Talking Bach is a brand new podcast series hosted by Madeleine Easton, the Artistic Director of Australia’s dedicated J.S. Bach ensemble, Bach Akademie Australia. Based around our concert series throughout the year, this podcast delves into the world of one of the greatest composers who ever lived, Johann Sebastian Bach, interviewing internationally famous performers of his work, scholars, scientists, cosmologists, academics and personalities from all walks of life who all have a connection to the man who arguably founded western classical music as we know it.

She explores the meaning of the word itself, and takes a deep dive into the program which includes Bach’s Cantata BWV 39 ‘Brich dem Hungrigen dein Brot’, dubbed Bach’s ‘refugee’ cantata, his harpsichord concerto in E which has been arranged for violin by Kati Debrezeni, and finally his Cantata BWV 147 ‘Herz und Mund, und Tat und Leben’. Madeleine takes us through the history of these works plus explores just why Bach was the greatest musical benefactor of all to us, his grateful listeners.

They have invited Bach Akademie Australia to kick off this exciting week of Bach in this year’s Sydney Festival with 2 performances on the 23rd and 24th of January.

My guest today is a name many who revere Bach will know, none other than Professor Peter Wollny. Professor Wollny is a German musicologist, a Bach scholar who has contributed to and served the Bach Archive Leipzig since 1993, and as its director from 2014. Wollny has contributed to the Neue Bach-Ausgabe, and has been an editor of Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach: The Complete Works. He has been professor at the University of Leipzig, and teaches internationally. He received an honorary doctorate from the University of Uppsala and is considered one of the foremost experts of J.S Bach’s music worldwide.

Brendan New is a Clinical Psychologist who has worked in the field of child protection and mental health for over 15 years and has a deep commitment to working with vulnerable children and families. Brendan currently divides his time between his clinical practice in a public child mental health service in Western Sydney and varying teaching roles around NSW. He is a firm believer in the importance of reflective practice and the benefits of learning from others, and wherever possible incorporates these principles into his teaching. In this episode, Brendan helps us explore the question of Nature vs nurture from a medical point of view, exploring the ramifications of childhood trauma, which J.S Bach certainly suffered, and how that can manifest in genius or not.

During his time in London, Russell furthered his studies Australia’s own Yvonne Kenny, was an Associate of the Young Artists’ Program at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, and was made an Alumnus of the Britten–Pears Young Artist Program. Since returning to Australia, Russell has appeared as soloist with ensembles such as Pinchgut Opera, opera Australia and Bach Akademie Australia.
