If we don't tell our stories, who will?
What began as a space to amplify Latino voices has grown into a home for first-generation voices, immigrant communities, and diasporas across the Global Majority. These conversations transcend borders while reminding us just how deeply interconnected we are.
Hosted by Odalys Jasmine, Hella Latin@ explores identity, migration, creativity, faith, liberation, and what it means to belong in a world that often asks us to choose just one part of ourselves.
Each episode uncovers the histories, traditions, and lived experiences that shape who we are and who we're becoming. Because the more deeply we understand one another's stories, the more fully we understand our own.
While our histories may differ, our humanity connects us all.
- 166 - A Little Delusion & A Little Self-Doubt | Ian Lara on Going From Pre-Law to an HBO Comedy Special
Comedian Ian Lara joins me for a conversation about identity, creativity, first-gen expectations and learning to become more yourself.
Born to Dominican parents and raised in Queens, Ian reflects on growing up Afro-Latino, navigating the complexity of identity, and the experience of leaving New York and realizing how often people outside of his community misunderstood who he was.
In this episode, he talks about studying political science and economics with plans for law school to pursuing stand-up comedy after discovering a passion for the craft. What followed were years of open mics, writing, performing and slowly building a career that eventually led to Comedy Central, The Tonight Show and his HBO special Romantic Comedy.
We get into the reality of making a living as a creative, the importance of repetition and practice, and why Ian believes pursuing a creative career requires a balance of delusion and self-doubt.
Tune in to hear about all things comedy, dating, Dominican culture, colorism, representation, and the process of figuring out what parts of ourselves we want to carry forward and the parts we're ready to redefine.

Tue, 11 Aug 2026 - 1h 14min - 165 - A Kid From Florida, a Son of Egypt: Bucki Sugar on Music, Identity & Faith
Some artists write about who they are, others write about who they’ll become. Bucki Sugar documents the experience at both ends and the one in between.
In this Hella Latin@ episode, Odalys Jasmine sits down with Los Angeles rapper, producer, and songwriter Bucki Sugar for one of the most thoughtful conversations on creativity, identity, faith, and transformation.
Born to Egyptian parents and raised between Florida and Egypt, Bucki reflects on what it means to grow up between cultures, navigate questions of identity, and carry the dreams of immigrant parents while finding your own voice.
Together, they explore how music became more than self-expression, it became a practice of healing.
Bucki opens up about writing through grief, learning to create from a place of hope instead of self-destruction, and why his music captures not only who he is today, but every version of himself along the way.
We also dive into spirituality, patience, vulnerability, and the creative process. If you've ever wondered how artists turn life into art or how people become who they're meant to be — this conversation is for you.
About Bucki Sugar:
The Los Angeles based rapper / producer / songwriter approaches hip-hop as a process of transformation, using vivid imagery, layered lyricism, and soulful, atmospheric production to explore the moments that reshape a person. His music moves through grief, faith, memory, identity, and self-discovery. Not only as fixed ideas but as evolving states of being.
Bucki Sugar embraces life’s uncertainty and it comes through in his artistry. His songs reward repeat listens, revealing new connections between personal reflection and universal experience, while remaining emotionally direct at their core. The result is music that feels lived-in — intimate enough to resemble journal entries, yet expansive enough for listeners to find their own stories within them.

Together, we explore how their personal journeys from navigating diaspora identity and systemic oppression to embracing spirituality and community, have shaped their understanding of freedom.

And what kind of world are we actually trying to build after the systems we're fighting to abolish are gone? From Puerto Rican identity and post-9/11 experiences to mindfulness, social media, faith, conflict resolution, and the contradictions of this modern life, this episode is an invitation to slow down, get curious, and imagine a better world for the collective. It also challenges us to think beyond systems of oppression and ask: What are we building instead?

Joel Leon is a Bronx-born writer, performer, storyteller, father, and creative facilitator whose work explores healing, identity, vulnerability, and collective liberation. Darlene Lopez helps artists sell out without selling out. As a first-generation Peruvian-American, Darlene’s career goal has been to thrive at the intersection of culture and technology. So what does that look like in this digital age? Latin music.
With close to 10 years working in entertainment, Darlene has championed the latest wave of Latin music at tech titans Apple and TikTok. She led the Latin music business for TikTok, successfully advocating for the globalization of Mexican Music with artists like Fuerza Regida, Eslabon Armado, and Peso Pluma.

Thu, 05 Jun 2025 - 58min - 149 - Leaving Burnout Behind: Take The Medical Leave or... Leave
Melany del Carpio is a first-generation, first-born Peruvian-American who is deeply committed to empowering women of color to thrive and be unapologetically themselves in the face of societal and capitalist pressures.
With eight years of experience in higher education, she made a pivotal career transition into the tech industry in 2022. Throughout her career journey, Melany has faced significant challenges, including reaching a breaking point that required her to take medical leave and reclaim her power from a toxic work environment. This transformative experience has become the foundation of her passion: supporting others in achieving success while maintaining their well-being, free from the weight of overwork and unrealistic expectations.
Melany is dedicated to helping others set boundaries, reclaim their rest, and define success on their own terms, empowering them to become who they are meant to be without compromise.
In this week’s episode, Melany shares exactly why rest is resistance. We all have these overwhelming expectations put on us, and it feels like the end of the world if we don’t meet them. Our families immigrated here for a better life, and we don’t want to even think of the possibility of letting them down. But Melany’s story reminds us that while their journey was a brave one, it is brave for us to live our own lives on our own terms, too. And if that means letting go of their dreams for us and getting the rest our body needs, so be it.

She's here to tell that story, highlight the growing presence of Latino Muslims in the U.S. and share the significance of preserving language and traditions amidst changing cultural landscapes.

Mon, 09 Sep 2024 - 1h 08min - 129 - The Grief and The Gratitude with Christine Olivia
Christine knew from a young age, that she wanted to use her skills to empower others. After recognizing her connection and passion for ceremonial cacao, yoga, and wellness, she realized that she was a magical being on the path to remembering.
Her book A Child of Magic, as well as the adapted screenplay Lana Livia and The Ancestral Magic, are both based on her own journey of remembrance, serving as a reminder to reconnect with the innate magic within and around us.
After her father took his life, she felt she had lost a part of herself that she’d never be able to connect with again. That is until she discovered Mayan cacao from Guatemala. While there, she reunited with her heart, her ancestry, and her ancestral plant medicine. She felt a clear connection and a deep knowing that she was meant to work with cacao ceremonially, not only for her own healing but for the healing of the world. Ever since this discovery, she’s been sharing cacao in the ceremony through The Maltyox (Gratitude) Method and her stories with communities worldwide.
After facilitating healing and transformation within many communities, including Poosh Wellness, Alo Yoga, and countless masterminds, she’s taken what she’s learned to write her next book — a guide for readers to experience full self-liberation through harnessing the power of gratitude.
Her wish is to cultivate love and enrich others' lives by sharing her gifts, her truth expression, and her magical creations. To embody gratitude, the love, light, & magic and inspire others to do the same. She hopes with all of my creations she can inspire others to live in their truth and tap into their magic.
In this week’s episode, Christine shares her recent spiritual experiences, including her journey to her ancestral lands. In Guatemala, she was able to reconnect with her roots and suppressed feelings. Mon, 27 Nov 2023 - 1h 09min - 109 - First Gen Corporate with Luis Báez
Luis Báez is an entrepreneur, sales executive, and unwavering optimist who's a little obsessed about helping you build a career and business you’re proud of. His pronouns are he, him, and él. His ability to build genuine trust and help people around him shine is why he's been recruited to work at some of the most influential companies in history — including LinkedIn, Google, Uber, and Tesla.
Not bad for a First-Gen Nuyorican boy from the Bronx! No one taught him how to sell — putting himself out there is just what he's had to do to create the life he wanted. After closing over half a billion dollars in sales at Fortune 500 companies, she still had trouble putting himself out there confidently as an entrepreneur when he got started.
Launching his own business was a totally new ball game, but by combining all the strategic thinking he learned working in Silicon Valley with his NYC hustle, he was finally able to figure out his formula for stacking sales. This system has helped him make some serious impact on the lives of the people he serves — and his own.
In this week’s episode, Luis shares his experience as a gay Latino working in the hypercritical environment of corporate sales. Luis is very aware of the societal expectations placed on him - how machismo defines what kind of man he should be, and how he used to navigate code-switching to fit in. He worked tirelessly and in return, he only received a wobbly chair at the table. He soon realized he was not just keeping pace, but outperforming his peers. That’s when he decided to grow beyond his current employer, build his personal brand, and launch his own company.

Wed, 08 Nov 2023 - 1h 01min - 107 - ¿De Dónde Eres? with Dominique Cordero
Dominique Cordero 🇵🇷 is a Spanish Coach, salsa dancer, and world traveler. When she was twenty-three years old, she was working a soul-crushing “Corporate-America” job when she asked herself, “Is this it?” She felt lost, uninspired, and more than ready for a radical change. So that’s exactly what she did. In three months, she sold my car, broke her lease, packed her life into two suitcases, and boarded a plane to Barcelona, Spain. With that one-way ticket, she was off to live with a host family, work as an Au Pair, and pursue a long-time dream of living in a Spanish-speaking country. From there she was able to immerse herself in Spanish culture, learn how to speak the language fluently, and come home to show off her new skills to all her Spanish-speaking family members.
Her love of Spanish continues to gift her with cherished moments and treasured relationships. And that's why, a decade later, Dominique has devoted her time to helping adults—like you—unlock the habits and methods they need to confidently carry on a conversation in Spanish too. She wants her clients to experience the joy of actually living in Spanish, something that goes far beyond the superficial level of communication.
In this week’s episode, Dominique shares how she transitioned into teaching Spanish full-time during the 2020 pandemic and doing it all online. As a proud Puerto Rican, Dominique shares her thoughts on the importance of preserving and celebrating the cultural legacy and communicating with our elders, including her grandfather who settled in the midwest and didn't have anyone to speak Spanish with for a long time.
Listen to hear more about how learning a language changed the course of Dominique’s life for the better!

Tue, 13 Jun 2023 - 57min - 95 - Being Latino Wasn't Cool with Antonio Rodriguez
The Latino community has seen a recent trend in folks loving on our culture and some even going a bit too far with appropriating it. In the words of Bad Bunny (or 'Ben' depending how you feel about him right now), todos quieren ser Latino pero les falta sazon which translates to "everyone wants to be Latino but they're missing the flavor."
On a positive note, we also see an increase in our people stepping into their culture proudly — something that wasn't always common for our U.S. Latinos.
Through one of my favorite partnerships with the Intuit Latinos Network, I met someone who shared their own story and struggle with identity. Meet Antonio Rodriguez, who joined Hella Latin@ to talk about how it wasn't always "cool" to be Latino. Growing up in Texas in the 70s, Antonio said being Latino wasn't celebrated, it wasn't a trend in media/entertainment and it wasn't something he took pride in. Instead, he was taught to speak English and to act American as possible.
"I could hide Spanish but I couldn't hide my brown skin."
Tune in to hear from Antonio, a 2nd generation Mexican-American on his dad’s side and 4th generation Tejano on his Mom's side, as he shares his story of owning and embracing his Latinidad.

Tue, 16 May 2023 - 48min - 93 - Live Through Love with Ruben Rojas
Ruben Rojas is a Colombian-American artist, fashion designer, podcaster, and activist. In 2013, he traded in his suit for a paint brush and began transforming blank walls into unique empowering messages that today are uplifting communities and challenging the public to create new dialogues. For Ruben, love isn’t a word but rather a way of life and a way to change the world. Through his ‘love’ artwork, Ruben encourages people to live through love actively, to participate in a ripple effect of positivity, and to love themselves and care for each other. Ruben’s ‘Life Through Love’ message started with his murals.
In our current climate of chaos, division, and uncertainty, his artwork is a supercritical reminder that love is a powerful verb; choosing to live through love can transcend labels, bring people together, and break down stigmas. From France to Florida to California, Ruben Rojas’ vibrant murals not only inspire viewers to dream hard, live in joy, and love big but they also beautify gray urban spaces. View his Most Popular LA Street Art & Sculptures.
Ruben’s work is also found in surprising places. Putting his philosophy of love to the test, he worked with inmates at Lancaster state prison in 2018 to create a Ruben Rojas-style mural with the message “Forgive/Forgiven.”
In 2018, Ruben was painting his “Love Yourself” mural in Sherman Oaks and realized his hand-written ‘love’ would have just as much impact printed on a t-shirt. After posting the mural and accompanying ‘love’ t-shirt, he ended up selling 100 shirts, sparking a pivot to start a mission-driven clothing brand and have been worn recently by talent including Paris Hilton,Snoop Dogg, Cedric the Entertainer, members of NFL’s LA Rams, and more.
In this episode, you'll hear about Ruben's journey in stepping out of his suit, and completely into his art that's deeply rooted in love. His story is just another reminder that taking the "non-traditional" career route can bring success and happiness, too.
