- 298 - Nobody Cares About Your Protagonist
This episode is a rough cut from one of Tim Grahl and Shawn Coyne’s regular Zoom calls. Tim is frustrated that students lose track of their object of desire mid-scene or set stakes so low that nothing matters. Shawn’s answer: stop thinking about the protagonist. The writer is the antagonist, and the antagonist’s want drives the crisis. From there they build the whole values map underneath the six core genres, from life and death through certainty and doubt, and what’s at stake at each level: survival, sanity, reputation, devotion, trust, and faith. Fair warning, there’s more language than usual.
Fri, 30 Oct 2026 - 47min - 297 - Art, Automation, and AI - Part 4
In the final part of Art, Automation, and AI, Tim Grahl and Shawn Coyne bring the series home. Tim starts with his own confession that when ChatGPT arrived, he worried a machine would write a book before he did. Shawn explains why asking a large language model for feedback on your writing keeps you in a wicked learning environment: it’s an inference machine built to satisfy you, not a deterministic one built to tell you the truth. From there they walk through the Story Grid Dojo, where writers start with three sentences, work through the five commandments across the three levels of reality, and get consistent, standardized feedback within 24 hours. Shawn describes the daily practice he wishes he’d had at 25 and why every student who shows up is the one.
Fri, 23 Oct 2026 - 57min - 296 - Art, Automation, and AI — Part 3
In Part 3 of Art, Automation, and AI, Tim Grahl and Shawn Coyne ask what it means that language can be turned into math. Shawn compares a developmental editor to a CPA who reads only the evidence and always tells the truth, and explains the difference between an LLM’s probability inferences and a deterministic calculation. Tim lays out why writing is one of the most wicked learning environments there is, and why knowledge never turns into skill without fast, accurate feedback. Shawn then describes the software he built: a calculator, not an AI, that grades a writer’s sentences against 35 years of editorial judgment and returns feedback within 24 hours.
Fri, 16 Oct 2026 - 53min - 295 - Art, Automation, and AI — Part 2
Can you do math on a sentence? Picking up from last week, Shawn Coyne argues that an LLM produces mimicked artifacts, not original ones, and that confusing the two is where the "ghost in the machine" fear comes from. Then he goes somewhere most writers won't like: writing can be evaluated objectively, all the way down to the sentence. Drawing on Gödel, Church, Turing, Deutsch, and Shannon, he explains why a finished piece of writing is a fully computable artifact, walks Tim Grahl through the exact process he uses to give feedback on a scene, and lays out what he's actually been working toward for 35 years: formalizing what he knows well enough that a machine can analyze a writer's work the way he would, and get them feedback in seconds instead of weeks.
Fri, 9 Oct 2026 - 1h 04min - 294 - Art, Automation, and AI — Part 1
Is AI the devil, the savior, or something nobody has defined yet? Shawn Coyne spent three years writing Mentoring the Machines with cognitive scientist John Vervaeke to answer that question, and in this episode he walks Tim Grahl through what he found. He lays out a framework for understanding every technology from the shovel to ChatGPT, explains why the real distinction isn't fast versus slow but computational versus conscious, and makes the case that what large language models fundamentally lack is myth. Along the way, he explains what the word myth actually means, why it is not a synonym for lie, and why both the "AI will destroy us" and "AI will save us" stories should make you suspicious.
Fri, 2 Oct 2026 - 49min - 293 - How do you write a book you're proud to publish?
Tim Grahl surveyed 506 unpublished writers and found they'd been working on their craft for an average of 14.9 years. In any other creative field that would be a sign something is broken. In this episode, Shawn Coyne explains why studying plot, structure, and character development doesn't get most writers there, and what does: learning to write a single sentence that conforms to the mythic pattern of everyday experience. He and Tim get into why Story Grid starts students at the sentence level, why feedback matters more than theory, why a flow state can fool you into thinking bad writing is good, and the difference between journaling and actually writing for a reader.

Thu, 23 Jun 2022 - 1h 12min - 264 - Story Tropes: Building Blocks of Scenes
What are Tropes and how can they actually help your writing? Tropes are a toolbox of common components to build a certain kind of story. You can put these building blocks together to create a story that meets the reader expectations for your particular GENRE. Most lists of tropes are a grab bag of story types and/or their components and aspects. They don’t fit together, so they don’t provide a process for consistently crafting scenes and stories that satisfy readers. In the Story Grid Universe, we provide this process by limiting the definition of a trope to a particular level of Story. Story Grid tropes are small story units that are the building blocks writers need to create the arc of change within scenes. In this episode, we start working through the Tropes for the short story EYE WITNESS by Ed McBain (https://amzn.to/3Q2UpqV).
