative Communities Engagement Officers were established in all 31 local authorities in 2023 as part of a five-year strategy under the Creative Ireland Programme. The Government has made no indication yet if the positions will be renewed, potentially putting jobs and funding for youth and diverse community services and workshops at risk. Clare CCEO Eva Birdthistle says clarity is urgently needed.

Ennis Tidy Towns is hailing the milestone of achieving its 25th Gold Medal. The community group was among the eight Clare towns and villages to be successful in the top tier of the competition. In total, 936 towns and villages entered the 2026 edition. Ennis Tidy Towns Volunteer and Councillor Mary Howard says it's an enormous sense of pride for the group.

Concerns have been raised following a dangerous incident of vandalism in Shannon. Large quantities of broken glass were scattered throughout the town park including near the bandstand, with shards also found hidden in grassy areas. Particular concern was raised due to the close proximity of the park to both primary and secondary schools. Shannonbanks Sinn Féin Councillor James Ryan says it posed serious risk to both children and pets.

A Clare disability rights activist says disabled people are often 'trapped' in low income jobs so they don't lose access to medical cards. A group of working disabled people across Ireland have put forward the proposal to Ministers Jack Chambers and Dara Calleary to expand the cost of disability payment. Ennistymon-based Clare Leader Forum Director, Ann Marie Flanagan says at present people are forced to work low income jobs as they'll lose access to vital services if they move into a higher tax bracket. She says working disabled people can't earn close to enough to cover rising costs paired with the hidden cost of disability.

A Clare Green Party representative is calling on the Government to stop favouring tech companies in order to stem the tide of global warming. It follows a warning from the UN Environment Programme that the chance to maintain global warming at 1.5 degrees celsius above pre industrial levels is now gone. Their latest report says urgent cuts are needed to greenhouse gas emissions, including reductions of 18% by 2030, 45% by 2035 and 69% by 2040. Ennis Green Party Representative, Bridget Ginnity, says it's disappointing that Government has pulled back on climate commitments.

The Taoiseach has given his two cents on the possibility of an East Clare Gaelscoil. It comes as the board of O'Callaghan's Mills National School is looking into converting to education through Irish. It would allow the school to develop an additional class and avail of extra supports and teaching hours. Responding to Meelick Fianna Fáil Deputy Cathal Crowe in the Dáil, Micheál Martin says the move could save a lot of money.

Clare's Superintendent is warning motorists that drink and drug driving checkpoints will be widespread this weekend. Between January and August this year, An Garda Siochána has reported a 9% increase in offences for driving under the influence. There's also been a 17% hike in the number of people driving while using a mobile phone and a 55% rise in speeding detections. Superintendent of the Clare Community Functional Engagement Area Susan O'Brien says a second's distraction can be lethal.

Kilrush RNLI is urging extreme caution if visiting the county's coasts this Bank Holiday weekend. With the effects of Storm Boelo hitting the country over the coming days, those visiting the coast are advised to constantly check weather updates before setting off. People are also encouraged to remain well back from cliff edges and to be aware of the risk of being cut off by incoming tides. South Armagh-bred songsmith Fya Fox is continuing her comeback with a new single inspired by her roots. Her latest release, Hometown, is described as a new chapter for the Armagh artist. The track forms part of Fox’s latest return to music and arrives alongside plans for a new EP. The release highlights the influence of her Armagh upbringing on her songwriting. Fya's highly anticipated debut EP, Bittersweet, is out on October 23rd. A collection of songs written over the past two years that documents a transformative chapter in her life, from becoming a mother to rediscovering herself as both a person and an artist, she explains: “For the longest time I've wanted to create a body of work and for some reason, now seemed to be the perfect moment for it to come together so organically. Looking back at the track list, it feels like I've captured little moments from the past 2 years that felt so emotionally raw. Clare Gardaí are appealing for motorists to be more alert behind the wheel as the evenings get darker and stormy conditions become more prevalent. A Garda roads policing operation came into force yesterday and will remain in place until until Tuesday, October 27th. So far this year, 29 pedestrians have been killed on Irish roads to date in 2026, representing 19% of all fatalities, with nine total fatalities occurring on Clare roads to date this year. Superintendent in the Clare/Tipperary Garda Division, Eddie Golden, has been telling Clare FM's Darragh O'Grady that motorists need to be aware of reduced visibility as the clocks go back.

€22,105 has been raised for an Ennis special school through Clare FM’s annual radio charity auction. All proceeds will go to St Clare’s School, which caters for children aged four to 18 with learning disabilities. The auction has been conducted in partnership with the Ennis Lions Club which is a non-profit voluntary service organisation established in 1976. Boasting 40 members, the organisation frequently engages in providing supports and assistance to elderly, young and disadvantaged people in the greater Ennis area.

Ryanair is to train over 400 aircraft mechanics at Shannon Airport over the next five years. It comes as the airline has been granted planning permission for a four-bay maintenance, overhaul and repair hangar and engineering academy. The company says the €50m development will create 300 highly skilled jobs while the facility will take 80 apprentices a year from 2027 to 2031. Shannon Chamber CEO Helen Downes has been telling Clare FM's Daragh Dolan it will be a gamechanger for the region.

Clare's Opposition TD is warning of an impending winter catastrophe at University Hospital Limerick. It comes amid reports that HSE officials are predicting up to 400 attendances per day at the Emergency Department from November to January. The hospital is expected to breach the 100,000 patient mark at its ED by the end of this year. Shannon Sinn Féin Deputy Donna McGettigan believes there's a high chance of avoidable deaths over the coming months.

A Clare Lotto player has until the end of today to claim a prize worth almost €90,000. The winning ticket, worth €89,430, was purchased at McNamee's Londis, Miltown Malbay, for the Lotto draw on Saturday, 25th July. 23, 24, 25, 42, 43, 46 and the bonus of 37 were the winning numbers, with players urged to check in the glove box of the car, old jackets as well as in suitcases or handbags. National Lottery Spokesperson Darragh O'Dwyer says the clock is ticking for the winner.

Clare Oscar Traynor boss Adrian Walsh says his side showed incredible grit as they got their campaign off to a winning start. A 1-0 win over North Tipp in Frank Healy Park saw Clare claim their first victory in this year's competition. Jorge Inacio Lopes scored the all important goal inside the opening 15 minutes, before Clare had to see out more than an hour with 10 men after Jack Ryan's dismissal. Walsh says the sending off was controversial, but the squad reacted well to the setback.

An Garda Síochána joined Alan Morrissey on Thursday's Morning Focus to advise the community in County Clare on the Halloween Policing Operation, known as Operation Tombola. The Clare Operation Tombola policing operation is delivered with the support of our colleagues from the Fire Service, National Ambulance Service and Clare County Council. The main objectives of Operation Tombola are to address anti-social behaviour, detect the sale, distribution and use of illegal fireworks and support communities in delivering a safe and enjoyable Halloween celebration. Gardai in Clare have been visiting schools to discuss Operation Tombola to remind our young people to enjoy Halloween but to be safe. In addition, Gardai in Clare are conducting additional patrols and will be engaging across communities over the Halloween period. As the evenings are getting darker, we would encourage communities to check on elderly neighbours and relatives as this can be an unsettling time of year. An Garda Síochána would like to take this opportunity to thank our colleagues in the other emergency services for their support and we would ask the public to respect the emergency services such as the Fire Service when they are responding to calls. A Sinn Fein TD is describing the removal of the Triple Lock as 'one of the most major decisions' this generation of TDs will make.  Legislation to scrap the Triple Lock passed a first vote in the Dáil last night and will now go to Committee stage.  If enacted, it means members of the defence forces can be deployed overseas without the joint agreement of the Government, the Dail and the United Nations.  Sinn Fein TD Thomas Gould told the Dail history will look back at this moment. The family of Fernando Emanuel Gonçalves da Costa Carneiro Penetra are remembering their loved one following his tragic death in a road traffic collision in West Clare earlier this month.    Fernando, who was from Portugal, was cycling on the N67 between Kilrush and Kilkee when he was involved in a fatal collision with a van at Baunmore on the 9th of October last.    Alan Morrissey has been speaking with Fernando's sister, Heide Carneiro and brother, João Miguel Gonçalves da Costa Carneiro, who both paid tribute to Fernando, shared their memories of him, and spoke about the impact of their heartbreaking loss. The Dáil has heard calls for Clare's streets to be taken back from drug gangs amid harrowing stories of intimidation inflicted on local families. It comes as the Government has once again heard calls for the establishment of a regional Criminal Assets Bureau. It follows the death of four family members in Waterford last week in an arson attack understood to be connected to drug violence. Clare Fianna Fáil TD Cathal Crowe says there have been plenty of harrowing incidents in this county as well.

On Atlantic Tales this week Pat Flynn takes a tour of the Burren and meet some of those involved in this year’s Burren Winterage Festival. The two-day celebration of Burren farming, food, culture and landscape will feature two traditional Burren Beo Winterage Cattle Walks as well as the Burren Food Fayre.

Clare pet owners are being urged to be vigilant to prevent the risks of pets consuming potentially lethal Halloween treats. Items such as chocolate, candies and jellies containing artificial sweetners , raisins, grapes and even nuts can all cause intestinal blockages, vomiting and diarrhea among dogs and cats. Households are being urged to keep trick or treat goods out of reach of their animals at all times and to immediately call a vet in the event of an emergency. It's a building that has been at the heart of community life in Corofin for more than eight decades.   Halla Phádraig Naomhtha was built in 1945, with local people contributing their labour voluntarily, and it went on to become a school, a dance venue, a home for drama and music, and a meeting place for generations of local people.  Now, local community activist Gerry Kennedy is sharing the story of the hall in a special illustrated talk, featuring archival photographs and video footage, hosted by Cumann Staire is Dúchais Chora Finne.  Gerry's own connection with the building goes right back to his primary schooldays, and he has played an important role in its more recent redevelopment.  Alan Morrissey was joined by Gerry to look back at the history of this remarkable community landmark and tell us what people can expect from tomorrow night's event. This weekend, the ancient traditions of Ireland come alive in the heart of the Burren as the Samhain Púca Storytelling Festival returns to the Michael Cusack Heritage Centre in Carron.  Running from Friday, October 23rd, to Sunday, October 25th, the festival celebrates the origins of Samhain through Irish folklore, storytelling, music, dance, language and family activities.   At its heart is the chance to meet the Púca, the mysterious creature of Irish mythology immortalised in a sculpture by artist Aidan Harte.  But this is about much more than Halloween. Motorists are facing another increase in insurance costs, with the Central Bank reporting an average rise of 4% in motor premiums.     But new research has highlighted a particularly striking issue: in some litigated motor injury claims, legal costs are now higher than the compensation paid to the injured person.    Despite reforms designed to reduce personal injury awards and encourage settlements outside court, legal costs for litigated claims have risen significantly. The Burren and Cliffs Explorer shuttle service looks set to be renewed for 2027 following a successful two-year trial period.    The free service connecting the Burren, Ballyvaughan, Corofin, Carran, Cliffs of Moher, Doolin, Liscannor, Lisdoonvarna, Lahinch, Kilfenora and Miltown Malbay carried over 46,000 passengers in 2025, before Ennistymon and Spanish Point were added to the route this year.    It's understood roughly 65,000 passengers used the hop-on hop-off service between this May and September.    Clare FM's Daragh Dolan was at yesterday's Tourism SPC meeting and began by speaking to Clare County Council Tourism Director Siobhán McNulty. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, but there is one aspect of the disease that can sometimes receive less attention — what it means to live with advanced breast cancer.    Barbara King, from Corofin in North Clare, was diagnosed in 2020 during the Covid-19 pandemic. Six years on, she continues to live alongside cancer and is speaking out about the importance of patient voices, clear communication and support.    Barbara was one of eight women featured in Living Loudly. Dying to be Heard, a photographic exhibition held earlier this month in Dublin, supported by the Marie Keating Foundation and AstraZeneca.    Joining Barbara was Liz Yeates, CEO of the Marie Keating Foundation, to discuss the support available to people living with advanced cancer and why continued funding for these services is so important. A ROAD SAFETY Authority (RSA) tender to install 20 breathalyser terminals across hotels and pubs has been scrapped just one day after news broke that it had been issued.    Seán Canney, minister of state with responsibility for Road Safety, has welcomed the decision to stop the breathalyser procurement process.    The initiative, which was set to cost approximately €1.5 million, aimed to challenge the perception of when it is safe to drive after drinking alcohol.    The RSA defended its plan after transport spokesperson for the Social Democrats, Aidan Farrelly TD, blasted it as “disgraceful” and “neglectful”.    The plan came after a pilot programme found that a high proportion of motorists mistakenly believed that they were under the legal limit before getting behind the wheel.    The research showed that 45% of people in over 24,000 tests conducted thought they were under the legal limit when their actual breath test results found they exceeded the limit.    Alan Morrissey was joined by Sean Lally, Chair of the Clare Tourism Advisory Forum and hotelier at Hotel Woodstock in Ennis, and Maurice Walsh, Manager of Moroney's Pub in Ennis and Vice Chair of the Forum. A prominent campaign group has raised concerns that a new Emergency Department for the MidWest may no longer be in the offing. Recent updates from the Department of Health on progress on the Raheen campus fail to mention the provision of acute beds, but do refer to relocation of diagnostic and outpatient services. When the plans were first unveiled in May, Health Minister Jennifer Carroll MacNeill described the €14m and 44 acre site as "HIQA's Option B and C Plus", indicating it would be equipped with an emergency department. Friends of Ennis Hospital Chair Angela Coll says she believes the project's gone sideways.

It's claimed a proposed ban on Clare County Council purchasing homes from the private market would be a serious hindrance to the delivery of social housing in the county. Housing Minister James Browne is to table a proposal that would phase out local authority funding for the purchase of homes from private developers by the end of next year. The move aims to involve local authorities more closely in the design of new homes, in a bid to better address social housing need while maintaining supply on the private market. Chair of Clare County Council’s Social Development SPC, Sixmilebridge Councillor John Crowe, has been telling Clare FM's Darragh O'Grady that the proposal could create serious challenges for the local authority in meeting its social housing targets.

Ennis Soroptimists are joining a European campaign to shine a light on human trafficking, an issue that often remains hidden in plain sight.   The awareness campaign by Soroptimist International Republic of Ireland has reached more than 400,000 people, and representatives recently brought their message to the European Parliament ahead of EU Anti-Trafficking Day last Sunday.  This comes as the charity Ruhama is reporting a significant rise in the number of women trafficked into Ireland - who are seeking its support.   Joining Alan Morrissey was Mary Flanagan, Secretary of Ennis & District Club Soroptimists International, who took part in the European visit. Rob Cleary, from Miltown Malbay, is a facilities engineer by day and a dedicated volunteer with Clare Civil Defence, a volunteer-based organisation that supports frontline emergency services in County Clare. The Civil Defence assists in times of severe weather, flooding, major accidents and in searches for missing persons while also offering community support at local events. Rob’s volunteering journey began during his university years, when he served as a Unit Officer and EMT with the Clare Red Cross. In 2018, he joined Clare Civil Defence, qualifying as Swift Water & Search Responder and a Drone Pilot. He values the camaraderie, the chance to develop new skills, the positive atmosphere and the lasting friendships he has built through volunteering. In 2024, Rob was honoured with the John Cuddihy Volunteer of the Year Award, created in memory of a long-serving Clare Civil Defence volunteer whose loyalty, dedication and selflessness set the highest standard. Award-winning author and chef Trevis Gleason joined Alan Morrissey to talk about the launch of the second edition of Burren Dinners, recently launched in Dingle.   Written in collaboration with the Burren Ecotourism Network, the book celebrates the region’s outstanding food culture, showcasing the farmers, growers, producers, bakers, butchers and chefs who have helped put the Burren firmly on the foodie map.
