  • 1874 - Pete Gillespie and Jos Ruffell - Garage Project

This week we catch up with Pete Gillespie and Jos Ruffell from Garage Project. Garage Project is a fascinating brewery, one that has always been at the forefront of industry innovation and experimentation, while also being one of the more professional and quality-driven operations. This year the brewery celebrated 10 years in business taking out the recent Champion Large Brewery trophy at last week’s Brewers Guild of New Zealand’s New Zealand Beer Awards. In this extensive and thoughtful chat, we look at how the industry has evolved over the last 10 years, their strategy - or lack of it - for the brewery, the evolution of beer styles and innovation in the category and where that will lead, and also whether after 10 years in the business the pair have started to turn their minds to having an exit strategy or plan the future for the business. Our partners Radio Brews News is proudly presented by Cryer Malt, who we are thrilled to announce are back supporting us for another year of conversations. • 1873 - Radio Brews News tackles Kosciuszko with Chuck

Chuck Hahn is back – and Matt Kirkegaard has the same question he’s been asking since January. Kosciuszko Pale Ale is one of the best-known ‘regional’ craft brands in the country. It’s also brewed entirely at Malt Shovel in Sydney, with Lion’s name nowhere on the label. Hahn defends the brand’s authenticity, acknowledges the labelling is changing, but won’t concede the current wording misleads anyone. Pete Mitcham calls it – big brewers want the credibility of place without the inconvenience of transparency. Also: a peated Scotch ale worth tracking down, the reformulated Hahn Premium Pilsner, and why your barman is probably serving your dark ale too cold.

  • 1872 - Bradford Tetlow

This week's conversation is with brewer Bradford Tetlow. Bradford has had an interesting brewing career after - like many people - discovering great beer while traveling overseas. He has worked as a brewery technician at Federation Uni, had a diverse career at Lion as a Lab technician and sensory trainer, QA Leader and brewer at Little Creatures. After a sabbatical travelling and sampling his way around Europe, he has spent a little over two years working at Camden Town in the UK and now as operational quality manager at Carlsberg. While we talk about his career and travels, one of the most interesting aspects for me is that we discuss the nature of beer sensory, something that is Bradford’s career focus but that became particularly relevant to Bradford when he caught Covid and lost his sense of smell and taste, which he is only just getting back after almost a year. Enjoy the conversation. Our partners Radio Brews News is proudly presented by Cryer Malt, who we are thrilled to announce are back supporting us for another year of conversations.
